Cyngor y Cymuned -Llanferres From the minutes of the July meeting:Present: Cllr. David Jones (Chair), Cllr. David Twomey, Cllr. Yvonne FodenMcCorry, Cllr. John Almond, Cllr. Rob Arnstrong, Cllr. Jac Armstrong, Cllr. Margaret Davies, the Clerk Mrs Gwyneth Dillon and County Councillor Martyn Holland. 1. Apologies: Cllr. Olive Parry, Cllr. Rob Jones. 2. Declarations of Interest: None declared. 3. Meeting open to the public for ten minutes: Members of the public raised concerns regarding the planning application for Coed Moel Famauapplication no 21/2013/0646. It was considered undesirable because it would increase traffic on a country lane which already had congestion problems especially when coaches were parked on the roadside. It is a natural play area and does not need artificial attractions and some already constructed are not used. It should be left in a natural state. Because of the public interest in this matter and members of the public present, the Chairman, with the approval of Councillors, brought forward the planning applications instead of leaving them to item 14. Planning matters: 21/2013/0646 Proposal: Erection of Play Structure and a Timber Cradle Nest Swing. Location: Coed Moel Famau. The Council opposed this application. Reasons - Urbanisation of a rural area; Objection to the eradication of 100 car parking spaces, which was stated as part of the planning application; No consideration given to controlling the traffic and no infrastructure to support increased traffic; Parking already compromised by coaches parked on the highway; Safety aspects of structure

not covered; Proposals should be more sensitive to an AONB. 21/2013/0797 Proposal: Erection of pitched-roof dormer-style extension at rear and conservatory at side of dwelling. Location: Erw Las, Pant Du Road, Eryrys. The Council proposed to raise no objections. 4. County Councillors report: Councillor Holland reported that he had attended a security event at St Asaph School the children are encouraged to take responsibility for the security of the school and this was having beneficial results. 5. Minutes of the June Meeting: The minutes for the June meeting were signed as a true record. 6. Matters Arising: There were no matters arising. 7. Reports from other meetings: Councillor Margaret Davies had attended the AGM of 'One Voice Wales' where a new Chairman and Vice Chairman were elected and Councillor Davies was elected to represent 'One Voice Wales' on the Joint Advisory Committee of the AONB. She was able to report that there will be no more closures of Post Offices in our area. There were now two types of P.O. - the larger stand alone type and those situated in village shops. It is proposed that the P.O.s in village shops will extend their opening hours to assist the public. The P.O. is to reintroduce banking and in some instances intend to remove the glass panels that separate the public from the P.O. employees. 8. Maintenance in the Community: No matters raised. 9. Risk Assessment: Councillors have inspected the Councils assets and report that they are all safe. 10. Landscape project - Memorial Stone: Mr Noel Hedley is still doing research

Vale of Clwyd Classic Event Saturday 7th September This is the third running of the event and once again it is being organised by local man Guy Woodcock and he will be assisted by experienced officials from Clwyd Vale Motor Club. The Druid Inn, Llanferres, will become the focal point for the event where 75 cars and their crews will assemble before making their way around our local highways and byways. Being a daylight Historic event it is primarily aimed at the older, classic cars that we all remember from our youth and the likes of long forgotten names such as a 1955 Austin A90, 1966 Hillman Imp and a 1959 Triumph TR3A, will be touring round the local lanes trying to maintain a low average speed whilst keeping on the correct route. Also during the day the cars will be attempting special tests on private land where the drivers will be let off the leash and they can stretch the legs of their pride and joy! In fact the very first test will be in the Loggerheads Country Park where these classics will attempt a short test in the car park. The first cars are scheduled to leave the Druid Inn at minute intervals from 8:30am and should be starting the Loggerheads test shortly afterwards. So keep a look out for these cars and marvel at the love and devotion that their owners bestow on them to keep these classics alive. Cars then return to the Druid, after their day’s endeavours, from 16:45 onwards for results and prize giving. For more information about the event and to see the entry list, visit the Clwyd Vale MC website: www.cvmc.org.uk

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE Chocolate Brownies
This recipe is a special request from a resident of Llanferres who is a regular visitor to the café. These brownies are probably our best selling cake. They are very easy to make but are undoubtedly a little wicked. To ring the changes we sometimes add mini marshmallows instead of the nuts. 140g dark chocolate 140g butter 2 eggs 160g castor sugar 40g hazelnuts 40g white chocolate 40g milk chocolate 90g plain flour ½ teaspoon baking powder Melt the butter and dark chocolate, either gently in the microwave or in a heat proof bowl over hot water Remove from heat and cool slightly Add eggs and castor sugar and mix Add remaining ingredients and mix Pour into lined tin 25 x 20 cm Cook at 180C for 35 - 40 mins

Maeshafn Cricket Club What a season we have had this year. As I write this we are third in the league with 3 games to go. There is the possibility that if results go our way we will be promoted into the next division, which would be the best finish we have had in 4 seasons of league cricket. We have beaten Bersham, Llangollen, Castell Alun, Rhewl, Ruthin and Dolgellau. We got slaughtered by Bodedern but our other losses to Corwen and Bethesda have been very close.
Maeshafn have seen a boom in numbers. We have managed to get 11 players out every week (no matches cancelled this year so far for the weather) although this has included a debut for Jason Pugh, aged 13 at Bodedern.
The league are planning to change the set up a little bit and we may find ourselves in a North East league rather than a North Wales league. Some of our players are quite keen on this exciting away trips will include a trip to Our batsmen have batted well this Halkyn or Ruthin rather than Bodedern year, our bowlers have bowled well. Maeshafn Cricket Club sheds, old age and DIY, Aled Jones, Steve Pugh, Tom Hall, Dominic Kearney, Jason Pugh, Pete Gresty (formerly of Llanferres) and myself still retain the connection to Maeshafn. Rhun Jones has not played for a few years and was last seen by a couple of villagers armed with a shotgun and carrying a couple of grouse he had bagged on Nercwys Mountain. He has taken the role of hunter/gatherer very seriously.

A note from your County Councillor Summer has been glorious so far and it looks as if there will be bumper hay and fruit harvests this year. Sadly the County’s Highways department have been a little over enthusiastic this year and they cut many of our grass verges far too early in the season. Last year they came in for a lot of criticism because they left it until September by which time many of our very narrow lanes were impassible. The process should ideally start just before the end of July when most wild flowers have seeded but the Trunk Roads and all junctions should be cut earlier to ensure road safety. I have an apology to make in relation to the LDP. As the new member for our ward on Denbighshire County Council I was led to believe that the only parcels of land to be included in the new LDP were in the village of Llanarmon Yn Ial. It has come as a great surprise to not only myself but also to the Llanferres Community Council to find that land behind the properties on the right as you enter the village from Mold was passed as part of the LDP back in 2010/11. Under the new LDP future Barn Conversions can also only be used for affordable housing which I must admit I do not understand as most barns are expensive to convert and are normally well away from bus routes and village centres where most first time buyers want to live. There is also provision for a small amount of building in hamlets such as Maeshafn, Loggerheads and Tafarn Y Gelyn but again this is restricted to affordable housing. There is a lot going on this year in our ward with events such as the ETAPE road race over the Horseshoe Pass and around the lanes at Llandegla on the 8th September. The Welsh Motor Rally with stages in the Forest at Llandegla for which the date has yet to be confirmed and the Tour of Britain which will pass through Loggerheads and Llanferres on
the 18th September. All of these will be spectator events and should help to support our local economy. Fracking has become the latest concern when it comes to finding ways to overcome our energy supply problems. I understand that before any one can start exploring for these reserves, they have to be granted a licence. To date no such licences have been granted for the Denbighshire area and even if they were granted, the applicants would then have to go through the rigorous planning process. Although parts of the Clwydian Range are made up of shale deposits, it is also part of the designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and I do not therefore believe that we will see any of this type of activity in our area. Sadly whatever type of energy resource we look to in the future there will be a price to pay either on the landscape, in the risks associated with its extraction in the case of gas and oil or in the safety aspects of Nuclear power. Many of you are aware of the plans currently being considered in the planning process for extensive play areas to be constructed in the Forest at Moel Famau by Natural Resources Wales (the old Forestry Commission) which is now a part of Welsh Government. There will be an impact on the roads in the area if they achieve the increase in visitor numbers they are anticipating. With this in mind I would like to hear from residents in the area and I hope to visit many of you over the next few weeks. Finally in Denbighshire we are already planning for next year’s budgets and although Wales did not come off badly in the recently announced spending cuts by Central Government, the signals coming out of the Welsh Government are not good. We could be facing cuts to our budgets from the minimum 2% announced by the Chancellor up to 6% which we feel is the worst case scenario. Anything in excess of 2% would mean cuts to services or higher than normal increases in council tax. Watch this space. Best Wishes. Martyn

You’re probably aware by now that the Tour of Britain will be travelling through Loggerheads and Llanferres on Wednesday 18th September. The estimated time of arrival in Llanferres is around 1.15pm, so bear that in mind if you’re travelling! It should be a spectacular site as they whiz by on their way to Llanberis on the 188km (117 mile) fourth leg of the Tour. The Tour of Britain is the UK's biggest professional bicycle race and a centrepiece of the British sporting calendar as the country's largest free-to-watch live sporting event, attracting over a million spectators to the roadside each September, with many hundreds of thousands more following via television and online around the world. The Tour of Britain starts in Peebles in the Scottish Borders on Sunday September 15, finishing in the centre of London eight days later on Sunday September 22, with live coverage in the UK on ITV4 and British Eurosport. There are 114 riders making up 19 six-man teams. Sir Bradley Wiggins has built his comeback training around two targets: the World Championship time trial and the Tour of Britain, so watch out for him on the 18th. There is much more information on the official website www.thetour.co.uk

Nature Notes Gardeners will have noticed the large number of white butterflies in their gardens this year and will, no doubt, have been concerned about the survival of their cabbages and other brassicae such as cauliflower, kale, sprouts, broccoli etc. And with good reason. But it is important to realise that there are three species and to differentiate between them. The biggest pest is the Large white(Pieris brassicae) followed by the Small white(Pieris rapes) and then there is the Green-veined white(Pieris napi) which confines its feeding to wild brassicae and is, therefore, not a threat to gardeners - in fact it is an allay as it eats many plants which are regarded as weeds. Distinguishing between the species is not difficult as the Large white is easily recognised by its size. The Small white is similar but, obviously, much smaller and the Green-veined, which is about the same size as the Small white, has prominent green markings, which resemble veins, on the underside of the rear wings. The Large white is the most numerous with two, and occasionally three, broods each year. The first emerge from overwintered pupae around May and lay eggs which produce the brood currently flying. Although May was cool and wet the beginning of June was hot and sunny and it is possible that these butterflies had good breeding success but I suspect that the large numbers presently flying are due to continental migrants. This happens most years, but occasionally they arrive in prodigious numbers. In 1911 there were reports of fields in the south-east being white with them
and 2009 also had a big influx. The Small white flies at about the same time but does not usually have many continental migrants. The Greenveined white has a shorter season only emerging in late April and usually disappearing by the end of August. The Large white is the biggest pest and a single female can lay up to 600 eggs, developing into large black and yellow caterpillars which, unfortunately, are distasteful to birds and other predators. However, on the positive side, they are particularly vulnerable to a parasitic ichneumon fly Apanteles glomeratus, which injects its eggs into the young caterpillar where the fly larvae feed on the insides of their host, avoiding the vital organs, until the caterpillar is fully grown when they kill it and break out to pupate in yellow cocoons. It is estimated that this parasite kills 80% of the Large white caterpillars. The Small white is not as fecund as its larger cousin and its green caterpillars are eaten by birds and tend to inhabit the more central parts of the plant. It is also parasitized by the ichneumon fly so, overall, is not usually as bad a pest. People have commented on the large number of 'Chacking' Jackdaws which sweep in of an evening to their night time roosts, in the trees adjacent to the Church. There does seem to be more this year than usual perhaps indicating a good breeding season. One can already discern a diminution in the numbers and it is a sobering thought that by the start of next year's breeding season most of them will be dead, from disease, starvation, cold or old age, and numbers will be Continued over the page‌

Nature Notes back, more or less, to what they were early this year. Records indicate that 30-40% of young Jackdaws die in the first year and that survival in subsequent years is only marginally better. A study into Song thrushes, carried out in 2004, showed that 2% of chicks die each day immediately after leaving the nest. "By the time they reach adulthood the mortality rate will have decreased to about one bird in every hundred dying each week. Thus, most Thrushes (and other birds) that hatch will live for only a few months; only about 20% will survive to breed". It is thought that this example will be broadly typical for most song birds (believe it or not, Jackdaws are considered to be 'song
birds'). In this way the population remains roughly consistent from one year to the next, unless there are mitigating circumstances to upset the balance. John Almond
