Welcome A very warm welcome, to our exciting and diverse programme of events for Spring 2017. In February, we host the World Premiere production of “Silver Lining” a hilarious new comedy by writer, actor, presenter, political activist and our Theatre Patron Sandi Toksvig. Telling the tale of 5 extraordinary women, who come together one treacherous night to recreate The Great Escape – senior citizen style! (pages 7 & 8). Having enjoyed sensational reviews and huge success across the country, Bill Kenwright’s production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webbers musical spectacular “Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat” graces the New Theatre Royal stage, with X Factor winner Joe McElderry donning the converted coat (pages 11 & 12). As if that wasn’t enough, there’s another smash hit for Spring! “The Woman in Black” embarks on a major UK Tour and is coming to Portsmouth! And for an extra spooky experience, we are also offering after show Ghost Walks with Professor Frederick! (pages 19 & 20). If you enjoy outstanding dance, we have a treat for you in March, I recommend “Scattered” a spellbinding performance by the highly acclaimed Motionhouse (pages 15 & 16). While for ballet lovers, the Vienna Festival Ballet is back by popular demand, with a chance to see their breath-taking classical ballet “Swan Lake” in April. Don’t forget to catch up with some of our Creative Lab Associates, who continue to wow us with their creative genius or get involved with our Creative Learning programme, as we continue to provide a programme of music for all tastes and some truly fantastic comedy too. The team look forward to welcoming you to New Theatre Royal this Spring!

Much of her work focuses on the role of the audience in relation to their environment and to each other. Inspired by One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Macondo is a unique show that combines instruction based theatre, binaural sound and video. TUESDAY 21 MARCH 7.30pm
Frederic reaches his 21st birthday and tries to release himself from the life of piracy to which he was mistakenly apprenticed as a boy. Having met the girl of his dreams however, a terrible revelation is made which throws his life into confusion. Chaos ensues in the following battle between the pirates and the police in one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comedies. Music by Sir Arthur Sullivan Libretto by W. S. Gilbert The full University Orchestra plays in the pit.
Set in the glamorously seductive world of 1940’s Hollywood, this part film-noir detective story and part fish-out-water romantic comedy, it’s loaded with great songs and a stunning jazz score played by a professional live band. Enter the world of film studios and fatal attractions as a young novelist has to make endless compromises in the screenplay that he’s writing. It’s a musical tale of decadence, deceit and homicide that sparks with wicked humour and femmes fatales!
