Hello Division 19 North, Thank you to all of you who attended the joint Officer Training Conference and June DCM! Don’t forget to utilize the new skills that you learned at the Training Conference to provide all of us the best Key Club experience possible! This is crucial for our success as a division. As we are all out on summer vacation now, I hope you all take this time to relax! You deserve it! But don’t forget to keep service in the back of our minds! Soon we will start preparing for Fally Rally South coming up in November, so make sure to come out to our July DCM on July 16th to learn about what we will be starting! I am so proud of the progress we are seeing during the first few months together, and I cannot wait to see what is ahead of us!

PIRATE PENGUINS

May was such an exhilarating month for CAMS Key Club. Even with final exams and projects, our amazing Key Clubbers still decided to come out and volunteer! In fact, we had 2 service projects almost each week. The first week of May we went all the way to Santa Monica to help volunteer with the Yallwest Book Festival. Here, we helped set up and register visitors. We also participated in an interclub project with Gardena Key Club, in which we set up raffles and food at the local Fishing Derby. The following week of May, many of the members bonded with each other as we overcame the heat at Manhattan Beach Tour de Pier. It was really amazing considering that we saw a handful of celebrities, such as Gene Simmons and Steve Nash, help raise funds towards the fight against cancer. That same week CAMS Key Club attended both the May DCM and Color Run. So many people had fun at both events. At Color Run, for instance, we had the opportunity to bond with the Seals (again)! The next day, we cheered on swimmers of the Special Olympics alongside the Ninjas! During the last week of May, we helped register bikes for parking at an event recommended by our advisor, Ms. Janet Lewis. And the next day, a few members helped direct runners at the Walk for Warriors. You can say May was a month filled with service and bonding! Despite AP testing and school events conflicting with our meetings, we were still fortunate to host a few! So much laughter filled the air with event recaps as well as icebreakers. We also wrapped up our ELIMINATE Project fundraiser and have had a great start selling Threads of Hope for impoverished families in the Philippines. Additionally, we’ve been planning our first summer social and fundraisers, such as a Garage Sale! CAMS Key Club is so ready to serve (and have fun) during these next few months of summer vacation! - Aileen Maranan

May has been a very important month for Da Vinci because not only did we help raise awareness for brain cancer through the Korey Foundation at Tour De Pier where we passed out and put on fake tattoos for the those competing in the marathon or for the supporters, but we were also proud to know that two of our members, Christian Cisneros and Mark Andal, are on the DLT! In addition, we had around 10 members attend the May DCM where we practiced cheers and participated in the eLEMONate challenge with the rest of the division. As school starts to come to a close and summer started, we are excited to see what is to come for our club in June! - Kalyn Atkinson | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | JULY 2016 | PAGE 13

This month we continued our volunteering with the Tree Musketeers organization by joining them in both a regular Saturday maintenance event and their Earth Day Celebration event. We also continued our collaboration with Conquer our Run and helped pass out goody bags, medals, and record times of runners at our local beach. Between volunteering events we planned for one of our biggest annual fundraisers, selling snow cones at our city’s Hometown Fair. Since it was Eliminate week earlier this month, we also discussed the Eliminate Project and how we can do more to support it. - Zoe Forest | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | JULY 2016 | PAGE 15

For the month of May, Gardena Key Club was hard at work as we come to the end of the school year, but that does not mean the service stops for us. To start this busy month off we had a "Kiwanis Fishing Derby" at Alondra Park, which was a joint event with CAMS Key Club and there we helped prepare lunch for the participants that were fishing and handed out tickets for fishing gear. That same day members went to "Rowley Parks Pitch and Run" where members picked up all the balls, took down signs and baseball posters, put equipment away, and took the tables inside the Park's building. Then we volunteered at our local Elementary School for their annual "Owl Awards Night," here we had members run several concession stands, hand out erasers to the kids receiving awards, sort out worksheets, and even selling succulents. With a total of 15 members we were able to help by doing many tasks all at once even help clean up at the end. The beginning of June we had a set up day for a "Health & Safety Fair" the following day. Members helped set up tables, chair, and finish with sorting out worksheets that will be given in the summer for the kids attending the Elementary School. Finally the day of the "Health & Safety Fair" came and we had our very own Pie in the Face booth. We had people that attended the fair pie our lovely members for two dollars throughout the day. 5 hours of endless pies being thrown at members and making a total of $52 for Project Eliminate, we couldn't be any more proud saving 28 lives with the amount we raised. Not only did we have a busy month full of service but member attendance has increased drastically. We have over a dozen of dedicated penguins attend these events as they serve their community with a smile on their faces. - Kathleen Rojas

During this month of May, there were not many events. Since it was one of the last months of school it was very difficult to find events. We had a total of two events. First we had the 5K run at our school on May 7. Here our members not only cheered on the participants but also help set up and do many different jobs throughout the run. The second event was on May 26, which was a Family BBQ that Kiwanis hosted. This event took place at the Hawthorne memorial center. Our members helped set up as well as assist the families who attended. They also had a chance to enjoy the delicious barbeque that was there. This was along our usual meetings every week. - Genesis Granados PAGE 18 | JULY 2016 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |

PIRATE PENGUINS K-9 Dinner Event This event was hosted by our Kiwanis members. We all helped serving food, making salad and cutting out cake. We really enjoyed this event and meeting all the cops and dogs that help make our community safe. There were also other volunteers from other clubs and school which made us meet new people.

Hawthorne 5-K Run The 5-K Run was event hosted in our high school which meant a lot of our members were able to go. Our members encouraged the runners to keep on going and gave out water. We help set up race track before the race started and we help cleaned up after the race.

HMSA key club kept a busy schedule for the month of May. The month started off with creating multicultural decorations which took up the majority of the month. Members volunteered every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until the actual event. On May 7th, we kicked it off with a Hawthorne Annual Run/Walk despite the rainy weather. Here, members helped with setup and clean up for the race and some participated in the event as well. On the week of multicultural, it was very hectic for test takers. However, members were able to execute their time and help everyday on the week of the multicultural event. They designed the whole campus, making it bright and colorful. It took about 3 months of work into one night. At the end of the night, members stayed to help with cleanup for the event. With finals approaching, HMSA Key Club did not have any events on the last week of school to give our member a rest and study well. - Hazel Cartagena PAGE 20 | JULY 2016 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |

For the month of May, we had two events in total. For our first event, we participated in Tour de Pier at Manhattan Beach. At this event, many families came out to support the ones that fell victim to cancer by donating to different charities at the event as well as participating in bike riding. We helped by passing out water bottles and towels to the bikers during the event. We also had a “champagne” party for those students who are in special ed. This was hosted by friendship circle at our school, but we waddled ourselves in to help out. We helped set up tables, snacks, and filled up glasses of apple cider. After the party, the students went on to prom taking a limousine that was provided by friendship circle. All in all, both events were a huge success. We also participated in this month’s DCM at Alondra Park. We had eight members participate at the event. Everyone had a wonderful time meeting different Key Club members as well as playing the different icebreakers and activities. Hopefully we can get more people to attend June’s DCM! - Daniel Pajulas PAGE 22 | JULY 2016 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |

Jared Keating Jared Keating is our member of the month! He has gone to multiple Key Club events including Yallwest, Gardena Fishing Derby, Tour de Pier, and Fiesta Hermosa Bike Corral! His presence is always a bonus to everyone at these events, because he tries his absolute best to follow the core values of inclusiveness! Jared is always on his feet whenever any member needs his assistance. He has been incredibly active since the beginning of the term and we know he will continue to strive with the club. His happy participation in our ice breakers always lights up the room. Jared loves Key Club for the service which is why we are very excited to give him the Member of the Month for May!

Da Vinci Eric Lopez It has definitely been a chill year for Da Vinci Science Key Club, especially with Eric. He may be a freshman, but this has not stopped him from constantly participating and growing. Over the course of the school year, Eric has really grown in terms of stepping out of his comfort zone and meeting new people. As a freshman, it isn't easy putting yourself out there and meeting new people. However, Eric has really put in a lot of effort into not only his volunteer work, but also his social skills. We are so proud of the progress that he has made this year and can't wait to see what he will do next year!

Gardena Cory Suzuki The month of May has probably been one of the busiest months for Gardena Key Club. Even with all the events piling up, Cory Suzuki did not fail to arrive almost every single one. Anyone who knows Cory Suzuki knows that without a doubt he is one of the most hardworking key clubbers. With his combination of his outgoing personality and incredible wit he never fails to keep the livelihood of each event at its best. This month a Key Clubber who stood out to us is Eduardo Luna. Currently a freshman, Eduardo consistently makes time to attend every event as well as DCM’s and other Division events. He is always enthusiastic at events, and you can always trust him to make you smile. You can always count on him to be at an event with his dedication and punctuality. For a freshman, we find admiration in his continuous dedication to Key Club, while at the same time adjusting to the new hardships of entering high school. As this school year comes to an end, Eduardo still makes time for Key Club and we wish him all the best sophomore year.

Lawndale Steven Soto This month I want to recognize a member that has gone to every service event we put out. He not only attended all the service events, but he also went to this month DCM ready to meet new people and actively participate in all the ice breakers. As VP I am very proud to say he is one of the little members that are very dedicated to key club. The member I want to recognize is Steven Soto.
