Welcome Welcome to the October edition of News & Views. There is a definite ‘whiff’ of Autumn in the air and the first trees are just starting to turn. We are so fortunate to live in an area where the autumn trees provide spectacular colour throughout October. The village was very sad to hear that Colin Carney passed away. Colin and Rosie were landlord and lady at the the Druid many years ago and are fondly remembered. Sympathies go to Paddy, Gilly, Josh and Louie The art exhibition by local amateur artists takes place at Loggerheads Country Park on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October. Hope you can find time to go along and have a look - you’ll be amazed at the talent, and these paintings make great and affordable Christmas gifts!

There are a few advance notices for events coming up in November, so make sure you get these on your calendars now so you don’t forget! There’s a handsome chap looking for a good home on page 32, are you able to help? Finally congratulations to Lauren (nee O’Garra) and Daniel Jones and also to Tom and Jess Healy on their recent weddings. You can see photos of both happy couples on page 7. Doesn’t seem two minutes since Lauren was swinging in the park and Tom was footballing on the field! Paul & Siobhan Tel: (01352) 810668 Email: news@llanferres.org www.llanferres.org

Thank you to all Gardeners, Bakers, Cooks and Jam Makers! Llanferres Old Peoples’ Welfare Committee would like to say a massive thank you to the Gardening Club for allowing us to have a home produce stall at this year’s show. We were overwhelmed with the quantity of fantastic cakes, scones, pies, crumbles, jams and chutneys that were donated and helped us to raise a whopping £157.25 ! Thank you to everyone who donated goodies to sell and also to everyone who bought from us. We sold every last cake despite some dodgy looking donations from our Committee members following their bake off, As we haven’t heard of any reported

cases of food poisoning, we can only assume they tasted nicer than they looked! The money raised will pay for the starters at this year’s Christmas Lunch for our older residents. We will be bingo-ing in November and Caroling in December to raise enough for mains and pudding! Thank you Old Peoples’ Welfare Committee

Early Motoring in Llanferres At the start of the twentieth century motoring was in its infancy and the local roads were not tarred. Motorcar drivers were keen to find the limitations of their vehicles. At first this was simply a matter of travelling as fast as possible greatly to the annoyance of other road users. In 1906 District Councillor Thomas Jones from Llanferres suggested putting large stones on the main road to slow cars down! Needless to say this suggestion was not adopted. The first conviction for speeding in Llanferres was in 1914 when a Liverpool resident was fined for "recklessly driving" at 35 mph. Soon a more challenging activity was found - hill climbing. The best known route in our area is Trial Hill on the road between Pantymwyn and Cilcain. Another popular route favoured by drivers from Merseyside was up to the Jubilee Tower on Moel Famau. This latter activity was rapidly stopped by the District Council. Closer to home the road between Pont-ymwynwr and Maeshafn provided a suitable challenge as it was narrow, winding, steep and unsurfaced. In 1922 complaints were made to the Parish Council about "the peril and nuisance to the public of Motor Club trials passing Erw Olchfa and up the hill to Maeshafn." This was followed by further complaints that the condition of the lane had deteriorated and was now in a dangerous condition near y Nant where it was mainly surfaced with clay. The first recorded accident involving cars was at the narrow Pont-y-cacwn Bridge on

the main road in 1923. Three cars collided on the Easter Monday forming the first ever parish traffic jam. The next recorded accident at this bridge was in 1927 when two motorcycles collided resulting in the death of one of the riders. This very unfortunate incident was followed by local pressure on the highways authority to have the bridge widened. This was done in the following year. Seven year old Jim Edwards of Tyn y wern has the doubtful distinction of being the first pedestrian to be injured in a traffic accident within the parish. He ran out of the shop at Tafarn y gelyn in 1922 and was knocked down by the Ruthin to Mold bus. Fortunately he was only bruised. We are all aware that parking at Loggerheads is a problem today so it is not surprising to learn that police moved on no fewer than 18 cars that were parked "at dangerous angles in the road" at Loggerheads on Easter Sunday in 1927. Even in those days motorists were fined (at the rate of ÂŁ1) when their unoccupied vehicle caused inconvenience to other road users.

FRIENDS OF THE CLWYDIAN RANGE AND DEE VALLEY We thought you might be interested to know that a new society has been launched, which aims to bring together people who love the countryside of the Clwydian Range and the Upper Dee Valley, a nationally designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). We are lucky to have such stunning landscapes – everything from high heather moorland to rich river valleys (and what a river!) – and we want more and more people to understand and enjoy them, and indeed help us to protect them. We have so many iconic places – Pontcysyllte, Castell Dinas Bran, lots of Iron Age Hillforts, the Eglwyseg escarpment, Gop Hill, Moel Famau with its much loved Jubilee Tower – that we really want to share them with everybody. This Society is called Friends of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley – a cumbersome title, but it reflects our connection to the AONB. We are an independent organisation run by our Trustees. We are hoping to register as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We have set our membership fees low, at £10 per annum (£15 joint/family), to attract as many people as possible, and for that members will receive regular invitations to themed walks to special places in the AONB led by experts, talks about the AONB from interesting speakers, a quarterly electronic Newsletter, a few discounts from local shops, and a welcome pack including a pin badge,

car sticker and even a DVD about the Clwydian Range. As well as enjoying our activities, no doubt some of us will even help out at events throughout the AONB. But most important, we hope residents and visitors will be encouraged to celebrate and discover this special area which now extends all the way from Prestatyn to Corwen. Membership forms are available at Loggerheads, the Loggerheads garage, the Raven, the Druid, Ruthin Craft Centre, Ruthin Library and many other places in Ruthin, Denbigh and Mold. We hope you will think about joining us ? Meanwhile, if you have any queries, please phone Mike Skuse on 01824 702 973(evening) or Helen Mrowiec on 01352 810 614 (daytime). A note from your County Councillor I am pleased to start my report this month with good news. Many of you have expressed concerns about the developments in the Big Covert as new owners of small plots in the woodland have built sheds and cabins. They were all asked to submit full planning applications for these developments and these were refused by the Counties Planning committee. Under planning rules applicants have a right of appeal and I am pleased to report that the Welsh Governments Planning Inspector has dismissed these appeals. This sends a clear message that such developments are unacceptable in the open countryside and our woodlands. I would like to thank all of you who took the time to write to the planning department, the planning committee who supported our concerns and the Counties planning department and the National Trust for their excellent submissions to the Appeals Inspector. At the school governors meeting this week we discussed a number of issues. It was confirmed that the new head Mrs Elizabeth Knight will be joining the school after half term and in the mean time Mrs Janet Wynn will be acting head. Sadly we have once again had reports of children climbing on the school roof. Not only is this highly dangerous but any damage caused by this sort of activity is costly to repair and we the local taxpayers have to foot the bill. If anyone sees children on the roof they should report the incident to the police immediately and the county

will pursue the parents of the children concerned to recover the costs of any damage incurred. I need to reaffirm that there is no right of access via the public footpath from the churchyard across the school playing field. The gate was padlocked to ensure the safety of the children but it appears that someone was not happy with this and they have cut and removed the padlock. In this day and age the safety of our school children must come first and we are asking the council to either remove the gate and replace it with fencing or weld the gate shut. I have been approached by local residents to ask for people's cooperation when parking in Cae Derwen and Tyn Llan. Sadly most of our village roads were not designed for the numbers of cars we all now own. Could I ask people to refrain from parking in the turning area in Cae Derwen as large delivery vehicles are struggling to reverse down the street. Could I also ask that when parents are dropping off children at the school that they do not park opposite people drives. Drop off times in the mornings tend to coincide with local residents going to work and many of them are struggling to get out of their drives. Finally we are still concerned about access to Tyn Llan for emergency services and delivery vehicles because people are parking on both sides of what is a narrow street. Can residents please park in their drives were possible, use the communal parking area by the school or just park on one side of the road. Thanks for your help in this area.

A note from your County Councillor I will be contacting residents in Rectory Lane about how we deal with pot holes and the roads surface in the future after the council once again confirmed that it was unadopted and that they are not responsible for its maintenance. After being contacted by residents in Tafarn y Gelyn I have arranged for the grass verges to be cut and I am pleased to confirm that the bushes and trees will be pruned back from the pavements in the Autumn.

Hello my name is George and I am about 5 years old

From being a tiny kitten I lived in a flat with a lady in London. We spent a lot of time together and I was very content with my life until she could no longer care for me. In March this year I went to live with my new owners - a young couple who love me dearly.

I

I was only used to my lady owner and I found the move from her small flat to a house with more than one person a bit frightening and I hid under the bed for the first 2 weeks. I am an anxious boy but I now sit on my owners knees to be stroked (when it suits me) and I like to sleep on their bed with them and purr loudly. I have been brave enough to venture outside into their small fenced-in back garden and I love it out there watching birds and chasing leaves. I still get scared when my owners have visitors. I am frightened of everyone other than them and this makes me hiss and spit at everyone and run and hide. It takes me days to get over the trauma back under the bed again and I have to learn to be friends with my owners all over again. One of my owners has started a new job and is now out of the house for over 12 hours some days. My other owner does long shifts and on-call. I am on my own far too much now and some days I need feeding by the neighbour. I get lonely and am traumatised when this stranger comes to feed me. My owners love me but they can’t give me what I need and so are looking for a new home for me. I am a very loving but confused little chap who needs to live in a quiet house with patient people who are at home a lot and don’t have too many visitors. In return I will be good company, loving (eventually) and entertaining. I am neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated. I’ve never seen another cat or a dog and I’m petrified of children. Please contact Becky on 07766760209 if you think you could give me a home and love me. Thank you, George xxx
