Welcome Welcome to the October edition of News & Views. There’s lots going on in the community again this month, following on from a busy September that saw another successful Gardening Club Show, a great Race Night in aid of the Carnival and The Vale of Clwyd Classic Car Rally. Well done to all the organisers. October sees the Halloween Bingo, the Arts Group events at Loggerheads and a working party on the pond. And don’t forget to support the ‘Wear it Pink’ charity day at Loggerheads Garage on the 20th. News & Views Update: We will be continuing News & Views, in this slightly revised format, up until Christmas whilst we (hopefully) gradually hand over to new editors, who aim to takeover in the new year, if things work out. So please do continue to send in your news, pictures and forthcoming events. Best Wishes Paul & Siobhan

Local Mews These beautiful kittens were found early on Wed 13th Sept, believed to have been abandoned by their mother who is living wild in the village. They were very lucky as it had been a cold and wet night and would probably had died had Sam, from the pub, not taken Baz for a walk through the church yard. They are now at the animal rescue centre in Trelogan who have asked that anyone in the village who has a cat to do the responsible thing and have them neutered to stop anymore unwanted kittens. Thank you Sam and Baz, Jen and Polly cat rescuers extraordinaire

Local News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club 43rd Annual Show A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the Annual Village Show on 2nd September, including exhibitors, judges, those who attended the show and those who helped in the task of setting up and clearing up afterwards. The number of entries was higher than they have been in recent years and were up by more than 50% on last year! Admissions were also up on last year and there was great interest in the bottle stall. The proceeds of the auction were, as usual, donated to the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund. We look forward to an equally successful 44th Annual Show in 2018. The speaker at the next meeting of the Garden Club at 7.30 pm on 9th October is Adrian Jones who will be talking about the ‘Return of the Beaver’. You do not need to be a member of the Garden Club to attend, everyone is welcome.
Autumn Park Tidy Up We are having an autumn tidy up on the park on
Saturday 30th September 10am-12pm.
Please bring wheelbarrows / spades / forks / hedge cutters etc. Please make every effort to join in and help. Many thanks. Llanferres Playing Field and Recreation Association.

Polite Request from Concerned Cat Lover There is a black cat who is a full tom cat living in the village. He wears a collar and is seen most days on Tyn Llan and Cae Gwyn. He enters our house through our cat flap and ‘sprays’ all round the kitchen. It is an extremely acrid unpleasant smell that takes vigorous cleaning every day to get rid of. He is also aggressive to other cats and can regularly been seen and heard fighting. We have had to fit a new cat flap which only allows our cat to enter. Following ‘Operation Kitten Rescue’ the other week, and having heard of the poor condition of the ‘mummy cat’ who has now had 3 litters of kittens this year already, it is imperative that this is the last litter. Could the owner of the black tom cat please get him neutered as soon as possible. Thank you

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ It must be a sign of aging, the seasons come and go so quickly. Our short lived summer has drifted into Autumn and the sounds, sights and smells tell us that everything is changing. The swallows which were on the phone wires last week have gone. The robins song has become melancholy and they are no longer squabbling over territory. The blackbirds are returning to the gardens and most of the migrants have already departed for sub Sahara Africa. It has been a poor year for bumble bees, butterflies and the buddleia has finished early. I keep a good patch of rose-bay-willowherb, as this is wonderful for insects, and the chiffchaff nests low down in it each year, but for some reason this is dying back and shrinking. The elephant hawk moth favours the rose-bay-willowherb and I was lucky enough to find three of these magnificent caterpillars. They are about the size of a child's finger and I was able to study them with a magnifying glass to see them at their best. I hope they have a safe hibernation and will return as the very attractive pink and brown moths. Although there are mink on the river the kingfishers are still surviving and have been seen at the pond on top of Moel Findeg and at the pond at Bryn Gwyn farm. You need to be quick and lucky to catch sight of the flash of blue. I first saw kingfishers at Hooton when I was nine years old, perching on the end of my fathers fishing rod. A sight I have never forgotten! With industrial canals being cleaned up for leisure use the kingfisher is moving into areas where they haven't been seen for years.
Another sign of Autumn, I was visiting a friend on the Wirral and when leaving early evening, I heard the familiar sound of geese flying over calling to one another as they made their way to their night roost in the "V" formation. We have had a family of hedgehogs in the garden for some time, which will help with the slug problem as I don't like to use slug pellets. Gardens will be the saviour of hedgehogs, as once out in the fields they become easy prey to badgers, as their only means of defence is to curl up in a ball. This is no problem to the badger as it can use its powerful claws to quickly uncurl the hedgehog and bite its under belly. Nature is harsh. More next time.

A note from your County Councillor Summer is nearly over for another year. This means I will only have to cut the lawns a couple of times more before I clean the mower and store it for the winter. It also means that I will stop feeding my fish in the pond until next spring as they move into its murky depths for their winter hibernation. Last week we enjoyed a week in Cornwall with some friends from Florida who wanted to visit Doc Martin Country which they have been watching on PBS in America. The weather was very kind to us which is more than I can say for the Caribbean and Florida. When we were not enjoying Port Issac etc we were glued to the TV hoping that their home in mid Florida was ok. There was good news in that their home town escaped the worst of the Hurricane but many in the West Indies did not and sadly there is more to come!! August is normally a quiet month for most county councillors especially as there are few official meetings held during the month but I must admit that telephones calls and e-mails came in thick and fast and I seem to have been as busy as ever. Sadly there has been an incident of fly tipping in the community again and a number of large tree stumps were tipped in a farm gateway on the Llanferres/Maeshafn road. These were removed by the County Council the day after I reported them but it is disappointing that people feel
the need to fly tip when we have an excellent recycling centre in Ruthin. All fly tipping is a blot on the landscape and every trip to remove these items has to be paid for by the rest of us as council tax payers. Money that could be better spent on other more important services. I had asked for the gullies in Maeshafn to be cleaned and I believe that this has now been done. I have also asked for the gullies to be cleaned in all the other villages across the ward before the winter weather arrives. The rural grass verge cuts were undertaken at the end of July and a further cut should be undertaken in the next few weeks. The County try to let the wild flowers seed before undertaking this work but it is important that the first cut is completed by the end of July before the cow parsley etc gets hard and our lanes become narrower than they already are. Some further goods news regarding our local roads. Maes Y Gamedd will be repaired and top surfaced before the end of this financial year and the Llandegla/Llanarmon Yn Ial road (B5431) has just been repaired which is a vast improvement on the previous road surface. At the end of August I spent an afternoon with the senior highways engineer inspecting the roads across the ward and we have come up with a list of those that need repairing and resurfacing. As wards go we have had a number of roads repaired over the last few years but it is a never ending journey and I am still trying to get work done on roads such as Bryn Alyn.

A note from your County Councillor After a request from the Village Hall Committee I have managed to get the ceiling in the hall cleaned during the school holidays and the lights and heaters checked at the same time. The good news is that the county has picked up the bill and the work was completed before the new school term started. I would like to give the village hall a plug as an excellent venue for both public and private events and to thank the hall committee for all the work they do. At County I have been appointed once again to the Corporate Governance Committee, Performance Scrutiny, the Local Development Plan review panel, AONB Partnership body, the counties
Local Joint Consultative Committee and I now sit on the external Cadwyn Clwyd Rural Funding organisation. Finally could I make a plea please. It has been brought to my attention that people are parking in the turning bays in Tyn Llan and Maes Gwyn. To help everyone could I ask that these are kept clear so that delivery vehicles etc can use them. Thank you and best wishes, Martyn

A Mine Shaft Incident In 1863 Lieutenant James R D Cooke, Royal Artillery, was on leave and staying with his brother Mr. B G Davies Cooke at Colomendy. A shooting party was formed and Lieutenant Cooke and the gamekeeper began beating game in a plantation called Coed Ty'n y cornel adjacent to the Mold to Ruthin road and close to the junction leading to Maeshafn village. The ground suddenly gave way under Lieutenant Cooke and he was precipitated down a mine shaft that was 27 yards (25 metres) deep. Amazingly he survived but was badly bruised and his ribs were severely injured. An old miner, Zachariah Bellis, volunteered to go down the shaft on a rope and the casualty was rapidly brought to surface. Mr. Bellis received a cheque for ÂŁ10 from the grateful family for his efforts. Mr. B G Davies Cooke wrote a letter to the London Times newspaper about this incident. He claimed that he had about 100 mine shafts on his estate but no one was prepared to make them safe. The present mine shaft lay within the mineral ownership of the Lords of Mold. He had written to the mineral agent without success. The legal situation at that time appeared to be confused. It was common practice for mineral owners to use stalling tactics if a claim for damages was made against them: most claimants gave up because of the accumulating legal costs. It was not until the Metalliferous Mines Act of 1872 that the law became clearer. It is interesting to note that one of the first prosecutions under this
Act in north east Wales involved the above mine shaft. H M Inspector of Mines brought a prosecution against the Lords of Mold in 1875. He alleged that he had asked them to make the shaft safe by surrounding it with a chest high barrier (timber or stone). They had failed to do so but had raised a token fence around it. The case was too important for the local Court to make a final decision and it was sent to a higher Court. It was returned with an instruction to find that the mineral owners were responsible for making the shaft safe. The Lords of Mold were fined a nominal sum at a hearing in 1877. Even today, following the passing of the Environmental Protection Act, the situation is not entirely satisfactory. If a shaft poses a danger to the public the local authority has the power to either request the surface landowner, or occupier, to do the work, or to do the work themselves and then to bill the landowner. It is then up to the landowner, or occupier, to reclaim their expenses from the mineral owner. A well maintained stout fence is adequate security in most cases. In sensitive locations the modern acceptable practice is to excavate down to bedrock, cast a reinforced concrete slab over the shaft top and then to cover the excavation with soil. Many shafts in our area were made safe in the shaft capping programme carried out by the former Glyndwr District Council during the late 1970s. However, some shafts remain open or have been roughly covered over. The latter being potentially the most dangerous.
