CLUB Articles CAMS

For CAMS Key Club, April was a By Christopher Soo-Hoo great month. At our first event of the month, Kiwanis One Day, we worked together with Gardena Key Club and Gardena Valley Kiwanis to repaint and even out sand at a small local park. Right after Kiwanis One Day, our newly elected board had a miniature Officer Training Conference to familiarize themselves with their own position as well as the other positions on our board. The following week, we volunteered at a food bank in Long Beach where we organized and sorted out cans and various types of food. The week leading up to April 25, we fundraised over $200 for the March of Dimes where we participated in their walk to raise awareness for premature babies! With less than a 24 hour break, we were at our next service event which was a fun-filled day volunteering at a dragon boat racing competition for the blind. It was a packed 10 hours of volunteering: we made booths, helped with registration, assisted the blind, operated the races, worked with guide dogs, and prepared and served food! Lastly, we are in the process of beginning a new fundraiser with Threads for Hope and planning a week of activities for ELIMINATE Week to raise awareness for Project ELIMINATE.

Da Vinci

The month of April was an interesting and some-what busy month for Da By Christian Cisneros Vinci Science Key Club. While spring break interfered with our weekly meetings, we managed to have two energetic and fun-filled meetings. A few of Da Vinci’s Key Clubbers were able to attend the April Division Council Meeting and had a great time making cards for our Key Club advisors and hospitalized children. Also, we are currently wrapping up Pasta for Pennies and will count up how much money we were able to raise for patients who suffer from Lymphoma and Leukemia. In addition, our club has been putting a lot of time and effort into discussing future fundraising events for our club. Overall, the month of April went well for Da Vinci Science Key Club, and we are ready to take on May!

El Segundo By Hannah C. Levy

El Segundo Key Club had two events during the month April: April DCM and Pepperdine Coastal Walk/Run

for Foster Youth. The first event they attended was the April DCM. We had fun icebreakers and made cards for hospitalized children and thank you cards in honor of Kiwanis One Day. Three people attended from our club. The second event was Pepperdine Coastal Walk/Run for Foster Youth and 3 members attended, including the one of the Task Coordinators and Historian. The race was held to raise money to donate to foster homes to help foster children get school supplies so they could be prepared for a public education

Gardena

Although majority of us were either busy with our school work or By Tina Duong preparing for the upcoming AP exams, GHS Key Club continued to excel a high burst of energy throughout each and every event for April. During Easter, we had our own way of “celebrating by assisting the art and crafts area for the children at the Nakaoka Center. We also served coffee, cake, water, and tea alongside with Circle K during the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. In addition to that, we worked hard as we set up over one hundred chairs for the Food Truck Festival over at Rowley Park. It has been very entertaining and tough over at 186th Elementary as we beautified their school garden. However, everything was a success and we will continue to serve our community.

Hawthorne

An amazing month for Hawthorne Key-Club with its Relay for Life By Nicolas Fernandez event. Relay for Life is a 24 hour event where students and adults come together at our high school’s football field and commemorate those we have lost or who are currently fighting cancer. We also proceeded to having a joint event with our school’s Link Crew which allowed us to aid and talk with freshman and about how as upper classmen we have been able to endure through the challenges of high school. We also volunteered at the local Trash for Teaching Sunday May 3rd in Gardena. At Trash for Teaching the few members that attended helped children with building whatever they desired with recycled materials. Volunteers helped packaging and with the assortment of materials meant to be sent out to teachers in need of supplies. The volunteers also helped showing children the ecofriendly conservation of materials.

HMSA

The month of April was a pretty busy month and was a great start for as it By Ricardo Almazan was the first true month of the new board. HMSA Key Club was able to volunteer at many events. From our own city of Hawthorne to much bigger organizations. At the first week of April, the club at the opportunity to volunteer at the City of Hawthorne's Earth Day Festival. Here members helped out setting up canopies, packing gift bags, and more from setup until the event was over. Not many members attended, but many did encourage other members to volunteer at a future event like this. Members were also able to learn helpful tips at conserving resources and protect the environment. April 18th was one of the most productive and exciting days for the members in the month of April. The day held 3 important events: the Coastal/Run Walk for Foster Youth, the monthly DCM, and an all day event called Relay for Life. Surprising many members were eager to attend the Coastal Run from 6 in the morning! It was an enjoyable experience for the club as we cheered on the runners; we helped pass out water and fruit, and helped out at registration. This event was highly significant as it demonstrated the club's members' eagerness for service. That same day, Relay for Life was occurring early on as well. Relay for Life was an event that supports the fight for cancer; the club was able to donate at least $300 dollars for the fight. Not only was money raised, but members volunteered at serving survivors breakfast, setting up recycling bins, and handing out water to those running/walking as well. Overall April was a really impressive month for the club, most of our members woke up at peculiar ours and came home at peculiar hours, simply for service.

Lawndale

In April, our members participated in the DCM’s service project of making By Vivian Nguyen cards for hospitalized children and our Kiwanis advisors. It was a really enjoyable experience for everyone who went. Also, our members showed Key Club spirit by participating in the Lawndale Youth Parade. It’s been a long tradition for Lawndale Key Club to walk around the city and we’re happy to continue to uphold it. Our meeting attendance has increased this month and we’re BEE-ming with excitement! We hope to be more active and have more member participation in the month of May after the stress of AP exams settles down.

Miranda Tran

Gardena Key Club Submitted by: Kathleen Rojas

For the month of April our member of the month is Miranda Tran! Miranda has hopped on our ship and showed us how much Key Club means to her. She's attended Kiwanis One Day where she helped repaint a whole park and attended the Food Truck Festival where she set up tents for others to use and sell their merchandise, she also supervised little kids in the jumpers and made sure each and every kid came out safe. With such an amiable personality Miranda always brings smiles to our members being one of two juniors we have in our club. As months pass we believe Miranda will grow as a Key Clubber and show how she serves at events, congrats Miranda!

Katie Chow

HMSA Key Club Submitted by: Ashley Jimenez

Someone who has stood out this month and has dedicated their time to going to all events this past month is Katie Chow. This freshman has shown incredible dedication to the club from Earth day to Relay for life. Her enthusiasm for the club is unwavering and she even expressed interest in becoming an officer next term. We hope she continues to bring her joy to Key Club and participate in events. Even with AP’s approaching she still manages to find time for Key Club. We want to thank Katie for all her amazing service this month. DIVISION 19 NEWSLETTER |JUNE 2015 | PAGE 19

Reema Shinh

Da Vinci Science Key Club

Submitted by: David Lopez Reema is an active member who is constantly showing up to meetings and is always providing the board members with input on what can be improved and on what is going well in the club. She is attending more volunteering events and represents our club in positive way. Not only does she care about improving the club, she also thinks about ways to raise funds for our club. She came up with a way to raise funds for our club through recycling and was not scared to talk about it with the board members. The fundraiser will be implemented sometime during the school year! Reema is only a sophomore, yet she has shown, and continues to show, potential. We know that Reema will help Da Vinci Science Key Club grow as a club and will continue to make a positive impact on those around her.

El Segundo Key Club

Submitted by: Hannah C. Levy El Segundo’s April Member of the Month is Alexandra Macias. Alexandra attends El Segundo High School as a sophomore and has shown character building through stepping out of her comfort zone and volunteering at our one event this month and the April DCM. From doing this, Alexandra has shown that she is a leader here to inspire her other members to also come out of their shells, help build a stronger 19 North ohana, and help organizations raise the funds they need for their cause. As Task Coordinator, to attend the events that Alexandra finds is a key duty, which she has proved yet again by attending the race. Good job Alexandra! This term will be a great term because of your dedication to service.
