MARCH RECAP A MESSAGE FROM OUR ‘15 – ’16 Lt.G Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor CAROLYN CHANG Division 19 North, Welcome to our first Newsletter! Even though we already started our new term about a month ago, I would still like to welcome all members and officers to the 2015-2016 term. As we still get used to transiting into the new term and with new responsibilities, always remember I am always here to help you all. I hope, for those of you who attended, enjoyed District Convention and our first Division Council Meeting during March. I cannot wait to see you all attend more events within your home club and Division 19 North. Please remember to thank your retired officers for everything they have done because, as we can see, they have done a lot throughout the 2014-2015 term. Also, I am BUZZ-ing with excitement to serve with you all this term! Waddling to Serve, Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor, Carolyn Chang

CLUB ARTICLES Da Vinci By Christian Cisneros The month of March has been very exciting and busy for Da Vinci Science Key Club! On Sunday, March 15, a few members volunteered at the L.A Marathon with C.A.M.S Key Club. Members passed out water and cheered on the runners as they made their way through Mile 21. Currently, we are in the midst of fundraising for Pasta for Pennies. Through this fundraiser, we will be obtaining donations that will go towards children and patients who suffer from Leukemia and Lymphoma. Key Clubbers also volunteered at Dana Middle School’s “Rock Around the Block.” They set up equipment and also helped out on the actual day of the event. Overall, the 2015-2016 Key Club board has been very eager to brainstorm and fundraise, and we are very excited for what the new term has to offer!

Hawthorne By: Nicolas Fernandez It was a memorable month for Hawthorne Key-Club this month. We began the month by volunteering at our local memorial center setting up for a small Easter event held for children in the community. DCON was a blast we were able to send 8 members and it feels like club spirit has been greatly boosted. The following Sunday after DCON was the LA Marathon and we had around 20 members participate. It was a great event for the club and inspirational for all members to see the determination that so many marathon runners displayed. The club meeting before spring break our club had a small potluck and an Easter egg hunt. We finished off the meeting with a video recapping everything we did at DCON and then we headed off for spring break.

Gardena By: Tina Duong The month of March has been an interesting time for Gardena Key Club because the new board has begun serving their term. Recently, we had KnowA-Club Week and gained a huge amount of sign-ups. This is very important for us since the majority of our current members are based on seniors, which will not be here next year. Hopefully this event will help us gain potential new key club members. In addition to that, we had the St. Patrick’s Day Candlelight Dinner. Our members successfully served dinner to the participating guests over at the Nakaoka Center. We are working hard in making our club more active.

El Segundo | D19N | Key Club | Lawndale| D19N | Key Clu

El Segundo By: Hannah Christensen-Levy El Segundo Key Club had three events during the month March: Village Runner's St. Patrick's Day Race, the March DCM, and a golf fundraiser at the El Segundo Lakes Golf Course. The first event they attended was the Village Runner's St. Patrick's Day Race which they volunteered at this service project. They had a lot of fun handing out bibs and race packets at this event. The second event was the March DCM. We had many icebreakers and pizza during this DCM. Four people attended from our club. The third event was on the same day as the DCM, which was the Lakes of El Segundo Golf Course Golf Fundraiser and 6 members attended, including the President, Task Coordinators, and Historian. They fundraised $540 towards the Special Olympics.

Lawndale By: Vivian Nguyen In the month of March, some of our members participated in the ice skating fundraiser. To kick off the new term, we tried raising club funds by selling brownie bites at our Sadie Hawkins dance. Following that, we participated in the annual Lawndale Clean Up, where we picked up trash around the city. The new board is eager to serve this brand new term and we are hoping to increase the club membership and volunteer opportunities. We hope to extend our reach to clubs from other schools and show our own members that Key Club is bigger than they had initially thought.

CAMS By: Chris Soo-Hoo For the month of April, CAMS Key Club was able to bring 14 key clubbers to DCON where we received numerous awards including distinguished club, outstanding treasurer, and district tree. We are also proud to announce that we have six bronze members that continuously serve with passion and dedication. During the last day of DCON, CAMS Key Club and Da Vinci Science Key Club joined forces and volunteered together at the LA Marathon. Despite the 90 degree weather, we still spent the day passing out water and Gatorade to the runners. In addition to our newly elected board, we also appointed a few more positions this month: two co-fundraising chairs and a publicity chair with a publicity committee. In the near future, we plan to have a mini officer training conference to teach the new board about each position and to bond with each other.

HMSA | D19N | Key Club | HMSA | D19N | Key Club | HMS

HMSA By: Ricardo Almazan The first two weeks of March, the former HMSA Key Club board primarily focused on training the newer board. However, there were events that took place throughout March. From March 13th-15th, members were given the chance to volunteer in the annual Village Runner St. Patrick’s Day 5K. Volunteers were needed on race day to help fill up water cups, pass out water, t-shirts for late packet pick up, pass out race medals, help with cleanup, and cheer on runners! In addition, 7 members (including former board and new board) were able to attend DCON. The new board learned a lot from attending sessions; this event also hyped board and members alike as they would strive to do their best for D19N and their own club. After DCON, the new board was able to host its very first general meeting with the club. The meeting was a success as the new board was able to collaborate with members in a brand new way. Even though it was late in the year, ice breakers were performed and many looked forward to attending the first divisional council meeting of the term. With the beginning of the new term, the former term was closed by via the HMSA Key Club Banquet. Members celebrated for the former term by enjoying food, slideshows and more all organized by the new board. The club was also very excited to have its Kiwanis adviser, Mr. Harris, and its LTG, Carolyn Chang attend! From this event, the club was also able to gain a good amount of money from donations from the members. In addition to fundraisers, the school held Open House/Club Rush in March. Key Club was able to raise a moderate amount of money selling ice cream sandwiches. The fundraiser was neither a failure or a success, however, we learned that we should try limiting school fundraisers since many other clubs compete for donations as well. In addition, the club already has a variety of service events planned for the future, so here’s to a brand new year of service!

Gerardo Garcia Zelaya Submitted by: Ricardo Almazan The beginning of our term this month has been a very busy transition this month. Planning the banquet and getting ourselves ready for D-CON has taken up a significant amount of time and throughout the confusion and the changes one member has stood out from the rest Gerardo Garcia Zelaya. Gerry has done so much for the club from having outstanding spirit at D-CON to setting up tables and sweeping up for the end of term banquet. Gerry has gone above and beyond and has been a great help to the board and the members. We are very grateful for all the time and energy he has dedicated to Key Club, especially this past month. We couldn’t ask for a more enthusiastic member.
