Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club Our talk on July 8th about the purpose and use of the Food Banks was thought provoking, and often a visit there opens a door to further necessary help. Members gave generously to a collection for our Local Food Bank. Sadly our outings in July and August had to be cancelled. On Tuesday September 9th we shall hear about the Ambulance Service and its many faces. To hear more about us and our future plans please contact either Betty Cook 01352 810722 or Olive Parry 01352 810294

Thank you to all who supported us, the stall holders, our visitors and those who sent kind donations (especially Mrs Betty Cook who provided us, yet again, with delicious scones for our refreshments). Despite the weather, we enjoyed a most pleasant social morning. Our charities were pleased with their achievements. We made ÂŁ180 for Diabetes Research and Wellness. Thank you again for your continued support.. Rob and Pat Armstrong

Vale of Clwyd Classic Now firmly established as one of the United Kingdom’s top historic events, Saturday the 6th of September sees the fourth running of Clwyd Vale Motor Club’s ‘Vale of Clwyd Classic’. The event is based at The Druid Inn at Llanferres, with technical and safety inspections taking place on Friday the 5th of September at Loggerheads Garage between 17:45 and 20:45. The event is part of a nationwide championship aimed solely at vehicles registered prior to 1983, with many of the vehicles competing from the 1950’s or even earlier! The event brings in many competitors from all over the UK and Eire, with the majority of crews staying in the locality during the event, thus it provides a great boost to the local economy. The first car starts from The Druid Inn at Llanferres at 08:26 on Saturday and

Saturday 6 September the competitors will then head into the first driving test at Loggerheads Country Park, where Denbighshire

Vale of Clwyd Classic County Council have made spectators more than welcome. The event will then wind its way around the lanes of Flintshire and Denbighshire, taking in many more driving and manoeuvrability tests along the way. The route is a closely guarded secret, as some parts take place on private land through the kind permission of landowners. It is also guarded as the standard of the crews over the last few years has risen, many competitors are so skilful they only drop a few seconds penalties over the whole event, so everything is done to provide them with a challenge. The course designer, or ‘Clerk of The Course’ is local man Guy Woodcock, Guy is well known for putting on well received and tricky events, not just here in Wales, but all over the UK and Europe too. Guy said, “It’s great to bring so many well-known and respected competitors on the HRCR Championship here to Llanferres, the response we have had since this event started has been nothing short of amazing. We plan to use sections at the beginning and the end of the event close to Llanferres. The first part will head out around Eryrys and Graigfechan and will end up near to Gwernaffield. The final section comes over Bwlch Penbarras and finishes close to the village, but it may surprise a lot of the competitors so I am keeping quiet about that one!” Seventy or so cars are scheduled to make the start from The Druid on Saturday the 6th September, the route will take some eight and a bit hours to complete with the first finishing car and

crew scheduled to be back around 16:45 at The Druid. Leading the cars away will be last year’s winners Ireland’s Ronnie Griffin and England’s Anthony Preston in an MGB GT from 1966. They will be followed by Championship Leader Steve Entwistle partnered by second placed navigator Bob Hargreaves in their distinctive ‘Orange Box’ Mini. Chasing them hard will be John Ruddock who lies as second placed driver in the Championship. John has Ilkley’s Andy Pullan, who at 19 is setting the rallying world alight with his maturity and skills to currently lead the navigators Championship. Local crews that could spoil the party are Howard Warren/Iain Tullie in a 1965 Porsche 911, Peter Welch/Rich Bestwick in a Triumph Dolomite Sprint, Ken Jones/Charles Hughes in a MGB and Keith Davis/John Youd in another MGB. With some of the elite contenders taking part, it will be a fantastic battle from the start. To see further details and for the final results, visit www.cvmc.org.uk/ ClwydClassic2014.html

Gardening Club News Llanferres Parish Gardening Club JULY On July 14th, 17 members and friends enjoyed their visit to Tan-y-Parc at Llanrhaedr the home of Sandra Edwards. Overcast skies did not dampen our enjoyment of this visit. In her cottage garden many specimen plants were well in flower, particularly her buddleia bushes in purples and white. Neat borders of shrubs and herbaceous plants denote a well-cared for garden by this dedicated owner. We also enjoyed our tea, strawberry and cream scones and cake to round off our visit in such a pleasant area. AUGUST Our meeting in August was, as usual, to make the final arrangements for our Annual Show, which this year will be our 40th, to be held on Saturday, September 6th in the Village Hall, opening at 2pm. Our work begins on Friday 5th evening when we set up tables and make everything ready for the Show. Various tasks were allocated to members for the day. Entries to be received by 6pm on Wednesday 3rd September. Exhibits must be in place between 8am and 10.30am at which time the judges will begin judging. Trophies will be presented at 2.30pm by our County Councillor, Martyn Holland. See centre pages for more details. Also there will be the auction of produce at 4pm with the proceeds to be given to the OAP Welfare fund.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Due to an oversight, the Village Hall has been double booked for 15th September for both the Garden Club and the Whist Drive. We at the Garden Club cannot move our meeting as a speaker had been booked for that evening so we have been forced to cancel the meeting. We had hoped that the Whist meeting could have been moved to the 8th September but due to the intransigence of Mr Armstrong this has proved impossible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to the Garden Club members but we have no other option than to cancel the meeting. John Almond, Chairman of Garden Club, and Joan Almond, Secretary

Local News Soon to be new Rectory Lane residents Charlotte, Scott, 2yr old Luca and recently born (June) Lois will be moving onto Plot 1 (Adjacent to the cemetery). Charlotte, originally from Pantymwyn and Scott, originally from Connah's Quay, have been away from the area for over 20 years and are looking forward to moving back nearer their friends and family, setting up their new family home and integrating into the village, being able to ride their mtb bikes out of the front door!! and in Scott's case, only having to walk about 50 steps to the pub! Dave and Jayne, along with a small dog called Pearl, who will be moving onto plot 2 (the Northern plot) have two children at university. Dave has been based in Wrexham for the past few years and Jayne works at Kimberley Clark in Flint. Jayne’s family (the Robert’s) were originally from Gresford and both are looking forward to moving to the village, joining in with local life and being part of the community. Although having never met prior, Dave & Scott were introduced during the land purchase process and have since been working together on their build and timing plans. The builds are due to commence on/around the 24th June. During the 1st week of the build, there will be quite a lot of earth to move so Rectory Lane will be quite busy - they apologise in advance and will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum! Both are targeting Jan 2015 as a completion date. In the meantime, if anybody in the village would like to know more information or have any concerns during the build then please drop us a line on: Scott: 07929 353586 Dave: 07791 719288 Or even better, come and say hello! A note from your County Councillor Summer has been and gone judging by the drop in temperatures and the heavy rain outside as I write this article for the News and Views.

so please help all concerned by keeping them clear.

As your county councillor can I congratulate Adrian Walls on his recent success in the by election for the vacancy on the Llanferres Community Council. I look forward to working with him and the rest of the council for the remainder of the term of this council.

Once a vacancy has been notified to the counties returning officer the councils clerk advertises a casual vacancy. To call an election the returning officer must receive ten or more requests from registered electors, either as individual letters or in the form of a petition. If the designated number of requests are not received by the closing date the matter is passed back to the relevant council to co opt a local resident to fill the position. Normally they would ask for interested parties to declare that they would like to be considered and if more than one party does this then the council would select a candidate by either interview, CV or local knowledge. If they were not happy with any of the candidates they can go back and try again. Once a co option is agreed it must be published locally.

A number of people have contacted me about the recent by election for the community council and expressed concerns about the costs involved. It may help if I clarify what the procedures are for a My mother is over visiting the family from vacancy on either a community or county Florida and she was happy to leave the 90 council. degree heat at home for what was a very warm start here in early August. I know that it is difficult to park all cars these days on your own property but please bear in mind that turning areas are for just that purpose and

A note from your County Councillor If an election is called a new deadline is set for the close of nominations and as long as two or more candidates file their papers by that date an election is called and a campaign can begin. If there is only one candidate at the close of nominations that candidate is automatically elected.

I hope that you all enjoy the remainder of the summer and that I may see you at the village garden show on the 6th September.

Sadly democracy does not come cheaply and the more electors there are in a ward the higher the cost. Costs include the posting of polling cards and postal vote forms, stationery and printing, the hiring of polling stations, the salaries of the polling clerks and the office costs of the returning officer at county hall.

Clwydian Range Runners

All costs have to be met by the council who have declared the vacancy. I hope this helps to explain how the process works and how the costs are incurred. As Budgets get tighter I am pleased to confirm that I have managed to get a number of roads in the ward included in the resurfacing budget for this year and I have chased a number that should have been completed last year!! Major resurfacing works will begin in September in Eryrys from the county boundary to the village centre, in Graianrhyd past the Maes Y Droell Quarry to the junction with the B5430, in Llandegla village and on the A5104 from Rhydtalog to Llandegla. Work will be done on the back road from Llanferres to Moel Famau but I fear that due to a change in policy across the county towards minor roads in rural areas this may be not the full resurfacing that we had hopped for. I am still on the case and I will let you know more in due course.

Best wishes, Martyn

Local News Llanferres Park has once again been awarded the The Green Flag Community Award® in 2014. It is a national award that recognises high quality green spaces in the UK that are managed by voluntary and community groups. The Award is part of the Green Flag Award® scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces. The scheme realises that all green spaces are different so each site is judged on its own merits and suitability to the community it serves. Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Community Award status. The inspector commented on the quality of the park and said that it was the ‘nicest park he had seen for for many years’. Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: 'It's another record-breaking year for the scheme. This is something well worth celebrating and testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, supported by some amazing volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.

Beautiful but Deadly Himalayan Balsam is an insidious, invasive, foreign and fast growing menace to agricultural land, river banks and the countryside in general. If left unchecked it can, in only a few years, take over vast areas of land, smothering all other plants, making the land unproductive and liable to soil erosion when the winter rains arrive. It is a national problem. It is a huge problem in the Conway Valley, I have seen it in Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Merseyside and recently I observed large swathes on the side of the M6 near Preston. On tele-

vision it is often observed growing on the likes of canal banks and in wetland centres yet the managers of these places seem to be doing nothing to control it. Here in Llanferres a voluntary group was set up about six years ago to tackle the problem which was bad on the Cacwyn Brook and

the River Alyn ( the group is now part of the River Alyn Himalayan Balsam Action Project). Weekend working parties were organised to hand pull the Himalayan Balsam plants and, where infestation was very bad, to strim them down. The group was very successful and the control was excellent and it looked as though the problem had been almost eliminated. However, complacency is not an option because it only takes one or two plants to be allowed to flower and the problem quickly returns. They can be missed if growing in a nettle patch or a pile of brushwood and, out of sight, they can throw their seeds up to 7 metres in every direction and each plant can produce up to 800 seeds. Unfortunately this has happened in just one or two places. Some people say that bees love them and this is undoubtedly true but, when the bees are feasting on the easily accessible pollen and nectar, they are not pollinating our native wild species or our food crops. The original group set up to control Himalayan Balsam in our area has unfortunately reduced in numbers and some of us are getting a bit ‘long in the tooth’ so can I ask any member of the public or any landowner to destroy any plants they see, so all the original work will not be in vain. THANK YOU.

A Local Swindle From time immemorial men known as “Adventurers” have sought to make their fortune by mining minerals. Many of these adventurers are best described as being “colourful”. This article is about one such person. In about 1850 a private company started mining for lead ore on Nercwys Mountain close to the borders of Llanarmon yn Ial and Llanferres. The leader of this enterprise was one Samuel Merryweather from Wigtown, Cumbria who had a controlling interest of 33/64ths. He had previously been a traveller to a wholesale grocer in Liverpool and was now best described as a mining speculator as he also had mining interests in Cumbria. Starting up a new mine can be an expensive undertaking and the

company soon ran out of resources. So they decided to form a new public company with a nominal capital of £30,000 to be raised from the issue of six thousand £5 shares. The intention was for the new company to buy the mine for £7,000 (£4,000 in cash and £3,000 in fully paid up shares of the new company). Henry Whitworth and Company of Manchester was to provide the mine management. The prospectus claimed that “large quantities of ore” had already been raised from the mine. However, the launch of the company did not go well and only part of the purchase price was raised. The chairman of the new company smelt a rat and engaged a mining engineer to examine the mine workings. He reported that the mine was worthless and would require at

News & Views 33 An article by Tony King, originally published by The Llanarmon and District Conservation Society in their newsletter & reproduced with their permission least £10,000 of investment to be productive. Some of the shareholders decided that a fraud had been perpetrated and filed a suit in the Court of Chancery in the name of the company against Samuel Merryweather and his supporters. This suit was dismissed as it had been improperly filed as no resolution had been passed by the shareholders authorising the suit. {In legal jargon the relevant company law at that time was “the rule in Foss v. Harbottle”. This states that any action in which a wrong is alleged to have been done to a company, the proper claimant is the company itself.} Immediately, David Atwool, one of the shareholders, filed a suit in the Court of Chancery against the company, Samuel Merryweather and his supporters. Several years passed before this was heard but in the meantime he successfully petitioned for the company to be declared bankrupt thus freezing the company assets. From the proceedings of the new case we learn that Merryweather knew that the mine was worthless but he was determined to get £4,000 for his share of the original company. He therefore colluded with Henry Whitworth, who had no previous interest in the mine, and sought his help in the sale. It was arranged between them that Merryweather would receive £4,000 of the £7,000 and Whitworth the remaining £3,000. Merryweather and Whitworth concealed these facts from the other directors and induced them to buy the mine. In other words a straight forward fraud. But how could this be remedied? As Merryweather, Whitworth and their supporters held a controlling interest in the company they were able to prevent an action being brought under the rule in Fosse v. Harbottle. Vice Chancellor Wood decided that an exception had to be made to this rule in order to protect minority interests. This important exception is now known as “frauds against a minority” and is still quoted in legal actions today. The Court also ruled that the sale of the original company was to be set aside, all the purchase money was to be refunded and Merryweather and Whitworth were to pay all the legal costs. This was the last that we heard of Samuel Merryweather in this area. But I understand that he continued to sail close to the wind in his activities elsewhere in England.

‘Deja New’ Meningitis Fund Raising Eve Williams of Gwernymynydd with the help of family and friends is holding a ladies’ clothing and accessory sale called ‘Déjà New’. The event takes place at the Beaufort Park Hotel on the 17 & 18 of October 2014. Every penny raised will go to Meningitis Now the charity founded by Steve Dayman MBE who launched it to fight against the dreaded disease after losing his baby Spencer to Meningitis in 1982. On Christmas Eve 2012 Eve’s granddaughter lost her life to this awful disease aged just 13 months. Freya who lived in Gwernymynydd was a vibrant and wonderful little girl who is cherished and never forgotten.

We are looking for good fashion labels and designer labels. If you have items you have never worn, or only once or twice and no longer want then Déjà New would love to have them. Maybe something that is too small or too big, or just be an item that you don’t feel right in anymore. We all have something in our wardrobes or drawers that fit these descriptions.“The main thing is that everything must be in good condition” says Eve. Donations can be dropped off at the Beaufort Park Hotel near Mold and are being accepted now. Tel 01352 758646. Eve Williams

Eve says “Meningitis Now helped me through the tragedy and I am determined to support the charity in raising money for research and ensuring such a tragedy does not affect another family like it has ours.” A lifesaving vaccine to protect against one of the most deadly forms of Meningitis Group B may soon be available for free on the NHS .The Government has announced that the revolutionary Bexsero vaccine will be in the childhood immunisation programme but only if a price can be agreed to make it cost-effective for the NHS. In order for Meningitis Now to continue the fight they desperately need funds and the Déjà New Clothing sale aims to raise money. Donations are needed please - all items of ladies clothing and accessories.

Nature Notes At this time of year we often see Harvestmen scuttling about and it is easy to misidentify them as spiders or 'Daddy-long-legs(Crane flies) but they are neither. They are not insects (as Crane flies are) but are of the Class arachnida(along with spiders) but belong to the Order Opiliones. They are totally harmless and are beneficial to humans. While spiders have their abdomen separated from the thorax by a waist, the harvestmen's body is undivided. They have four pairs of very long legs of which the 2nd pair are the longest and act as 'feelers', rather like antennae do, and enable the animal to find its way about. They only have two eyes compared with spiders which have six to eight. They cannot bite people, do not produce venom like spiders, do not produce silk, do not hunt but scavenge and feed on particles of food, not sucking juices as spiders do. They reproduce by laying eggs, from which hatch tiny harvestmen that gradually grow to adulthood, they do not have a larval or pupal stage. They are known as Harvestmen because most species, of which there are over twenty in Britain, come to maturity in late summer or early autumn, at time of harvesting. When some volunteers from the Himalayan Balsam group were searching along the River Alyn for specimens of the insidious weed (see separate article, page 30) they heard the sound of chicks calling from a hole in the river bank and I was asked could I explain. I said it would be either be a Kingfisher or a Sand martin nest but I would investigate. Following the given instructions I

found the site and I could hear the sound of nestlings therein. Having secreted myself nearby, I waited and soon afterwards a parent arrived to enter the nest and within half a minute re-emerged and sure enough it was a Sand martin. I have seen them near the river over the years and suspected breeding but this was the first time I have been able to positively confirm it. The nest was unusual on several counts i) it was a single nest and Sand martins usually nest in colonies, ii) it was in a clay bank which one would have thought would be too hard for Sand martins which prefer sandy banks, iii) the hole did not go straight in but, after only a few centimetres, it turned by 90 degrees, probably because the birds had encountered a stone. These nest burrows can sometimes be as much as a metre in length. The Sand martin is the smallest of our Hirundines, which comprise the Swallows and Martins, but not Swifts which belong to a separate group. They can be separated from the more familiar House martins in being brown in colour, have a brown band across the chest but do not have the distinctive white rump. They are one of the earliest spring migrants, often arriving in Britain by mid-March. They overwinter in the Sahel a semiarid area just south of the Sahara Desert where they sometimes suffer severe losses in particularly dry years and this affects the numbers coming to Britain. Once here, they usually have two broods of chicks and the one in this hole will be the second brood. They leave for Africa round midSeptember. John Almond ( 01352 810808
