Welcome and Happy Birthday NTR! This year New Theatre Royal celebrates its 160th birthday! Our beautiful Victorian theatre has lived through two wars, four royals and straddled two centuries, welcomed greats, suffered losses and had some amazing adventures including the major fire in 1972. Then in the Autumn 2015 we re-emerged with a brand new, a refreshed auditorium, a fabulous new Minghella Studio space and transformed bar and café areas. So please join us as we celebrate our 160th year in Portsmouth with an eclectic mix of brilliant shows, comedy, alternative installations, educational activities and filling our spaces. In March we mark the anniversary with NTR 160, a celebratory night premiering a NTR commissioned fanfare by Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies; the Royal Marine drummers and local singers and musicians of all ages. This season we enjoy Shakespeare’s Globe indoors in the comfort of our lovely theatre, find out whodunit in The Mousetrap starring Louise Jameson and find the brilliant Pilot Theatre performing E M Forster’s, The Machine Stops. Olivier award winning English Touring Opera bring early music classics: Monteverdi’s Ulysses and Handel’s Xerxes; the Chinese State Circus perform on our stage and there is a chance to see the all singing all plucking Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain. Our comedy line-up is epic with Rob Beckett, Al Murray, Henning Wehn and local talents Max Olesker (and his comedy partner Ivan) and Suzy Ruffell. All this and more, and, it’s hard to believe, but we are also about to launch our all singing all dancing Christmas show Santa Claus the Musical. If you fancy a show or just popping in for lunch, or listening to some new play scripts, there’s always be a warm welcome at NTR.
Caroline Sharman Artistic Director & CEO On behalf of all of us at New Theatre Royal

Nationally acclaimed aod are back with their unique take on Greek drama with the no holds barred comedy, Lysistrata. Follow our heroine, Lysistrata, and the women of Greece in their (not always heartfelt!) battle to deny their men sex in order to stop a bloody war. As tensions mount, frustrations erupt, and phalluses reach bursting point. See who wins and if peace is restored in this high octane, absurdist version of Aristophanes’ masterpiece. Contains strong language and comic scenes of an adult nature.
Shakespeare’s Macbeth, as told by Banquo. Goat and Monkey cut the text of one of Shakespeare’s most notorious works with the words of ex-servicemen, in this unique take on the last hours of Banquo’s life. In complete darkness, The Devil Speaks True uses wireless headphones and immersive sound design to plunge audiences into a chilling exploration of the psychological effects of war.

“Engrossing and entertaining, wellcrafted and brilliant” - NEW YORK POST “A beautiful and touching play” SUNDAY EXPRESS “Endlessly fascinating” DAILY MAIL
Shadowlands is the stunning drama written by William Nicholson that poses classic questions about religion, pain and love, through childhood innocence and the wonder of late-flowering love. Starring Stephen Boxer (Humans, The Iron Lady, Doctors) as C.S. Lewis and Tony Slattery (Whose Line is it Anyway?), this West End and Broadway hit is the love story of C.S. Lewis - author of The Chronicles of Narnia - and American poet Joy Davidman. Lewis is comfortable in his life at Oxford University, smug in his convictions about God and His plan for the world until Joy and her young son enter his life and the bewildered theoretician of love in the abstract finally confronts its direct presence. Following on from its original incarnation as a TV drama, then subsequent stage adaptation and finally a film starring Anthony Hopkins, the play has gone on to win multiple awards as well as the film adaptation picking up multiple BAFTA and US awards. CHINESE STATE CIRCUS MAIN HOUSE
MONDAY 14 TUESDAY 15 NOVEMBER 7.30pm Chinese State Circus is more than just a show. It aims to embody the rich tapestry of Chinese art, history and culture which can be dated back over 2000 years. Acrobatics is a common form of art within the Chinese culture, which is honed and perfected by the artists’ lifelong dedication. Chinese State Circus itself spans 25 years, after Phillip Gandey first witnessed some Oriental acrobats performing at the Monte Carlo Circus Festival. Astounded at the quality and sheer diversity of the acrobatic troupes, he embarked on transporting the artistes, plus directors, interpreters and props half-way around the world – the rest, as they say, is history!
