PIRATE PENGUINS

Letter From The LTG Division 19 North, Thank you all for making my and the seniors’ last Fall Rally South, the best Fall Rally South ever. I am so proud of you all for making it to the Second Round. Throughout this term, I know we had our Carolyn Chang ups and downs and I am just here to say that I am proud of every single one of you. We will continue on this term as strong as we usually are, and we now can serve with more spirit, since we all know the cheers. But even though Fall Rally South is over, it does not mean the term is over! There are many events to still attend all the way up until the term ends in April. So attend the November DCM on Saturday, November 21st or the December DCM on Saturday, December 19th! Thank you to everyone for serving your best yet and I cannot wait to see what we will all achieve as a Division before April. Thank you all for making me a proud Lieutenant Governor to serve you all. Waddling to Serve, Carolyn Chang DIVISION 19 NEWSLETTER |DECEMBER 2015 | PAGE 3

Club Articles By Christopher Soo-Hoo

The month of October was an exciting month for CAMS Key Club. We started off the month volunteering at a rose garden where we maintained a museum’s various flowers. On that same day, we were able to help at the Gardena Heritage Festival where we ran several game booths. The following weekend, we joined the rest of our division and participated at the 6.2 mile AIDS Walk. On the 24th, CAMS Key Club helped out at the Rock and Roll Marathon, and on Halloween, we worked shifts at the Torrance Halloween Carnival. Asides from service, we have also been collecting donations from the Trick-or-Treat boxes for UNICEF. All of the donations will go to Project EliMiNaTe. As Fall Rally South is quickly approaching, CAMS Key Club will be practicing our division cheers, preparing our spirit gear, and sending out our PTP donation of $700 (our dream goal)! We cannot wait to see what November brings us!

The month of October was an exciting and service-filled month for Da Vinci Science Key Club! At the beginning of the month, El Segundo Key Club invited us to help out at the Richmond Street School Fall Festival! There, members ran many game booths for the community of El Segundo and had a lot of fun while doing so. The next day, members gathered together alongside the rest of Division 19 North at the October Spirit Day. There, members chanted, bonded, and learned the cheers of Fall Rally South. Then, on October 11th, Key Club members participated in the Los Angeles AIDS Walk, where they walked for three hours straight alongside the many other beloved Pirate Penguins. Together, Key Club helped to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS and those affected by it. In addition, Da Vinci also attended the Region 8 Training Conference, where members were able to show off their spirit and learn about the many different components of Key Club, such as: leadership positions, DCON, Conclave, Fall Rally South, and more! The next day, members also volunteered at One Incredible Family’s Halloween Trick-or-Treat Bag making event. Members put together and decorated Trick-or-Treat bags filled with toothpaste and other toiletries for at-risk youth and children affected by HIV and AIDS. Then, to end the month, Da Vinci volunteered alongside El Segundo Key Club to host and run booths for their Halloween Frolic in Main Street. Members had a lot of fun running game booths and seeing the energetic faces of the children dressed up in Halloween costumes. Overall, the month of October was an exciting, fun, and busy month for Da Vinci Science, and we are excited to celebrate all of the service we’ve completed this far at Fall Rally South!

UCLAK2C- AT UCLA Key to College, our members learned what getting into college requires, and seniors had their personal statement's edited.

K2CServiceProject- We made sleeping mats out of plastic bags to donate to homeless shelters.

This month we volunteered at the annual Richmond Street Elementary Fall Festival where we ran various game booths and the prize station. We also attended Region Training Conference where some of our members learned leadership, organization, and prioritization skills and made friends from the divisions amongst the region. They also learned more about their specific role within the organization and how they can work better in their role to make a more successful Key Club. Then, we were invited to UCLA’s Key to College and our members attended various workshops in preparation for college and seniors received help with their applications and personal statements. At the LA Cancer Challenge, our members helped at the race to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. Then to end the month, we helped children decorate little pumpkins at the annual El Segundo Halloween Frolic.

Woah, it's loud in here, there must be a Fall Rally coming soon in the atmosphere. October was the beginning of an exciting month where our key club members are preparing for the ride and time of their lives. We had a lot of service events which were mostly related to Halloween. Our highlighting event was creating our own Haunted House at Freeman Park. It took a duration of 6 days from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. including Halloween night. The house was decorated with horrifying monsters, lots of blood, and a creepy bunny. It was a new experience working and scaring our guests which resulted in gaining over $100 in donations. Speaking about blood, we had our annual UCLA Blood Drive where student at Gardena High donated blood. Another Halloween event was at 186th Elementary Halloween Carnival event where we cleaned up the hero-themed games and treats the students were partaking in. As of now, we're getting ready for Fall Rally because D19N of Region 8 is ready for that spirit stick!

These are several of our volunteers for the blood drive.

This here is a volunteer cutting hearts for the people who donated blood.

Club Articles By Nico Fernandez By Christopher Soo-Hoo

We had three events this past month at Hawthorne three being festive and traditionally October like, while the other being Halloween oriented. The AYSO soccer event at Dana Middle School is a fun filled annual community event that our club loves to volunteer at. Each year a larger part of the community decides to visit the event from police officers, to fire fighters, paramedics, SWAT cars, and random citizens of the city who own horses and either goats or sheep for children to pet. During the event our members were spread out some doing face painting and setting up food while others had more physically demanding tasks to complete. The event’s goal is to provide a quality soccer experience for children and adults whose physical or mental disabilities make it difficult for them to successfully participate on mainstream soccer teams. Meaning that many disabled children play soccer throughout the entire day of the event. Many of the disabled children got assigned a partner from one of the volunteers and the volunteer’s job was to run back and forth across the field the entire day simply keeping the kids company as they play soccer against one another. The event is extremely fun filled for all members and also very exhausting. Besides having to run all day watching over kids a huge part of the day went into putting on costumes and interacting with the kids as well. Many volunteers put on either power ranger costumes, Scooby Do costumes, or even Minion costumes from Despicable Me. Extremely fun community awareness event with food and drinks, characters, golf, K9 Dogs, a horse, trackless train, ambulance, armored Truck, fire truck, music, and the chance for volunteers to be amazed by how uplifted and highly spirited many children of disabilities can always be. The Spooktacular event was phenomenal and loved by the volunteers because of its Halloween oriented purpose.

PIRATE PENGUINS There were three days to the event the first day of the event was on Thursday purely oriented on setting up tables blowing up props and setting up a very kid friendly haunted house slash maze. Friday was the actual event in which vast numbers of small children in there costumes came to Dana Middle School ready for candy and ready for fun. Small little carnival games were set up for the amusement of the kids along with arts and crafts, the most fun being painting activities. The kids came to have fun and to receive most importantly candy but the members had a blast and several of them once again eager to jump into costumes laughed away the day with kids. One member in a Minion costume kept trying to whip which was pretty hilarious. The Saturday portion of the event was purely tear down of the haunted house and clean up after the event. The pumpkins in the park event this past month was also on the 10nth which split volunteers into groups that would clean up, decorate pumpkins with children, carnival game stations, and food stations. The members who helped with food helped with small concession stands. The lucky members were able to spend the day painting and decorating pumpkins. Some members worked small carnival like games were kids at the event could do bean bag tosses and such. Some of the members were just designated to walk around picking up trash. The buddy walk on the 4th of this month was very close to being considered a bust. By the time we arrived with volunteers to begin the event the people in charge of the event had already begun cleaning up. The event was meant to be a walk with disabled children mainly down syndrome, but by the time we got there at the beginning of the event the officials said we could walk around but that our services would not be needed. We did get to pass our water for a short time to the kids walking. Besides our events I have been practicing the cheers weekly with my club and we cannot be any more excited for fall rally south.

Club Articles By Christopher Soo-Hoo Ricardo Almazan ByBy Christopher Soo-Hoo

The month of October was really productive for HMSA Key Club. We kicked off the month by hosting presentations for Freshmen about the general things Key Club does. We were lucky enough to pull them out of their classes and excite them about all the service we do. Following these weeks, members were able to bond with their division at the AIDS Walk and October Spirit Day. Although both days resulted in members regretting to ever learn to walk or yell, their spirits were elated for their service and spirit demonstrated. Region Training Conference followed these weekends with the division. This event pumped up members; they were inspired by the LTGs and Region 8 to do better. They all look forward to Fall Rally South and serving their club even more due to this event! We continued our momentum with the following weekend by volunteering at the AYSO Friendship Festival and Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. At the Festival, we helped out with set up, clean up, and any general duties with our Kiwanis branch. We also played soccer with the athletes the festival was dedicated to. The Pier to Pier Walk was a really fun event; we passed out waters and snack bars to walkers at the midway point. These events were perfect to close a busy schedule of weekend volunteering. We closed the month by volunteering at the Hawthorne Halloween Carnival where we passed out candy to kids and ran several booths. We even started our Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF where we were able to get a great amount of donations. October was really exciting; we hope to keep this momentum as we enter November. Members are really excited at what this club has coming for them in November as well as Fall Rally South!

The month of October has been very busy for Lawndale Key Club! We started off by volunteering at the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair where we supervised children at inflatable jumpers. There is an increase in membership attendance in divisional events this year, such as the Fall Rally Spirit Prep Day, the Los Angeles AIDS Walk, and Region Training Conference! Many of our members have already memorized the cheers and the remix and are ready to scream their lungs out during Fall Rally! Towards the end of October, we volunteered at the Hawthorne Memorial Center for the Halloween Spooktackular Carnival. We ran booths for children and met HMSA Key Club members. Also, our members have been fundraising for Trick or Treat for UNICEF for the duration of a month and have already exceeded the fundraising goal of $250! We have so much planned for the following months and we’re BEE-yond excited to carry out these ideas! The club is showing a lot of growth and I feel very fortunate to be here for all of the excitement! DIVISION 19 NEWSLETTER |DECEMBER 2015 | PAGE 18

Even though leaves are starting to fall, CAMS Key Club is proud to say the spirit of Melanie Ferrer never does! Although the school year has just begun, this penguin has gone to many events already; from lengthy marathons to carnivals (even on Halloween!) to divisional DCMs– I am proud to call her our member of the month! She goes above and BEEyond what’s expected, not only at these events, but at school and in her everyday life. She actively publicized during our club rush, assisted greatly for PTP week, and even convinced others to join key club. Bursting with joy and love, she has a BEEutiful personality and I know she’s going to leave a bright legacy, both in key club and life.

The member of the month for the month of October is Zach Tully. We are glad to award Zach because he has started off this year as a brand new member not knowing a thing about Key Club and has now branched his passion by constantly coming to meetings and events. He has attended Regional Training Conference, multiple community events and the First Spirit Day in future plans to attend Fall Rally at Six Flags this year. We hope to see Zach's Passion for Key Club continue growing into the future.

Her work never goes unnoticed because of her hard work ethic and reliability. Congratulations Amber for being El Segundo Key Club’s Member of the Month!

Hey penguins! I hope you all had a sp00ky Halloween because I'm sure Mariel did. Mariel has shown a tremendous growth in Key Club. Whenever there are last minute events she makes the time to go right over there even after tennis practice. Just a week ago we were preparing for a Haunted House. Each day of the week she came to help set up and the day of she helped us fundraise and scare everyone that came to support! Her outstanding contribution to the club is appreciated and recognized. Mariel also had her little sister join which shows the example she sets when new members join. I hope to see her passion for Key Club and service grow. I'm Melanie Ferrer and I'm a freshman at CAMS đ&#x;˜Š Getting the chance to attend Fall Rally South for the first time was soo amazing, and I had such a great time showing my spirit and celebrating what we've done for PTP with CNH! Everyone there was super nice and welcoming, so it was just such a great experience to meet so many new peopleâ?¤ My favorite moments of that day were getting all those endless free hugs, riding the scary rides with my closest friends/new friends, and walking around the whole park holding Piplup! Thank you so much Carolyn for all of your hard work and everything you've done for us!! đ&#x;?§đ&#x;’™

Fall Rally South 2015 was one of my best Key Club experiences of my three years in high school. I have gone to Fall Rally ever since I was a freshmen, and every year, it gets better and better. Not only was it a great time to show off our Pirate Penguin spirit to other CNH divisions, but also a time to celebrate all the money Key Clubs have donated for the Pediatric Trauma Program to save children from being injured or dying because of traumatic unintentional injuries. Knowing that Division 19 North raised over $2,500 for this cause makes me proud as I walked around Six Flags screaming our cheers and remix. Fall Rally South had been one of my first events when I had first joined Key Club, and it was definitely one of the most inspiring. Seeing so many Key Clubbers united under one cause of saving children has shown me how much of a difference we truly make in the world. We do more than scream “WE FEEL GOOD we are saving lives. I hope Fall Rally was just as inspiring to everyone, so we can all continue to serve the community and change the world.

My experience in Fall Rally South 2015 made me fall in love with key club more. Though it was my first time attending Fall Rally South, it has been one of my best key club experiences. The sight of the massive amount of key clubbers everywhere made me truly happy. I met so many amazing people from all over the California-Nevada Hawaii District, cheered with my fellow Division, hugged many members, and so much more. I’m am extremely thankful for joining key club, and for meeting everyone I encountered. I saw so many motivated members, it was heart-warming. I’m proud to be able to call them my “ohana,” because they’re my precious family. I nearly lost my voice from all the cheering during Fall Rally South, and not to mention got lost multiple times in the amusement park, but overall I loved every second of it.
