WELCOME Welcome to our new look brochure, showcasing the diverse range of events coming to the New Theatre Royal over the coming months. Having recently become a Portsmouth resident, I’m thrilled by the creative energy bubbling away under the surface of this great International city. It’s an eclectic place, with wonderful possibilities and opportunities. We look forward to being just as eclectic as we move forward into 2018 and beyond, from our base in the City Centre, into our communities and beyond. I’m thrilled to announce that as of 2018, the New Theatre Royal will receive a 169% investment increase from Arts Council England, one of only 8.4% of venues across the country to attract an increase, in recognition of what we, and Portsmouth, have to offer. With your interest and involvement, we can ensure that the next generation has access to arts and culture- stimulating creativity and innovation alongside education, business and science, and contributing to being a dynamic place to live and work. There really isn’t anything like a live theatre experience, and we’re passionate about bringing as diverse a range of shows to as many people as possible. We’re also introducing banded ticket pricing, to offer more choice, as well as many more early booking offers. We’ve also introduced £10 tickets to many performances, allowing under 25s the opportunity to visit for less. We are delighted to present two brilliant seasons of Dance and Theatre, each one including six world-class productions from the UK and beyond. This Autumn also sees the launch of our new performance space - StageHouse is a flexible and immersive space for cutting edge, relevant theatre for today. Finally, do keep an eye out for the many family shows coming to the New Theatre Royal in the coming months. We’re particularly proud to be producing a brand new large-scale Christmas musical for all the family - Beauty and the Beast. Make sure you don’t miss this beast of a show, in what is sure to be the classiest ticket in town this Christmas. We look forward to seeing you soon

Doctor Henry Jekyll is a good man. Successful within his field and well respected. He’s close to a neurological discovery that will change medical science forever.
This celebratory concert production features the outstanding Mario Kombou, star of acclaimed West End musical ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and is led by legendary musical director and Ivor Novello award-winner David Mackay. The complete theatrical experience.
However, his methods are less than ethical, and when a close friend and colleague threatens to expose and destroy his work, Jekyll is forced to experiment on himself, whereupon something goes very wrong … or very right. Suddenly Jekyll has a new friend, the brutal Edward Hyde.

COLLATE, INNOVATE & CREATE Every now and then we come across inspirational projects and performances that have a major impact not only on our lives, but the lives of all who experience them. Building on the foundations of our very own team we now have a new creative department with a shared goal of inspiring people to discover, sometimes re-discover a passion for trailblazing arts experiences. The Technology Gateway represents a new direction for the theatre, with our partners, the University of Portsmouth, we are excited to be progressing a variety of projects that offer artists accessibility to digital technologies, helping to enhance their work. This summer has already seen Motion Capture training in our Minghella Studio, filming of a 360 3D Virtual Reality fashion show in the main house which you can see in our open day (see page 5). This September, working with the Old Market Brighton, artists will explore the very edge of new technologies, to see what artists can create. We will be offering research and development for artists that use technology to hone their craft. This year our Creative Lab will support the work of Flow Observatorium, developing a go to place for neuro-divergent artists, and this September will see a ‘scratch’ performance of You Will Fail Her (see page 11), a live performance experience by dyslexic writers, followed by a panel debate on the current support offered from the education system. We are pleased to be welcoming internationally acclaimed Studio Wayne McGregor to the theatre with both a performance and residential creative project for over 50s, exploring his themes and methods used when choreographing. Wayne McGregor’s TED talk is just the starting point to understanding his choreographic technique and this residency is part of an on-going programme we have developed that brings world renowned international artists to our audiences. With all of our projects we will be opening our doors for you to see the beginnings of projects and performances allowing you to explore the creative developments of your theatre, we hope that you join us on this new journey.
