Harvest Thanksgiving We have had two celebrations for Harvest this year; firstly, the enjoyment of the fruits of Harvest with a village supper and, secondly, a service in Church at which donations were made for those less fortunate than ourselves.
It was lovely to have so many people from the Community come to the Village Hall for food and fellowship. Our thanks go to the cooks and organisers. This year the youngsters really entered into the spirit of the occasion and made such items as ratatouille, cheesecake and muffins! The traditional raffle raised ÂŁ96. At the evening service we gathered together again to praise God for his goodness and to think of those who produce food (and use their other skills and gifts) and those who do not have enough. A cash donation of ÂŁ120.10 will go to Plas Bellin for Save the Family. Some of this cash was raised in lieu of Christmas card giving last year. A good collection of tins and other food was given for Mold

Church News Food Bank, together with a collection from Ysgol Bro Famau who had its own Harvest Service. Walkers from Bistre Walkers from Bistre were welcomed into our Church recently to look around and were given tea and biscuits, following a request made by them to Rev'd Phil Bettinson. They appreciated the welcome and the potted history of the church. There is always someone available to open up the church at weekends or on a weekday if an individual or group would like to view the church, or just use it for prayer. Please contact Church Wardens. Remembrance Sunday Particularly poignant this year as the Sunday is actually 11th November. The service in Church will begin at the unusual time of 10.15 am and will finish in time for people to leave the church at 10.50 am to assemble for 11.00 at the Memorial Stone. A warm invitation to the service is extended to all and particularly to Llanferres Community Council. The Kohima Epitaph will be recited at the Memorial Stone. Craft Fair The church will have a stall at the Craft Fair being organised in the Village Hall on Saturday 10th November from 1 pm to 4 pm. Donations of Christmas food (cake, mincemeat, chutney), Christmas crafts or gifts or anything related to Christmas that we may sell on the stall to raise funds for the Church would be very much appreciated. Retirement of the Reverend Jean Stephens The Rev'd Jean Stephens is to retire at the end of this year after over 23 years' service as an ordained minister in the Church. She has served as non-stipendiary Curate in the parishes of Gwernaffield and Llanferres and, since the formation of the Bro Famau Group in 2009, in the other parishes too. There will be a special celebration Eucharist at Holy Trinity, Gwernaffield on the feast of the Epiphany, Sunday 6th January, followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. More details later. Community Council News - October Meeting From the minutes of the October meeting:- eight Councillors were present, Councillor Yvonne Foden-McCorry sent her apologies. There were no declarations of interest. County Councillor Martyn Holland's report:- Councillor Holland reported that the new refuse bins should be delivered soon to replace the present sack system except to places where the refuse lorries cannot get. If a resident cannot handle the bins, through infirmity for example, they would be supplied with sacks after a trial period. The 'food waste' receptacle will be collected weekly and the bins will be collected fortnightly. The County Council have ambitious recycling plans for which funds are available but the budget has not yet been agreed. He commented on a report in the press listing the number of meetings individual County Councillors had been expected to attend and the number actually attended. The report was not strictly accurate as it did not list other meetings attended. Councillor Holland has a 100% attendance record but he also attended area meetings, AONB meetings, training meetings and other committee meetings. The County is taking action on dog fouling by employing a private firm with powers to impose 'on the spot fines' and, if any resident reports an offence, action will be taken to send an employee round to try to contact the offender. Archaeologists from the British Museum are conducting a dig in the cave in Llanarmon and probably another cave in the district. The minutes of the September meeting were signed as a true record. Matters arising:- The matter of the summer buses, up Moel Famau, being under used had been raised and the sheep wandering onto the road seemed to have been resolved. At a meeting of 'One Voice Wales' Councillor Margaret Davies had been elected to serve on the AONB committee.
The adoption of Cae Derwen is still ongoing but an officer from Highways & Infrastructure, had been in contact with Morris Holmes, who informed her that the matter is in hand and will be dealt with as soon as the relevant documentation is at hand regarding the drains and the layout of the houses. Bus Stop in Maeshafn:- Councillor Holland had completed a survey and, although there had not been a great response, the majority of those responding favoured the bus stop remaining at the Village Green. NO yellow lines are proposed in the village but car parking remains a problem. Councillors had conducted a 'Risk Assessment' of Community Council assets and found them all safe but there were some minor faults. The Wych elm tree on the Heulog, which is dying, does not seem to be a danger but will be monitored. Arrangement will be made for maintenance of the grass on Maeshafn Village Green.
The Consultation Document with reference to Betsi Cadwalader University Health Trust was considered in detail and a response will be forwarded. The Community Councillors had read the adoption of the Equality Policy and voted to support it. Planning Matters:21/2012/1241 Proposal: Removal of timber shed and erection of a stone outbuilding. Location: The Coach House Llanferres (TafarnyGelyn). It was resolved to raise no objection. Certificates of Decision:- 21/2012/1093 Proposal: Retention of 16 no groundmounted solar photovoltaic panels (retrospective.) Location: Cae Cymro, Maeshafn Road, Gwernymynydd. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Steamed Treacle & Ginger Pudding This is the time of year when I seem to crave carbohydrates, perhaps to provide some extra insulation for winter. I do believe that if you are going to do those extra calories then they have to be really worth while. This recipe truly hits the spot. It is a classic sponge recipe that is steamed to give a light and delicious pudding. The real custard makes a big difference and is surprisingly easy to make. 2 eggs The weight of the eggs in Butter Castor sugar Self-raising flour 2 pieces stem ginger chopped finely 2 table spoons golden syrup Cream butter and sugar by beating well Add eggs and mix until smooth Mix in chopped ginger Sieve flour into mix and fold in lightly Grease 2lb pudding basin and place a disk of greaseproof paper or silicon in bottom Add syrup to bottom of basin Add mixture Cover bowl with 2 layers of tin foil. Place in a saucepan with a well-fitting lid. Add about 4cm of boiling water and simmer very slowly for 2 hours, checking the water level from time to time. Real Custard 580ml milk ½ vanilla pod or ½ tsp vanilla extract 4 eggs yolks only 30g castor sugar 2 level tsp cornflour Bting the milk and vanilla to simmering point slowly over a low heat. Whisk the yolks, sugar and cornflour together in a bowl until well blended. Pour the hot milk on to the eggs and sugar and whisk continuously. Return to the pan and over a low heat stir gently until thickened.

Llanferrres Over 60s Club
The Lunch Club next meets on 7 November at the St Kilda Hotel Llandudno. A coach has been arranged which will collect members from the Village Centre in Gwernymynydd. The cost (including lunch and coach) is ÂŁ6.50.
On October we had a trip to the Albert Dock. After some lunch we had a walk round all the souvenir shops, the Tate gallery and the various museums. It was all very interesting and I think we all enjoyed our day out, although some of us got a bit wet awaiting the coach. Many thanks to Betty for all her hard work organising it.

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday October 8th had Dr Goronwy Wynne as our guest speaker. This was Dr Wynne's 7th visit to give a talk to our club. His topic was "Flowers of the Mountains". In a preamble he explained that mountains had four levels 1) Valleys 2)Wooded slopes 3) Tundra and 4) Permanent snow and ice. Plants varied according to weather conditions and soil at these levels. Dr Wynne then showed his selection of slides of plants in several countries' mountains in different terrain and at different seasons. Once again Dr Wynne displayed his love of wildflowers. Our next meeting will be the Annual General Meeting on Monday November 12th at 7路30pm after which there will be a buffet for which members agreed to supply various food items. As usual there will be no meeting in December but our Annual Lunch will be held on Sunday January 13th at Plas Hafod - 12路30pm for 1路0pm lunch.

Team Llanferres - Go-kart Champions of 2012 The up and coming local team managed to complete 20 laps in record time with Moira Bonar taking the lead from the start. After a breakdown on the track and change of kart, Sue Clarke made a good comeback to give Moira a fight for lead position. Badminton Club news The new season has started, with plenty to talk about in both the junior and senior clubs. In both sessions we are pleased to welcome the new comers and hope that the joining of the two session is more inclusive for all members. This season has also seen the introduction of the ‘C’ Team, which will provide more opportunities for members to play within the senior North East Wales Badminton League. On Friday 12th October, they played their first match (in the village hall) with a great result and a good atmosphere, if a little shaky at the start. Amazing that so many games went to three but still finished by 10.15! I think everyone enjoyed the evening and it was good to see the club making a return to the village. Match of the night goes to Mark Pimblett and Erin Bailey for their convincing win. The ‘B’ Team have had a much busier start, with two games already under their belt. They got off to a flying start with a 7-1 win over Mold C, followed by a close game against Holywell, where 5 games went to three matches, but narrowly losing 5-3. Special mention to Alabama Berry who won her ladies doubles (with mum Mel) on her debut with the ‘B’ Team The ‘A’ team struggled in their first match of the season, against newly promoted Ruthin losing 7-1, with only Peter Williams and Duncan Church winning their match to save a whitewash. November sees all teams with many more fixtures and the first Junior League tournament will be well underway (good luck to everyone playing!!)

LLANFERRES/COLOMENDY ART GROUP would like to thank all who, yet again, supported our exhibition. Over 300 people voted for their favourite picture with Pat Armstrong's calligraphy 'Owl' gaining most votes, closely followed by Betty Cook's 'Donkey 'and Olive Parry's 'Low Tide'. The winning Raffle tickets were; 907,710,803,753,749 and 946. The Teddy's name is Goronwy . Prior to this year's exhibition the group have donated over £1250 to various charities. (In)Famous 20 go to the Lleyn A motley crew of assorted villagers, guest and dogs set of for the Llyn Peninsula at various times via various routes (some involving several circuits of Abersoch) on Friday October 19 to enjoy a lovely weekend, based in Rhydolion on the peninsula. Pictured here are 19 (minus one dismally failing photographer) at the start of the walk on a glorious Saturday morning in Aberdaron. The weather was great, the mud a challenge but the scenery the clincher (a few pictures on the website soon). Two convivial evening meals and copious quantities of alcohol later the 20 returned in disparate ways via the beach, Capel y Lomax and Portmeirion on Sunday, weary but no wiser, but all content to have enjoyed a great weekend. The Sankey’s skills in the kitchen are now in great demand, along with those of Thomas’s Tour Operators and various culinary experts who exhibited their wares over the weekend.

A note from your County Councillor I would like to thank every one who took part in the bus and parking survey for Maeshafn. Although it was not a huge response these was clear support for keeping the bus stop in the centre of the village and I will now work with the bus company and highways to see what we can do to improve the service. Can I make a plea to those who park in the village centre to ask them to ensure that they leave enough room at the junctions around the village green to give the buses room to manoeuvre. There were not many suggestions for further off street parking but we are looking at the possibility of enlarging the old quarry parking area just outside the village to accommodate more visitors cars. This I believe is owned or managed by a conservation organisation and any change would be dependent on their support and finding money to complete the work. I have asked Denbighshire County Council to do what is necessary to get the Cae Derwen road adopted. This issue has apparently been going on for over seventeen years and hopefully once a copy of the revised drainage plan has been submitted the County will adopt the road. I will keep the residents up to date as soon as I know what is happening. After the elections I presented Highways with a list of roads in the ward that need attention and Tyn Llan was at the top of my list because it is the main route into the village and to the school. Sadly as they had already agreed the budgets for road works the previous year they could not include Tyn Llan in this years programme. It is that time of year again when budgets for the following year are being agreed and I have asked once again for Tyn Llan to be included. Money is tight but as this is not a large stretch of road I hope they will consider my request favourably. I have also submitted photographs to support my case. Most of us love pets and dogs are amongst the most popular animals that people keep. Sadly
though the problem of dog fouling has become a big issue and tops the list of many residents concerns through out Denbighshire. With this in mind The County Council have employed a firm to deal with this problem and they will derive their income from fixed penalties given to any one who is caught not cleaning up after their dogs. This service should not cost the tax payer a penny and fines in the Ruthin area have already been handed out. Once again I can only ask that people behave responsibly and ask that you should please clean up after your pets and dispose of the waste matter responsibly. Members attendance records have been a big issue in the local press and in county hall and I must admit that as a new councillor I have been surprised at the poor attendance at many meetings. I am pleased to confirm that my attendance to date has been 100% but I am also conscious that all the meetings I have attended do not appear in the list of formal meetings. As a member I am expected to attend all full council meetings and as I am on Corporate Governance I am expected to attend all these meetings as well. This I have done but I am also a member of the Pay and Conditions committee, Equalities committee, AONB JAC committee, Ruthin Area Group committee and I sit on a number of interview panels. I have attended all of the compulsory training days and the vast majority of the non compulsory training and County briefings. As your member I fully intended when elected to give as much time as was required to do the job and I have very little sympathy for those who take the salary but take very little part in the counties committees and meetings Best wishes. An introduction to crafts (7pm on Thursdays in the Village Hall excepting Nov. 1st) THE first craft class on October 18 proved a great success and was well attended. Those present tried their hand at painting; firstly on paper and then fabric. Because of the number who attended, the price will be ÂŁ8 per week and include all materials required for the taster sessions. The numerous crafts covered will include ribbon weaving, cross stitch, card making, Christmas decorations and felt work. Flintshire VegShare launch Our community gardens are wonderful places and we will protect them for all who want to garden and learn in them. However, we realise that there are those who would like most, if not all, of their veg grown locally but cannot spare the time to work in the gardens regularly. These people need a reliable and regular supply - not something a community garden can do. To provide plentiful, regular veg we need a professional grower who is supported by us both financially and with our labour. Our plan is to supply 20 shares in 2013, creating a new job for a food producer in Flintshire. ‘Food security’ is not just a catch phrase. Prices are already rising and look set to soar before long. We must put in place a source of good, local veg for ourselves and our kids. How much better to pay our own grower, directly, than profitable supermarkets and hauliers for produce of unknown or distant provenance? The Plan We have a beautiful site, in Cilcain, rent free and large enough to support us initially. • 20 sharers will each commit to £45 per month, for 10 months from Feb 2013 • 4 - 5 hours per month labour on site will be needed per share (less if we are successful in obtaining more money for our grower - work in progress) plus a turn on the collection rota every two months • Sharers will receive 1/20 of all veg produced by the grower • Veg will be available for collection weekly from a point (tbc) near Mold • Quantities are not guaranteed and will vary with the seasons but we expect a share to give two people veg for the week • There may be little or no veg from mid-March to end May (unless we have access to locally produced supplies and a way to pay for them). • Sharers must be members of FlintShare (joining cost £24 per year, £36 per couple) As a member of FlintShare you join in with directing our future with your vote and have access to all the community gardens and events. Nature Notes As autumn takes hold and the trees assume their seasonal hues it is noticeable that some trees turn yellow and golden yet others, of the same species and age, (Beech being a notable example) remain fully green. I have no explanation for this anomaly but have observed it in previous years. The woodlands are quiet at this time of year with very little bird song as the birds are trying to store up fat reserves to help them through the winter. One hears the quiet call notes of Tits and the muted song of Robins and, perhaps, the mewing calls of a Buzzard but most birds are silent. Many are also keeping a low profile while they complete their autumn moult and grow their winter feathers and, at this intermediate stage, some acquire an odd appearance. It would be easy to think the woodlands were devoid of life yet a miniature world exists in the leaf litter and especially in dead and rotten wood. One needs a hand lens to see some of them but in the fissures of rotten wood can be discovered a myriad of mini creatures. Several species of Woodlice can easily be seen as also can the Centipedes and Millipedes which quickly scuttle away but there are 4mm long Springtails capable of making enormous leaps in relation to their size, propelled by a tuning fork like organ tucked under the abdomen. Thread sized Worms reside here alongside diminutive Spiders against which 'Money-spiders' look like monsters of imagination. There are Slugs and Snails half the size of a grain of rice and tiny fungi in yellow
or green and some that look like minute honeycombs. There are complex tunnel systems in the wood, made by the grubs of Woodboring beetles, which have been backfilled with detritus as the grubs mine their way forward in search of nutrition. From the outside, there are holes pecked by Woodpeckers, Great tits or Nuthatches to extract the grubs which they find by listening for the sound of the grubs gnawing at the wood. A vibrant eco-system exists, all helping to break down the wood and return it to fertilise the next generation of trees. In the "News & Views" issue for June 2007 I wrote about a strange looking bird that had been seen in local gardens. It was a female House sparrow with a white back, white markings on the wings and white bars on the tail. It was around for some time then disappeared, or at least I had not seen it. That is until mid September this year when it turned up in the garden. If it is the same bird, it is doing quite well as most sparrows only live for two or three years, although the oldest recorded in the wild was twelve years old. I wonder if it is the same bird or whether it is a progeny which has inherited its ancestor's colouration. Have any readers seen it during the past few years?
