PIRATE PENGUINS

LTG Hello Division 19 North! WOW It’s November already, and we are officially past half-way through the term! First of all, I wanted to thank all of you who attended Region Training Conference! I was so happy and proud to see that over 150 of us were in attendance screaming our lungs out! And we even won the region spirit stick! I hope you all had a lot of fun, were able to bond with new people, and learned a lot of new skills that you could use within the clubs you serve! I am so proud to see the growth in the clubs, and I know there will be more! I have seen so much improvement and excitement, something that drives so many of us to serve more and more. And one more thing - Fall Rally South is quickly approaching! I know we’re all excited for the big day to come; it will definitely be an unforgettable experience for all of us! It will be one of the largest events of the term, so you won’t want to miss out! I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish, and I cannot wait to see what we will achieve in the future! Keep working hard (seniors hang in there!), and good luck with the rest of the year!

Waddling with a smile,

Christopher Soo-Hoo DIVISION 19 NORTH Lieutenant Governor

Search for Service! Written by: Division 19 North Service Expo Coord. Baylee Battle

Finding events can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! You don’t have to make events or find events on your own. There are many resources, including fellow members or officers that can help you in finding or coordinating service events. First, you can use other members. You can always hit up Baylee Battle, the division service expo coordinator, if you need help finding events. You can also refer to other clubs in the division for advice or ideas on events. When it comes to actual resources, there are websites you can use to help find events near you. A really great website to visit is volunteermatch.org . This website organizes events by location and type of event, based off of your preferences. Another great way to find events is to check with your school for any events they may be having, and see if they need help with any of them. Finally, another option is to check in with your local community center and see what upcoming events they have. Check with the director of the community center and see if they need help with their events. There are many ways to find events, and these are just a few, but you can always look in other places for events! Feel free to hit up Baylee Battle on facebook for help finding events, if you need any help!

Dues! Written by: Division 19 North Executive Assistant Celia Yu What is Club Rush? What time is it? Dues time! It's the time of the year to pay your dues! What are dues? Dues are annual payments to Key Club International to ensure that you continue to be a dues paid member. No events or service hours are counted until you have paid your dues! Payment is $11.50, but your school club may charge extra for donations. $7.00 goes to Key Club International, and $4.50 goes to our CNH District. The early bird deadline for dues is November 1st! The last day to pay your dues so they aren't late is December 1st. Put these dates on your calendar! Pay your dues to whichever board members are in charge, and they will ensure you are a dues paid member! Remember, this is very important because a member who has not paid dues would not be able to go to great events including DCON and Fall Rally! Get your dues in as soon as possible so you don't have to rush at the last minute! Many of you may not see the point of paying dues, but it is not only beneficial to Key Club International and the CNH District! All the money goes back to you, the members. An outline of what dues money includes is below:

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

PIRATE PENGUINS

In many countries, deliveries take place in unhygienic circumstances, putting innocent mothers and their newborn babies at risk of getting diseases. One of the diseases they can get is MNT.

MNT stands for maternal/neonatal tetanus. It has been the most common lethal consequence of unclean deliveries and umbilical cord practices. MNT can easily be prevented by immunizing mothers with tetanus vaccine and/or by hygienic deliveries.

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT cont.

With the help of Kiwanis International and Unicef, they founded the ELIMINATE Project. The ELIMINATE Project provides protection for millions of mothers and their babies from MNT. But there are still more in need of help, with just a donation of $1.80 you'll help protect a mother, along with her future babies.

Pediatric Trauma Program The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) was established in 1994 to decrease the amount of seriously injured or killed children due to traumatic and unintentional injuries. PTP provides funding to train pediatric doctors, nurses, first responders, and special equipment.

How do I help? We support Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) by developing local projects which will reduce the number of children, who are killed or injured by trauma. One of the major events we do, whose profit goes to PTP is Fall Rally! When you make a contribution to PTP, you provide grants to Kiwanis and their partner hospitals, allowing them to help more children in more communities.

CAMS Key Club had an exciting September full of service and planning! We had a total of 7 service projects, the most we ever had in a single month! The Hermosa Beach Fiesta Bike Corral was our first event of the month. That same weekend we helped out at Happy Birthday LA 5K, where we had a group of enthusiastic freshmen attend. Such enthusiasm was greatly appreciated since we were to cheer on participants while passing out water. The following weekend we helped out at the Lomita Fair. Here, we ensured a safe and clean environment by picking up trash and rebagging trash cans. The members were rewarded by being allotted some tickets to go on rides! The following week, we attended 3 events: the September DCM, the LA Music Festival, and the Green Festival. The LA Music Festival was definitely an event that a lot of us will never forget! CAMS Key Clubbers helped out at family booths and some members were fortunate enough to meet celebrities like Jessica Sanchez. Later on, we helped out at the Los Angeles International Ukulele Festival. We had a whopping number of at least 35 volunteers! The day after, Key Clubbers woke up early to cheer on and pass out water to runners at Alive and Running 5K. PAGE 18 | NOVEMBER 2016 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |

Other than service, CAMS Key Club has been hyping members up for RTC. At our general meetings, we have been practicing cheers, smiling and laughing as we go along. We are hoping to have at least 40 members attend RTC! We also tried to incorporate some team building and service by making dog toys at one of our meetings! Club Rush is also to take place soon and thus we have been planning what to do to encourage our fellow classmates to visit our booth. Our Fundraising Team has been working hard to gather items for our Garage Sale. All proceeds will be going towards PTP. Other than that, we have been discussing what merchandise to sell and a few possible designs. September has been a really busy month for CAMS Key Club, but it has also been a really fun month as well!

Many things have happened during the month of September for Da Vinci! We had our first meeting of the school year on the 13th and over 100 student attended! Hopefully this attendance number stays the same or increases throughout the year, as it has done for the past two meetings. Da Vinci also attended the September DCM and had over 20 members attend! It was fun to bond with the new members and have them learn the cheers and pie the presidents and the DLT in the face! We have done multiple service events over the past month. We first did the Coastal Clean Day at Manhattan Beach where our members picked up trash on the beach along with hundreds of other volunteers who joined the Coastal Clean Day. Then the El Segundo Richstone Family Street Fair where we had 17 members attend and help give out info, set up booths, and clean up trash. We also had some of our members help out at the St. Joseph Fiesta for all three days, where they sold paletas and helped clean up. We lastly attended the Kiwanis beach clean up where our members not only bonded with each other but also the members of D19S. In addition, we had our first bake sale of the year and raised $117! Thank you to all the members who attended these events and helped us raise money for our club! I am excited to see what else is to come for Da Vinci and hope our attendance at DCM’s and service events continue to grow! PAGE 20 | NOVEMBER 2016 | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER |

In the month of September our officers worked hard to prepare for club rush and recruitment as many new members as we could. During club rush, we had over 50 people sign up and at our first meeting a little more than 30 new people attended. We also helped our Kiwanis Club at their annual Richmond Street Fair by cleaning up trash and manning the information booth. Some of our members also participated in a South Bay Beach Clean-up to keep our stellar beaches sparkling. As the club starts to pick up with upcoming meetings, we are planning even more volunteer events and creating new incentive plans to encourage membership participation and growth. For the month of September Gardena, Key Club was hard at work with back to back Key Club events and having new member enjoy the purpose of serving their community. Throughout the past month, we had at Back to school Night, Food, Wine, and Cigar Festival, Least Tern colony cleanup, and the Heritage Festival. We all volunteered for long hours in the sun but kept a smile on our faces as we volunteered at many festivals with our local community center (Nakaoka). Back to school Night which took place Sept. 5 at 186th elementary school, most of the attendees were new members taking a role and volunteering at their first service event and many of them enjoyed the feeling of smiles give to them for the work that was done and jane the advisor of the school was very proud of these new members in hopes they return for their next years to volunteer with her. The Food, Wine and Cigar festival that took place at the Nakaoka Center on Sept. 24 we had about 15 members volunteer and each of us were assigned a food booth where they served guests who enjoyed the festival and served them samples of the food place they were assigned to for the whole event and a couple of members took upon the VIP Section and seated the guest to sit down and enjoy the music being played the day of the festival. In the end, we were rewarded 5 tickets to eat anywhere we wanted and members felt satisfied with their hard work and are eager for this event to come back next year and be first signed up to volunteer. | DIVISION NEWSLETTER | NOVEMBER PAGE 18 | OCTOBER 201619N | DIVISION 19N NEWSLETTER | 2016 | PAGE 23

Upperclassmen also had their last chance to volunteer at a yearly event 186th elementary school offers and we clean up a least tern colony, take little kids to birdwatch, and then prepare them a luncheon after their hard work cleaning up the species habitat in the middle of the sand. Bittersweet for the seniors who went every year and their last chance was given by Jane and we advise all underclassmen to sign up once you hear about this event because space is limited. Finally on October 1st members attended the Heritage Festival where members were assigned at specific booths and do the task they were given during the festival. This month was full of long and meaningful events that many enjoyed and having new members experience the purpose in what we do in Key Club as an organization. Gardena also has been approved for many fundraisers where we hope to see the division come together and support us as we support them, we’ve also gained an increase in membership activity at service events to member attendance at our weekly meetings.

So far this is the best we have seen Hawthorne develop! We began our term with a powerful Club Rush Day, in which we were overwhelmed with a flood of people and quickly ran out of flyers. The following week we had our first meeting. Our first event was Back-To-School night event in which we helped guide parents and assist in any way possible. The next event we had was a Karate Tournament. In this event we had timekeepers and scorekeeper keeping track of the fighter’s every move. Other were out helping with the food. We then had our Club Grub Day, in which we sold all of our food! The most recent fundraiser and last event of the month was Blaze Pizza, where some of our members enjoyed the delicious pizza for a good cause!

HMSA Key a club had a great month for September full of events and activities. We began the month with club dues collection and are excited to welcome 140+ members to our ohana! Our first event of September was the TLC Tree Musketeers event. Our members removed dead branches, planted and watered trees. The following weekend, HMSA Key Club volunteered at Heal the Bay’s annual Coastal Cleanup. Our club joined with Environmental club and had around 60 members participate. Right after the cleanup, 16 members attended our division’s September DCM. As the month passed by, we helped mini spirit sessions during our club meetings. On September 24, HMSA Key Club volunteered at Tree Musketeers again to help weed out the trees and nurture its surrounding soil. The following Sunday, we volunteered at LA’s Alive and Running Suicide Prevention 5k. It was astonishing to use key club’s spirit to cheer on participants. Our next event was the Kiwanis Beach cleanup with division 19 where members came to keep our sandy shores neat. Members had the chance to interact with others from both divisions and different schools. Later in the month, we announced the UNICEF’s trick and treat coin collection to help raise funds and awareness for maternal neonatal tetanus. We ended the month with Region 8 Training Conference admissions. We have 50 members who are ready to share their spirits and meet our loving Region 8! September was a busy month for our club. We started the month off with Club Rush, where we were able to get over 160+ sign ups to join the club! We had two members from last year dress up in a penguin suit to get people pumped up and intrigued to join Key Club, which was a great success. We had our first meeting of the term the following week, where we had 100+ people attend. We ended up running out of membership, video release, and medical release forms. This was exciting as this indicated that people were determined to stay in the club. We had a total of two service events this month, along with attending the DCM. Our first service event was City of Lawndale Cleanup, where members from Lawndale and Leuzinger walked around the city of Lawndale to pick up as much trash as they can. We were able to fill up about 15 bags of trash, which was awesome! Our other event was at Richmond Street Fair in Downtown, El Segundo. We helped set up chairs, tables, and trash bins around the fair. We also picked up trash occasionally during the event to keep the fair clean.

Joshua Visperas

For this month’s member, we have selected Joshua Visperas! Josh has been to an incredible variety of events in September including Hermosa Beach Fiesta, Happy Birthday LA 5k, Lomita Fair, and LA Music Festival. His dedication to Key Club has shown us that his bond with this club cannot be broken. We love his spirit and we are extremely grateful for his photography skills at our events! Congratulations to Josh!

Da Vinci Robert Montes

Robert is a new member of our Key Club family, but has already shown true dedication! At the Richmond Street fair, which was his first volunteering event, he immediately got to work with a smile and no questions asked. He has such a light and positive attitude that rubs off on the others around him and makes the events more fun. He is a great example of what it means to be a Pirate Penguin, especially when he volunteered at the fair for 10 HOURS. We truly appreciate the work he does and it really shows his leadership and dedication towards our club. We are so proud to present Robert as member of the month and can't wait to see him grow!
