PIRATE PENGUINS

LTG Hello Division 19 North! This term is truly whizzing past our eyes, and it’s December already! But first of all, congratulations to all of us for winning that spirit stick at Fall Rally! I hope you all had a blast at this memorable experience. However, even though we won, that does not mean Key Club comes to a stop! We still have plenty of exciting events waiting for you! If you are interested in running for Lieutenant Governor, go to Candidate Training Conference! It will take place on December 10th in Fullerton. Please check the CTC page for more details. We will be electing the next Lieutenant Governor soon in January. Exciting!

I am so proud to see the growth in the clubs, and I know there will be more! I have seen so much improvement and excitement, something that drives so many of us to serve more and more. I am so proud of what we have been able to accomplish, and I cannot wait to see what we will achieve in the future! Keep working hard, seniors good luck with college applications, and make the best of the rest of the year!

Waddling with a smile,

Christopher Soo-Hoo DIVISION 19 NORTH Lieutenant Governor

Search for Service! Written by: Division 19 North Service Expo Coord. Baylee Battle

Finding events can be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! You don’t have to make events or find events on your own. There are many resources, including fellow members or officers that can help you in finding or coordinating service events. First, you can use other members. You can always hit up Baylee Battle, the division service expo coordinator, if you need help finding events. You can also refer to other clubs in the division for advice or ideas on events. When it comes to actual resources, there are websites you can use to help find events near you. A really great website to visit is volunteermatch.org . This website organizes events by location and type of event, based off of your preferences. Another great way to find events is to check with your school for any events they may be having, and see if they need help with any of them. Finally, another option is to check in with your local community center and see what upcoming events they have. Check with the director of the community center and see if they need help with their events. There are many ways to find events, and these are just a few, but you can always look in other places for events! Feel free to hit up Baylee Battle on facebook for help finding events, if you need any help!

Dues! Written by: Division 19 North Executive Assistant Celia Yu What is Club Rush? What time is it? Dues time! It's the time of the year to pay your dues! What are dues? Dues are annual payments to Key Club International to ensure that you continue to be a dues paid member. No events or service hours are counted until you have paid your dues! Payment is $11.50, but your school club may charge extra for donations. $7.00 goes to Key Club International, and $4.50 goes to our CNH District. The early bird deadline for dues is November 1st! The last day to pay your dues so they aren't late is December 1st. Put these dates on your calendar! Pay your dues to whichever board members are in charge, and they will ensure you are a dues paid member! Remember, this is very important because a member who has not paid dues would not be able to go to great events including DCON and Fall Rally! Get your dues in as soon as possible so you don't have to rush at the last minute! Many of you may not see the point of paying dues, but it is not only beneficial to Key Club International and the CNH District! All the money goes back to you, the members. An outline of what dues money includes is below:

CAMS Key Club had a hectic but wonderful month of October. We started the month off with club rush where we had over 100 signups. (In fact, we were the club who attracted long lines)! Our favorite time of the year also came by: Dues Season. Although it was a bit hectic, we did see many new members, especially freshman registering! A lot of them are very spirited and eager to serve and we cannot wait to see them grow throughout the rest of the school year. Other than that, we hosted our very own Garage Sale where we fundraised almost $200. It was a very fun experience as we tried to bargain with people in the community. The items not sold were then donated to an organization at our school.

Of course, we did not forget about service! We had a total of 8 service projects this month (probably one of the most we ever had)! On the same day, we helped clean up the beach with Division 19 South and helped out at the local Garage Heritage Festival (an event recommended by our Kiwanis advisor). We then helped out at several walks/runs such as Kickin’ Cancer, LA Kidney Walk, Walk4ALZ, AIDS Walk, and Sketcher’s Pier to Pier Friendship. Other than those we helped out at the Thyroid Cancer Survivor’s Conference. With Fall Rally around the corner, we cannot wait to celebrate service and funds raised for PTP!

This month has been full of events, from service events to club events. One of the bigger service event this month was the AIDS walk, where we had over 30 members attend. This was important for our members to attend because the AIDS walk is a great place to not only take a break from midterms but also bond with the rest of the division. While, the AIDS walk was an event we advertised a lot, we still attended other service events as well, such as the Sketchers Pier to Pier Friendship walk, the Richstone Halloween Party, and the El Segundo Halloween Frolic. In addition to attending service events, we were also apart of fundraisers such as hosting a fundraiser at Blaze Pizza where we made $50 and helping our Youth & Government club at our school by donating hygiene and sanitary products for the homeless in Fresno, CA. We have already donated over 100 items! We are all excited for November, especially because of Fall Rally! We have been preparing by staying after school and practicing the cheers and hosting joint spirit rallies with HMSA. This month has been very busy for us and we are excited to see what is to come in November! KALYN ATKINSON | DAVINCI KEY CLUB PRESIDENT

For the month of October Gardena Key Club has been busy waddling for success and even with half the term over, we've accomplished so much. Such as fundraising money for PTP, increasing member retention, to having more members attend service events. I'm proud as President to say we've increased Club activity this year and only strive for this legacy to keep going. To start off, Gardena had a fundraiser at Chipotle where we raised $650 and we couldn't be any more appreciative for the people who came out to support and purchased food. We also had our yearly blood drive with UCLA and our VP Michael Valderama hosted a successful blood drive! Then members got the chance to walk the AIDS walk and underclassmen really enjoyed this specific event, and even said it felt more like 1 mile than 6 in total. One week prior Halloween we started to set up for a Haunted House at Freeman Park, and leading to the day of Halloween members got the chance to scare the attendees of the Haunted House and we also raised donations for our club , raising over $100 that night. We ended our month with serving at our local Elementary School, 186th by helping out with collating papers and stuffing envelopes that the school needed for the administration to be sent out also with extra time after accomplishing the stacks of work they helped out with any help that was needed in the school. With Fall Rally approaching Gardena Key Club plans to have to spirit prep days or what we like to call our “Penguin Prep Days in order to take that W for Fall Rally. All these accomplishments this past month has only showed the capacity that Gardena Key Club can surpass and only keep striving for more success for the future underclassmen that will lead the club. We keep growing and had over 49 members pay for their dues in one month and even had them turn in their UNICEF boxes on time raising over $200. Gardena Key Club has shown tremendous growth and activity and make me serving as their President proud of their dedication to this amazing organization and show their love by doing such great causes.

For the month of October, our club had many events going on. We began the month with the Aloha 5k run, in which we saw other Key Club members from around the division! Then we had our fundraiser in the beginning of the month at Blaze Pizza where our members enjoyed some delicious fresh pizza. A week later we had an event in which member helped clean out the Hawthorne museum, and some of them got to keep some of the amazing things which were there. That same week we had our members help out the library in an event they were having. Later that weekend we had a Out of the Darkness Walk. In this event our members learned some values and got a lot out of this event. By this time, we began a clothing drive, in which we paired up with another club in our school to collect clothes for about three weeks to donate it. The following week we had an AYSO soccer event. Later that week we gave an option to our member to grab a box and go around collecting donations for UNICEF. That same weekend we a Friendship walk in which we cheered and helped pass out things like water and medals. Later that day we had another event which was the One Incredible Family event in which our members made trick-or-treat bags for children in need. Another event that we had in this of October was a Spirit day with HMSA and we learned all the cheers our members need to know for upcoming Fall Rally!

In the month of October, HMSA key club had an eventful month with a total of 14 events. Our first event was a joint beach clean-up with Division 19 south on October 1st; members gathered together to decrease the amount of trash polluting the beach. The following day, members volunteered at Kickin’ Cancer by cheering on members, passing out water and creating penny rockets with the children. On October 8th, fifty members attended

Region Training Conference where our gR8 division ohana won the spirit stick! On October 12th, HMSA key club hosted a Mc. Donald’s Fundraiser and raised $70 for the Pediatric Trauma Program. The following week, Hawthorne’s BBQ Night was a spectacular service event where members served delicious, barbeque chicken dinners to our community’s board members and officers. Throughout the month, members have been collecting UNICEF Trick & Treat donations that will soon be collected and counted; all donations go towards the EliMiNaTe project. On October 22, two events took place: Walk for Alzheimer’s and AYSO Soccer Festival. At the walk, members helped with the event’s set-up, water stations, and cheer booths. At the soccer festival, members played with participants and helped run booths/games. The following day on October 23, we had two events: AIDS Walk and Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. In a challenge to spread awareness, the Pirate Penguins walked 6.2 miles along with other participants and divisions at AIDS walk. At skechers walk,

members helped with set-up/clean-up, and also handed water, Kind bars and other sponsored items to participants of the walk. On October 29, five dedicated members attend UCLA’s Key to College and gained important information regarding colleges. Right after CKI’s Key to College, members volunteered at Hawthorne’s Halloween

Carnival by running fun mini-Halloween games and distributed candy. On October 30th, HMSA Key Club ended the month with an LA Cancer Challenge event at UCLA and a Fall Rally South Spirit Day at the park; We are FRS READY!

For the month of October, Lawndale Key Club has been involved with a variety of different service events, fundraisers, and division events. We had a total of seven service events in the month of October. Our first event was a joint beach clean-up at Dockweiler State Beach with D19S. We had our second event the next day, which was called Kickin

Cancer where our members helped with setup and cleanup when the event was over. Our next event was on the 22nd, which was Tree Musketeers. Our members walked along Imperial Hwy to pick up trash and remove weeds in order to plant new trees. The next day, we had two service events, where we participated in the AIDS Walk to spread awareness for AIDS, and had the Pumpkin Race event at Manhattan Beach where members supervised the participants. On the 29th, we participated in the Halloween Carnival at Manhattan Heights Park where members helped setup the event, took charge of one of the carnival games, and collected tickets from customers at the event. On the 30th, we took part of the LA Cancer Challenge 5k/10k walk/run at UCLA, where members cheered on runners to encourage them to finish the race. We took part of RTC and the spirit day on the 30th as well. At RTC, members were able to learn more about the board positions and what they are expected to do throughout the term. Members were able to learn more about what the purpose of Key

Club is. At the spirit day, members were able to practice cheers in preparation for Fall Rally. For fundraisers, we received our UNICEF boxes and began to collect donations. We fundraised for PTP as well at our Senior Night game for football. We sold ice cream with

different toppings and was able to make a profit of $35. Before Fall Rally, we hope to sell churros after school to make at least a profit of $40-50. Essentially, this month has been extremely productive for our club!

It is our great pleasure to announce JOYCE LEE as our October Member of the Month. Only within about three months into the school year, Joyce has exhibited true dedication to Key Club. Not only does she show excitement and spirit during division events such as RTC and DCMs, she has gone to majority of the events since the school year started. Her joy to serve the community has been a positive influence for other freshman to join Key Club as well. She has even already chaired her first event, 19S and 19N Joint Beach Cleanup event where she proved her leadership! That is why we have great pride to say that Joyce is our October Member of the Month of CAMS Key Club.

We are so excited to present our member of the month ANGELA MAGAT for the month of October! Although she is a small freshman, she can be very loud and spirited when cheering. She has been to numerous of volunteering events in the past couple of months and has proven how dedicated she is to the club. Also, we have watched her love for Key Club grow more and more after every event, which is an amazing sight. She always brings so much joy to events and always shines with her adorable cat ears. Congrats Angela! We’re so proud of you!

In every Key club there is always that one person who just doesn’t stop smiling and never fails to stay positive. Although people have ups and downs that person always stays lively. This month’s member of the month is this person. MICHAEL VALDERAMA our Vice Pres. for Gardena KC always tries to keep everyone in the light. No matter how an event goes he is always there to boost up the spirits of others. His dedication to serving his community also proves him worthy of being this month’s Member of the Month. He is always service ready at times need and makes sure that everyone in the club is on the same page.

SAAD TOOTLA is Hawthorne High

Key Club’s member of the month for October. Saad deserves member of the month because he went to almost all of the events in October. Saad always shows he cares about Key Club and the community, even when he has to wake up super early he is still smiling and happy to be helping out. Saad Tootla is a freshman who has been in Key Club since the start of the school year. Saad is a fun guy and is always there to help. This is why we have selected him to be our member of the month for October.

HMSA Key Club is proud to present ALEXIA GUTIERREZ as our October member of the month. Alexia is an amazing freshman who has shown outstanding dedication to Key Club. Alexia has attended almost all the events in the month of October and we are grateful for members like her. She brings positivity to the club and embodies how impactful Key Club is. Alexia makes the time to be a part of all the amazing events that we have in the club and we hope she can continue this consistent dedication to Key Club events. We admire her diligence and for that we have no doubt in her ability to grow as a member of Key Club.

This month’s member of the month is CELEST AYALA. Celeste has been going to every service event so far that we put out and has never complained about the time, nor how early it is. Since this is her first year in key club, she doesn’t know many people. But, she seems to always be happy to meet new people. She’s attending fall rally this year and she remembers all the cheers, and says the cheers with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. I’m happy to say that she is one of the many dedicated members in our club

For the month of October, we had chosen TRUC TRAN as our member of the month because although this is her second year in key club, she still continues to show constant enthusiasm and dedication even when it is as simple as going to the meetings every week or attending to the community services. We are happy to say that Truc is our October member of the month! Her dedication and hard work for our club stands out to us as well as to others and we hope to see her grow as time goes on

Ways to be more involved in Key Club: • Attend club meetings and monthly DCMs! • Participate in volunteering events, fundraisers, etc! • Help out your board members! Ask if there’s anything that you can do! • Show dedication and spirit! • Develop more relationships with people both in your club and the division! • Have fun!
