AHOY PIRATE PENGUINS,

01 | DNE’S MESSAGE

Happy July! I hope you all are enjoying your summer and are also serving your home, school, and community like we pledge to do so as Key Clubbers. As for the pledge, there has been a slight change after ICON, so please refer to page 9 for more details on that! In regards to these monthly newsletters, I’ve decided to begin a "Monthly Spotlight" section where YOU guys, the members, can be featured in the newsletter just by answering a simple question about Key Club. The spotlight question for the month of August will

"What is one word to describe Key Club and why?"I strongly urge you to take this be

opportunity as it allows for your fellow Pirate Penguins to get to know you and for your voice to be heard! More details regarding this update as well as responses to this month’s spotlight can be found on page 16. I’m very excited to hear your responses! :) Key Club-related posts that use the hashtag

#BestofD19N on Instagram will be featured in the newsletters, so remember to capture some memories at events! More information can be found on page 8. I want to thank all of the presidents, vice presidents, historians, and other officers who have successfully sent in their submissions. Keep up the amazing effort! A final thank YOU for reading this issue of The Icy Times, and I hope to see you soon!

FROM YOUR DIVISION NEWS EDITOR,

ALISA NAGASHIMA

02 | LETTER FROM THE LTG

WHAT’S WADDLING DIVISION 19 NORTH,

Thank you to all that attended Division 19 Officer Training Conference “Narut-OTC” and Division Council Meeting this past month. I am beyond grateful to be working alongside an amazing Division Leadership Team to deliver an educational session for the members that I serve. All workshops and presenters were chosen with your best interests in mind, and hopefully you were able to learn new things to aid in this term. For those that could not attend Officer Training Conference, there will be more opportunities for officer training later in the term, but do not hesitate to contact me for now. Congratulations to those recognized as appointed committee members to the various Division committees. On behalf of the respective coordinators, thank you for your dedication to serve your home, school, community, and, most importantly, Division 19 North. I look forward to working alongside each and every one of you! Lastly, I would like to talk about one life changing experience Division 19 North Key Club has recently presented me. From July 3rd-10th, I was fortunate enough to attend 76th Annual International Convention in Baltimore, Maryland and the Cal-Nev-Ha District Tour in Washington D.C. Without the support of Kiwanians, sponsors, and all of you, I would never have gotten this chance to view incredible structures, learn more about the International aspect of Key Club, and create memories that will last a lifetime. To those that attended the Region 8 Pancake Breakfast fundraiser, special thanks to you, I really do appreciate you. Before I conclude this message, I welcome everyone to attend the 2nd Annual Region 8 Olympics at South Gate Park on July 27th. This is a great opportunity to socialize with your R8 Alien counterparts and compete in large icebreakers. Hope to see you guys there! I know I said my previous paragraph was the last, but I had to include a short update on the Division. At the moment, Division 19 North has earned more than 1000 service hours and $500 for the preferred charities! These numbers are incredible for a term unlike the past three. However, we are far from reaching our Division goal of 11,000 service hours and $7,500.00 for the preferred charities. Keep up the work, and I hope to see a significant jump by the end of July!

WITH PENGUIN LOVE,

ANDREW YANG

Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor 19’-20’

The Pirate Penguins & Beastie Bunnies came together to attend the OďŹƒcer Training Conference + DCM to learn exciting yet important information about oďŹƒcer positions, Key Club, and even stress management! In doing so, they were able to bond with one another in a variety of icebreakers! We hope all attendees gained new insights and enjoyed the experience.

"Attending OTC was truly a blast! The workshops really opened my eyes to all the aspects Key Club has to offer. From the responsibilities of certain positions to information about FRS and DCON, OTC excited me to what this new term has in store. OTC gave me the opportunity to get closer to some of my fellow penguins as well as making some bunny friends. Going to OTC was truly enjoyable and I would relive that day if I could!"

Don’t worry :) Stay tuned for a video on our Youtube page coming soon!

PB Science Service Squad Shannon Sukantri Lawndale | President On June 8, we volunteered at the PB Science Headquarters in Inglewood and created science kits for elementary schools! There were groups of volunteers that either cut materials, packed, or taped the boxes. President Shannon Sukantri and Sophia Urban were helping each other pack science lesson material such as batteries, LED lights, and wires into small boxes. Also, we had the chance to get to know the other volunteers that were helping out at the event. By the time it was 12:00 pm, we were able to make 120 science kits! Everyone helped clean up and put the kits into bigger boxes so they can sent to an elementary school. We had a great time volunteering at this event and hope to volunteer again!

LA Regional Food Bank Vivian Nguyen CAMS | Co-Webmaster On Friday, June 14, CAMS Key Club volunteered with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank at the 8th Annual Feed SoCal Food Drive at Albertsons Gardena from 9:00 a.m to noon where we served as runners and helped to transport bags of donated food from a stand to an area near the food truck. We also clapped and cheered as more and more people came to donate food items and/or $5 for a pre-made package of food. This event was also broadcasted on the local news channels, so we assisted the reporters by being on camera and bringing energy and liveliness to the event. The event was a success and a lot of food was donated in order to feed the community and to those who are in most need of it.

EVENT RECAP EVENT RECAP EVENT RECAP Beach Cleanup Jhazymn Marinas Hawthorne | Historian This event was in Dockweiler Beach and on June 8th, from 9 am to 12 pm. As we got there, we had to sign in and get a t-shirt, snacks, trash picker, gloves, and a bag to put the trash in. We picked up trash for about one to two hours, and went to a barbecue right after that was made for this event. Before we started eating, they had showed the dierent Kiwanis members, drawing winners, and more. They also had stands on the side where you can get snow cones, popcorn, and even a game where you can get Kiwanis items. Later, they called us for the barbecue and got our food. This event was a great opportunity to help out clean the environment, and we all felt satisďŹ ed that this beach was cleaned up.

For the month of June, CAMS Key Club gave members many opportunities to serve the community. CAMS Key Club volunteered at Zack Adler’s Eagle Scout Project, Wrigley River Run, Nothin’ But Sand Beach Cleanup, Annual SoCal Food Drive, and Awesome 80s Run. CAMS Key Club members also attended division service events such as the Dog Toy Making event and the Color Run. After OTC, we also attended the June DCM where several CAMS Key Club members were announced as Division committee members.

DA VINCI

11 | CLUB RECAP

President | Natalia Zeledon

For the month of June, Da Vinci Key Club attended three events. On Tuesday, June 18th our Kiwanis presented three scholarships to the most hardworking and dedicated seniors from our club during their meeting. Our president attended to help assist with presenting the scholarships, update our sponsoring Kiwanis on the successes of our club so far, and receive updates on our sponsoring Kiwanis Club. Additionally, on Sunday, June 23rd two members attended the Division Dog Toy Making Event at Del Aire Park. Both members contributed to the cause by providing a lot of supplies and made more dog toys than they were expected to. Our members got to meet people from other schools within the Division and a little bit of an introduction to what Key Club is all about! Last but not least, On Saturday, June 29th three members from Da Vinci Key Club attended OďŹƒcer Training Conference 2019 where they attended a variety of useful workshops and network through Division 19. We are extremely grateful and heart warmed to have received Club of the Month, our Treasurer Andrew Garcia for receiving OďŹƒcer of the Month, one of our members Russell Wong for being appointed onto the Division Spirit Team, and our President Natalia Zeledon for being appointed onto the Division Service Committee. As a club board, we have been drafting our new and improved club website by asking parents and members what would they want on the website so that it can be a reliable source for our club. We look forward to attending more events throughout the summer!

HMSA

12 | CLUB RECAP

Co-Vice President | Brian Cifuentes

Greetings! During the month of June, HMSA Key Club had ďŹ ve events take place. First, we had the Herbal-life Triathlon, where we had members give water to those racing. Then, we had the Hawthorne Memorial BBQ. In this event, we had members serve food to the citizens of Hawthorne. Next, we had the UCLA Key Club event. After that, we had the Narut-OTC. Members and oďŹƒcers came to North High to participate in activities, ice breakers, and learn how to handle a board position and manage a club. Finally, we had members attend the Color Run. Here, we had members pass and hand out water cups to runners and throw colored powder. Currently, we are planning and organizing plans for the next and upcoming year for HMSA Key Club in the hopes of having a great and successful year.

On June 29, we had the Narut-OTC held by D19N and D19S where we visited workshops to learn more about the roles in Key Club, how to fundraise, Fall Rally, and DCON. Also, there was a small health drive which we donated hygienic supplies to help the Midnight Mission to supply people going through homelessness.

14 | CLUB RECAP

HAWTHORNE

President | Eduardo Barajas

For the month of June Hawthorne High attended a total of 5 events with the first one being the La Triathlon that was held on the 2nd. Our club helped with warning the bicyclists about the upcoming U turn as to avoid any accidents happening on the bike course. We also cheered on the racers as they passed us one by one for getting that far. The next event that Hawthorne High attended was the Kiwanis Beauty and the Beach Cleanup that was held on the 8th. We arrived and were given a basic rundown on what to do and how to do it then we were sent off to collect trash spread on the beach and placed it in trash bags. We then helped assemble sports water bottles for kiwanis putting the caps onto the bottles that were being given as prizes. The next event that we had members attend was the Dog toy making and potluck event at del aire park on the 23rd. We brought old garments of clothing to be cut up into strips that we would then braid together to make into dog toys for animals in shelters in need whilst having a division potluck where we bonded with one another as one Ohana. The 4th event we were in attendance was the annual OTC which also had a donation drive for the needy where people could bring items like deodorant or toothpaste to earn hours. At Otc we also were able to get more information about board positions and events like Fall rally or things like how to gain members and keep them interested. Our final event of the month was the Color Run on the 30th where we gave runners medals at the finish line and sprayed them with color to congratulate them for reaching each color. Overall having a fun time helping with tossing the color onto the runners while cheering them on.

16 | SPOTLIGHT

J u l y S pot l ight Whe n wa s yo ur "Key Club moment"? My Key Club moment was during freshman year, at a time where i wasn’t as active to be screaming my heart out at Fall Rally South or ugly crying at DCON. It was a marathon, an event that I’m sure all Key Clubbers have volunteered at. Getting up at 5 AM, going with pirate penguins from my home club, coincidentally meeting some beastie bunnies-- it was like any other race where we were handing out cups of water to runners and cheering them on in the heat. But for me, the lively atmosphere coupled with gracious smiles from runners receiving water made me feel proud of what i

Cindy Nguyen

was doing. Though i was nearly sunburnt by the end of the event, this was the moment that motivated me to go to more events and interact with more pirate penguins (and beastie bunnies).

I’ve had many wonderful experiences in various service events where I have been able to make an exhausted marathon runner smile as she reached for my high-five or a 5-year-old boy giggle as I scrubbed his muddy feet with a towel at Mud Mania. To me, there isn’t one single Key Club event that made me think, "THIS IS MY KEY CLUB MOMENT!". Instead, it’s the accumulation of smiles and "Thank-Yous" from the people that I serve that made me think, "it’s not just a moment, but a

journey".
