Charles Herbert Cooke “I am researching my family history and I have come across a great uncle who died in Llanferres in 1957, name of Charles Herbert Cooke. Born in Suffolk, he was a farm bailiff in Bury St Edmunds before he moved. So he might have worked on a farm in the area. Does anyone have an archive which might shed any light on him or his wife Kathleen who died the same year.” If you have any information that may help please contact News & Views news@llanferres.org and we’ll put you in touch with person who is enquiring. Thanks, Paul & Siobhan

Local News LLANFERRES OVER 60's Club At our meeting on 14th July we heard an amusing talk by Alan Minnery entitled “Confessions of a Scouser. On August 12th we had an outing, the transport kindly provided by members. We visited Rug Chapel in Corwen, which was built in 1637. The interior, although small, was breathtakingly beautiful. It is a lasting legacy of true craftsmen. From there we went to the Ponderosa Restaurant on the Horseshoe Pass, where we chose lunches from the extensive, and very reasonably priced menu. At our September 8th meeting we will have "An Afternoon with Pam Ayres and friend". Please join us at 2pm.

Vale of Clwyd Classic SHOWDOWN TIME ! This year’s Vale of a Clwyd Classic sees the 60 plus classic cars descending on Llanferres on the evening of Friday 4th September with the safety checks being undertaken at Loggerheads Garage from 5.30pm and then documentation in the Druid Inn until 9pm. This year’s event has again attracted the great and the good from the UK and Ireland and sees a top fifteen from which any winner could emerge. The HRCR national championship is on a knife edge , whilst the navigator of Car 1 , Iain Tullie has won the championship, the driver’s title comes down to a winner takes all between Howard Warren in Car 1, a 1965 Porsche 911 who has to repeat his win of last year to secure the title, and Steve Entwhistle in Car 4, a mini effectively known as the "Orangebox". These two crews are tied for the lead and the calculations for who can win have been discussed at length in the championship contingency! The first cars leave the Druid Inn at 8.15am and head to the Loggerheads Country Park car park for the first test before a regularity section ( this being where the crews follow a secret route issued to them 5 mins before the start where they have to maintain a low average speed from 15 to 28 mph dependant on the roads being used and they will come across checkpoints which they have to arrive at a specific time) . The top crews are now so good that they normally arrive at these controls within 1 or 2 seconds of the ideal time. So as you see the cars who will drive back past the Druid at about 8.45am, most navigators will have their heads down checking maps and average speed tables . The cars then take in sections and special tests throughout the Vale of Clwyd before a late lunch halt at the White House at Rhaullt. The cars then complete the section around Babell and Lixwm before coming back over Moel Arthur into the Vale for the last section and finish up at the Druid from 4.30pm for supper and the prize giving . We hope to see as usual the locals turn out to wave the cars off and on their return after a tough taxing but what I hope will be an enjoyable day. Guy Woodcock

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The August meeting was, as usual, devoted to the final arrangements for our Annual Show, the 41st, to be held on Saturday 5 September at 2.00 pm in the Village Hall. Exhibitors are reminded that entries must be received by 6.00 pm Wednesday 2 September and exhibits must be staged between 8.00 and 10.30 am on 5 September, judging will commence at 10.30 am. Trophies will be presented at 2.30 pm by County Councillor Martyn Holland and there will be an auction of produce at 4.00 pm (proceeds to the OAP Welfare Fund). See centre pages for more details.

Visit to Dove Cottage, Penyffordd The above visit was scheduled for Monday the 13th July, 2015 but was postponed because of the inclement weather and rescheduled for the 20th July, 2015. Some of the original booked Gardening Club Members were unable to go on that night but 12 members and friends arrived there. The gardens were situated near the railway line to Wrexham. We were warmly greeted by Mrs Wallis who invited us to roam around the garden at our leisure. What variety of colour and well laid out gardens. The flower gardens were beautiful with neatly sculptured defined shaped borders. The vegetable patch was well stocked with a sample of potatoes lifted and left on the soil for members to see. Fruit cages were full of raspberries and blueberries all looking very healthy. The pond looked good and the garden soil was a very rich dark colour which had plenty of horse manure added to it regularly. In front of the house there were pots of black petunias which were very unusual. We had just finished our tour of the garden when the rain arrived and we were all invited into the conservatory for delicious home made cakes, and tea or coffee. A very enjoyable visit. The Richardson family in Llanferres The Richardsons were a renowned family of Chester gold and silver smiths. Many of their creations are exhibited in the Grosvenor Museum in Chester. One of the items listed in an inventory of Llanferres church plate published in 1905 was a silver chalice inscribed "The Gift of Alice Lloyd, 1699, Llanferres". This had been crafted by Richard Richardson I (1674-1730). Richardson's son Richard Richardson II (1712-1769) developed an extensive portfolio of copper and lead mines in north Wales and also a strong interest in lead ore smelting. He had an interest in two lead mines in our community. The first was on Colomendy land near Aberduna - it was not a profitable investment. The other was the Maes-y-safn Mine in which he held a 3/24 share. This was a good investment as the mine was very productive for most of the period between 1740 and 1769. He also owned a half share in a small estate in Llanferres. This included land on the east side of the River Alyn which contained part of Cascade Wood. A water wheel had been installed on the river bank nearby and was used to power pumps in the mine which pumped water from the mine workings into a drainage level. This level drained into the river a short distance downstream. On his death his sons, Richard Richardson IV (1755-1822) and Ralph, took over his mining and smelting interests once they reached adult hood. This interest continued for the rest of the century although the Maesy-safn mine became increasingly

unproductive. However at the time of the Llanferres and Cilcen Enclosure Award (1801) they were in a position to claim allotments of land in Llanferres. Richard on account of the estate in Llanferres that he had inherited from his father and Ralph on behalf of the (then defunct) Maes-y-safn mining company. The allotments were in the Maeshafn area and were swiftly sold to Mr Potts of Glan rafon to add to his estate. Richard Richardson IV purchased the Manor of Capenhurst in Cheshire . This ended the connection of the Richardson family with our community. Sadly the water wheel pit was destroyed a few years ago. This was probably the oldest industrial relic in our community. Village Hall Fund Raiser Saturday August 15th The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyable – the stalls were magnificent, reflecting the hard work of the stall holders and the generosity of so many people. We are also indebted to those residents from nearby villages who helped the make our event such a success. Thank you to all for manning our various stalls, your kind donations and of course for your attendance too. If you were unable to join us this time, do talk to those who came. We know that you will want to join us for our next venture (as yet undecided) but with the joint aim of raising much needed funds for our Village Hall and perhaps even more importantly, helping to develop our community spirit in Llanferres. The committee are delighted to have raised, with your help, £654.65 (for a two hour event!). THANK YOU R Armstrong Chairman

Green Flag Award for our Park Llanferres Park has once again been awarded the The Green Flag Community Award® in 2015. The Park is one of six managed green spaces in the county that have been awarded the honour by Keep Wales Tidy in this year’s Green Flag Awards. The Green Flag Award is awarded in recognition of high quality parks or green spaces. The location is judged by green space experts who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. Lucy Prisk, Green Flag Coordinator at Keep Wales Tidy said: “We are delighted to be celebrating a record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme. The success of community sites is due to the commitment and dedication of local volunteers and it is thanks to them that we have fantastic community facilities available on our doorstep. “I would like to pass on our congratulations to all of the volunteers receiving the Green Flag Community Award and hope that together we can continue to raise the standards of parks and green space in Wales.” So congratulations to Dan Hurst, Simon Hodge, Nick Lennon, Gareth Jaggard and the rest of the Committee, and to those who have volunteered to help maintain the Park in the last 12 months.

A note from your County Councillor Although we have no official County Council meetings in August it has still been a busy month. At county level I have moved from the Corporate Governance ( The Audit Committee ) and I now sit on two Scrutiny Committees namely Partnerships and Communities. At my first Partnership Scrutiny meeting we had a presentation from the Cooperate Group who have won a contract from the Welsh Government to reduce poverty in Rhyl and to create jobs in that area. Sadly large amounts of European Objective one money have already been spent on similar projects with little evidence of long term results. I am concerned that there is no way of measuring how successful these sorts of projects are even when the objectives are worthy ones. I am sure that it is just a coincidence that the eight million pounds being given to alleviate poverty in the county is a similar figure to the eight million we have had cut from Denbighshire's budget this year by Welsh Government.

Loggerheads and Llanferres at approximately 2.40 pm on Sunday 6th September. If it is a fine day you will be able to pick your spot and watch them fly by and if you are planning to go out that day you need to bear this in mind. This month is the time of year for village shows but the weather has been far from kind to some of them. Sadly the Eryrys tractor show was a damp event this year and although they had over seventy entries for the annual tractor run through neighbouring villages everyone got very wet. The Llanarmon Show was much luckier with a beautiful day and large crowds. This may have been helped by the plug the event had on National TV when BBC breakfast visited the village. I attended the village hall fundraising event in Llanferres on Saturday 15th August and our thanks should go to all those members of the community who worked very hard to make the event a great success. I know that the village hall committee are concerned about financing the hall in the future and everyone can do their bit by promoting the hall as a venue for events, parties, concerts, etc. We still have the Llanferres Garden Show and the Llandegla village show to look forward to, both of which are on Saturday 5th September.

We had hoped that Pen Y Waen would have been resurfaced by now but extra work was needed on drainage and gully problems before the new road surface could be laid. It is hoped that the resurfacing work will now take I have received a number of calls about place in September. the poor state of Rectory Lane and the depth of some of the pot holes in the The annual Tour of Britain will once lower part of the road. The County again pass through Denbighshire this claim that it is an unadopted road ( year. It will involve a rolling road despite street lights) and as budgets closure and the riders will pass through are tight they have to deal with other

A note from your County Councillor adopted roads first. I am looking at an alternative way of repairing the road and I have also asked about the process of getting the road adopted in the future. Once I have more information I will let you know. We are still encountering problems at Pot Hole Quarry Cliffs where youths have been holding further overnight drinking parties and bonfires. They have left large amounts of litter, broken glass and camping equipment behind. Can I ask that if anyone sees bonfires at night in that area they should report them to the Police.

I hope that you all enjoy what is left of our summer and that we have an Indian summer to make up for the lack of sunshine this year. Best wishes, Martyn P.S. we now have a new date for the resurfacing of the Pen Y Waen road. The road will once again be closed from the 15th - 25th September.

FRIENDS OF THE CLWYDIAN RANGE AND DEE VALLEY We thought you might be interested to know that a new society has been launched, which aims to bring together people who love the countryside of the Clwydian Range and the Upper Dee Valley, a nationally designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). We are lucky to have such stunning landscapes – everything from high heather moorland to rich river valleys (and what a river!) – and we want more and more people to understand and enjoy them, and indeed help us to protect them. We have so many iconic places – Pontcysyllte, Castell Dinas Bran, lots of Iron Age Hillforts, the Eglwyseg escarpment, Gop Hill, Moel Famau with its much loved Jubilee Tower – that we really want to share them with everybody. This Society is called Friends of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley – a cumbersome title, but it reflects our connection to the AONB. We are an independent organisation run by our Trustees. We are hoping to register as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. We have set our membership fees low, at £10 per annum (£15 joint/family), to attract as many people as possible, and for that members will receive regular invitations to themed walks to special places in the AONB led by experts, talks about the AONB from interesting speakers, a quarterly electronic Newsletter, a few discounts from local shops, and a welcome pack including a pin badge,

car sticker and even a DVD about the Clwydian Range. As well as enjoying our activities, no doubt some of us will even help out at events throughout the AONB. But most important, we hope residents and visitors will be encouraged to celebrate and discover this special area which now extends all the way from Prestatyn to Corwen. Membership forms are available at Loggerheads, the Loggerheads garage, the Raven, the Druid, Ruthin Craft Centre, Ruthin Library and many other places in Ruthin, Denbigh and Mold. We hope you will think about joining us ? Meanwhile, if you have any queries, please phone Mike Skuse on 01824 702 973(evening) or Helen Mrowiec on 01352 810 614 (daytime). Nature Notes In July Nature Notes I wrote about House Martins apparently inspecting nesting sites communally and, perhaps, arriving at a joint decision. Following on from this, we noticed a flurry of activity by Martins near the occupied nest on the front of our house. They were fluttering around the entrance hole with much chattering which resembled excitement. I do not want to be anthropomorphic but it is difficult not to compare this to people gathering round a pram to admire a baby. The same day the young of the nest fledged. Was this activity designed to encourage reluctant young to leave the nest? It certainly seemed that way. It is interesting that this first brood of House Martins may have already left for Africa, ahead of the adults. How do they know where to go? Thistles are not everybody's favourite plant yet they are a very valuable source of pollen and nectar for a wide range of bees and other insects. A friend was surprised when I told him there were many species as he had grouped them all together as 'those prickly things' whose seeds blow everywhere, yet they vary enormously. There are about twenty species nationally and locally we have at least six varieties and probably more. The Creeping thistle (Cirsium arvense) is probably the most numerous and its lilac flowers are very attractive to Small tortoiseshell butterflies (where are they this year?) and its seeds are a favourite of Goldfinches. I recently saw a flock in excess of 50 birds feeding in a local field with only a scattering of thistles. The red-purple flowers of Welted thistles (Carduus acanthoides), on the other hand, attract much fewer butterflies

although Skippers seem to like them. Spear thistle (Cirsium vulgare), which also has lilac flowers is only moderately attractive to butterflies but bees like them. It is easily identified by its long sharply pointed leaves. Recently, in Gloucestershire, we came across the tallest and shortest of the thistles. Woolly thistle (Cirsium eriophorum) grows up to five feet(150cm) tall and has large heads covered in white wool, topped with a reddish flower. When we were there, these flowers were buzzing with bumblebees, sometimes four or five on a single head. Others hosted Honey bees, Hoverflies, small beetles and even some 'day-flying' moths. The shortest is, not surprisingly, Dwarf thistle (Cirsium acaule) which has a 12 inch(30 cm) rosette of prostrate leaves with a single, stemless, red-purple flower in the middle. The ones I saw were mostly hosting small flies. While at this site I was fortunate to see the uncommon Essex skipper butterfly which is gradually spreading north and can now be found in the south midlands. Seeing this butterfly involved much crawling around on hands and knees with the nose close to the ground, trying to get close to each specimen, because the Essex skipper is almost identical to the much commoner Small skipper. The differences are minute. The Essex skipper has black-tipped antennae and the male has a faint scent mark that is parallel to the outer edge of the fore wing, whilst on the Small skipper it is at a slight angle. However, my crawling and persistence eventually paid off. John Almond (01352 810808
