Welcome

Welcome to the latest edition of News & Views. We have decided to continue to publish News & Views as there were no other viable offers to take it over. However, the frequency will change to bi-monthly in order to reduce the workload and fundraising required. Therefore, this is the September and October issue. The deadline for the November/December edition will be 20th October. Thank you to everyone for their encouragement and support in recent months and we’ll still need your generous support in future please! There’s some fine entertainment in the local community in the next couple of months, kicking off on the 1st Sept with both the Garden Show and Vale of Clwyd Classic. Our thanks to the latter for their sponsorship this month. More details of this year’s event are on page 13. Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan

Harvest Service (advance news) Our annual Harvest Evensong Service will be on Thursday 11th October at 7 pm, followed by a Festival Service on Sunday 14th. We will be having a Harvest Supper on Thursday 18th October at 7.00 pm. All are welcome. This year we would especially like to thank the village for rallying round when we were struggling to man and stock the cake stall at the Village Carnival. The Church always looks especially lovely at Harvest, and any contributions (financial, decorative or Harvest produce) would be most gratefully received. Churchyard Hugo and Ieuan Watts work exceptionally hard in the churchyard to maintain the safety, beauty and sanctity of this area. We would like respectfully to ask that everyone co-operates in helping to keep the churchyard as it should be kept. In particular we would ask that glass jars and vases are not left at graveyards. They can be a hazard when mowing and maintaining the grass and, of course, any broken glass would be a safety risk. Unfortunately we are still having a problem with plastic wrappings in the recycling bins, particularly in the area for cremated remains. It's easy to get it right- the bins are near to the main church door and are clearly marked!

Church News Thank you To everyone who has manned the depleted rota to keep the church building open in daylight hours during the summer months. Many people have appreciated the opportunity to have a quiet moment of reflection in our beautiful church. The church will remain open during daylight hours throughout September and most of October. Please visit if you are passing through. You can also take the opportunity if you wish to donate to the foodbank at the collection point at the back of the church. We have just made our third donation for this year. Thank you also (you know who you are) to the people who have cleaned and decorated the church over the past few months. All volunteers are always welcomed! Licensing Service Wendy Shillito will be licensed as a Lay Reader at Gresford Church at 11 am on Saturday 29th September. All are welcome to attend the service (it's a very big church!) and there will be a get- together at her home afterwards to which all again are welcome (tel. 01352 720377). Messy Church There are now two Messy Churches in our area. The Messy Church at Gwernaffield continues to meet on the third Sunday every month at 4-6 pm. Mold Church is also doing a Messy Church on Tuesdays in the school holidays. After feedback that we needed to make Messy Church messier, we have been building towers of Babel with boxes and mud, wading through paddling pools in search of fish and recently spraying the hapless leaders with water pistols! We will be fighting the Battle of Jericho on Sunday 23rd September. More details available from Wendy (01352720377) or John (01352810677) Welcome To Kathy Stewart who is our new Curate. Kathy has lived in Mold for many years and was ordained in June. We are looking forward to working with her. And finally- money Gift Aid Direct leaflets are now being distributed throughout the village. If you can afford even a small regular donation to help to assist our depleted church funds, Indoor Bowls please complete and return the leaflets to Rob, Anne, Noel or Daniel. Do you have any old ÂŁ5 or ÂŁ10 notes or other old coinage? UK or even foreign Every Tuesday stuff? If so, please feel free to leave in the 7.00 - 9.00pm church as a donation and we will do the Llanferres Village Hall rest. Thank you!

Local news Within one year of joining Wrexham Amateur Athletics Club, Sioned has accomplished so much this Summer. You may see her training up and down the road or over the fields. This is what she gets up to when she's not at home. During League fixtures in Manchester and Crewe she achieved good times in the 1500m and 800m so someone from the Club suggested we enter Sioned in the Welsh Athletics Junior Championships in Newport, South Wales on the 23/24 June. Sioned who will be 16 this October was entered in the Under 17 Women's 1500m on the Saturday. She took Gold with a PB time of 4.39m. On Sunday she competed in the 800m and came 4th with a PB time of 2.18m. Since then Sioned has competed in Cardiff at the Welsh Schools Championships, again coming 1st in the 1500m for North East Wales at the beginning of July. Later in July, Sioned was called up to represent Wales in the SIAB Track & Field International at Grangemouth, Scotland. She came 4th in the 1500m, ahead of Ireland and Scotland. A few days later she was part of the Under 20 team for Wales at the Welsh Athletics International at Swansea. There she came 5th in the 1500m. Thankfully, we've had a little less travelling in August and only been to the Wrexham Games. She managed 1st in both 1500m and 800m there, with

good times. Next fixture is the Welsh Inter Regional Championships at Brecon, representing North Wales in the 1500m. Sioned is now looking forward to the Cross Country season for the Winter. The family are so proud of our speedy Welsh lass!

Now firmly established as one of the United Kingdom's top historic events, Saturday the 1st of September sees the eighth running of Clwyd Vale Motor Club's 'Vale of Clwyd Classic'. The event is based at The Druid Inn at Llanferres, with technical and safety inspections taking place on Friday 31st August at Loggerheads Garage between 17:00 and 20:30, followed by documentation checks at The Druid where the cars will be parked up to be viewed. The event is part of a nationwide championship aimed solely at vehicles registered prior to 1985, with many of the vehicles competing from the 1960's The event brings in many competitors from all over the UK and Eire, with the majority of crews staying in the locality during the event, thus it provides a great boost to the local economy. The first car starts from The Druid Inn at Llanferres at 8:15am on the Saturday, the competitors will head into the first driving test at Loggerheads Country Park; where Denbighshire County Council have decided to make spectators more than welcome. The event will then wind its way around the lanes of Flintshire and Denbighshire, taking in many more driving and manoeuvrability tests along the way. The route is a closely guarded secret, as some parts take place on private land through the kind permission of landowners. It is also guarded as the standard of the crews over the last few years has risen, many competitors are so skilful they only drop a few seconds penalties over the whole event, so everything is done to provide them with a challenge. Taking over the role of the course designer, or 'Clerk of The Course' this

year is another local Rallyist; Andy Darlington from Mold. Andy is the IT Manager at the Alun School in Mold and has recently driven on Wales Rally GB at a National level. Andy said, "It's great to bring so many well-known and respected competitors on the HRCR Championship here to Llanferres, the response we have had since this event started has been nothing short of amazing. We plan to use sections at the beginning of the event close to Llanferres, the first part will head out over the Bwlch Penbarras into the Vale of Clwyd. The morning tea halt and lunch will be at Ruthin Farmers Mart this year where the cars will also do 2 special tests. Again spectators are welcome from 10:30. The final section around Nannerch will then see the cars return to the village for the prize giving. Sixty cars are scheduled to make the start from The Druid on Saturday, the route will take some eight and a bit hours to complete with the first finishing car and crew scheduled to be back around 17:00 at The Druid Leading the cars away will be last year's winners Matt Warren from Chester with his Navigator from Yorkshire Andy Pullan, Matt will be chased hard by the Irish Ford Escort of Dermot Carnegie plus a number of other top crews. This year we have a number of interesting cars with two of note; the 1937 Bentley Derby 4.25 of Stuart Anderson and the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Alan Beardshaw. Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday July 9th had as guest speaker Rhun Jones from Denbighshire Countryside Services. Our guest speaker for the evening should have been Sarah Hughes speaking on 'Preparing Your Exhibits for the Show'. Unfortunately, Sarah was taken ill and unable to come but Rhun Jones had stepped in at the last minute. Rhun talked about the 'Save the Curlew Project' which he is working on at the moment. In his illustrated talk he spoke of the decline of these iconic birds. The Shropshire Project had mounted round the clock cameras which showed the Curlew nests were often predated by Foxes, Badgers and Crows. Perhaps a greater threat was the change in farming practices where fields were often cut early in the year for silage instead of the traditional mid-summer cut for hay. This results in the Curlew nests being destroyed even before the eggs have hatched. Rhun would like to hear from anybody who knows of curlews nesting, or even calling, in the district, so that he can build up an accurate record of the population. My thanks to Rhun for his very interesting talk and stepping in at such short notice.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ I arrived home from a pleasant five day break to find a message on the answerphone from a concerned young woman from Llanferres. She believed she had identified Hemlock WaterDropwort growing along the River Alyn footpath, near to the ford on the road up to Maeshafn. We arranged to meet and I also identified Hemlock WaterDropwort, confirming her suspicions. Although a danger to some livestock, we discussed that the public should not be unduly worried. Hemlock Water Drop-wort is a member of the white flowered carrot family, which also includes Cow Parsley and Hog Weed. Due to the shape of the flowering heads these are all umbellifers; umbella, translating from Latin means 'little parasol' and covers a large family of plants, some of which are poisonous. Giant Hog Weed, for example, is notorious for causing painful skin burns, that are slow to heal due to the chemical in the sap. Yet, a weaker dose of this same chemical gives carrots their swollen roots and flavour. There are a great number of toxic plants growing naturally; Rag Wort, Greater Cellendine, Monkshood, Daffodil Bulbs to name a few. Monkshood, also known as 'Devil's Helmet', of the Aconitum family has a very attractive blue flower, and a more fearsome reputation than Hemlock. Death is due to multiple organ failure. We should all be aware of the dangers and leave such plants alone. If identification is an issue, gloves should always be worn when gardening. However, I have seen large patches of Hemlock Conium growing on Anglesey and not heard of any fatalities. Although at school, I was told the government of Ancient Athens famously used Hemlock mixed with opium to execute the philosopher Socrates in 399BC, this

infusion can not be taken accidentally as it has to be prepared. Foraging, has had a lot of TV coverage and so it has become popular to collect Fungi. Unless you are an 'expert' in this field this can be dangerous and is not worth taking a risk as so many can be mistaken for mushrooms. The swollen white root of Hemlock has been mistaken for wild parsnips with serious consequences. While looking for Hemlock by the river I was lucky enough to see a Dipper catching small fish and taking them under the roots of a tree on the river bank. It must have a second brood, probably losing the first clutch to Mink which live along the river bank. The same weekend, I returned some books to John 'the caravan' Harrison and sat outside enjoying the sunshine with Vera and Chas while 'Harrison' busied himself making coffee. He then told me he had been watching Glow-worms during the evenings. This warm spell of weather has been ideal for glow-worms due to their short life span of 2-3 weeks: a wet spell would be a disaster for them. The Glow-worm had virtually disappeared from the village due to disturbance, but now, with not too much mowing and tidying, they are back. The female crawls to the top of tall grasses and the tail glows greenish-yellow to attract a mate. Not a worm at all but a beetle, the female is flightless, it is the male that flies around looking for the glowing light. After mating, eggs are laid and remain dormant until the following Spring, and then the cycle starts again. Enjoy the rest of the summer. Eddie.

A note from your County Councillor Normally August is a quiet month for Councillors because no formal meetings are held during the month and most Officers are taking their annual family holidays. Sadly because of the fires on the Llantysilio Mountain and the Horse Shoe Pass which is in our ward this month has been a busy one. The Fire Service set up an emergency control centre in a lay-by just before the Ponderosa and I have attended a number of emergency meetings during the early part of August involving the Police, Fire Service, NRW, Countryside Services and Highways. I have visited local businesses effected by the fire and the resulting road closures and I have arranged meetings with residents who were directly affected. Six hundred and sixty acres of moorland has been destroyed by the fire and it has had a massive impact on wildlife, livestock, local businesses, tourism and local residents. As we all know from the tragic fires abroad these incidents can also impact on peoples property and lives can be lost in extreme circumstances. Fortunately on this occasion there were only some minor injuries when a fire service vehicle overturned and although the Ponderosa was on one occasion evacuated to date no property has been damaged. I have called for a meeting with all the relevant parties to review the incident because lessons can always be learnt and as the climate changes we need to ensure that we are prepared for these events and that we do everything we can to try and stop them before they start. Six weeks on, the Mountain is still dangerous because the fire is now burning in the peat below the surface and the Fire

Service is still present dealing with these hotspots. I have asked for warning signs to be placed on the moor asking people to keep to the paths because if they wander off and fall into one of these hotspots they could be seriously injured. Locally I have asked for the trees to be trimmed back at the Maeshafn/Gwernymynydd junction with the A494 because they are becoming a traffic hazard. I have asked Welsh Water to look into the sewerage smell in Tafarn Y Gelyn and the manhole has been repaired by the pond. I am still awaiting a report from the County who are looking into why the pond has run dry when water is still running through the water system below the road. I believe that the owners of Aberduna Quarry are considering submitting a planning application to partially land fill the large hole left after the quarry closed. They are currently consulting Community Councils etc as part of that process and I believe that they will be attending the October meeting of the Llanferres Community Council which is open to the public. If you have any concerns about these proposals please let me know or come along to the meeting. As you know I have been heavily involved in trying to improve our BroadBand and Mobile phone services across the ward. Hopefully next month we should learn more about the Welsh Governments plans for the next phase of the Superfast roll out through out Wales. In the mean time I am pleased to report that EE have at long last confirmed that they are going to complete engineering works to strengthen their mast in Eryrys so that they can improve their mobile phone service in the area by adding new fibre connections to the mast.

Local News The County has started the process for the next LDP which will come into force after the current LDP finishes in 2021. They are now asking for people to submit sites for inclusion in the new LDP and residents have from the 6th August to the 26th November to complete and submit the paperwork. There is no guarantee that your submissions will be included but they will all be considered in the next consultation phase. The forms are available on the county’s web site under planning and current consultations. If you have a spare five minutes it is a good idea to look at the Current Consultations section of the county’s web site and have your say on such things as the replacement LDP, waste collections, the county’s Property Portfolio and even enforcement notices. Finally, I would like to congratulate all those who have been involved in creating and maintaining the villages open spaces which have been awarded the Green Flag for the coming year. I know that a lot of work has been done in the Recreational area by the Playing field and Recreation Association and we should also thank the members of the last Community Council for all the work they undertook in purchasing and creating the Maes Ysgawen open space. I believe that David Jones and John Almond received the award for Maes Ysgawen and Bob Barton received the award on behalf of the Playing field and Recreation Association. Best wishes, Martyn 01824 780703 martyn.holland@denbighshire.gov.uk

The Civil War North Wales was generally supportive of the Monarchy during the Civil War of 1642 to 1651. However, in military terms, the area was a backwater compared with major events elsewhere. The first incursion of Cromwellian troops into north east Wales was in 1643 when some 600 horse and foot soldiers travelled through Wrexham, Flint and Holywell to Mostyn Hall. They retreated on the sight of a Royalist fleet arriving on the Welsh coast. During this foray the Roundheads had caused much damage defacing church windows and monuments and pulling down all coats of arms. In the following year they unsuccessfully besieged Ruthin Castle. There was savage fighting in the streets and much damage done to the town before the Roundheads retired.

War period. However, as they have now been lost, this cannot be confirmed. A more reliable find was made by the late Charles Quant of Silverwood. He discovered two cannon balls in his garden. One was a grapefruit sized "improved" pebble. The other a hollow iron ball weighing about 1.8 kg (4 lbs), complete with fuse hole. Expert advice, at that time, was that it was only the second intact exploding ball known from that period. It is likely that a Cromwellian troop was encamped on the fields near Aberduna Farm in order to control the crossing of the River Alyn at the place now known as Loggerheads. Presumably the troop had fired practice rounds into the bank upon which Silverwood now stands.

Tony King They were again in the area in 1645 when they plundered Plas Teg near Mold. Subsequently they marched from Mold to Ruthin and on to Denbigh Green where they defeated a Royalist army and chased it away to Llangernyw. There was a renewed assault on Ruthin Castle in the following year: this time it was successful. Military action in the area generally ceased in late 1646 following the fall of the city of Chester and the successful sieges of Flint and Rhuddlan castles. Our area did not go unaffected by the war as the Mold to Ruthin road was an important communication link. The Potts family acquired Glan rafon Hall, at Loggerheads, at the start of the nineteenth century. During restoration works in 1810 some armaments were discovered. These were a sword, an iron helmet and an iron breastplate. It was claimed that these were from the Civil
