PIRATE PENGUINS

LTG Hello Pirate Penguins! Thank you to all of you who attended the July DCM! If you were not able to attend, don’t worry! Our next DCM will be on August 27th and it will be an Olympics! Most schools will be in session by then, so start bringing new members and even new freshmen to events! I can’t wait to see new faces in the division! With that said, new members won’t join automatically! Make sure to use this valuable time during the summer to plan for the upcoming school year. Plan for events such as Club Rush, Orientations, and Fall Rally! I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish, and I cannot wait to see what we will achieve in the future! Enjoy the last few weeks of summer vacation! Waddling with a smile,

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

PIRATE PENGUINS

In many countries, deliveries take place in unhygienic circumstances, putting innocent mothers and their newborn babies at risk of getting diseases. One of the diseases they can get is MNT.

MNT stands for maternal/neonatal tetanus. It has been the most common lethal consequence of unclean deliveries and umbilical cord practices. MNT can easily be prevented by immunizing mothers with tetanus vaccine and/or by hygienic deliveries.

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT cont.

With the help of Kiwanis International and Unicef, they founded the ELIMINATE Project. The ELIMINATE Project provides protection for millions of mothers and their babies from MNT. But there are still more in need of help, with just a donation of $1.80 you'll help protect a mother, along with her future babies.

Pediatric Trauma Program The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) was established in 1994 to decrease the amount of seriously injured or killed children due to traumatic and unintentional injuries. PTP provides funding to train pediatric doctors, nurses, first responders, and special equipment.

How do I help? We support Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) by developing local projects which will reduce the number of children, who are killed or injured by trauma. One of the major events we do, whose profit goes to PTP is Fall Rally! When you make a contribution to PTP, you provide grants to Kiwanis and their partner hospitals, allowing them to help more children in more communities.

Despite going on summer vacation, CAMS Key Club had a total of 6 service projects this month! We kicked the month off with an UNBAGUETTE-ABLE (unforgettable) club banquet in which we celebrated our success during the 2015 - 2016 term. There were many laughs (and a few tears) as we reflected, recognized, and even enjoyed a few dares. It was great that despite banquet taking place that day, Key Clubbers still went all the way to Dockweiler Beach to help out at Conquer Our Run. In the following 2 weeks, we happily participated in 3 service projects: the Redondo Beach Triathlon, KTOWN Night Market, and ABC 7’s Feed SoCal. It’s funny because for Feed SoCal, we went on national television after having done Key Club cheers! Later on, we helped out with the Ridiculous Obstacle Course Race. Some members even had the opportunity to go on the actual course! To wrap up the month of June and to head into the month of July, we volunteered at a fireworks stand to support our school. Fortunately, CAMS Key Club had the most volunteer shifts and thus we will be receiving a majority of the profit made. We have our fingers crossed, hoping to break a fundraised total of $1000! We also held our first restaurant fundraiser of the term at Hiccups Tea House in Carson. We saw many different people coming out to support us, even someone from Division 13 South! That’s some Ohana love right there. And while there, we decided to have a board meeting in which we discussed future fundraisers as well as improvements to be made. CAMS Key Club has had such a wonderful month of June!

As the school year was coming to an end we had our last meeting as a club of the school year. In addition, some of the members attended OTC and the June DCM where we learned about the meaning of Key Club and volunteering around our community; as well as bond with the D19N and D19S. During the OTC, one of the interesting things we learned as a club was that there is service everywhere we go. Towards the end of the month, we helped with a firework stand with Lawndale High School and helped set up their booth and sell fireworks. We are all excited to what is to come in the month of July and spending our time in the summer sun! - Kalyn Atkinson

This month we planned our events to keep our members active during the summer. We volunteered with Tree Musketeers as well as Conquer Our Run, two organizations we collaborate with often, to improve our community. Some of our members also attended the DCM as well as OTC, where our members and officers learned what it means to be part of Key Club and how to fulfil their responsibilities to their greatest ability. We also planned for our largest fundraiser of the year, the Fourth of July Fair where we sell snow cones in our city of El Segundo, and worked with Da Vinci. - Zoe Forest PAGE 22 10 | AUGUST JULY 2016 2016 | DIVISION | DIVISION 19N19N NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER | |

Suns out but Gardena Key Club keeps it cool by attending events. Although we had two events this month, Gardena still proves that we waddle for service. On June 18 "Concert on the Lawn" and members were able to give out some goodies, like multiple flavors of ice cream and pound cakes to the people who attended the amazing concert outside of the Nakaoka Center. June 25th "The MLK Hattatude" took place at the Nakaoka Center where members started off the event by setting up the food trays and drinks on a table, then they began serving food to the people who attended the event around 2:30. Meanwhile, others were walking around pouring tea/punch in people's cups during the time of eating. Once everyone was done eating, members watched the breathtaking performances that were being shown off. GHS Key Club alongside the volunteers even got to be apart of the line dancing where we showed our spirit and were recognized for the hard work we displayed by the amazing audience with was a splendid feeling. Members say this was an astonishing experience of a colorful, energetic, and aura-filled event that represented and shone the culture of amazing individuals. For upcoming plans Gardena Key Club plans to have a Kiwanis Takeover with our Kiwanians to create a bond with the amazing individuals who make up our club with their help and raise some funds for our club. We're hard at work for the rest of summer, catch us bathing in the sun as we volunteer with a smile

This month has been a bit overwhelming, especially since it was the last month of school. We tried to make our last meeting memorable. We had our usual Wednesday meeting. The only event we had this month is the DCM. During this DCM some of our members had a lot of fun!

The month of June was an enjoyable month for HMSA Key Club. Before the end of our school year, our club volunteered in Class of 2016’s prom set-up. Our members helped with the table decorations, flower arrangements and centerpiece organization. On June 18, officers and members attended D19N’s OTC/DCM where they learned new skills to help them serve the community more effectively. Later in the month, our members volunteered at Tree Musketeers, a non-profit organization where kids become environmental leaders. At the event, our members helped plant trees which will grow over the years to make our community a brighter place. Lastly, with the help of CAMS Key Club, division necklaces were sold at DCON to help raise money for the EliMiNaTe project. Together, we raised $60. HMSA Key Club plans to continue this fundraiser for the upcoming year and is planning a club sweater fundraiser as well.

For the month of June, Lawndale Key Club served for four different service events. The first service event was at our Kiwanis Advisor’s house where we met with Shirley to roll and count coins that our club made for UNICEF. The old and new board walked together to the house where we were able to roll an amount of $752. The club also participated in a 5k “Gator Run” at Grand View Elementary School in Manhattan Beach. Several members helped set up warning signs and cones as well as folding vests for other volunteers. The club participated in the Redondo Beach Triathlon where our members helped with setting up a food booth for the athletes to eat at after they finished the course. After the event, we stayed to clean up trash that was left behind to make the environment cleaner than it was before. Our last event for the month includes setting up a firework booth where our members carried boxed of fireworks and helped unload them in order to fill up the shelves. We also helped fold empty boxes so that they can be recycled for other purposes.

CAMS Carlos Hinojosa

Our member is of the month Carlos Hinojosa! Carlos has been to many events during the busy month of June including Redondo Beach Triathlon, Ktown Night Market, and ROC Race. He is definitely a newer face to service events, but has definitely shown initiative by beginning to attend majority of events during the past month. He is always willing to help wherever that is needed with no complaints. At the very early hours of 5 AM, Carlos came to help out at the Redondo Beach Triathlon with plenty of enthusiasm and made sure that the participants had a nutritious breakfast! He also participated at the Ktown Night Market where he even got interviewed about Key Club and volunteering! Although it is the summer, Carlos has dedicated his time to volunteer and stay active.

Da Vinci Christian Cisneros We are so proud and happy to present Christian Cisneros as our Member of the Month for the month of June! Although his term as President came to an end earlier in the year, it has not stopped him from continuing to serve and support the club. He is always attending events (even two in one day!) and constantly looking for volunteering events in order to give members the opportunity to serve during the summer. His constant enthusiasm and passion towards Key Club and everything that he does inspires everyone around him. He is a prime example of a dedicated, passionate member and we could not imagine our club without him.

Gardena Ashley Rojas Ashley Rojas is the member of the month for Gardena High

School Key Club. Not only is she one of the most hard working, persistent members in the club but she is also Gardena Key Club’s Bulletin editor. Ashley always provides the most creative ideas to the table and always brightens up the mood everywhere she goes. This month she put in exceptional work in mostly all the events and definitely deserves the spotlight for this month. Congratulations Ashley, continue to serve your community with your upmost capability.

HMSA Jimmy Gomez Jimmy is a returning member but this year he has increasingly proven

himself as a Key Club member. This individual has already exceeded fifty hours and has been increasingly involved in the events that we had and this was especially apparent towards the end of the school year. Jimmy has always offered to help the board when our first term began and it is wonderful having him by our side. He was always a positive person when it came to our troubles as a club and during our general school meetings. Jimmy is an excellent member and we hope that he continues to involved in Key Club and inspires our other less active members who aren't as involved in Key Club as we would like them to be.

Lawndale Barbara Reveles This month I want to recognize Barbara Reveles. Since we only have a few members in our club, I’m proud to say she is one of the active members. She is very kind and quiet, but always tries to make more friends in events. She always tries to invite her friends to our events so they can have a taste of key club, and that is what makes her a great member. I’m very happy to nominate her this month.

Leuzinger Alicia Adiwidjaja We chose Alicia Adiwidjaja as Leuzinger Key Club member of the month for the month of June. She was an outstanding member due to the fact that she always made an effort to show up to the events and activities. She always attends the meetings. She tries her hardest to recruit others to attend the events. She is really dedicated in bettering the community and she put it before herself. | DIVISION | DIVISION 19N19N NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER | AUGUST | JULY 2016 | PAGE 35 27
