LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At our last meeting we had an illustrated talk by Jean Sellers from North Clwyd Animal Rescue. She brought her dog with her, which is a wonderful, healthy, happy example of the work that they do. Every animal they take in is found a new home, or looked after for the rest of its life. They rescue dogs, cats, kittens (at present more than usual) and recently have included rabbits. At the October meeting on Tuesday 8th, we will hear about the experiences of Rev. Ray Bailey as a Minister on the island of St. Helena. On Wednesday 16th October Betty is organising an afternoon trip. We will leave Tyn Llan at 2.00pm going to Betws-y-Coed then via Conway Valley to Conway and Llandudno where we stop for fish and chips returning along the sea front via Colwyn Bay. Church News Services in October 3rd 7.00 pm Harvest Evensong 6th 9.30 am Morning Worship 13th 9.30 am Morning Worship 20th 9.30 am Holy Communion 27th 9.30 am Morning Worship Harvest Thanksgiving The origins of churches celebrating Harvest Thanksgiving are relatively modern. A vicar in Cornwall first set aside a Sunday in the autumn to thank God for the harvest in 1843. Although we shall be decorating our church with flowers and produce, we are encouraging people to join us in supporting the work of our local food banks. Churchwardens have a list of the items most needed but it contains products such as small packets of cereals and small packets or tins of fruit, vegetables and meat. Our Harvest Evensong is on Thursday 3rd October at 7.00 pm, so come along and sing the usual Harvest hymns and enjoy a few sandwiches and cakes afterwards. The church will be decorated on Wednesday 2nd October 2 pm onwards. We would be grateful for any help in the form of flower-arranging or gifts. Sponsored Walk For the first time we have organised a sponsored walk in aid of Llanferres Church. We shall, out of the proceeds, also make a significant donation to the Mold Community Hospital X-ray Machine Appeal. The walk, to take place on 19th October, beginning at 10 am, starts and ends at the Druid Inn. It is a circular walk in the countryside around Llanferres, either 1 hour or 2 hours long. Sponsorship forms may be obtained from churchwardens or Mrs Daryl Austin, tel: Chef Armstrong demonstrates his skills 810611 or daryl.austin4@gmail.com. They can also be accessed on the News & Views website. www.llanferres.org This should be a good opportunity for a leisurely walk and should be a good social occasion, as well as raising money for good causes. Confirmation Service in Mold Two candidates from Llanferres will be confirmed by the Bishop on Sunday 20th October at St Mary, Mold at 3.00 pm. Confirmation services are always very uplifting and it is good support our confirmation candidates.

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE SQUASH, RED LENTIL & COCONUT SOUP Culinary thoughts inevitably turn to soup once autumn is upon us. This is a fantastic recipe that is equally good for Saturday lunch, a Halloween party or even a dinner party with a good garnish. It works well with any solid squash such as a pumpkin or butternut or if you are lucky some more exotic varieties you may have grown. To serve 4 Pumpkin or squash - about 500g 225g red lentils 3/4 litre vegetable stock 250ml coconut milk 2 onions 2 tbsp olive oil salt & pepper Sautee chopped onions in oil. Add roughly chopped squash and lentils and stir for 2 - 3 minutes. Add stock and continue to cook for a further 30 minutes until squash is soft. Add coconut milk and heat gently. Puree soup, taste and season. Toasted pumpkin seeds would make a perfect garnish to make this extra special. Wash and dry seeds. Place on a baking sheet and sprinkle with a little salt and place in a hot oven for about 10 mins or until just turning golden.

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club Show Report On September 7th our Annual Show was held in the Village Hall. This highlight in the Village Calendar was once again well supported and well attended. The range of produce on show was again of a quality that earned praise from Judge Mr Allington Jones. Most classes were on a par with previous years from our regular entrants, only the home section showed a decrease. Members had worked hard to ensure the success of the show once again. The trophies were presented by Mrs Betty Cook to people who were justly proud of their entries in all sections. The refreshment department was skilfully organised by Mary Barton, her friend Sheila Hartman and aided by other members on an ad hoc basis. Well done! The cakes and scones made by Betty Cook were truly welcome. Our thanks to John Morris of Denbighshire Countryside Services, the R.N.L.I. and Pat Armstrong for their efforts to add interest on Show day. With funds raised from the entrance fees, teas, bottle stall, raffle and plant stall, it was once again a financial success. The auction of produce at the end of the show raised ÂŁ67.70 which, as usual, will be donated to the Llanferres Pensioners Welfare Committee. Our thanks to all who entered and to all who came to visit the show on September 7th. In 2014 we will hold our 40th show but need to enrol more members to ensure this Annual Show continues in the future. Next month's meeting of the Club will be on Monday October 14th at 7.30pm when we will welcome back the ever popular Ray Bailey who, on this occasion, will give a talk entitled "Winter Gardening". With that season rapidly approaching, it is appropriate to be prepared and this talk should give useful hints and advice on what to do to keep your garden looking attractive during the dark months.

AS ALWAYS, VISITORS WILL BE MOST WELCOME Show Secretary Mr David Jones ( 810511

Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond ( 810808

Llanferres in the Great War By early 1915 there was stalemate on the Western Front. After the initial German advance and the so called "miracle of the Marne" where the invading armies were finally stopped less than 50 miles from Paris, the tide began to turn and the British and French armies went onto the offensive.

the Admiralty, Winston Churchill believed a second front was essential, and the ill conceived Gallipoli campaign was launched. He saw Turkey, the so called "sick man of Europe" reeling from a disastrous series of Balkan wars, where much of the Ottoman Empire was lost, as the "soft underbelly" of the Central Powers - an obsession he was to carry into WW2 strategy in What followed was a complex series of North Africa and Italy. outflanking engagements as the armies moved north in the misnamed "race to the sea" with the In essence, the plan was simple - the navy would Germans invariably taking the high ground, and force the Dardanelle Straights (the site of ancient the Western Front was formed, 450 miles from Troy) and after having reduced the forts guarding the Swiss border to the Belgian coast. them sail to Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) and Turkey would surrender and be After the initial shock back in Britain and the taken out of the war. realisation that the war would not be over by Christmas 1914 the politics began to surface with The bombardment was largely unsuccessful, and two distinct camps and trains of thought. The British and French fleets attempted to force the Narrows on March 18th 1915 but ran into an undetected minefield. Both HMS Ocean and Irresistible were sunk and Inflexible badly damaged and beached. The fleet was withdrawn shortly afterwards due to submarine activity but maintained an effective blockade for the rest of the campaign. HMS Irresistible sinks off Gallipoli

After a series of inconclusive engagements involving British and French and the newly formed ANZAC divisions at Helles, Anzac Cove and Sulva Bay the troops were finally withdrawn in January 1916 after an 8 month campaign which claimed another quarter of a million casualties, the majority of those from enteric fever, dysentery and other illness rather than direct warfare. One of those to die was another local soldier, Serjeant Walter Augustus

Fernyhough, of the Loyal North Lancs 6th Batallion, in September 1915, aged 25, and barely a month in the Dardanelles. I hope to tell his story in the next edition. Throughout the campaign the Turks, under German leadership, fought tenaciously, and although ultimately defeated, some national pride was restored and modern Turkey was later re-born under the Atat端rk, Mustafa Kemal, who also fought in the war.

News & Views 21 One of the most remarkable photographs of the war (although probably staged) shows Corporal Seyit Çabuk carrying one, of three, 275 kilo shells after his gun limber was destroyed during the initial bombardment, one shell, allegedly, hit HMS Ocean, although the pre-dreadnought actually finally sank after hitting a mine attempting to rescue Irresistible. Mustafa Kemal, a fierce critic of Turkey's involvement in the war, nonetheless commanded the 19th Division attached to the 5th Army throughout. His words to his troops prior to the Anzac Cove invasion, "I don't order you to fight, I order you to die. In the time it takes us to die, other troops and commanders can come and take our place" mellowed somewhat in later years (below). From the British point of view, as unsuccessful as the actual campaign was, the withdrawal itself from very difficult terrain was an amazing undertaking. Over a phased period of just a few days, and from multiple locations, using an ingenious array of timed gun firings (some even operated by water mechanisms) every soldier was withdrawn without a single casualty and totally unbeknown to the opposing forces. A defeated Turkey, in other theatres, signed an armistice in October 1918, and as a last gesture a large fleet of dreadnoughts sailed the now unguarded "Narrows" formed an arc of ships facing Constantinople, slowly raised their huge 15 inch guns, and then departed.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD I apologise for bringing up Christmas so soon, but it will be too late when the November edition comes out. Last year we organised a collection of Christmas Shoe Boxes for children in third world countries where they barely have enough to eat never mind things to play with. I would like to repeat it this year so am asking for support to collect as many boxes as possible. I will be circulating leaflets explaining all the details and my house, No 21 Tyn LIan will be the Collection point. It’s quite simple: get a shoe box, cover it with Christmas paper, and add items such as sweets ,toys, drawing, painting and writing materials, picture books, warm caps, gloves, and toiletries, and deliver to me. The boxes are taken to packing centres where every one is checked sealed, crated and sent off in tine for Christmas. If there is difficulty obtaining a box or covering it get in touch and I will do my best to help.

A note from your County Councillor I arrived home yesterday after an unplanned trip to the US to support my mother through an operation which I am pleased to say went well. Sadly it meant that I have missed a number of events in the area including the village show and the Tour of Britain which passed through Loggerheads and Llanferres. I am pleased to say that I am now back in harness and working my way through my e-mails and post. If you are waiting for a reply please bear with me. As most of you will now know the plans for a children's play area at Moel Famau were passed at the last meeting of the Counties Planning Committee. As promised I tried to speak to as many people as possible along Forestry Road and in Tafarn Y Gelyn before I left for the States. Although most people had nothing against the play area in principle a lot of residents were justifiably concerned about the possible increase in traffic through that area. I relayed those concerns to the planning committee before I left but the County and Natural Resources Wales said this would not be a problem and only time will tell if this was the correct decision. On a personal note I did feel that to spend ÂŁ70k on a play area in these difficult times was not necessarily the best use of limited resources especially

when we are still looking for funds for the additional parking at Loggerheads. Many people have expressed concerns about developments in the Big Covert near Mashafn where some of the new owners of parcels of the woodland have started to develop their plots with buildings and other structures. Concerns have also been expressed about hedges and fences that are appearing and signs stating that parts of the woodlands are now private. I have visited the woods and I am working with the County to ensure that all the new owners comply with planning regulations and the rules regarding the felling of trees. Can I remind you all that members of the public can still use the designated public footpaths through the woods. I have recently been appointed to the Counties Local Development Plan committee where I will help to monitor and review the new LDP. I still have concerns about the LDP and I look forward to taking an active part in the review process. Autumn is now on its way and Christmas will be with us before we know it. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance during the coming months.

Best wishes, Martyn

Nature Notes A recent addition to British fauna has been the Tree Bumblebee(Bombus hypnorum). It is common in mainland Europe but, for unknown reasons, has now colonised Britain. It was first seen in Wiltshire in 2001 but since then has spread widely and is now throughout England and Wales but not yet Scotland, although it has reached Iceland where it was first seen in 2008. It is thought it will thrive in Iceland round Reykjavik but not move into the open countryside as it is a species that likes to be near human habitation. It nests above ground and often uses bird boxes, of which there are plenty in British gardens, and this might be why it has spread so rapidly. In appearance it is unmistakable as there is no other bumblebee in Britain like it. It has a ginger thorax, a black abdomen and a white tail. The queen is usually large in size, the drones(males) even larger but the workers are quite small. Like all bumblebees, it is not aggressive except if it feels its nest is being attacked. It has a short breeding cycle - it emerges from hibernation in March and the cycle is completed by June or early July, depending on the season. A smaller second generation can be produced in late summer in favourable years.

A plant that seems to have done well this year is Devil's-bit Scabious (Succisa pratensis). Usually regarded as a plant of damp places (it is the food plant of the rare Marsh fritillary) I have also found it thriving in comparatively arid situations where it grew in large drifts, the pincushion like flowers creating a haze of purpleblue in August, much appreciated by butterflies and other insects. I found it hosting large numbers of Small tortoiseshell, Comma, Peacock, Gatekeeper and Meadow brown butterflies along with smaller numbers of Red admiral, Painted lady, Wall brown and 'Cabbage' whites. Especially when the sun was out, Bees, Bumblebees and Hover flies swarmed over the flowers to steal nectar. It is claimed that of all our wild flowers, very few attract more butterflies and nearly all types of bees and my personal experience would support that claim.

But why does such an attractive flower have such a sinister name? In the 17th century it was believed that the plant had curative powers - the herbalist Nicholas Culpeper claimed that a concoction made from the roots could cure snake-bite, swollen throats, wounds and plague. This so angered the devil that he bit off part of the root to try to stop its good works and this explains why the plant I first recorded it in Cheshire in 2011 has the abruptly shortened roots it and saw it again at Eyarth Rocks near has today. It was also used to produce Ruthin this year when it was also a blue dye. photographed in a garden on Merseyside, so one can assume it is widespread here in the west of Britain. John Almond
