Club Rush Written by: Division 19 North Social Media Coord. Rita Nguyen What is Club Rush? Club Rush is a day where each high schools presents all their clubs and organizations in hope of gaining members , this includes Key Club! Use this time to, educate others and plant the seeds of service! Use these tips and tricks to make the most of the school’s club rush and to lead to a successful term. You do not have to use all of these tips but they are here as a reference to help. Keep in mind that each school has a different set of rules and guidelines and to make sure to review your schools before using any tips that you're unsure. ADVERTISEMENT

SPIRIT -Make sure your board and current members are all decked out in key club gear like Division Shirts, bandanas, bags etc. - Don’t be afraid to start a division cheer or let everyone know exactly “how you feel.” -Being spirited will draw attention and bring bigger crowds, which means more potential members! -Make small cards or flyers with information on the club you serves meeting times and pass them out to people! In the past some clubs have also made clothes pins with key club slogans and pinned them on people walking by but we recommend not doing that without a person's consent since it may cause problems.

-Have members or officers wear signs that say “Ask me how I feel!” Or “Ask me about Key Club!” around the day of club rush. This will make people interested and want to learn more while promoting the organization. -When anybody asks about key club make sure to let them know that Key Club International is the oldest, largest, and most successful non-profit organization for high school students and if they want to know more they're going to have to attend your booth! -Put up flyers or posters around with information about key club or about the club you serve and details on meetings. Make sure to consult with your school administration before doing this!

BOOTH 

  

Decorate your table/ booth with everything key club related! Photo albums, informational flyers, brochures and more will help people understand exactly what key club is. Many schools use an Instagram board as something unique and creative. If you do, make sure to add #bestofd19n on the caption and tag us on Instagram! When students come by to the booth, have candy or snacks to pass out and engage in conversation and educate others on key club and its benefits. Doing an icebreaker will not only get students to interact with current members, but will also create a large crowd and attract more people

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

PIRATE PENGUINS

In many countries, deliveries take place in unhygienic circumstances, putting innocent mothers and their newborn babies at risk of getting diseases. One of the diseases they can get is MNT.

MNT stands for maternal/neonatal tetanus. It has been the most common lethal consequence of unclean deliveries and umbilical cord practices. MNT can easily be prevented by immunizing mothers with tetanus vaccine and/or by hygienic deliveries.

With the help of Kiwanis International and Unicef, they founded the ELIMINATE Project. The ELIMINATE Project provides protection for millions of mothers and their babies from MNT. But there are still more in need of help, with just a donation of $1.80 you'll help protect a mother, along with her future babies.

Pediatric Trauma Program The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) was established in 1994 to decrease the amount of seriously injured or killed children due to traumatic and unintentional injuries. PTP provides funding to train pediatric doctors, nurses, first responders, and special equipment.

How do I help? We support Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) by developing local projects which will reduce the number of children, who are killed or injured by trauma. One of the major events we do, whose profit goes to PTP is Fall Rally! When you make a contribution to PTP, you provide grants to Kiwanis and their partner hospitals, allowing them to help more children in more communities.

PIRATE PENGUINS

Aileen Maranan | President CAMS Key Club had an exciting month of August with a total of 6 service projects! We started the month off by planting seeds of service at LAX Dunes. We also had 2 interclub events with Gardena Key Club! For Concert on the Lawn, we helped set up an open concert and prepare ice cream for Gardena residents. It was a really fun event filled with laughs and chair flipping! We also joined forces at the Gardena Jazz Festival in which we were assigned to be waiters and waitresses for jazz fans. The fans were very nice and some of us were lucky enough to get tipped! These two events were such great bonding experiences! Other than that we helped out at CicLAvia and the DCM Beach Cleanup (which we had a whopping number of 23 attend)! | DIVISION NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER PAGE 18 | OCTOBER 2016 |19N DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | 2016 | PAGE 17

PIRATE PENGUINS

Other than service projects, we're really proud to say we hosted our very FIRST Summer Social! Over 20 people attended as we had so much fun playing games, participating in a scavenger hunt, watching board dares, writing cards for veterans, and eating pizza and drinking boba! Earlier in the month we had our Kiwanis Takeover with Gardena Valley Kiwanis in which we auctioned some items and fundraised $189. We also had our first general meeting of the school year with a FULL HOUSE (classroom). We saw so many new faces, especially those of freshmen and can't wait to see them more in the future!

What: Help out at the annual Kickin' Cancer Walk/Run! When: Sunday, October 2nd What: Come support CAMS Key Club at our garage sale! When: Saturday, October 5th (time TBA)

Kalyn Atkinson | President During the month of August was full of reflection and critical thinking. The board came together to discuss what we can do to improve on attendance and recruitment for new members. We have multiple ideas for club rush, fall rally, and upcoming events. In addition, some of our members volunteered at the Tree Musketeers event in El Segundo where they helped pick up trash and many of us attended the beach cleanup / DCM. Many of our dedicated members came along with some new members! Altogether we had 17 members show up! August has always been hard for members to come to events because they are focused on school, the DCM and Tree Musketeer events was a major success on attendance for August and we hope to improve on that for the months to come.

Zoe Forest | President The month of August was spent planning events, fundraisers, and recruitment ideas as we got back into the swing of Key Club during the school year. We held our first officer meeting in anticipation of club rush (not until October) and our upcoming meetings. We made a list of ideas for both recruitment and also member participation and retention. We also figured out what events we want to volunteer in the coming months. | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 2016 | PAGE 21

PIRATE PENGUINS

Kathleen Rojas | President Throughout this past month, Gardena Key Club has been hard at work even with school back in session. Members have been waddling to events and Gardena Key Club contacted CAMS Key Club and we had a joint summer event! This was at the Nakaoka Center August 14 at an event called “Concert on Lawn,” here members scooped tubs of ice cream while enjoying some laughs and talking about the school year approaching and upcoming plans they have for Key Club. We then served ice cream to the audience outside enjoying the concert. This event was very successful by having CAMS members attend and helping us out and bonding together. The same day Gardena Key Club helped out at our local elementary school where 5 members all together helped collate and staple packets for the school and this required so much time that everyone stayed after hours to help finish up the packets. The end results were satisfaction from each and every one of the members.

PIRATE PENGUINS

Then came August DCM where new members had the chance to bond and develop leadership skills with other members of Division 19 North. Prior to DCM, we had a beach cleanup and we cleaned up around the beach. Throughout the day we learned more about Key Club and this month we got Club of the Month. Gardena Key Club also had a successful club rush with over 80 signups and many underclassmen joining with excitement to see what's in store for the year! The next day, August 14, 2016, we went back bright and early to 186th elementary school to finish up what we did not finish from the school's packets and then helped out in different locations of the school to help prep the school for back to school opening. The same members attended and helped out because they wanted their work to feel accomplished and we were rewarded with some delicious lunch and appreciation from the school's principle which felt very satisfying after all the long extended hours to complete our work and leave the elementary with a successful first day of school. Many of our events are at our local community center or even 186th elementary school, which makes it more convenient for members to attend and increase member activity and attendance at events. Gardena Key Club continues to waddle for service and accomplish our goals for the year as a club together! The new school year doesn't stop us from serving our home, school, and community and showing what Gardena is all about.

What: Working crafts and games, along w/ petting zoo When: Sat. October 1st What: Help out Gardena High draw blood for the Blood Drive! When: Mon. October 17th

Daniel Pajulas | President With school starting soon, it was a challenge to find service events and get members to participate. We only had one service event this month, which was the “Sand Castle/Jr 6-Man Contest at Manhattan Beach, where members supervised the contestants while they were creating their artwork. We were able to get thirteen members to attend the DCM, which was double the number of members of what we usually have! We hope to increase our attendance at the DCM each month. With Club Rush beginning this Friday, our board was able to come up with brilliant ideas to recruit new members. One of our ideas includes having one of our board members to walk around in a penguin suit to get the crowd pumped up to join Key Club. Hopefully all goes well!

CAMS

Jenny Lee

For the month of August, CAMS Key Club has chosen Jenny Le as our member of the month! We are particularly proud of Jenny because not only has she been active over the past couple of months, she has also attended many of summer events! No matter what event it is, she exhibits excitement and joy to serve. Her smile always lights up the room and she’s always cheering for D19N! Even in the scorching heat at Jazz Festival, she was still happy to volunteer and help out whenever needed. At the August DCM, she was open to talking to new freshmen and is always showing initiative. We are happy to have Jenny as our member of the month!

Da Vinci

Catherine Roman

We’re excited to announce the first member of the month for the school year is Catherine Roman! Catherine is an awesome part of the DVS Key Club family. She is a highly dedicated member of Key Club and is always willing to serve. She takes initiative, such as at the August DCM when she helped take over the food stand! She is always full of spirit and brings such joy to our club. We are so glad to have her be a part of our club and hope her love for serving continues to grow. Great job, Catherine. Keep it up!

Kathleen Rojas

If you have been in Key Club for at least 2 months you have probably heard of the great pirate penguin Kathleen Rojas. She is the current president of Gardena High School Key Club as well as September’s member of the Month. Kathleen does work beyond her presidency. She is a very devoted Key Clubber with the persistence of a cheetah and when she wants something done she will get it done in a flash. She has provided too much to the club to go unrecognized. That is why I am happy to say that she is this month’s top member even though she will always be top member in our hearts. Congratulations Kathleen Rojas, you deserve it.

HMSA

Justin Mendoza

HMSA Key Club is honored to present Justin Martinez as its August Member of the Month. Justin displayed excellent leadership skills and enthusiasm when taken on his duties as a member over the summer. Not only did he take part in our school’s summer bridge as a leader but he also took the time out his own summer to volunteer at our school. In August, he has been one of the most active members and we are happy that he continues to uphold the values and spirit of Key Club at all times. Justin is a reminder of those individuals that our clubs strives to shape and send off to create a better future for not only themselves but everyone around them. Congratulatious Justin! Great job!

Lawndale

Hammad Khan

This month I would like to recognize a member that has been very active lately. He dedicates his time for key club by going to the DCM’s and events we put out. He’s a senior so he has a very busy schedule, but he manages his time very well for key club. I’m very excited and happy to nominate him this month. He deserves the recognition because he is very kind and enthusiastic at events. I'm happy to say he's one of the few active members. His name is Hammad Khan

This could be you! Ways to be more involved in Key Club: • Attend club meetings and monthly DCMs! • Participate in volunteering events, fundraisers, etc! • Help out your board members! Ask if there’s anything that you can do! • Show dedication and spirit! • Develop more relationships with people both in your club and the division as well! • Have fun!
