New York Lifestyles Magazine Holiday Special Edition Nov/Dec 2024
Happenings
RING IN 2025 WITH A NO-KILL NATION FOCUS
I can’t believe 2025 is here. And you know what that means; Best Friends Animal Society’s No-Kill Nation goal is the theme of the year for anyone in the animal advocacy and rescue communities. That includes Pet Lifestyles Magazine.
Just a year ago, I agreed to re-launch Pet Lifestyles Magazine with one specific caveat—unlike the prior iteration of the publication, we needed to have a consistent and very specific focus to support the animal welfare and rescue communities. Yes, PLM had done stories on rescue before and, yes, the magazine had done adoption stories before. But there was never a dedicated issue to promoting the community nor was there any semblance of regular promotion of rescues and shelters.
That re-launch was with the first ever Adoption Edition, featuring our packmate, Best Friends Animal Society CEO Julie Castle, on the cover. And it has been a wild ride ever since.
You’ve undoubtedly read in our pages, seen and heard on our The Weekly Paw podcast, about Best Friends’ goal of a No-Kill Nation by 2025. And if you haven’t, then you will appreciate that we are dedicating every issue in 2025 to Best Friends Animal Society and the ambitious, yet achievable, goal that Julie Castle set for our nation in 2016.
Each issue in 2025 will have a specific section dedicated to Best Friends Animal Society as well as stories about the No-Kill Nation goal, and ways you can help your community achieve this long overdue milestone in our animal rights history as a country.
From everyone at Pet Lifestyles Magazine, our sponsors and advertisers, we wish you and your family (both two and four-legged members!) a very Happy and Healthy Holiday Season.
Stay pawesome!

THE GIFT OF GIVING
AN ALTERNATIVE TO TRADITIONAL PRESENTS
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
That most wonderful time of year is upon us. No, I am not referring to Christmas Day. I am referring to that most wonderful time for charities when people across the globe give their hard-earned money to help with whatever the mission they are supporting. Aptly named Giving Tuesday, the largest single non-profit donation day of the year falls after right Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Yes, it is hard to believe that over three billion dollars will be donated to help organizations across the globe on this single day; especially after seeing the endless images of people climbing all over each other, often getting into fights, to get to the best Black Friday deals. That is why this year we have decided to put together a list of organizations that we work with whom we know are responsible and will use your donations for their mission statements rather than at a high administrative cost.
You can either donate to these organizations for their Giving Tuesday initiatives, or you can make a donation in someone else’s name as a gift to give them this holiday season. Sometimes the best gift you can give someone during the holiday season is the gift of giving. This is especially true for those Secret Santa gifts we all have challenges shopping for!
GREY2KUSA
Formed in 2001, GREY2K USA Worldwide is the largest greyhound protection organization in the world. As a non-profit entity, we work to pass stronger greyhound protection laws and end the cruelty of dog racing on both national and international levels. We also promote the rescue and adoption of greyhounds across the globe. Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane and should be prohibited. GREY2K USA was the first organization to successfully outlaw dog racing using the ballot initiative process. In November 2008, the citizens of Massachusetts chose compassion over cruelty and voted 56%44% to close Raynham and Wonderland Greyhound Parks. On November 6, 2018, Floridians voted 69% - 31% to phase out dog racing in the Sunshine State, ordering the closure of twelve historic tracks.
Since their formation, dozens of American dog tracks have closed for live racing, and dog racing is now illegal in 43 states. We also engage all around the globe to end the cruelty of commercial dog racing in the five other jurisdictions where it currently exists and have blocked the introduction of greyhound gambling to countries such as South Africa, Jamaica and the Philippines. THE STAR OF 34 TH STREET
THE MAKING OF MODERN MAGIC
By Patricia Canole | Photographs Courtesy of Macy’s
Macy’s, one of American history’s most iconic department stores, has been a significant force in the retail industry for well over a century. From its early beginnings as a modest dry goods store in New York City, Macy’s has expanded into a nationwide retail giant. It is best known today for its flagship location in Herald Square and the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. As the parade celebrates its 98th year, it stands as a festive symbol of the holiday season and a reflection of Macy’s enduring legacy.
THE FOUNDING OF MACY’S
Macy’s was founded by Rowland Hussey Macy in 1858. Macy, who had been involved in retail and whaling before establishing his store, opened R.H. Macy & Co. as a dry goods business at the corner of 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City. From the outset, Macy implemented innovative marketing techniques that distinguished his store from competitors. He introduced the concept of fixed prices—a rarity when haggling was common. Macy’s also embraced newspaper advertisements, a new strategy that helped him reach a wider audience.
The store was an immediate success, and by the 1870s, it had expanded to neighboring buildings, eventually covering an entire city block. Macy’s implemented several retail innovations, including “money-back guarantees,” the first in-store Santa Claus, and elaborate holiday window displays. These initiatives contributed to Macy’s reputation as a trailblazer in the retail world.
In 1902, Macy’s moved to its current flagship location in Herald Square, at the intersection of 34th Street and Broadway. The new store was an architectural marvel, boasting one million square feet of selling space. Over the years, Macy’s Herald Square has become a New York City landmark, attracting millions of visitors annually and becoming the world’s largest store by square footage
MACY’S EXPANSION
By the early 20th century, Macy’s was more than just a department store—it was a cultural institution. The store’s massive success allowed it to expand beyond New York, acquiring regional chains nationwide. Macy’s became synonymous with quality, selection, and service, setting other retailers’ standards.
Macy’s influence extended beyond commerce, shaping how Americans experienced holidays and special events. Macy’s introduced extravagant Christmas window displays that became a must-see attraction for families during the holiday season. The store also became the focal point of Thanksgiving celebrations in New York City, a nod to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
THE THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the longest-running traditions in American history, and it celebrates its 98th anniversary this year. The parade was initially conceived by Macy’s employees, many of whom were immigrants who wanted to celebrate the American holiday in a grand, festive manner. Macy’s executives embraced the idea, seeing it as an opportunity to attract shoppers to the store and boost sales during the holiday season.
The first parade, known as the “Macy’s Christmas Parade,” took place on Thanksgiving Day in 1924 (the name was changed in 1927). It featured live animals borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, including elephants, camels, and bears. In addition to the animals, the parade included floats, professional bands, and costumed Macy’s employees. Santa Claus debuted at the end of the parade, a tradition that continues today, symbolizing the official start of the Christmas season.
The parade was a huge success, drawing crowds of over 250,000 people, and it became an annual event. In the years that followed, the parade grew in popularity, becoming a symbol of the Thanksgiving holiday for millions of Americans.
BALLOONS, FLOATS & SANTA
One of the most significant developments in the parade’s history was the introduction of giant helium balloons in 1927. Felix the Cat, a popular cartoon character at the time, was the first giant balloon to be featured in the parade. These balloons became an instant hit with the crowd and soon became the most iconic part of the parade.
The introduction of balloons marked a shift in the parade’s focus. Over the years, balloons grew in size and variety, featuring popular characters from pop culture, including Mickey Mouse, Superman and Snoopy. The parade also expanded its floats, bands, and live performances, becoming a spectacle that attracted New Yorkers and viewers from across the country.
In 1948, the parade began being broadcast on national television, further cementing its place in American culture. Millions of families tuned in to watch the parade each Thanksgiving morning, making it a cherished holiday tradition. The broadcast showcased not only the elaborate balloons and floats but also Broadway performances, celebrity appearances, and musical acts, providing entertainment for all ages.
THE PARADE IN THE MODERN ERA
As the parade evolved, so did its cultural significance. In the 1960s and 1970s, the parade reflected the shifting dynamics of American society, featuring a more diverse lineup of performances and characters that mirrored the country’s changing demographics. The 1980s and 1990s saw the parade embrace modern technology and marketing, with sponsors and corporations partnering with Macy’s to feature branded balloons and floats.
Despite the commercialization, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has remained a beloved family tradition. Each year, around 3.5 million spectators line the streets of Manhattan to watch the parade, while millions more tune in from home. The parade continues to feature a mix of new and classic balloons, floats, and performances, appealing to multiple generations of viewers—and, of course, the North Pole’s favorite resident.
CHALLENGES & TRIUMPHS
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has faced its challenges over the years. In the 1940s, the parade was suspended for three years during World War II, as the helium and rubber used for balloons were needed for the war effort. The parade returned in 1945 and resumed its role as a symbol of hope and celebration during the postwar years.
Mother Nature has also posed a challenge at times. High winds have occasionally forced parade organizers to ground balloons for safety reasons, and rain has dampened some performances. Despite these obstacles, the parade has consistently gone forward, embodying the resilience and joy of the holiday season.
In recent years, the COVID-19 pandemic presented one of the most significant challenges in the parade’s history. In 2020, Macy’s reimagined the event, holding a scaleddown version with no live spectators and a pre-recorded broadcast. The adjustments allowed the parade to continue its legacy while prioritizing public health.
A CELEBRATION OF TRADITION & INNOVATION
As the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade celebrates its 98th year on November 28th, it serves as a testament to Macy’s enduring legacy and its ability to adapt to changing times. The celebration is expected to be one of the most spectacular parades yet, with new balloons, floats, and performances paying homage to the event’s rich history while embracing the future.
Macy’s plans to honor the past by bringing back some of the most iconic balloons and floats from previous parades. The parade will likely feature special performances from Broadway shows, musicians, and celebrities, reflecting the parade’s evolution into a multimedia extravaganza.
The history of Macy’s is deeply intertwined with the history of American retail and popular culture. From its humble beginnings as a small dry goods store to its status as a retail giant, Macy’s has consistently been at the forefront of innovation and celebration. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade symbolizes that legacy—a beloved tradition that has brought joy to generations of Americans.
The parade continues to capture the spirit of Thanksgiving, uniting people from all walks of life in celebration. With a rich history and bright future, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade remains one of American culture’s most enduring and iconic events.

LISA VELEZ
THIS POP LEGEND’S HEART BEATS IN NEW YORK TIME
By Ilyssa Panitz
Lisa Velez, better known as the frontwoman from the 1980s group Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam, gets lost in emotion when you ask her anything about New York City. That’s because the singer, whose hit songs include “Can You Feel the Beat,” “I Wonder If I Take You Home,” and “Head to Toe,” was not only born and raised in Manhattan but every milestone that led Velez to where she is today happened right in the heart of New York City. As Velez takes a trip down memory lane in this exclusive interview for New York Lifestyles Magazine, the award-winning singer shares why she could never live anywhere but in New York.
Where in New York City were you born?
I was born and raised in Midtown Manhattan, on 49th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues, before we moved to 51st Street. Yes, there were plenty of us—I’m one of ten siblings. With my whole family still here, New York truly feels like home.
In what ways has New York influenced you both as a performer and a mother?
New York is truly the melting pot of the U.S., rich in diverse cultures. As a Puerto Rican, that heritage is deeply ingrained in me. Everything about my identity traces back to New York City—from the food and music to the people and vibrant streets of Broadway. It all comes together to shape who I am.
Do you take the New Yorker in you on stage at your performances?
Always! It’s who I am, so when you see me perform, you can see and hear it, too. My music is all about my life in New York. I was raised listening to salsa. Here in the Big Apple, there is a serious and unique flavor that includes fashion, hairstyles, and as I just mentioned, music. This is where I draw my inspiration.
Tell our readers where and when you were discovered.
It happened when I was 13 years old at The Fun House in New York City, a popular club/hangout on the West Side known for its freestyle music and helping Madonna launch her career.
When did you know you made it?
When I heard myself on Z100 for the first time. I was working at Benetton folding sweaters. It was at that moment I knew I was connecting with my people. New Yorkers are the most competitive bunch. When I knew I captured their attention, I knew I was on my way.
Which venue or arena has had the most significance for you?
Radio City Music Hall. It was my dream to perform there. I remember I used to stare at Radio City Music Hall when I was a kid and tell my parents that I wanted to see my name up in lights on the marquee. When that happened in 1984, I remember getting off the tour bus, getting on the ground, and kissing the sidewalk. We had a sell-out performance for two nights. It was magical.
Do you regularly perform at Radio City Music Hall?
Yes, once every year. Our last time was last July. The day before, I was in the 67th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade, another big piece of New York I treasure.
Given your career involves worldwide travel, what keeps you anchored in New York rather than living elsewhere?
New York is home. Everything I was taught and how I was raised is here in New York. I also wanted to raise my children here to understand and explore the many different neighborhoods of New York—Broadway, the West Village and the Lower East Side. They all have music!
New York City is considered the food capital of the world. Where do you like to go?
I do a lot of home cooking, but if I am going out for dinner, I am a fan of the restaurants around the theater district because there are many cuisines and cultures in that one area of the city. I used to go to a Cuban restaurant called La Palma, which I believe has closed its doors.
As for street fairs, The Ninth Avenue Food Festival is by far the best in New York. Held annually during the Spring, it is a two-day food extravaganza featuring delicacies from distinct cultures. Plus, there is great music and cool merchandise you can buy.
What about nightlife? Where do you like to hang out and explore?
Listening to live music in the Village on West 3rd Street. Café Wha and The Blue Note are also two of my favorite places where you can find me.
Where does Lisa Velez go to wander and explore?
The Hudson Yards and the Highline are amazing. When I was a kid, I remember it was nothing more than a highway. Not anymore. Today, it’s a park with restaurants and places to shop, plus walking and bike paths. I also like to visit Central Park and Broadway.
What has been the most important lesson you instill in your children about the city?
Many people from many different countries have come to New York to rebuild a new life. My kids need to know that this is where so many people were created. Take me, for example. When I was growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, it was a predominantly Irish and Puerto Rican area. Now, everything has changed and evolved, but you never forget where you came from. We fought to get here and made New York happen together!
LEA SALONGA
THE VOICE OF A GENERATION
By Patricia Canole
From the bustling streets of Manila to the bright lights of Broadway, Lea Salonga has captivated audiences worldwide with her mesmerizing voice and captivating performances. A true icon of musical theatre and beyond, Salonga’s journey is a testament to talent, perseverance, and the universal power of music.
In the Philippines, Salonga showed early signs of her exceptional talent. At just seven years old, she made her musical theater debut in The King and I with Repertory Philippines. This early start set the stage for what would become a legendary career spanning decades and continents.
Salonga’s big break came in 1989 when she was cast as Kim in the premiere production of Miss Saigon in London’s West End. Her portrayal of the young Vietnamese bar girl caught in the turmoil of the Vietnam War was nothing short of revolutionary. At just 18 years old, Salonga’s powerful vocals and emotionally charged performance earned her the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical, making her the first Asian woman to win in that category.
The success of Miss Saigon catapulted Salonga to international stardom. She reprised the role on Broadway in 1991, securing a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical—another historic first for an Asian performer. Salonga’s interpretation of Kim became the gold standard.
But Salonga’s talents weren’t confined to the stage. In 1992, she lent her voice to Disney’s animated classic Aladdin, singing as Princess Jasmine in the Oscar-winning duet “A Whole New World.” This was followed by another iconic Disney role in 1998 when she provided both the speaking and singing voice for Mulan in the film of the same name. These performances introduced Salonga’s remarkable voice to a whole new generation of fans and solidified her status as a Disney legend.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Salonga continued to make her mark on Broadway. She starred as Éponine in Les Misérables in 1993, becoming the first Asian actress to play the role on Broadway. Later, in 2007, she returned to the production as Fantine, showcasing her versatility and enduring appeal.
Salonga’s concert career has been equally impressive. She has performed for multiple U.S. Presidents, British royalty, and at prestigious venues around the world. Whether she’s belting out Broadway classics or putting her unique spin on contemporary pop hits, Salonga’s concerts are a masterclass in vocal technique and emotional delivery.
In recent years, Salonga has taken on new challenges, including serving as a coach on the Philippine version of The Voice. This role allowed her to mentor young talents and share her wealth of experience with a new generation of performers. She has also continued to push herself artistically, taking on roles in plays and exploring different musical genres in her concerts and recordings.
As she enters her fifth decade in the entertainment industry, Lea Salonga shows no signs of slowing down.
She continues to perform, record, and inspire audiences around the world. In fact, her new Christmas album is set to drop in the coming weeks.
As she continues to evolve as an artist and inspire new generations, one thing remains certain: Lea Salonga’s voice will echo through the annals of theater history for decades to come.
We met up with Lea Salonga recently to find out more about her pursuits and new Christmas album.
Looking back on your journey, what moment stands out as the most pivotal in shaping your career?
Throughout my career there have been many moments that I could consider pivotal. There was a Sunday mass that I attended with my mother while I was performing in Miss Saigon in the West End. After reading the gospel, the visiting priest said just two things in his entire homily: “We were all given gifts from God; use the gifts that God gave you.” My mother and I then looked at each other, totally struck. At that point I decided that no matter what happens my life would revolve around the theater.
You’ve been a trailblazer for Asian representation on Broadway. How have you seen this landscape change over your career?
At the earlier part of my career on Broadway, I found myself the only actor of color in shows (referring to playing Eponine in Les Miz on Broadway). Later, after around 15 years, I was cast as Fantine in Les Miz’s first Broadway revival. This time, I wasn’t the only actor of color, but rather one of many. I called it the United Colors of Les Misérables, it was so wonderful.
What I’d love to see more of though, are people of color in directing, producing and designing spaces. Spaces where we’re not always present. I laud folks like Tony winner Clint Ramos— one of the lead producers on the Broadway production of Here Lies Love—who are passionate about further pushing that envelope. He’s been quite a frequent colleague and marvelous friend.
How do you keep challenging yourself artistically at this stage in your career?
I’m currently performing in a wordless play titled Request sa Radyo based on Franz Xaver Kroetz’s 1973 play Wunschkonzert (Request Concert) and it’s quite a trip. Because it’s wordless, and I’m someone who has depended heavily on my singing or speaking voice for my whole life, having that taken away is challenging. But as I’ve been working on the play, I’ve found it liberating. There aren’t any obstacles between the audience and me; they get a direct line to what’s going on, and the silence becomes a co-star. It’s been a wonderful experience.
Tell us more about your Christmas album and what prompted you to do it.
The short answer: I’m Filipino and the Christmas season at home spans all the months that end in -ber. My last Christmas album was in the early 2000s, so we all felt it was time to make a new one. There’s a big band, pop, jazz and traditional music represented, and it was a lot of fun to record. It took four years to do, since principal recording had to be halted due to COVID lockdowns in 2020, and we couldn’t pick back up until early 2024. I serve as one of the producers of this new record, and it’s been quite exciting filling this new responsibility.

THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS SPARKLES
AT CHRISTMAS TREE FARM
One of the highlights of the Christmas season is getting the tree—whether at a tree farm or local shop. The festival of lights just got a little brighter. This is a fantastic piece from DH New York—a one-piece dress with a casual elegance. The satin slip dress design gives a bit of sheen and glam but well balanced with the coziness of a cashmere sweater. I’d also wear this look—with a tall boot.

THE MILKY WAY
DAIRY-BASED PRODUCTS FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN
By Patricia Canole
Cleopatra, the legendary queen of ancient Egypt, may indeed have been ahead of her time when she bathed in milk to maintain her legendary beauty. Today, the beauty industry has rediscovered the potent benefits of milk products, incorporating them into a wide array of skincare formulations. From creamy cleansers to luxurious body lotions, these products often feature ingredients like whole milk, buttermilk, yogurt, and even milk proteins
The lactic acid found in milk acts as a gentle exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother, more radiant complexion. This makes milk-infused products particularly appealing to those with sensitive skin who find traditional chemical exfoliants too harsh.
The vitamins and minerals naturally present in milk, including vitamins A, D, and E, as well as calcium, further contribute to the efficacy of milk-based beauty products. SALZBURG HOLIDAY CHARM
CHRISTMAS MARKETS AND MUCH MORE IN AUSTRIA
By Jenny Peters
No matter what the season, Salzburg is a charming city, with its massive Fortress overlooking the Salzach River and the Altstadt, the Old City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Austrian Alps loom to the east in this place, which evokes The Sound of Music to fans of that classic film, for much of it was shot on location here.
Salzburg, which sits just inside Austria’s northeastern border with Germany, is also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1756 and the home of the famed Salzburg Festival, the music-filled event, of course, includes Mozart concerts and more and happens for five weeks every summer from July to August.
And now, as the winter season arrives, Salzburg pulls out all the stops during Advent, the time that Christians celebrate the coming birthday of Jesus Christ. It begins in late November and continues to early January, with various parades, musical events, and this picturesque city’s famed Christmas markets.
SPECIAL SETTINGS
The settings for Salzburg’s huge Christmas markets are spectacular, especially if there’s some snow on the ground, which turns this beautiful place into a dreamland. Many markets are called “Advent Markets” instead of “Christmas markets” because they span the Advent season, the four Sundays and the weeks in between that lead up to Christmas Day.
Part of what makes the Salzburg markets so unique is that they are set on the grounds of iconic spots around the city, like the Christkindlmarket on Domplatz and Residenzplatz (also known as the Salzburg Christmas Market). That’s one of the world’s oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets, always set right in Salzburg Cathedral Square and dating back to the 15th century.
Traditional huts overflow with gift-giving and seasonal tasting possibilities, over 90 different choirs perform every day at 5 pm, and “tower-blowing” musicians perform carols from the three towers surrounding the Residenzplatz every Thursday and Saturday, all in the heart of Old Town, the UNESCO World Heritage Site that makes Salzburg a unique place to explore.
INCREDIBLE VIEWS
Meanwhile, high above the Old Town at Festung Hohensalzburg (the Castle Fortress), the Advent Market brings the holiday season to another iconic spot in the city. With the incredible views that make this Fortress built in the 11th century a popular spot all year round. This Christmas market, that’s only open on weekends, is reached by taking the funicular up the side of the massive Festungsberg mountain that overlooks the city.
For a unique experience, head south of the city center to Schloss Hellbrunn, the famous palace renowned for its tricky fountains. Although the market there is only twenty years old, it is one of the city’s most popular because of its lovely setting, with stalls specializing in handcrafted items.
Other Christmas markets around the city are found in Mirabellplatz, Sternarkaden, and Salzachsee. Visitors can visit a different one each day to taste the mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and gingerbread cookies that each one is sure to offer.
KRAMPUS!
Austrians add a holiday tradition specific to the region with the arrival of Krampus, a horned, half-goat/halfdemon creature whose origins go back in Alpine folklore to pagan times. He’s been the scary part of the Advent season since Christianity began: the monster who comes to punish children who don’t behave. He was always told to arrive the night of December 5 along with St. Nicholas (the original Santa Claus) to spank those wayward kids with a switch!
These days, Krampus is an integral part of Salzburg’s celebrations leading to Christmas, always appearing for his “Krampus Run” on Krampusnacht at the Salzburg Christmas Market. That’s where you’ll find hordes of revelers dressed up as the monster (or as St. Nick) parading in the streets in a slightly wacky celebration filled with funny rituals.
The next day at the market, Krampus and St. Nick return for Kinderkrampus (children’s Krampus) with a big bag of toys to gift to all the kids who’ve been good. It’s a traditional celebration that delights the children and adults.
WINING, DINING & MOZART
No visit to Salzburg would be complete without taking in at least one Mozart concert, so plan to enjoy the numerous Mozart and Advent concerts held inside the Fortress at holiday time. Those events can also include a candlelight dinner at the Panorama Restaurant, which offers gorgeous views of the city below.
Or dine on the edge of the Old City at the Sternbräu, a chic place today that was once one of Mozart’s favorite dining spots. These days, Chef Michael Pratter serves up his unique Austrian melding of traditional and modern cuisine, paired with classic regional wines like Grüner Veltliner and Zweigelt or (of course) their very own beer, Sternbier.
To round out a holiday visit to this beautiful place, take in the house where Mozart was born and the residence where he and his sister lived as child prodigies (her story is fascinating, too) as both are museums now; and don’t miss St. Peter’s Cemetery, the oldest in Austria and the spot where the von Trapp family hides from the Nazis in The Sound of Music. We also predict that by the time you depart, Salzburg will likely be high on your list.

GOLDEN REVIVAL
AUSTRALIA’S GOLDEN GEM REIMAGINED
By Natasha Bazika
Back in the swinging sixties and seventies, the Gold Coast was Australia’s answer to paradise. Surf beaches stretched for miles, theme parks promised a day of escape for the kids, and the twinkling lights of caravan parks were a comforting beacon in the night. For most Australians, the Gold Coast was a rite of passage—a quintessential Australian summer. Today, it lives in the lap of luxury.
The Gold Coast skyline, a jagged line of skyscrapers like teeth on a key, stretches before me as I bite into a Rick Shores’ Moreton Bay Bug roll slathered in spicy mayo. The waiter had told me it’s a classic, a musttry for anyone visiting. He was right. I couldn’t think of a more fitting introduction to the new Gold Coast. Then, a rain shower forced a faint rainbow to appear as I left the restaurant, driving back into the city.
The Gold Coast has recently transformed from a sleepy coastal town into a sophisticated destination boasting luxury hotels, gourmet dining, and championship golf courses. Yet, its laid-back charm endures, offering the family a perfect blend of luxury and relaxation.
INTO THE MOUNTAINS
Forget the stereotype of the Gold Coast as a mere beach playground. A short drive inland reveals a lush, mountainous region with surprises. Here, passionate winemakers craft award-winning drops that rival those of Australia’s more renowned wine regions.
The best way to experience the region is to leave the decisionmaking and drive to a local Kiff and Culture guide on a private tour of Tamborine Mountain. Discover the lesser-known Granite Belt wine region, known for its Chambourcin and Verdelho grapes. Taste everything from Sauvignon Blanc to Shiraz and the emerging orange wines. There are also a few distilleries and breweries emerging, which you can experience at one of the many stops along the way, including a walk through one of the most famous rainforests in Australia.
THE CITY’S JEWELS
Perched between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, The Langham Gold Coast is a dazzling newcomer to the skyline and a destination in itself. If it’s the preferred escape for the likes of Harry Styles, then you know it’s a destination worth exploring.
Surrender to an ocean-view suite, where waking up to the world-famous Gold Coast coastline is a daily treat. Each suite is a haven of comfort and style, boasting plush bedding, marble bathrooms, and all the modern conveniences you could desire. Then, when it’s time to unwind, dip into the hotel’s lagoonstyle pool, complete with a swim-up bar, or enjoy a treatment at Chuan Spa inspired by traditional Chinese medicine.
If there’s one meal to have in the hotel, it’s undoubtedly at T’ang Court, a three-Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant that has made the journey from Hong Kong to the Gold Coast. The menu is a masterclass in Cantonese cuisine, highlighting the freshest seafood and classic dishes. For the ultimate indulgence, the Chef’s Degustation menu is a generous taste of the restaurant’s culinary artistry.
A NEW ERA IN DINING
Rick Shores set a new standard of dining on the Gold Coast when it opened in 2016, making it the perfect place to start any dining adventure. Soak in the beachfront views at sunset and the laid-back atmosphere, a staple of any restaurant here. The Pan-Asian menu is award-winning, with inspired classics like the Moreton Bay bug roll, lobster, and prawn jade harrow with truffle and smoked honey. Back in the city, Palette Restaurant is hidden inside HOTA (Home of the Arts), a center for art, entertainment, and culture This high-end eatery takes a unique approach, crafting a tasting menu that evolves with each new exhibition. Chef Dayan Hartill Law draws inspiration from the artwork on display, creating dishes that are as much a feast for the eyes as they are for the palate. With a strong emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients, many sourced from the chef’s garden, Palette is a gastronomic adventure that deserves a spot on every Gold Coast food lover’s list.
Nearby in Broadbeach, KŌST Bar & Grill offers a taste of coastal living with Mediterranean influences. The menu relies on a central wood-fired charcoal grill, where fresh seafood, local meats, and even vegetables are kissed by fire. The menu punches with flavor, with the likes of blackened hispi cabbage smothered in pistachio cream and zesty lemon. KŌSTis a prime example of how the Gold Coast is rapidly gaining international recognition as a culinary destination.

Imagine yourself reclining on the sandy white beaches, soaking in the volcanic mud baths of Soufrière, ziplining through lush rainforests, indulging in authentic island food, club-hopping on the Rodney Bay strip, and riding ATVs through the countryside. Envision exploring abandoned sugar plantations, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, chasing brightly colored fish in the shadow of the Pitons, or experiencing a live sea turtle hatching in the last light of dusk.
Equal parts beauty and mystique, Saint Lucia captivates anyone who sets foot on her coastline. Always evocative, she welcomes visitors with her soothing waves, warm beaches, and hospitable people. The only sovereign nation to be named for a woman, the island personifies adventure and inspiration. Her visitors invariably find themselves reluctant to leave and eager to return. MOUNTAIN VIEW GRAND RESORT & SPA
ELEGANCE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE’S WHITE MOUNTAINS
By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
Since its humble beginnings as a traveler-welcoming farmhouse in 1865, much has changed at this grand hotel set at the picturesque peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. One thing remains the same: its inception as an inn that remains today is its most alluring quality. That one constant is perfectly reflected in the resort’s name—Mountain View Grand.
The view of the White Mountains’ Presidential Range, which one enjoys while sitting in one of the many Adirondack chairs on the inn’s expansive veranda, is nothing short of spectacular. Include the wellmanicured lawns of the resort’s nine-hole golf course that slopes down from the front of the inn, and the view is mesmerizing.
The resort is a 1,700-acre natural playground located in Whitefield, New Hampshire. A recent multi-million-dollar renovation has enhanced the guest experience perfectly, preserving historical details and classic architecture while offering modern amenities that offer comfort and luxury.
The Mountain View Grand is the AAA Four Diamond Award-winning fourseason resort recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers 141 wellappointed guest rooms and suites, many with outstanding views of the mountains.
DELICIOUS DINING
Four dining options are available, ranging from classic elegance to scenic casual. An elegant atmosphere awaits guests in Harvest Tavern. A menu focused on local sourcing is offered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Consider the Cedar Plank Faroe Island Salmon or the Six-Hour Braised Lamb Shank. An outdoor terrace is perfect for alfresco dining in the warmer months. The Harvest Tavern Bar offers the full Tavern menu in a casual, convivial setting.
An even more elevated dining experience is offered in the 1865 Wine Cellar. A four-course, prix-fixe menu is served in the intimate setting of the Resort’s Wine Cellar. A complimentary glass of Champagne is served with the opening charcuterie board of artisanal meats and local cheeses. In fact, Mountain View Grand has been selected as a winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence since 2009 for its outstanding wine list.
During warmer months, enjoy the view of the mountains as you dine on the veranda. In addition to various sandwiches, burgers, and wraps, a newly introduced signature pizza menu highlights various delectable options. The Maple Bacon pizza was delicious.
The gorgeous mountain view may tempt you to wile away the hours, but the list of activities offered at Mountain View Grand will spur you to get involved. A printed schedule of activities is available at the front desk each morning. Check on the movies playing in the 16-seat In-House Movie Theater. See if an Adult Axe Throwing competition, a Water Aerobics Class, a Yoga class, or an Evening Campfire is scheduled. A variety of lawn games are available.
Mountain View Grand Resort is an excellent choice for families, as many family-friendly activities are offered year-round. The resort’s signature kids’ camp, Mountain Adventure Camp, offers a variety of activities, including crafts, cooking demonstrations, and guided excursions. Winter fun includes exploring Mountain View Grand’s 10 miles of trails on snowshoes, cross-country skis, or a snowmobile available for rent nearby. Skate on the resort’s pond or snow tube on the hills. Enjoy a horse-drawn sleigh ride or a dog-sled adventure with a local kennel.
Everyone loves to visit the resort’s Mountain View Farm and interact with the many animals. Scheduled goats or llama walks are extremely popular. Meet with the farmer to learn about farm operations and animal care. Kids love gathering newly hatched chicken and duck eggs. In the fall, help the farmer gather some “drop apples” and press them for the freshest apple cider ever.
Other resort activities include mountain biking, disc golf, tennis, and pickleball. The resort has indoor/outdoor pools, a fitness center offering a variety of classes, and a game room with a pool table, air hockey, foosball, and ping pong. Of course, Mountain View Grand’s historic 9-hole golf course offers challenging play in a scenic setting.
After enjoying the scenic views from Mountain View Grand, you will want to check out some of the many attractions of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Some of the top spots to visit include Flume Gorge in Franconia State Park, Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves in North Woodstock, Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, Mt. Washington Auto Road and Cog Railway, and the Conway Scenic Railway. Skiers have their pick of a half dozen or more ski areas within an hour’s drive of the resort.

YULETIDE HOMECOMING
ELEVATE YOUR GATHERINGS WITH EXPERT DESIGN TIPS
By Peter Chong, BoConcept Designs
Ialways remind hosts that the dining table is the heart of holiday gatherings. It’s where we come together, share meals and create memories with loved ones. Crafting a stunning tablescape elevates the experience and makes your guests feel welcome. So, let’s get inspired by the season’s top trends and create unforgettable tablescapes that capture the season’s magic for every gathering.
COLOR YOUR WORLD
Every great tablescape starts with a solid foundation. Begin by choosing your place settings, linens and an overall color palette.
• For Thanksgiving, warm, earthy tones like burnt orange, deep red and mustard yellow can be real standouts. Around Christmas, elegant forest greens and rich reds look great, and metallics can be added during the transitionary period approaching New Year’s Eve for extra sparkle magic.
• Incorporating classic patterns like plaid elevates the look while adding a touch of rustic charm to the table. Layer a plaid runner or napkins with more neutral tones to create balance and avoid overwhelming the table.
• When it comes to linens, quality is critical. Choosing great, high-quality tablecloths, napkins and placemats ensures the finished product looks as luxe as possible. Layering is a terrific way to mix textures and add depth.
ALPINE SOIREES
When Christmas rolls around, it’s time to have some fun. This is the season to get creative and even theatrical with your tablescape.
• I recommend layering luxurious textures like velvet and faux fur to achieve this look. Add elements like miniature pine trees, snow-dusted branches, or frosted glassware to evoke a magical, wintery atmosphere. The key here is to lean into the festive spirit and not be afraid to go big with your décor!
• For those who enjoy a more colorful holiday, I encourage embracing jewel tones and rich textures. Gold, silver and deep green accents will give your table that extra touch of holiday glamor while setting the stage for a seamless transition to New Year’s Eve decorations.
GOLDEN ACCENTS
New Year’s Eve is all about glamour and boldness. I always recommend incorporating gold accents. They instantly elevate the table and create a luxurious feeling.
• Gold flatware, sparkling glassware and candles are must-haves for creating an elegant and celebratory atmosphere. Candles of varying heights are a wonderful way to add depth and drama to your table. They make a warm, inviting ambiance with style for ringing in the new year.
• When planning your tablescape, two primary focuses should be a great foundation and a shining centerpiece. Once you’ve selected the colors, patterns, and textures you plan to use, you can begin to assemble the centerpiece.
• The centerpiece is the focal point of any tablescape, where you can make a statement. Whether you’re going for a simple arrangement or something more dramatic, the centerpiece should reflect the overall theme of the table. Just remember, balance is critical. Keep the focus on the main elements while letting the accents enhance the overall look.

Dear Mindie,
I’m completely distraught. My son is getting married in 2025 to a wonderful woman. I am incredibly happy about their upcoming wedding, but it’s also creating a lot of friction between me and my family. Even though I come from a large family, my son and his fiancé chose a venue that can only hold 150 people. Therefore, many will not be invited, and the situation is causing a lot of upset.
We decided only to invite immediate family members and cousins who are of my generation and many cousins of my son’s generation; guests of my mother’s generation are not included, as a result. The cousins are causing a lot of turmoil, and my mother’s behavior is horrendous. She has caused such stress and aggravation that there are no words to express the anger I am feeling. My son has shared that he will not come to Thanksgiving if she is going to be present because of the wedding arguments.
Please help me!
Wedding Bells
Dear Wedding Bells,
It sounds like you are going through a lot! Wedding planning can bring out the best and worst in people as emotions are strong and stress levels abnormally high. It sounds like your mother is the brunt of your problems, however. From what you described, there are other obstacles, like your cousins. Not everyone will understand your son and finance’s choice to have a smaller wedding. That is okay.
They do not need their permission or approval. You need to adhere to the authentic narrative that the venue only holds a certain number of people. Therefore, you were forced only to invite certain generations of family members. There is nothing more to say or do on that front. They may not understand the circumstances but must accept them and move on from this issue.
Your mother, on the other hand, is creating a more significant issue. From what you are sharing, it seems as though she does not respect your boundaries or your son’s. As a result, you must exercise your muscles to maintain them. First, I would try to express your upset calmly and collectedly, even if she is not responding with the same even-keeled tone.
Rather than pointing fingers in her direction, I would explain (just as you will with your cousins) the venue’s limitations concerning capacity and that this is your son’s wedding, not yours or hers. She must respect the couple’s wishes, support them, and be a loving guest at their celebration. If she is unwilling to abide, then you can tell her to stay home, as well as remove her from events (like Thanksgiving and holiday gatherings) until she is respectful and not causing an uproar.
I know that the last part seems harsh, but just like children need to have consequences to achieve a desired behavior modification, adults do, too. I don’t think cutting her off financially or turning your back on her entirely is a fair or realistic option, so removing her from family events until her behavior is acceptable is your best bet. Either way, she needs consequences.
Best of luck, and I hope things start becoming more exciting than stressful sooner rather than later.

If the stresses of modern life have gotten on your last nerve and the chilly winter winds have started blowing down your street, then Maui is the right place to run away to—more specifically, to the southwestern side of that Hawaiian island. That’s where the Grand Wailea Maui, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, beckons—perfectly suited to renew, refresh, relax, and recharge your internal batteries. This elegant beachfront enclave is one of Hawaii’s landmark hotels, constructed in 1991 and far from the terrible 2023 fire that destroyed the city of Lahaina.
That fire is a crucial reason to choose Maui for a warm-weather escape, as the island’s tourism-based economy suffered terribly after the city was lost. It is slowly being rebuilt, but the rest of the island is just as vibrant and beautiful as ever, especially the Wailea area, which has long been famed for its beautiful beaches, golf courses, and luxury hotels.
There are myriad ways to immerse yourself in a wellness bubble from the moment you arrive at the Grand Wailea. Drop your bags, throw on the swimsuit, and hit the warm ocean water for starters, then prepare for the resort’s newest attraction, Hawaii’s most significant.
You’ll be surprised to hear that it’s not the massive Wailea Canyon Activity Pool, with its five intertwining slides (as well as another whitewater rapids slide), caves, waterfalls, four jungle pools, and even a “Tarzan” pool with an actual rope swing. However, that’s where to drop all your city stress at the water’s edge and have a blast. No, the biggest thing happening is the new spa, which opened in 2024. We recently got to experience it firsthand, and it is spectacular.
THE NEW JEWEL
Stepping into the Kilolani Spa’s lobby, it isn’t immediately apparent that 50,000 square feet of spa facilities are awaiting you. That massive size makes it the largest spa in Hawaii, one that is outfitted with the most modern spa innovations and permeated with indigenous Hawaiian culture and Polynesian wellness knowledge.
The Hawaiian influence is evident when you enter the “Portal,” the first stop into a world filled with ways to find many kinds of bliss. Unsurprisingly, the space evokes the moon, as in Hawaiian culture, “the Kilolani” are the stargazers, the people who find the night sky an inspiring place filled with meaning that can be brought to earth.
This namesake leads to a unique and specific way for this spa to structure its offerings by following the moon cycles (Helu Pō in Hawaiian). That means the treatments and products used constantly change every ten days, using the moon as the guide.
Once inside, Kilolani Spa is a cornucopia of wellness delights, ranging from the expected spa treatments, including signature rituals lasting two hours, designed to promote relaxation and even help with insomnia, to massage facials and body treatments. Add more unexpected possibilities with a sound healing experience, an astrology reading with “soul healing,” and a breathwork session, with the result (perhaps) being a new perspective on life.
YOU’LL DEFINITELY WANT MORE
Take that blissful feeling into the gorgeous outdoor Hydrotherapy Gardens and let Hawaiian waters wash over you in stimulating hot/ cold plunge pools, a saltwater flotation pool, a hammam influenced by Hawaiian traditions, a steam room, a sauna, and more. You’ll want to return for more when you float out of this spa. There’s also yoga classes held out in the gardens, on the beach, or in a studio; a trip into the vast, fully equipped gym; standup paddleboarding out in the ocean; and even a visit to “the biostation,” where vitamin infusions, testosterone therapy, peptide therapy, and other medical treatments await.
You can even book into one of the resort’s wellness rooms, complete with eucalyptus bedding, air purifiers, meditation goggles, compression boots, a white noise machine, and more, all designed to put you in a state of physical and emotional bliss.
Spend at least one evening indulging in the resort’s Botero Lounge, where massive sculptures by that talented artist overlook a lively space that serves craft cocktails, sushi, steaks, and burgers in an open-air setting.

DON’T-MISS ENTICEMENTS
No trip to Maui is complete without making time for some of the island’s don’tmiss experiences, starting with taking the road to Hana. That winding cliff’s edge road is spectacular, with lots of chances to park near one of the countless streams you cross and then climb up into the rainforest to discover a pristine waterfall. Wear a swimsuit, bring a towel and water shoes, and jump in!
Once in Hana, be sure to go past the small town and visit the Seven Sacred Pools (Pools of Ohe’o), one of Maui’s most beautiful natural formations. Make time to visit Haleakala National Park, which is high up in southern Maui. That’s where the volcanic crater awaits, a silently eerie place with a landscape that seems like the moon’s surface must be. Take a short, medium, or long hike there, and be sure to carry water, as temperatures can get warm in the dormant caldera. It’s a spectacular sight, as are the views of the island and ocean stretching out below.
If you’re feeling adventurous, take a snorkeling or scuba diving trip out to Molokini for a look at giant clams, gorgeous coral reefs, and even a shark or two. Make sure your boat stops at Turtle Town, a spot in the ocean where sea turtles call home. That’s a genuinely magical ocean adventure that always makes your heart sing.

DR. JENNIFER JABLOW
THE ORAL HEALTH GURU
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Dr. Jennifer Jablow has been crafting the Hollywood smiles of celebs and everyday New Yorkers for the past 25 years. But don’t just take her word for it. Supermodel Ashley Graham, among others, is one of Dr. Jablow’s biggest fans.
Dr. Jablow, however, is not your typical Fifth Avenue dentist. For the past 15-plus years, she has had the top-selling oral care line on HSN with her proprietary brand IntelliWHiTE. After years of listening to her patients’ concerns about teeth sensitivity and suboptimal whitening results, Dr. Jablow set out to create an easy and effective way to whiten and care for your smile at home without painful side effects or harm to the enamel. Her latest hit invention is her IntelliWHITE Pro Strips, infused with mineral technology and clinically proven to whiten 12 shades lighter while causing ZERO harm to the enamel. This is in stark contrast to other strips on the market.
PROMISES RESULTS
For over a decade, Dr. Jablow invented numerous patented and award-winning products but had shied away from selling strips. She knew using whitening strips was convenient, but she also had treated too many patients with worn enamel and sensitivity from using the ones sold in the drugstore and online. “People lose minerals and weaken their teeth when using the traditional drugstore strips.” Motivated to produce a better strip, through years of research, Dr. Jablow invented the IntelliWHiTE Pro Strips, which were tested independently by the University of Indiana and proven to cause zero harm to the enamel while whitening the teeth a stunning 12 shades whiter. Pro Strips are infused with essential tooth minerals, calcium and phosphate, as well as xylitol to help facilitate tooth remineralization. The Pro Strips also have super grip technology, keeping them firmly in place. In clinical studies, 97 percent had zero sensitivity.
Launched two years ago, Pro Strips were an instant smash with consumers, with over 3.5 million sold. The efficacy of her Pro Strips has not gone unnoticed— U.S News & World Report just named the Pro Strips the best-advanced whitening strips on the market.
This was just the latest in a long line of awards Dr. Jablow has garnered over the years, including winning Men’s Health’s best oral care product, the 2021 New Beauty Award Winner for best toothpaste and Women’s Health Magazine’s best teeth whitener of the year.
Dr. Jablow regularly appears on HSN, educating consumers about oral health. She is passionate about creating safer, more effective, and cleaner products that can benefit millions through the convenience of shopping at home. “HSN gives me a platform to connect and educate people all over the country, many of whom have written and called to tell me how life-changing my products have been for them,” she says.
THE WELLNESS WAY
She grasps the vital relationship between oral care and total body health “Your mouth is the gateway to your heart. Inflammation and bacteria in the mouth will cause problems throughout the body. Besides the foundation of gum health, your teeth need an environment that allows them to ward off bacteria and mineral loss,” she explains.
But buyer beware: Indiscriminately shopping at the drugstore or online will result in you purchasing products containing dangerous, unhealthy ingredients with side effects. “Ninety percent of what you brush with is absorbed into your body, and some ingredients in drugstore and internet-only brands hawked by celebs will not only be a danger to your overall health but also can cause enamel loss, which will lead to heightened sensitivity and a darker smile.” Besides harmful ingredients like parabens, dyes, triclosan, and saccharine, those whitening toothpastes are often overly abrasive and will damage your tooth enamel over time.
IntelliWHiTE will launch its cleanest and most effective re-mineralizing toothpaste in February 2025 on HSN. It will focus on essential minerals and vitamins the mouth needs and natural ingredients that fight bacteria. Ingredients have been sourced from Italy and France to strengthen the teeth, protect the gum tissue, decrease sensitivity, and improve polish to a just-to-the-dentist shine. Initial testing has shown that it gently removes 90 percent of stains in just two weeks of brushing.
In her spare time, Dr. Jablow helps rescue homeless animals with the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation with her husband, who is Chairman of the Shelter’s Board of Directors.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jennifer Jablow to the New York Lifestyles Magazine editorial family. Starting in January, Jennifer will write a column dedicated to oral health.

NYC’S ENCHANTED HOLIDAY RESTAURANTS & BARS
By Patricia Canole
New York City’s holiday magic isn’t just on the streets - it’s on the plate, too. As the city dons its winter coat, many restaurants transform into cozy hideaways and glittering winter wonderlands. From traditional German fare served under a canopy of ornaments to rooftop cocktails with skyline views, these spots offer a feast for all senses. Let’s unwrap some of the Big Apple’s most festive dining experiences.
ROLF’S GERMAN RESTAURANT
Christmas On Steroids
If subtlety isn’t your thing, Rolf’s in Gramercy Park is your holiday heaven. This place doesn’t just decorate for Christmas; it practically becomes Christmas. Every inch is plastered with ornaments, lights, and enough tinsel to make an elf dizzy. The effect? It’s like dining inside a giant snow globe that’s been shaken, not stirred.
But Rolf’s isn’t just about the visuals. Their hearty German classicsthink schnitzel the size of your face and potato pancakes that could double as frisbees - are the perfect antidote to winter’s chill. Wash it all down with a mug of mulled wine that tastes like Christmas in liquid form.

LILLIAN’S VICTORIAN ESTABLISHMENT
Dickens’ Dream Come True
With outposts in Times Square and Union Square, Lillie’s feels like you’ve stumbled onto the set of A Christmas Carol—minus the ghosts. Year-round, it’s a Victorian fever dream, but come December, it cranks the festive dial to eleven with holiday decorations everywhere you glance.
Picture this: marble fireplaces crackling away, crystal chandeliers twinkling overhead, and enough garlands to make you wonder if you’ve accidentally wandered into an elf’s workshop. CHICA & THE DON
LIVELY LATIN CUISINE IN THE HEART OF NYC
By Anne Raso | Photography by Noah Fecks
Chica & The Don is as unforgettable for its colorful surroundings as for its cuisine—a fusion of many distinct types of Latin fare, from Mexican and Puerto Rican to Cuban. You will love dining on comfortable tropical green and yellow velvet couches in the Hollywood Regency Style, surrounded by green tropical foliage. There’s even live Latin music on most nights.
Beverage Director Elvis Rosario tells NYL about the importance of a lively atmosphere: “In Latin American culture, vibrant aesthetics, and color play a crucial role in the energy of a room. At Chica & The Don, the colorful and lively atmosphere is just as important as the food. It creates an immersive and engaging environment that complements our menu and how we serve and take care of guests.”
There are many reasons why Chica & The Don was voted Conde Nast Traveler’s Best New Restaurant in NYC for 2024 but primarily you’ve got a team who has had experience with numerous types of food establishments/hospitality groups. Partner/Co-Owner Nicholas Semkiw remarks, “Our team brings a ton of experience from notable ventures in the industry. Additionally, we’ve provided consultancy services throughout NYC and NJ, helping to shape and elevate various dining concepts.”
The food is incredibly fresh, and many dishes come out of the kitchen in under five minutes! The wait staff ensures you are comfortable and that your food is prepared to your liking, even suggesting dips for your bread or good sides for your entrée. The signature cocktails are exceptionally beautiful, and many are served in glasses that resemble hand-painted terracotta planters.
BRING ON THE RUM
We visited Chica & The Don recently and, yes, we started with one of those signature cocktails called Chica—it’s a refreshing blend of Bacardi Cuatro Golden Aged Rum, coconut cream, strawberry condensed milk, and lemon juice. Adventurous drinkers who like sangria by the pitcher can order the Tito Puente, which features Aviation gin, red wine, vermouth, lime juice, lemon juice, Fanta and seasonal fruits.
The menu is short and straightforward, which is one of the reasons your food comes out at warped speed—but the main reason is that Executive Chef Jose Horrach who is super organized and wellversed in all types of Latin cuisine. He hand-selects produce from local markets and makes sure vegetables and herbs are chopped up long before the dinner rush.
There are ten types of tapas/appetizers, four varieties of empanadas, four sharing plates/entrees, five sides, and a few select desserts—with one large sharing plate special that your server will mention. The tapas items are oversized: a few can quickly satisfy two dinner guests—but if you get full, wrap up your tapas to go and try one of the fantastic four sharing plates! Some of the incredible tapas items we enjoyed are Short Rib Y Maduro Quesadilla (braised short rib quesadillas made with Maduro, a three-cheese blend, sided with Mexican cream and Pico de Gallo); Camerones Al Jillo (sautéed shrimp, saffron butter, white wine, lemon and tostones); Pollo Empanadas (herb marinated chicken and sofrito Rojo) and Alitas De Pollo (chicken wings cooked with mango habanero sauce and sides with sofrito tzatziki).
FROM POLLO TO PESCADO
The sharing plates can satisfy two to four amigos: Pollo Asado, a whole herb brined chicken, with aji verde and annatto saffron oil that is flamed tableside; Pescado a seasonal whole fried fish, fennel and orange escabeche; and Arroz Chaufa a delicious lobster and shrimp fried rice Peruvian style. We shared the ultra-tender Carne Asada, which was marinated with citrus resulting in unique, slightly sweet flavor.
Be sure to get one or more of Chica & The Don’s wonderful sides. We tried the Gallo Pinto (black beans with Nicaraguan style rice), a sweeter version of rice and beans with much less liquid. If you are a plantain lover, order the Maduros (sweet plantains) or Tostones (fried green plantains). The Yuca Papas (crispy Yuca fries with salsa rosado) are super golden and crispy and health oriented. Vegetarians will love the Ensalada De Aguate (avocado, baby gem lettuce, tomato and avocado dressing).
For dessert, we shared the Fried Ice Cream, a crispy, thick golden shell filled with homemade vanilla bean ice cream, and the moist yellow Tres Leches Cake topped with cream. Another popular item is the golden Churro Doughnuts, which have a lovely crunch.
MENU REVAMP FOR WINTER
You might think things couldn’t get better at what is arguably the most popular Latin restaurant of the moment, but Beverage Director Rosario tells us, “Lots of wonderful things are coming for us. We’re launching a brunch menu featuring new items like Mangú Chilaquiles, which combine plantain chips with traditional chilaquiles, and Brussels Sprouts with guajillo chili and honey. We’re also programming a late-night party featuring DJs playing Latin Disco.”
Semkiw chimes in, “One of the “standout moments for us with Chica & The Don has been discovering and catering to a unique marker in NYC’s dining. We’ve received positive feedback from guests who express excitement about the fun and high-quality experience we’ve created and have shared that they’ve been for something like this, which makes what we do incredibly rewarding. Latin American cuisine is incredibly diverse, extending far beyond the flavors of what most people think it is. Chica & The Don introduces New Yorkers to a rich history of regional flavors and ingredients. This approach highlights the diversity of Latin America and offers a fresh and exciting experience that stands out.”

CHECK-IN TO DINE OUT
TOAST THE HOLIDAYS AT THE WALL STREET HOTEL
By Alexandra Anastasio
Perched atop the historic Wall Street Hotel, Bar Tontine offers an unforgettable experience with its 180-degree terrace and sweeping New York City skyline views. The bar’s floor-toceiling windows create a stunning backdrop, making it an ideal spot for friends and family to gather, sip on creative cocktails, enjoy light bites, and take in the iconic Manhattan vista.
The interior is just as captivating. From the moment you step into the hotel’s exquisitely designed lobby, you’re welcomed by a sense of sophistication, with every detail, from the light fixtures to the carefully curated sculptures, embodying New York City’s signature style.
CONTEMPORARY CHARM
You will find a cozy yet elegant setting as you enter Bar Tontine on the 15th floor. The traditional homestyle decor immediately offers warmth, and friendly hosts are ready to escort you inside.
Paris’s iconic Maison de Verre inspires the bar’s design. It blends the energy of the bustling city outside with the calm, inviting ambiance within. The space balances modern industrial elements with timeless charm and touches of nature, offering a serene escape from the urban rush.
Named “Best Hotel in New York City” in its debut year by Travel + Leisure’s 2023, The Wall Street Hotel brings sophistication to the Financial District. Bar Tontine, situated in the former Tontine Coffee House building, honors its heritage while seamlessly merging old-world charm with a contemporary New York City vibe.
Until recently, Bar Tontine was a private event space, but earlier this year, it opened its doors to the public. Alongside its impressive cocktail menu, the bar recently introduced an immersive pop-up series, “In High Spirits,” in partnership with Bombay Sapphire Premiere Cru. This unique event celebrated cultural exchange through elevated cocktails, with awardwinning bars from around the world crafting bespoke cocktail menus over three days.
CREATIVE TWISTS
Each participating bar brought its distinctive flair, paying tribute to its locale and New York City’s vibrant beverage scene. The series kicked off with Cartagena’s El Barón, followed by London’s Three Sheets, Washington D.C.’s Silver Lyan, and concluded with the Cayman Islands’ Door No. 4. David Sandler, General Manager of The Wall Street Hotel, described the program as a tribute to the rich history and culture of cocktails in the heart of New York City.
I enjoyed attending the final installment. I savored the Caribbean Café cocktail, a delightful blend of Bacardi Coconut, Disaronno, and Mr. Black Espresso—a creative twist on the classic espresso martini. I also enjoyed a non-alcoholic option from the menu, the Non #1 Sparkling Rose, made with salted raspberry and chamomile. This paired perfectly with their Sunset Fries (truffle, herbs, and parmesan) and the Planche de Charcuterie.
Bar Tontine is open Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 10 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome at the bar, but reservations are recommended for dining.

GREAT BITES
THAT MOST FLAVORFUL TIME OF YEAR
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
If ever there was a time of year that is known for flavor and food, it would be the holiday season. Between Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas; from endless home parties to corporate holiday parties to galas for non-profits and evertything in-between, November and December are notoriously packed with incredibly full and flavorful fare. Whether you love the traditional tastes and smells of the season, or are looking for something more contemporary, the holiday season will set your palate on a journey that can only be described as Yummo!
This year, traditional flavors are trending heavily as people look more toward comfort fare that reminds them of better times. Understandable in an election year that is wrought with negativity. In the spirit of unity and tradition, I thought a few yummy classic recipes as well as some tips and tricks might help you best this festive season.
SP’S
BACON BOURBON MEATBALLS
I think meatballs as an hors d’oeuvres are underrated. They can be an incredibly convenient format to serve some very powerful flavors that satisfy your guest’s stomach. For this holiday, I want to give you something different, but that has deep flavors.
Ingredients
• 8 bacon strips
• 4 tablespoons bourbon
• 1/2 medium sweet onion
• 1 lb ground beef
• 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
• 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley
• 1 large egg
• 1 teaspoon chili powder
• 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
• 1 cup barbecue sauce
• 1/2 cup water
Preparation
Place the raw bacon into a food processor for about one minute or until it is finely ground up. Add in the onion and process until onion is finely chopped and mixed in. Spoon the bacon/onion mixture into large bowl. Add ground beef, breadcrumbs, parsley, egg, chili powder, smoked paprika and salt. Stir to combine. Using either your hands (rolling them in the palm of your hand), or a tablespoon scoop, make about 24 1-inch meatballs.
Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Place the meatballs into the saucepan and cook, turning every couple minutes to ensure all sides cook evenly. Cook for about 8-10 minutes until fully cooked. Remove the meatballs and set aside. Remove the pan from the heat and pour out the excess grease. Add the barbecue sauce, water and bourbon to the same saucepan and return to heat. Stir the sauce together. Add in the meatballs and allow them to simmer in the sauce for at least 10 minutes.
SEAN-PATRICK’S SOFT
GINGERBREAD COOKIES
I love gingerbread—ever since I was a little boy. My favorite format is in soft gingerbread cookies as they melt in your mouth, leaving a slight tingling sensation on your palate.
Ingredients
• 2 tablespoons white sugar for rolling
• 1 cup white sugar
• 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
• 2 ½ teaspoons ground ginger
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• ½ teaspoon ground cloves
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• ¾ cup butter or margarine, softened
• 1 large egg
• ¼ cup molasses
• 1 tablespoon water
• Optional: White icing pen to paint the borders of the cookie
Preparation
Preheat the oven to 350-degrees. Place 2 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl; set aside.
Sift together flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a bowl. Beat butter and remaining 1 cup sugar in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, then stir in molasses and water. Gradually stir the sifted ingredients into the molasses mixture until well combined. Use floured hands to shape dough into 24 walnutsized balls. Roll each ball in the reserved sugar until coated. Place the balls onto two ungreased cookie sheets, about 2-inches apart, and flatten (you can use the bottom of a glass to flatten the cookies).
Bake in the oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes before transfering to a wire rack to cool completely.
TIPS & TRICKS FOR HOLIDAY COOKING
Whether you are hosting just a friend or family member for a holiday meal or having dozens of people over to your home for a holiday party, we put together some tips and tricks to help you navigate the season in your kitchen.
• Food safety is paramount during the holiday season. Especially when it comes to cooking meat. Remember to make sure that any meat you are preparing, be it a turkey, a ham or a roast, is fully defrosted before doing anything else. The worst mistake you can make is to begin cooking a partially frozen turkey for Thanksgiving dinner as it will not cook properly and you will have likely made at least a guest or two sick. Speaking of which, remember that a meat thermometer was invented for a reason. Most of the ones on the market today are incredibly accurate to ensure your guests’ safety. You also want to make sure that you ask your guests ahead of time if they have any food sensitivities or allergies.
• Organization is key! When hosting a holiday event of any kind, the last thing you want to do is run to the store to pick up an ingredient you forgot… or a last minute substitute for something that doesn’t work out in the kitchen. Anytime I have guests over for a meal, a party or just for a cocktail, I put together a list of ingredients needed and what store I need to get them from.
• Often guests bring gifts to the host as a thank you for having them over. I like to return the favor in kind by providing my guests with the gift of leftovers. It not only helps to empty out the refrigerator, so you aren’t throwing food out after it has expired, but it also serves as a reminder for your guests of the wonderful meal and memories, you shared. I have yet to run into a guest that came to my home that didn’t appreciate this.
• Sometimes simpler is better. When you have many guests coming to your home for a meal, a party or even just drop in to say hi, we all want it to be the best party ever. However, that is how mistakes, and poorly prepared food, can happen. The more guests you have, the simpler you need to keep logistics and dishes being served.
The feedback on our Spirits of the City programming has been incredible. However, given all of the promotion during the holiday season, we felt that we needed to table this section (pun intended) until the New Year. But, we also didn’t want to leave our readers without the ability to imbibe during this most wonderful time of year! So, here are a few recipes from me and some of my dear friends like Oishii Sake and Brooklyn Gin.
SP’S SEMI-TRADITIONAL EGG NOG
Not all Egg Nog recipes are created equally. I developed this recipe a few years ago with three alcohol profiles to help bolster the flavor, and the effect. Traditional egg nog usually calls for brandy or cognac and rum. I added the bourbon to help enhance the nutmeg and vanilla profiles, which complements the cinnamon beautifully!
Ingredients
• 6 eggs
• 1 cup white sugar
• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
• ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, divided
• 2 cups whipping cream
• 2 cups milk
• ¾ cup brandy, chilled
• ½ cup spiced rum (I use Captain Morgan)
• 2 tablespoons of Bourbon (Heaven’s Door recommended)
Preparation
Beat eggs with an electric mixer on medium speed until very frothy, 2 to 3 minutes. Gradually beat in sugar, vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg. Stir in cream, milk, brandy, rum and bourbon. Cover and chill before serving. Sprinkle the remaining nutmeg on top of each cocktail as you serve.
OISHII SAKE PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE
BROOKLYN GIN’S BEE’S KNEES
Whenever I have guests over for a meal, I put together different cocktails, beverages and aperitifs for the various courses as it helps to not only compliment the meal, but it can also be a way to refresh your guests’ palalates for the next course. That is why I chose this cocktail from my friend Joe Santos’ Brooklyn Gin. It’s a great cocktail to serve as your guests arrive. The citric acid from the lemon juice and botanicals in the gin can help cleanse the palate.
Ingredients
• 2 oz Brooklyn Gin
• ¾ oz fresh lemon juice
• ¾ oz honey syrup (2:1 honey and warm water)
Preparation
Pour all ingredients into mixing tin and shake with ice. Strain into rocks glass with ice. Garnish with a fresh lemon slice.
While egg nog and other traditional holiday cocktails are great, I do try to pair traditional meals like this with something unique that helps to enhance the experience. My friend Buzzy Sklar, who owns Oishii Sake, an American-made Sake, was raving about a latte he has a recipe for that I thought would be perfect to pair with dessert for a traditional Thanksgiving.
Ingredients
• 2 oz Oishii Cloudy Sake
• 4 oz brewed coffee
• 1 oz pumpkin spice syrup
• 2 oz steamed milk
• Whipped cream and a pinch of pumpkin spice for garnish Preparation
In a glass, combine Oishii sake, brewed coffee, and pumpkin spice syrup. Top with steamed milk. Garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and a pinch of pumpkin spice
2024 has been a flavor packed year for Great Bites. All thanks to our readers. Here’s to a delicious and safe Holiday Season for all! Bon Appetit!

MUSICALS WITH A BITE
R
This intricate story melds Mexican cartels, musical numbers, sex changes, and more into a flick that drew raves at the Cannes Film Festival and has taken the festival circuit by storm. Together, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Karla Sofia Gascon will keep you guessing, enthralled, excited, and adoring of this audacious film from the mind of Jacques Audard.
RED ONE
PG-13
WICKED PG
The beloved Broadway musical Wicked is finally arriving on the big screen! With Cynthia Erivo in the role of Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, playing two witches from The Wizard of Oz, whose stories are told in a way that would have surprised L. Frank Baum, this ambitious undertaking is only the first part of the story, with the second due to arrive in November 2025.
Is the world ready for another Christmas classic? Ask Red One director Jake Kasdan and he’s sure to say “Yes,” having rounded up an all-star cast for this comedic action adventure all about the time Santa Claus was kidnapped and held for ransom. SCIENCE-FICTION FAVORITES
DUNE:
PROPHECY
Max
Dune fans will find an origin story in this prequel story set 10,000 years before the events that happen in the story created by Frank Herbert. Following the origin story of the Bene Gesserit, a sisterhood of women whose power is an important force in the world of Dune. Emily Watson and Olivia Williams star, with the ever-reliable Mark Strong lending his gravitas to the proceedings.
CROSS
Prime Video
STAR WARS: SKELETON CREW
Disney+
This new chapter in the Star Wars saga is designed to continue the stories told in the time of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, but with a distinct appeal to both the tweener set. It stars Jude Law and Kerry Condon, but really centers on four young kids whose adventures in the galaxy far, far away seem awfully familiar. That’s because the creators love Spielberg and have filled this fun adventure series with tons of reference to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and beyond.
CHILLER THRILLERS
Aldis Hodge takes on the role of homicide detective Alex Cross in this new series based on the novels of James Paterson, played by Morgan Freeman on the big screen. This series digs even deeper into the minds of the killers Cross is tracking across the streets of Washington, D.C.; the plot of this first season may just remind you to lock your doors and stay off the streets! Isaiah Mustafa, Ryan Eggold, Alona Tal, and Johnny Ray round out the cast.
A MAN ON THE INSIDE Netflix
Four years since The Good Place ended, Ted Danson and show creator Michael Schur are teaming up again, this time in a comedic crime series that taps a retiree into becoming a private investigator. He’s looking to solve crimes inside a nursing home, which doesn’t sound all that funny, but these two creative minds know just how to keep our attention. Stephanie Beatriz and Kerry O’Malley bring some younger energy into the story.
THE DAY OF THE JACKAL
Peacock
Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne brings an old favorite back to a new audience in this series based on the Frederick Forsyth novel about a chameleon-like assassin only known as The Jackal. A real original of its time in the 1970s, this may be a story that’s been told once too often (think Killing Eve), but with Redmayne in the lead, it’s got a lot going for it. Lashana Lynch costars as the British agent determined to bring him to justice, a nice twist on the original story.

When the dog appeared, the sitter thought Andy would know what to do. Indeed, Andy recognizes Murphy, who the Carpenters fostered before the dog went home with BJ Bremer and his mother. BJ wanted to learn all he could about caring for Murphy, which made Andy like him immediately.
When Andy goes to take Murphy back to the Bremers, though, instead of the happy reunion, he finds BJ’s mother in tears. It turns out Murphy ran off…after BJ was arrested for murder. Andy had hoped for a quiet Christmas vacation, but he likes Murphy’s family, and his golden retriever, Tara, likes Murphy, so he can’t resist getting involved. The case isn’t as simple as Andy thought it would be, though, with BJ suspected of murdering one of his professors. Oy! to the world. Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: She loves Christmas. For a decade she’s hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a best seller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach.
But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkah’s not magical. It’s not merry. It’s not Christmas. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachel’s determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemy—Jacob Greenberg.
Though Rachel and Jacob haven’t seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkah—and Jacob—in a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze.
JOHN O’HURLEY
IT’S A DOGGIE, DOG WORLD FOR THIS ACTOR
By Ilyssa Panitz
For over 23 years, John O’Hurley has spent his Thanksgiving in the doghouse, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Luckily for him, it’s all part of a day’s work and a job he loves discussing, especially in this exclusive interview with our sister magazine, Pet Lifestyles Magazine. O’Hurley, best known for his role as John Peterman in the NBC series Seinfeld and Dancing with the Stars, has been co-hosting The National Dog Show alongside David Frei, the dean of dog show commentators, since The National Dog Show premiered on the Peacock Network in 2002, following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
O’Hurley, who has had dogs since he was four years old, tells us, “The National Dog Show is a family-oriented program that appeals to everyone. Okay, maybe not cats, but it’s in a wonderful slot. After the Parade and before football. So, as I jokingly say, “Dogs until two.”
As of 2023, over 25 million people reportedly watched The National Dog Show, where 2,000 dogs representing 205 recognized breeds by the American Kennel Club competed for Best of Breed, First in Group, and the coveted title of Best in Show.
PREPARATION IS KEY
For his part, O’Hurley makes it his business to school himself on the topic of dogs by conducting extensive research and studying his notes before the cameras start rolling. “I have to do my homework,” O’Hurley tells us, “Because each of the dogs is distinct, they have different functions, they have historical experiences, and the judges base their decisions on written specifications I need to talk about and describe to our audience.”
How are the contestants chosen from a pool of millions? Regarding the audition process, a seasoned expert panel views the applicants vying for a spot. O’Hurley says, “There are thousands of dog shows across the country that are AKC certified and where people are constantly showing their dogs. To be a considered candidate on The National Dog Show,” O’Hurley says, “Dogs must win their breed category.”
There are seven categories: Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. You can learn more about each by visiting The National Dog Show’s website and clicking “The Seven Groups” under Event/Vendor Info. To find which specific group your dog falls under, look for the “Meet the Breeds” tab, where you will see a complete list identifying each breed.
THE SHOW MUST GO ON
Like any television series or Hollywood movie set, a lot goes on behind the scenes. At The National Dog Show, for example, dogs take part in an all-day priming process because each dog must be well groomed. The dogs also need a proper haircut since their overall appearance is part of their score. When picking a winner, O’Hurley explains, “It is not about the cutest dog but what is the perfect representation of what that breed should be.”
Away from the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Philadelphia, where the show takes place and more than 20,000 people attend every year, O’Hurley likes to be at home playing with his two rescues, Charlotte and Mia. They keep him active all day long because, as he puts it, “they have a little bit of terrier in them.”

JENNIFER ESPOSITO
DOGS ARE MORE THAN MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY
By Ilyssa Panitz
Actress Jennifer Esposito is best known for her roles as a no-nonsense Detective on Blue Bloods, NCIS, and Law & Order: SVU. But these days, she can be found behind the camera for her latest project, Fresh Kills, a film she headlines, wrote and directed for Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
“When I wasn’t able to find satisfying roles,” Esposito tells our sister magazine, Pet Lifestyle Magazine, “It motivated me to create a script and pitch it to Hollywood.” Esposito finds the work fulfilling, and she credits her dogs with ingraining a permanent smile on her face and bringing laughter into her New York home.
In this interview, Esposito reveals why her dogs are in a league of their own and how they pulled this Hollywood star out of tough times when no one else could.
Tell us more about how being a dog Mom. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have dogs. Dogs are the best things on earth. I would take dogs over anybody, and my husband would agree.
How long have you been a dog Mom?
I begged my mom when I was a kid to get a dog, and she did. When I was on my own at 18, I got a Golden Retriever named Frankie Beans, who I describe as the one and only love of my life. I had him for 17 years, and he was with me through everything. When Frankie Beans got sick, I found a 13-pound Goldendoodle named Goose, and now I have him and a Sheepadoodle named Gus, who is 85 pounds and a sweetheart.
How did you decide what breed was right for you?
I recommend you do your research before getting a dog. The only time I didn’t do much research was when I got my Sheepadoodle. Here is something people should know: there is a herding aspect to them, at least with Gus there is, because he tries to herd the squirrels in the yard, and when they don’t come to him, he gets frustrated. It is hilarious to watch.
What other vital considerations should be on our radar?
People must understand dogs are more than cute members of the family. You must understand what the dog is about, what the dog needs, and how a dog fits into your life because having a dog is a responsibility and obligation. Yes, it will bring you so much joy, but it is not a decision you should make on a whim.
What are some of the significant differences with all your dogs? Goose is my protector. He may be only 13 pounds, but if anyone comes near me, it’s like he’s thinking, “Don’t even think about it!” Goose likes to have his bed underneath mine. We call it his apartment. He loves being cozy underneath there. He is also extremely intuitive. If I shed a tear in silence, he senses it, immediately jumps up on my bed and lays on my chest. He is the sweetest little man.
What do you like to do with your dogs when you are not on a television set?
We like to play in the yard, be in nature, or go for a long walk on the beach. They love to run, catch sticks and stroll on our favorite hiking trail. When they sense I want to go to the park or beach, they start running around the house and get all excited.
Dogs are reportedly known to help lower stress. Do you agree? I have had a lot of stress over the years and Frankie Beans was there. At one point in my life, I got sick with Celiac Disease, and it was Frankie Beans who would sit with me on the floor when I was in so much pain. He never left my side or walked to the door to signal he needed to go outside. He just stayed with me, and I credit that dog with saving my life. Goose is like that too, which is why I get so much joy from my animals.
Fresh Kills starring Jennifer Esposito and Sopranos alum Annabella Sciorra is now airing on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. The full interview is available in the PAWliday Edition of Pet Lifestyles Magazine

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER
JACQUES TORRES: THE SWEET JOURNEY TO SUCCESS
By Patricia Canole
Few names shine as brightly as Jacques Torres. Known affectionately as “Mr. Chocolate,” Torres has revolutionized the art of chocolate making in America, bringing European craftsmanship and innovation to new heights. His journey from a small town in southern France to becoming one of New York City’s most celebrated chocolatiers is a testament to passion, skill, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
It was in France, surrounded by the rich culinary traditions of Provence, that Torres first developed his love for food and cooking. At the tender age of 15, Torres began an apprenticeship at a small pastry shop, laying the foundation for an illustrious culinary career.
Torres’ talent and dedication quickly became apparent. By age 26, he had earned the prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman of France) medal in pastry, becoming the youngest chef ever to receive this honor. This accolade opened doors for Torres, setting him on a path that would eventually lead him across the Atlantic to the United States.
THE EARLY YEARS
Torres accepted an offer to become the Executive Pastry Chef at Le Cirque, one of New York City’s most renowned restaurants. For 11 years, Torres dazzled diners with his innovative desserts and chocolate creations. While there, Torres honed his skills and introduced him to the American palate and the unique challenges and opportunities of working in the United States.
During his tenure at Le Cirque, Torres focused more intensely on chocolate. He experimented with flavors, textures, and techniques, pushing the boundaries of what was possible with this versatile ingredient. Here, Torres developed the signature style that would later define his brand.
BRANCHING OUT
In 2000, Torres took a leap of faith and opened his first chocolate shop in Brooklyn. Jacques Torres Chocolate was born, marking the beginning of a new era in American chocolate making. Torres’ vision was clear: to create premium, handcrafted chocolates using only the finest ingredients and traditional European techniques. “I needed a change after 25 years into my career, but I also wanted to translate my love of working with chocolates that are loved by all ages, genders, and races into something bigger,” he told us.
What set Torres apart was his commitment to quality and innovation. He was one of the first chocolatiers in the United States to make his chocolates from cocoa beans, controlling the entire process from bean to bar. This approach allowed him to ensure the highest quality and to experiment with different flavor profiles and textures.
Torres’ chocolates quickly gained a following. His classic bonbons, filled with ganache from exotic ingredients like passion fruit and Sichuan peppercorn, became instant favorites. But it was perhaps his hot chocolate that truly captured New York’s heart. Rich, velvety, and intensely flavorful, Torres’ hot chocolate became a legend, drawing crowds even on the hottest summer days.
EXPANSION & INNOVATION
As Jacques Torres Chocolate grew in popularity, so did its footprint. Torres opened additional locations across New York City, each becoming a chocolate-lover destination. He also expanded his product line, introducing his famous chocolate chip cookies, which many consider among New York’s best.
He told us about one of his most enjoyable experiences as a TV host. During his time at Le Cirque, Jacques released a 52-episode public television series, Dessert Circus with Jacques Torres. He also hosted a television series, Chocolate with Jacques Torres, on the Food Network for three years. Currently, Torres co-hosts Nailed It! on Netflix. Now in season seven, the show has been nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards, including three for the Outstanding Competition Program, and has led to several international spinoffs. In 2023, Jacques co-hosted Nailed It! Big Baking Challenge, a ten-episode series for Netflix. He has also made countless guest appearances on many food shows and daytime programs.
THE MAN BEHIND THE CHOCOLATE
Jacques Torres’ impact on the world of chocolate cannot be overstated. He has played a crucial role in elevating the quality and perception of American-made chocolates, proving that the United States could compete with European chocolatiers on the world stage. His emphasis on using high-quality ingredients and traditional techniques has influenced a new generation of American chocolatiers, contributing to a renaissance in artisanal chocolate making across the country.
Torres told us that to make good chocolate, you need good cocoa beans, which are then transformed into chocolates with proper techniques and procedures. “As a whole, good chocolate is one that you, the consumer, will love. I can describe and explain the taste of chocolate as much as I want, but if you don’t like it, you don’t like it. Good chocolate is a personal decision.”
Beyond his technical innovations, Torres has also helped change how Americans think about and consume chocolate. By introducing consumers to premium, handcrafted chocolates with complex flavor profiles, he has helped to develop a more sophisticated chocolate palate among American consumers. “You can mention that association of flavor is something that I have done for many years with a history of cooking and making chocolates,” he continued. “There are classic flavors like chocolate and orange and some that are a little more innovative like lemon and chocolate. I consider spices, exotic fruits, and exciting combinations that surprise the consumer.”
THE POWER OF PASSION
Torres’ journey from a young apprentice in France to America’s “Mr. Chocolate” is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and innovation. Does he have a favorite? “Every chocolate I have on my menu is there for a reason, so if there is chocolate that I don’t like—I remove it. They’re all delicious,” he told us, laughing.
Jacques Torres has built a successful business and left an indelible mark on the world of chocolate through his unwavering commitment to quality and his willingness to push boundaries.

MY NEW YORK STORY
CHARLI HENDLER, FOUNDER OF AUGUST BLACK
By Shaye Price | Photography by Margaret Rose
August Black launched in 2008 as the only interior design firm catering exclusively to men. It was met with great acclaim, and women and couples began to knock on the door. Due to the growing demand for high-end residential projects, August Black proudly launched August Black Home. This led to August Black Baby, accommodating busy parents and growing families by creating custom, one-of-a-kind baby rooms.
Following the successful completion of numerous hotel, office, and restaurant projects, August Black Commercial and Hospitality entered the mix. Last but certainly not least, August Black is proud of its exceptional Staging division. New York City-based August Black provides full-service interior design and project management services for residential, commercial, hospitality, restaurant, and lounge projects in Manhattan.
August Black owner Charli (Hantman) Hendler aims to achieve timeless spaces with distinction and functionality. Charli has designed and managed several large-scale hospitality projects at the Ritz Carlton Hotels and the Ritz Carlton Private Residences. Known for creating unique interiors that reimagine the possibilities of mixing modern and traditional, her classic and edgy designs are inspired by fashion, art, and travel. She has designed several celebrity-client homes, and her work has been featured in Curbed NY, Core NYC, and numerous publications.
We met with Charli recently to find out more about August Black. Here’s what we found.
Share a childhood memory that sparked your interest in interior design
I grew up in a house that was constantly changing in design. My parents always saw new ways to make our house more functional or visually attractive, so they would add or knock down walls depending on their preferences. I always felt drawn to the process. I would join them in design meetings or walkthroughs with the architect and frequent showrooms while selecting fabrics, wallpaper, and furnishings.
Can you describe your process of understanding a client’s vision and translating it into a design?
I always survey clients to get a substantial sense of what they like and dislike. I share photos, color ideas, fabrics, and links to get immediate reactions and feedback, which is always very telling. Then I put together an inspirational document based on these findings to propose an overall visual direction for each room, creating a “flow” throughout the entirety of the space. When people realize custom ideas are being made just for them, they are often blown away and cannot wait to see them come to life.

Describe a project that best represents the August Black Interior Design signature style.
My “Manhattan Cheeky” project at 36 Sutton Place South perfectly exemplifies the fun and sophisticated nature of August Black’s signature style. By transforming furniture and closets that turn into home offices or stroller closets, we created an apartment with tons of hidden layers and valuable features to help these busy Upper East Side parents maintain a clutter-free home that they can also work in happily. Balancing color, pattern, and texture, this design brings a young yet decade-less vibe to the once-considered “older” neighborhood.
Conversely, my “Anything But Boring Beige” project at 147 Waverly Place symbolizes August Black’s more subdued tonal signature, incorporating tons of texture, layers, and unique silhouettes. A breath of fresh air in the center of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, this design aimed at maximizing all this space has to offer while layering thoughtful [as well as durable] details and ambient lighting throughout to create an elevated and inviting environment, while keeping a calming feel in contrast to the busy city outside.
How do you go from initial concept to final execution?
Brainstorming based on this feedback is where I begin to put concepts to paper. I outline these ideas briefly with visuals and present them to the client. It is intended to inspire and excite them to decide on high-level details. I then move on to the fundamentals. We see what is logistically possible, starting with scaled floor plans and elevation drawings. Then comes the actual design process, based on the budget and fundamental components we have put in place. Once furnishings and materials are approved, we provide purchase proposals. With all timeframes solidified, we provide a seamless installation schedule with all trades involved to be scheduled accordingly.
The right medium, colors, shape, and scale all contribute to bringing a room to life. Art should enhance the other elements in a room and can truly create strong visual interest in sparking conversation.
What’s next for August Black? Are there any new ventures or design territories you’re excited to explore?
August Black has exciting collaborations and partnerships that we can’t wait to share! I love collaborating with various trades in the industry, customizing capsule collections that speak directly to our clientele and beyond to capitalize on their functional and aesthetic needs. No one knows better than designers what clients are looking for first-hand. We can curate something distinctive by working with artisans and trades in the industry.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career?
The challenges I encounter daily are often related to elements beyond my control. This includes item delays, damages, and poor communication from industry vendors. We have established excellent relationships with our trades sector, and together, we collaborate on how to circumvent these uncontrollable issues that arise creatively. We take all necessary steps to work with the vendor or manufacturer to rectify any problems, small or large, on time with the best outcome wherever possible.
However, I’ve found that managing my client’s expectations is the best way to handle these issues. I am very communicative with my clients. When issues that need to be shared with clients arise, I find providing them with relevant information upfront is the best way to avoid any miscommunication, most importantly with solutions at hand.
TIME OUT WITH…
CHUKS COLLINS, FASHION DESIGNER
By Pamela Smythe Woods
Designer, multidisciplinary visual artist, and African American creative force extraordinaire Chuks Collins makes fashion personal. Recently, he presented his Spring 2025 looks at New York Fashion Week. He showed The Nné SS25 Collection, conceived as an Ode to Mama, with a parade of magazine-cover beauties appearing on the catwalk.
Famed supermodel Maria Borges dramatically opened the show in a white architectural silhouette accessorized with a gold neckpiece and bustier. A coterie of contemporary individuals followed on the runway, showing off Collins’ superb aesthetic. They represented diverse ages, shapes, sizes, and colors, each bringing personal uniqueness to Collins’ future-forward designs.
DESIGNS WITH LOVE
With looks full of character, exuding power, and presence, Chuks Collins delivered a seamless rendering of traditional African elements with modern Western style; bold shapes and vibrant colors lent themselves as much to voluminous silhouettes as to slim body-hugging ones. UK-born, Nigeria-raised Collins’ design sensibility stems from his love and commitment to honoring women, a heartfelt narrative.
The core of his inspiration is women who care deeply about him, particularly his mother and his grandmother. His priority is paying homage to all the women who make his creative, aesthetically brilliant world go round. His loyalty to women who share his vision goes beyond the immediate family. This season, he curated five South African female designers who showed for the first time at NYFW.
Drawing inspiration from his global roots and education, Chuks Collins creates an aesthetic that defies categorization. Each design embodies elegant, unexpected originality that sets it apart. Collins counts The Jonas Brothers, Jimmy Fallon, Thuso Mbedu, Quincy, Trevor Jackson, and Terence Nance among celebrity fans who have worn his looks, showing his creativity off with exceptional allure.
Today, the designer bridges the gap between African and Western fashion. He believes sustainable solutions should not compromise style or quality, so he combines longevity with organic and recycled materials that enhance the glamorous looks he presents. Social sustainability is his mantra.
CONTEMPORARY & ORIGINAL
Watching each look at the Chuks Collins show, each one more inventive and strikingly original than the next is to see his brief elevation of his African heritage ebb into glorious contemporary Western fashion. No wonder many of the “celebrity guests” at the show were designers, themselves incredibly impactful fashion voices, Nicole Miller, Nanette Lepore, and Teddy Von Ranson among them. Also in attendance was passionate maternal health advocate and founder of global pregnancy health initiative Every Mother Counts, Christy Turlington Burns, a “supermodel” herself but simply a guest at Chuks’ show.
He says his show “celebrates the essence of motherhood and the multifaceted nature of femininity.” True. But Chuks’ collection is for the most sophisticated moms among us. Collins works with the striking colors of an African sea and sky. His palette is a direct reference to his African heritage, as are the silhouettes. Although his collection does speak to his Nigerian roots, his looks across continents retain a powerful contemporary relevance.
Each of his designs is a hybrid, a beautiful reflection of his connection to Nigeria yet a powerful mirror for contemporary Western design. The result is a stunning collection that is surprisingly emotional and, as a result, unforgettable. Most importantly, Chuks Collins wants us all to understand his gratitude for the opportunity to keep creating and expressing himself through his work. This collection resonates with “healing;” it is, he says, a “homecoming.” So welcome home, Chuks Collins. I am honored to have you back again.

THE FINAL WORD
THE NYPD IS FILLED WITH HEROES
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
The rollercoaster ride of public sentiment for or against the NYPD over the last 30 years has been exhausting. From the turbulence of the mid-70s through the mid-90s to the trials and tribulations of the pandemic, the New York City Police Department has had its share of the good, the bad and the ugly. And in my short, but certainly vivid, 48 years on this mudball, I have met many of New York’s Finest who I am proud to have called friends or colleagues, including Commissioners, Chiefs of the Department, Captains and all the way down the line to the neighborhood foot patrol.
When I was a little boy growing up in Manhattan, we were taught to respect the police. We were told that the police were here to protect the public. There was never a question of that from much of the population of this city. Yes, back then you still had a fair number of bad apples that did some very bad things including corruption, acting with racial or religious bias, and the like. But the vast majority of the NYPD has always been honest, forthright and willing to put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve the People. To that young version of myself, the thought of being an NYPD officer was an honor, especially being sworn to duty with the most respected police department on Earth. And I still feel that way today.
When I was a kid, most of the NYPD were of Irish, Italian, Jewish, Black, Hispanic, or Chinese heritage. Did that provide an opportunity for bad actors to do bad things? Yes. The majority of the department then were either black or white. There were not too many brown-skinned officers, nor were there too many Asian officers. That allowed certain people to allow their personal bias or hate to show through in some very egregious ways. Again, we are talking about a minority of folks within the department during a very different time period. Thankfully, the lion’s share of that has changed with today’s NYPD. The rank and file now includes cultures from all over the world, providing the largest police force in the country with a real understanding of global beliefs and behaviors. That has resulted in hate bias and gross neglect by our local law enforcement to dramatically drop since 1976.
During the pandemic, we saw accusations across the board of racial bias amongst the rank and file. That was a gross overstatement fueled by certain people that profited from disgraceful race baiting tactics, as well as inciting more reprehensible behaviors that led to record arrest numbers at the time. Then Bill de Blasio, the least liked, respected and trusted Mayor in NYC history, turned his back on the department. By either remaining silent against dangerous narratives being touted or echoing the rhetoric that the progressives were spewing at the time, de Blasio’s behavior and decisions, in my opinion, only fueled more bogus bias lawsuits to be filed against officers for doing nothing more than their job.
Of course, it didn’t help that de Blasio and then City Council Speaker Corey Johnson ordered the department to stop enforcing low-level crimes such as public urination and defecation, graffiti, public intoxication, retail theft under $900 (we all know how well that has worked out for the city since every product at Walgreens and CVS are now behind lock and key), etc.
Those decisions single-handedly increased crime exponentially as the pandemic took hold. Then the unthinkable happened; de Blasio actually emptied out the jails and prisons into our neighborhoods under the guise of “pandemic relief” to “protect” the prisoners from the virus. Um, a prison is THE literal definition of quarantine in that these people are segregated from the population. How did that make any sense? It didn’t. Compound this with disgraced former Governor and wishes-he-was-Mayor Andrew Cuomo’s bail reform and you have the perfect storm.
Yet despite all of that, the New York City Police Department’s members still put their lives on the line for our citizens and visitors, every single day. On September 11, they ran into the Towers that were collapsing to save lives. Every day, we see the police on the streets protecting the People. And it is a job that is more thankless than not. That is the real crime.
The Final Word: The NYPD are here to protect and serve the People. But they are not just law enforcement. They are members of our community. They are part of our families. They are our brothers and sisters. Isn’t it time we started acting like it?
Please join me in wishing our brothers and sister in blue, a very Happy, Healthy, and Safe Holiday Season.
