WELCOME Welcome to our Winter to Summer 2019 Season, bringing a thrilling range of theatre, music and dance to Portsmouth and South-East Hampshire over the coming months. As we increasingly bow our heads to the streaming screens of media, balancing our lives with live culture is as important as ever. The alchemy of a live event - real bodies and real noise- is vital and stirring. It gives perspective and binds us together. As one theatre-goer recently exclaimed, “It gave me the human connection I didn’t realise I was craving.” We’re indebted to Arts Council England and Portsmouth City Council for their support in bringing world-class productions and participation opportunities to your doorstep. Whether you are coming to see a live show, or to take part in a workshop, we’re proud to welcome you to Portsmouth and our 160-year-old theatre. We’re delighted to introduce two new fixtures to the South Coast calendar. New Theatre Royal - Festival of the Sea takes place across February, exploring our relationship with the waters that surround us. From May to June, look out for FLUX - Festival of Dance and Visual Theatre, with a thrilling range of work from some of the UKs top companies, including Wayne McGregor, Ockham’s Razor, and the Clod Ensemble. We’re also pleased to welcome Balletboyz to Portsmouth for the first time. We have two thrilling new family-friendly musicals coming to town this spring: In The Willows and The Jungle Bookdon’t miss either, whatever your age. In addition, look out for our diverse range of family-friendly theatre, including Dear Zoo, Cirque Enchantment, Romeo and Juliet, Dinosaur World, Horrible Histories, and The Tiger That Came To Tea. Discover the fascinating history of this beautiful theatre, from 1865 to the present day, and see first-hand behind the scenes of this Grade II listed National Treasure. Why Rutley’s?
In 1854 the Victorian circus showman Henry Rutley took over of the White Swan Pub, now the Brewhouse and Kitchen. He staged lavish spectaculars in the adjoining hall and before long, saw a demand for a new venue for entertainment. He built the New Theatre Royal as a very special place for plays, spectaculars and his tradition of large Christmas extravaganzas are still celebrated each year in the New Theatre Royal’s own show-stopping style. to make accessible theatre for audiences with profound and multiple learning disabilities, a group of people who are often the most excluded in society. All our work is multi-sensory and this is such an exciting medium to work in, it means we get to spend a lot of rehearsals playing with things that feel and smell nice.
Q How did Isle of Brimsker come about? A It came about through wanting to explore other ways to experience the shows music other than hearing it. Therefore the show features lots of vibrations, and sound activated lighting. We were thinking about sound waves which led us to exploring actual waves and then an island that is battered daily by the waves and who the characters would be that inhabit such a desolate place.
Q What does the sea mean to you? A The Isle of Brimsker is set on a
desolate Island in the midst of the north sea. It feels like a mystical place where the characters are at complete mercy to the elements. NEW WAYS TO TELL STORIES We talk to Jack Lowe, Artistic Director of Curious Directive about developing new bridges between art and science.
Q How would you describe Curious Directive’s approach to work?
A Our process is primarily led by
new ways to tell stories. We started the company with a piece of theatre exploring neuroscience and since then we’ve grown into a small family of theatre makers exploring life through the lens of science. We like to forge relationships with science communities and technology partners to create emotionally charged science-led theatre.
Q Where did the concept of Frogman come from?
A Frogman began life in 2014 in Bali,
when I was about to have my first scuba-dive. What followed was a threeyear journey creating this part live, part virtual reality experience, which also looks at a crime-drama from a different perspective.
Q What next for Curious Directive? A We’re working with the New Theatre
Royal and British Council on Refrain From Dreaming, which is about the human need to make art, from the Paleolithic period to today. We recently spent a week here in Portsmouth researching and developing the piece, and look forward to staging it at the New Theatre Royal and in Indonesia soon. A coming-of-age drama, supernatural thriller and pioneering integration of live performance and virtual reality, as you experience the 1995 storyline in a 360 degree VR environment. Q Tell us about the ideas behind Peril at Sea?
A We’ve been going to sea for
thousands of years. Despite all our advances in technology and science, the sea can still pose an incredible danger. Peril at Sea explores this danger, the potential threat. But the production is also a celebration of people and events associated with seafaring and maritime, making it ideal for the Festival of the Sea.

Q How has the show been developed? A We have intentionally developed and
created a show that will suit a variety of spaces and places. In addition to the Square Tower in Old Portsmouth, Peril at Sea is also visiting a decommissioned lightship, a working shipyard and a number of other community spaces. Touring this way opens up a wealth of exciting possibilities, for us and our audiences.
Q Where next for the production? A We’re visiting coastal communities
almost all the way round the country: along the south coast, into Cumbria and Scotland before finally docking in East Anglia. It’s so apt that we’re opening the show in Portsmouth – the home of the British Navy and starting point for so many sea-bound voyages. Join us in Portsmouth to wave us off! WEAVING MAGIC Meet John Sackett, director of The Front Room, which weaves poetry, music, storytelling and even film into intimate experiences.
Q How did The Front Room come about?
A A good friend had taken over a local
Cafe and was struggling with custom on mid-week evenings. She wanted to put on a music open mic night, knowing that there was a lot of creative talent, including poets, keen to present their work, and apart from one venue, there was no real outlet for them.
Q What drew you to being part of Festival of the Sea?
A Portsmouth is surrounded by the
sea and there are so many emotive elements. It’s been an inspiration for poets and film-makers since people were able to write and make films!
Q What’s next? A We started off in independent coffee
bars and whilst continuing this, we’re now taking The Front Room to other venues such as Southsea Castle, The Spring Arts Centre, and the New Theatre Royal’s StageHouse. This allows us to experiment with bigger more immersive events as well as attracting bigger names in the poetry scene. We’re also making a digital poetry film trail with an augmented reality, which is based on the heritage of Portsea, that we are very excited about!

Q Liz, what drew you to create Time and Tide?
A When I learned about The Festival
of the Sea and was asked if I would be interested in creating a piece I immediately said “Yes!” as I was sure that it would be a terrific opportunity for the NTR Players and NTR Dancers to work together again, but also to involve young people.

MY MOTHER SAID I NEVER SHOULD BY CHARLOTTE KEATLEY Set in Manchester, Oldham and London, My Mother Said I Never Should is a poignant, bittersweet story about love, jealousy and the price of freedom. The play details the lives of four women through the immense social changes of the twentieth century. Using a kaleidoscopic time structure, Charlotte Keatley’s story focuses on four generations of one family as they confront the most significant moments of their lives. In 1940, Doris, a former teacher, encourages her nine-year-old daughter, Margaret, to mind her manners and practise the piano. In 1969, Margaret’s relationship with her own daughter is strained, as art student Jackie experiments with her new-found sexual freedom. When Jackie becomes pregnant at 18 and has baby Rosie, a decision is made that will affect all their lives irrevocably. Mole’s first day in ‘The Willows’. The kids look a bit rough. Surely Mr Badger will look out for her, while hip-hop cool girl Rattie, rich kid rapper Toad and street-dancing Otter teach her the ways of the Riverbank. But when Toad gets locked up for joyriding, the Weasel Clan break in and squat his pad, the Pool Hall. Now it’s only a matter of time before Chief Weasel reveals Mole’s dark secret...

Status is a show about someone who doesn’t want his any more. About running away from the national story you’re given. About who is responsible for that story and what might happen to it if you give it up. A globespanning journey of attempted escape, with songs along the way.
Four strangers are about to become collateral damage in the government’s plans to create a hostile environment for illegal immigrants. Detained together after a random spot check in London, they begin to unravel in the pressure-filled holding room, where they are left without answers. Some of them are undocumented migrants, others insist they are not – but all are certain that the UK is their home. In this climate of Home Office blunders laid bare by the ongoing Windrush Scandal and Brexit, their lives unravel as Ilé La Wà asks ‘How Do You Belong to a Place That Doesn’t See You’?

SOMETHING NEW THIS WAY COMES We talk to director Suzy Willson and composer Paul Clark about their work with the Clod Ensemble, and adventurous audiences.
Q How did the Clod Ensemble begin? A We have been making performance as
Clod Ensemble for over twenty years. A review of our first show in 1995 described us as ‘resisting categorisation’. Although we didn’t deliberately set out to do that, we still seem to. Our work is visceral, highly visual and always a meeting place of music and movement. We are interested in what can be said without words, in group dynamics and exploring the knots and patterns that people get themselves into and out of.
Q How important is it that we celebrate
storytelling in new and exciting forms, and encourage adventurous audiences?
A Stories can be told in many ways, be
it through words, through movement, through music... What is important is that the stories are compelling and that they get people thinking, questioning and going on a journey with us. We’ve always believed that you don’t need to rely on words to communicate powerfully - audiences are interested in new experiences and performance that pushes boundaries.
Q What has been your wildest performance moment to date?
A Perhaps the most high-adrenalin
moment was with Red Ladies, which sees 18 identically dressed women take over entire cities. When they arrived at Trafalgar Square, we arranged for a helicopter to fly past in sync with a live brass band and then set off the fountains in the square, as the helicopter disappeared. ‘Find out more about Clod Ensemble at www.clodensemble.com.

British music legend Leo Sayer will be touring the UK in celebration of his 70 birthday year. Leo and his band are bringing their boundless energy, exuberance and a hit packed show to New Theatre Royal. Known the world over for his army of hits including Thunder In My Heart, One Man Band, The Show Must Go On, When I Need You and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing.
Dubbed ‘the greatest year in Jazz’, there was definitely something in the air in 1959. It saw the release of some of the most influential jazz albums of all time – recordings that changed the face of jazz forever. It also saw the founding of Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club – the cornerstone of the UK Jazz Scene. Now the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars will take you on a guided tour of this unique year in the history of Jazz in this celebration of the music of 1959. A TRIBUTE TO QUEEN One of the UKs premier Queen Tribute bands, Majesty play all the hits from the 70s and 80s. Majesty started when Actor Seth Daniels graduated from Drama School and decided to create his own band. At only 22 years old he was the youngest Freddie Mercury on the circuit and hit the ground running securing several contracts to perform at festivals in Luxemburg and Germany. Seth also wanted to portray Freddie’s younger days so his first half of the show was a dedication to the 1975 Hammersmith Apollo show, before donning the yellow jacket for some of Queen’s Greatest Hits.
