FROM THE PUBLISHER
his is the time of year I believe creating holiday traditions with your family and friends counts the most. Sharing time with those special loved ones makes heartwarming memories while igniting your Christmas spirit. So I’m going to keep it simple and share some of my fun-filled ideas that will hopefully make your heart grow three sizes larger (stole that line from The Grinch). Remember, Christmas is the most colorful and vibrant holiday with all the brilliant decorations and displays. One of my favorites is to drive to neighborhoods throughout New York as we sing holiday tunes (car fully packed with family like in Christmas Vacation). We’re always amazed to see the beautiful houses looking more like Santa’s North Pole with multi-colored lights, snowmen, reindeer, and candy canes adorning front homes and lawns. This year we’re adding something new to the list. Luminocity Festival, which is a holiday light festival and an immersive art experience that takes place on Randall’s Island from November 23rd to January 5th. It’s going to light up the whole East River in the evenings.

We always take the time to go do some must-see holiday shows around town. Like an evening at Radio City to see the Christmas Spectacular with the Radio City Rockettes or even take a quick ride to the New York Botanical Garden to see the eye-popping Holiday Train Show. This year, we’re adding something new to our todo list to catch a performance of the new Cirque du Soleil’s Twas the Night Before at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. Get your tickets quick because it’s a limited engagement from December 12th to 29th. Some of my other favorites that take very little planning could be doing a Christmas Classic Movie Night with family and friends. It’s much more comfortable and less expensive than running out to the movie theater. Some sure bets are Grinch (Jim Carrey version of course), A Christmas Story, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Carol, or even if I dare say Elf (sorry, I’m not a Will Ferrell fan). Naturally, it’s not Christmas until there’s a hint of freshly-cut spruce in your home. So take the time and effort to go out and pick up a fresh Christmas tree. Go for the full experience and chop one down at a tree farm. Afterward, indulge in some welldeserved hot chocolate and freshly baked sugar cookies. There’s just a couple of other simple traditions I will leave you with. Go ice skating for a couple of hours over at Bryant Park’s Winter Village—it’s beautiful, fun, and even free if you have your skates. Lastly, if you’re sitting around with friends sharing some holiday memories, get some icing, candies, and other decorations to build a gingerbread house. The sky’s the limit, so let your creativity fly to make your own winter wonderland. Just a reminder, make sure to take a moment to reflect on all the blessings of 2019. I wish everyone a very happy and healthy holiday season. I look forward to hearing from you with comments, suggestions, and what you would like to see on the pages of New York Lifestyles and Pet Lifestyles magazines next year. P.S. Even with all the social media going on, don’t take the easy way out. Take the time to reconnect with everyone and surprise them by mailing a real greeting card.
Merry Christmas!

HEY, DUDE
12 EASY WAYS TO ESCAPE CITY LIFE By AP Connolly
t was a good idea back in the 1880s and it’s an even better one today. Dude ranches provide a genuine Western experience to “dudes” of all stripes who have at least one thing in common: a yearning to briefly escape from city life into the saddle, on a real ranch out West in a yonderscape of mountains and meadows, mesas and canyons, rolling prairies, and boundless space that can resuscitate the most knotted New Yorker. Dude, of course, is slang for “city slicker.” The dude ranches’ collective history dates back to when families who moved out West subsequently invited friends to visit their hundreds of thousands of acres of land. Once the word spread, thanks to the expansion of the railroad, ranch owners realized they’d better start charging for room and board. According to the Dude Ranchers’ Association (DRA), it’s one of the last vacations out there where you truly get to relax and unplug. By definition, a dude ranch is a family-friendly destination offering horseback riding. DRA member dude ranches though, are this and much more! In order for ranches to be members of the DRA, they have to go through a rigorous membership application process and have to meet the industry’s highest standards. Their emphasis has been squarely on horses. However, the newest trend is ranch resorts, where getting away no longer means roughing it. Instead, the focus may also include pure relaxation, whether it’s fly-fishing, spa treatments or riding. Here are some of the Dude Ranchers’ Association member ranches; all are perfect for family-friendly getaways or travelers of any kind. For more options and information on the DRA and its’ members, visit them at duderanch.org.

At one time or another, everyone has dreamed of being a cowboy. Images of loping through mountain meadows studded by wildflowers, the smell and taste of coffee around the fire with friends old and new, and the sharing of a bountiful spread with family have danced through the imagination. Those images and dreams seem to be from a time long ago since replaced by the roar of traffic and the hustle and bustle of modern life. Longings for a past that few believe still exist at Cherokee Park Ranch. “Voted America’s #1 Dude Ranch” by USA Today, Cherokee Park Ranch has been welcoming guests since 1886. Escape, unwind, and reconnect on a horseback riding vacation in one of the most beautiful places in the world! Geronimo Trail Guest Ranch is unique because of its small size (4 rooms!), personal attention, quality horseback riding focus, stunning scenery, incredible history, and delicious meals. Best of all, they can customize your experience! Located in the 3.3 million-acre Gila National Forest in the mountains of southwest New Mexico, it will become natural to explore incredible deep canyons with crystal clear spring-fed streams, Ponderosa forests, open meadows, and a mountain overlook. Geronimo Trail Ranch prides itself on welltrained and well-cared for horses. Once you arrive, it’s like a step back in time to experience the thousand-year-old pit houses and cliff dwellings of the Mimbres people who were in this area from 200-1150AD. Search for pottery sherds and artifacts and view pictographs painted on the rock walls by these early people! Yes, this is also the birthplace of Geronimo and the homeland of the Chiricahua Apaches.
Three delicious meals a day are prepared for you by a chef who will mark his 4th year in 2020. Don’t miss popular dishes, including pork tenderloin, ribeye steaks, pecancrusted chicken, barbecue ribs, homemade mac & cheese, grilled fish, tacos, and other New Mexican Cuisine, fresh vegetables and salads, homemade bread, cheesy scrambled eggs, blueberry pancakes and eggs benedict. There is also plenty of fresh fruit and delicious desserts! Of course, the staff can satisfy all dietary needs. Soak in the day’s experiences around a campfire with s’mores, sing-a-longs, and fantastic stargazing! Other evening activities guests enjoy are watching a western movie, playing games, line dancing, or just kicking back and immersing yourself in the extraordinary peacefulness of the area.
The spring and fall are perfect for an adult getaway. Spring Break and the summer months bring fun for all ages and counselors are on duty from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and join the children again in the evening with planned activities for ages 4-11. They enjoy arts and crafts, hikes, and visits to the animal farm. Other ranch activities include hiking, fishing (trout-stocked pond), swimming pool, and planned evening activities. The large recreation room is a perfect gathering place with a pool table, shuffleboard, ping pong, and games. It is characterized as “a fun filled, down home kind of vacation complete with tradition, history and diversions for both young and old.” Make your way out West to experience Rankin Ranch which opens March 25th to September 25th and is located in the heart of California. It’s only 2.5 hours from Los Angeles and has been a working cattle ranch since the days of the Civil War. The Rankin family still raises White Face Hereford cattle just as their ancestors did 150 years ago. Guests travel from across the United States and around the world to visit this guest ranch, many making it an annual tradition. They enjoy the fact that it is a real working ranch, and are fascinated with its century-old history. Many guests enjoy the interactions with the generational Rankin family members as they all live on the ranch. Western hospitality is part of the package! Naturally, the favorite activity has always been horseback riding. There are both adult and children rides (riding starts at age six), which explore the meadows, Walker’s Basin Creek, and mountain ridges overlooking the beautiful valley. Ranch wranglers will select the perfect horse for you and guide you through beautiful trails across the ranch.

disconnecting them from their devices. Kids-only cookouts, wholesome games and roasting s’mores on the fire are just a few of the fun activities during their stay. Even more profound are the lasting effects that families share about the Red Rock experience. There is a unique connection among family members.
It’s time to connect with nature. The best way is to book a stay at Red Rock Ranch on the eastern slope of Jackson Hole. For four decades, nearly 65 percent of guests have returned every year. There’s a good reason. One of the families that call Red Rock Ranch their destination of choice (since 1982) reunited all three generations this last year. “We used to encourage our kids to join us at Red Rock. Now our grandchildren are the ones planning the trips every year. The hospitality that the MacKenzie/ Stimmel families created is simply unmatched. There’s nothing quite like Jackson Hole, and we think the best way to experience it is with our friends at Red Rock Ranch.” Red Rock Ranch is known far and wide for its top-rated children’s program with its hands-on learning experience for ages 6 and up. Popular activities including trail-riding, gymkhana, cattle work, and horse ‘vaulting’ help children connect with nature and each other while 18 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
There are also plenty of activities for the rest of the family. Firstrate ranch horses will guide you through the Bridger-Teton National Forest, effortlessly adapting to your riding abilities. The obstacle course, team sorting, and a range of guided trail rides are a must for any horse enthusiasts. Avid fly-fishermen appreciate the exclusive access to 2.5 miles of Crytsal Creek or stocked ponds. Red Rock Ranch offers ten cabins, all recently remodeled and filled with comfortable furnishings. There’s also a saloon for the evening adult gatherings. Whether your stay is short or extended, one thing is certain. It’s impossible to leave Red Rock Ranch unchanged. 307-733-6288 www.TheRedRockRanch.com
The team of professionals at the ranch are passionate and care about your vacation and well-being. They are committed and strive to offer the highest standards of culinary experience, quality lodging, attentive staff, and responsive horses. The European/American owners and staff are multi-cultural and view diversity as an asset. They welcome a growing number of international riders and travelers—many of whom return year after year. As they say, “we are all about horsemanship, riding and horses! Go for it and blaze new trails”. 307-765-2080 www.thehideout.com
The Hideout Lodge and Guest Ranch is an all-inclusive, upscale, international riding, horsemanship and authentic working cattle guest ranch with boutique-style hospitality. It won’t take long for you to reconnect with nature, family, friends, and serenity during a relaxing visit to the ranch. Take a ride through the unspoiled desert, rugged mountains, and cactus that have stood the test of time. The ranch is a unique working cattle ranch with spectacular views. It features 43 spacious rooms, a hacienda, and can accommodate meetings and conferences.
Choose from a wide selection of exciting outdoor adventures and state-of-the-art facilities for your recreation and relaxing at White Stallion Ranch. Eatons’ Ranch was founded in 1879 by Howard Eaton and located in Medora, North Dakota. Howard first went to North Dakota on a hunting trip and decided to settle along the Missouri River. Soon after, Howard was joined by his brothers, Willis and Alden. Originally from Pittsburg, the Eaton brothers had many friends visit them from the East to hunt and share in the ranch work. The fascination with the West became evident as these visits went from weeks to months. Always generous and hospitable, the Eaton’s invited their friends to live the life of a cowboy. In 1904, the Eaton Brothers decided to move to its current location in Wolf, Wyoming.

CURAÇAO
The Handelskade in downtown Willemstad
THE CARIBBEAN’S MOST COLORFUL ISLAND By Gerrie Summers
he lovely and vibrant Dutch Caribbean island of Curaçao is conveniently positioned in the southern Caribbean, outside of the hurricane belt, with an average year-round temperature in the mid-80s, often with a soothing breeze from trade winds. It is the third and largest of the ABC Islands (which includes sister islands Aruba and Bonaire.) The capital city Willemstad, with its picturesque buildings and most notably the iconic, oft-photographed Handelskade, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is also gaining interest in the art world with the beautiful murals cropping up throughout the island. Willemstad provides the perfect place to start your journey.
WHAT TO SEE & DO A tour of downtown Willemstad always includes a walk on the landmark Queen Emma Bridge that spans St. Anna Bay. Also known as Our Swinging Old Lady, the pontoon bridge swings open to allow ships through and links the Punda and Otrobanda neighborhoods of Willemstad’s historic center. In Punda, you’ll also find two other well-photographed sites—the giant Dushi and Curaçao signs. Of cultural and historical interest is the Kura Hulanda Museum. Located at the city-center harbor, where Dutch merchants once traded and purchased enslaved Africans, Kura Hulanda has exhibits of the Transatlantic Slave Trade from the Middle Passage to relocation into the New World, as well as African and multicultural heritages that have influenced Curaçaoan life. Another place of interest is the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue & Museum, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. On a stroll through town, you’ll find art galleries, boutiques, and shops inside brightly painted colonial buildings. One place that caught my eye was Art By Eve, which features local handmade art by Elly Hogenes, including the Selma figure (reminiscent of the famous Curaçao chichi doll). Selma is inspired by a “sweet lady from Curaçao” and is found on paintings, driftwood signs, key chains, and postcards. For a unique experience, try a workshop at Serena’s Art Factory. You can’t miss the iconic Chichi dolls (created by Berlin artist Serena Janet Israel)—colorful sculptures of a beloved “well-rounded” Caribbean figure sold throughout Curaçao. Chichi is the Papiamentu word for “big sister,” and represents the wise, eldest daughter, who keeps the family together. You can paint your own souvenir Chichi doll at the factory in Santa Catharina on the east side of the island in the delightful garden. (If you are in Willemstad and can’t make the 12-minute drive, you can attend a workshop at the Chichi shop in Punda). 26 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

INTO THE DEEP Curaçao is excellent for snorkeling. Ocean Encounters provides trips to see the Tugboat, a 30-foot shipwreck, colorful tropical fish and beautiful coral reefs. If this is not your thing, you can get your ocean fix at Mambo Beach (also called Seaquarium Beach because the Seaquarium is located there), hang out at Lions Dive & Beach Resort, and peruse the shops on the boardwalk. Another must is a visit to Shete Boka National Park in Westpunt. While the name stands for “seven inlets,” there are more than seven to see. It begins at Boka Tabla, where waves dramatically crash against an underground cave presenting a striking view and backdrop for photos. For a beach, stop try Playa Knip, also in the area. Curaçao boasts more than 35 beaches, including secluded cove beaches. Playa Knip is suitable for snorkeling from the shore, and if you’re a good swimmer, there’s a nearby reef (but it’s a bit of a hike—or rather, swim). Then take a tour of the Senior Curaçao Liqueur Distillery located in the 17th-century Landhuis Chobolobo. The original liqueur was made from the dried skins of laraha oranges, a variety of local oranges developed from Spanish orange trees. The trees planted by Spanish colonists turned out to be too bitter to eat but made a tasty alcoholic drink. More flavors were introduced, including the famous Blue Curaçao liquor. After the tour, take a mixology lesson and learn how to make your own cocktail.
Shete Boka National Park
DIVINE DINING Curaçao also boasts colorful cuisine. For a lunch break, try Beans in Pietermaai, tucked amongst quaint buildings that look like colorful gingerbread houses with white frosting trim. It’s the island’s first specialty coffee bar and a trendy hotspot, serving coffee, a variety of teas, sandwiches, pastries, and poke bowls. Number 10 housed in the Landhuis Bloemhof garden, serves breakfast and lunch, with a modern, unique menu. At Karakter gaze at the sparkling ocean and nosh on tapas like Bitterballen & Spring Rolls and the Mixed Tapas Platter, delightfully presented sandwiches, and sip refreshing Karakter cocktails. For dinner, Landhuis Brakkeput Mei Mei is an open-air restaurant located on the front terrace of an 18th-century plantation. At night it has a romantic ambiance with lights strung around the trees. There is live entertainment as well. The restaurant serves meat, chicken and fish cooked on a charcoal grill, and Caribbean specialties. Zest Mediterranean on Jan Thiel Beach is lovely at sunset with a Mediterranean menu featuring pasta, seafood, and meat dishes, plus great desserts. Kome (the Papiamentu word for “eat” and you’ll definitely want to eat here) is in the Pietermaai district. The hotspot serves Caribbean and International food. Don’t miss the desserts, which are made from scratch.
HEAVENLY HAVENS Livingstone Jan Thiel Beach Resort features 114 rooms, 41 villas, and 49 apartments surrounded by flora gardens, tropical plants, and palm trees. On the property is a large tropical pool adjacent to Don’s Bar & Restaurant. There’s free access to Jan Thiel Beach at the bottom of the hill, and Jan Thiel Plaza (a beachside center with restaurants, shops, water sports, a casino, and more) is just a two-minute stroll away. Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort has 350 luxury rooms and suites located within a two thousand-acre gated plantation. The inviting scene is complete with a beautiful white sandy beach, three resort-style pools, 24-hour fitness center, spa and wellness center, two marinas, and more. The fine-dining restaurant Shore features an open kitchen overseen by Chef Heinrich Hortencia. For more information on Curaçao, visit curaçao.com. •

PALM BEACH
Stylish Pool Colony Hotel
THE #1 WINTER PLAYGROUND FOR THE RICH & FAMOUS By Maxine Albert
or many New Yorkers, the first wintry chill also cues the warm, comforting sensation that soon it will be time to head down to sunny Florida. Certain places ooze luxury at the mere mention of their name, and Palm Beach is one of them. Palm Beach became the winter playground thanks to oil tycoon Henry Flagler’s vision. In 1894 he built the railroad that brought the mega-wealthy here. This posh enclave, home to 38 billionaires owning grand estates on ritzy Billionaires Row—looks every bit as fashionable as its glamorous habitués. Think Bentleys, Rolls-Royces, palatial Greco-Roman mansions, socialites, extravagant parties, and bubbly to spare. The Season kicks off in November and continues through April with a full calendar of lunch events, soirees, and the crème de la crème of charity galas. Though things have changed quite a bit since the days of Henry Flagler, the enchanting locale with its striking European architecture still radiates a delightful cocktail of elegance, class, and charm. This attracts many types of travelers—from the stylish set to anyone seeking sun-kissed beaches, swaying palms, azure blue water, gorgeous resorts, golf and gastronomic indulgences such as the annual Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival taking place Dec. 12-15 this year. 28 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
A SHOPPING MECCA
The four-block stretch of Mediterranean-styled Worth Avenue is arguably the most beautiful shopping venue in the country with its winding alleyways, manicured courtyards, and scenic piazzas called vias. Stroll the pretty palm treelined promenade dotted with upscale designer boutiques such as Gucci, Chanel, Valentino, Pucci, Cartier, and Louis Vuitton, among others. Many of the stores have bowls of water and treats out front. Here dogs are as cosseted as their owners.
LILLY-LAND
For the quintessential Palm Beach Look: Lilly Pulitzer’s colorful resort wear has been synonymous with Palm Beach since 1959. Her mother was a Standard Oil heiress; her husband was the grandson of the publishing Pulitzer. Last December, the brand opened its new flagship store on Worth Avenue, where you can have both a handbag and a dress customized just for you. If you enjoy the personalized touch, continue to the nearby showroom where the Ferretti Group will build you a bespoke yacht.
DIVINE DINING
Don’t miss those hidden hideaways off Worth Avenue. You’ll find art galleries, home furnishings, gifts, and antique shops plus some of the best dining available. Renato’s upscale Italian restaurant, a local favorite on Via Mizner, offers superb classical fare amid a sophisticated old-world ambiance. While lunching on delicious red beet fettuccine with crab and black truffle butter served on Pierre Deux linen and Limoges china, I was also treated to a fashion show. This has been a Palm Beach tradition that started in the 1920s at the Everglades Club. Stunning models swanned around the eatery donning lustrous golden South Sea pearls from Jewelmer on Worth Avenue. It was quite a temptation. For dinner Chef Daniel Boulud’s stylish eatery, Café Boulud which is housed in the Brazilian Court Hotel, serves up traditional French fare with the top local ingredients and seafood, including to die for sashimi. Other trendy haunts: Būccan Restaurant makes everyone’s favorite list, the place to see and be seen. For a drink, tuck into legendary Ta-boo, where it’s said the Bloody Mary was first concocted to soothe heiress Barbara Woolworth Hutton after a night of partying. Beachy Chic Room Colony Hotel

HEAVENLY HAVEN
The iconic pink-hued Colony Hotel, a paragon of glamour and grace, is the perfect place to park yourself while visiting Palm Beach. It’s ideally located, just steps from the ocean and Worth Avenue. Since 1947, the hotel has hosted notable guests, including The Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Frank Sinatra, and President Clinton, among many others. For 2019, The Colony unveiled a fabulous updated look under new owners Andrew and Sarah Wetenhal—splashed out in pink, green, blue, and coral. Décor is whimsical beachy-chic with banana leaf carpets, and palm frond adorned upholstery. Pink doggie beds are provided during your stay so that four-legged guests can enjoy a cushy getaway too. For beach lovers, a buggy takes guests to and from the nearby beach, complete with powder pink umbrellas, chairs, and picnic lunch. Or you can loll on the sun loungers by the resort pool. In early 2020, the hotel will debut The Colony Event Garden and a newly designed pool. CPB, their new restaurant helmed by British Executive Chef Tom Whitaker, offers a contemporary American cuisine with a roster of live jazz and top local DJ’s in CPB Bar. Dining on exceptional seared pompano, blue crab, and yellowfin tuna tartare, while snuggled up in a lemon printed cozy couch, I thought, “Isn’t Palm Beach Grand!” For more information on Palm Beach, visit thepalmbeaches.com. • HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 29

THE PRESERVE CLUB & RESIDENCES A TRADITIONAL CONTINENTAL HUNT By Bob Curley
ordie the hunting dog waited patiently on station one of the shooting “bungs” during a recent private pheasant hunt at The Preserve Club and Residences in Richmond, Rhode Island. The Labrador Retriever—a veteran of hunts from Nebraska was getting a little antsy waiting for some of the huntsman to hit their mark. With each shot, Gordie would strain at his tether, only to be soothed and encouraged by his handler, Dave Olson. Finally, someone found the right range and angle, catching a pheasant soaring overhead with a blast from a 12-gauge shotgun as the shooter steadied himself before taking aim again.
SAFETY FIRST
The continental hunt, one of the many organized activities available to residents and members of The Preserve, was the centerpiece of a day-long event beginning with a lavish breakfast spread in the members lodge, followed by a detailed safety briefing delivered in a handsomly appointed member lounge by owner and developer Paul Mihailides, himself an experienced hunter, and operations director Eric Northup. Among the main takeaways: don’t start shooting until the horn sounds to begin the hunt, and don’t leave the shooting station until the next horn sounds. And, in the two-person bungs, don’t cross the field of fire with your fellow shooter. All sound advice. 30 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
THE WIDE OPEN SPACES
Thus prepared, we headed out to the “backyard” of the 3,500-acre sporting club and residential community, a swath of pristine New England woodland undeveloped save for recreation facilities. For the continental pheasant hunt, the 30-odd participants—including Preserve members and their guests from various parts of the United States and abroad—were divided into groups and placed in one of 12 shooting stations. No less than 1,500 pheasants, were released in stages from a central tower measuring 210 feet tall from the lowest station, making it the tallest such tower in the Northeast ensuring birds fly high and fast which is most desireable for upland hunting enthusiasts. Throughout the day, participants rotating from station to station in 15-minute intervals, were afforded an opportunity to shoot from different angles and positions. For a little extra challenge, a “money bird” tied with a pink ribbon was released among the flock. Pheasants are large, colorful birds prone to soaring, but also can fly at up to 60 mph, so bringing one down with buckshot isn’t as easy as it might look. Whether by luck or a little skill, I managed to hit a bird on my third shot, much to the delight of Gordie posted at my station.
A CLASSIC DAY
On a grey New England fall day, a crackling hilltop bonfire and hot coffee helped warm up the hunters, while hot toddies and other warming spirits were put on hold until after the three-hour hunt. By the time the day was done, the hunters had “harvested” about a quarter of the released birds, and many more would be taken the next day in a cleanup hunt, with dogs deployed to flush the birds from their hiding places in a classic upland hunt across hundreds of acres of The Preserve’s property. Meanwhile, participants gathered back in the lodge for a white-tablecloth dinner of filet mignon, lobster, and pheasant pot pie, accompanied by fine wine and stories of the day’s adventures. Pheasants would be cleaned and dressed for another meal, and after a farewell toast the group broke up, some returning to their private homes at The Preserve, others to lodging in the club’s townhomes, cabins, condos, and perhaps even the yurts or treehouses on the property. From field to table, we savored the experience of the hunt at The Preserve, where the fun extends well beyond hunting to include an 18-hole championship golf course, America’s longest indoor range with with 150-yard shooting lanes, the two story Sporting Shoppe, tennis, sporting clays courses, fishing, hiking, and equestrian. Our day-long continental pheasant hunt featured just a taste of The Preserve’s culinary program, which features farm-to-table fine dining in an intimate atmosphere, an extensive wine program, and a casually elegant cocktail lounge styled after a vintage hunting lodge. PEDDLER’S VILLAGE ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
he holidays are fast approaching, you’ve run out of ideas for unique gift giving. Why not tackle that shopping list and enjoy a relaxing getaway to the bucolic countryside of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, at the same time. Peddler’s Village in Lahaska, PA, is a colonial-themed shopping and entertainment village set on 42 acres of landscaped gardens and winding red brick pathways. Just 90 minutes from Manhattan, the Village encompasses 65 unique shops and boutiques, six restaurants, the luxurious 70-room Golden Plough Inn, and Giggleberry Fair (a family entertainment center), you could say Peddler’s Village is quite the experience. Following a family tradition of hospitality that dates back to 1763, Earl Hart Jamison founded Peddler’s Village in 1962 on six acres of property in Lahaska, once known as Hentown. Jamison transformed the property’s chicken hatchery, barn, and chicken coops into 14 shops and the Cock ‘n Bull Restaurant. In 1989 Jamison fulfilled a lifetime dream to continue the family tradition of hospitality with the opening of The Golden Plough Inn. Characterized by cozy fireplaces, down quilts, and window seats overlooking ancient oak trees, guest rooms and suites at The Golden Plough Inn are located in The Main Inn and tucked above the shops and restaurants throughout the Village. From casual to upscale, dining choices at Peddler’s Village will satisfy every taste. • The Village’s flagship restaurant. The Cock ‘n Bull, serves traditional American classics such as Country Chicken Pot Pie and Beef Burgundy in a colonial setting featuring many of the Jamison family’s private collection of fine art and antiques. For more informal fare, the restaurant’s Hart’s Tavern serves a traditional pub menu. • Earl’s New American pairs the rustic charm of a Bucks County farmhouse with the contemporary vibe of an upscale bistro. The cuisine is modern and creatively presented. Be sure to try the Braised Molasses Short Ribs or the Shrimp and Grits with Orange and Rosemary Marmalade. The Buttonwood Grill, a more casual choice, is known for its burger—and has garnered “Best Burger in Bucks” many times. Fresh ground daily from chuck, brisket, and short rib, the burgers are served in a variety of exciting ways. The Mediterranean with feta cheese, tzatziki sauce, and red onion is a good choice. An excellent draft beer selection provides a perfect accompaniment. 32 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

555 WEST END AVENUE OLD BECOMES NEW AGAIN By AP Connolly
55 West End Avenue is a masterwork of architecture that stands out even among its rarefied pre-war neighbors. Built in 1908 as a private school, the red-brick, Collegiate Gothic-style edifice sports limestone trim, quoin window surrounds, crenelated turrets, and other touches that lend the building a majesty at once bespoke and whimsical. “This is a rare condominium offering in a perfect Upper West Side location. It’s surrounded by classic architecture, beautiful parks, and culture,” said Cathy Taub, Senior Global Real Estate Advisor and Associate Broker for Sotheby’s International Realty (handling all sales with Compass Development). HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 37
GRACE & FUNCTIONALITY Built by acclaimed architect William A. Boring, 555 West End Avenue is a recognizable landmark in the Riverside-West End Historic District with perfect details and incredible interior architecture defined by soaring 12- to 20-foot ceilings and towering transom windows. Tamarkin Co. has restored and transformed the building to create a collection of homes with the grace and functionality of classic Upper West Side residences paired with the scale desired in Downtown lofts. The condominium features no more than two residences per floor, and the homes are spacious, warm, and inviting, with grand entry foyers, walk-in pantries, eatin-kitchens, and abundant natural light. The former school’s unique features made for a perfect condo redevelopment, which has been transformed into 13 spacious units. A stately sidewalk moat lends an equal degree of privacy and separation from the sidewalk. True to Tamarkin Co.’s signature aesthetic, the interiors combine beautiful materials with modern conveniences in a refined palette, which creates consistency and tranquility. Expansive kitchens are adorned with solid white oak cabinetry designed by Tamarkin Co. and handcrafted by Christopher Peacock, honed Pietra Cardosa stone floors, polished Arabescato marble slab countertops and backsplashes, and Wolf, Sub-Zero and Miele appliances. Hand-selected Calacatta Gold marble slabs, custom white oak vanities by Christopher Peacock, and Lefroy Brooks fixtures adorn the master bathrooms.

THE RESIDENCES Each home at 555 West End Avenue has a unique layout, including sprawling flats, townhomes with private entrances on West End Avenue, and specialized residences born from quintessential spaces found in a historic private school. Stunning in its scale and luminosity, The Solarium Penthouse, a three bedroom residence crafted out of the school’s former gymnasium, boasts a remarkable great room with a soaring barrel-vaulted ceiling that rises 20 feet, a massive skylight, and a floor-to-ceiling wall of windows that opens onto a private south-facing terrace. Additionally, the school’s former library has been transformed into a spectacular five-bedroom duplex residence called The Library that is without equal on the Upper West Side. The residence features an open-plan great room and kitchen that stretches 42 feet in length and boasts towering windows and 18.5-foot-tall ceilings.

LUXE FEATURES In addition to restoring and reimagining existing interior space, the conversion has introduced luxuriant features where there were none before, including an around-the-clock attended lobby finished in travertine, Calacatta Crema marble, white oak, and brushed bronze; a fitness center that looks out onto the rear courtyard; and an oakwainscoted rec room with a bar, billiards, darts, and a large-screen TV. “Discerning buyers want historic architecture but without compromising contemporary conveniences, and 555 West End Avenue offers that complete package. These homes are truly special, as Tamarkin Co. envisioned them,” said Alexa Lambert of Stribling Marketing Associates. Pricing starts at $7.9 million for a four-bedroom residence, with The Library available for $10.5 million, and The Solarium Penthouse for $18 million. COMING TO LIFE
THE TRANSFORMATION OF BEDSTUY By Bailey Beckett
here was once a time that the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood was not associated with words like “picturesque” or “luxury.” How times have changed. As gentrification spreads throughout the New York area, the Brooklyn enclave is fast becoming a worthy destination— for residents, businesses, and real estate agents hopping on the trend. Nowhere is this more evident than in a five-bedroom, four level home at 114 Monroe Street. Designed and built by architect Rafi Elbaz, the building is located on a tree-lined block on the Clinton/BedStuy border. “Restrained sensibility” is how agents at Douglas Elliman describe the impeccable property, designed with discipline and an exquisite eye for space, light and movement. Measuring 4,200 square feet above ground, the two-family home also includes five and a half baths and an upper triplex with five outdoor spaces incorporating green roofs. The cellar below contains both the mechanical room and a Zen-like recreation room with full bath, wet bar and its own castin-place rock garden. On the garden level, there is a two bedroom/one bath apartment. No design detail is overlooked. The space features hand-applied muted patina ash European wood windows and door package, pickled wide-plank oak flooring, and comprehensive smart home technology. Natural stone, concrete and porcelain terra cotta tiles adorn bathrooms and accessory floors throughout the home, in addition to recreated exposed brick, hand applied mineral concrete wall treatments, custom black steel entry closet doors and a magnificent custom steel staircase with American walnut treads. The open kitchen includes custom built American vertically grained walnut cabinets, concrete Caesar stone counters and all the requisite high-end appliances and fixtures. New York Lifestyles talked with Rafi Elbaz about this unique property. What made you choose this particular home? The house appealed to me because of its historical value, construction and detail. The lot size is large, and southern light and proximity to the corner allows a more open look and feel. Tell us more about the renovation? This is a gut renovation job where we added a floor and a bulkhead, a back extension and a lower cellar light well. It’s a complex urban job; however, the complexity reflects in the intricate result. Urban renovations are complex on many levels, from permitting and dealing with city agencies to working in confined space to dig, create foundations and deal with neighbors which are naturally impacted by it. One has to manage and negotiate all at once. It’s a craft by itself. How is it to live in a home you are renovating? Knowing how intricate the renovation was, we enjoy the results thoroughly. We planted green roofs on our outdoor spaces (7 in total) which keep the house cool in summer and very comfortable in winter. We watch the hummingbirds and enjoy the wellness it produces. We sip coffee at the morning south facing deck and enjoy sunsets on our glorious roof deck.
114 Monroe Street Bedford-Stuyvesant ©Douglas (Doug) Bowen Douglas Elliman Photography
What design elements can you share about the home? The kitchen has walnut wood and Caesar stone concrete countertops, and European appliances such as Miele, Bosch and Liebherr. Our living room has a fireplace by Napoleon, lights by RH, exposed painted brick and metal details. For the backyard, we utilized the heavy timber beams we salvaged from the building to build and grade. It utilizes rainwater collected in barrels and underground piping to retain water for a slow release back into the ground. The rooftop and outdoor spaces have green roofs with sedums and herbs with rain retainage systems to promote connection to nature and well-being. And the bathrooms include Moroccan hand-crafted tiles and a variety of natural stones combined with the finest fixtures such as Duravit Hansgrohe and Chitterio. What do you think a buyer will enjoy most from the home? Modern living with natural comfort and light. A connection to nature with wonderful plantation, herbs, hummingbirds and butterflies. They can experience the benefits of sustainable and ecological living with a positive impact and year-round comfort.

HOME DÉCOR 2020
THE LATEST TRENDS FROM THE EXPERTS By Alyssa Abrams
his season’s design trends are bold, highly personal and timely. As the Senior Marketing Manager for the iconic Decoration & Design Building (DDB), I identified the top trends while producing the DDB’s industry-leading Fall Market 2019 featuring the theme DESIGN 2020. BOUCLÉ IS THE NEW MONGOLIAN
Remember a few years ago when nearly every interior had to have a Mongolian rug, throw, or pillow? The luxurious and indulgent, yet nearly impossible to maintain textile has given way to a new iteration that is more refined and plays perfectly into our collective need for comfortable elegance. • Design icon Martyn Lawrence Bullard applied Schumacher’s version to Kylie Jenner’s living room sofas and the rest is history. • Renowned for their wools and indulgent textiles, de Le Cuona’s bouclé is offered in a variety of options: their Seahorse, Savage Couture, and Cascade iterations are relaxed, yet luminous as light bounces off the looped surfaces. • Rounding out the trend, the peerless leader in high-end textiles and French craftsmanship, Pierre Frey presents their take on upholstered chairs, pillows, and graceful drapery in a variety of piles. The collection “highlights this noble and universal material while emphasizing its incredible diversity.”

BIOPHILIA Biophilia is a very 2020 term described as a human’s innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. We see this play out in interiors in both obvious and subtler ways. Adding plants and flowers to a space immediately improves the emotion of the environment, as does capitalizing on natural light. However, even incorporating natural fibers like raffia, bamboo and banana leaf can add an element of organic serenity.
CMO
CMO Paris • With the industry opting for natural materials or nature inspired designs, the trend is more accessible. One such brand is D&D Building newcomer, CMO Paris having recently joined Élitis in their showroom on the 6th floor. Their handmade natural fiber, sustainably and ethically sourced wallcoverings and textiles bring the outside in. • Another subtle opportunity to bring nature indoors is hard wood floors. I.J. Peiser’s Sons Fine Wood Floors employs the highest quality wood and finishing techniques to create artisanal works of art for the floor. Their signature Dara Fumed Oak product is offered in a wide variety of natural finishes as well as exotic wood species. Each hand-finished plank varies subtly in tone resulting in an overall beautifully natural appearance.
CMO Raw Materials
SPICE UP YOUR LIFE! The signature colors of this season’s DDB Market were spice colors including turmeric, ochre, and saffron which are seeing saturation across several industries. In design, they have taken on the role of bold accent color applied to everything from sofas to walls. • Farrow & Ball is setting the pace with their recent collaboration with Natural History Museum in London. Their take on the tone is a deeply complex yelloworange color aptly named Dutch Orange No. W76. Bridging two trends—rich spice hues and the aforementioned biophilia—the collection is comprised of colors plucked directly from nature. The story of the Colour by Nature collection has been over two centuries in the making, beginning with the publication of Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours, a groundbreaking classification of recording the exact hues from across the natural world, becoming a resource for scientists and artists alike including Charles Darwin.

Benjamin Moore reveals First Light 2102-70 as their Color of the Year 2020
• Although Benjamin Moore’s soft and subtle First Light named as their color of the year for 2020 may seem a surprising choice, the hue lends itself as a backdrop to the bolder, brighter, richer spice tones of the moment. The multidimensional pink has hints of color from across the spectrum, making it an unexpected neutral foundation. I’m downsizing. Not that my large and medium sized handbags are eBay-bound, but for brunch, browsing and casual nights out, I’m jettisoning big in favor of PaulyJen Belt Bags with Options™. These high end, buttery leather accessories (refined to glam) have already been redefining the Southern California fashion scene with their versatility: they can be worn as a crossbody, attached to a belt around your hip, carried as a clutch or, when you just can’t live without it, tossed into a tote. Groundbreaking designer Paulette Povar’s collection is, in a word, killer. Mine is currently taking Manhattan one rave at a time. Info: paulyjen.com.

THE PAJAMA GAME
SOME LIKE IT HOT
Of life’s interesting factoids, the need for a good night’s sleep tops the list. At Dagsmejan, this means sleep and relaxation-wear that homes in on comfort through fit, softness, and (drum roll, please) temperature. And so the company came up with three categories for their tops, bottoms and sleep dresses: Stay Cool, Stay Warm, and Balance (my five-star choice). Scientifically proven to encourage deeper and longer sleep through natural fabrics, including Nattwell™ made European beech wood, this sleepwear is, in a word, unparalleled. And, since sleepwear can be decidedly personal, there’s always the Dagsmejan gift cards. Info: dagsmejan.com.
Speaking of PJs, whenever the weather would tank, I’d pop mine into the dryer before heading to bed. Sadly, our dryer is no more, but salvation has come in The Pajamas Warming Pouch, a brilliant envelope that wafts sleepwear into delicious warmth courtesy of heating elements (reaching 118 degrees) and a heatretaining thermal satin interior. And yes, it works its magic on other things like knit hats, gloves, towels in 10 minutes or less. Rumor has it this adorable crimson pouch is a best seller because who doesn’t love cozy? Info: hammacher.com.

It comes from Atlanta-based Jennifer J Matchett, the mastermind behind Machete jewelry (she also works in ethically sourced silver and gold). Notably, her collections span any number of jewelry items, as well as hair accessories. Well worth a website visit! Info: shopmachete.com.
Winter resorts are up and running, their snowy slopes well into schuss mode as skiers and snowboarders channel their inner Lindsey Vonn and Shaun White. For women tackling outdoor sports in winter months, keeping warm and looking good de rigueur, is something SKEA Ltd. has been taking seriously for a decade. Of their current fashions, the Andy Baselayer Zip Mock with dry-fit wicking is outstanding. The Andy comes in several patterns, including my choice, Bering Sea Camo, and can be matched with Leggie Base Layer Leggings—cute and functional enough for yoga class or around town. FOR HIM EXPEDITION STYLE He doesn’t have to take his adventurous spirit to arctic proportions— although when it comes to Shackleton’s Hero Sweater he certainly could (looking absolutely smashing the whole time). Lamb’s wool is so irresistibly soft with a cool basketweave detail makes me want to steal this fabulous knit for my own winter wardrobe. Based on the classic turtleneck worn by polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton a century ago, this timeless guy-wear is shipped from the UK posthaste. Info: shakletonlondon.com.
SPIRITED AWAY The party season is upon us so why not reward your bartender in residence with the Billykirk Limited Edition Bartender Bag— nice for mixing it up at home, but awesome for surprise house calls. The full grain leather bag even resembles those carried by doctors once upon a time. But unlike a physician’s carryall, this beauty is filled with an arsenal of mixology tools, such as a Julep strainer, muddler bar spoon, jigger and Hawthorne strainer. Bonus: a secret flap for hiding a favorite holiday quaff. Info: billykirk.com.
KEEPING WATCH
TIME IS MONEY
When a gentleman’s passion for timepieces is reflected in a select few, chances are they need a proper home—something that says individualist with a bit of rugged thrown in for good measure. The Time Capsule watch box from Moral Code, with its elegant blend of superior leather and antique brass, offers just such high-end housing—a perfect fit for seven prized analog (or digital, we don’t judge) treasures. Info: moralcode.com.
With a generous nod to added value, here’s a thought: tuck a Genuine Morgan Silver Dollar Watch inside the watch box before gifting. Using a vintage silver coin (minted from 1878 to 1921) as its watch face, this distinctively masculine timepiece is available in either obverse—Lady Liberty surrounded by 13 stars—or reverse, featuring a bald eagle and mint mark below the wreath. The wear and date of the coin means no two are 100 percent alike and you can personalize the watch with an engraving of up to three letters. Info: hammacher.com.

WELL PLAYED
Let’s face it… literally. Guys are stepping up their self-care game, from workouts to hair care to facial products. In response, the hottest company in anti-aging products DefenAge® Skincare, launched DefenAge Men’s Kit, a results-driven regimen designed specifically for men. Its straightforward protocol utilizes a facial cleanser, skin renewing cream and serum, and exfoliating mask. No big deal, just results. As for the gift aspect, it’s comes with a hemp sports towel and sleek black leather toiletry bag. Info: defenage.com.

This compact rollup version (picnics, hikes, campouts or posh hotel suites) arrives in a stunning Southwestern pattern with wooden accessories. Mine promptly seduced me back to my love of the backgammon. (There’s also an equally fabulous chess/checkers version.) Info: pendleton-usa.com.
POWER LUNCH
TOTALLY IN CHARGE
For the metro-foodie in your life: the TW Lunch Tote. A study in unfussy good looks, staggering capacity, and insulated compartments, this baby is a sweet traveling companion, and not just for lunch. Made of sturdy hand-stitched vegan leather, the standard version holds a day’s worth of food—or the wherewithal for a small party. Its mini counterpart is no slouch either. I sailed into a meeting with homemade cookies with no one the wiser, until the dramatic reveal, of course. Info: twtote.com.
Forget about wimpy chargers that barely get you through a subway ride. The Stash Portable Power Bank is nothing short of a high capacity dynamo, keeping cell phones up and running for 24 hours or giving a large tablet a healthy six-hour boost. The recipient of this nifty bit of techno prowess will no doubt appreciate the edgy skull logo and effortless design. But when it comes to color selection for me there’s only one variation worthy of my iPhone: PsychoTropical. Info: skullcandy.com.

FOR KIDS MANE EVENT: DANCE PARTY! Along with unicorns, llamas are topping the toy charts as they charm the socks off little (and not so little) kids. In the animated, ultraendearing category, you’re not going to find a more interactively fun and funny toy than Boppi The Dancing Llama. This fantastically fetching, laugh-inducing robotic BFF-to-be not only plays three short songs “to bop, spin and dance to,” she shakes her furry llama booty and head with gusto, tossing her multi-colored mane as she spins 360 degrees, and to ensure nothing flies off, Boppi’s wide-eyes fetching features are embroidered onto her white—or purple—face! MISCHIEF MANAGED Of the thousands of Harry Potter items on the market—and I admit to owning a few, albeit mostly books—none of them come close to capturing the supernatural effects of the films like the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak/Invisibility App by Wow!. Through Cloak-App interaction, state-of-the-art magic allows you to appear to disappear. All that can be seen on your smartphone or tablet is whatever bits you leave unwrapped. Android or iOS, indoors or out, the end result is astounding photos and videos. Imagine your head floating serenely in front of the Christmas tree… or a disembodied family portrait. And you thought a sleigh pulled by reindeer was bizarre. Info: amazon.com/invisibility-cloak.
PITCH PERFECT
BOWED OVER IN JOJO LAND
In the way distant past, I once knew a pianist who was rarely without his portable electronic Casio keyboard. I loved it, too, for things like pop serenades in the park and improvised jazz riffs in the kitchen. Digital savvy having exploded since then, I now find myself blown away by Cassio’s Casiotone CT-S200. Riding my first keyboard learning curve on this lightweight, six pound instrument, I watch in awe as my fingers fly across its 61 keys and tap into 50 different tracks, 400 tones, and 77 rhythms. Just imagine it in the hands of a piano prodigy or actual musician to-be! It even comes in three colors: red, black and white. Info: casio.com.
Attention JoJo Siwa fans and the grownups who love them: there’s a new gift in town that cannot be topped, except with one of JoJo’s vibrant signature bows, of course! I’m talking about the JoJo Siwa Bow Fashion Headphones, the holiday season’s tween must-have teaming clever techno with the “Kid in a Candy Store” singer’s sense of fashion and musical exuberance. The boldest of bows (removable and interchangeable with other JoJo bows) sits atop headphones that invite the wearer to rock out to their favorite songs. As JoJo says, “There’s always time to grow older. You can never grow younger”! Info: nickelodeon-holidaygiftguide2019.com.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK
THE ULTRA-CUDDLY CATERPILLAR
Your kid doesn’t have to be a budding geologist to be up for Discovery Break Your Own Geodes. Really, how fierce is it to be able to split open one of these crystal-filled bad boys and see exactly what jagged luminous formation lies inside? Each kit comes with directions that explain methods to get the job done (yes, there’s more than one), along with three large, natural geodes, a magnifying glass, kid-size safety goggles, directions, and a triviarich poster. Adult supervision is suggested. Info: walmart.com.
She’s not yet three, but she already has everyone in her tiny palm. Of the many things that make her happy, she’s particularly smitten with her butterfly mobile. So when I found The Musical Plush Caterpillar—a multi-colored five foot expanse of adorable—I thought, why not see if she’ll be just as taken with this musical butterfly prequel. Delectably soft, she threw herself onto the Caterpillar’s eight sections, discovering along the way that each segment plays a different piano note. Much giggling. Soon she’ll learn to press the antennae to hear “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” or “The Alphabet Song”, but for now it’s one note at a time. Info: hammacher.com.

Ah, the retro delights of foosball but in a galaxy far, far away. Thanks to the mythic and enduring world of Star Wars™, this Galactic Civil War battle site stands firm and determined to maintain its multigenerational appeal, no matter how heated the competition. But before you launch into deciding whether your allegiance is to the Empire or the Rebellion, you’ll want to take a minute to admire the high quality and sturdiness of The Star Wars™ Lightsaber Duel Foosball Table and marvel at its arresting graphics. At some point, though, you’ll have to choose between red and blue before facing your opponent. May the force be with you. Info: amazon.com.

FOR HOME SWEET SURRENDER How often do you hear about a chocolate company that actually zeroes in on culinary trends? Hilliards Chocolates has been doing just that since its founding in 1924. Now the familyowned company has brought its expertise in artisan chocolates and specialty candies to the holiday season by creating two blissful excuses to indulge: Peppermint Bark & Limited Edition Hanukkah Bark. Attractively packed in hand-carved keepsake boxes, both feature Hilliards signature dark chocolate, creamy white chocolate (imbued with natural oil of peppermint), and crushed peppermint candy topping—red and green for Christmas; blue and white for Hanukkah. Info: hilliardscandy.com.
HEARTH & HOME When you live in Manhattan, you can pretty much give up on having a wood-burning fireplace, and if your space is miniscule you can also rule out a spacious gas alternative (a la Property Brothers). Yet the intimacy of a fireside gathering is still possible with The Monogrammed Tabletop Fireplace from Hammacher Schlemmer. Sitting two inches above a stable surface, the stainless steel burner rests between two panes of tempered glass, becoming a flickering centerpiece for a coffee table or stand. And because the heat is generated upwards and laterally even wood finishes are safe. Clean burning with no fumes, this is truly a favorite winter discovery. Info: hammacher.com.
THE CHILL OF IT ALL
SEEING STARS
The instructions say to pop these unusual glasses into the freezer upside down for at least two hours after which they’ll retain an ideal white wine temperature of 43 to 53 degrees for hours. Should red wine be your pleasure, skip the freezer in favor of the fridge and after a couple hours they’ll be at the perfect cellar temperature (aka 58 to 60 degrees). In either case, there’s no room for error once the precisely engineered HOST® Wine FREEZE™ Cooling Cups do their job. It all comes down to the cups plastic walls that are filled with a unique gel that works its magic once chilled. Two thumbs up. Info: truebrands.com.
Starlight is something romance ballads thrive on, and yet come December, stars and lights take a turn for the festive. Certainly white and multi-colored lights get their twinkle on as snowflakes and Christmas tree garlands. But aside from the glow of menorahs, Hanukkah has been a relatively late bloomer when it comes to holiday illumination and it’s the Festival of Lights! Looking into Target’s Hanukkah Star of David Novelty Silhouette Lights can make all the difference, and while each string is comprised of 10 bulbs, keep in mind ”the more the merrier” so go ahead, light up your holiday world in star-studded style! WORTH THE WEIGHT New Yorkers know stress. So much so, it’s almost a badge of honor. Still, we work to combat the effects through everything from therapy and meditation to spas and cocktails. I found something better. The Huggaroo Cooling Weighted Blanket, a beautifully pro-active anxiety reducer using “deep pressure therapy” to lower stress hormones and boost serotonin and dopamine levels. At 15 pounds, this silken blanket is cool during the summer while adapting to winter through the addition of one of the company’s velvety duvet covers. Nothing short of life changing (I speak from experience), this is the ultimate feel-good gift. Info: huggaroo.com.
WHO COOKS IN A PINEAPPLE UNDER THE SEA? Rather puckish, seriously yellow, and most assuredly SpongeBob. Do you know what a giggly tidy whities-wearing sponge is doing in a sophisticated home gift section? Bringing his loopy optimism to winter’s overcast days and early nights, of course. Only now he’s doing it via the SpongeBob Slow Cooker bearing several of his signature facial expressions. Cranky? You need this. Don’t want to fuss with dinner? You need this. Depressed? You need this. Little kids running amok? You absolutely need this. More importantly, you need to share the silly with like-minded Sponge lovers on your gift list. PARADISE BY THE CANDLE’S LIGHT
GRAND FINALE
It must have started decades ago with Book of the Month Club, or maybe Fruit of the Month, but once the Internet and fashionistas got rolling, the deliveries of all kinds of items—from handpicked wardrobe pieces to makeup to boxes filled with a variety of surprises—are now available monthly, quarterly, you name it. One of the most unique I’ve encountered, and one that makes a soothing statement, is Vellabox, a curated candle subscription service offering natural, hand-poured candles in seasonally inspired scents. Lovingly presented and packaged, the candles really do lighten the spirit of the recipient. Info: vellabox.com.
The tradition of toasting the New Year with a bit of the bubbly actually dates back 1500 years (yikes, right?). Fast forward to the 16th century when only the rich could afford the religious honor of sipping the “holy” drink. Fortunately, that changed, as did the idea that French Champagne was the only sparkling wine worth considering. We’re so much smarter now. Presented in an artistically festive bottle, California’s Chandon Limited-Edition Brut Winter 2019, comes in both standard and magnum size. Harvested under the stars, the wine charms with a wonderfully finessed flavor— most excellent for ringing in 2020. Info: chandon.com.

BITS & BAILEY
THE WHO, WHAT & WOW OF THE LUXE SCENE By Bailey Beckett
t’s Bailey’s favorite time of year! The air is filled with holiday cheer. Snowflakes are falling and mail boxes are snug Christmas wishes. I admit, I’m a few years late in sending mine, so this tasty column will need to suffice. And, of course, there’s plenty of morsels to keep Santa plump with glee. So, rejoice dears and spread the cheer. THE ULTIMATE CHRISTMAS LIST The best gift under the tree is a catalog about gifts to put under the tree. That’s right, the beloved Neiman Marcus Christmas Book and its legendary Fantasy Gifts have arrived … and are they ever! “For the 60th anniversary of Fantasy Gifts, we’ve pulled out all the stops—both with the gifts themselves and the way we’re unveiling them to customers,” said Lana Todorovich, Neiman’s President and Chief Merchandising Officer. Mission Accomplished! Among this year’s offerings? • We’ll start with my favorite: a 007 Aston Martin designed by Bond himself, Daniel Craig. The limited-edition DBS Superleggera comes in inky blue and features a powerful twin-turbo 5.2-liter V12 engine. The gift also comes with an all-platinum Seamaster Diver 300M OMEGA timepiece and tickets to the world premiere of No Time to Die coming out in 2020. And it’s priced appropriately at $700,007.
Aston Martin
• I’m also fascinated with the gift of Kim Kardashian’s make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic, who will glam you up for an hour, share his favorite products and make you the star of a video for his Instagram. The package includes travel to and from his studio, first class. For $400,000, it better be! • Perhaps you would like to rub elbows with the celebrity elite at New York Fashion Week. As a guest of Neiman Marcus, you’ll get front row seats to all the hottest shows, and a look from each designer. The gift includes travel, accommodations, styling, glam and everything in between. The $250,000 is steep, but this is a present that can’t be bought (until now!). Of course, you’ll need something truly fabulous to wear, so why not splurge. For $125,000, designer Louboutin and his artisans will craft a bespoke pair of shoes just for you (with an original sketch!), in addition to gifting you five pairs from his collection, all from his famous boutique on rue Jean Jacques Rousseau. The package also includes dinner at Michelin-starred Restaurant Divellec, a show at the legendary Crazy Horse cabaret and accommodations at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Paris. • If Louboutin’s are not your jam, consider sneakers from Jeff Staple, the hottest name in street footwear. The $110,000 package includes travel to Tokyo to meet the designer, eight pairs from his collaborations, and a VIP stay in the city, including dinner with Jeff at Narisawa, shopping in Ginza and Shibuya and accommodations at the Aman Tokyo. A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING A far more practical gift, but no less fabulous, is a*line Pilates on Brooklyn’s Carroll Street. The studio, founded by Carey Macaleer, is the hot/cool den for New York’s finest: celebs, athletes, VIPs and well, anyone looking for improvement in strength, muscle elasticity, posture and alignment. “At a*line, we use a simple mantra: strength for life, which means using a classical Pilates approach tailored to each person’s individual goals, every day of their lives,” says Macaleer, a professional dancer who discovered Pilates at the young age of 12. “The sessions are an experience.” a*line offers classes, private sessions, body training curriculums, and pre- and post-natal programs to strengthen the pelvis. Macaleer is known especially for her custom “Wellness Hour,” a tailored Pilates workout with guided stretching, hand or foot MELT Method—which restores the body’s connective tissues. “Pilates helps you to learn how to engage certain muscle groups that may not be firing so the body works evenly and systematically helping to improve balance, flexibility and deep core strength,” says Macaleer. “A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured,” she explains. “The Pilates body is long and lean.” With a*line it’s custom and fabulous. Info: alinepilatesnyc.com. Christmas Carol Tea
A YARN ABOUT THE YARD Bailey admits he’s late to the game here. Going all the way from the Upper East Side to a glittering shopping mall seemed redundant given his proximity to Madison Avenue. But I’ve been schooled during three recent trips to Hudson Yards, where I experienced its boutiques, restaurants and attractions (the outdoor Vessel installation is massive!) I was especially charmed by the Hudson Yards Grill, the new steakhouse from Chef Michael Lomonaco and the Himmel Hospitality Group. The large restaurant, modern, sexy and sophisticated, expertly marries a convivial bar (perfect for after work crowds), bustling dining room and open-air kitchen (which features a rotisserie with baby pigs slowly roasting underneath pineapples that drip juices onto the bronzed meat), plus a modern art-laden décor complete with painting by David Hockney. And the menu is contemporary, filled with American favorites like Prime Rib with Bone Marrow Toast, the Dry-aged LaFrieda Beef Burger, Grilled Pizzas, Lobster Rolls, and Nigiri and Maki Sushi from chefs who trained at Masa. It’s the perfect post-shopping destination. Info: hudsonyardsgrill.com. 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION

TEA FOR YOU One of my favorite traditions this time of year is Holiday Tea at the Baccarat, the ultra-exclusive hotspot nestled majestically on West 53rd Street. Owning to its namesake’s legacy, the hotel has imagined tea packages fit for royalty. The “Le Petit Prince” service, inspired by The Little Prince fable by French writer Antoine De Saint-Exupery, includes Ham and Cheddar Tartes, Comte Crepes, Gruyere Biscuits, Chicken and Waffles, a Chocolate Brownie Tree, Coconut Cake Pops, a chocolate brownie tree, coconut cake pops, Speculaas Snowflake and Almond Cake, best enjoyed with hot cocoa. There’s also the “Christmas Carol” tea service, an ode to the 1843 classic by Charles Dickens featuring savories and sweets and warm house made scones. Info: baccarathotels.com.
WINTERY NIGHTS The Meatpacking District has renewed buzz (well hello, Hermes!), making it a must-stop during holiday shopping. Put a cherry on top of that sundae with The Lodge at STK Rooftop, a cozy, ski-chalet experience blending STK’s awardwinning menu with an ultra-chic ambiance and a mountain cabinlike setting. Not your daddy’s steakhouse by any means, STK has distinguished itself across the country for its upscale setting, delectable menus, stylish décor and even live entertainment. And now, a boozy winter wonderland. Bailey will be by the fireplace and he’d like a Macallan 12 on the rocks (little cubes, please) with a splash of water. So, don’t be late. Indigo Exterior
A favorite during the holidays is mixing holiday shopping with a stay at a cool New York hotel. What better way to relax than enjoy an inventive cocktail at the bar, cozy up by a fireplace, or just laze inside your room. Well, hold on, dear readers, because I found one … in Williamsburg, which isn’t just for hipsters. Not with sleek hotels like Hotel Indigo dotting the skyline. The new boutique property brings a sleek design-forward vibe to the previously industrial neighborhood, a perfect blend among the warehouses and factories surrounding the area. With 187 rooms, including 25 suites, the hotel also features a pool complete with open-air sun deck (and fully stocked bar!). The piece de resistance: the dual-level Kitsch led by Executive Chef Chai Trivedi, boasting indoor and outdoor seating, al fresco dining, a playful menu and craft cocktails—all in a chic setting befitting the hipster mecca. The hotel, with skyline views of Brooklyn and Manhattan, is steps away from the city’s most vibrant nightlife, dining and shopping. REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME
STORE WARS
TWO BEHEMOTH DEPARTMENT STORES CHANGE NYC’S REAL ESTATE LANDSCAPE By Bailey Beckett
hey are on brand the moment you walk into the door. At the new Nordstrom, on West 57th Street, the greetings are warm and effusive. Staff are genuinely happy to see you. At Neiman Marcus, in Hudson Yards, that reception is more measured, almost Victorian. Instead of a hug, you get an approving gesture, as if you’ve made the cut. They are living up to their legends, that’s for sure. And trying to become one in New York’s ever-changing retail wars. With Lord &Taylor closed and Barneys in liquidation, it’s jarring, yet hopeful, to see two esteemed shopping brands invest over $1 billion collectively into building two huge, glittering oases. NORDSTROM James Carpenter Design Associates Nordstrom, known for their impeccable customer service, just opened its largest store to date: occupying the base of the new Central Park Tower (a.k.a., the tallest residential building in the world) and measuring 320,000 square feet over seven levels, it has been deemed the company’s flagship store. “We’re building in the context of the world’s greatest stores and hope to create an experience for customers that serves as a destination and is authentically Nordstrom,” said Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores. “We chose this location purposefully as the West Side retail environment is growing rapidly, and we wanted to be part of a residential neighborhood. We’re opening a store that’s commuter and tourist friendly—and is just steps away from Central Park, the single largest attraction in New York City.” Through this store, the chain is raising its luxury cred, showcasing brands as varied as Dries Van Noten, Givenchy, Saint Laurent, Vince, Ted Baker London, Madewell, Reformation and Topshop, complemented by an extensive selection of accessory brands like Longchamp, Chloe, Valentino, Fendi, Loewe, MCM and Coach, among others. What Nordstrom is known for especially is shoes, a tradition the dates back to its founding in 1901, and here is no exception: spread over three floors—that’s right, we said three—it includes designers like Gucci, Prada, Christian Louboutin, Golden Goose, Tory Burch, Birkenstock, UGG, Steve Madden, Nike and more. In fact, J.Lo’s favorite Louboutin occupied a pop-up shop on the first floor of the store to celebrate its opening and offered custom selections exclusive to Nordstrom. Nordstrom NYC
Nordstrom NYC Broadway Bar
Its emphasis on beauty is also impressive. Located on two floors, among the largest spaces in New York, it offers products from 100 different brands, including Armani, Dior, MAC, La Prairie, Byredo, Le Labo, Diptyque and Creed. Among its unique features: • Fragrance Finder, an interactive quiz designed to narrow down the perfect scent, including a button to press and smell the desired scent; • Skincare Finder to assess the individual needs of each customer and recommend helpful products; • Beauty Stylist Virtual Mirror, an interactive mirror that allows customers to virtually ‘try on’ trend makeup looks.
Customers looking for a bigger transformation can go upstairs to Nordstrom Beauty Haven where the most-branded beauty services come together under one roof, including Base Coat manicures, Sisley and Heyday facials, blowouts by Dry Bar, eyebrow shaping by Anastasia Beverly Hills and threading by Blink Brow Bar, St. Tropez spray tans, The Light Salon light therapy, and for the first-time at a department store injectables with Kate Sommerville. “We’re focused on having the best product and creating a sense of Nordstrom NYC 57th Street discovery and newness for our customers,” Nordstrom said. “Speed and convenience are the greatest luxuries for customers, and perhaps no one understands that more than New Yorkers. The store will serve customers on their terms through services like 24/7 Online Order Pickup, Style Boards, Personal Stylists, Beauty Stylists, Same-Day Delivery, Tailoring & Express Alterations, and more.” But like The Metropolitan Museum of Art, it’s impossible to do in one day. You might need a week. Thankfully, the store is up for the challenge. There are six bars and restaurants spread throughout the store. Its signature restaurant Wolf by Chef Ethan Stowell, voted Food and Wine’s Best New Chef in America, offers Italian-inspired small plates in an ambiance that is both comfy and refined, and includes a vantage of West 57th and Broadway. At Jeannie’s, Chef Tom Douglas presents a more casual menu, featuring pizza, pasta and salads on the store’s lower level floor. Douglas also oversees Hani Pacific next door, providing Pacific Rim-inspired cuisine. There’s also the family friendly Bistro Verde, with a large contemporary menu. And don’t forget cocktails! Nordstrom offers two distinct venues, including the Broadway Bar, offering stunning views of the famed avenue, and the Shoe Bar, located smack dab in the middle of the shoe floor. HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS FESTIVE TIPS FROM LARRY SCOTT By Elizabeth Darwen
ong before he was lauded as the Master of the Extraordinary, Lawrence Scott Gottesman was overseeing his catering business and subsequently a very successful Long Island restaurant, Larry And The Redhead. It wasn’t long before word spread of his incredible celebrations. In 1989, he established Lawrence Scott Events and instantly gained a reputation for his exceptional, one-of-a-kind celebrations. “I was raised in the food industry. My parents had luncheonettes around Manhattan which inspired me to study restaurants and hotels followed by catering and design. I wanted to be in the center and see everything come together,” Larry explains. Larry never wanted to follow the crowd. In fact, he says, “I always wanted to be different. My idea was to be the original—not the franchise that follows the original,” he explained. And so with the realization of Lawrence Scott Events, he compiled a long list of loyal A-listers who have continued to return to him year after year and run the gamut from entertainment to philanthropic.

MAKE IT EASY
Part of what sets Scott’s style apart is his innate understanding of his guests and making everyone feel included. “The challenge is staying current. I like to set the trends and lead and not worry about what others may think,” he explained. “We achieve that by being different. And as they say, timing is everything.” Perfect timing coupled with exacting choreography are what Larry’s signature moments are all about; it gives the party life and smiles and unforgettable memories!
BAR This should be the focal point. “I always build big bars. It is the community area of the party. It shouldn’t take two hours for people to feel comfortable and the bar accomplishes that immediately,” explains Larry.
When planning a party Larry Scott follows one rule: There are no rules. As a host or hostess, you must be confident in mixing it up, high and low; serve caviar and sliders at the same event. Use crystal chandeliers in a garden party; mix it up both when it comes to décor and food.
When it comes to holiday party planning Larry notes that “after the first of the year, people put the brakes on, but the end of the year is almost like the finish line—you always speed up.” He suggests skipping the grilled salmon with asparagus and going for the heartier, richer foods that are not only filling, but also put guests into the holiday spirit. “It’s a family time, an emotional time, a time for reminiscing.” White Christmas ©Gruber photographers
Thinking of hosting a holiday party in the comfort of your own home this year. If so, Larry does give the following tips to make your gatherings with family and friends both more enjoyable and relaxing.
FOOD Always make sure food is in abundance. Larry says, “Nobody wants to run out of food, and the leftovers can always be enjoyed during the next few days or put in the freezer. Give them great food, plenty during cocktail hour. They want tapas, baby mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes, maybe a little touch of tuna tartare on the table. Then give them one great, identifiable main course whether surf and turf, or veal chops.” SERVING Make a self-serve bar on the kitchen island. “Serve either family-style down the center of the table or set up a buffet. This way guests have choices and there is something even for the most discerning dinner guest,” says Larry. SEATING When arranging the seating for the evening, put the kids at the end of the table. “Entertaining families doesn’t always mean having to designate a kiddie table.” For those who prefer hiring Larry and his talented team, he offers customized events throughout the Tristate area and the East End. A TIME FOR CELEBRATION By Peter M. Kalellis
he New Year is a cause for celebration, for reliving and for looking back. One thing to be true is that a lot can happen in a year, and among the good, the bad, and the ugly, we have learned many lessons. As we say goodbye to 2019, let’s celebrate this holiday season in a spirit of joy and gratitude. No doubt about it, we may have many wishes swirling around, or we may feel so fragmented that we don’t know what we want. Why not take a personal inventory and number our desires, wants, and needs and decide on a plan to attain them? The key to finding who we are is to go through our day with awareness. What is the purpose and meaning of our life? Where are we going or where would we like to go? With focus and conscious attention to our daily life, we can take brief moments to self-awareness. In a few simple deep breaths, we can say, Lord, as you came into our world to share our lives, please come into this day and give us the daily bread. We hand over to you our anxieties and fears, asking you for direction.
A NEW SPIRIT Imagine how different this time of year would be if we let every handshake, hug, and smile be an opportunity—even for a few brief seconds—to give thanks to God for our new spirit. Lord, please fill our lives, our relationships, with faith, generosity, and love. You know the struggles we have gone through, let us be as compassionate, forgiving, and loving as you are. At the end of each day, we can be grateful for the miracle of life. We can awaken the best feelings in all people, and for that, we must take the chance to send a special message to all our loved ones and the people around us. Remember to share a little smile, a kind word, a genuine handshake with those in need.
As we say goodbye to 2019, let’s celebrate this holiday season in a spirit of joy and gratitude.
YOU’RE NEVER ALONE
HEALTH & HAPPINESS
This season also brings a mixed bag of emotions and memories. Whether you’ve just walked through the most significant year of your life, or are incredibly glad to see this one finally end, one truth still rings clear amidst it all. You are not alone. How grateful we feel as we think of His presence in our life. And though things and people around us shift and change, God’s love never changes. As glasses are raised, and colorful fireworks explode into the sky, it’s essential to recognize the unique symbolism this New Year’s holiday brings with it. A time of new beginnings and fresh start also comes with it a time of reflection and promises. Whether your resolutions consist of keeping your visits at the local gym or for better relationships with loved ones, it can make all the difference to put these hopes into words and warm wishes.
For a good start, enjoy this New Year’s Eve and each of the following days of 2020 in good health and happiness.

You and I can whisper a few words of “thank you” for all that we have in our lives. We can pray for His spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We can ask that he will guide our decisions and will open new doors. We can ask for God’s wisdom, strength, and power to make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. We can pray that He will keep us far from the snares and traps of temptations. May the fruits of God’s spirit be evident in our lives—his love, joy, peace, kindness, and gentleness. Amen. •

CIVANA WELLNESS RESORT & SPA TAKE HEALTH TO THE NEXT LEVEL By Roberta Sousa | Photography by Lisa Diederich Photography
orgeous. That’s the word that pops into my head as soon as I walk onto the property of CIVANA Wellness Resort & Spa, located in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert. Soothing and relaxing, it’s a wonderful way to rejuvenate away from the chilly winds of New York. CIVANA debuted in March 2018, as the first sustainable wellness resort to open in the Phoenix area of Carefree. It has done well: it was named as one of USA Today’s 10 Best Spas by its readers for being the best wellness retreat. Its unique approach to wellness is simple. Guests are encouraged to challenge themselves and to uncover their potential via four pillars: Movement, Spa, Nourishment, and Discovery. Each embodies an ethos of wellness through oneness: the sustainable interconnection of the individual, community, and natural environment.
A PERSONALIZED APPROACH Deliberately less structured than other destination wellness resorts, CIVANA offers each guest the flexibility to create the kind of experience that best suits them. Whether you’re a serious yogini who knows about every chakra or just curious about the world of wellness, CIVANA has something for you. Guests can choose from an extensive array of (complimentary) wellness-driven activities offered daily: guided hikes, tennis, pickle ball, access to nearby golf courses, indoor group cycle, and aerial yoga, to more esoteric options like sound bath sessions, intention burning, and introduction to crystals. There are Nourishment Workshops including Juicing 101, Shake and Stir Cocktail Classes, and meal planning which CIVANA knows something about. The resort has two healthful dining venues serving farm-to-table culinary creations. Terras, the resort’s signature restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner offers locally sourced produce, grass-fed meats, sustainable seafood and decadent desserts. Café Meto offers energy-boosting breakfast and lunch items with several gluten-free, grain-free, vegetarian, vegan, anti-inflammatory, and gut-friendly choices. 72 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
SOOTHING WATERS But the piece de resistance is its 22,000 square foot spa, which opened in December 2018. The spa focuses on the theme of healing through water and features 23 treatment areas, including one Watsu® therapy pool, two couple’s treatment rooms, three wet treatment rooms, five facial rooms, and 14 massage rooms. In the center of the spa is the Silent Sanctuary—a hydrotherapy circuit designed to help you focus on inner peace and outer balance. It is also home to the so-called Aqua Vitality Circuit, a communal area of hydrotherapy immersions that includes a European-designed hot/cold wading pool, a therapeutic soaking pool, and a cold deluge shower. This thermal experience, which takes about 30 minutes to complete, will help loosen your muscles and promote relaxation. There is an order to it: First, you take a shower. Next, take a warm soak in the vitality pool, followed by wading throughout the hot and cold walking pool. Pause in the dry Sanarium to balance yourself and find inspiration in the bracing cold deluge shower. You can then do it again, or simply chill in one of their lounges—tough choice. Davio’s interior
DAVIO’S NORTHERN ITALIAN STEAKHOUSE A PRIME MIDTOWN SPOT By Anne Raso
avio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse accomplishes the rare feat of equally excelling at serving prime, grass-fed meats as putting a modern spin on Northern Italian specialties. Portions are generous, and the wait staff is accommodating and friendly. Your dietary specifications/ preferences are always taken into consideration. Conveniently located just a stone’s throw from Grand Central at 441 Lexington Avenue, Davio’s is easy to access. The earth tone-hued dining room is modern and spacious, with some of the most “cushiony” chairs in New York and plenty of space between tables. Despite Davio’s size, the noise level is at a minimum, which diners prefer. Annise Hernandez-Scott was just recently named Executive Chef by owner/restauranteur Steve DiFillippo. She’s been with the restaurant since it first opened six years ago (the very first Davio’s opened in Boston’s Back Bay in 1985). The young Hernandez-Scott cut her teeth in the kitchens of the legendary Five Star Diamond Award-winning Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, followed by stints at The Plaza and other notable NYC hotels.
KITCHEN TLC
New York Lifestyles recently visited Davio’s and had the pleasure of not only dining there but also meeting Hernandez-Scott in person. She is about the youngest-looking executive chef in NYC, and we jokingly asked if she was about 19—but in all seriousness, she knew she wanted a career in the culinary arts since she was in grade school. We pointed out that we not only admired the quality and care put into her dishes but the fact that she has mastered both Northern Italian and classic steakhouse fare. She humbly pointed out that she doesn’t do it alone. HernandezScott enthused, “I love being in the kitchen with a great group of chefs beside me, and the team at Davio’s is more than I could hope for.” Admirably, Hernandez-Scott is very hands-on in selecting meat, fish, and produce. She explained to NYL: “We get all our fish from Foley Fish out of Boston, and our beef comes from Brandt Beef in California. Quality is so important not only to me but everyone in the Davio’s kitchens.” 74 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
We wondered what are the challenges as well as the rewards of working for a major New York steakhouse. The affable executive chef answered, “One of the challenges is keeping up with all the crazy food trends, but we manage to stay true to our roots while evolving with the industry at the same time.” She added with a smile, “The way I see it, there is much more to love at a Northern Italian Steakhouse! Northern Italian fare focuses on heavier and richer cuisine. Our steakhouse offers handmade pasta, made from scratch daily. At Davio’s we want everyone to feel like family, so we are very conscious of our guests’ potential dietary restrictions. We offer a gluten-free menu, almost always have a vegan entree, and our staff is highly trained to accommodate most guest allergies.” So just who is the typical Davio’s clientele? (We had to ask if there have been any celebs lately!) Chef Hernandez-Scott answered, “We serve everyone from CEOs to United Nations Ambassadors to pro athletes to families with children in tow.” Davio’s strives to offer the same hospitality whether it’s a dinner for two or business event. Hernandez-Scott has nearly no time to mingle with these notables or any guest for that matter, which seems to be her only regret while helming the extra-large Davio’s kitchen. She states, “I am usually so busy with my team in the kitchen that I don’t get to greet guests in the dining room very often. Luckily, we have a beautiful open kitchen, so I still always feel the energy of our guests. We also participate in many charity tasting events throughout the year, and I like to take the opportunity then to talk to our guests as much as possible! I love getting feedback, and I find that many people are pleasantly surprised by our wide variety of menu offerings. The dessert cart is always a big hit as well!”

A STEAK MASTER’S SECRET
Davio’s Bolognese Chef Hernandez-Scott
Davio’s most popular dishes, according to Hernandez-Scott, are “our Tagliatelle Bolognese, Kobe Meatballs—and of course, a juicy Ribeye never disappoints!” Speaking of Ribeyes, the talented chef gave us the secret to cooking a perfect steak: “The beautiful thing about steak is that it’s naturally delicious. The key is not to touch it too much. You cook it on one side, turn it over once and finish it in a hot oven. You should literally touch it once.” If you visit Davio’s, you will be drawn in by the aforementioned attributes, including a considerable diversity of menu items that cover everyone from prime beef connoisseurs to pasta maniacs. We adored our perfectly cooked steaks, and we would argue that it would be impossible to find a finer 14-ounce New York strip anywhere else in town, but there are little dishes that fly under the radar that are genuinely unique. A great case in point would be the remarkable Artichoke Alla Romana appetizer, which is four hearts with melted Gruyere and Parmigiano and finishes with a lemony kick. The Tuna Tartare appetizer with Avocado, Meyer Lemon, Harissa, and Davio’s pasta chips is a “fan favorite” as well. Hernandez-Scott sums up the restaurant’s diverse appeal: “Davio’s is a white tablecloth establishment that embodies modern sophistication. We are the perfect restaurant for a business lunch to an evening cocktail tasting or private dining event. We especially love the holiday season, and our decor this time of year is especially festive, giving the ambiance an extra layer of warm, inviting elegance. This reflects in our cooking, especially through the seasonal menu items, which are diligently planned by our fantastic culinary team. We switch up everything from entrees to desserts and even curated seasonal cocktails—so there’s always something extra special awaiting the arrival of our next guest.” Like at any great steakhouse or Italian eatery, Davio’s has a remarkable wine list, and the servers are extra-knowledgeable on wine pairings for each course. The staff believes in “big finishes” and every meal ends with an old-fashioned rolling dessert cart that will tug at your heartstrings even if you cannot partake of the gooey goodness on it! BLUEBIRD LONDON FINE DINING WITH A BRIT TWIST By Kristie Kellahan
hen Bluebird London opened in New York City a year ago at Columbus Circle, expectations were high for the Brit-influenced bar and restaurant. With the DNA of its UK namesake venue—Bluebird London has been a favorite of Chelsea’s fashionable set for more than two decades—and picture-perfect views of the southwest corner of Central Park, it has caught the attention of city diners. What came next would challenge most restaurateurs. Harsh reviews in the New York Times and Eater NY criticized the food, reinforcing stereotypes of Britain as a culinary meh-land. So it’s good to see the team at D&D London (owner/operators of Bluebird London and Queensyard at Hudson Yards, as well as dozens of restaurants in the UK) took the criticism square on the chin, rolled their sleeves up and revamped the menu. A year on, the venue has found its feet and has a new confidence. Located in a 10,500-square-foot cavernous space on the third floor of The Shops at Columbus Circle (adjacent to David Chang’s bang bar and noodle shop), you could call Bluebird London three venues in one: Upscale restaurant, relaxed bistro, gin-lover’s bar. 76 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
AN UPDATED MENU The fine dining restaurant—the one with those park views—is a place you could bring a date you wanted to impress, or your visiting-from-out-of-town parents. With its chic interior design and extensive wine list, it’s also a solid choice for expense-account business meetings. The menu is seasonal, with a changing roster of specials dictated by availability of freshest produce. On the advice of our waiter, we tasted a light-as-a-feather Cornish Crab dish with Chilled Shrimp Consommé, and a deliciously buttery Banana Tarte Tatin with Earl Grey Ice Cream for dessert. Both were recent additions to the menu. The Branzino with Portavogie Prawns, Sea Beans and Mustard Veloute delivered a satisfying textural and taste combination. Many will come for the Brit-centric classic dishes that are always on the menu: the Fish & Chips with Minted Peas, Berkshire Pork Loin and Sticky Toffee Pudding are all popular. For a hearty Fall/ Winter dinner, the Beef Wellington with Horseradish Potatoes and Sauce Bourguignonne is rich, though diners might want to keep in mind the meat is served medium-rare inside the pastry shell. If your tastes run more to the well-done, order instead the 8 oz. Prime Filet Steak with Bearnaise Sauce. In the relaxed bistro and bar space, Bluebird London has found a reliable audience in locals and those who work in the area around Columbus Circle. With the closure of Landmarc in July, many were looking for an after-work spot to enjoy happy hour drinks and comfort food favorites in an elegant, grown-up environment. They’ll find it here, with a menu that features affordable bites— Cilantro & Lime Fried Chicken, Crispy Lobster & Avocado, and British Cheese & Charcuterie each run under $20—and craveworthy dishes to order after a few rounds of cocktails. We’re looking at you, Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich.
A CLASSIC G&T MENU One thing we know we can always rely on the Brits for is an extensive commitment to gin. Here, Bluebird London does not disappoint, with a dedicated Gin & Tonic menu. The Botanist features Fever Tree elderflower tonic, lemon, thyme, rosemary and juniper, while Are You Curious packs a citrus punch with blood orange and juniper mixed with a classic G&T. Drink your way through all six cocktails on the gin list, and you’ll definitely be ordering the Parmesan Truffle Fries. For more information on Bluebird London, visit bluebirdlondon.nyc. •

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
ON STAGE
PHILIP EDWARD FISHER By Bailey Beckett
hilip Edward Fisher, one of the world’s most accomplished classical pianists, is unusually modest for a musician of his talent. And practical. “I believe that you have to broaden your horizons and challenge yourself to grow as an artist,” says the Julliard-trained performer, who splits his time between New York and native England. “I also feel the traditional labels of classical and pop are becoming more and more obsolete: There is good and bad music, regardless of genre. As long as you love what you choose to play, you can’t go wrong!” And he hasn’t, as evidenced by his stellar career. The soloist has performed on stages everywhere from his beloved UK to Italy, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, Norway, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Japan, Ukraine and the U.S., and with the most prestigious orchestras: the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Tampere Philharmonic, and symphonies in San Antonio Symphony, Albany and Toledo, among others. He has also released three albums, including his most recent Piano Works by The Mighty Handful, which earned international acclaim and was shortlisted in the Best Solo Album category of the International Classical Music Awards. Fisher spoke with New York Lifestyles about his career, performance style, and what makes New York such a magnet for musicians of his caliber. What’s your latest project? I’m currently in the process of recording Piano Concerto and complete works for solo piano for the Naxos label with the Albany Symphony and conductor David Alan Miller this past June the day after performing it on their American Music Festival. I am now working on recording the solo works. This will be the first of its kind—no one has recorded all of composer John Corigliano’s piano works before, and to play a part like this in the legacy of one of America’s preeminent composers is a huge honor for me. I’ve known John for more than ten years, but we have become particularly close through this project. His work has always fascinated me. He, of course, had tremendous commercial success through winning an Oscar for his soundtrack to the movie The Red Violin. Still, his writing is steeped in the tradition and legacy of the great composers throughout history. He has straddled those two worlds effortlessly without ever compromising the unique voice that has set him apart, and I have huge admiration for that. 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
How can you keep classical music relevant today? I believe that it will always remain relevant by its inherent importance and immense impact on the shaping of our culture across centuries. Much of it is down to the way it is presented and also the responsibility we have as artists and performers to always evolve and become more and more connected to our audiences, not just on stage. The label of classical music should be presented for what it is: great music and artistry that is supposed to take us out of our daily lives and challenge and move us. I’m also heartened by the multitude of new music series across the country that showcase both established and up and coming contemporary composers. This presents it as a living, breathing art form, not just something of the past to look back on. Ultimately, if we allow the music to speak for itself, without any of the expectations or constraints of specific labels, it can’t fail to have an impact and remain relevant! How often do you perform/tour? It’s on a rolling basis in a sense. I have concerts booked a year ahead, but I also have a very fluid situation where I am picking up engagements close-in. I can have a month that is nonstop, followed by one that is very quiet. If I’m not performing or recording, I’m concentrating on preparing for upcoming engagements or creating new projects. I find that it’s what one does with that downtime in terms of productivity and learning new repertoire that is the biggest challenge! What is unique about New York for a performer? I would say the thing that stands out is the incredible diversity of projects and events a performer can get involved in. Recently, I went from playing a Beethoven Piano Quartet at Carnegie Hall on Wednesday to a collaboration with an Armenian dance ensemble just across the Hudson River in New Jersey on Saturday, and finishing up playing Tango-inspired chamber works on Long Island the following Sunday! What are your favorite pieces and composers? I’ve always had an affinity for the composer/pianists of the romantic tradition, such as Liszt, Rachmaninov, etc. I will always have a special connection with the 3rd Piano Concerto by Rachmaninov when it comes to my life in New York. It was the work with which I won the concerto competition at Juilliard that led to my New York debut at Alice Tully Hall with the Juilliard Symphony. However, I feel that my favorites can be different from season to season, or even day to day. I was lucky to have the experience of performing all 32 of Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas across 11 concerts at Bargemusic in Brooklyn last year, after which I played with the San Antonio Symphony as well as the Triple Concerto in Argentina. So, yes, Beethoven was particularly important to me that season. Tell us about your early training? I started out studying piano with my father when I was about nine years old and was performing in public after a year or so. My more formal training started at the Purcell School in London, followed by the Royal Academy of Music before coming to New York for graduate studies at the Juilliard School. Since then, my training has all been on stage in a sense. I feel that I’m always learning how to be a better musician and performer, not least from the wonderful colleagues I get to collaborate with! Who are your inspirations? Almost too many to mention, but anyone from the great pianists I listened to growing up—Richter, Michelangeli, Pogorelich—to artists in the more popular realm. It’s hard to go wrong listening to Sinatra, for example. I’ve always felt that it is often the case that a performer who hasn’t been molded in that classical tradition can have an intrinsic and intuitive understanding of how to connect with and move an audience. I admire those artists that took risks—the guitarist and singer Peter Green of the early days of Fleetwood Mac, or Bowie, to name just a couple of them. OSCAR CONTENDERS FLOOD THE THEATERS By Jenny Peters
ADVENTURE CANDIDATES 1917 Rated: R British director Sam Mendes took home the Best Director Oscar for American Beauty way back in 2000; he’s also known for Skyfall and The Road to Perdition. Now the talented auteur tackles World War I with 1917, an epic drama-adventure that follows two young British soldiers (George McKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) as they attempt a daring mission behind enemy lines. Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong, Richard Madden and Oscar winner Colin Firth co-star. STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Not yet rated The final chapter of the Star Wars saga, which George Lucas created back in 1977 (and won six Academy Awards for that first film), is helmed by J. J. Abrams and brings back Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and John Boyega as Resistance fighters. And of course, no Star Wars adventure would be complete without its villains, so Adam Driver returns as Kylo Ren. Other wellknown faces are found in the universe, too, like Billie Lourd (the late Carrie Fisher’s daughter), Lupita Nyong’o and Keri Russell. THE AERONAUTS Rated: PG-13 Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne reunites with Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (their The Theory of Everything collaboration garnered five nominations, including his win) in this exhilarating action tale about two pioneering balloonists who fight the elements in their search for the ultimate high. Set in 1862, long before airplanes were invented, the film is a heady exploration of intrepid adventurers who push human possibilities to the limit.
BIOGRAPHIC CHALLENGERS BOMBSHELL Not yet rated The powerhouse trio of Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie take the leads in this real-life tale of the women who took down power broker Roger Ailes. As the head of Fox Television News, Ailes used his position to force his sexual agenda on his female news reporters; this searing tale is a strong contender for Best Picture and a cautionary tale, too. John Lithgow takes on Ailes in a creepy performance likely to finally win him his Oscar (he’s been nominated twice before). 80 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
RICHARD JEWELL Not yet rated Four-time Oscar winner Clint Eastwood is at the helm of this fact-based story that centers on the 1996 bombing at the Atlanta Olympics. Paul Walter Houston stars as Richard Jewell, the security guard whose actions saved countless lives, but was then falsely accused of being a terrorist. This cautionary tale also stars Oscar winners Sam Rockwell and Kathy Bates, along with Jon Hamm and Olivia Wilde. SEBERG Rated: R Jean Seberg was a luminously beautiful American actress, best known for her films Breathless, Paint Your Wagon and Lilith. She was also known for her radical politics in the late 1960s and for her tempestuous personal life. Jean Seberg is one of Hollywood’s tragedies, a woman whose life spiraled out of control while the world watched. In this biopic, Kristen Stewart takes on her life—and death—in a role that just might bring her first Academy Award nomination.
DRAMATIC FRONT RUNNERS JUST MERCY Rated: PG-13 Oscar winners Brie Larson and Jamie Foxx star alongside Michael B. Jordan in this legal drama that delves deep into the U.S. prison system. This factbased story follows a young Black American lawyer’s attempts to save an African-American man from deathrow execution; it’s an intense look at the inequalities and racism inherent in the American justice system. LITTLE WOMEN Rated: PG Greta Gerwig, the actress turned Oscar-nominated director and screenwriter (Lady Bird), follows up that project with one straight from her heart. Little Women is her take on the oft-told cinematic tale of the March sisters, Louisa May Alcott’s story of a family of women coping with the changes in America just after the Civil War. Her all-star cast includes Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen as the four sisters; and Oscar winners Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Chris Cooper add to the pedigree of this much-loved, emotional family saga. • HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 81

DOING IT ONE MORE TIME LIVE COMEDY SPECIAL: ALL IN THE FAMILY & GOOD TIMES ABC With the first Live in Front of a Studio Audience show winning the 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special, it’s no surprise that producers Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel are doing it again. This time there will be another All in the Family episode (presumably starring Woody Harrelson and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei as Archie and Edith), along with a Good Times show. Done live, there’s always the chance for added comedy, like when Jamie Foxx (as George Jefferson) completely forgot his lines in the first show. LOST IN SPACE Netflix Sci-fi favorite Lost in Space, initially shown in 1965, is back, filled with cool special effects (which was not the case in the original!), the Robinson family, and, of course, their trusty robot. If you don’t remember, the family’s space ship crashes on an alien planet, stranding them “in space.” This time out, Molly Parker (Deadwood) and Toby Stephens star as the parents, whose primary goal is to protect their kids from the dangers on the unknown planet. THE L WORD: GENERATION Q Showtime This reboot of the groundbreaking lesbian drama that aired from 2004 to 2009 brings back Jennifer Beals, Katherine Moennig and Leisha Hailey in their original roles. It also adds a slew of new, young characters as they tell the story of how things have changed (and stayed the same, too) in our world over the last ten years. Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, Leo Sheng, and Adrienne Mandi co-star.
LAUGH, CRY AND AVOID GETTING BITTEN IN THE LONG RUN Starz Idris Elba created and stars in this family comedy-drama based on his own childhood experience back in London in the 1980s. He plays a working-class dad whose household is disrupted when his younger brother moves in and immediately becomes a terrible influence on his children. You’ll barely recognize Elba with his Afro! 82 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
THE MOODYS Fox The Moodys is a three-day comedy event, the story of a dysfunctional family led by Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins as they try to navigate the holiday season. Beginning on December 4th and followed the next week on December 9th and 10th, it’s set in Chicago at Christmas, as the more-than-a-little eccentric Moody family gets together to celebrate. It isn’t pretty, but it is funny. TRUTH BE TOLD Apple TV+ Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer stars in this murder mystery opposite Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul. She runs a true-crime podcast, and he’s the man she helps put into prison, but is he guilty? This drama explores the new phenomenon of podcasts in America that is affecting the course of justice as they investigate real crimes. V WARS Netflix Ian Somerhalder of The Vampire Diaries fame returns to the world of human bloodsuckers in this new horror series. He’s a doctor trying to stop a strange disease from spreading, for as people are infected, they become vampires and (naturally) then begin to bite and infect others. It’s an oft-told story with a twist—and a perfect replacement for those missing Somerhalder’s last bloody series.
DON’T MISS DOCUMENTARY THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING Starz This important documentary focuses on the traditional marginalization of women in the media, a subject that Geena Davis and her foundation have been studying for over ten years. As she maps out here, gender discrimination in TV and film is rampant and insidious; happily, she also points out the ways that things are changing as we enter the 2020s. She’s joined by Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Taraji P. Henson, Reese Witherspoon, and a host of other successful women in this fascinating look at where we’ve been and where we are headed as a society. • HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 83

Living Room After
ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER GALE SITOMER By Harry Brads
iving in New York City, residents are familiar with trying to get the most out of tiny spaces. Whether renting or owning an apartment in one of the world’s most densely populated cities, square footage comes at a cost.
Ask Interior Designer Gale Sitomer, and she’ll tell you that living here requires a creative set of skills. Home décor is an art, requiring expert spacing abilities, smart storage solutions, and multi-purpose layouts. Sitomer lends her expertise on maximizing your small spaces, or at least giving the illusion that it is, indeed, substantial. Gale says, “There might not be a way to make your ceilings marblecoated and 16 feet high, but there is a way to let more light in and to capitalize on the space you have. Gale Sitomer ©Gale Sitomer
IN THE BEGINNING
After a successful career in fashion and event production, Sitomer discovered her passion and talent for interior design while supervising the design and construction details of her residences and workplace. Her passion has continued to this day. Her involvement in every aspect of the projects, plus the care she takes with each client, has differentiated Sitomer’s work from others in the business. Her goal has always been to create an environment that her clients feel comfortable and love. Today, Sitomer is accomplished in both residential and commercial projects. Gale Sitomer Interior Design focuses on timeless design, balancing subtle color, comfort, and functionality. Space planning, architectural elements, and lighting are as integral to the process as furniture, fabric, and color. Whether meeting the demands of a New York City retail boutique, commercial showroom space, a city apartment or townhouse—even a beachfront retreat—service to her clients is as consistent as their endorsement of her work. She stresses that “just because your space is small does not mean you have to have small furniture. Using larger pieces, like an oversized rug or couch, will make your space feel larger.” She also added, “Of course, the caveat here is that everything has to fit. An oversized couch plus an oversized coffee table, and an oversized chair just isn’t going to work. You have to work with the floor plan and space you have.

TRANSFORMING YOUR SPACE
The talented interior designer knows what it’s like to live in New York City. She shared some of her to tried-and-true expertise with New York Lifestyles when converting your home or office into a livable place. Lighten Up Sitomer believes lighting is truly the key to playing with the appearance of size. “Having both overhead lighting using ceiling fixtures in addition to ambient lighting with lamps is a great way to highlight a space,” she says. “You can also install dimmers to control mood and amount of light, so it works with any occasion.” Keep It Tidy Clutter and mess make space feel tight and constricted. “Many of our clients collect various knickknacks throughout their travels, but having all of them on display looks busy and takes away from the space and the design,” she explains. To make a room look and feel more organized, she encourages them to select a few of the most important items they have and showcase them.

White Is Bright Lighter colors are a good trick for keeping spaces looking open and airy. But Sitomer stresses light-colored ceilings are the key. “Keep your ceiling a lighter shade of white rather than painting it a deeper,” she recommends. “Dark ceilings make the ceiling appear lower, and therefore, the room looks smaller. Some shades can also look flat or dingy, depending on the undertones.” One of her favorite colors is Benjamin Moore’s Moonlight White. It has just enough depth to make an impact while still reading as very bright. If you are renting, some landlords panic at the mere mention of paint. However, if you’re currently stuck with dark walls, she recommends opening up the conversation with your landlord— especially if you plan on staying a while. Be sure to stress that you’ll be painting the apartment a neutral color. She also notes to have samples of the new shade to share! “If they won’t budge, cover those dark indigo walls with temporary wallpaper in a light hue. And if that’s still a stretch, work in furniture or accessories in a light color.” Wall Décor “When trying to make your space appear larger, think of mirrors and artwork,” Sitomer says. Mirrors in hallways and bedrooms will give the space the impression of depth and dimension, and artwork with vertical patterns will make the ceilings seem higher and the room more spacious. Focal Drapery “For most projects, I use a neutral palette with dashes of color—understated and chic,” notes Sitomer. “For dashes of color, I favor utilizing patterned drapery to accent my neutral base. Decorative curtains give rooms more depth and, in a sense, become the room’s “artwork” as the fabrics pop from the otherwise pale canvas.” For more information on Gale Sitomer Interior Design, visit gsitomerdesign.com. • HOLIDAY EDITION | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 87

DO Cook Book
MY NEW YORK STORY KRISTEN TOMLAN By AP Connolly
emember when your mom told you not to eat that raw cookie dough? Well, times have changed thanks to Kristen Tomlan of DŌ, Cookie Dough Confections, who perfected a safe-toeat cookie dough, thanks to a substitute pasteurized egg product. How times have changed. Since launching several years ago, Kristen has moved to a new baking space, hired a full team, and business has never been better. DŌ also has a popular Instagram account (@cookiedonyc) that has tongues wagging all over New York City and beyond. Add to that, Kristen has authored Hello, Cookie Dough: 110 Doughlicious Confections To Eat, Bake & Share which came out this fall. Kristen recently invited us to see her in action and to find out more about the woman behind the dough. Tell us a little bit about yourself! Where did you grow up? I’m originally from the Midwest—I grew up in a family of four kids in the suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. After high school, I moved to Cincinnati to pursue a design degree at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Art, Architecture & Planning (DAAP). From there, I went on to live in New York City to work for a global brand strategy and design consultant before I started DŌ! Was cooking/baking always in your DNA? Who or what is your biggest inspiration? Growing up with three siblings in St. Louis, I always found an escape in the kitchen baking alongside my mom who is a cookbook author herself. I often satisfied my sweet tooth by creating sugary treats to share with family and friends. Even through college, I became the resident baker, always crafting new creations in the kitchen. 88 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
Kristen Tomlan
Tell us the biggest challenge you’ve faced, personally or professionally? There’s been a handful of challenges over the years! The most significant was when I was diagnosed with a life-threatening condition called Stevens-Johnson syndrome in 2014. I was hospitalized for 21 days. It changed my outlook on life and ultimately pushed me to start my own company. Today, running a business every day has become a new challenge! One of the biggest blessings and challenges since opening the shop has been the demand for DŌ! We could barely keep up! We had to figure out how to organize the line outside in the best way as to not disturb our neighbors but still keep order. We hired more employees to help ensure that we could make enough cookie dough to satisfy the demand of our customers and also assigned individual employees to be line managers to help keep the process running smoothly. I think with all challenges, it’s about confronting them with perseverance, hard work, and determination. If you could go back a decade, what advice would you give yourself? I would tell myself not to sweat the small stuff. I’m very much type A, and when I was younger, everything had to be perfect. Since I’ve started my business, I’ve learned that I can’t control everything and have to be innovative and adaptable with the good, the bad, and the ugly! What are some learning experiences that helped shape you/your company? I think the best learning experiences have come from mistakes. Each one provides a learning opportunity and the ability to evolve as a business owner, friend, etc. What was your “ah-ha” moment when you knew DŌ would become a reality? I have always loved cookie dough, but my light bulb moment was when I was out with my friends in Philadelphia. We went to this cute cookie shop and decided to forego the fresh cookies and buy some of their unbaked cookie dough. We then sat in our car, passing around a tub of cookie dough, and I thought, why is this not a thing? Why can’t I go into a store and order cookie dough without feeling bad about it or worrying that I would get sick from it? Then the idea for DŌ was born. How does Kristen Tomlan relax? I typically work out first thing in the morning to help manage stress (The Class by Taryn Toomey is my favorite weekly ritual), and I pour myself a margarita at the end of the day! How many flavors do you now have at DŌ and what’s on the menu for the holidays? We have 20 flavors that include fan favorites like the Signature Chocolate Chip, Brookie Dough and Cake Batter. My personal favorite is Heavenly. We also feature a variety of gluten-free and vegan flavors too! We have a seasonal flavor that changes monthly, and then for holidays, we always introduce a few more! Finally, some good advice to budding entrepreneurs in NYC. Tell us your best career advice. Follow your passion. It is that simple. Go after your dreams and listen to your gut.

THE PIERRE
A NEW YORK MASTERPIECE TURNS 90 By Bailey Beckett
here are landmarks like The Met, the New York Public Library, and the Empire State and Chrysler buildings, and then there is The Pierre, a cherished institution that has been part of the city’s history for almost a century. Almost. The legendary building is celebrating its 90th year as one of the world’s most famous hotels and the most exclusive residential address on 5th Avenue (well hello, Central Park!) To celebrate, the hotel has opened The Pierre Stories Gallery, a space in its lobby exhibiting a treasure trove of its archives: timeless photos, memorabilia, videos, old menus from French Chef Auguste Escoffier, who led the opening culinary team in 1930. There are even hotel bills from the past 90 years (a room cost less than a modern-day martini!). The gallery, explains the hotel’s general manager François-Olivier Luiggi, is “a curated collection that traces each decade of our history and gives both guests and visitors a chance to rediscover what has made The Pierre such a beloved icon.”
CELEBRITY ELITE What other hotel can boast a registry that includes Coco Chanel, Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Yves St. Lauren? Or been home to Bvglari’s first U.S. store? The Pierre (don’t forget The, please!) is not only part of the city’s fabric, but it’s forever seared into pop culture. Remember the dance? Al Pacino and Gabrielle Anwar doing the tango in Scent of a Woman. It happened here. The hotel’s grandeur has been alive and present since its first brick was laid. Its founder, Charles Pierre Casalasco, paid $15 million (money raised from names like Hutton, Chrysler, Gerry) to buy the land and pay for construction in the late 1920s, which was an astronomical sum then but pennies today considering there are apartments in the building that cost ten times that. His goal? To build a “majestic monument to simplicity, beauty, and refinement,” said Luiggi. He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Today, The Pierre is among a handful of hotels in New York to achieve both a five-star and fivediamond rating. Billionaire glass towers have not obstructed its place in the New York skyline, and its waiting list for weddings is still two years long. With 189 rooms (49 of them suites), the hotel still attracts the world’s elite, who come for fawning service and, yes, the whitegloved elevator operators, which has been a tradition at the hotel since its opening. Want a haircut in the middle of the night (à la the late singer Prince)? It’s no problem for the Les Clefs d’Or Concierge team, who cater to every whimsy or demand. 90 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
EUROPEAN CHARM Even cabbies know where to go. In the classic 1990 film Joe vs. The Volcano, Tom Hanks hops into a taxi and asks to go to The Plaza. The driver turns his head and says no, he’s gotta go to The Pierre (no offense to The Plaza!). The hotel has been featured in dozens of movies and TV shows since, including Oceans 8 and The First Wives Club. Glamour has always been part of The Pierre’s attraction as well. Why else would Yves St. Laurent choose it to debut his first U.S. collection? Valentino carried on the tradition, bringing his entire staff to the hotel for New York showings. Its international allure—The Pierre staff speaks a combined 35 languages—is also part of its charm. Now owned by the India-based Taj Hotels (they took over from the Four Seasons in 2005 and invested $35 million in an impeccable renovation), the hotel still exudes European charm with brassy New York influences. Its circular, twolevel Rotunda is like a Renaissance painting come to life, with frescos that feature Jackie O, Elizabeth Taylor and, hilariously, CHIPS actor Erik Estrada. Notwithstanding, it’s the perfect setting for afternoon tea, brunch, or a romantic meal. Or a wedding dance. The hotel has hosted thousands of them throughout its history.
Two E Cabaret Setup
ENTERTAINING IDEAS Dining, too, has been at the forefront of The Pierre since it opened its doors (though Prohibition started that very day, interestingly). Today, visitors and neighbors can enjoy tea and cocktails in the Two E Bar/ Lounge off its lobby, which is great for celebrity sightings as well as cabaret: Broadway at the Pierre and Icons of Jazz are among the entertainment options. Fine dining is sublime at its signature restaurant, Perrine, featuring unusual but delicious entrees like burger salads and tomato and cheese tarts. Co-existing with the hotel are 75 private apartments, which are among the most expensive and coveted in the world (and which has the toughest co-op board known for its discernment). Among the lot is an 11,000, three-level penthouse at the top featuring five bedrooms, four terraces, a paneled library, a wine cellar, a black Belgian-marble staircase, and the hotel’s former ballroom with 23-foot high ceilings. Featured as Anthony Hopkins home in the movie Meet Joe Black, it is one of the most expensive homes in America at $100 million. 1990s Scent of A Woman

TIME OUT WITH... SANTA CLAUS By Griffin Miller
atching up with Kris Kringle is tricky this time of year. So many lists to check twice, so many fans to greet at Macy’s Santaland at Herald Square. Fortunately, the man of the hour found time for a very merry interview with New York Lifestyles. He really is the best! You’re a busy dude, Mr. Claus… Call me, Santa. Wow, thank you, sir. It’s what the kids call me, you know. You did, too, when you were little. That’s right, I did! Okay, Santa. As I was saying, this is pedal-to-metal time for you, jetting back and forth between Macy’s Herald Square and the North Pole. I Skype. Really? Of course not… I’m magic! Ah hah! I think you meant Ho, Ho, Ho. I did, Santa, thanks! You were saying… While I need to be checking out how things are going at the North Pole, I need to be here, too, listening to everyone’s Christmas wishes. Well, it certainly is gorgeous in Santaland. I know. The pine trees glitter, the mountains are topped with snow, the lights are fantastic… and everywhere you look, you see elves and kids of all ages. Even grownups? Ah, ah, ah… tall kids! But how do you see so many people, Santa? Magic happens. Can you be more specific? I rely on my wonderful elves who work their own magic. Many people don’t realize that Santa is also an elf—a jolly old elf. So with the elves helping out, that frees you up. Yes, to listen to the wants, the hopes, and the joys of kids and their families. 96 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | HOLIDAY EDITION
But Santa, not all children and their families who visit you here come from New York. Not to worry. On Christmas Eve, I magically travel everywhere with my team of hearty reindeer. That’s a lot of miles to cover, even magically. Don’t the reindeer get hungry? And what do they eat? Thank you for asking. As you know, many people are kind enough to leave cookies and milk out for me. But it’s extra nice when they remember to also leave some carrots for the reindeer. It’s no easy job carrying all those toys everywhere in a fancy sleigh. Speaking of cookies, do you have a favorite? I can’t say I do! Whatever you decide to leave me is automatically my favorite. More magic? Of course. Even with all those cookies to keep you going, you must be exhausted at the end of the night. Well, officially, I only work one night a year, so I have 364 days of stored up energy to tap into. I recently found out that approximately 200,000 people visit you each year in Santaland. Does that surprise you? Not at all! And it’s my privilege to give everyone who comes to see me their special moment. Every little kid—and tall kid, too—is unique, and I always love hearing what they want for Christmas, or just what’s on their mind. Thanks so much, Santa, and FYI, I can use a new laptop if it’s not too much trouble.
