WELCOME Welcome to our Summer to Winter 2018 Season, bringing you an eclectic programme of work, to stimulate, evoke and entertain. Portsmouth is a thrilling place to live and visit, with an incredible range of activities and events to get involved with. Our diverse programme of work at the New Theatre Royal makes a significant contribution to the quality of life for those who call Portsmouth and Hampshire home. There really isn’t anything like live theatre; the communal experience of participating in an audience is a very special thing. We’re indebted to Arts Council England and Portsmouth City Council for their continued support, as we bring theatre to you in all its forms, to enrich our lives and understanding of the world around us. We want to offer more choice in pricing, to make theatre more accessible. Look out for our Pay What You Can events, £10 tickets for under 25s, and Early Bird discounts. We’re mindful that, for some, getting to venues can be difficult. So we’re launching a free family musical podcast this Autumn - The Lost Dragon - to enable even more people to enjoy our work. We’re also throwing open our doors for Fun Palaces (see page 13), inviting our community to celebrate creativity and fashion, all for free. We like to be playful with space, using our StageHouse format to provide an intimate and flexible environment, and taking shows to other locations such as Canvas Coffee in Portsmouth and Southsea Station. We use our venue spaces to develop new work, working with companies from around the UK and abroad, and delivering participatory work with our local communities. I’m delighted to announce that our biggest production to date will be opening at the New Theatre Royal this December. Peter Pan is a thrilling new show on a massive scale, featuring a stunning cast and a beautiful array of sets, costumes and effects. J.M. Barrie’s much-loved book has been transformed into a wonderful live production - the perfect show for adults and children alike this Christmas. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

THE RUSSIAN STATE OPERA PRESENTS
CARMEN MUSIC BY GEORGES BIZET
Featuring an impressive cast and accompanied by a live Orchestra numbering over 30 musicians. Love, treachery, passion and betrayal, Carmen has it all. The infatuated Don José abandons his childhood sweetheart and neglects his military duties, only to lose the fickle Carmen to the glamorous toreador Escamillo. Feel the thrill of fiery passion, jealousy and violence of 19th century Seville in Bizet’s most popular opera Carmen. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for the brilliance of its melodies, enthralling atmosphere and orchestration, as well as for the skill with which Bizet musically represented the emotions and suffering of his characters. The Toreador Song is among the best known of all operatic arias. The rich and colourful vigour of the gypsies’ scenes will have you on the edge of your seat, the vibrancy, enthusiasm and intensity of the performances will reverberate long after the final curtain has fallen. JEREMY HARDY LIVE 2018
GREATEST HITS TOUR 2018 This world class band are a phenomenon that has transcended the tag of ‘tribute’.
Jeremy Hardy is in his 4th decade as a standup this year.
They have become a brand name in their own right who are not only revered by their peers and respected by the music industry, but dearly loved by their massive and expanding fan base.
That’s a dramatic way of saying he started 34 years ago and, without a lottery win, probably has another 34 years to go.
The ability of Talon to evolve and go from strength to strength, year on year continues and the ‘Greatest Hits Tour 2018’ will once again feature the Eagles timeless back catalogue including Hotel California, Take It Easy, One Of These Nights, Take It To The Limit, Desperado, Lyin’ Eyes, Life In The Fast Lane and many more.
Recently Jeremy’s brand-new series Jeremy Hardy Feels It was broadcast on Radio 4, although he is also known for The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Indeed, Alan Bennett recently said he likes him “but he’s only on the radio”. However, Jeremy isn’t only on the radio, he is often on television, and he will be appearing live in Portsmouth!
