PIRATE PENGUINS

Hello Pirate Penguins! We are now in our final month of the term! I cannot believe how fast these twelve months have been; it feels as if the term just started! Although we are wrapping up the term, this is our time to make our final lasting impact. Finish strong! We must provide a strong foundation for the upcoming officers and allow them to progress and improve even further throughout the next term. Congratulations to those who were elected as new officers, and good luck to those who are holding elections soon! I know it was nerve-wracking for many of us, but the next term will definitely allow all of us to grow and become better leaders! For those who ran for a position and were not elected, always remember, that you do not need to hold an officer position to make an impact. After all, the members are the foundation of the club. Take incentive, and chair a service event or apply for the Division Leadership Team for the upcoming term! There are so many opportunities in Key Club, so make sure to take advantage of them!

I know I will definitely say this many times throughout my last few months in Key Club, but it has truly been an honor serving you, Division 19 North. There will be many bittersweet moments as we transition into the 2017-2018 term, but I have no regrets. This was our year to excel, and we did. With over 9,000 service hours and over $4,600 raised, we have definitely exceeded my expectations and even broke division records. Now, for the final month, let’s end this term with a BANG!

Waddling with a smile,

Christopher Soo-Hoo DIVISION 19 NORTH Lieutenant Governor

Search for Service! Written by: Division 19 North Service Expo Coord. Baylee Battle

Finding events can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! You don’t have to make events or find events on your own. There are many resources, including fellow members or officers that can help you in finding or coordinating service events. First, you can use other members. You can always hit up Baylee Battle, the division service expo coordinator, if you need help finding events. You can also refer to other clubs in the division for advice or ideas on events. When it comes to actual resources, there are websites you can use to help find events near you. A really great website to visit is volunteermatch.org . This website organizes events by location and type of event, based off of your preferences. Another great way to find events is to check with your school for any events they may be having, and see if they need help with any of them. Finally, another option is to check in with your local community center and see what upcoming events they have. Check with the director of the community center and see if they need help with their events. There are many ways to find events, and these are just a few, but you can always look in other places for events! Feel free to hit up Baylee Battle on facebook for help finding events, if you need any help!

Dues! Written by: Division 19 North Executive Assistant Celia Yu What is Club Rush? What time is it? Dues time! It's the time of the year to pay your dues! What are dues? Dues are annual payments to Key Club International to ensure that you continue to be a dues paid member. No events or service hours are counted until you have paid your dues! Payment is $11.50, but your school club may charge extra for donations. $7.00 goes to Key Club International, and $4.50 goes to our CNH District. The early bird deadline for dues is November 1st! The last day to pay your dues so they aren't late is December 1st. Put these dates on your calendar! Pay your dues to whichever board members are in charge, and they will ensure you are a dues paid member! Remember, this is very important because a member who has not paid dues would not be able to go to great events including DCON and Fall Rally! Get your dues in as soon as possible so you don't have to rush at the last minute! Many of you may not see the point of paying dues, but it is not only beneficial to Key Club International and the CNH District! All the money goes back to you, the members. An outline of what dues money includes is below:

CAMS ARICLE BY: AILEEN MARANAN Although Key Clubbers have returned to school, the love for service has not stopped. CAMS Key Club volunteered in 3 different service projects for the month of January. For New Year’s Race, Key Clubbers sorted bags and passed out medals to participants. Following that event was the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. Here, Key Clubbers helped collect traffic cones as they walked in the parade. It was definitely a day of fun and bonding! Lastly, Key Clubbers helped cheer on runners and passed out medals to those participating in Conquer our Run.

CAMS Key Club has also been planning for CNH District Convention. We have been finalizing our budget and brainstorming activities and fundraisers to keep the cost low while keeping PTP and ELIMINATE in mind. We are hoping to send 16 members to District Convention and are confirming that number very soon. We have additionally been in contact with our Kiwanis family and recently had the President of California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) Circle K come to one of our meetings to talk about his experience at Circle K. He also provided college advice to many of the underclassmen that came to the meeting. With a few months left in the term, we surely hope to finish strong!

Da vinci ARICLE BY: KALYN ATKINSON During the month of January we attended Conclave which was very informative for some of our members who want to run for future division positions. It gave them the confidence and clarity needed for them to run. We also had many of our members attend the Division Ice Skating event and bring their friends to help raise money for Eliminate. To continue the spirit of raising money, Da Vinci had a bake sale where we sold cookies,

donuts, and hot chocolate after school. We raised around $30. We are also planning another fundraiser around our school in the spirit of Valentine's Day! We are excited to see what else is to come for the month of February for our club!

A message from

gardena ARICLE BY: KATHLEEN ROJAS For the month of January, Gardena Key Club had a total of two events one helping out the division we serve for Division19 North. Saturday the 28th was when 15 Gardena Key Club members attended conclave and went through the long hours of hearing the future of their Region for the 2017-2018 term. A huge congrats to the current Executive Assistant, Sandy Navarro for giving it her all as a candidate and being an amazing role model for the future of Gardena Key Club. She proudly represented the club and her true passion for this organization. A few hours later we had our yearly Ice Skating Fundraiser with Division 19 North, proudly helping the Pediatric Trauma Program and all funds going towards it. Not only did we surpass the goal but we had penguins slip but also enjoy the bonding time with their ohana and social aspect that this specific event has to offer. The following week we had the “Super Bowl Kickoff” at our local Elementary school where members helped assist Jane in anything that was needed from the Key Clubbers. We definitely enjoy serving whether it is small or a huge event, there’s always a helping hand and a smile as we waddle for service. With the term almost ending we hope for the best for the remainder of the term and wish to finish strong.

hawthorne ARICLE BY: GENESIS GRANADOS Our month started a bit slow because of the break. We mainly focused on getting back on track once we came back from break. We started with an event with cats! Many of our members had a lot of fun despite the weather. We are considering getting more events similar to these to help our members be more committed and motivated. We also had many district events, like the ice skating fundraiser event and Conclave! We also attended a Valentine card making event for those in need. Currently, we are trying to conduct drives that will benefit shelter for animals. This drive will be for a whole month.

hmsa ARICLE BY: HAZEL CARTAGENA January was HMSA Key Club's slow transition for the new year of 2017. We started the month with preparing members as the new leaders of our board. Then, we volunteered at HMSA's winter formal setup and cleanup where members created decorations for the Great Gatsby theme. Upcoming we have Relay For Life in May and members are currently raising funds to donate. We will be decorating illuminates bags for cancer patients with this year’s theme of Disney. In January 28, members attended Conclave to watch candidates get elected. For the rest of the month, HMSA Key Club has been preparing for board elections; we are excited to announce the new board on February.

lawndale ARICLE BY: DANIEL PAJULAS

For the month of January, Lawndale Key Club has struggled to find service events during the month due to the rainy weather. However, our club has planned out our club elections for next year’s term! We’ll be having our elections on the 21st or 28th of February, where members who are interested in a board position will have to present a 2-3 minute speech stating why they deserve the position they desire, any past leadership experiences, ways to enhance the club for next year, and more! We have also planned out a fundraiser where we will be selling roasted peanuts either at our future basketball games or during after school hours! The funds made from this fundraiser will go towards the club for next year’s term! For the month of February, we hope to achieve having more service events and having more members present at division events!

CAMS Nikki Catangay

Da vinci Jeremy de jesus

We are extremely proud to announce NIKKI CATANGAY as CAMS Key Club Member of the Month! With only her first year being in Key Club, she has already shown us her uplifting and dedicated spirit. We were stoked to select her as a delegate for this year’s Conclave, because we knew she will use her best judgement to elect the most suitable Lieutenant Governor. We know Nikki will continue to be a strong member of Key Club long after our board has graduated. CAMS Key Club thanks Nikki for being a part of our family! We're kicking off 2017 by introducing JEREMY DE JESUS as our January Member of the Month! He has attended almost all DCM’s and has participated in several volunteering events. He continues to come to every meeting and truly shows a passion for Key Club and service. Since he transferred to Da Vinci and joined Key Club, he has been such a great addition to our family. We could not have asked for a better member and we hope he continues to serve his community through Key Club. Congrats Jeremy!

The month of January is always very refreshing. A brand new year with new ideals and New Year resolutions. The member of the month for Gardena Key Club, this month, did not need any resolutions to be better with the way he presents himself. CHESTER VIRATA, a freshman at Gardena is a very dedicated member who is always looking to help people out. He is always looking for ways to support people and take care of them. He is one of those freshmen that have a very distinguished role in the club. Many of us here at Gardena Key Club see him as a potential leader, in the future. Congratulations Chester!

ALEX REYES is Hawthorne High Key Club's member of the month for January. Alex Deserves Member of the Month because he is always showing his care for Key Club. Alex is always attending events on time, early to meetings, and is just an overall great person. Alex is a very caring and outgoing person. This is why we have selected him as our Member of the Month for January.

HMSA Jennifer moya

Lawndale Lizandro franco

For the Month of January, HMSA Key Club has selected freshman JENNIFER MOYA. Jennifer has been active in Key Club since the beginning of the year to today. We want to acknowledge her dedication and motivation to remain an active and spirited Key Club member. Jennifer always shows up early to events, for example like early morning or late night runs. Jennifer demonstrates inclusiveness at all events, DCMs, and our weekly club meetings. We would also like to acknowledge her mother, who has also attended and chaperoned all events that Jennifer has gone too. Jennifer’s mother is as enthusiastic about Key Club as Jennifer is and it shows when she volunteers alongside her daughter. Jennifer’s active dedication to Key Club has not gone unnoticed, which is why we are proud to make her our Member of the Month.

This month’s member of the month for January is LIZANDO FRANCO. Lizandro is a good candidate for member of the month because he loves key club with a passion. Every time he sees a board member, he always asks if there are any events or anything he can do for the club. Since he is a junior this year, he will be running for Treasurer! He is hoping to go to every event since there was no events last month.
