SPOTLIGHT CORE VALUE: INCLUSIVENESS

Embrace and welcome people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to join in serving and making a positive difference in our world.

EDITOR’S note

HAPPY AUGUST PIRATE PENGUINS! Even though we’ve been out of school since March, I feel like this summer flew by! I can’t believe that school is starting so soon. As the new school year begins, I want to wish good luck to all the seniors on their college apps! I know that this time can be stressful but just remember to be yourself and show how amazing you are through your apps! To all the incoming freshmen, I want to welcome you to Key Club! When I was a freshmen, I remember going to my first key club event, the August Beach DCM, and everyone there was super welcoming. Not only did I feel like I was in an inclusive environment, I was also able to help my community by cleaning up the beach. My passion and love for service has grown ever since. Although this school year is starting online, I hope you can all still find your love for service. Remember that service is all around us and that there are still so many ways to help your community! Lastly, I want to remind you all to take care of yourselves and those around you. Self care is so important and it’s okay to take breaks when you need to. Remember to also check up on those that you love and remind them of how much they mean to you! Thank you for reading this month’s newsletter! I hope you all enjoyed reading it. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Good luck and stay ICY.

WITH GRATITUDE, Julie Mai Division Newsletter Editor

LTG’S LETTER Hey Penguins!! As the new school year starts, we will be adapting to new ways of education, extracurriculars, serving, and etc. This means that the Division Leadership Team will be adapting to new ways to help you take wonderful opportunities. Although online is not the preferred method of education and service, we still have to be thankful that we still have a chance to do all these wonderful services. To all of the current members, you guys have been able to serve at races, attend Fall Rally South, and go to in-person DCM’s. It’ll be a hard transition for you guys, but let’s not forget our main goal for the next months will be to recruit freshmen. They have never been able to serve in-person, so it is our job to show them what key club truly is. I have no idea how each club will hold their club rush, but make sure you guys are supportive of your officers and presidents so that they have the best experience recruiting freshmen. I can’t wait to see all of you in-person and hold a real life DCM! Good luck and keep serving!

Waddlin’ with ServICE, Ryan Son D19N Lieutenant Governor

DCM RECAP

During the DCM for the month of July, Division 19 North was in for a treat. We talked about the potential spirit gear that our division could be having, the t shirt design contest that was live, and updates on Fall Rally South. It wasn’t too much of a complicated DCM, but the members were able to receive updates and interesting news from Lieutenant Governor Ryan and the CNH District.

COLOR A SMILE

SALLY HOANG | CAMS CO-VICE PRESIDENT For the month of July, CAMS key clubbers participated in the Color-A-Smile service project. Color-A-Smile service project is to distribute cheerful drawings to senior citizens, troops overseas, and anyone in need of a smile. This service project was a week-long project and almost achieved 80 service hours. We are eager to start the new school year with more service events and meet new pirate penguins from the class of 2024!

club

CAMS | CELESTE GASTELUM During the month of July, CAMS Key Club, hosted weekly at-home-service projects with Zoom meetings on Tuesdays. CAMS members helped serve their communities by coloring pages for senior citizens, writing thank you letters to local health care workers, creating cards for pediatric patients and so much more. We also had more than 20 members attend the July DCM where our Kiwanis Advisor was recognized as Advisor of the Month and we are grateful for all that Mr. Bender has done for CAMS. As the school year draws near we continue to plan new service projects and events.

DA VINCI | KIMBERLY LEE During the month of July, Da Vinci Key Club started making advertisements towards Charity Miles for any members who wanted to gain some extra service hours. In order to keep the club active, we have also been posting classroom announcements so any member is able to catch up if they were to miss any event from our club or division. Our club started brainstorming new service events such as: letters, creating masks, and dog toys. As well as preparing new events for our new incoming members this year. Our division also had a monthly DCM and we had several members attend!

GARDENA| CHRISTIAN & RYAN Ahoy Penguins! During the month of July, what took place was a July DCM where members who attended were informed on what was to come of Key Club during Summer quarantine. Additionally, in the DCM Gardena Key Club was recognized as Club of the Month. Woooo! There was then a division even called “Charity Miles” where obtain service hours for exercising, which was a good way to get hours and get into shape. On Gardena’s end, we have been planning and talking back and forth with UCLA to hold a Blood Drive which will take place next month.

HMSA| SOPHIA & PABLO During the month of July, HMSA Key Club has been doing a lot of advertisement towards HMSA Key Club sweaters and masks as well. In hope’s of keeping members active, the designs are an art contest, winners’ art will be our design for our sweaters and as well as our masks. The board has also been meeting weekly to brainstorm ideas for volunteer work. Key Club also had July dcm, unfortunately not many members attended. Well Penguins, we hope to see you all soon! Stay safe & abooga along :)

LEUZINGER| LEENA NGUYEN

What’s up penguins! During the month of July, Leuzinger Key Club was unfortunately unable to participate in any community service events. However, almost all of us attended the July DCM where members were informed on the various ways Key Club would function during the summer as it’s being affected by quarantine. Despite all that, shoutout to our amazing President, Charles Nguyen, who received Officer of the Month! Woohoo!! Once again we were unable to find any community service events, but we were able to participate in the DCM which will hopefully help us find community service events for the month of August during this difficult time. Until then, stay safe penguins!

Ahoy penguins! In the month of July, Santa Monica Key Club held a zoom meeting with its officers to discuss upcoming events and the overall organization of the club. We realized that we needed to work better as far as the cooperation of our members and our responsibilities as a part of Division 19 North. Later in the month we spoke with a SAMOHI counselor on zoom to brainstorm future service events that can be held virtually and safely. We made a list of ideas and are hoping to make them happen in the upcoming months. To end the month off, we held a zoom meeting with our general members to answer any questions that they may have and address the lack of participation we have contributed to in the past. It may not have been a very busy month for Samohi’s Key Club but we plan on practicing being as active as possible in time for the upcoming school year.

SPOTLIGHT WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE KEY CLUB MEMORY? HANNAH LLONA The time when I volunteered at the Filipino booth for the St. Catherine fiesta. It was the first event I headed and although I had to stand for 5 hours straight before a break, I had so much fun! The nice lady in charge gave me free Filipino food for lunch and even let me take even more home after the event finished! I was able to make a new friend from a different division and we kept laughing while giving out food to customers throughout the night! I’ve been volunteering there ever since, and I miss it so much!!

SAMANTHA NGUYEN My first Fall Rally South, there were 4 people from Leuzinger that came, and I did everything I could so that we could go, so we rode on the bus with cams & then when we went to the rally, and I knew all the cheers, I checked my heartbeat on my apple watch and my heart beat (bpm) was at 216 that's when I knew I have a passion for key club.
