Unfortunately, both the number of exhibitors and entries in the annual show were significantly lower this year than in previous years. Whilst the poor growing season may account for lower entries in the garden and flower sections, this does not explain the reduction in entries in the home, handicrafts, art, floral art and photography sections. It would be a great shame if the show was to founder after so many years due to a lack of support. I would urge everyone to give some thought throughout the year (when planting up the garden, baking for the family, enjoying hobbies etc) as to what they can enter in the show next year. I would like to thank the school for their huge contribution to the junior art section this year. My thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the Show Ivy Watts, Show Secretary

The Crosville Motor Company Tony King at Loggerheads The Crosville Motor Company was formed in 1906. It expanded rapidly and aggressively by purchasing smaller competitive companies. The company was soon serving north east Wales, the Wirral, Cheshire and Lancashire. One of its innovative ideas was to develop a tourist attraction in north Wales that could be served by its fleet of buses.

though it was owned by the parish council). A wooden framed pavilion was erected to provide refreshments and a location for dances: it could hold up to 200 participants. A bandstand, kiosks, children's play equipment and a putting green were also installed. The venue proved very popular

In 1926 the company purchased several areas of land at Loggerheads in the Colomendy Estate Sale. These included the area now known as the Tea Gardens, the carpark and an area of woodland on the east bank of the River Alyn. The site was quickly developed into a major tourist attraction. The company replaced a dilapidated footbridge across the River Alyn that gave access to the site (even

and in 1928 a Band Contest held in the Tea Gardens attracted some two thousand spectators. In the following year an Eisteddfod was held involving 41 choirs competing in front of an audience of "several thousand spectators". Virtually all of the participants of these events arrived by bus. Many visitors queued late into the night waiting for buses to return home. The success of the Tea Gardens led Crosville to purchase a further 20 acres of woodland on the east bank of the River Alyn for ÂŁ525 in the second Colomendy Estate Sale of 1931. Thus the foundations of the present day Loggerheads Country Park were established. Mr Dean who had purchased the Loggerheads Inn built Park House and installed further attractions for visitors. These included a boating lake, a dining hall extension to the rear of the Inn (to compete with the Crosville Pavilion) and a tower that was to be part of an aerial ropeway for use in a ride but was never completed. The heyday of the Tea Gardens was the 1920s and 1930s. After the second world war custom for the buses decreased as life styles changed. As a result the condition of the property at Loggerheads deteriorated. In 1974 Crosville sold their landholding at Loggerheads, which

included 60 acres of woodland and three acres of carpark and tea gardens, to Clwyd County Council. The County Council had decided to convert it into a Country Park and to improve it from its run-down state. The Council's Planning Brief reported that the pavilion and three kiosks were in very poor condition and that three derelict caravans near the Pentre Mill needed removal. Today the original attractions have all gone. The pavilion burnt down in a fire under "suspicious circumstances" in August 1984 and was replaced by the present buildings. The kiosks and the derelict caravans have been removed. The Country Park has been expanded in area following successive purchases of land by the County Council and now covers an area of about 87 acres.

A note from your County Councillor Although there were no formal council meetings in August my County Council in box was as busy as ever. Issues range from the state of some of our roads, road side hedges that need cutting, rats and the threat of the possible closure of the part time post office in Eryrys. I have been asked to prepare a list of roads that need resurfacing across the ward for next year’s highways budget. I have included the slip road to the Church and Cae Derwen, the road to Bryn Alyn and the roads from Loggerheads and Tafarn Y Gelyn to the Cilcain junction. I have included in total twelve roads across the ward in my report so far and we have to accept that sadly not all of these will be repaired because of budget constraints. In August I had site meetings with DCC officers at Forestry Road to try and once again resolve the problem of surface water on the road and also in Tyn Llan where due to blocked drains we often see water running down Tyn Llan after heavy rain. I hope that we can resolve both issues before the winter sets in and any surface water freezes.

I mentioned the part-time post office in Eryrys and the good news is that it has been saved but it will now open on a Thursday afternoon between 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm. This follows on from the similar service at the Raven Inn in Llanarmon Yn Ial which is open between 12.00 and 2.00pm on a Thursday. Finally as many been chasing BT information from out of Superfast area.

The good news is that Maeshafn will get Fibre Optic cables ( FTTP) to the homes of those people who want the new service and this should happen by the end of the year at the latest. Llanferres is live and residents will get the service from the local cabinet to their homes via the standard copper wires (FTTC). Sadly the bad news is that Tafarn y Gelyn is for some reason not included in the Superfast Broad Band roll out and I will let you have more information about the alternatives as soon as I can. Best wishes, Martyn

I HAVE A DREAM…….. You may have heard through the grapevine or from past News and Views, that I am keen to resurrect The Llanferres Carnival. Much verbal support has been heard, giving me encouragement to attempt to do this, but I cannot do it on my own. I see this as a fantastic community project with every Club, Group and Committee taking over a "pitch" of their choice - a sideshow, guess the whatever, arrange races etc - with all proceeds raised going to their individual Club or charity of their choice. I intend to write several letters of intent asking for key pointers as how to organise funding, insurance and stringent Health and Safety laws. Armed with some information, I am asking anyone who has the slightest interest to meet with me at : THE DRUID INN FRIDAY 28TH OCTOBER 7.30pm From this response and from the information I gather, it will be evident if the dream will come true or not. PLEASE SUPPORT!!

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club At the September Meeting of the Gardening Club members reflected on this year's Show held on 3rd September. Although the show was successful members were disappointed with the very low entries and lower than normal attendance on the day. Discussions took place to ascertain whether it was worth holding a show in the future and it was decided to hold a show next year, but this would be the last unless the situation improved. If you are slightly interested in gardening and nature, please come along to our meetings held on the second Monday of the month. New blood needs to be injected into the club to present new views and ideas. The next meeting will be held on 10th October and our speaker is Iwan Edwards who will be giving a talk on Orchards. Please come along, give it a go. Unless you try you will never know whether this is for you.

Christine Smith, Hon Secretary Llanferres Parish Gardening Club. Tel. No. 01352810516. 07584212950

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ Another keen "bird man" told me about a walk he had along the river and he had seen a kingfisher. I decided to do the same walk and see for myself. There had been a few heavy showers and the woodland smelt all moist and although the garlic had finished flowering the fantastic scent of garlic mixed with other plants and rotting logs with just the sound of birds made it well worth making the effort.

The older ones amongst us will remember "Children's Hour" on BBC radio. There was a nature feature "Romany" who was followed by "Nomad" which I enjoyed and looked forward to each week in the days before television. "Nomad" was the naturalist and writer Norman Ellison who lived on the Wirral and wrote several books in the 1950's. I still have one entitled "The Wirral Peninsular" published in May 1955 I can thoroughly recommend this very I didn't see any kingfishers but I interesting book. spent a pleasant half hour watching a pair of dippers working the river. I was happy to find a few caterpillars of the elephant hawk moth, so named because the huge caterpillar resembles an elephants trunk. The very attractive moth favours the rose bay willow-herb as a food plant to lay it's eggs on. There are two types, the large and the small both pink, green and brown striped.
