NO GLASS CEILINGS We talk to David Glass about his work across 70 countries and bringing Bleak House to life for a new generation.
Q Where did the idea of reimagining Bleak House come from?
A I read Bleak House at A level and also
saw Mike Alfred’s Shared Experience version. For me it is the most visually and physically exciting of Dickens books but I also feel with the main protagonist being a woman, Esther Summerson, it is a truly modern story of a young woman trysting to find identity and her struggle for power in a male dominated world. Also the destructive power of the law makes it very relevant at the moment, but finally it is a brilliant story.
Q How has working across the globe enhanced your own theatre practice?
A I see theatre as both universal and
specific and as we are going through extraordinary changes all across the world, the fundamental themes of love, death and greed are again expressing themselves in vivid and powerful stories. I love all kinds of theatre and each story has its way of being told. Working across different cultures reveals many ways of expressing these stories.
Q What next for the Ensemble? A The Ensemble has just finished
Tempest in Malaysia which was a huge hit, meanwhile I am directing the first iteration of Fight Club at East 15. Next year is our 30th anniversary with a National tour of Gormenghast one of the Ensemble’s most successful shows. Find out more at davidglassensemble.org

DAVID GLASS ENSEMBLE
BLEAK HOUSE ADAPTED FROM CHARLES DICKENS’ NOVEL BY DAVID GLASS Themes of Love, Power, Poverty and Choice ring loudly in a time of social upheaval. The novel by Portsmouth’s own Charles Dickens is brought to life in a powerfully physical and gothic retelling. Following Esther Summerson’s search for family and identity, she is set against a brutal legal system hell bent on destroying those beneath it. Pickpockets, prostitutes, drunks and con artists immerse us into a thrilling world- the dark and dangerous life of a Victorian city. “A brilliant and bold adaptation of Dickens’ finest work” Mark Ravenhill, Writer on Bleak House

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED, RIGHT? Meet Improbable and Bunny artists Lisa Hammond and Rachael Spence, as they head to Portsmouth with a very personal story.
Q How did Still No Idea come about? A We really wanted to make a show
of our own after making lots of other shows with other theatre companies. But nobody had ever really asked us for our ideas before, so, we decided to ask the public for their help. We thought that their ideas would be a starting point, but it became clear very quickly that it was what they weren’t saying that was more interesting to us and so we decided to make the show out of that!
Q Why do you think the show has become essential viewing?
A We think that it’s a light and funny
take on some pretty tough issues. It’s an entertaining and brisk jaunt through some really interesting viewpoints that you might not have thought of otherwise, so that’s quite essential!
Q What next for you both? A Our next show is all about housing
and how living in the city is becoming really hard for one of us. How can we turn the housing crisis around in one foul theatrical swoop? We reckon some jokes, a song and lots of help from our neighbours should do it….. Find out more at bunnyproductions.co.uk

Powerful, funny, celebratory, authentic. One of the UK’s leading refugee theatre companies, starring four young men who’ve made the dangerous journey to the UK on their own, as children. Having told their ‘stories’ repeatedly to the Home Office as part of seeking asylum, they are now reclaiming them. From the precinct of a pizza shop we embark on a journey across time and continents to explore how they got here, where they’re going and what they’ve learnt along the way. “It will change your perception. for a refugee charity as a housing manager running a supported house for Unaccompanied Minors. One of the young men who lived there asked for her help in telling his story. Kate had done an applied theatre degree so drama was the obvious choice, and weekly sessions in the front room turned into a full-scale play.
Q Where did the idea for Pizza Shop Heroes come from?
A We took the idea of ‘story’ and
what this means to refugees and asylum-seekers who are judged on it from the moment they arrive in the UK. Our actors say ‘we’re going to tell our stories how we want to’, and this is what we do. Moving away from negative representations to drive their own narrative.
Q What’s next? A We’re in the great position of
having core funding this year to help us grow. As well as touring Pizza Shop Heroes and starting work on Play 4, we’re planning a new youth theatre for unaccompanied minors in London. Find out more at phosphorostheatre.com

great intimate theatrical experiences that, as an audience member, you can just sink into. The characters are so beautifully drawn, the text so funny and so real, the setting so believable. It is hilarious at moments, and at others, deeply moving. I chose it now because it seems to me to be a play that asks: “can you really love someone if you fundamentally disagree with them”? It seems, in our divided age, like an incredibly crucial question.
Q Why do you think David Hare
has become one of the UK’s most successful writers?
A David Hare’s forte is the fusion of
ideas and politics with real, human dramas. He creates works that are deeply and genuinely entertaining – they really deliver a good night out – but still have something to say about the world we live in. Skylight is David Hare’s most produced work, not just because of its size and intimate scale, but because it manages to bring a real human tenderness and delicacy to the stage, whilst almost imperceptibly exploring huge and challenging ideas about how we live and engage with the world. Supper bubbles on the stove, a cheap electric heater tries to dispel the cold of a London winter’s night and flickers of their former passion rekindle. As they fall into a battle of opposing politics and mutual desire, is the gap between them too great to be bridged? THE SOUND OF MOVEMENT We talk to Tom Dale about his latest show, and why creating it has been such a blast.
Q Where did the idea for Step Sonic come from and what plans do you have for it?
A I’m a big music head, I love all
types but it was electronic music that pushed me into the field of dance, art and creating unusual performance experiences for audiences. New technologies mean that music creation doesn’t need to happen in an expensive studio any more. You don’t need traditional instruments either, you can gather samples from anywhere, round the house, the garage, the street or the beach or you can create your own instruments to gather unique sounds to compose with. Dancers have an incredible amount of hidden musical potential and I want to draw on this. By creating bespoke amplified spaces and instruments for the dancers to move inside we can both choreograph and compose instantly with live electronic processing to produce exciting sound, music and dance as one.
Q What excites you about bringing the work to Portsmouth?
A I love coming to Portsmouth, I’ve
been coming here over the last 20 years teaching and performing and my wife is from Portsmouth too so I know it well. We love to have a night at The One Eyed Dog, my favourite pub in Southsea, great people, music and a decent beer too! Find out more at www.tomdale.org.uk

SWAN LAKE AND DON QUIXOTE After sell-out performances last year, the Russian State Ballet and Opera House is back with two spellbinding, lavish, full-production touring ballets.
SWAN LAKE
DON QUIXOTE
One hundred and thirty-five years ago audiences heard Swan Lake by the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for the very first time. From that moment on, the world of ballet would never be the same.
Don Quixote delights in stories of brave knights, fabulous giants and other fantastical creatures. But most of all, he dreams of his beloved Dulcinea, a woman that he believes to be so lovely and noble that she must be divine.
Swan Lake captures, like no other ballet, the full range of human emotions. A compelling legend of a tragic romance in which a princess, Odette, is turned into a swan by an evil curse. Will Prince Siegfried’s love prove strong enough to break the evil spell that she is under?
As he approaches the windmills, he can no longer see the moon and thinks that evil magicians have hidden his beloved mistress. So, spear in hand, he tilts at the sails of the windmill, which he mistakes for a giant!
From the opulent splendour of the palace ballroom to the moonlit lake where majestic swans glide in perfect formation, this compelling tale of tragic romance has it all.
Don Quixote has all the elements of the great classical ballets: emotion, drama, and unforgettable characters. Love, duels and spectacular choreography are mixed with Spanish passion in this most beautiful and moving ballet.

PUTTING THE FIELDWORK IN We talked to Neil Oliver, archaeologist, historian, author and presenter about his new book and live show.
Q When did you realise that bringing stories to life is as important as the history itself?
A I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t excited about history and it was a long time before it occurred to me that other people might not feel the same. We are descendants of the past - somehow our ancestors managed to survive it all, making the people who eventually made us. I find it thrilling to think I’m connected to people who saw the end of the last Ice Age, the coming of farming, the arrival of Romans - all of it.
NEIL OLIVER THE STORY OF THE BRITISH ISLES IN 100 PLACES
Q Do you pinch yourself sometimes,
that you’re able to bring history to life in such enjoyable ways?
A I am well aware that I’ve landed a
pretty damned good job - but then again I had to sort of invent my job, because it didn’t exactly exist before. I have to keep moving - a bit of TV here, write a book there, do some public speaking, and so on. That said, for the past 20 years I have been transported to wonderful places and meeting fascinating people along the way.
Q If you could explore any civilization
in the world, where would you go next?
A I have done more than my share of
travel, and have seen a lot of places, but I’ve yet to visit South America. Tierra del Fuego, and the edge of the world. I’m also drawn to the farthest north and south.
Neil was born to love Great Britain. During his 20 years travelling to every corner, and whilst filming BBC2’s ‘Coast’, he’s fallen in love all over again. From north to south, east to west it cradles astonishing beauty. The human story here is a million years old, and counting. The tolerant, easy-going peace we enjoy has been hard won and the places Neil’s seen have given him a unique view and understanding of British history. Hear in his amusing and entertaining way what it all means to him, and why we need to cherish and celebrate our wonderful countries. Q What can the people of Portsmouth expect from Knees Up?
A Carry on Portsmouth at the Pompey Palladium - thats a thing right?!
We rely on grants and donations, as well as ticket income to secure our social outreach and development work, as well as the restoration of our Grade II listed theatre. Donations, sponsorship and legacies all play a vital part in our success. The show sits between Cilla Black and Kenneth Williams, offering a right old salute to ITV classics and belly laugh britishness, but 3,2,1 and we’re live on air! Please DO Swear! Featuring a right old gaggle of Portsmouth entertainers who just wanna show off and have a good time. As we say, its entertainment so light you can spread it on your toast.
Q Where did the idea come from? A Years ago, I have a conversation with
my mum who had a right squin because I was talking about ‘performance art’ she turned around and said ‘why can’t you make a show for me? Why can’t you just be entertaining!’ and thus Knees Up was born.
Q What do you love about the Blue Lagoon?
A ’Blue Lagoon’ sounds like a Las Vegas show full of martinis, neon lights and crushed velvet curtains with a revolving stage so I am living the fantasy! But really it’s an iconic venue steeped in Pompey history so it just felt like the perfect space, plus there’s a bar.... Did you know a Hollywood Movie was filmed there once?
