Welcome Welcome to the October edition of News & Views Thank you very much to the Church for sharing the proceeds of their sponsored walk with News & Views. We received a massive £350 which will cover the entire cost of this edition. We were fortunate with the weather and the amount raised in total by the small number of walkers was astonishing. At the end of the walk we stopped to take a picture of the lovely little flower shown on the front page … the sunflower was quite pretty too and pretty impressive! Have you got a taller one than this??

Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club There was a change of programme on September 9th as the Ambulance Services were unable to send a speaker. With only 24 hours notice Carol Farrer came to speak about TRAIDCRAFT and FAIRTRADE. 30 years ago two caring people decided that our business acumen could help farmers from poor countries to produce crops that they could in turn sell here and therefore have a reasonable standard of living. Our meeting on October 8th will see the return of Mr. David Cummings who will no doubt, enthral us with his talk and film “The Wonderful World of Wildlife. Vale of Clwyd Classic A quality field of some 70 cars made the start of the 2014 Vale of Clwyd Classic based in the beautiful village of Llanferres on Saturday the 6th September. The event is now established as a round of the national Historic Rally Car Register Clubman's Rally Championship, and as always, provided the entrants with one of the toughest events of the year. A dull and drizzly morning saw competitors start to leave The Druid Inn just before 08:30 and make their way to the first driving test at nearby Loggerheads, the gauntlet thrown down by Andrew Mallagh and Paul Harley as they set the fastest time of the day on this popular car park based section. From here, crews ran back into Llanferres to attempt the first regularity section of the day, Clerk of Course Guy Woodcock was up to his usual tricks and had many crews dropping penalties within the first mile with a cleverly placed turning into a fishery just after a road junction. This wasn't the only devious slot on the first section, as further excursions onto private land along the route allowed time to be taken from the unwary. Entering into Flintshire, two driving tests at the Penbedw Estate allowed the drivers to shine. For once though, an error was forced from Blackburn's Steve Entwistle, a clipped cone costing him and Bob Hargreaves ten seconds, the damp grass based third test was proving tricky catching several crews out. A section over Moel Arthur saw a new venue used, a smooth forest section that dropped
away from the main road which was tricky to spot with the foliage covering it. Up to the first card collect, past winners, Mark 1 Escort mounted Dermot Carnegie and Paul Bosdet were leading the event. The pair were under pressure from Cestrian Howard Warren who was partnered by Iain Tullie in their Porsche 911. Mallagh and Harley had problems here, dropping 43 seconds on a midpoint control, severely denting their chances of victory. The late morning and early afternoon were test based, two forest tests held near the village of Cwm giving way to a run out to Bodelwyddan for a grass based test at local businessman Rikki Proffit's home proving popular as ever. David and Jennie Aincham proved the star performers here, their Mini 1275 GT's agility and great driving skills from David handing the husband and wife pairing a bottle of champagne donated by Rikki. It was a rewarding day for the pairing, as well as the Champagne, they picked up first in class despite having mechanical issues later in the day. Regularity three was once again an exercise in precision; navigation was via coloured junctions and led the Vale of Clwyd Classic to one of the turning points of the event on regularity four. The route presentation for this was a one inch map with one of Woodcock's favourite phrases included, 'on this map'. Roads built since the map was first used caught many of the top competitors out, costing them a maximum 2 minutes 30 seconds penalty. Warren and Tullie got the tricky junction correct and this sent them into the lead as the event headed into Clocaenog Forest for a regularity section.

Vale of Clwyd Classic Starting off easily, regularity five went down a yellow that broke into gravel, almost as quickly it went back onto tarmac, confusing some crews. Following the road down, a narrow slot 90 right into Clocaenog brought competitors to the first timing point down from Bryn Du, heading back onto the road again, easy sight lines meant most crews kept good time until a switch back into the woods saw a long, fast straight passing Cefn

Vale of Clwyd Classic Du, recently re-surfaced and slippy to keep crews on their toes. The challenge of Carnegie and Bosdet came to an end here, as a hairpin right junction with a slot before it caught them out. It wasn't just them that fell foul as many turned in too early and missed it, some spotting their mistake and able to correct it before going on too far. The last tests. The Fishy One heralded in regularity six, taking in the roads around Rhyd and Graigfechan, Gary Edgington and Pete Johnson were the class of the field here, dropping just four seconds overall on the section. Ruddock and Pullan had a bad day at the office, the luck just not running their way, the Escort pair dropping 45 seconds at the first timing point on their way to seventh overall. However, it looks like Andy Pullan has clinched both the HRCR Championship and ANWCC championship subject to final confirmation, a superb result for a lad that had his 19th birthday in May. The final section was once again designed to test the navigator, named 'Short and relaxed' the instruction was to drive over Bwlch Penbarras avoiding two spot heights. As ever, there was a catch in the organiser's instructions with one of the spot heights being detached from its figure, the other blocking the road back to the finish, the only way out was a track that went through Big Wood passing through Ted Spencer's back yard and across their field! Most crews were dialled in now and managed to find the route eventually, it seemed that most of the village of Maeshafn were out to wave the competitors on and
back to the finish under the control of Gordon Jones in full period wear! Once the results went final, it was clear that even after his admission that he hadn't driven to his usual standards on the tests, Howard Warren and Iain Tullie had clinched a superb win after coming second on all of the last three runnings of the event. Speaking after the Vale of Clwyd Classic, it was clear that Howard relished the victory and said, "I think that this is one of the best rounds in the HRCR championship, all credit really has to go to the navigators on this event, it was Iain that made a vital decision that put us one step closer to the win during the course of the day, Clwyd Vale put on a superb mix of tests and regularities." The win was made even sweeter for the Chester based businessman as his business partner Chas Colton took second overall partnered by the ever cheerful Ryan Pickering. In third were locals Pete Welch and Richard Bestwick, One of the drives of the day came from Clive Baty and Henry Carr in their Renault 5, finishing the day in 11th, they were pipped out of the top ten by just one second by David Morgan & Martyn Taylor, the diminutive Renault boasting just 1300cc and driven with Baty's usual flair and exuberance. The Vale of Clwyd Classic seems to go from strength to strength each year, the buzz around Llanferres was plain to see and hear as crews milled about prior and post event. It seems that the organisers have a real job on their hands to go better next year, but hearing the plans for the 2015 running from Guy Woodcock, it could possibly be quite epic.

Gardening Club News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting of Monday 15th September was held at the Druid, thanks to the generosity of Julie, to whom we are truly grateful. Our guest speaker, Sue Beesley, gained fame for winning BBC gardener of the year and subsequently bought Bluebell Cottage Nursery. In her talk she showed that spring, summer, autumn and winter can be most pleasing in a garden, when herbaceous plants are used in rotational order. With pictures from her extensive gardens, which showed her borders were full of colour from the spring hellebores and primulas; summer agastache and echinacea - so loved by bees; autumn heleniums and sedums and on to winter. At the start of the year bulbs are flowering amongst the verdant re-growth. Everyone present was in admiration of our speaker and her garden and all agreed it should be 'a must' visit for next year's syllabus. Our next meeting on Monday 13th October will be in the Village hall when we will discuss this year's show - including the final financial figures. The £90·00 proceeds from our show auction has been handed to Mrs Austin, the Treasurer of the O.A.P. Welfare Committee to help with its funds.

( 810808 EXPLANATION Last month in News & Views I reported that the September meeting of the Garden Club had been cancelled. The reason for this was a number of small misunderstandings, (errors, mistakes, oversights, incongruities, memory lapses – call them what you will) that escalated into a crisis. I have been told that some people considered my use of the word intransigence maligned Mr Rob Armstrong and impugned his integrity. That was certainly not my intention, it seemed the appropriate word to use in the situation (Oxford Dictionary definition, ‘unwilling or refusing to change one’s views or to agree about something). However, if Rob feels that he has been denigrated I am sorry and I am happy to publicly apologise to him for any distress that it has caused him personally. I have spoken to Rob and we have “agreed to disagree”, to put the matter behind us and to move on so that we can co-operate in other matters, as we have successfully done in the past.

Yet again we had over 60 volunteers who helped out all over the Clwydian Hills to ensure the Scott Mountain Bike Marathon could take place. This has raised £2000 towards the maintenance costs and future replacement of park equipment for the LPFRA. Local News LLANFERRES VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Following last month’s regrettable mix-up over a double booking - may I respectfully remind all organisations with a regular block booking, that in the event of wishing to vary a meeting date it is expected that in the first instance an approach would be made to the representative of any other group whose bookings may be in conflict. Gilly is a brilliantly efficient Caretaker and Bookings Clerk - but she ain’t psychic!! Would all village organisations please note that the AGM is on Thursday 6th November (always the first Thursday) and your organisation’s secretary is required to return your nomination slip to Gay by this date at the very latest. Please only nominate a rep for your group who will be willing and able to attend meetings (usually 3 per year each lasting less than an hour plus AGM of less than 3 hours) This is your forum and the way in which we support each other’s organisations. Please note the Treasurer will be retiring at this AGM and nominations for his replacement are also sought. NB - Rob Armstrong is Whist Group representative. New regulations - “The consumption of alcohol in the Village Hall will only be allowed with the specific authorisation of the Executive Committee. There shall be a right to appeal to a full committee”. To arrange consumption of alcohol, it is necessary only to contact one member of the Executive Committee (currently Mr Rob Armstrong Chairman / Mrs Gay Headley - Secretary / Mr David Twomey - Treasurer) who will discuss your request with the other two members and respond within 24 hours. It is unlikely that any reasonable request will be refused. This amendment to our Constitution was designed to enable more people in the community to make use of our facilities whilst remaining constitutional. The original wording (not adhered to by some previous Executive Committees) provided only for the consumption of alcohol at private functions; i.e. those not open to the general public. We want our hall to be available to all who wish to use it, but we need to do things properly. Thank you Gay Headley (Secretary)

VILLAGE HALL - CLARIFICATION Regarding the unfortunate double booking of the Village Hall, the following points will help to clarify the position taken by the chairman of the Village Hall Committee:· Since 2012 the Whist Club has been advertised to start on the 3rd Monday of September. · For 2 years the group have met on Monday evenings, always avoiding the 2nd Monday of the month as the Gardening Club meet then, in the hall. · Our members are reminded monthly (on the first Monday) that we do not meet on the 2nd Monday. · All members were told during our last meeting the date of the start of the new season, i.e. September 15th. Reference to the start of the Whist season being the 3rd Monday of September is also stated in previous village hall committee minutes (as Whist is run to support the village hall). · We did not meet on the 1st Monday in September, as School had not yet opened. We avoided the 2nd, as usual, because of the Gardening Club meetings, and therefore started on the 3rd Monday (for 3 consecutive years). · We were unaware of any clash of dates until late in August, when we were informed by the editor of N&V who fortunately realised that there had been a double booking, prior to publishing. · We presumed that the Gardening Club had made a mistake, as they always meet on the 2nd Monday. · Many of our members live outside of Llanferres (Cilcain, Pantymwyn, Rhydymwyn, Caergwrle and Mold). · We were aware that many members were away on holiday during the beginning of Sep‐ tember. · To attempt to bring our scheduled meeting forward to the 8th, as was demanded at the very end of August, and also to cancel the pre-arranged meeting of the 15th September, was not possible – due to both the longstanding prior arrangement, the difficulties contacting our members and the lateness of this demand. · With earlier negotiation, changes could have been more easily accommodated. · Having consulted with the village hall executive committee, it was agreed that we should meet as usual. · Alternative venues were suggested, but dismissed by the Gardening Club, who insisted that they “had no option but to cancel the meeting”. · Unfortunately, the statement in the News and Views regarding cancellation was made prior to the Gardening Club arrangement to meet elsewhere. · We are pleased that another option was available and the eventual outcome for both groups was positive. The Gardening Club met at the Druids as suggested, and the Whist met as usual in the Village Hall. · Apparently, both meetings were highly successful, which is the main aim of all con‐ cerned. I wish to emphasise that to be described as “intransigent” (refusing to change one’s attitude) is incorrect and unjustified. After due consideration and consultation, at such short notice I could not feasibly change the date of the meeting. It was not, as implied, that I would not. Hopefully the suggestion included in the News & Views by the Secretary of the Village Hall Committee will avoid any similar occurrence and we can all move forward amicably, in the interests of our entire village. R Armstrong Chairman of the Village Hall Committee

CANCER RESEARCH COLLECTION I have undertaken an annual collection in Llanferres for this worthy cause for 3 years now and have recently been informed of the figure for this June’s collection, which was £169.88. The figures for 2012 and 2013 were £116.03 and £149.88 respectively, so as you can see, the amount is steadily rising. Last year the Mold Committee raised £40,000 in total and the House to House Collections alone raised a whopping £3,445, of which almost 85p in every pound raised does go directly to research in Lancaster, Liverpool and very importantly for us, North West Cancer Research Institute at Bangor University. So, I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to the people of Llanferres for their generosity ... ...see you again next June. Jean Leath

A note from your County Councillor What an amazing year for weather last month autumn had arrived and now we are back to mid summer with bumper crops of all wild fruits in our hedge rows. What an amazing year for the UK. By the time you read this article we will know the results of the Scottish independence debate and sadly I believe that what ever the result the UK will not be the same again. More change is inevitable for us all and recriminations are bound to follow. I only hope that the great rifts that have appeared in Scottish society can heal quickly.
at the number of talented people of all ages in the village. Our thanks should go again to all those involved in organising the day. There is a lot of work, time and effort put into getting it right on the day and there is always a worry that you may not get enough entries. This was not a problem this year.
September was also the month for a number of sporting events. Again I was grateful to the organisers of the Classic Car Rally for the invitation to start the rally and to wave off each car with the Welsh Flag. Over seventy cars took part and many of the participants had travelled from all over the country to be there, good news for local businesses. The only worry was the fact that As a governor of Ysgol Bro Famau I like I remembered driving many of the cars in everyone else was very pleased by the my youth, I must be getting old!! excellent Estyn report the school has just received. Nature Notes One never knows what will turn up in the garden. Only this week, briefly, I had a female Whitethroat foraging for insects on herbaceous plants and in the Dahlia patch. I presume it was a bird on passage to its wintering grounds in sub-Saharan Africa. This is not a bird of small gardens, preferring open scrubby areas with brambles in which it likes to nest. It used to be a quite common species but numbers plummeted in 1969 due to a disastrous drought in the Sahel and it has never fully recovered. Then two days later a Chiffchaff was singing in a garden tree. It is not that rare to see this bird in the garden during spring or summer but I have not seen one for a while, so this was probably also on passage. The species is unusual in that it continues to sing so late in the season, while most birds cease to sing once they are nesting. Friends here in Llanferres, had a Fritillary butterfly in their garden in August but were not able to make a positive identification. The fritillaries are notoriously difficult to identify as the upper surface of their wings are very similar and it is necessary to examine the undersides to separate the species. However, size and time of year are also good indicators as the species emerge in succession to lay eggs on the larval food plant of Dog Violet. I will make an educated guess that this specimen was a Dark green fritillary, based on time of year and the species I know to exist in our area.
while uttering their very characteristic calls. It is claimed that 75% of the world's Choughs live in Wales. I became aware of several butterflies flying past and realised that there were many Red admirals about. This is a common butterfly that migrates to this country in varying numbers every year from central and southern Europe. It produces one brood here and then it was thought all the butterflies died off with the onset of winter. It is now known that some do overwinter successfully but I speculated whether the ones I saw on the Lleyn were preparing to fly out to sea and on to Europe. Not much seems to be known about their autumn migration except that throughout Britain they tend to move in a southerly direction with the coming of autumn.
There are many Bumblebees still to be seen especially on garden flowers, although most belong to only three species - the Buff-tailed (Bombus terrestris), the White-tailed (Bombus lucorum) and the Carder bee (Bombus pascuorum). The workers of the first two are virtually indistinguishable because the Bufftailed workers have white tails. By now all Bumblebee nests will have ceased to function, the old queens will have died and the new queens will be in hibernation, so what we are seeing are either males or workers with no nest to return to, so they just spend their time feeding on nectar and close inspection will show that they are not Visiting the south coast of the Lleyn collecting pollen. They also will die Peninsula recently I was watching shortly. the acrobatics of a number of Choughs as they tumbled in the air John Almond 01352 810808
