Welcome Just take a look at the calendar on page 6 to see the busy month ahead locally - only 4 days in the month without an event of some sort! Harvest supper, art exhibition, craft sessions, bowls, whist drive, dancing, Loggfest and not forgetting the exciting and hugely fun News & Views fund raising quiz night. On a more serious note, we would like to alert all cat owners to the existence of possibly a local person with an air rifle who recently shot one of our cats - Lulu. Thankfully after an operation to remove the pellet (which was 2mm away from her heart) Lulu has made a

Harvest Supper Do come along on Thursday 4th October to our Harvest Supper at 6.30 pm in the Village Hall (probably won't eat till 7 pm or later). It helps enormously with catering and table-laying if you let Churchwardens know that you are intending to come (telephone numbers on page 46). Village Show The Village Garden Club Committee invited St Berres to hold a stall at the Show on Saturday 1st September and Rob, Noel & Gay stepped in to man this and various Church members made cakes and other produce to sell. Around £113 was made for Church funds, from which a small donation will be made to the Garden Club. Our thanks to the Committee for this opportunity. The Garden Club Show Committee work extremely hard to put on the Show and it is a very well supported Village event. Northern Cleft Foundation Update People will remember that Llanferres Church, through Drs Wendy and Nigel Shillito's enjoyable Pancake Evening, has raised money for the Northern Cleft Foundation. The money raised, £420, by the Pancake Evening was added to money raised by Rotary Club of Mold and Mold Alun School and the combined sum made it possible to obtain grants exceeding £10,500 in value from The Rotary Foundation. The purchase of equipment amounting to around £15,700 has followed. A hand-over ceremony of most of the equipment to the NCF took place in Nagpur on 24th August 2012. . Donations Saint Berres is moving into the 21st Century !! You can now donate to church funds by text Simply text FERR99 £5 to 70070 - other amounts can be donated; e.g. replace £5 with £1, £2 or £10. Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE With autumn upon us, I start to think of warming comfort food and this is a great recipe that can either be served as a stew with potatoes and veg or made into a pie. For slow cook recipes such as this I would always make a large batch and freeze some. The secret with this is the long slow cook producing meat that falls apart on the fork.

Beef & Ale Casserole 750 g chuck steak, cut into 5cm/2in pieces 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large carrot, peeled and cut into chunks 1 large onion, peeled and cut into chunks 2 sticks celery, rough chopped 500ml beer sprigs fresh thyme 1 head garlic, cut in half horizontally 375g mushrooms 2 tbsp plain flour

Place the beef in a large bowl and pour over the beer marinade. Cover and place in the fridge overnight. Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the carrot, onion, garlic and celery and cook for 2-3 minutes. Add flour and stir in until incorporated and coloured. Add beef, beer and thyme. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Pour into a casserole dish with a well fitting lid. Place in the oven at 150C/300F/Gas 2 and cook for 2 –3 hours or until the beef is very tender. Check occasionally to ensure it is not drying out.

Llanferrres Over 60s Club At our September meeting we had Alun Williams talking about his beautiful wood carving. He brought a selection of his work and explained about the different types of wood he likes to use and how he decides what to turn it into. His pieces are all so varied - animals, birds, a dolphin, and even an umbrella!! He passed them around for us to feel, and we all very much enjoyed the afternoon. On October 9th we are having a talk on the history of “Operation Christmas Child”. How the Charity has grown and what they are doing now. We will also be given the final details for the visit to the Albert Dock. Olive and Betty Olive 810 294

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club 38th Annual Show Sept. 1st 2012 We all know that we have experienced what is officially the wettest Summer for a hundred years. However, despite a significant reduction in the number of entries in the Garden and Flower classes, the entrants were complimented on the quality of their displays. The Floral Art arrangements made an outstanding first impression as visitors entered the hall. In the Home, Photographic, Art and Handicraft Sections there was an increase in the number of entries and the high standard displayed made the judges task very difficult. The entrants in the Junior classes were particularly congratulated on the quality of their work. The trophies were presented by Mrs Glenys Roberts, a founder member of the Gardening Club. The refreshment area organised by Mary Barton and her helpers was very popular and special thanks are due to Betty Cook who made the cakes and scones. Our thanks are due to Ruth Calcraft of Denbighshire Countryside Services for the hillforts display and to Alun Williams for showing examples of his woodcarving . St Berres` Church cake stall and the RNLI stalls were well supported and the proceeds of the Auction of produce ( £85-£90 )will support the Llanferres Senior Citizens Welfare Committee. Our thanks are due to the Judges for their support ,and to everyone who contributed to the Plant Stall, the Raffle prizes, and the Bottle Stall. Also to everyone who helped with the setting up of the Show and the organisation on the day. Not least, thanks to the entrants and to our visitors, without whom there would be no Show! ……………………………………………………………….

A note from your County Councillor The summer is now over and many of you may be running out of the pink bin bags. New supplies should have arrived this month but due to major changes in the bin collection service in our area you may have to use your own black bags for the next few weeks for general rubbish. The county is now rolling out a new bin collection service as from October and this will involve bins for food waste and where practical wheelie bins for recycling, garden waste and other rubbish. In some areas it may not be possible to use bins and a new style of bag will be introduced. All Community Councils will be briefed in the next few weeks and residents will then be advised as to which service they will receive.

discussed and agreed I will be able to give you more details over the coming months. Education is top of the list but issues such as dog fouling are also a major concern to most residents and communities. Watch this space for more details.

Finally I will be completing a survey in Maeshafn by the end of September and I hope everyone living there will take part and at the same time I also hope to drop off the first of the OWL leaflets as We are now coming to the final stages of mentioned in the last issue. the work that has been done on the Counties Local Development Plan. Land for Rent

The good news is that no further land has been identified in the communities of Llanferres/Maeshafn but we are being asked to consider land for up to an additional 34 properties in the village of Llanarmon Yn Ial. The county is now looking at its priorities for the next five years and as these are

Nature Notes So far this has been a disastrous year for butterflies with all the rain and low temperatures. Because they are easily seen, butterflies are regarded as "the canary in the coal mine" of the countryside because, if they are doing badly, so are most other insects and the countryside is not in a good state. However, perhaps all is not yet lost. I went out on Friday 10th August, which was a hot and sunny day, and recorded eleven species, although for four of them I only saw single specimens. Somewhat of an anomaly, over a local barley field I counted well over fifty white butterflies, the vast majority of which were Green-veined whites as far as I was able to ascertain. All whites tend to be classed as 'cabbage whites' but the Green-veined is no threat to gardeners as its caterpillars only feed on wild members of the cruciferae family. During the last few months I have been receiving reports from people who think they have seen Polecats. I have seen myself what I thought was a Polecat and one was found dead on the road. There are certainly Polecats in the district as I have positively identified them in the past but the strange thing is they are being seen during the day when they are normally nocturnal animals, although books do record that they sometimes will hunt by day. In appearance they resemble a dark Ferret(which are descendants of the Polecat) with white face markings. Sometimes they breed with escaped Ferrets and produce 'Polecat-ferrets' which have much whiter faces. Feeding on small creatures such as

mice, voles, frogs and worms they are seldom a nuisance but might take small birds and were persecuted in the past by gamekeepers, being regarded as a threat to game bird chicks, and were hunted for their pelts to a point of near extinction. They are fairly common throughout Wales but very rare in other parts or the UK. Because they have a strong smell they are also known as Foulmarts. Being awake at about three o'clock one morning I was startled to hear, what I thought to be, a Corncrake. I jumped out of bed and leaned out of the window where I was able to hear it again and sure enough it was a Corncrake, calling as it flew overhead, and I could hear it for a minute or so as it gradually became fainter. There were probably several and the calls would be 'contact calls' used to keep the flock together. Once a very common bird on farmland they are now mainly to be found in Ireland and on some Scottish islands their numbers having been decimated elsewhere by modern farming methods. At night their 'crek crek' calls are so noisy and persistent that they can keep people awake. A summer visitor, they overwinter in eastern Africa, migrating at night, which is probably what they were doing when I heard them. During the breeding season they appear to be weak flyers and prefer to run for safety rather than fly but are able to adopt a much stronger flight system when migrating.
