DIVISION 19 NORTH NEWSLETTER

Letter from the Ltg. Hello Division 19 North!

My name is Hazel Cartagena and it is with great honor to serve as Division 19 North’s Lieutenant Governor for the 2017-2018 term. It has been 3 years since the beginning of my Key Club journey and I am beyond excited to see what we will all accomplish together for the upcoming term. Key Club has provided ineffable experiences and opportunities for me; All which have inspired me to build character and develop leadership skills. In my past years as a member, I served as Division 19 North’s Club Publicist, Division News Editor and Club President. With my past experiences, I have gained tremendous leadership skills that I plan to utilize in order to enhance Division unification. As I created closer bonds with our members and their indomitable spirits, I began to feel more gratification and inspiration to serve with endless passion. My hometown is in Manila, Philippines, and I live in Hawthorne, California. I am currently 17 years old and a junior in Hawthorne Math and Science Academy. Aside from Key Club, I am a member of our school’s Yearbook staff, Environmental Club, Tolerance Club and the head of our Multicultural Festival Committee. In the past three years, I have been working as a hostess for a Mediterranean restaurant. Although most of my spare time is invested into Key Club and other curricular activities, I enjoy interacting with my family and friends, staying active or doing art-related enterprises. Throughout my last year in Key Club, I aim to establish one unified Division and inspire members to serve and lead with great fervor; To embrace Key Club’s Way of Life, develop life-lasting leadership skills, and create unforgettable memories through their valued service. My heart is racing with exhilaration knowing I have the opportunity to work alongside caring leaders and I look forward to meeting you in person; Together with our inexorable hard work and dedication, we will exceed our potentials and truly spread the love and compassion Key Club has established.

Waddling for Service,

Hazel Cartagena Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor 2017-2018

Executive Assistants

HELLO PIRATE PENGUINS!

My name is Mark Andal and I’m waddling with excitement to “make my mark” as your Executive Assistant for the 2017-2018 term! I’m currently a junior attending Da Vinci Science High School, almost a senior (wow - I’m not ready). Throughout my high school life, I’ve fell in love and are passionate for many things - Youth & Government, a mock legislature program, Volleyball, and last, but not least, Key Club! I’ve been involved since Freshman year, and I really joined because I wanted to be involved in a service organization and my cousin told me to join this one so we could see each other. Even though she doesn’t really go to events (LOL), I’m very thankful that she told me to join and I feel very blessed that I made that decision. In Key Club, I’ve served as my club’s editor from 2015-2016, and from 20162017, I served as the Division News Editor. Having prior experience in graphic-type things, I’ve taken this step towards a different type of leadership in Key Club, but I believe that my past experiences both in and out of Key Club have developed my skills. I hope to continue helping out the division in any way that I can, and I hope that everybody in D19N can continue raising our division to new heights. Along those lines, I believe that we can improve inclusiveness, club relations, and member participation. I hope that members can make bonds through inter-club events, take advantage of leadership opportunities that the DLT can provide, and ultimately take initiative. Overall, I’m SUPER HYPED for the upcoming term, and I hope that you are as well!

Executive Assistants WHATS POPPING PIRATE PENGUINS?! Rita Nguyen

My name is and I’m so unbelievably excited to be serving you as one of Division 19 North’s Executive Assistants for the 2017-2018 Key Club Term. I am currently a sophomore at CAMS and last term I had the honor as serving as Division 19 North’s Social Media Coordinator. Serving on the Division Leadership Team last term, gave me the chance to not only see our division evolve but also grow as leader myself. This term I hope to not only expand my passion for service but also make a larger impact on the Division. Many of you know me only through Key Club but have not gotten a chance to learn about the other parts of my life. As previously stated, I am a sophomore at the California Academy of Mathematics and Science. Despite the irony of going to a STEM school, I have always been active in public policy and politics. I am currently on the board of the Los Angeles County High School Democrats, a chapter in the High School Democrats of America. I believe that it is extremely important for the youth to have a voice in what happens in the government because we are the next generation of leaders. I also love to dance, read, take photos and play the ukulele for fun! Music and the arts have always been a huge part of my life. I have played three instruments throughout my life, violin, piccolo and ukulele. When I was younger I attended an arts school for advanced painting but eventually stopped due to my busy schedule. Although it is not a big part of my daily life today, it will always continue to be impactful towards everything I do, including designing graphics for Key Club or making posters for school projects. Although all these things are a part of who I am as a leader, the impact Key Club has had on my life has by far topped the list. I am very excited for the future of this Division and am waddling with joy to see how many BEE-autiful memories we will all make this term.

News Editor

HI-YA, PIRATE PENGUINS!

My name is Mary Ramirez, and it is with great pleasure to say that I am now serving as your Division News Editor for the 2017-2018 Key Club Term. I began high school in love with the whole concept of key club, despite originally believing that it was a club made for keys, however as the years went by, I did indeed find the key to unlock many life changing experiences with the help of this beautiful organization. Alongside with ith my bee-autiful DLT, I am most definitely looking forward to this new term. To begin with, I was born in Manila, Philippines however, I then migrated to Gardena, California at the age of 3. Currently, I am 15 years old and enrolled as a SCIBA (Southern California International Business Academy) sophomore student at Gardena High School. Other than key club, I am a Varsity Tennis Player for the Gardena Tennis Team and also, a youth advocate of High School Task Force (a drug prevention program.) Since I was a child, I have always been an inclusive member at my local church, Saint Anthony of Padua. I am currently serving as a eucharistic and youth minister and have been an altar server since I was 11. Key club has given me many opportunities and experiences to develop as a person. Having the chance to meet new people and create new bonds has built my self esteem and character. Being a distinguished secretary at my home club, Gardena, has developed my leadership skills and enthusiasm. I have obtained an increasing amount of passion for this organization and with it, I plan on helping my division and their AWERRR-SOME key clubbers become devoted to serving with a boundless heart! I am looking forward to the incoming new members that will soon experience the enjoyment of key club! With their spirits rising, character building, people bonding, I am very excited to help our division into becoming a whole ohana. I will be waiting to embrace all of the club’s inspired members and lead them with an eager smile.

Division Secretary AHOY, PIRATE PENGUINS!

My name is Sandy Navarro & no.. i’m not from Texas and, I’m a Pirate Penguin, not a squirrel! I am a proud member of Gardena Key Club, my experience has been unexplainably enchanting, from my very first service event to now, I can definitely say every second, every moment has been extremely priceless. I joined Key Club after seeing how happy my older sisters would come home after service events, best decision I’ve ever made. I spend more time thinking about Key Club and watching Key Club videos online than I’d like to admit, I guess you can say i’m obsessed with Key Club. I cannot begin to express how much value this service organization has added to my life. Last term I served as your Executive Assistant & I am filled with immense joy to be serving you, all over again as... Division Secretary! There is an adventurous term ahead of us, I cannot wait to waddle through it alongside you ! I’m often seen swinging at tennis balls with my racket, or eating because, YUM! Unlike penguins, I’m not a big fan of seafood, and rather prefer pasta and such. I aspire to see every member abide by the four Core Values, and to get lost in their service for others just the way I did! I also aspire to do my best to create an environment where no penguin is ever left behind! I LOVE YOU ALL, thank you for making my life more joyful! Also, feel free to contact me for questions or anything, I don’t bite HAHA ((: DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | MAY 2017 | PAGE 9

Fundraising Coor.

TO MY AMAZING DIVISION AND FAMILY, Hello Pirate Penguins! My name is

Sangeetha Ramachandran, and

I’m super excited and honored to be serving you as your Division Fundraising Coordinator! I’m currently a junior at CAMS. I have been in Key Club for three years, during which I had the privilege to serve my club as one of the Fundraising Chairs in the past term. I have regretted many things in life, but one thing that I’ll never regret is signing myself up for Key Club in my freshman year and attending my first event. Key Club made me realize how much I loved serving my community, and showed me that the small things that are done can really impact someone’s life and even the world. This wondrous organization has become like family to me, and words can’t describe how grateful I am for you guys and the role you’ve played in making my high school years unforgettable. I was born in Chennai, India, and lived there until I was 7 years old. Currently, I live in Torrance, California. Aside from Key Club, I am a member of MESA, ASB, Science Olympiad, Future Medical Leaders, and TED-Ed. I also love to dance; I have been dancing an Indian classical dance for nearly 12 years. I have also been a member of the CAMS Varsity Tennis for to my South Indian heritage by attending a Tamil school. I also love interacting with and helping the past three years, and have been learning to play the violin for two years. I also stay connected people. As your Fundraising Coordinator, I aim to fundraise as much money as possible for the Pediatric Trauma Program and eliMiNaTe. I want to increase attendance by members not just at fundraisers, but also at DCM’s and social events. I want people from different clubs to interact with each other, and learn to love Key Club as much as I love it. I believe that, with all of your help, we can exceed our goals and make all of of dreams possible!

HELLO PIRATE PENGUINS, My name is Katie Chow and I am BEE-yond excited to serve as your Member Recognition Coordinator for the 2017-2018 term! I am excited to meet everyone, and when we do, let’s take lots of pictures. (:

Key Club has shaped who I am today. Beginning in freshman year, I joined Key Club and automatically started to form new bonds with other key clubbers through service events and DCMs. Key Club has given me the opportunity to be inclusive, develop leadership skills, and allowed me to follow my passion of helping others. Serving as HMSA Key Club’s Vice President last term made me realize I wanted to be more involved in Key Club beyond my home club. I am currently a junior and rising senior at HMSA. I am the leader of a Cultural Filipino Dance Group at HMSA who performs annually at the Multicultural Celebration in our school. I am also a member of the Yearbook Staff. Although I have other activities, nothing makes me happier than my love and service for Key Club. You all inspired me to run for this position and I cannot thank you enough for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Member Recognition Coordinator. Head Spirit Coor. TO MY KEY FAMILY,

My name is Catherine Roman and it is such an honor to serve as your Head Spirit Coordinator for the 2017-2018 term. I an currently a junior about to be a senior at DaVinci Science High School, where I had the privilege of being on the spirit team along side Timothy Nachef for the 2016-2017 term. I started off my key club experience my sophomore year from a club fair at my school and it tremendously has impacted my life for the better. I have grown in ways I didn't know possible and I am forever thankful. My key club memories were shaped from being able to create friendships with many of you and I will always hold onto that. Key club made me realize how much I love to give back to make others smile. I dedicate a majority of my time to key club but when I am not I am usually dancing. I've been on a competitive dance team for the past two years and it is something I love to do. When I'm not dancing or doing key club related activities I contribute to my school by being part of the leadership team by organizing blood drives, school dances, fundraisers, etc. Not only this but I am also the team mom for my 8 year old brothers soccer team. I love kids and love being around people in general. Besides wanting to see attendance and more members as a change in our division, I want our members to just be happy and have the best key club experience possible. With the amazing people I have met through key club it has led me to want to give back the same experience I received. This is what motivates me to be the best Spirit Coordinator possible for all of you.

Tech Editor

HEY THERE YOU POPPIN’ PENGUINS,

My name is Sophia Soriano, (but I prefer to be called Pia- pronounced PEE-UH) and I am currently a freshman at California Academy of Mathematics and Science. I am honored to serve as your Division Tech Editor for the 2017-2018 term! My sister forced me to join Key Club, (andyes, it upsets me when people call me “Domo’s little sister.”) It was probably the best thing she could have ever done for me. I do see her as one of my biggest inspirations. The more she talked about Key Club, the more I fell in love with it. Her adoration for serving the community helped thrive my own. Key Club opened my eyes to how important it is to BEE inclusive and go up to people who are alone. It allowed me to build friendships with people outside of my school and I can’t ever imagine a life without my Pirate Penguin buddies. This club gave me so many opportunities and helped me see that I am capable of achieving great things (AND SO ARE ALL OF YOU!) Although it is the only the beginning of my Key Club journey, it’s safe to say that this club changed my life for the better. I was born in Torrance, California and have grown up in Carson for my whole life (so interesting, I know.) When I am not serving the community, I love reading comic books, binge-watching Netflix shows, and spending quality time with my Spicy Soriano Siblings. One goal I want to accomplish this term is recognition! We should never consider any club to be “dominating” a Division. The number of service hours and members does not define a club. Each club tries their hardest to help others and should always be noticed for their immense dedication in serving the community! I cannot wait to capture all the unforgettable moments that will happen this term. With this position, I promise to try and serve all of you to the best of my abilities. Every Pirate Penguin managed to waddle their way into my heart, so please never be afraid to go up to me if you have any questions or just want to talk!

What Is It? Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) is a painful and fatal disease. Bacteria in the soil can infect a mother and her newborn babies, leading to a painful death for the newborns.

How Does it Affect the World? MNT occurs mostly in underserved areas with limited or no health infrastructure. There are currently 170 million women and their babies at risk from the disease in 40 countries in the developing world, in areas that are so hard to reach that they are precluded from even the most basic healthcare.

What Can We Do to Help? Fundraising for MNT elimination can help provide vaccinations for mothers all over the world. Just $1.80 can protect a mother and all her future babies from acquiring MNT. Together, we can eradicate MNT and make it a disease of the past.

CAMS

By : Leo Tafoya

The month of April was spent making the foundation for CAMS Key Club to have successful term! We have finished filling all the spots on our board and completed training each and every one of them. We have also had 2 service projects as well as 2 fundraisers. First we sold snacks, drinks, and club merchandise at a booth at our bazaar fundraiser hosted by our school, where we made a total of $200! All that money will go towards funding for events such as Fall Rally South and District Convention 2018. We were extremely happy with these results, especially because it was our very first fundraiser of the term, but at our next fundraiser we raised the bar even higher. We participated at Kiwanis Takeover where we auctioned off homemade goods to our local Kiwanis club at one of their meetings, and we made a total of $374, which will all go towards our preferred charities, the Pediatric Trauma Program and the ELIMINATE project! As for service, we had members attend both the March of Dimes and the Yallwest Book Festival. At the March of Dimes members actually got to participate in the walk where there were also many other key club divisions in attendance. This was such a great experience for our members to serve and bond with other key clubbers from different areas at the same time! More recently we helped out the Yallwest community book festival, where members helped direct festival goers and manage lines at author signings. This is one of the most memorable events we go to every year, especially since there are always great food trucks there. Within board we have been planning and designing new merchandise for the 2017 to 2018 term and we can’t wait to release it! Even though April was only the first month of the new term we are off to a great start so far and we are very excited to see what CAMS Key Club can achieve for the rest of the term.

With the new term beginning around Easter, Gardena Key Club, without a doubt had an eggcellent start! It all began over Spring Break, when we had four Easter-related events. The first event of the 2017-2018 term was at the Ken Nakaoka Community Center. It was the Senior Easter luncheon, where we packed goodie bags for the elders, as well as serve them their food. Seeing satisfaction and happiness on their faces as they ate their lunch and watched jazz performances, while there was an Easter bunny dancing around the room was enough to make one's day! It's moments like those, that make us so much more in love with service and proud to be able to lend a helping hand in the community. The second event was a two-day egg stuffing party at Freeman Park! No, I'm kidding, it wasn't a party, but it was definitely fun-filled! In preparation for this local park's annual Easter egg hunt, members helped stuff eggs as well as hide them throughout the park. We also helped with the actual egg hunt too, where volunteers assisted kids with arts and crafts, such as dying eggs and weaving paper baskets. On the same day as the Freeman Park egg hunt, Gardena Key Club members also volunteered at the Nakaoka Center for the annual Breakfast with the Easter bunny. Like their fellow penguins at Freeman Park, those at the Breakfast with the Easter bunny event also helped children create festive arts and crafts. Besides the Easter events, Gardena also celebrated the 2016-2017 term with a Pajama themed banquet, where many members attended before opening time to set up and some even staying a bit after the banquet to help clean our beloved community center, where the banquet took place. The last event that we had in April was the Cinco De Mayo Parade, where Gardena Key Club was given the opportunity to walk in the parade, bringing more exposure to our club! We at Gardena look forward to serving with you all for yet another year!

HMSA

For the month of April, HMSA Key Club has been dedicating most of its time for Relay for Life. The club was involved in the creation of about 200 Luminaria bags for the Luminaria bag ceremony at Hawthorne High school. Within Relay for Life, our club also volunteered to help put up signs for Relay for life around the city of Hawthorne during Paint Your Town Purple. All these volunteering events were in preparation for the final Relay for Life event. Our club had 25 members attend this event, totaling over 300 hours in total and we even had Hawthorne Key Club at the event with us. Lastly in term of events, our club also participated in the Division March for Babies. After all these events, our club has mainly been focusing on getting the newly installed board adjusted for the new term. Each individual was taught about their submission and we tried to get each individual accustomed to their position. However, we still need a treasurer for the club and a historian and as a result we will hold a new election for the candidates on May 18, 2017.

For the month of April our members volunteered at a total of four events. As April being the month of celebrating Easter, our members help serve in the annual bunny breakfast that was held in the Hawthorne Memorial Center. They helped serve pancakes and other breakfast items to the community and helped clean up after the event was over. We also assisted at our local library with their book sale. Not many members were able to attend the book sale, as it was on the same day as our DCM although, the members that did go to the event helped organize books and helped sell them to the public. A total of five members attended District Convention and learned many leadership skills for their current situations and future endeavors. They learned how to be a leader in our club and how to keep our club be successful through the new term. As Relay for Life came close, our members help set up posters around our school’s baseball field, showcasing the different sponsors for the charitable event. On the day of Relay our club sold hamburgers, hotdogs, strawberry lemonade and pineapple cucumber juice. Our members walked around the field to help raise awareness for cancer, and some even fundraised $100 each to stay the night and give towards cancer research.

She has attended most of the events so far and brings out her strong spirit with her. She always presents herself as the “mother” of key club. She cares for everyone, even outside of key club. She is a strong leader and knows how to communicate with everyone. Whenever someone mentions the “definition of service” this person is the first person to pop up in my mind. She always attends divisional events when she has the chance to. If you didn’t know, she was our previous executive assistant and she did an amazing job. She also has a very mature mindset and expresses her feelings for key club with great passion. I am happy to say that SANDY NAVARRO is April’s member of the month. Congrats Sandy!!

This is Aien Lazaro he was our vice president for our last term. But not only was he a great vice president he was a great member. The month of his retiring he came to every event dedicated his every saturday or sunday to go to these events He also made sure our new cabinet was able to settle in. He has encourage members to go to more events, and even run for cabinet. He has showed members that they can be both part of cabinet and a great member. So this month is dedicated to him, Aien Lazaro. DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | MAY 2017 | PAGE 35

DIVISION 19 NORTH NEWSLETTER For the month of May, HMSA Key Club is recognizing Russell Aquinde as our member of the month. Russell has shown outstanding dedication to our club by showing up to almost all meetings and attending various events. He is a positive role model and a key leader in the club. The club is always delighted to see him at meetings and events because of his radiating smile that we all love. In specific, Russell was a big help during our recent Relay for Life event as he was there the whole day helping out with whatever was needed. Russell has also shown interest in becoming a future club officer and has shown initiative to play a higher role in the club and we look forward to see him grow as a member and as a leader in our club. Russell has played a huge role in getting other freshmen into our club and we thank him for all the work he does for us.

HMSA

This month’s member of the month is Celeste Ayala. Not only does she go to each and every meeting, she has always been dedicated to key club since the start. Since we haven’t had meetings during AP week, she still wants to get updated with each event we are planning and everything the board does. She brings happiness and her passion for key club every where she goes including outside of school. She is a wonderful member.
