SPOTLIGHT CORE VALUE: CHARACTER BUILDING

Embrace and welcome people of all backgrounds and ethnicities to join in serving and making a positive difference in our world.

EDITOR’S note

HAPPY SEPTEMBER PIRATE PENGUINS! Can you believe that it has almost been a month since we went back to school? I know that learning virtually has been difficult for most of us, but I’m so proud of all of you for being able to make the most out of the situation. Hopefully, things can go back to normal soon, but until then, keep pushing through! As we continue to stay in quarantine, I hope you all have been staying safe and staying healthy. Remember when you go out, to always wear your masks and to wash your hands often! With every new school year, comes a new chance to make resolutions for yourself! As we approach mid September, I hope you all have been able to establish the goals that you want to achieve throughout the school year. Take some time to reflect and see how you can grow to be the best version of yourself. Search for new opportunities where you can branch out and discover something new. Through this, I know that you all will be able to become a better friend, family member, and leader to those around you! Thank you for reading this month’s newsletter! I hope you all enjoyed reading it. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. Good luck and stay ICY.

WITH GRATITUDE, Julie Mai Division Newsletter Editor

LTG’S LETTER What’s Waddlin’ Division 19 North?

I hope you guys are safe and healthy and waiting patiently for this pandemic to come to an end. While doing so, let’s take a moment of silence for the traumatic events that were witnessed during the month of September whether it was 19 years ago or 24 hours ago. Let’s hope for our friends and families who might be caught in the fires to be safe and healthy as well as those who suffered traumatic loss from the horrible day that is known as 9/11. Always be kind to one another and always know that each and every person might be going through something different and difficult. Be a good leader, caring, inclusive, and a good character to those around you. With this in mind, good things will come and you will truly change the lives of many. Key Club has been a rough journey this term and it is all of our jobs to keep serving no matter the condition. We have been doing an excellent job and are helping so many people experience joy. With the new school year, we want to focus on member retention and the recruitment of the freshmen. Please be sure to spread the positivity and true meaning of Key Club to those around you. They are in store for so many treats! Even with the postponement of Fall Rally South, we continued to work hard for the preparation. We are now holding our spirit sessions for those who want to attend Fall Rally South in the future. Please join us in our upcoming Division Council Meetings to learn more about how we will manage these events! Again, be kind to one another and never judge someone for what they wear or look. Stay icy and waddle for service with me! Thank you Penguins!

AUGUST DCM

EVENT RECAP

6

ANGELA DELGADO| LAWNDALE PRESIDENT We attended the August DCM and received a warm welcome by the other schools in our division. During the DCM, we participated in a fun icebreaker, where we met our “soulmate” by answering questions to see who we had most in common with. We also watched an inspiring video that motivated us to take action in supporting people who don’t have access to water by donating money to build a water well. Lastly, we were reminded of what Key Club is all about for the new members that joined us in the event.

COLOR A SMILE COCO MOVIE NIGHT SALLY HOANG| CAMS CO-VICE PRESIDENT

The D19N Color A Smile X Coco Movie Night was a fun event for members to color pages while watching Coco. The event began as DLT members introduced themselves to the incoming freshmen in our division. After introductions, members gathered their coloring pages and colored pencils while we waited for the movie to start. By the end of the movie, most members were able to finish 3-4 coloring pages. Knowing that these coloring pages would put a smile on someone’s face was amazing!

CAMS | CELESTE GASTELUM

club

During the month of August, CAMS Key Club, continued to hold weekly at-homeservice projects with Zoom meetings on Tuesdays. CAMS members helped serve their communities by making and donating dog toys to local pet shelters and writing comforting letters to senior citizens in retirement homes. We also had more than 20 members attend the August DCM where our Faculty Advisor, member Camille Casiles and Officer Angela Francisco were recognized as Advisor, Member and Officer of the Month respectively and we are grateful for all that each has done for CAMS and their community. As the school year begins we plan new service projects and events for the next month..

DA VINCI | ALYSSA HUBLER

Ahoy penguins!! In the month of August, the Da Vinci Key Club board filmed individual videos to share with our President to edit. Our school’s club fair is coming up soon so we decided to create something that would help freshmen and other new students to understand what Key Club is without being with them in person to explain. With this video, we hope to make students interested and excited about being a Pirate Penguin. The board also had a meeting about future club meetings. We discussed when meetings would start and what day(s), and times they would be. Because Da Vinci has three schools together, the board decided on having separate meetings during lunch until we can find a time that is efficient for all three schools. Lastly, one person from our club attended Division 19’s Color-a-Smile social movie event on Sunday, August 30th.

GARDENA| CHRISTIAN VIRATA & RYAN NGUYEN

Ahoy Penguins! During the month of August, our clubs Vice-President, Ryan Nguyen, held a general meeting where we introduced Key Club towards new incoming members and freshmen. Additionally, we announced the service event for this month, The Los Angeles Food & Clothes Drive, where members drop off canned food and clothes at 351 S. Anderson St, Los Angeles CA 90033. We then proceeded to inform members to attend the Color a smile Social/Movie Night zoom. Lastly, we continuously are trying to obtain member sign ups for the UCLA Blood Drive on September 29th.

HAWTHORNE| BRIAN DSOUZA

Ahoy Pirate Penguins! In the month of August, Hawthorne Key Club has been starting to become more active and communicative between each other. Our Cabinet has been able to meet more and be able to brainstorm different ways we could hold community service events and have members join. We are planning how to grab individuals attention for the upcoming Club Rush for next month in order to recruit new members for our club. This month has been quiet due to our club still trying to get everything situated with finding a new Advisor. We are still finding ways around that problem currently and will be back up soon. Other than that, we have an upcoming event that could potentially be held called the Hawthorne High School Food Giveaway, where 200 meals will be available for those families/children in need.

HMSA| SOPHIA CASTELLANOS & PABLO GARCÍA Heyyoo fellow penguins!! During the month of August, HMSA Key Club has stayed active with its board, having two meetings to discuss new ways to support members and advertisement. Due to the ever-changing times, our school pushed back our club rush, but we did get to ABOGGA our way into their hearts with an information meeting. This and more has been finalized in the Key Club website. HMSA Key Clubs aspires to have more events and volunteer opportunities once we communicate with local businesses. Stay hydrated & don’t forget to chill :)

LAWNDALE | ANGELA DELGADO Hi there Pirate Penguins! In the month of August, Lawndale Key Club’s Board members worked hard and will continue to work hard in preparation for our club rush. We’re expecting a good turnout with spirited members looking to serve throughout the pandemic and beyond. We’ve already started recruiting members for the new school year, and we’re excited to see the amazing things they will do with the opportunities we provide for them. We’re also encouraging members of Students Run LA, Cross Country, and Track to join Key Club so they can participate in Charity Miles while they get their training in. Super excited for what this year has in store, stay safe everyone!

LEUZINGER| CHARLES NGUYEN

SANTA MONICA| MADDIE LANDON Ahoy penguins! In the month of August, Santa Monica Key Club held a vice presidents and president meeting where we discussed our plans for our club this year in relation to zoom meetings and overall at home service. We made an instagram post to announce our first general meeting to our members, which will be on September 1st, 2020 at 2:15. We also had a board meeting where we brainstormed ideas for at home service events, this including: nursing home letters, letters and emails to teachers, and mask making. Lastly, our president, vice presidents, and webmaster gathered on zoom to make our google slide presentation for our first general meeting. This month was very effective in working on planning our year and the logistics of how we plan on being an effective club this year, despite our challenge of staying at home.

recaps

Howdy there folks! In the month of August, Leuzinger Key Club is, unfortunately, struggling financially with ASB. However, we are keeping our spirits up and we are working through the barriers that are put up against us. We had members participate in Charity Miles, which is an app that donates money for people who walk. We’ve also been contacting different companies about community service events and fundraising to get our club sailing again! With school starting this month, we are also contacting ASB and trying to collaborate with them to publicize our club to get more people to join, especially for the new freshies that have arrived at our school. Stay safe, take care, and drink some orange juice!

SPOTLIGHT WHAT’S ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBES KEY CLUB?

CAMILLE CASILES The word 'community' can be used to describe Key Club because it encompasses its different aspects. As members, our service in and for the community also allows us to become part of one ourselves by serving alongside others who are just as dedicated to giving back.

A word that i would describe key club as is eye-opening because of all the help that you’re contributing to your community while also genuinely having a good time. Although key club mainly focuses on community service, there are a couple of other events where one would just enjoy, making the club overall exciting.
