Community Council News - July Meeting From the minutes of the July meeting:Eight councillors were present, Councillor Jac Armstrong sent his apologies. There were no declarations of interest. Meeting open to the public for ten minutes:- It was reported that there were three named persons who were trained to operate the grass mower in Maeshafn and a letter would be sent confirming that only those persons should be allowed to use the mower for safety reasons. Report of County Councillor Martyn Holland:- Councillor Holland reported that he had had a busy week with debate on the LDP still ongoing. The inspector thought that not sufficient land had been allocated to meet the projected demand for housing and that sites, not originally allocated, would need to be re-considered, including land in Llanferres. Councillor Holland and two Llanferres Community Councillors had attended the Bus Forum and reported that it had been a constructive meeting. Cuts to the bus budget, originally reported to be 27%, will now only be 10% which will mean the projected loss of one bus, from Ruthin to Mold through Llanferes, from next April but this would be the bus least used. The school budget will be increased because pupil numbers have increased. The Police have reported that there have been a number of break-ins in the villages in our ward and also car break-ins, including on Moel Famau. Residents are reminded to be vigilant, lock up valuables and equipment and not leave anything visible in cars. Bus stop in Maeshafn:- Councillors have inspected the sites and Councillor Holland is to consult with residents to
hear their views. No decision has been reached and recent rumours have no foundation. The minutes of the June meeting were signed as a true record. There were to be six training sessions for Community Councillors on the 'Code of Conduct' but no dates were as yet available. Work is progressing, slowly, on the landscaping of the Memorial Stone. Two Community Councillors had attended the AGM of 'One Voice Wales' at Pentrefoelas when a new Chairman and other officers were elected. There then followed a constructive meeting with reports from the National Executive, and the Stakeholder Reference Group - Betsi Cadwaladr University Health board. It was proposed to hold Induction Training Sessions for new Councillors and future training for Chairs and Vice chairs was suggested. It was agreed that the current bill for Welsh Water of ÂŁ17.22 (and subsequent bills) will be paid by direct debit. PLANNING MATTERS:21/2012/0721 Proposal: Erection of conservatory at rear of dwelling. Location: Maes-yGarnedd Llanferres. The Community Council resolved to pass no comment. 21/2012/0720 Proposal: Demolition of existing pump station, construction of a new storm tank/pumping station & associated plant & machinery, new control kiosk, new access gate & new internal concrete site access road. The community Council resolved to pass no comment. Certificates of Decision. 21/2012/0501 Proposal: Erection of single-storey pitched-roof extension at rear of dwelling and erection of detached garage and store at front of dwelling

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club On July 9th we went on another garden trip, this time to Park Cottage, Penley. Dr and Mrs Sime had built this five acre garden, from what had been pasture fields, in 13 years. With several different style of garden areas well planted with over 3,000 species it was indeed special. Members were delighted at such variation of plants giving them many ideas for their own gardens. Our thanks to Dr and Mrs Sime for their time showing us around. Our August meeting was to arrange details of the Annual Show which will be held on September 1st. Finer details of the show were agreed and tasks allocated amongst members, to make sure all is well organised. Show Secretary, David Jones, had all the necessary basic details to hand which made this meeting run smoothly. Show Secretary Mr David Jones ( 810 511

Baking enthusiasts are being called upon to enter their homemade Welsh cakes in a competition at this year’s Mold Food and Drink Festival . The Best of Welsh Bake-off competition, which is for non-professional bakers only, is organised by the festival in conjunction with the Mold WI and first launched last year. It proved highly successful with over 60 entries of bara brith received from a cross-section of the local and wider community. The competition is open to anyone who enjoys home baking and, in particular, has a special recipe or method for making scrumptious Welsh cakes. Entry form and details on www.moldfoodfestival.co.uk

A note from your County Councillor Summer has arrived although it will still go down as one of the wettest on record. Sadly this has not stopped the criminal fraternity and we have had a number of break-ins in the area. Once again we need to be good neighbours and report anything that looks suspicious to the North Wales Police. With this in mind North Wales Police have recently launched a new on line watch link call OWL. By registering your name, location and e- mail address you will receive relevant crime alerts and timely crime prevention advice. I have asked for a thousand of these leaflets and over the next two months I will drop one through each door in the area. Are you in receipt of a state pension, liable to pay council tax in Denbighshire and your home in Denbighshire is your main residence? If you have answered yes to all three questions you may be entitled to a share of a grant received by Denbighshire from the Welsh Government to help reduce pensioners council tax bills. Denbighshire has received ÂŁ148,209 and this will be divided equally between all those who register an interest by November 1st this year. To register you should write to: The Pensioner Grant Scheme, Revenues Dept, Russell House, Churton Road, Rhyl, Denbighshire LL18 3DP quoting your state pension reference number, your address including post code and your council tax reference number. Central Government gave all English Counties enough money to freeze council tax for all tax payers this year and similar funding was given to the Welsh
Government but they decided not to pass it on. It appears that this may be part of that funding and sadly it also appears that it may be more of a lottery in Wales as to wether or not you receive any money. It is therefore important that you register early. There have been a number of complaints about the bus service in Maeshafn from bus users outside the village. The complaints revolve around the problems the buses have in turning around in the village. I feel that this is also an issue about the limited parking in the village for visitors and residents alike. In early September it is my intention to complete a survey in the village to listen to the views of all concerned and to look for possible solutions. I hope that everyone will take part and I am looking forward to your suggestions on how we can improve the position for all. Best wishes. Martyn Cllr Martyn L Holland. THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFOD DENBIGH 2013 The National Eisteddfod fund raising committee have asked Llanferres Community Council to pledge ÂŁ2,000 towards next year's event in Denbigh. It was decided that we would like to support them, but the amount was thought to be excessive and could not just be paid out of Public money. Four members of the Council have therefore joined with some other interested people to form a "Working Party" to try to raise some funds for them. We need more help and would very much like to hear from anyone living in the Community of Llanferres who is willing to help. Nature Notes On a sunny morning in late June I was walking from Llanferres to Loggerheads Garage when I was struck by the beauty and diversity of the plant life encountered on this short walk. I did not do an intensive survey of all the plants, but passed along at a normal walking pace, yet I counted 18 woody plants or trees, of which 5 were in bloom, 6 species of grass and no less than 60 flowering plants (although not all were actually in bloom) and all on the one side of the road (the left-hand side, going towards Loggerheads). I did not use the old road through Tafarn y Gelyn but walked along the pavement until I came to the new road where I used the gravel edge before again resorting to the pavement to take me the rest of the way to Loggerheads. On leaving Llanferres, I admired the gardens splendid with the plants of cultivation, sometimes complemented by wild flowers, but I did not include these in my count but only started to count when I became aware of the diversity of wild flowers growing on the verge. Many of them very familiar such as Hogweed, Daisy, Dandelion and Cow parsley but let us not dismiss them as they all add to the picture. I quickly noticed pink Dovesfoot cranesbill, yellow Creeping buttercup, blue Forget-me-not, lilac Tufted vetch and the burgundy coloured Common vetch. Honeysuckle climbed and entwined on Holly and Elder, the latter in full bloom. Meadow buttercup and Tufted vetch crowded together to make a colourful scene that would enhance or compete with any cultivated garden. There were Wild cherry trees, no longer in flower and their fruits already taken
by the birds. The yellow flowers of Birdsfoot trefoil caught my eye. This is the food plant for the caterpillars of several butterflies and its seed heads, when ripe, resemble the claw of a bird, hence the name. Red campion, Crosswort and Meadow sweet were here with a patch of Nettle. Many people regard nettles as a pest, and so they are in the wrong place such as a decorative garden, but in the wild they are valuable food sources for the caterpillars of some of our most colourful butterflies and through the centuries they have been harvested by man for a variety of uses. Rosebay willowherb flourishes and, in season, is very colourful and is the food for Elephant hawk moths but is reviled by gardeners because of its plethora of fluffy seeds which blow everywhere. In the brook I spotted Brooklime and Watercresss. Near the gate and stile, the pearly white flowers of Guelder rose shone brightly in the sunshine. Not a rose, of course, but a relative of cultivated Viburnums. I passed more Birdsfoot trefoil with red and white Clover, all capable of extracting nitrogen from the air and 'fixing' it in the soil to the benefit of other plants, such as the profusion of Ox-eye daisies. A Laburnum tree hung heavy with racemes of yellow flowers and a Horse chestnut was displaying its miniature 'conkers'. Regarded as a native species this tree was only introduced into Britain about 350 years ago. All about were Knapweed, Yellow rattle, Meadow vetchling and bright blue Germander speedwell. Yarrow, which is usually white flowered, had some heads of pink - as far as I know the only umbellifer to do this. Marking the road edge was yellow flowered Black medick, or

Nature Notes should I say Shamrock? For this is the plant it is believed that St Patrick plucked to illustrate the doctrine of 'three persons in one God'. Up the slope was a collection of trees - Hazel, Oak, Sycamore, Field maple, wild rose and others, fronted by a range of grasses including Meadow grass, Yorkshire fog, Cocksfoot, Rye grass and Timothy amongst which grew Ragwort (Cinnabar moth food plant), Spear thistle, Sorrel, Yarrow, Perennial sow thistle and the now faded flowers of Cowslips. Many of the trees were encrusted with yellow crustose lichens which impart colour to these trees in the winter. Passing Tafarn y Gelyn I regained the pavement to see a big patch of Butterbur whose large leaves where once used to wrap 'pats' of butter to keep them fresh. There was a stand of Welted thistle - not everybody's favourite but a good source of nectar and pollen for many insects. I wondered why so many people regard all insects as pests to be destroyed, when the vast majority of insects are useful to humans. Have we got so far away from reality that we are so ignorant of life and the natural world? Another Willowherb grows along here - the Great willowherb - differing from the Rosebay in having deeper pink flowers and downy undersides to the leaves. There was Garlic mustard, Figwort, Herb Bennet (related to the garden Geum), Dog's mercury, Greater Celandine and Welsh poppy. I passed under two fine Sycamores and a Wych elm tree and here (between the pavement and the road) the grasses were flowering magnificently. But soon the Council will come along and mow them all
down. Why? They are doing no harm! We live in the country for goodness sake not some municipal park where everything has to be controlled. Why cannot we enjoy them? People say it is 'only' grass yet grasses, and their derivatives, are probably the most important phylum in the world, without which we could not survive. Ground elder grows here. Hated by gardeners, with good reason, in the wild it tends to be kept in check by competition with the other plants and its white umbelliferous flowers provide pollen and nectar. To the untutored eye all the white umbels look the same yet, on this walk, I had seen six species, although I may not have named them all. They tend to flower in succession, perhaps giving the impression that one species dominates the roadside verges throughout the growing season. Sometimes they are not easy to identify and one has to rely on the seed capsules to separate them. And finally, I came to the houses just prior to the Loggerheads Garage where I noticed a Lilac tree, some Solomon's seal and, clinging to cracks in the wall, Shining cranesbill and Ivy-leaved toadflax. Although I have not mentioned all of them by name, all told, I had seen at least 84 species of plant and, undoubtedly, I had missed many more and these were only the ones apparent on this particular day. There will be others which show themselves at other times of the year, so who can guess just exactly how many there actually are. And all on one side of about a mile of a trunk road.
