We’re delighted to bring The Tempest to Gatcome Park in Hilsea in June, making theatre more accessible in the north of the city, and we’re pleased to establish our first Easter musical production – Alice in Wonderland. Look out for the range of regular classes available in our Minghella Studio. As well as bringing a wide range of theatre, music, comedy, dance and family entertainment to Portsmouth, we’re just as keen to make it accessible. TOM GILL

OUR CARNAL HEARTS

GROWING PAINS

WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY RACHEL MARS

“If you plant a seed, and treat it like the dirt it’s surrounded by, it’ll grow ugly, like me…”

A welcome! To you and to me and our spiky, sticky, shameful bits!

Carrying the weight of the world in his JD Sports bag, a working-class lad trades his bag-head mates for a one-way ticket out of Salford.

With a raucous chorus of original music, award-winning theatre maker Rachel Mars and four belting female singers bring you a gleeful, dark show about the hidden workings of envy.

Combining quick-witted spoken word with original songs, Gill’s explosive drama takes us on a poetic journey against the backdrop of Ladbrokes, broke lads and sh*t dads.

Part symphony, part exorcism, Our Carnal Hearts is a thrilling and murky celebration of desire, competition and all the times we screw each other over. Performed with a surroundsound choral score by Louise Mothersole, Our Carnal Hearts comes to Portsmouth after sell-out shows across the UK and US.

But shortly after her arrival, she realises that they are not alone. There are others – the ghosts of Bly’s troubled past. In this refreshingly honest and irreverent physical theatre comedy by critically acclaimed Rhum and Clay and darkly comic theatre writer and director Kit Redstone, they explore the epic path that we all have to take when forging an identity. “Multi-layered and gripping” Lyn Gardner THURSDAY 10 MAY · 8PM

RICH HALL’S HOEDOWN There has never been a better time to be an American comedian in the UK. Rich Hall’s precision dismantling of the tenuous relationship between two countries is as freewheeling and deadly accurate as ever. The Hoedown begins as a withering dissection of Trump’s America, but ends up being a celebration of Americana. There’s stand-up, improvised ballads, cracking good musicianship, and ultimately a hilarious, foot-stomping, sh*tkicking good time to be had by all. Even if you don’t own a hoe. If you’ve only ever seen Hall on TV, you’ve short-changed yourself. “Blissfully Funny” The Guardian FRIDAY 11 MAY · 8PM

DOLLYWOULD

WE ARE IAN

BY SH!T THEATRE

Oh look, it’s 2016 Fringe First Award winners Sh!t Theatre again.

It’s 1989. Manchester. A frenzy of drugs, beats and bucket hats.

What is it this time? Is it unemployment? Is there a crisis? Did the government do something wrong again? No, it’s a show about Dolly Parton. We f*cking love her. Following the award-winning Letters to Windsor House, Sh!t Theatre return with their bold new show about country legend Dolly Parton, cloning, branding, immortality and death. DollyWould enjoyed a 100% sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and comes to Portsmouth off the back of a four-week off-West End London run.

Illegal raves and acid parties. Jumping up and down in a field and throwing two fingers to Thatcher… Remember it? Cus we don’t. We weren’t even born. But Ian was.

TILTED WIG PRODUCTIONS AND MALVERN THEATRES PRESENT

GREAT EXPECTATIONS WRITTEN BY CHARLES DICKENS ADAPTED BY KEN BENTLEY DIRECTED BY SOPHIE BOYCE COUZENS AND DESIGNED BY JAMES TURNER

The producers who brought us Travels with my Aunt in 2015 are back with Dickens’ timeless classic in a powerful new stage adaptation. Following a terrifying encounter with an escaped convict, young Pip is given an unexpected chance to better himself by visiting the reclusive and mysterious Miss Havisham. In the decaying grandeur of her house, Pip falls in love with Estella and, helped by an anonymous benefactor, he moves to the bustling city to pursue his dream of winning Estella’s heart and of becoming part of the educated elite. Peopled by some of Dickens’ most colourful and memorable characters and painted in rich, vivid colours across a vast landscape of people and locations, this stunning new version promises a powerful and theatrical telling of Dickens’ universally loved masterpiece. Olivier Award-winning actress Nichola McAuliffe leads the cast as the iconic Miss Havisham. Nichola is best known for her role in the long running TV series, Surgical Spirit, the films Tomorrow Never Dies and Chéri and her many stage appearances including Kiss Me Kate for the RSC, The Night of the Iguana in the West End & Alan Bennett’s The Lady in the Van.

THE LORD CHAMBERLAIN’S MEN PRESENT

THE TEMPEST BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Bring a chair or a rug and a picnic and spend a glorious summer’s evening of outdoor theatre in Gatcombe Gardens, Copnor Road, just two miles north of Portsmouth city centre. The Lord Chamberlain’s Men, the UK’s premier all male theatre company, invite you to join them this summer for The Tempest, Shakespeare’s spellbinding masterpiece. 12 years earlier, Prospero, Duke of Milan, exiled by his brother, washes up on a distant island with his daughter, Miranda. A place where his magical powers reign supreme and the only inhabitants of the island, the sprite Ariel and brutish Caliban, answer his every command. Now his enemies, his brother Antonio, who unseated him as Duke, and Alonso, King of Naples, are blown off course whilst sailing home, as Prospero raises a tempestuous storm to shipwreck them. Scattered across the island, the stranded passengers are tested and tormented while drawn towards their fate. After plotting his revenge for years, will Prospero finally exact it? 34

COLLATE, INNOVATE & CREATE Creating art that responds to and/or is enhanced by the current industry environment is exciting, so it goes without saying that we are thrilled about having Olivier Award winning Wayne McGregor offering a week residency in February! As part of his residency, he will be offering YOU the chance to work with him through workshops and seminars. Participants will be able to work to create a performance with the company, inspired by Wayne’s choreographic practice. The sessions will demonstrate how the choreographer communicates ideas to an audience, building phrases of dance, live and unscripted. This opportunity coincides with his company performing Atomos on our main stage. Dance lovers will also be pleased to see that Motionhouse are back with their new piece Charge, which uses digital projections to create a world on stage where dancers and images interact seamlessly, bringing technology to the forefront of performance. Theatre has a history of evolving and adapting with technology: using light and recorded sound to create worlds on stage and keeping track with the invention of photography and film to enhance storytelling. Our new artistic vision, The Creative Technology Gateway, embraces new technologies, offering artists and communities opportunities to experiment with virtual reality and motion capture in live performance. The exploration of new technologies promises almost limitless ways to give artists new tools to move with the times and change the way audiences consume stories. We are looking forward to watching how these new mediums will change the way we experience live performance. The recent expansion of our associate artists network, Creative Lab, has enabled us to secure technology specialists to help inform our vision. Our creative team have been busy devising community engagement projects that will offer participants engagement within The Creative Technology Gateway, inspiring current and future generations of artists and culture lovers. Watch this space for further announcements. 2018 will be an exciting year for the New Theatre Royal and we want you to be part of this thrilling time.
