L-O Pirate Penguins of Division

19 North!

I hope you all have been having a fantastic summer vacation. Thank you for everyone who attended our June Officer Training CAMPference with Division 19 South. It is with great honor to serve the community with hard-working, diligent student leaders like you.

Our June DCM/OTC was a huge success with the training sessions, fundraisers and service project! It was truly intriguing to see Division 19 North and South work together. I hope you all were able to meet someone new and learn something new to bring back and share with your home club. Please continue that motivation and drive for service and encourage your friends to join and begin their Key Club “Journey.” As the new school year approaches, this is your perfect chance to host a club rush and welcome incoming and returning members to our Pirate Penguin Ohana. Contact your home club’s president for assistance. Remember that members are the KEY players, and you have the power to change our community. Keep in touch with Division you serve by subscribing to our New YouTube channel, Division 19 North, headed by our Tech Editor, Sophia Soriano. We will be posting monthly video updates, so stay tuned! Although the end of summer is near, we still have one month left! Continue to attend service events, assist with projects, and give a helping hand.

Waddling with love and service,

Hazel Cartagena Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor 2017-2018

Wow, a DCM...BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!! The DCM and OTC was an event of excitement and a great bonding time with our sister division, D19S. Not only were we able to meet our fellow bunnies and penguins, there were many presentations and skits that helped me learn more about Key Club and the many important positions we can hold! It sure was an amazing day to have fun while gaining tips and advice to do my job right. In addition to the interesting games and sessions, the service event that was hosted was a blast! Making those cards for hospitalized children was fun and heartwarming. This DCM+OTC was DEFINITELY worth it!

-Sandra Kim, Gardena Secretary

PSSSSST! Can you try finding my fellow penguin scouts? They seem to be scattered everywhere in the next page. Count as many scouts as you find and report it to the Division News Editor, Mary Ramirez, by messaging her on Facebook! Contact her as soon as possible for a prize at the AUGUST DCM!

Firstly, I want to thank both LTG form D19N and D19 S and their DLT’s for putting together such an amazing event. OTC was an extremely enriching and insightful and fun experience. I loved the UP theme and how our DLT dressed for the event; it really shows the lengths that our Division would go to make every event special and unforgettable. I had a lot of fun during OTC because I met so many amazing people from both D19S and D19N who are extremely funny and very spirited. It was a nice change of pace for me in the month of June to be with so many Key Clubbers all at once. OTC was a perfect blend of fun and knowledge and I am sad this will be my last OTC. The DCM afterward really put everything into perspective and how much progress we are making as a division. It was endearing to see how much we have accomplished as a division so early on into our term. I really do BEElieve in this entire division and all the good that we do serve not only our communities but the entire world. To end off the entire day, seeing our previous two LTGs was a nice walk memory lane and really brought back wonderful memories of our division. I am really happy with the turnout of OTC and the DCM and I am so excited for RTC.

The month of June was filled with unBEEtable success for CAMS Key Club. To kick off the month, CAMS KC volunteered at the Special Olympics Summer Games where volunteers helped setup breakfast for the athletes and cheered them on later in the day. A total of 19 members showed up throughout the day and we served a total of 99 hours as a club from that event alone! Next our very own Sophia Soriano joined Gardena Key Club at the Alzheimer's Resource Fair and the JCI Fuji Matsuri Festival. We are so proud of Sophia to continue growing such a strong relationship with other clubs in the division! At Redondo Beach triathalon, Vice-President Joshua Fajardo brought along some members at 5:00 AM to help set up the course and watch the racers. A very special event for the term was our Division Officer Training Conference with Division 19 South. The officers and members that attended learned plenty about their respective positions and future positions they may hold. The Pirate Penguins and Beastie Bunnies seemed closer than ever before, at at the DCM afterwards, we had a total of 17 members in attendance! Near the end of wonderful June were the SoCal Food Drive and Under the Bridges and on the Streets. At the SoCal Food Drive many members attended and even got to be on live television and at Under the Bridges and on the Streets, members packed food and clothing to be delivered to nearby homeless people sleeping on the streets. Finally, our board is happy to announce that Cindy Nguyen is our Member of the Month for June! She has shown such dedication to service, and always pairing it with a smile. We look forward to see her continue to blossom as a Key Clubber.

The month of June marked the beginning of summer for Da Vinci Key Club. Our main event for the month was Officer Training CAMPference where members learned of the duties and possibilities of Key Club in addition to meeting members from Division 19 South. We, also, ordered our Da Vinci Key Club sweatshirts which we should be able to distribute soon! Lastly, we have been planning service events for the month of July such as “Lunches with Love where we will be creating lunches for the homeless.

June is the sixth month of a year. What do you get when you turn the number ) upside down? 9? NINE. That is the number of events that Gardena pirate penguins ed at in the month of June! Coincidence? I think not. The month of June was a quite BEE-sy one for Gardena Key Club. We started off month by helping set up for 186th St. Elementary School's 25th Annual Health and Safety where members brought out tables, plants, and created signs in preparation for the ual fair the following day. At the health and safety fair, members helped sell at 186th St. mentary School's concession stand, as well as sell shaved ice, where our club made a total 35! On June 10, 2017, Gardena KC served at the city of Gardena's Alzheimer's and or Citizens Resource Fair at Mas Fukai Park. At this fair, members sold at the concession d and as silly as it sounds, we watched the bouncy houses to make sure kids were playing ly. Let's not forget about the tea event at the Nakoka Community Center on the same where members helped serve food and tea. club also helped set up for the Japanese Cultural Institute Fuji Matsuri Festival on four erent days, as well as helped cleaned after the festival. On June 22, 2017, the city of Gardena had a retirement party for Mitch Lansdell, city manager. Here, members served food to the guests. On June 23, 2017, Gardena Key Club helped at the 6th Annual Feed SoCal event ABC 7 alongside with members from CAMS Key Club. On June 24, 2017, Maxine Waters held a town hall meeting at the Nakaoka mmunity Center, where Gardena KC members worked at the VIP parking lot, making sure e were no uninvited guests present. To end the day, we helped serve ice cream at the aoka Community Center at the Concert on the Lawn/ Ice Cream Social event.

In the month of June, HMSA Key Club had two different events: mosa Beach Safety Fair and the Ballona Wetlands. During the Safety Fair, mbers helped set up tents and basic setup. Members learned about many jects like the dangers of texting and driving, the importance of car seats for ldren and the proper way to use a seatbelt. This event was not only fun, but mbers learned a lot from the various booths about avoidable dangers. With other event, the Ballona Wetlands event, members helped clean up trash t threatened wildlife in the Wetlands and they got to bird watch; this event s a nice mix of work and fun. The last event in June was the Officer Training nference which was extremely insightful to all our members on the different sitions in Key Club. The various workshops were extremely helpful in teaching members how to become leaders and giving them insight into the various sitions they may want to run for in the future. Aside from the various events we d, our club is currently focusing on fundraising opportunities, specifically with . We are currently creating a large order of leis in order to sell at our next M and eventually RTC and Fally Rally. Our club is also preparing for our ool’s club rush and the beginning of the school year as the time approaches.

It has been a service-filled summer for CAMS Key Club so far, and we would love to recognize Cindy Nguyen as our member of the month for June! Though she is only an incoming sophomore, Cindy has already shown great devotion to the club by happily attending service events, and coming to the meetings we had throughout the school year! During the month of June, she has served her community by attending events such as the SoCal Food Drive and the Redondo Beach Triathlon! Her humble, kind personality gives a positive atmosphere to any event she goes to! Cindy definitely well demonstrates the four core values of Key Club wherever she goes, and we’re excited to see where service will take her. Thank you, Cindy, forbeing an amazing member of CAMS Key Club, and more importantly, our Ohana!

Many of our members have shown FUN-tastic qualities that we value in Key Club. However, one of our members really stood out to us this month. This member has outstanding participation in both meetings and service events! When she shows up at an event, she is always prepared to give 150%! She has also been attending division events such as the recent Officer Training Conference and DCM! The DVS Key Club board is so proud of Natalia Zeledon for the amazing qualities she adds to our club! Go Natalia!

Hey there KEY-uties!! Hehe… get it. Moving on… for the month of June, I have noticed one outstanding member that deserves to June’s member of the month. When she goes to events she always comes with a positive attitude. She knows how to take charge when necessary and knows how to solve problems as fast as you can say the word Mississippi. This young woman is very mature and is an excellent representation of a role model. She tries her best to make sure no one feels excluded and separated for everyone else. She gets everyone’s attention when needed and speaks as clearly as possible. She has a very unique personality that everyone loves. She is very reliable and trustworthy, you can ask her to do something and she will do it for you. The more she progresses in Key Club, the better she becomes as a leader. Lauren Nguyen makes every moment count, so that you and her can cherish that moment forever.

This month we have chosen Ivan Medina, a long-standing and very dedicated member of Key Club. As a member, Ivan has always tried to do his hardest to commit time to service and helping others. He attends most of the available events for our club and has displayed a willingness to do hard work. However, that doesn’t mean he sacrificed having fun along the way. In fact, his overall positive and happy attitude is part of the reason why he has been brought to attention. He always shows up to meetings happy, full of energy, and eager to participate. Furthermore, he has often gotten others join in on activities and have caused them to become more active. These personality traits and his overall demeanor are what made him a successful Snapper in the past. However, focusing on this term, those same qualities are what have made him a very welcome face within the club. His dedication to the club while also brightening the overall atmosphere are what have earned him the title of this month’s Member of the Month.

For the month of June, our member of the month is Britney Lopez. Britney has been apart of Key Club for 2 years now and she has always been very active in our meetings and events throughout this term. She is always in a great mood when involved with key club and is always very approachable and fun to talk to. She is enthusiastic when it comes to participating in events and always puts in her best effort as a member. Britney can be viewed as a great example of what Key Club member should be modeled after. We think that she deserves more recognition but all we can give is our appreciation for her involvement.

“UNCONDITIONA

Ever since I joined key club, I have definitely attended lots of service events. These events can start when it's 5 in the morning, and pirate penguins still serve their communities with smiles on their faces! It's really inspiring to see this passion in working towards a common goal. More than anything, I think it's cool that people make friends from other divisions and regions because of things like DCON or fall rally no matter where they are from. The wholehearted bonds I have made with key club are definitely unshakable.

When fall rally comes around or even DCON, you make friends from far off places and these friendships last a lifetime.
