Welcome Welcome to the September edition. As we go to print the forecast is for a warm and sunny bank holiday weekend - happy days! That's great news for all those who are tenderly nurturing flowers and veggies for the Garden Show on Saturday 2nd Sept. Please do make an extra special effort to make sure this year's show has lots of exhibits and attendees or it may well be the last, which would be terribly sad. There is still time to get your entry form in. Deadline is 6pm Wednesday 30th August (see page 28). We are lucky to once again have the Vale of Clwyd Classic car rally starting and finishing in the village. Be at the Druid from 8.15am on Saturday 2nd Sept to see the cars setting off (see page 18). A very big thank you to Guy Woodcock for sponsoring this edition of News & Views. Don't forget 'Race Night - Ascot Style' on Friday 15th September at the
Druid which is a vital fundraiser for the 2018 Village Carnival. A great fun night out with a chance to win prizes and cash (see page 13). Make sure you don’t miss the deadline of Sunday 3rd Sept to book your place on the Theatre trip which is planned for November ( see page 12). Finally a HUGE thank you to Charlotte Jaggard who entered a competition to win a defibrillator. She was successful and we can now look forward to having one of these potentially life saving devices in the village. What a great bit of initiative and a cracking result. See page 11. Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club Our July meeting "Naughty but Nice" proved to be just that! June Conner collects Victorian underwear which she launders beautifully (no care labels then!) and talks about each piece. Many of the pieces carried the owners' names and the date of ownership. We had no meeting in August and look forward to 11th September when we visit the Oswestry Sculpture Park and take a boat ride on the river at Shrewsbury. Why not join us at 2.00pm on 10th October when one of our member's Marfydd Shawcross will talk about her life.

LLANFERRES PARISH GARDENING CLUB On July 10th a group of members visited Pen y Graig in Treimeichion. This NGS garden is only open to private visits because of its position up a narrow road approach with limited parking. This garden is the passion of Roger Pawling and Christine Hoyle. At 560 ft above sea-level, with grass and gravel paths between box hedges, it is divided into separate gardens, with flowering plants, shrubs, fruit trees and vegetables. There are wildlife ponds too. It has three paddocks grown with wild flowers and for a hay harvest. Many trees are native varieties with the special quality of flowers, fruit or foliage which change according to the season. After 14 year of very hard work and dedication, this garden was full of colour especially when we looked across it from the house to the horizon. Although the evening was overcast, after a showery day, we had an enjoyable evening listening to Roger and Christine's stories of all their hard work and tribulations in planting this - "Their Garden". After tea and cake we made our way home with memories of another NGS garden to add to our list. Our ANNUAL SHOW will be held on Saturday SEPTEMBER 2nd at 2pm in the Village Hall when we hope to see you all and please enter as many classes as you can. Hon Secretary Mrs Joan Almond
August Meeting The August meeting was, as usual, devoted to the final arrangements for our Annual Show, the 43rd, to be held on Saturday 2 September at 2.00 pm in the Village Hall. Exhibitors are reminded that entries must be received by 6.00 pm Wednesday 30 August and exhibits must be staged between 8.00 and 10.30 am on 2 September, judging will commence at 10.30 am. Trophies will be presented at 2.30 pm by Rev. Daniel Stroud and there will be an auction of produce at 4.00 pm (proceeds to the OAP Welfare Fund). See centre pages for more details.

POTENTIALLY LIFE SAVING LOCAL NEWS
It was with great excitement that I learnt that this photo of our village hall has won us a defibrillator through the Arrhythmia Alliance ‘Does your polling station have a defibrillator?’ Competition as part of World Heart Rhythm Week. It will be arriving soon and will be installed on the outside wall at the Village Hall entrance, once we have a heated cabinet for it and someone to install it. This is great news for the community. There have been campaigns to get defibrillators into all schools, and into rural locations. Around 100 000 people die every year from Sudden Cardiac Arrest, but with quick access to a defibrillator, when used alongside
CPR the survival rate is around 50%. Using a defibrillator needs no training and can be used by anyone. However Chris West from LifeLine FirstAid Training (facebook.com/lifelinetrain1) has kindly offered to provide a free life support training session on Saturday 23rd September from 9.30am to 12 o’clock. These sessions usually cost around £25 per person. A small donation may be required from everyone attending to cover travel costs. There are only 15 places so please can people let me know if they would like to reserve a slot by emailing me on chill_rids@yahoo.co.uk Charlotte Jaggard

SHORT UPDATE ON CARNIVAL PLANNING Several roads of enquiry are being undertaken and are on-going. As there was no interest in my quest for a Carnival Queen, the idea has been expanded and we will think outside of the box!! Thanks to those groups/clubs who have pledged support by means of providing a stall in the hired marquee. I will now invite outside quality stall holders to join us. I am also sourcing side-show entertainment e.g. Tin Can Alley, Coconut Shy, Inflatable Slide, Swing Boats etc. As I have said before, the intention is to have a fun day with as much free entertainment as possible (particularly for children)!! Obviously this will be quite costly to pull off. Hence our major fund-raising event next month!!
Fun Race Night - Ascot Style!!! DRUID INN, FRIDAY 15th SEPTEMBER 2017, 7PM SHARP!! (See advert on page 13 For details) Please please support the many people who have agreed to sponsor a race (and provide the prize) and need YOU to buy a horse hopefully a winner!! We will also be pre-selling raffle tickets for a superb CHAMPAGNE HAMPER (generously provided by Cath Skates) Hope to see you all on Friday 15th - I BET it’ll be a great night!! Thanks for your continued support. P.S. I would just like to join the hundreds of well wishers in thanking Paul and Shiv for their outstanding effort over the last 8 years in producing the monthly News and Views magazine. This much-loved and eagerly awaited publication has provided not only news and views but has become a life line to many in the community, it being a mine of useful information. Their hugely successful themed Quiz nights to raise funding were great fun, much enjoyed and well attended - all thanks to their sole efforts!! Huge thanks for support with the Carnival 2018 - your expertise and know- how has proved invaluable - I hope l'll still be able to tap into it!! So huge thanks are sent with best wishes for the future.

50 Now firmly established as one of the United Kingdom’s top historic events, Saturday the 2nd of September sees the seventh running of Clwyd Vale Motor Club’s ‘Vale of Clwyd Classic’. The event is based at The Druid Inn at Llanferres, with technical and safety inspections taking place on Friday the 2nd of September at Loggerheads Garage between 17:00 and 20:30 followed by documentation checks at The Druid, where the cars will be parked up be viewed. The event is part of a nationwide championship aimed solely at vehicles registered prior to 1983, with many of the vehicles competing from the 1950’s The event brings in many competitors from all over the UK and Eire, with the majority of crews staying in the locality during the event, thus it provides a great boost to the local economy. The first car starts from The Druid Inn at Llanferres at 8:15am on the Saturday. The competitors will head into the first driving test at Loggerheads Country Park; where Denbighshire County Council have decided to make spectators more than welcome. The event will then wind its way around the lanes of Flintshire and Denbighshire, taking in many more driving and manoeuvrability tests along the way. The route is a closely guarded secret, as some parts take place on private land through the kind permission of landowners. It is also guarded as the standard of the crews
Last year’s winner Matt Warren over the last few years has risen, many competitors are so skilful they only drop a few seconds penalties over the whole event, so everything is done to provide them with a challenge. The course designer, or ‘Clerk of The Course’, Guy Woodcock, is well known for putting on well received and tricky events, not just here in Wales, but all over the UK and Europe too. Guy said, “It’s great to bring so many well-known and respected competitors on the HRCR Championship here to Llanferres. The response we have had since this event started has been nothing short of amazing. We plan to use sections at the beginning of the event close to Llanferres with the first part heading out around Eryrys. The lunch and afternoon tea halt will be at Ruthin Farmers Mart this year, where the cars will also do 2 special tests. Again spectators are welcome from 12 noon. The final section, around Nannerch, will then see the cars return to the village for the prize giving.”

Sixty cars are scheduled to make the start from The Druid on Saturday, the route will take some eight and a bit hours to complete with the first finishing car and crew scheduled to be back around 17:00 at The Druid Leading the cars away will be last year’s winners Matt Warren from Chester, with his Navigator from Yorkshire Andy Pullan. This year’s championship is the most open for years with lots of the top crews vying for a good result. Matt will be chased hard by the Porsche 911 driven by 2015 winners Howard Warren (Matt,s father) and Ian Tullie plus a number of other crews. This year we have a car entered that competed in the London to Mexico rally in 1970 and the Austin Maxi (yes an Austin Maxi), known as “Puff the Magic Wagon”, will be in the hands of one of the original drivers Bron Burrell, navigated this time by Suzanne Barker.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ Recently my wife Jean was doing a bit of gardening and dead-heading some of the flowers on our walls. When she called me saying, she had found a large group of spiders sunning themselves on the side of our house. I estimated there were between sixty and seventy, impossible to be accurate because of all the legs being entangled, they covered an area about the size of a desert plate.
The most obvious difference between spiders and harvestmen is that the harvestman's body consists of a single pea~like unit, whereas the spider's body is divided into two parts. It can lose one, sometimes two of it's spindly legs to a predator and manage perfectly without them.
They are well protected by pungent secretions emitted by glands which will deter ants and spiders, but are still Commonly known as daddy-longlegs taken by frogs and birds. I recognized them as harvestmen, although they share an eight-legged The female, which is larger than the body form, they are not spiders at all, male will lay her eggs in the soil in this is where the similarity ends. The name harvestman, comes from the fact that they are most commonly seen after the harvest has been taken in, walking through the stubble or on bare ground when everything has been raked up Being carnivorous, they eat a lot of flies and other insects, including other harvestmen and small slugs, by trapping them in their long spindly legs and drawing them towards their mouth parts.

Lead mining at Maeshafn If you walk on the path through Cascade Wood you cannot help but notice the substantial stone buildings, mainly derelict, on the other side of the River Alyn; the most complete is the Grade 2 listed bridge, the biggest, the Grosvenor pump house ( which is not the one shown in the bus stop photograph on the main road, but similar.) This was a lead mine and associated works. Maeshafn was built for miners and this was one of the important sites. It worked from the early 17th century or possibly earlier until the early twentieth century and there were three phases: from the beginning until about 1800, about 200 tonnes of lead per year were recovered from shafts above the water level; after that for about sixty years there were small quantities, sometimes only 2 tonnes per year, which was probably individuals taking gleanings from existing workings; in 1858 the Grosvenor family installed water pumping machinery and other industrial equipment so that towards 1000 tonnes per year were taken out from shafts driven below the water table. Lead ore, called galena or lead glance which is black and crystalline, was taken out mixed with calcite, clear or cream
crystalline and limestone, grey non crystalline. There was a crushing process in which the mixture would have been reduced to the texture of granulated sugar ( there is a heavy stone block left on site which would have been housed in an iron crusher.) The whole lot was mixed with water in a flotation tank. Pine oil was mixed in. This has an affinity for the galena, which sticks to it and floats, being then raked off. After drying, the galena was carted off to Mold where there were smelting furnaces in the area along the River Alyn now called Leadmills. The cart track going up the field can clearly be seen, which comes to the lane just past Pont y Mwynwyr. The separated stone, known as dross, had to be disposed of. On both sides of the river it can be seen that the natural contours have been filled in with large quantities of dross. The residual lead salts are toxic to plant life so in one hundred years little vegetation has grown, especially on the Maeshafn side, which was filled last. However mosses have established, and in another hundred years it will be greening over nicely. Galena contains, in addition to lead sulphide, other elements, zinc, antimony, arsenic cadmium, iron, copper, bismuth, selenium, silver and even perhaps gold. Sale of

Lead mining at Maeshafn these are reckoned in mining economics to pay for the high recovery costs, but gold is a bonus! Gold was mined four miles away at Cilcain, so might have been found. This helps to keep the cost of lead down. It is a utilitarian product, necessary for sealing houses against water, water pipes in the past, paints, car batteries, radioactive shielding and many miscellaneous uses. In the early twentieth century galena crystals were used in early radios as current rectifiers and further back were ground up for black eyeliner ( NOT RECOMMENDED! ) Our mine was exhausted by 1903 but there are many active around the world. In time though, they will all be played out, which emphasises the importance of recycling, since it will then be the only source of this essential metal.
Silversmiths in Chester were shareholders in the smelting furnaces in their own interest. In the Grosvenor museum in Chester there is a silver room. A large case displays the beautiful products of the workshop of Richard Richardson, a major shareholder at Mold. When you see them, reflect that some of the silver came from below ground at Maeshafn. Lead mining was difficult work and dangerous, but provided employment for dozens of men. The Miners Arms at Maeshafn is where the miners were paid, and no doubt slaked their thirst after a day's work. We have a debt of gratitude to them for taking this useful metal from the ground under conditions of great hardship. John Foxlee
