HELLO PIRATE PENGUINS,

01 | DNE’S MESSAGE

The long-awaited summer is finally amongst us! I’m sure many of us are finishing school or have already finished, but that doesn’t mean our dedication and passion for service ends with the last classwork assignment or with that last ring of the bell. In fact, we should be continuing to serve our homes, schools, and communities, even after we graduate from high school. Service is a lifelong experience, so no matter where you find yourself this summer, whether it’s in a country on the other side of the world or in the comfort of your own home, always remember that small acts of service can go a long way. Thank you to those of you who came out to the EliMay-Nate DCM. It was a huge success with over 40 members in attendance and at least $120 raised for The Eliminate Project! But what exactly did we all raise money and awareness for? Through this project, the Kiwanis family, UNICEF, and you guys, Key Club members, have been able to save and protect women and their future babies from maternal & neonatal tetanus (MNT). To date, MNT has been successfully eliminated from 25 countries in the world! The acts of spreading the word about this project on social media to participating in the E-lemon-ate Challenge at the DCM have all been great contributions to the overall fight against MNT. THANK YOU :)

FROM YOUR DIVISION NEWS EDITOR,

ALISA NAGASHIMA

02 | LETTER FROM THE LTG

WHAT’S WADDLING DIVISION 19 NORTH,

To start things off, thank you everyone that attended the May “Eli-May-Nate” Division Council Meeting. As a Division, we were able to raise $129 for the Eliminate Project. For those that do not know, the Eliminate Project relies on Key Clubs to raise funds to help eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus, which is taking the lives of women and babies in poor countries around the world. By purchasing lemons and lemonade at our DCM, you guys are quite literally saving lives! So again, thank you for everyone in attendance, and hope to see everyone again at our June DCM at Division 19 Officer Training Conference, Narut-OTC! Seize the opportunity to learn about the roles and responsibilities of various officer positions. Second, I really hope to see clubs take advantage of the summer. It’s a common belief that summer vacation is also a break for Key Club, but that is not the case. Encourage your clubs to still serve their home, school, and community by hosting service events, club socials, and fundraisers for Key Club Preferred Charities. Do not be afraid to go outside your homes and make a difference, especially since the summer makes service so accessible. With that being said, the Region 8 Team encourages Division 19 North, and the rest of Region 8 Key Club, to attend the 2nd Ever Region 8 Olympics! There will be competitions, refreshments, new members, and much more! To finish, I would like to congratulate everyone for their efforts thus far. Division 19 North has accumulated nearly 500 hours of service and more than $250 for charities! There’s still a lot left in the term, so keep pushing onwards!

FROM YOUR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR,

ANDREW YANG

In regards to Eliminate Week, Pirate Penguins participated in the E-Lemon-Ate Challenge at the Eli-May-Nate Division Council Meeting in an overall effort to help save and protect women and their future babies from maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). Since 2010, Key Club has teamed up with the Kiwanis family and UNICEF to create The Eliminate Project. As a result, MNT has been successfully eliminated from 25 countries, all over the world!

Packing Bags for the Homeless Raena Higgins Lawndale | Historian On May 25th, our President, Shannon Sukantri, and new Key Club member, Sophia Urban, volunteered to help pack bags for the homeless. They joined a program called “Under The Bridges And on The Streets” where volunteers prepare and distribute food, clothing and personal care items directly to homeless people living on the streets. There were many volunteers working at the event, many of whom were adults, but there were some kids helping out too. Shannon and Sophia were responsible for making sandwiches for each bag which included a sandwich, bananas, 2 pairs of socks, cookies, and a bottle of water. By the end of event, we packed 600 bags of food and clothing in total! Most of the adult volunteers took the bags to their cars and drove to pass out the bags to homeless people in the streets. They had fun volunteering at the event hope to do it again soon!

Boba Fundraiser Travis Salud CAMS | Co-Vice President For the month of May, CAMS Key Club held a boba fundraiser to raise money in preparation for our CAMS Key Club banquet scheduled for June 1. We sold milk tea and thai tea from Kung Fu Tea. Forty cups were bought for selling. All 40 cups of boba were sold! CAMS Key Club ended up with a profit of $80. This money will go towards food for the banquet. Based on the success of this fundraiser, we plan to hold more boba fundraisers. We hope to buy and sell more cups next time.

EVENT RECAP EVENT RECAP EVENT RECAP Hawthorne Memorial BBQ Melissa Felix HMSA | Historian On Thursday May 23, 2019 from 4:30 to 7:30, HMSA Key Club helped out at Hawthorne Memorial BBQ. The Key Club members helped in doing various tasks such as: tossing salad, pouring drinks, filling up a cart with food, and serving food and drinks. HMSA Key Club made sure all of the guests who attended the event were happy and satisfied with their food and drinks. The BBQ at Hawthorne Memorial was in celebration for everything the Hawthorne Police Department has done for their city. It was also a fundraiser for the Hawthorne Police Department to raise funds for their K9s. Everyone enjoyed eating, drinking, being a part of a raffle, donating money, and watched a mini dog show while HMSA Key Club and other volunteers brought food and drinks to them.

Making Cards for TMMC Natalia Zeledon Da Vinci | President As a board, we decided that if we wanted to gain as many service hours for our club as possible, that we would hold multiple service events on campus and have done just that. On Monday, May 13th we held our first card making event after our meeting that lasted about an hour. About 20 members and our Kiwanis Advisor attended and we made cards for hospitalized children at Torrance Memorial. This event attracted many new members and they were impressed with the cause that we were aiding. By continuing similar activities after meetings, we hope to gain a positive image on campus and reach our service hour goal.

11 | CLUB RECAP

Co Vice-President | Ruth Moreno

Greetings! During the month of May, HMSA key club had three events take place. First and foremost, we were able to have three key club meetings after school, with more than 20 students attending. During the meeting, we went over upcoming events and future volunteer hours for the month of June. Furthermore, last Thursday, 6 of our members were able to assist the Hawthorne Memorial BBQ. And lastly, this brings us to our last meeting for the year 2018-2019 and our HMSA Key Club banquet, that took place Wednesday, May 29. We celebrated all the hard work and time given by our retired officers: Jezelle De Leon, Christian Alexander, and Andres Campos who in efforts are now heading off to college. As a result, our end of the year HMSA Banquet was such success, in which all of our members and officers spent a great time, and planned out our next step for an even more successful start, in return for our school year, for 2019-2020.

LAWNDALE

12 | CLUB RECAP

For the month of May, we started o having the Division 19 North Banquet. We celebrated the amazing term we had from 2018-2019, and said goodbye to our former President, Sally Hoang, and former Vice President, Daniel Aviles. They did an amazing job in providing students in Lawndale community service and helped make the community a better place. Next, we had the Eli-May-nate DCM, where the division fundraised money by buying slices of lemon for $1 and eating it which was donated to a good cause. Then, we had a community service event on May 25, where we joined a program called "Under the Bridges And On the Streets" and helped pack bags of food, clothing, and personal care products for the homeless. We earned about 8 hours this month. Lastly, we had a board meeting on May 28th to discuss the upcoming events happening in June.

HAWTHORNE

President | Eduardo Barajas

For the month of May, Hawthorne Key Club attended the annual Maker Faire on May 4th at Hawthorne High School. Members in attendance greeted the attendees and helped them sign in if they needed help in doing so. We also helped prepare the free goodie bags for the attendees with information about the programs the CVUHSD district offers. After that we moved on to helping passing out lunch and ended with a friendly goodbye in the efforts of having them return next year. Next we had 5 members attend the annual D19N end of the year banquet on the 10th. We celebrated our members who received awards and had a night of fun even though this meant the year was coming to an end. We then had three people from our club attend the May Eliminate DCM on the 18th in efforts to raise money for the eliminate project. They bought lemons to eat and overall had a good time with people from other clubs. Our last event of the month was annual K9 Dinner at Hawthorne Memorial on the 23rd of may. We helped pass out plates of food the people with tickets serving them warm meals they could either take home or eat then and there. We helped with passing out the desserts to the attendees giving them the choice of chocolate or vanilla and took their trash as they finished. We also had a total of 4 meetings for the club and 4 more meetings for board to prepare for the meeting with the club.
