02 | LETTER FROM THE LTG

WHAT’S WADDLING DIVISION 19 NORTH,

What’s Waddling Pirate Penguins, First and foremost, I would like to congratulate every single one of you for contributing to improving your home, school, and community through the summer. As school is back in session for everyone, I wish everyone the best of luck, and for my seniors, try and remain positive during this overly stressful time. I hope that everyone got the schedule they wanted, and excel in those classes as well. Do not be afraid to ask questions or do anything that may improve YOUR learning experience. With that being said, I must encourage all Pirate Penguins to promote Key Club to all students at their respective schools. Be friendly, be kind, and be a leader, just as how an exemplary Key Clubber should be. I would now like to thank everyone for attending the August DCM with the Division 13 South Ninjas! It is beyond impressive that we, Division 19 North, were able to go 1 to 1 for members with 13 South, who has 15 clubs AND hosted the DCM in their own territory. I genuinely appreciate members in attendance for taking the initiative to join the rest of the Division 19 North at the beach. Congratulations to all of the August Recognition acceptees, but I would like to highlight our member of the month, Victor Zuleta from CAMS Key Club. He has demonstrated immense dedication to Key Club these past couple of years, and I am beyond honored to recognize Victor for his service this term. In closing, it is time for September Updates! As of September 10th, Division 19 North has served 1944.5 service hours out of our goal of 8,000 service hours! This is absolutely amazing, and I attribute all of this success to you! Division 19 North has also raised $1,014.33 for the preferred charities out of our goal of $3,000! Know that supporting the Division at fundraisers saves the lives of countless individuals around the world. For example, continue to buy Division stickers from myself or Division Fundraising Coordinator Cindy - all proceeds go to charity! I am the luckiest Lieutenant Governor in all of Key Club International to be leading and learning from the brightest individuals I have been fortunate enough to meet.

WADDLING FOR SERVICE,

ANDREW YANG

Division 19 North Lieutenant Governor 19’-20’

04 | BEACH DCM RECAP

On a hot, sunny day, the Pirate Penguins from 19 North and Ninjas from 13 South gathered at Seal Beach to hold the August Division Council Meeting (DCM), help make the beach a cleaner environment by picking up trash, and play a variety of games including tug-of-war!

The August DCM was a whole lot of fun. Not only did we gather around for some beach bonding, we also helped clean up Seal Beach with our ninjas from D13S. We also played games in teams to see which team was the best. Not

meaning to brag, but my team ended up being the best.

Didn’t attend the event? Don’t worry :) You can watch a video coming soon!

Bra Run Ryan Son CAMS | Co-Vice President On August 25, 2019, CAMS Key Club attended the Bra Run 5k chaired by Zakaria Zerouali. The Bra Run was held from 5:00AM-11:00AM. This event was held for the celebration of breast cancer survivors. Held annually, the owner of the event had us volunteer at multiple stations. Some of us helped with transporting water bottle cases to different water stations. Others helped with registration and shirt pickups. We all helped with medals and the finish line. This event was amazing to attend because we were able to socialize with all of the many cancer survivors. Helping them realize that they had a huge achievement and milestone was wonderful.

In this picture, you can see Lauren grabbing sodas to give to the customers. For the Jazz Festival, our members had to help set up and were divided to work at different stations. Our members received a cute Tshirt to differentiate them from regular people and helpers. After the Jazz Festival, we had to help take down tarps and tables. We helped clean up everything by throwing away plates, cups, etc.

For the month of August, CAMS Key Club held three service events and a summer social with our ohana. The GAMSzinger summer social was hosted by CAMS, Gardena, and Leuzinger Key Club on August 3 where members participated in fun icebreakers, cardmaking, a scavenger hunt, and water balloon fight. On August 10, members volunteered at Shakespeare by the Sea (chaired by Sally Hoang) at Polliwog Park. There, members helped the staff pass out surveys and raffle tickets to the audience, and help set up and break down the concession stands. On August 17, Cameron Ito chaired the Madrona Marsh Habitat Restoration event where members helped pick up trash and clear the path around the marsh. On August 25, CAMS Key Club attended the Bra Run 5k/10k to assist with several stations at the run. Several CAMS Key Club members also participated at the Division Ice Skating fundraiser, and the August DCM where Victor Zuleta was recognized for member of the month and CAMS Key Club was recognized for 1st place in the DPS.

DA VINCI

12 | CLUB RECAP

President | Natalia Zeledon Co President | Isabella Bañuelos

Throughout the month of August, Da Vinci Key Club was unable to attend events due to there being a lack of community service opportunities in our area. As a board we tried organizing a carpool system to get members to the August Division Council Meeting on August 17th in Long Beach but failed. Though we were very saddened by this loss we are proud to say that another one of our officers was recognized as Officer of the Month. We noticed a lack of participation in our club throughout the month and immediately brainstormed a lot of fundraisers and service projects to hold on campus so that it could be convenient for our members. On Friday, August 23rd we held a board meeting after school for about an hour to discuss club logistics, Fall Rally South, recruitment, and methods to keep our club active to avoid the challenges that we faced throughout the month. On August 28-30th our President Natalia Zeledon, Vice President Eric Morelos, and Spirit Team Representative Russell Wong were chosen to be student leaders at our school’s annual Overnighter; a three day retreat to welcome incoming freshmen to Da Vinci. We are extremely humbled yet proud to have at least three students represent Key Club on this retreat and get to know the class of 2023, we hope that by having representation of our club and sharing our “key club moments” throughout the trip will inspire freshmen to join our club. We look forward to a busy, yet fun beginning of the school year and see the potential that both new and returning members have to offer!

HMSA

13 | CLUB RECAP

Co-Vice President | Ruth Moreno

For the month of August, our club didn’t have much activity but we still had a few things planned. We had members attend the D19N IceSkating Fundraiser, where they paid a fee, which went towards PTP, and they just skated around and had fun. We also had a presentation at our school to promote HMSA Key Club to all of the incoming freshmen during Club Rush. August may have been pretty inactive, but we have plenty of events lined up for the next 2 months, so we can’t wait for that.

LAWNDALE

14 | CLUB RECAP

President | Shannon Sukantri

For Lawndale Key Club, we had 3 events and 3 board meetings that happened this month. We had a board meeting on August 6th, to discuss the service events happening later on in the month of August. On August 10th from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, we volunteered at PB Science in Inglewood where we packed hands-on science lesson materials for elementary schools around the area. We had another board meeting on August 13th, where we discussed some ideas to promote Key Club in Club Rush. Then, on August 17th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, there was an event called Steps for the Earth where we cheered the runners and passed out food and water at the finish line. We had our 3rd board meeting on August 27 to talk about possible fundraisers and upcoming service events for September. Lastly, on August 31th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, we volunteered at the Under the Bridge and on the Streets event, which we elped pack bags of food and supplies for the homeless.

15 | CLUB RECAP

LEUZINGER

President | Jorge Arroyo Vice President | Juan Contreras

Building our way forward from the beginning of August, Leuzinger first participated in a summer social event (and fundraiser) with CAMS and Gardena High School, dubbed GAMSzinger, at Alondra Park on the first Saturday of August. We have seven of our members attend, they participated in activities with the members of other clubs, such as icebreakers, cardmaking for hospital patients, and a friendly water balloon activity. Two board members also attended the Division 19 Ice Skating fundraiser. The final week of August a few club members assisted with setting up posters and materials necessary for Club Rush, which was held the first week of September.

16 | CLUB RECAP

HAWTHORNE

President | Eduardo Barajas

For the month of August Hawthorne High Key club was relatively inactive. The first event that we had was the divisions monthly Dcm with Division 13 South. We did our recaps and went over old and new business. Then we had a Beach cleanup service project at the dcm to depollute the beach a bit. From there we had fun in the sun with our friends the ninjas and had a few friendly competitions with teams that consisted of people from both divisions. We then prepared and had Club rush at our home school to recruit new people and show them a little bit of what key club is about. We answered any questions they had and from there we had our first meeting. The first meeting was a success with many new and old faces showing up to learn a little more about what key club is about. We played ice breakers and gave them the dates for upcoming events to hopefully see them give back to their community.

GARDENA

17 | CLUB RECAP

President | Debbie Garcia

Ahoy Pirate Penguins! For the month of August, Gardena Key Club has had multiple events. To start off the month, we had a joint social with CAMS and Leuzinger Key Club on Saturday, August 3rd at Alondra Park. During the social, members participated in icebreakers and bonded with the other members from different schools. Additionally, we had a card making service event during the social for kids in hospitals. On August 10th, Gardena Key Club attended the service event called Concert in the Lawn from 4PM-7PM at Nakaoka Center. Members helped serve ice cream to people that attended the concert. A week later, we had our joint Beach DCM where we received third place in the Division Point System. During the last week of August we were definitely busy bees! On Sunday, August 26th we had the Jazz Festival from 11AM-6PM at Rowley Park where members helped serve individuals that sponsored Jazz Festival. Afterwards from August 28th to August 29th we had Club Rush during lunch at our school and we had over 70 sign ups! Throughout Club Rush week we talked about Key Club and encouraged people to join! Lastly, on Friday, August 30th we had our board meeting to talk about our past events and future projects we had in mind.

The very first event I attended was the

August Beach DCM in my freshman year. Everyone at the event was super friendly and really made me feel like I was a part of Key Club. The thing that makes Key Club so great is that everyone is so welcoming. Through Key Club I have made many great connections with people that I wouldn’t have without Key Club. Key Club has helped me gain more that just a love for service, it has given me an ohana.
