Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor Christopher Soo-Hoo
Division 19 North, Welcome to the 2016-2017 term! I am ecstatic to serve you all alongside the club officers. This division has a huge amount of potential, and I cannot wait to see it expand over the next twelve months! We have so much to show the community from our growing passion for service to our fundraisers that would save lives of thousands to our endless amount of spirit which is ready to face others at future events! I am also very excited to see our growth as leaders and people. To current officers, this term will be filled with learning that will enrich your leadership skills, communication skills, organization skills, and much more! And to members, I hope this term inspires you to pursue further opportunities within Key Club. With the work and service we put into this club, we will all experience the positive change within ourselves and the uplifting change we are making in the community. Lastly, I would like to welcome two new clubs of Division 19 North: Santa Monica High School Key Club and Palisades High School Key Club. I cannot wait to expand our Pirate Penguin ohana as they will be joining us at future division events. This term is off to a great start! I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you better, and I hope to see you all at the May OTC and DCM where there will be a special treat! Waddling with a smile, Christopher Soo-Hoo

CLUB ARTICLES CAMS By Christopher Soo-Hoo The month of March was an exciting month for CAMS. We started off the month at the Insane Inflatable 5K in Long Beach where we ensured that the race was running smoothly and that the inflatable track was safe for runners. The next week, we volunteered at the Torrance Middle School Math Olympiad competition where we set up the event room, proctored the test, helped with lunch, graded papers, and helped clean up. The day of the division banquet, CAMS teamed up with Gardena Key Club and volunteered at the Nakaoka’s annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny. Lastly, during our Spring Break, we went to the Happy Hats for Kids event where we created gifts for unfortunate children. During March, CAMS Key Club also completed our elections for the upcoming term and hosted our annual training conference to prepare them for the future. We are excited to attend District Convention and head into the next term!

CLUB ARTICLES Da Vinci By Christian Cisneros The month of March has been a very exciting and bittersweet one for Da Vinci Science Key Club! Almost-retired Key Club officers have been training the new board in preparation for the new 2016-2017 term by meeting with them after-school, Skyping them, and contacting them about any questions and concerns. At the beginning of the month, members volunteered at the FroYo Run in Griffith Park and at One Incredible Family’s Easter Basket-Making event where members made Easter Baskets out of Chinese take-out boxes for children whose families are affected by illnesses and/or poverty. Interact Club invited Key Club members to donate their hair at their Hair-cut-athon in Redondo Beach! Historian-Elect, Julia Zaldivar, donated one foot of her hair to the cause, and in total, Interact Club was able to raise 18 of hair! On Saturday, March 28th, Da Vinci had 11 members attend the End of the Year Banquet, and many members and officers were recognized for their outstanding dedication, passion, and service to the Division and community. To wrap up this month and the start of April, we are also hosting Pennies for Patients, which is a fundraiser where the entire school raise donations for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. So far, we have raised around $22.00 dollars, and we hope to continue raising more! Da Vinci Science is also preparing to volunteer at many more future events, such as the Color Run, Tour de Pier, and the Inglewood Science Center Science Fair! Kalyn Atkinson, the President-Elect, is already contacting organizations and businesses to hold future fundraisers, which is very exciting and shows just how eager she is to start off strong! Overall, Da Vinci Science Key Club is ending the last month of the term with passion, service, and spirit, and we are ready to see what the new term has in store for the new officers!

CLUB ARTICLES El Segundo By Hannah C. Levy For the month of March our attendance at events was sporadic and resulted in a lack of visuals for the month henceforth I have 0 to submit. I sincerely apologize for this period of decreased participation. Additionally, here is the Club Recap for the month of March: El Segundo Club Recap- March 2016 For the month of March, El Segundo Key Club strengthened the bond within the club through participation in 2 events in the community and 2 events for the commencement of the term and future of the club. The first event of the month we had was Friends of the LAX Dunes where our members help members of Heal the Bay remove invasive plant species from the hillside of Playa del Rey to help the area repopulate with plants that attract blue butterflies- the animal of El Segundo. Then, we held club elections for two weeks to determine the 2016-2017 board. Elections brought new energy into the club board and I have faith that our club will grow in both members and participation. The next service project of the month was with Tree Musketeers where our members watered and cared for the trees planted on Arbor Day. To end the month and the term, 7 members attended Banquet and some received recognition for hours served and others received distinguished awards as officers. It was a pleasure to serve as El Segundo Key Club's President for the 2015-2016 term and I only see growth from here for the future. Until we meet again, Hannah Christensen-Levy

CLUB ARTICLES Gardena By Tina Duong After DCON, our term is finally over. Reflecting on this term, serving as president had been such a wonderful opportunity. I was exposed with experiences that I will never forget and will be implementing this growth for future references. During this month, we had a busy week- especially during our Spring Break. Serving our community at 186th Elementary, we cleaned up after the Talent Show and worked together during a Service Project where we packed canned food and goods for families, made our own mud pies, and relocated the dirt to create a pathway for the cactuses section of the garden. March was also the season where easter theme events flourished such as the events over at the Nakaoka Center and Freeman Park. For Freeman Park key clubbers went on various days to stuff as much plastic eggs as they can with candy. During their program, our member Ashley Rojas dressed up in a rabbit costume. It was really interesting and cute as she was entertaining the children with her hops. During the same time, at the Nakaoka, it was called “Breakfast with the Easter Bunny” and our focus was on the art and crafts area. Our key clubbers were working with the children who were interested in dying colorful eggs in blue, red, and etc. Another event at the Nakaoka Center was the Gardena Luncheon- an interclub event with Circle K CSUDH. We were serving senior citizens with water, coffee, and tea. With all of these events, it couldn’t have been done without our key clubbers. I am very thankful for my key clubbers as they represent Gardena with great presence. We’re Gardena Key Club waddling for service!

CLUB ARTICLES HMSA By Sophia Campos The month of March was a humbling experience for HMSA. It was the last month of the current board and the division is ready and set for DCON (we wish all the best). The month was strictly oriented to the events in the future such as the Hollywood Half Marathon, Relay for Life, and more. Members still remain eager to do service (and receive them service hours) as proven by many of our club's efforts to help out at Relay for Life. Every year, HMSA Key Club volunteers at Relay for Life with anything they can. Although the event is not until a couple weeks away, the members are making luminaria bags for the event and attending weekly Relay meetings to inform other members. Many members have already made more than 20 luminaria bags. Aside from Relay for Life, members were also able to attend the division banquet. They enjoyed the event quite well. Many were able to farewell the current boards and look forward to a new a term. The club looks forward to the new and fresh ideas a new board and term have to offer. We are all thankful for the club, and the service we were able to encourage.

CLUB ARTICLES Hawthorne By Nico Fernandez Hawthorne recap article. For this month at Hawthorne we assisted with a local Easter event held at the community center. A handful of our members attended the event. We were split into various groups ranging from helping with serving food and spending times with the kids. We helped serve food to the families that came to the event with their kids. We also helped hide eggs and facilitate an Easter egg hunt. Before the Easter egg hunt I had a couple of the members join me dancing with the kids. We danced with the kids as a hired musician played songs for them and had people dressed up as the Easter bunny arrive to the event. After the kids left we cleaned the rooms and were satisfied to have spent a day full of fun filled service. The kids left happy and the families happy that they were fed.

CLUB ARTICLES Lawndale By Vivian Nguyen As the term comes to a close, Lawndale Key Club focused on making the most out of March. We started off with planting trees along Memory Row for the Tree Musketeer's Arbor Day event. Then, we had a board meeting of the minds – the old and new board met together to strengthen bonds and planned the transition of responsibilities for the next term. We had a Popcornopolis fundraiser to fund senior medals and next year's term. In total, we raised $1,431 and will keep 50% of it! We also participated in the Lawndale Clean Up, where we picked up trash around the city. Later that day, members got to redirect traffic at an Arts and Crafts for Disabled event. Finally, our new board got to try their hand at handling a fundraiser. We sold churros and ice cream floats during the Sadie Hawkins Dance right before spring break. Altogether, this term had its ups and downs, but was still a stepping stone towards improvement nonetheless. As mentioned time and time again, I have full confidence in the upcoming board's capabilities to take Lawndale Key Club to even greater heights.

CLUB ARTICLES Leuzinger By Diana Nguyen For the month of March, Leuzinger Key Club participated in various events that included helping with an Easter egg hunt and cleaning up our community. In the beginning of the month, Leuzinger Key Club volunteered at an art event at Leuzinger High School where we escorted parents to different events within our school campus. Later in the month, we had an exciting time volunteering at the Bunny a breakfast at the Hawthorne Teen Center where we helped serve breakfast to families and also helped hide eggs for the Easter egg hunt. The following week we went to the Lawndale Clean Up where we walked around the streets of Lawndale and picked up any trash there was. Lastly, at the end of the month, board members attended the March DCM/ End of the Year Banquet and had an exciting time seeing other Key Clubbers again before the next term.

CAMS Sangeetha Ramachandran Member of the Month: Sangeetha Ramachandran Drum roll please! CAMS Key Club is so happy to announce that our Member of the Month is Sangeetha Ramachandran. Sangeetha has such a youthful spirit wherever she goes! Her attendance at club meetings (as well as service events) is superb and I always cherish the moments spent with her. She gets so excited to help out. I think it’s impossible for her to NOT be excited about a Key Club event. In March, she chaired an event and some breakfast with the Easter Bunny! She is such an open person as well! At DCMs I’ve seen her go around to greet so many new people. I mean who can refuse her and her lovely personality! I’ll admit that Sangeetha was a pretty shy and quiet member at first, but boy am I proud to say she has grown out of her shell! Now she is never scared to shout how proud she is to be a Pirate Penguin! I really can’t wait to see what the future has in store for her!

Linette Vidauri For the month of March we found that Linette was our most active member and we congratulate her for her hard work. Linette has just joined Key Club this year and already she shows immense potential. Even when it looked like none of her friends were going to attend an event with her, Linette still pushed through and attend the service event knowing that her friends weren’t going. This shows how committed and how reliable Linette is when she says she will do something, she sets her mind to it and pushes through. We are so proud of Linette and we are glad to see when members have such a positive attitude and vibe in our club. Linette is very deserving of this Member of the Month title and we hope to see more of her as the rest of the year progresses.

Kathleen Rojas Hey penguins well I'm closing of my last submission by rewarding myself for the month of March. Not only has this club shaped me into the person I am but it has helped gained the experience to BEE-come a leader and inspire others to volunteer with passion. I have gotten this recognition multiple times but I never had the opportunity to take it and now here I am writing about myself. This has only shown that my hard work and dedication for this organization has increased ever since I was a member and ran for Vice President. These experiences are some things I will never take forge granted and would thank everyone who has helped me get to where I am in my Key Club journey. Now I'm giving back by having the honors to serve as your President for the 2016-2017 term and will give it my all to serve to my fullest potential. It was a ride to get where I am but I will waddle to more success with the support of my club and division. I'm very humbled to be recognized for my hard work and commitment to the club that has given me many opportunities that has inspired others in my club which has been an accomplishment for myself. My spirit for this club will only ever keep growing for Key Club and I can't wait to see what my last year being in Key Club has in store for me.

Hazel Cartagena This month the member that really stood out was Hazel Cartegena. Can we please just tell her how amazing she is one more time? Hazel goes above and beyond for key Club and is always very enthusiastic and spirited. This month Hazel was very active in the planning of Relay for Life, a 24-hour event to promote a cure for cancer. Hazel is always a big help when it comes to member recruitment. He encourages everyone he meets to join Key Club and is very friendly and helpful with freshmen and new members. She is an example of what it looks like to love service and serving your community. Hazel is an exemplary member and she really works hard to make sure our members feel comfortable and included. We had to give her a shout out this month! She deserves a huge thank you for all he has done for the club, we know she’ll be an excellent President next term!
