Now firmly established as one of the United Kingdom's top historic events, Saturday the 3rd of September sees the sixth running of Clwyd Vale Motor Club's 'Vale of Clwyd Classic'. The event is based at The Druid Inn at Llanferres, with technical and safety inspections taking place on Friday the 2nd of September at Loggerheads Garage between 17:30 and 20:45 followed by documentation checks at The Druid where the cars will be parked up to be viewed. The event is part of a nationwide championship aimed solely at vehicles registered prior to 1983, with many of the vehicles competing from the 1950's or even earlier! The event brings in many competitors from all over the UK and Eire, with the majority of crews staying in the locality during the event, thus it provides a great boost to the local economy. The first car starts from The Druid Inn at Llanferres at 8:15am on the Saturday, the competitors will head into the first driving test at Loggerheads Country Park; where Denbighshire County Council have decided to make spectators more than welcome. The event will then wind its way around the lanes of Flintshire and Denbighshire, taking in many more driving and manoeuvrability tests along the way. The route is a closely guarded secret, as some parts take place on private land through the kind permission of landowners, it is also guarded as the standard of the crews over
the last few years has risen, many competitors are so skilful they only drop a few seconds penalties over the whole event, so everything is done to provide them with a challenge. The course designer, or 'Clerk of The Course', Guy Woodcock, is well known for putting on well received and tricky events, not just here in Wales, but all over the UK and Europe too. Guy said, "It's great to bring so many well-known and respected competitors on the HRCR Championship here to Llanferres, the response we have had since this event started has been nothing short of amazing. We plan to use sections at the beginning and the end of the event close to Llanferres, the first part will head out around Rhosesmor. The Lunch and afternoon tea halt will be at Ruthin Farmers Mart this year where the cars will also do 2 special tests. The final
19 News & Views section from Ruthin comes over Moel Arthur before heading back to the finish at the village. Sixty five or so cars are scheduled to make the start from The Druid on Saturday, the route will take some eight and a bit hours to complete with the first finishing car and crew scheduled to be back around 16:30 back at The Druid for the final results and prize giving Leading the cars away will be last year's winners Matt Warren from Chester who has won 7 out of the 9 rounds so far completed with his Navigator from Yorkshire Andy "The Pup " Pullan and will clinch the championship with a win on the Classic. He will be chased hard by the Porsche 911 driven by 2015 winners Howard Warren (Matt’s father) and Ian Tullie.
Local crews that could spoil the party Peter Welch/Rich Bestwick in a Mk1 Golf GTI and Ken Jones/Charles Hughes in a MGB. With some of the elite contenders taking part, it will be a fantastic battle from the start and as the saying goes - "Not over until the fat lady sings" To see further details and for the final results, visit www.cvmc.org.uk/ ClwydClassic2016.html

Captain Benjamin Williams This is story of a successful mining engineer (or mining Captain). Benjamin Williams was born in 1834 at Rhyd yr Eilin, Llanferres. His parents, Robert and Jane, were farmers and rented about 80 acres of land from the Church. At an early age Benjamin decided not to follow his three brothers into farming. He got a job as a lead miner at the Fron Hall lead mine at Gwernymynydd when he was 15 years old. He showed sufficient promise to be offered a position in charge of the mine pumping operations at the Bromfield Hall Colliery at Mold. He then was appointed under-manager at the famous Cat Hole lead mine; a position he held from 1868 to 1874. It was here that he learnt the skills that led him to be engaged in important tunnelling operations in both Wales and England. At this time he was living with his widowed mother at Ty Uchaf, off Hafod road, Gwernymynydd. In 1874 he was offered a senior post in a project to drive the Festiniog Railway Tunnel under Moel Dyrnogydd in Snowdonia. The local rock was very hard and special rock drills were required for tunnelling. This major project employed 1100 men working shifts day and night at the peak time and cost ÂŁ250,000. The tunnel was completed in 1879 and is 2 miles 206 yards long. It is dead straight and from one end one can see daylight at the other. It is the longest single track railway tunnel in the UK. The success of this difficult task was considered a major achievement at that time and it was to hold him in good stead later. He returned to Ty Uchaf in Gwernymynydd and took charge of the Fron Fawnog and Gwernymynydd lead mines for the next ten years. During this period he married Henrietta Jones, a
farmer's daughter, from the Broncoed district of Mold. Another opportunity arose in 1889: he was appointed as mine agent for the recently formed Glyndwr Mining Company that intended to work the lead mines near the Owain Glyndwr pub. However, almost immediately a far more important job was on offer: managing another tunnelling project. This was a tunnel under the Pennines in Yorkshire between Diggle and Marsden. There were already three parallel tunnels here. The new one was to be of single arch construction carrying two railway tracks. It took four years to construct, was three miles 70 yards in length and was lined with 25 million bricks: it is still in use today. Benjamin then retired to Ty Uchaf in 1895 where he was subsequently described on the 1901 census as "living on his own means". His career had been very successful and he had become well off. He bought two farms in Nercwys in 1898, but we do not know what his intentions for them were. He died at Ty Uchaf in February 1903 and his obituary was published in local newspapers: he was described as "a man of gentlemanly appearance".

We, as a community, have helped out with the Mountain bike marathon over the last 10 years and have received donations for the upkeep and maintenance of our village playing field. I cannot thank you enough for this. Recently new swings and frames have been fitted in the park. Without your time and effort this event would not be able to take place. The organisers for the MTB marathon have been in talks with me over the last few months and had planned to ‘rest’ the Ruthin event this year. However, due to the positive response and feedback from many of the riders about the Ruthin event, they have decided to keep it in the calendar for 2016. This is brilliant news for our community and for the park. In the past the LPFRA have received a donation of £2000 for volunteering our time, a sum I’m not sure we get from any other fundraising event. The SCOTT UK mountain bike marathon - Ruthin will take place on the 10th – 11th September 2016. Please email crc_marshal@hotmail.co.uk Or call 810461. Thanks, Dan Hurst Chairman of the LPFRA

What’s Your View? The Community Council have received a complaint that the tree on the Green in Maeshafn is now too big and should be trimmed. The outcome of an inspection made recently reported the following:
At the moment, while the tree is undoubtedly large, it is not clear if there is a specific concern or danger that needs to be addressed. If there is, then clearly aesthetic issues would take far less importance. If not, then you might well be better to leave it alone for the present.
The tree is of full size. If the concern is that the tree is too tall then in principle the top could be cut out - but of course it will lose its shape. Similarly, while the lower branches could be trimmed back you would be left with bare ends ,which would look anything but pleasing to the eye. This is not the sort of species (unlike Leylandii) which can be trimmed and then regrow the shape.
What would the residents like the Community Council to do? Leave it as it is for one more year? Remove the tree completely? Replace the current tree with a new tree but in a container, to limit its growth? What is your view? Contact your local councillor contact numbers are on page 33

Taking Flight Theatre We were lucky winners of two free tickets for ‘Romeo and Juliet’ put on by Taking Flight Theatre at the very local venue of Loggerheads Country Park on the evening of Sunday 26th June. Sadly there was light rain to begin with but we had been told that the performance would take place whatever the weather. At least we could dress appropriately, but the actors and actresses at times were quite scantily dressed and poor Juliet had to lie on the ground for quite some time after taking the potion. This theatre company includes disabled people; a couple of parts were played by Paul Henshall in a wheelchair and Juliet, played by Stephanie Back is deaf, so that sign language and cleverly done interpretation were used throughout. The ‘stage’ moved around the open area in front of Caffi Florence and made use of various possibilities afforded by the trees. The group is
very talented; there was music and the voice production of all was superb. We took our grandchildren along three years ago to ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, put on by the same Company and which again was very enjoyable, so we knew what to expect. We took light chairs along with us but some people just sat on the seats that are there. Patrick and Daryl Austin

Keeping your Passageway clean! Many residents of Cae Gwyn and the village use the cut through from the bottom of the road to the main road - to get to the church or the pub, or both! In the 20-odd years we have lived here it has never been cared for by the council and despite us doing our best to weed and cut back it has recently become a bit of a mess. Despite a request from myself to be paid a proportion of the council tax for the upkeep of the passageway - which for some reason fell on deaf ears - the situation hasn’t changed.
Today , my regular date with Loose Women on ITV was rudely interrupted by a loud vibrating noise and realising that this was not part of the normal birdsong I looked outside and to my astonishment saw 2 guys from Denbighshire County Council wielding a large strimmer in the passageway! After having a word with the chaps that mow the greens in front of the church and then a few phone calls direct to Denbighshire Council we will no longer have an overgrown passageway in Llanferres at the bottom of Cae Gwyn! In fact when I rang the council they were extremely grateful for bringing it to their attention and sent an email to the right person whilst I was on the phone and asked to be told of any other things they could do, which was a pleasant surprise! If there are other areas of the village that could do with a bit of TLC that we pay council tax to have maintained a simple phone call to the right person may be all that is needed! Yours , Frankie Howard (real name withheld for legal reasons) On Behalf of the Llanferres Clean Passage Way Society.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ I recently visited a cousin on the outskirts of Wrexham. As they look out onto fields with plenty of wild flowers, the conversation soon got around to birds as there were many species to be seen from their lounge picture window.
This spell of very warm weather has brought out the grass snakes which will sun themselves in a quiet spot and slither away unseen if they feel the vibration of a foot fall with the approach of walkers. On the odd occasion when they are caught unaware they will play "dead" and even smell dead. Some years ago I was caught out with this survival trick (only once I might add) when I found a "dead" male grass snake and laid it out and measured it to four foot long, then realised what it was doing so I sat quietly on a log to watch it and after a few minutes the snake came "back to life" and made for cover.
He told me he had seen a Wryneck, feeding on ants in their garden. He was able to get his bird book and study this rare visitor at close quarters. With the characteristic twisting of its neck, hence the name Wryneck. It was busy pecking up ants and their larvae and stayed for over twenty minutes, oblivious to him standing in the window. I would have liked it to return while it was there, as I have For those of us who have a compost seen this secretive and well heap in the garden this is where the camouflaged bird only once and that grass snake may choose to lay it's eggs, was many years ago. which are in a bunch and have a tough skin coating.
