PIRATE PENGUINS

Letter From The LTG Division 19 North, Thank YOU for everything you have done as a division. I cannot wait to see you all at banquet and, for those of you attending, District Convention! As these last few weeks, I will be serving as your Lieutenant Governor and soon Chris Soo-Hoo will serve as the next Lieutenant Governor. Thank you for trying your best to serve this service organization and leaving your legacy with the division. I am sincerely proud of you all for everything you have accomplished and done. Please remember to reflect about the positives of this term, and thank the key players, the advisors, adults, chaperones, and especially the members. It is a bittersweet ending to end this term, however I know you all will accomplish much more next term. Remember to make the most of everything because one day it will go by so fast. Again, thank you for one last time. For one last time, Waddling to Serve, Carolyn Chang

CAMS KeyClub

This 29-day February was a great month for CAMS Key Club! We started off the month volunteering at a local math competition for middle school students called Mini-MathCounts by grading papers and monitoring the lunch breaks. Later in February, we volunteered at a water station for the LA Marathon. Although we were not able to volunteer with other 19 North clubs, we still had a great time! The following weekend, we planted trees in Long Beach while gardening and cleaning the Gardena Willows Preserve, and finally, we ended the month by volunteering at a bigger middle school math competition – MathCounts. CAMS had also started electing its officers for the upcoming term. Although elections were not held for all positions, the upcoming board will all be determined in March. By Christopher Soo-Hoo

Da Vinci Science The month of February was a lovely month for Da Vinci Science Key Club! For the month of February, Da Vinci announced the results of the elections for the 2016-2017 term, so it was a very exciting time! On February 1st, Da Vinci volunteered alongside Interact Club to create and decorate Valentine’s Day Cards for the elderly at Shakey’s Pizza Restaurant! Soon after, we had a member volunteer at the One Incredible Family’s Valentine’s Day Card Making event, where she helped to decorate and create cards for children whose families are affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty. Then Key Club members, including the new board, also attended the Division 19 North Ice Skating Fundraiser and had a great time bonding with the rest of the division. On Sunday, February 14th, Da Vinci spent Valentine’s Day alongside El Segundo and Lawndale Key Club at the Los Angeles Skechers Marathon! Members passed out cups of gatorade, water, and cheered on the runners as they made their way past mile twenty. Members and officers also attended the Division Council Meeting on Friday, February 19th, and had a lot of fun participating in the various inclusivethemed icebreakers and activities. Da Vinci’s current board also had a board meeting in order to discuss the schedule and process for Pasta for Pennies, and we will be working very closely with the new board in order to train them for future fundraisers and events. Overall, the month of February was a spectacular month for Da Vinci Key Club, and we are very excited to see what the month of March has in store for us! By Christian Cisneros

El Segundo Key Club February emphasized division bonding for El Segundo Key Club. At the Division Ice Skating Fundraiser, our members ice skated with other schools and became better friends. Then, at the Los Angeles Marathon, we worked alongside Da Vinci and Lawndale to distribute water and Gatorade to runners. At the February DCM, our members had the opportunity to talk to the friends they made at the ice skating fundraiser and make new friends while learning new cheers. Then to conclude the month, our club worked with Tree Musketeers to prepare for Arbor Day by tending to previously planted trees and clearing the areas where new trees would be planted. This was a wonderful month full of division bonding that we hope to continue into next term.

Gardena Key Club The month of February is where love fills the air and nothing beats the air that surrounds teamwork and service within our community. Regarding our division event, our key clubbers went to the February Division Council Meeting at Hermosa Kiwanis Hall. It was an enjoyable time seeing our division bond together. We also played a lot of icebreakers and it was such an honor to see Jeremiah Balasabas represent our club as “Member of the Month”. We are proud of you, say we are proud of you Jeremiah! My personal favorite was learning Carolyn Chang’s cheer: “Yeah we got the spirit, Yeah we got the beat, We're the pirate penguins that you can't defeat”. (There’s actually more lines to that, but if you’re interested, I recommend asking Carolyn). With our usual community partners, we assisted the celebration of Black History Month with the Nakaoka Center. We were assigned with the swimming pool booth and the bracelet making booth. It was a crowded event full of spirit and fun. It was entertaining, playing with the beads and designing our own colorful bracelets. We also had Family Literacy Night at 186th Elementary in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday and the importance of books and reading. Our members helped sold drinks and food at the concession stand, went in different reading rooms, and gave workbooks out to the children. We recently had nominations and before we head off into our Spring Break, our club is anticipating a thrilling election for the next 2016 - 2017 Board. By Tina Duong

Hawthorne Key Club This month for Hawthorne we volunteered at the Los Angeles marathon we took around a good 15 individuals to the actual event. The event was extremely meaningful and inspiring for the members. I could see how the members bonded as the day progressed and how they longed for runners to take water from their hands. Setting up was exciting but not as fun for the members as the tear down process of the stands. We were allowed to topple over the refreshment stands which put huge smiles on the members faces. It was a day full of inspiration and unification for the club. Several of our members ran the marathon and we drenched them with water when they reached out mile post. Next week we are having the candidates running for cabinet positions give their speeches, and we will proceed by leaving it up to the members through anonymous ballots to select next year's candidates. We are excited to see who will be our next cabinet next week. We are also excited to start training the new cabinet for an ever better up and coming year for the club.

HHS Key Clubbers volunteered at the LA Marathon on Valentine's Day. It was very exciting to see how many people run the marathon in all types of conditions, our club members really enjoyed it. Our second event was a poster making event after school to support Hawthorne High's volley ball team.

HMSA Key Club The month of February was a month looking forward. Although members were not as active as we hoped, we were still able to get things done and plan for the future. The first priority for the month was the have our club elections for our future officers. We’re happy to say that HMSA Key Club successfully elected the officers of the future board. We are also excited to announce them at our future DCM. In addition, the club took part in our annual Pennies for Patients. Members went from classroom to classroom talking to students and teachers alike talking about this cause. We showed videos and encouraged them with incentives. The Pennies for Patients donations actually ended pretty recently and we’re happy to say that we raised at least $1000 for cancer patients. Looking for events was a challenge but we remain elated and look forward to the events in March and April, and what the new board will have to offer. By Ricardo Almazan

Lawndale Key Club

February was a very fun month for Lawndale Key Club! We kicked off the beginning of the month with another Tree Musketeers event, where we mulched trees and cleared the area in preparation for their biggest event of the year: Arbor Day! We learned about the area and the trees’ importance to filter the air pollution from LAX to the El Segundo neighborhood, making our efforts to tend the trees even more meaningful. Right after, our members, as well as other Lawndale High School students, supported Project EliMiNaTe by attending the division ice skating event! Also, our club hosted their club elections and we’re very excited to have officer trainings throughout the month of March to ensure the next term starts off strong! Our members also had a joint event with Da Vinci Science and El Segundo Key Club at the Los Angeles Marathon, where we passed out water and Gatorade to the participants and cheered for them as they made it to Mile 20! Overall, the month has been quite productive for our club, and we’re eager for what March awaits us. By Vivian Nguyen

Leuzinger Key Club

For the month of February, Leuzinger Key Club participated in exciting and enjoyable events. We volunteered at the LA Marathon EXPO where volunteers were assigned a booth and handed out tshirts and goodies bags to the runners. Not only did we have fun handing out the goodies bags and tshirts, we also enjoyed looking around the EXPO! Then, the following week, some Leuzinger Key Club board members attended February DCM where we were able to bond with and meet other key clubbers and also learn cheers. Lastly, for the month of February we also volunteered for the Feed My Starving Children organization where volunteers packed meals for the children.

Rita Nguyen

Springing toward the end of the term, Rita Nguyen has definitely been a busy bee. Despite joining up this fall as a freshman, she has the dedication of a lifelong member. I've never seen her give 99% or even 100%- it's always above and BEEyond with this key clubber. With pirate penguin as her spirit animal, she never gives up, inspirational to everyone who sees her devotion to service and to key club. Whether it's begging parents for a ride somewhere far and early, constantly looking for opportunities to serve, or simply encouraging others with a persistent smile, she proves that there's no such thing as "just a member." CAMS Key Club is so proud to recognize Rita as our member of the month.

Tami Yanagida

As the term comes to an end the service that Tanmi shows never ends! Tanmi Yanagida is our member of the month folks. With a very bubbly personality she never fails to give a hand at events. I saw a potential penguin the moment I saw her and I've seen her grown so much as a member to running for a board position. Tanmi also helped when our club needed member recruitment by welcoming her tennis friends to join Key Club. What's better than service than doing it with friends at the same time? With one year left we hope to see her dedication for Key Club only grow. Congrats Tanmi, keep waddling for service!

This month the member that really stood out was Deandre Gimeno. Deandre goes above and beyond for key Club and is always very enthusiastic and spirited. This month Deandre was very active in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser and was enthusiastic all throughout elections. Deandre has been a big help when it comes to member recruitment. He encourages everyone he meets to join Key Club and is very friendly and helpful with freshmen and new members. Deandre is an example of what it looks like to love service and serving your community. Deandre is an exemplary member and he really works hard to make sure our members feel comfortable and included.
