New year. New focus. Same passion. Pet Lifestyles Magazine is proud to declare and celebrate 2025 as the Year of Best Friends Animal Society and their No-Kill Nation goal!

To celebrate, just for 2025, each edition of the magazine will have a new “Best Friends Animal Society” section that focuses solely on the iconic animal welfare organization, its network partners of rescues and shelters, as well as their various Lifesaving Centers. We are renaming our Rescue section to Save Them All to reflect our commitment to supporting Best Friends’ mission and No-Kill Nation goal in 2025.

It is because of Best Friends’ passion and dedication to “Save Them All” that we are introducing this new section, and the rename, for 2025. I have received a few questions about this endeavor already, so I wanted to tackle this in the upfront; this is not a paid partnership. Best Friends Animal Society is not paying us to create this effort. We are doing this because it is the right thing to do and because we believe so strongly in both their mission, and their efforts to bring the United States to No-Kill status.

In 2025, our readers will also meet new official partners of the magazine who will provide expert content and advice for your furrever ones. We will also introduce new advertisers and sponsors who we are working with to help increase adoptions through events and promotional programming.

REVOLUTIONIZING HEALTHCARE

PHYSICIANS BRING NUTRITION TO THE FOREFRONT OF MEDICAL CARE

Two hundred years ago this year, French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, “Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are.” And since 1825, several notable philosophers and doctors have used this sage phrase in their own words to communicate that what you eat is connected to your happiness, health, and well-being. But it wasn’t until the Roaring 20’s that American nutritionist Victor Lindlahrthe used the catchphrase, “You are what you eat” in an advertising campaign that ran through the Great Depression. That phrase has now become part of the vernacular.

In 2025, “you are what you eat” has become a serious problem because of lack of nutrition training in medical schools, which oddly enough, has further regressed in the past decade. The proliferation of processed foods in the American diet without doctors who consider food as a significant factor in health is spiraling out of control. In the 1990s, the naturals industry came to the rescue by creating the nutritional supplement sector. Though supplements are meant to help shore up bodily nutrient needs, it was a consumer-beware situation lacking science, oversightand worst of all, physicians to guide the way.

So what is the solution?

One example is Ziv Haklili, a successful digital entrepreneur, who could no longer ignore the glaring problem in the health and wellness industry: a sea of supplements with flashy marketing but little scientific backing. He decided it was time for someone to create products that truly delivered on their promises and developed a new trilogy approach to health, one rooted in evidence-based nutrition, appropriate doses of active ingredients, and physician collaboration. His approach harkens back to the fact that doctors in medical school get less than 20 hours of nutrition training. Despite this, he sensed that somewhere out there he could find reputable physicians who include nutrition in their practice. He found six prominent doctors from different medical disciplines across the nation, who interestingly enough had educated themselves beyond their medical training to become experts on the integrated art of nutritional science.

Hatching this 3-part plan was the beginning; he needed to overcome the crowded supplement space and his limited experience in the consumer packaged goods sector. Ziv turned to a trusted childhood friend who had spent over a decade disrupting sector after sector with impressive digital prowess. With their conjoined respective strengths, 1MD Nutrition® was created in 2016.

“For years, Western medicine has treated nutrition as an afterthought,” said Haklili. Even though the National Academy of Sciences had recommended at least 25 hours of nutrition education since 1985, medical schools have regressed. By 2010, only about a quarter of schools met this modest target—down from 38% just six years earlier. This gap seems especially striking when considering how healthconscious our society has become and the natural products industry now worth over $320 billion.

Well aware the company needed to vastly set itself apart from the many supplement brands on the market, Ziv and Ben brought the six like-minded and well-respected doctors together as the scientific advisory board for 1MD Nutrition. The doctors, a brain neurologist, cardiologist, urologist, rheumatologist, immunologist and gastroenterologist, then developed nutritional supplements to address the common problems in their areas of expertise.

In short, 1MD Nutrition was founded on the premise that the industry can do better through evidence-based nutrition. 1MD sets itself apart from the competition with an ethos guided by three principles:

• Prioritize Comprehensive Formulations: Focus on ingredients backed by robust, peer-reviewed clinical trials.

• Deliver Effective Dosages: Use of clinically validated amounts of active ingredients; formulas with the amounts that showed results in clinical studies (not just lots of all-hat, no-cattle-type marketing).

• Collaborate with Medical Experts: Partner with physicians who could lend their expertise in developing condition-specific supplements.

The first doctor to become part of the 1MD Nutrition team, was a 30-year veteran immunologist, Dr. Brian Greenberg, who had already formulated an immunity supplement for which he had sought a partner to find more extensive distribution. That product became ImmunityMD®, the first SKU that kicked off 1MD Nutrition’s 3-part mission and grew into a catalogue of 26 condition-specific physicianbacked products designed to bridge the gap between traditional medicine and nutrition science.

Though any brand can say their products are rigorously tested and celebrated for their quality and effectiveness, 1MD Nutrition backs up everything they do with trackable, high integrity verifications.

For example all products are crafted in GMP-certified facilities. GMP stands for Good Manufacturing Practices, and this certification indicates that a manufacturing facility adheres to the quality standards required to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of products. This certification is critical in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, cosmetics, and dietary supplements. GMP standards are enforced by regulatory authorities, such as the FDA in the United States, to ensure product safety and quality.

1MD Nutrition’s commitment to excellence has earned recognition from health experts, professional athletes, global media outlets - and esteemed institutions. 1MD Nutrition is a trusted partner of The Arthritis Foundation. The brand has been the recipient of some of the most significant health industry awards such as the Academy Award of the naturals industry, the NEXTY, reader’s choice-driven Newsweek Best New Product Award and accolades from the Healthcare & Pharmaceutical, Delicious Living, alive and Taste for Life Awards. Social proof from millions of customers is shared publicly and reportage from Forbes, CNN, MSN and the top health industry trades is a constant response. Professional athletes from global soccer champions to world-renowned skiers and tennis phenoms are fans of 1MD products.

The unique relationship between the doctors and founders, and what that collaboration and dedication has delivered, is what really compels me to have written this story.

Think about this: with all of the health remedies on the market and the flood of supplements now available with the simple click of a mouse, are we any better than we were 20 years ago? Yes and no.

Science has advanced in so many areas that we were unable to tackle two decades ago. But many of these “solutions” don’t take into account the very thing that humans consume every single day, our food.

The decisions that people make as to what they consume and why can often lead to a string of health problems that were avoidable. So I again go back to how I started writing this story: “You are what you eat.”

1MD Nutrition has focused their resources on bringing evidence-based nutrition findings into their supplement development while ensuring the active ingredients in their products are in a dose that showed results in real clinical settings.

I find that comforting.

It dawns on this writer that at the end of the day, it is that unique relationship between founders and doctors in their development that really moves the needle. So we decided to dig a little deeper into the background of the six doctors who are responsible for the science behind these new supplements that have helped, according to sales data, over five million consumers improve their health. We also looked specifically at the products each doctor was primarily responsible for developing and what their true benefits are, as well as why that particular doctor likes the product.

DR. BRIAN GREENBERG, Immune Health

Dr. Brian Greenberg, the first of 1MD Nutrition’s medical scientific board, is a prominent immunologist, allergist, and pediatrician of 30 years. He has been dedicated to the science of alternative approaches to health problems since his early days in medical school.

It was a common sore in his mouth (likely due to the stresses of medical school) that first frustrated him with over-the-counter remedies and prescription medications that didn’t work for him. This sent him on a path to explore how scientific journals were reporting about alternative approaches, specifically a deep dive into the potential of probiotics.

Ironically, when Dr. Greenberg met Ziv Haklili, he had already been actively looking for help to distribute a nutritional supplement he developed to aid in immune support. Needless to say, fate had a different idea for Dr. Greenberg, who joined with five other doctors to help accelerate 1MD Nutrition’s development.

For the line that Dr. Greenberg had already developed, he performed extensive experimentation with various probiotic strains and natural ingredients, developing a unique combination that significantly improved immune system function. When Dr. Greenberg met Ziv through Nir Haklili, Ziv’s father, he learned about the philosophy of 1MD Nutrition® and their manufacturing principles that matched rigorous standards in GMP-certified facilities. It was this high level of manufacturing performance, as well as the philosophy of the company, that convinced him to join 1MD Nutrition and produce his immune formula.

“ImmunityMD® is the only immune system-supporting formula for lip, skin, and oral health that contains a proprietary blend of healthsupporting probiotics,” says Dr. Greenberg. “The blend of probiotics supports immune function by facilitating better absorption of nutrients in the gut. Nutraflora® Prebiotic supports the growth of beneficial bacteria at the core of your immune system.”

In tandem with 1MD Nutrition, Dr. Greenberg embarked on developing another nutritional supplement called BreatheMD™, which addresses the growing concern of respiratory health in the United States. The comprehensive formula combined key vitamins (C, D, and E), elderberry, zinc, chromium, L-cysteine, and marshmallow root with Pelargonium sidoides, a herb known to support immune and lung function.

Dr. Greenberg has a passion for cutting-edge protocols, especially given his long belief in alternative solutions to common ailments. His research and formulations integrate nutrition science and superfoods to create safe, effective supplements free from unnecessary chemicals or serious side effects.

Dr. Greenberg’s ultimate goal is to empower individuals to achieve optimal health through the combination of science and nature. Through his partnership with 1MD Nutrition®, he has introduced revolutionary supplements that are light years ahead of conventional approaches. Greenberg earned his medical degree from the University of Florida and completed his residency and fellowship in Pediatrics and Allergy & Clinical Immunology at UCLA. Practicing in Southern California, Dr. Greenberg has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Los Angeles Magazine.

Dr. Greenberg recommends BreatheMD™ and ImmunityMD®

BreatheMD: Promotes proper respiratory function and supports immune system health with high potency antioxidant vitamins C and E.. This product was the 2021 Taste for Life Immunity Essentials Award Winner for Best Lung Support!

ImmunityMD: Promotes optimal immune system health with clinically-studied dosages of 3 Key science-backed ingredients. The product contains 12 Billion CFUs of immune-supporting probiotics.

DR. DAVID KAHANA, Digestive Health

Digestive discomfort can be both challenging and humbling. Common issues like bloating, gas, or irregular bowel movements can strike unexpectedly, at times disrupting daily life and leaving you feeling out of control. Dr. David Kahana witnessed firsthand how such struggles affected his older brother, inspiring his passion for digestive health. That is what inspired him to pursue combining natural solutions with conventional medicine for the digestive field.

INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO MEDICINE

Dr. Kahana is focused on a combination of science and natural support ingredients; an integrative approach to health. “We created a new standard with real solutions that address American health concerns,” he said. “1MD Nutrition® formulates potent and effective nutritional supplements by sourcing the highest quality, research-informed ingredients.”

Feeling constrained by Western medicine’s focus on conditions rather than the whole person, Dr. Kahana pursued an education beyond the usual medical training to become a certified Physician Nutrition Specialist®

“I always felt boxed in by Western medicine,” said Dr. Kahana, “which seems more interested in focusing on the ailment rather than the person as a whole.” The desire to step out of the stereotypical four walls of traditional medicine provided the gastroenterologist with an alternative, nutrition-based solution that eventually led him to join 1MD Nutrition®.

Dr. Kahana’s work with the company focuses on identifying natural ingredients and herbal extracts worldwide to hopefully continue discovering alternative solutions. As such, Dr. Kahana collaborates with dieticians and nutritionists in development which has been integral to advancing research in the field. He is focused on developing lasting solutions for gastrointestinal issues while enhancing the body’s natural recovering capabilities. As a matter of fact, Dr. Kahana’s research on nutrient assimilation, constipation, and probiotics has been published in peer-reviewed journals and his current focus is on supporting healthy colon and liver function.

Working with 1MD Nutrition®, Dr. Kahana helped develop supplements beyond conventional offerings that enhance digestive function using natural, clinically studied ingredients. In particular, Dr. Kahana uses digestive enzymes that promote optimal digestion and mitigate the negative effects of poorly digested food, along with specialized formulas that target everyday environmental threats, promote gut recovery process, and strengthen the intestinal barrier. In other words, proper nutrition can be a source of effective support for a healthy gastrointestinal system and function.

The blend of probiotics and prebiotics that 1MD Nutrition® and Dr. Kahana is featured in several digestive products that address nutritional gaps, stress, as well as environmental factors that can add to these gastrointestinal problems. This blend also helps to promote healthy gut function and maintain immunity. Having a physician involved with formulations like these is where nutritional supplements can make a significant difference. And for Dr. Kahana, that is the holy grail of digestive health support.

Dr. David Kahana is board-certified in Pediatrics and Gastroenterology by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and in Medical Nutrition by the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists. As President of the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists, Dr. Kahana trained at UCLA and Chicago, Minnesota, and Israel before opening the Center for Digestive Health & Nutritional Excellence in Torrance, CA, in 2011. He serves on local and national committees and directs a medical nutrition clinic at the Ambulatory Care Network for Los Angeles County.

DR. HEATHER SHENKMAN, Interventional Cardiologist

Anyone who has had a physical knows that what you eat can have serious effects on your heart. As an example, the more trans fat that you consume, the higher the likelihood is that you will have reduced heart function. So it should come as no surprise that Dr. Shenkman was drawn to cardiology because healthy heart function remains one of the most critical parts of longevity, yet much of the nutritional decisions and lifestyle habits are ignored in clinical settings.

According to Dr. Shenkman, “As an interventional cardiologist, I strongly appreciate and understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for cardiovascular conditions. You can promote cardiovascular health by incorporating a healthy diet, regular exercise, stress management, and natural recovery into your daily life.”

While trained in complex cardiac procedures, Dr. Shenkman focuses on helping patients promote heart health through health support and maintenance. As an interventional cardiologist, she emphasizes the benefits of healthy lifestyle choices for cardiovascular health, especially nutrition.

Her approach combines traditional medical interventions with holistic wellness strategies. While acknowledging the critical role of medications in cardiology, Dr. Shenkman recognized a need for a more comprehensive approach to complement standard medical care. She believes Western medicine’s visible symptoms-focused approach should be expanded to address the bigger picture of cardiac health.

NUTRITIONAL SOLUTIONS

Having maintained a plant-based diet since 2005, Dr. Shenkman strongly advocates for plant-based nutrition, citing numerous studies demonstrating its benefits for heart function, “In cardiology, I saw a greater need for a more holistic approach to accompany standard medical care. Western medicine focuses on what we can see, and there is a bigger picture with cardiology.” This commitment to natural, nutrition-based solutions led to her joining 1MD Nutrition®.

Her expertise in lifestyle medicine and balanced nutrition informed the formulation of a very unique beet-forward CardioFitMD®, a comprehensive daily multivitamin in beverage form. CardioFit has won many accolades from Newsweek’s Product of the Year, the result of 10K readers’ opinions, Delicious Living’s Gold Consumers Choice for Favorite Functional Food and Taste for Life Best Heart Support Supplement award. Dr. Shenkman also is a strong advocate of CholestMD® and GlucoseMD®.

SATISFACTION & VISION

Dr. Shenkman finds the greatest reward in witnessing patients take control of their health and well-being. She believes that combining healthy lifestyle choices with an integrative approach to heart health can transform millions of lives. Through her work with 1MD Nutrition’s heart suite collection, she aims to provide comprehensive, naturally sourced solutions for optimal cardiac health.

Her overall vision emphasizes the integration of cardiovascular health promotion through nutrition, regular exercise, stress management, and natural health support practices. Dr. Shenkman advocates these lifestyle modifications as key strategies to maintain long-term cardiac health.

Dr. Heather Shenkman is a board-certified interventional cardiologist and elected Member at Large for the Medical Executive Committee of Valley Presbyterian Hospital. She completed a combined degree and six-year program at Albany Medical College in New York, graduating at the remarkably young age of 23. Dr. Shenkman completed her internal medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital in her home state of Michigan, followed by a cardiology fellowship at the University of Rochester in New York and an interventional cardiology fellowship at the prestigious Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

DR. ALEXANDER ZUBKOV, Brain Health

There is a philosophy in some sectors of the medical establishment that believes the best approach to caring for patients can be found in a marriage of practices from both Western advancements and Eastern philosophy. One doctor who strongly believes in this approach is Dr. Zubkov.

After spending more than 30-years devoting himself to specialized care for neurological conditions and critical brain health management within the framework of traditional Western medicine, he noticed concerning patterns in his younger patients that led him to expand his perspective. As his approach to healthcare evolved he recognized the limitations of conventional strategies. To help mitigate these limitations, Dr. Zubkov turned to integrative and functional medicine to pursue more comprehensive solutions. During his fellowship, he explored the convergence of neuroscience with Eastern and Western medical practices, emphasizing personalized care tailored to individual needs.

LEADERSHIP & CONTRIBUTIONS

Dr. Zubkov has made significant contributions to prestigious medical institutions. From 2008 to 2018, he served as the Medical Director of the Fairview Southdale Hospital Stroke Program. He focuses on a preventive approach and addressing the root causes of common concerns, “In our world, filled with the consequences of unhealthy lifestyles, I aspire to be a beacon of hope. I encourage individuals to embrace real food, exercise, and rest, transforming their lives without sacrificing joy and fun. Together, we can pave the way for radiant health through a unified voice and mind, proving that change is possible and within reach for all.”

A VISION FOR HOLISTIC HEALTH

Dr. Zubkov envisions a healthcare system that empowers individuals to make informed choices and adopt tailored strategies for lasting health improvements. He aims to inspire change by promoting the power of a unified voice and mind, guiding individuals toward vibrant health and well-being.

In alignment with his mission, Dr. Zubkov partnered with 1MD Nutrition®. This collaboration underscores his commitment to bridging traditional medicine with innovative, evidencebased solutions. “Our collaboration, especially with their newest cognitive health supplement, MindMD®, signifies a pivotal step in bridging the gap between traditional medicine and cutting-edge supplements.” Together, they have launched MindMD®, a broad-spectrum cognitive health supplement that reflects Dr. Zubkov’s dedication to holistic, optimal health and cognitive well-being. DR. ADAM KREITENBERG, Bone & Joint Health

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 5 Americans suffer from some form of joint discomfort. And that number is expected to virtually double in the next decade as more Baby Boomers and Generation X members get older. Dr. Kreitenberg’s passion for combating joint discomfort stems from a deeply personal experience. “It started with my mom,” he says. “She raised me and my three siblings while battling with aging joint ailments and her struggle inspired me to help people promote their health and quality of life. Nobody should have to struggle that way; not when there is naturally-sourced and effective support out there.”

Dr. Kreitenberg’s search for impactful, natural remedies led him to 1MD Nutrition. As part of their esteemed team of physician formulators, he has worked to redefine society’s approach to health and nutrition. Again, this is where nutrition science plays a vital role. 1MD Nutrition’s team have traveled globally to identify naturally sourced ingredients and superfoods, developing cutting-edge joint and bone health solutions.

DR. DANIEL BRISON, Men’s Health

Dr. Daniel Brison is a board-certified urologist with over 11 years of practice experience. After moving from Israel to New York to pursue his medical education. He completed his undergraduate studies in biochemistry at New York University before attending medical school at the State University of New York. After completing his residency, Dr. Brison was accepted into the prestigious Endourology fellowship program at UCLA.

Beyond his practice, Dr. Brison maintains an active role in the medical community. “My passion to help others extends outside of my career. I volunteer for the LA County Disaster Healthcare Volunteers Program in my free time.” He said, “I am also a member of the American Urological Association and the Endourological Society. I authored numerous chapters in the 5-Minute Urology Consult series, a reference guide for other medical practitioners. I have participated in multiple clinical studies published in medical journals, including the Journal of Urology.”

Dr. Brison’s extensive clinical experience led him to recognize the critical importance of prostate health management, particularly as patients age. That recognition is what led him to 1MD Nutrition.

INNOVATION IN UROLOGY

It was this insight that ultimately drove Dr. Brison to join 1MD Nutrition® to develop innovative prostate health solutions. The men’s health medical expert, working alongside other physician formulators, has helped revolutionize the approach to prostate health management through natural solutions. In other words, nutrition once again played a foundational role in how the company developed and has evolved.

Through collaborative research with nutrition scientists, Dr. Brison helped develop ProstateMD®, an advanced nutritional supplement. The formula incorporates USPlus®, a unique saw palmetto extract that has received verified certification from US Pharmacopeia (USP). This specialized extract contains significantly higher levels of beneficial compounds than generic saw palmetto extracts, including up to three times the beta-carotene, ten times the lutein, and thirty times the zeaxanthin.

“When USPlus® is combined with our potent blend of bio-available plant sterols, essential antioxidants, and vital minerals, you will get a targeted men’s health solution to support prostate, bladder, and urinary tract health. ProstateMD® contains a potent sterol lipid blend of pine bark extract, stinging nettle, sunflower lecithin, and safflower oil, which encourage the maintenance of a healthy prostate size. The herbal extract, pygeum additionally supports prostate health by aiding in urinary control.”

Through his work with 1MD Nutrition®, Dr. Brison promotes an integrative approach to health that combines scientific research with comprehensive wellness guidance. This approach encompasses naturally sourced ingredients, balanced nutrition, fitness, and mental well-being to support overall prostate and urinary tract health. His goal remains consistent with his initial motivation for entering medicine: to help people improve their quality of life through safe, effective, and naturally derived support.

Dr. Brison recommends ProstateMD®

ProstateMD: This product promotes prostate health and supports urinary tract function while helping to maintain a healthy urination schedule. It also supports healthy prostate cell function and includes patented USPlus®, a saw palmetto extract with higher levels of betacarotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin compared to typical saw palmetto extracts. This collaboration between medical expertise and evidence-based nutrition represents a significant shift in healthcare. While some healthcare organizations have promoted preventative health, 1MD Nutrition® is taking it a step further. They’re creating a bridge between traditional practice and nutrition science, showing that the two aren’t separate paths but essential partners in maintaining whole-body health. And the results thus far are incredible.

Since its founding, 1MD Nutrition® has helped over five million customers improve their health, and gives back through Vitamin Angels, impacting over 800,000 women and children worldwide.

In summary, the fact that medical schools only provide less than 20 hours of nutrition training to doctors, in this writer’s opinion, is reprehensible. But the real issue doesn’t stop there. Given what we have learned in researching 1MD Nutrition, surely the very foods we eat impact our health in ways that, as an example, the food manufacturers that are responsible for the copious amount of processed ingredients that go into our food supply don’t want us to know about. For me, I welcome the marriage of Eastern and Western medicine philosophies while ensuring nutrition science is a part of my medical care. It just makes sense - and I don’t understand how this is not already standard practice for our healthcare system.

WILBUR ROSS

TALES

FROM THE BANKRUPTCY KING

Wilbur Ross is acclaimed for bringing bankrupt corporations back to life, serving as President Trump’s Secretary of Commerce from 2017-2021, and even helping Trump curb personal bankruptcy in the ‘90s.

However, in a pivot to his illustrious 55-year career, Ross has written a memoir, Risks and Returns: Creating Success in Business and Life, filled with anecdotes of his life. Ross delves into his success in business and politics, mixing with tycoons like Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn, and the Rothschilds, and entices readers to some details of his personal life—hanging out with King Charles, potluck dinners at the Dakota with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Despite his Wall Street triumphs, Ross came from a modest upbringing. His father, a lawyer, passed away when he was a student at Yale, so he obtained student aid, got a part-time job, and joined the ROTC, which paid a small stipend, to cover his living expenses. “I had two younger siblings and my mother was a thirdgrade teacher, so it was a heavy lift for her to bring up another two children and get them properly educated and all that, so I became self-sufficient when I was a teenager.”

KING CHARLES’ FAVORITE ENTERTAINER

Ross became well aquatinted with King Charles of Britain before entering politics, through his support of The Prince of Wales’s Foundation (now called The King’s Foundation.) “Because of that foundation, I was spending a lot of time over there in London, and as a result, got to know other people in the royal family and some of the big entertainers. “You’ll see some of those stories in the book,” Ross shared.

As strait-laced as Prince Charles and Camilla seemed, Ross said, there was one very bawdy, foul-mouthed entertainer that they loved, inviting her to perform every year at their charity event. “That was a very interesting aspect, adding a dimension to him.” Alas, Ross would not give up the identity of the entertainer’s name, you’ll have to read the book to find out.

JOHN, YOKO & BACALL

Ross resided for 20 years at the Dakota, the Central Park West apartment building known for its artsy residents like John Lennon, Leonard Bernstein and Roberta Flack. “I was an anomaly because it was not a big hangout for Wall Street people, but I found it fascinating.” Did he meet Lauren Bacall, a resident of over 50 years? “Yes, but we knew her by her real name, which was Betty.”

The Dakota functioned like a small village. On the first Wednesday of every October, they had a potluck party in the outdoor courtyard, with each family bringing their favorite dish. John and Yoko brought macrobiotic food.

Ross was the co-op’s board president in 1980 when John Lennon was assassinated. The building was besieged day and night by thousands of people mourning the icon. “Eventually, we thought we needed some sort of a cathartic event to signal to the mourners that it was time to go home,” Ross said. They recruited Yoko’s friend David Geffen, the music mogul, who convinced her to hold a ceremony in Strawberry Fields in Central Park, a spot John loved. It cleared out the crowd. “It was,” he says, “an extraordinary experience to go through, especially as a board member.”

Ross was amazed to see such famous people joining in with their neighbors, showing their warmth and humanity. “It made it very nice because in most New York buildings, if you ride on the elevator with someone, they don’t even look at you, let alone talk to you. But there, there was a very communal feeling and a real feeling of belonging,” he added.

A FULL CIRCLE MOMENT

In a way, the publication of this book is a full-circle moment in Ross’s life as a student at Yale, his dream was to be a fiction writer. He signed up for a course that required writing 1,000 words of fiction or poetry every day by 10 am. “By the end of the second week, I was out of material, so I dropped the course, and it saved me from a life of poverty,” he said. “Now, all these decades later, I have a lot of material. It’s not fictional, it’s factual. But in that sense, this is the result of a 60-some-odd-year preparation.”

Wilbur Ross’ new book is available at most booksellers and amazon.com

THE MANE EVENT

ESSENTIAL HAIR CARE TIPS THAT ACTUALLY WORK

Beautiful, healthy hair doesn’t happen by accident. Whether you have straight, curly, or wavy hair, maintaining its health and appearance requires consistent care and the right techniques. This comprehensive guide will take you through everything you need to know about keeping your hair looking its best.

Understanding your hair type is the first crucial step in developing an effective hair care routine. Hair varies significantly from person to person, coming in different textures from fine to coarse, varying levels of porosity, and different tendencies toward oiliness or dryness. Knowing your specific hair type helps you choose the most appropriate products and care methods for optimal results.

Healthy Hair Starts Here The foundation of healthy hair begins with proper washing technique. Start by applying shampoo primarily to the scalp, using gentle massaging motions with your fingertips rather than your nails. Keep conditioner focused on the mid-lengths to ends of your hair, and finish with a cool water rinse to seal the cuticles. It’s important to note that daily washing isn’t necessary for most people— finding your optimal washing frequency based on your scalp’s oil production is key.

The Best Condition Conditioning practices play a vital role in maintaining your hair’s moisture balance. Regular deep conditioning sessions every one to two weeks help keep hair hydrated and manageable. Leave-in conditioners provide extra protection throughout the day, while pre-shampoo treatments can be beneficial for particularly dry hair. For best results, apply products to damp rather than soaking wet hair.

Not So Hot! Heat styling can cause considerable damage if not done properly, so protection is essential. Always apply heat protectant products before using any hot tools and keep styling temperatures between 300- and 380-degrees Fahrenheit for most hair types. Limit heat styling to two or three times per week, and whenever possible, allow your hair to air dry naturally.

PM Savvy Nighttime care can make a significant difference in your hair’s health and appearance. Using a silk or satin pillowcase reduces friction and helps prevent breakage. You might also consider wrapping your hair in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet. Avoid tight hairstyles while sleeping and take advantage of nighttime hours by applying overnight treatments when needed.

Vitamin Boost Beautiful hair starts from within, so nutrition plays a crucial role. A balanced diet rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and vitamins A, C, and E will support healthy hair growth. Staying wellhydrated is equally important. Some people find supplements helpful, including biotin, vitamin D, iron, collagen peptides, and zinc, though it’s always wise to consult healthcare providers before starting any supplement regimen.

Leave It To The Pros Professional care remains an important aspect of hair maintenance. Regular trims every eight to twelve weeks help remove split ends before they can travel up the hair shaft, maintain your desired shape and style, and prevent breakage from damaged ends. If you color your hair, use color-safe products and wait 48-72 hours between washing after coloring. Protect colored hair from sun exposure and consider using color-depositing products to maintain vibrancy.

Gorgeous Hair Year-Round Seasonal care requires different approaches throughout the year. In summer, focus on protecting your hair from UV damage, cover it when in direct sunlight, rinse after swimming, and use leave-in conditioners more frequently. Winter care calls for more frequent deep conditioning, avoiding going outside with wet hair, using anti-static products, and considering a humidifier indoors.

Ditch The Frizz Frizz management requires specific attention. Anti-frizz serums, applying products to damp hair, regular keratin treatments, and using microfiber towels instead of terry cloth can all help control frizz. When addressing damage, implement protein treatments, reduce chemical processing, use bond-building products, and consider protective styling.

Long Term Maintenance Beautiful hair requires consistency and patience. Create a routine that works for your lifestyle and stick to it. Remember that changes won’t happen overnight, but with proper care and attention, you can achieve and maintain healthy, beautiful hair. What works for others may not work for you, so pay attention to how your hair responds to assorted products and techniques and adjust your routine accordingly. With proper care and attention, you can maintain beautiful, healthy hair throughout the year.

COSTA RICA

THE JEWEL OF CENTRAL AMERICA

For my first travel experience to Central America, I was fortunate to find myself in the verdant beauty of Costa Rica. With its solid cultural and artistic history and recent leadership role in sustainability, Costa Rica stands upon the pinnacle of desired tourist hotspots. Understandably, Costa Rica appears in many of the trending locations for travel in 2025.

If Central America were to be imagined as a family, Costa Rica would undoubtedly be the most reasonable and trusted child. Its strength and the strength of its people might have been carried down from its tumultuous history. Conquered by Columbus, it remained a colony of Spain for the next three hundred years, where it remained underdeveloped and impoverished. Following the Mexican War of Independence, Costa Rica finally became its own nation in 1828.

After a failed takeover by American settlers in 1856, Costa Rica established a democratic government thirteen years later. After its civil war in 1948, Costa Rica ensured voting rights and dismantled its military.

DOUBLE VISION

Now, Costa Rica is one of the world leaders in achieving a greener, sustainable, and overall climate change-conscious way of life. Within that caring cohort, Costa Rica tourism, namely the hotel networks, are proudly taking steps to lighten the carbon footprint while providing excellent hospitality.

A convenient distance from the Juan Santamaria International Airport are “sister” hotels: The Courtyard San Jose Airport Alajuela and the Fairfield by Marriott San Jose Airport Alajuela. Though separated by only a stroll from the lobby to the lobby, the hotels have distinct vibes. The Courtyard mirrors a more tropical atmosphere while the Fairfield echoes the rustic styles of its pioneer, J. Willard Marriott. However, both are genuinely dedicated to sustainable practices within and without the hotel community.

Once the guest enters the front entrance of either hotel, it becomes evident that customer service and sustainability await. At The Courtyard, the items for sale at the gift shop and market, just opposite the concierge desk, range from t-shirts that display graphics of the most common and commercially popular Costa Rican wildlife: the Morpheus butterfly, the three-toed sloth, the macaw, the tree frog, and the great quetzal. The market also offers packages of Britt Coffee, one of the highest quality and popular brands, in several varieties. Costa Rican chocolate tempts guests with its pure sweetness, and it is the motto of Costa Rica-Pura Vida, which translates to The Good Life, but is used in many different contexts.

Walk straight ahead, and the guest is welcomed into Centro, The Courtyard’s main restaurant, which offers the highest quality and taste of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Likewise, The Fairfield provides the same excellent international cuisine. Both emphasize superb customer service, which is why the wait staff was a significant factor in the total enjoyment of my journey. The mixed quesadilla, guacamole, and spicy margarita stood out from an already delectable menu. I was also encouraged to include rice and beans with every meal.

HISTORIC SITES & A VOLCANO

Speaking of “village,” the historic sites within San Jose, Costa Rica’s capital, paint the pure canvas of this proud country. Among the places not to be missed is The Teatro Nacional, whose ornate construction from 1891 is considered the finest historical building in San Jose. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum is underneath the Plaza de la Cultura. The museum boasts a rich, cultural collection of artisan pieces, from gold figurines to stone carvings to detailed dioramas of the Indigenous peoples of Costa Rica.

The peak of my journey occurred at the beginning—a hiking tour to view the Paos Volcano, more familiarly termed The Great Crater. About an hour from San Jose, this active volcano is the second-largest crater in the world, measuring more than a mile across and nine hundred feet deep. It last erupted in 2017, leaving sizeable scars on the surrounding cement paths and stairways. The sulfur smell emanating from the crater and the impacted ash surrounding the area speaks to the immense power of nature.

However, within this smoldering and even threatening destroyer lies the key to economic and natural sustainability. Volcanic soil is ideal for growing coffee plants. Costa Rica has seven active volcanoes and two hundred volcanic formations dating back as far as sixtyfive million years.

Rooms at both hotels are included in the sustainable campaign. The hotels achieve comfort without the glitz and subtly demonstrate ecological responsibility. The faucets have water-conserving filters, but the guest would always feel safe because part expressing the need for sustainability is striking a balance.

For all its impressive details, the most meaningful contribution to Costa Rica Marriott’s sustainable portfolio came on the last morning of my visit. I joined a large group of hotel workers with rubber gloves and trash bags to clean the grounds of a local sports complex. The camaraderie of the group made the task enjoyable and swift. After the work, we all sat under a canopy of trees and enjoyed boxed lunches and anecdotes in Spanish. I quickly understood that sustainability is not just a word to decorate marketing copy but a dedication and a responsibility that can be performed individually or as a group, proving the somewhat overused term that it does indeed “take a village.”

MOTHER NATURE UPCLOSE

So, as I was focused on sustainable practices at the hospitality level (still essential), I was immersed in a country where the very survival of its culture, people, and economy relies on naturally occurring sustainability. The many species of birds I “collected” on my nature walks near the hotel spoke of the ecological diversity, an allusion to the power of community. The locally sourced fruits and vegetables that populated my plates showed me what is possible with healthy soil. The smiles on the Marriott staff as they cleaned up their community reminded me why I am a travel writer. The family metaphor is ever-present.

Costa Rica, more than its Central American siblings, is a world leader in sustainability, and I do my part by contributing my journalistic work to the world.

CALMNESS OF THE CATSKILLS TRAVEL

A HEAVENLY ESCAPE FROM NYC

Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, just a little over a two-hour drive from Manhattan, lies the quaint hamlet of Fishs Eddy and good friend Gale Brophy’s year-round private resorts. Gale had given me an open invitation to visit at any time, and although I had been there in the summer to do a photoshoot with her, I wanted to photograph the gorgeous foliage later in the year. So, in late October, I set off from my home on Long Island to drive up for an extended weekend trip.

Once I was over the GW Bridge and onto Palisades Parkway, the traffic volume eased up, and I had a stress-free drive through beautiful scenery to my destination. Fishs Eddy is accessed by the incredible single-lane Veterans Memorial Bridge, built originally as a railway bridge in 1901 and converted to a road bridge in 1957.

HISTORIC HOMES & A WARM WELCOME

Gale Brophy owns three houses in Fishs Eddy, all built in 1839: the main house, which she uses when she visits from Palm Beach or NYC; a second where Debbie, the head of resort housekeeping, lives with her husband Tony; and a cozy guest house, where I stayed.

Once I had dropped off my luggage and said “hi” to Debbie and Tony, I drove into the nearby village of Hancock, 5.5 miles away, to get provisions from the supermarket and a bite to eat at the Circle E Diner.

EXPLORING THE ESTATES

The resorts are split into two properties, DeerRidge Estate and RiverView Estate, and can accommodate up to seventy-two guests between them, although they are individual rentals.

I went up to RiverView to take photos as the sun came over the mountains. I was not disappointed by the display that Mother Nature provided as I wandered around the property, filling my lungs with fresh mountain air and exploring the buildings—from the logbuilt main guesthouse with its indoor hot tub, dry sauna, incredible bedrooms, living room and kitchen, to the entertainment building which has extra bedrooms, a pool table, TV lounge and full kitchen, all above the banquet hall that can accommodate up to 225 guests for any party that you can think of.

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND

Fishs Eddy is located on the East Branch of the Delaware River and Gale owns one mile of glorious riverside frontage. It is a magnet for Bald and Golden Eagles and a haven for anglers. Coupled with the hiking trails on the mountain, it is an ideal getaway for those who, like me, prefer mountains to the beach!

I spent much of the day chilling in nature, walking around and taking in breathtaking scenery: the environment forces one to slow down and appreciate peace, to be thankful for what is right on the doorstep of the Big Apple and to enjoy the simple things in life, like birdsong, clean air and beautiful views.

After a late lunch and a bit of time back at the guest house, I went up to DeerRidge to catch the sunset. It is such a wonderfully unique building. The bottom level consists of a converted horse stable that once housed Gale’s Polo World Cup-winning ponies and 1991 Kentucky Derby winner Strike the Gold, which Gale owned. The upper-level bedrooms are converted haylofts.

The views back up the mountain across the former horse paddocks, still with the old corral fencing in place, are truly spectacular. RiverView can be seen, sitting majestically surveying it all a few hundred yards away and elevated by maybe a hundred feet.

ADVENTURE IN THE MOUNTAINS

On my last day in Fishs Eddy, I enlisted Tony’s help, and we went on a Kubota UTV ride up the mountain. We explored the trails and marveled at the vast outcrops of bluestone that make up the mountains. This was the perfect way to end my brief stay in the Catskill Mountains.

I will be back, always ready to discover something new—any time of year.

A ROOM WITH A HUE

MAKING COLOR WORK IN YOUR HOME

The psychology of color has long fascinated interior designers and homeowners alike. The hues we choose for our living spaces don’t just reflect our personal taste, they actively shape our moods, influence our behavior, and transform the perceived dimensions of our rooms. In this guide, we’ll explore how to harness the power of four fundamental colors to create spaces that both look and feel exactly right

THE PINK RENAISSANCE

Once relegated to nurseries and teenage bedrooms, pink has undergone a sophisticated revival in modern interior design. Today’s pinks are nuanced and mature, ranging from subtle blush tones to deep coral hues. The key to working with pink lies in understanding its undertones and choosing the right companions.

For a contemporary look, pair dusty rose with charcoal gray or deep navy blue. These combinations create a balanced atmosphere that feels both fresh and grounded. In living spaces, pink can create a warm, welcoming environment that flatters skin tones and promotes conversation. The secret is moderation, consider using pink as an accent wall or through textiles rather than painting an entire room.

Design Tip: To prevent pink from feeling too sweet, incorporate natural materials like wood and stone. Their organic textures help anchor the color and add depth to the space.

BLUE: THE VERSATILE CLASSIC

Blue remains the world’s favorite color, and for good reason. From ethereal sky blue to dramatic navy, this versatile hue can create any atmosphere. In bedrooms, lighter blues promote tranquility and better sleep, while deeper blues in home offices can enhance focus and productivity.

The magic of blue lies in its ability to expand space visually. Light blues can make small rooms feel larger and airier, especially when used on ceilings. Darker blues, conversely, can add intimacy to oversized rooms or create a cozy reading nook.

Design Tip: When working with blue, pay attention to natural light. North-facing rooms benefit from warmer blues with yellow undertones, while south-facing spaces can manage cooler, more dramatic blue hues.

GREEN: A NATURAL TOUCH

As our lives become increasingly digital, the desire to connect with nature has made green an essential color in contemporary interiors. From sage to emerald, green brings vitality and balance to any space. It’s particularly effective in rooms where you want to promote relaxation and restoration.

Kitchen designs are embracing green through cabinetry and backsplashes, creating spaces that feel fresh and invigorating. In living rooms greens can create a sophisticated backdrop for artwork and furnishings, while softer sage tones work beautifully in bedrooms and bathrooms.

Design Tip: Combine different shades of green in the same space for a layered, botanical feel. Use darker greens for larger pieces like sofas or cabinets, and lighter tones for accessories and accent pieces.

GRAY: THE NEW NEUTRAL

Gray has revolutionized the concept of neutral colors in interior design. Unlike beige or white, gray provides depth and sophistication while maintaining versatility. The key to successful gray spaces lies in understanding undertones—some grays lean warm with brown or purple undertones, while others stay cool with blue or green bases.

In contemporary homes, gray serves as an excellent foundation for both bold and subtle color schemes. It can function as a sophisticated backdrop for vibrant art pieces or create a calming monochromatic scheme when used in varying shades.

Design Tip: Layer different textures in gray spaces to prevent them from feeling flat. Combine matte and glossy finishes, and incorporate materials like velvet, linen, and metallics.

MAKING IT ALL WORK

YELLOW: THE SUNSHINE SOLUTION

Yellow, the color of sunshine and optimism, brings an immediate burst of energy and warmth to any space. This powerful hue has the unique ability to transform even the darkest corners into vibrant, welcoming areas that radiate their own light. From buttery pastels to rich golden tones, yellow’s range offers solutions for various design challenges.

Research indicates that yellow stimulates mental activity and generates muscle energy, making it particularly effective in breakfast nooks, kitchens, and home offices where alertness and productivity are desired. However, designers caution that moderation is key—too much yellow can be overwhelming. The solution often lies in strategic deployment: a yellow accent wall in a gray room, sunny curtains in a neutral space, or golden accessories that catch and reflect light.

Designer’s Tip: For rooms with northern exposure, choose yellows with a hint of red undertone (like butter yellow or warm honey) rather than green-based yellows.

Remember that color is deeply personal, and while design rules provide useful guidelines, your home should reflect your taste and lifestyle. The most successful spaces are those where color enhances both the aesthetic appeal and functional aspects of your daily life.

Whether you’re drawn to the sophistication of gray, the tranquility of blue, the vitality of green, or the warmth of pink, there’s a perfect color palette waiting to transform your home

Dear Mindie,

I am at such a crossroads! I recently got fired from my job, but since it was in a field I didn’t like and a position I do not wish to return to, I am not overly upset. Other than the significant loss of income, I’m at peace with the fact that I’m unemployed. I’m trying to use my time to figure out a path that will better suit my personality and passions, but I cannot seem to figure out what that may be.

The hiring pace is slow, so I have some time to figure things out, but I am worried that I’ll still feel stuck going into 2025 with the same confusion and insecurity I feel now. How do I determine what career path is best for me? How do I avoid making another career mistake and wasting more time? Please help!

Sincerely, Lost

Dear Lost—

There is no such thing as a career mistake or wasted time. At the very least, you’ve gained experience in a field you do not want to reenter. You’ve learned valuable life skills and the ability to understand what is not right for you. Sometimes, you must try something and fall to stand up and fly.

To try and pinpoint the best career for your next attempt, I would advise the following steps: give some deep thought to those who inspired you as a child—what types of careers did they have? What were their values, and what did they stand for? What personality type do you believe you have? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Do you enjoy problem-solving and producing fast solutions? Or do you like to think with your senses and employ passion? There are no right or wrong answers, but the way you lean toward should determine what field you may find the most joy.

I recommend taking a personality assessment online to get a clearer idea of your true personality type. What you see on paper (or a computer screen) may differ from how you envision yourself. This information will be extremely useful in pinpointing career direction: sales, public relations, teaching, or something in the helping field, for instance.

Next, I recommend taking some of this downtime you say you have and shadowing some professionals in the field you deem desirable. That will help you better understand what the day-to-day operations are like and what your daily regimen may be. Another effective way to make connections and learn about any given field is to spend time connecting on LinkedIn and social media. Many platforms have groups specific to industries to learn from and network with.

Lastly, reading and researching a field, including income brackets, necessary education, and more, are all great ways to strengthen your understanding of the fields you can pre-determine what you may be interested in via the personality and childhood assessment strategies. If you wind up taking a step only to realize it may not be a fit, that will not be wasted time. It will just be a step bringing you closer to your calling and, hopefully, destination.

I hope these suggestions help! Wishing you luck and love!

HEALTHY MOUTH…HEALTHY BODY

STARTING THE YEAR OFF RIGHT WITH ORAL HEALTH

It’s a new year and we all start off with promises to ourselves. The most important foundation of a healthy body is oral health. The mouth is the gateway to the rest of our body systems and many diseases can start there. We know chronic inflammation is the start of any complications. If you have gingivitis or periodontal disease, studies suggest you are more likely to get Alzheimer’s, heart disease, or diabetes.

There are some easy ways to keep your mouth healthy. You should go to your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning (and since the New Year is here, I suggest you contact your dentist’s office as soon as possible to schedule those two cleaning appointments so your year is set), but the secret is what you do daily at home.

STEPS TO GOOD HEALTH

Using a sonic toothbrush is a must for the basics. There is no way a manual brush can remove plaque as efficiently. A water flosser is also an essential must. Think of it as power washing vs. using a string to clean (string floss). The water flosser is much more reliable for getting microscopic particles out of the gumline a toothbrush can’t reach. There is also a concern that many string flosses have forever chemicals like PFAs that can enter the bloodstream through the gum tissue.

A good toothpaste is essential. The advancement of nano-hydroxyapatite has replaced the need for fluoride. It helps with sensitivity and can remineralize the enamel surface, making it more decay resistant. Nano HAP has the potential to reverse early cavities. Finding a toothpaste that is not too abrasive and free of dyes, saccharin and other toxic ingredients is ideal. Adding vitamins like D3 and K2 are ideal to help with calcium uptake into the bones and teeth. My brand, Intelliwhite, will be launching Hap 10+ Superpaste in February on HSN, which contains this. It also has organic olive oil, which has been shown to have antibacterial properties. Xylitol is added to fight cavities and help with remineralizing the teeth.

I’m not a big proponent of mouthwash. Many are too harsh and wipe out all the bacteria. By killing all the bacteria, you wreak havoc on the oral microbiome and lose the necessary protective bacteria. Alcohol in mouthwash is also very problematic, as is a rinse with an acidic pH. I don’t see them as necessary in our routine. Some studies have linked mouthwash to high blood pressure.

NUTRITION, TOO

Diet is also key. Many of us are deficient in certain minerals and vitamins that have been correlated to people with gum disease. Studies have shown that vitamin C, D3, K2, and Coq10 are low in periodontal patients. I recommend supplementing these vitamins if you can’t get enough through diet. But you should speak with your primary care physician before you start a supplement regimen.

What you drink can also affect the health of your teeth. We must be careful not to regularly expose our enamel to very acidic drinks. Bottled sports drinks, energy drinks and carbonated sodas can eat away tooth enamel. Hydration is key, and we must keep a healthy saliva flow to wash away food particles and help carry minerals to the teeth. If your mouth is dry, opt for a mint or lozenge with xylitol to help stimulate salivary flow. And to ensure you are staying hydrated, you should always make sure you are drinking water throughout the day, every day.

Start your new year with a commitment to your overall health, especially your oral health and oral health care regimen, starting with these easy steps at home.

In good health and a Happy New Year!

YOUR 2025 WELLNESS BLUEPRINT

BETTER HEALTH FROM THE GROUND UP!

Maintaining good health should be a top priority all year. The past few years have reminded us just how precious our wellbeing is, and how quickly it can be disrupted. As we embark on a new year, let’s explore some practical strategies to help us stay healthy and resilient in the year to come.

PREVENTATIVE CARE

One of the most important steps we can take is to prioritize preventative healthcare. Regular checkups, screenings, and immunizations can help detect issues early and prevent them from becoming more serious problems down the line. Make appointments with your primary care provider, dentist, and any other relevant specialists to ensure you’re up to date on all recommended preventative measures.

In addition to traditional medical care, consider incorporating preventative practices into your daily routine. This might include things like getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and staying physically active. Each of these lifestyle factors plays a crucial role in supporting overall health and reducing the risk of chronic conditions.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us have become more aware of the importance of a strong immune system. While there’s no magic bullet, there are several steps you can take to give your body’s defenses a boost.

Prioritize good nutrition by focusing on whole, nutrientdense foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats should make up the foundation of your diet. Supplements like vitamin C, zinc, and elderberry may also provide an extra immune-supporting punch.

Regular exercise is another powerful way to support your immune system. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. And don’t forget the importance of managing stress - chronic stress can take a toll on your immune system, so be sure to build in time for relaxation and self-care.

CULTIVATE MENTAL WELLBEING

Physical health and mental health are linked, so it’s crucial that we don’t neglect the latter. Make mental wellness a priority in 2025 by incorporating practices like meditation and mindfulness.

Maintaining strong social connections is also key. Humans are inherently social creatures, and feeling isolated or disconnected can have serious implications for our mental health. Prioritize quality time with loved ones, whether in person or virtually. Join a club, volunteer, or find other ways to build community.

Additionally, be mindful of your technology use. While digital tools can be incredibly valuable, excessive, or mindless screen time can contribute to issues like anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep. Set boundaries and strive for a healthy balance.

BE PROACTIVE

As we move into the new year, it’s also important to consider safety measures that can help protect our physical wellbeing. This might include things like wearing seatbelts, practicing food safety, and taking precautions against the flu and other seasonal illnesses.

If you have any ongoing health concerns, collaborate closely with your medical team to develop a proactive plan for managing them. This could involve medication, lifestyle modifications, or other targeted interventions. The key is to be proactive rather than reactive.

EMBRACE FLEXIBILITY

Finally, it’s important to remember that health is not a static state - it’s a dynamic process that requires ongoing attention and adjustment. As we move through 2025, be prepared to adapt your approach as needed. What works for you now may need to be tweaked or replaced down the line.

Stay open-minded, listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to try new things. The more flexible and adaptable you can be, the better equipped you’ll be to maintain your health and wellbeing, no matter what challenges the new year may bring.

Staying healthy in 2025 will require a multifaceted approach. By focusing on preventative care, bolstering your immune system, cultivating mental wellbeing, prioritizing safety, and embracing flexibility, you can set yourself up for a happy, healthy, and resilient new year.

GREAT BITES

KICKING THE YEAR OFF RIGHT

The New Year means a lot of different things to a lot of people. Is it time to lose those ill-gotten pounds you worked hard to stack on during the holidays? Is it about doing the time-honored tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions that you know you are going to break? Or are you ready to act like an adult while still being able to enjoy the flavors and fare you have become accustomed to?

Well, for me, the New Year is about balance and exploration. I try to find the balance in enjoying my favorite foods without overindulging, while increasing my physical activity to bring down some of those pounds. I also commit myself to trying new ingredients, new cuisines, dishes and fare so that I continue to expand my flavor options throughout the year. Some years I am successful. Others I am not. And that is the nature of humanity, is it not? For I believe the adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!” is more apropos than ever. Especially when it comes to diet.

So, for the New Year, I challenge you to find that balance by not overeating and start your 2025 flavor journey by finding new spices, sauces and dishes to try. For that balance, I suggest these two simple, yet flavorful salad dishes:

CHICKEN PAILLARD OVER ARUGULA

Ingredients

Chicken:

• 4 (6 ounce) skinless, boneless chicken breast halves

• ⅓ cup dry white wine (Optional)

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 1 small shallot, chopped

• 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 1.5 clove garlic, crushed

• Salt & Pepper to taste

Salad:

• 1 lemon, juiced

• 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar

• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

• 2 teaspoons lemon zest

• ½ teaspoon salt, divided

• ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided

• 4 cups trimmed arugula

• 8 ounces cherry tomatoes, halved

Preparation

To marinate the chicken properly and quickly, you will need a meat tenderizer or heavy pan to pound the chicken breasts on a work surface to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Whisk wine, lemon juice, shallot, olive oil, and garlic together in a bowl. Add chicken breasts to the bowl, cover and marinate for 15 minutes.

Time to make the salad: Whisk lemon juice, vinegar, olive oil, lemon zest, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper together in a large bowl. Add arugula and tomatoes; toss to combine.

Cook the chicken: Preheat a lightly oiled pan on the stove over high heat. Remove chicken from marinade, discarding the remaining marinade. Season chicken with remaining 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Lower the burner to medium heat and cook chicken until golden brown and just cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the center should read at least 165 degrees F. Plate chicken with arugula salad on top.

Ingredients

Steak:

• 10-ounce grilling steak (boneless prime rib)

• ½ teaspoon EACH: salt and pepper

• 1 teaspoon avocado oil

Salad:

• 4 ounces arugula

• 1 cup cherry tomatoes (cut in half)

• ½ English cucumber (diced)

• ½ avocado (sliced)

• ¼ cup thinly sliced red onions

Creamy Balsamic Dressing:

• ½ tablespoon EACH: grainy mustard, Dijon mustard, and balsamic vinegar

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• A pinch of salt and pepper

Preparation

Remove the steak from your refrigerator and evenly coat both sides with salt and pepper. Add all the salad ingredients to a salad bowl.

Grab a cast iron or heavy-bottomed pan and pre-heat over high heat. Drizzle the avocado oil over both sides of the steak. When the pan starts to smoke, add the steak and let it cook undisturbed for 2 minutes. Flip the steak over and let it cook for 2-3 minutes more. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let it rest.

While the steak is resting, it’s time to make the salad dressing by whisking the ingredients in a small bowl. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss.

Thinly slice the steak across the grain and serve it over the salad. Bon Appetit!

SPIRITS OF THE NEW YEAR

Every year, people ask me about Dry January as if it is some official day or month of the calendar. The reality is that most people over imbibe during the holiday season, resulting in the desire to “slow down” in January. And while trying to get their bodies back in shape after a series of tasty holiday events and more, no alcohol also means less caloric intake, helping to further burn more of those pounds you may have gained.

The conclusion I always reach in January is that while eating less and lowering your sugar, alcohol, and caloric intake is always healthy, you still need to be able to enjoy your meals and snacks.

Otherwise, you end up binge eating in the middle of the night because your body is craving sugar of some kind. Hence why moderation is the key for the month and will ultimately help you continue shedding that holiday weight!

STEAK SALAD

THE BRONZE OWL

VINTAGE VIBE COCKTAIL & COMFORT SPOT

The Bronze Owl is a high-end cocktail lounge and eatery that could only be created in NYC. It features mysterious gold velvet curtains at the entrance, which open onto an extra-large room full of avocado-green leather booths and forest-green walls. There’s a strong ’70s vibe—you almost expect velvet ropes, a la the golden days of Studio 54.

The Bronze Owl is at the back of the legendary Martinique Hotel, so quite a few hotel guests make repeat visits. It is certainly a blessing that this comfy, cozy, and chic establishment is placed smack dab in the middle of the city’s most tourist-driven area.

Despite the glamorous vibe, The Bronze Owl is a friendly place where people ranging from the post-MSG event crowd to tourists who’ve just visited the nearby Empire State Building or Macy’s are welcome. Executive Chef Franklin Becker remarks, “Our clientele is a mix of fashionistas, celebrities, local businesspeople, and hotel guests. It is such a comfortable space that we appeal to many people.”

We asked Becker how the location was chosen, and he responded, “We are located on West 33rd Street, an area rich with historical grittiness, which we wanted to acknowledge while providing a counterbalanced alternative. The Bronze Owl has a classically refined cocktail setting without the pomp and circumstance.”

SIP ‘N TELL

You’ll love the attentive service, signature cocktails, and the long American comfort and Italian fare list. Furthermore, the leather booths are so comfortable that you might need a server to pull you out of your seat at the night’s end (especially if you’ve had a few drinks)!

When we visited The Bronze Owl recently, we were thrilled to find a special list of “Low & No” alcohol cocktails created by head bartender Max Green. The highly refreshing Bocce Ball is a must-try if you are a longtime fan of the popular amaretto and orange juice combo (but I was always curious if it could be made less sweet and have some fizz). The Bocce Ball features Adriatico amaretto, fluffy orange, orange and Peychaud bitters and club soda. This is an addicting drink and packs a remarkable punch for being low alcohol.

Fans of giant drinks made for two should try Perched on High, made with Appleton Reserve, Copalli Cocoa, Campari Pineapple, lime juice, and whey. Old Fashioneds are made to your taste at The Bronze Owl; the signature is the Owl Old Fashioned consisting of Aberfeldy 12-year-old Single Malt Scotch Whiskey, Leopold Cherry Whiskey, Gifford Vanilla, Clement Mahina Coconut, and Laphroaig 10-year-old Single Malt Whiskey.

Executive Chef Franklin Becker commented, “We are primarily a cocktail bar, and the cocktails take center stage. The Boozy Italian Ice that Max makes is incredible. He shaves the ice with a Japanese Kakigori machine; now, the flavor (being served) is lemon, which is a mix of Le Moné aperitif wine, limoncello, and lemon juice. It’s quite refreshing.”

JUST CHILLING OUT

The menu starts with a section called “Chilled and Refreshing” featuring raw bar items like Oysters and Jumbo Shrimp that you can order in any quantity. The Grilled Mushrooms made with rosemary and thyme are very satisfying and healthy, and it was great to sample the two amazing salad offerings: the Endive Cup made with fennel, apple, walnut, cucumber and herbs, and the Caesar Salad made with Gem lettuce, anchovies, and Parmigiano Reggiano.

The next section of the menu is titled “Warm and Traditional,” where the elevated comfort food and Italian classics come into play! The Fried Mozzarella Sandwich made with fresh mozzarella and Bagna Cauda was rich and perfect for two. The Calabrian Chicken Wings are batter-coated and cooked with a sweet and hot sauce made with Calabrian Chili; they were sided with homemade bleu cheese dressing. A Chef’s Plate of three charcuterie meats and cheese is offered, with many options.

The highlights for the New York Lifestyles Magazine team were the Eggplant Parmesan, which was baked a little longer than most to create a goldenbrown outer crust, and the Spaghetti Carbonara, which had just the right touch of fresh cream, grated parm, and shredded herbs.

A TOAST + MORE!

The Bronzed Owl is also known for the “Toasts” section of its menu. There are five amazing topping choices and a traditional sourdough bread with a thick crust is used: Black Diamond Caviar & Burrata, Ricotta with Truffle Honey, Preserved Cherry Tomatoes with Stracciatella Cheese, Spicy Summer Square with Smoked Mozzarella, and Eggplant Caponata with Golden Raisins and Pine Nuts.

Next up on the menu are the “Pizza” offerings that look like they were created in Naples. There’s the Margherita, which we dug into fervently thanks to its fresh tomato sauce, basil, and buffalo mozzarella cheese (served hot and bubbling). Also available is the much-raved Marinara Pizza, made with chilis, garlic, and marjoram. Lastly, the House-Made Pepperoni Pizza is made with both mozzarella and Cacio di Roma cheese.

Comments Chef Becker: “The pizzas and charcuterie we make in-house are incredible, but believe it or not, my favorite thing on the menu is the Eggplant Parmesan.”

A SWEET ENDING

Although there are just two desserts on the menu, each is spectacular and memorable. The first is called Tiramisu Coffee, which is a traditional tiramisu with an extra-strong espresso kick. You might also try the perfectly golden brown and crunchy Almond Biscotti made not only with almonds but also with fennel seeds, giving it a licorice taste. You’ll be in heaven.

As you may have suspected, The Bronzed Owl does not really serve large plates or entrees. Everything is served for sharing. There is a special Small Bites Chef named Dan Drohan who creates the Italian and American lounge bites and is the mastermind behind the world-class pizza offerings.

Concludes Chef Becker with a smile, “I’ve been in this business for four decades now. I love creating new concepts and giving opportunities to younger talents to highlight what they do. Max Green’s cocktails and Dan Drohan’s Italian bites are delicious and fill a much-needed void in our area. Our pizza is phenomenal.”

Most nights at 9 pm, there is a deejay, which gives The Bronze Owl a clubby vibe. While you dine, you can hear funky ‘70s hits and deep cuts. Think of The Bronze Owl as bringing back the storied Manhattan nightlife from the boogie-down ‘70s in a bigger and better way!

SENZA GLUTEN

GLUTEN-FREE DINING IN THE VILLAGE

In the heart of Greenwich Village lies a culinary haven that’s transforming the dining experience for those with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities. Senza Gluten, a gluten-free Italian restaurant, is breaking barriers by serving up authentic Italian cuisine without compromise.

For the millions who must avoid gluten, dining out often means limited options and constant vigilance. But at Senza Gluten, the anxiety of cross-contamination vanishes the moment you step through the door. “I understand how difficult it can be to eat strictly gluten-free and how meaningful it is to be able to dine without worry,” says owner and co-founder Teona Khaindrava, who has created more than just a restaurant—she’s built a sanctuary for the gluten-free community.

A WORRY-FREE EXPERIENCE

The warm, family-style atmosphere is matched by a staff who intimately understands celiac disease, as many team members live with the condition themselves. This personal connection fuels their dedication to providing a safe, worry-free dining experience.

What sets Senza Gluten apart is its extensive menu that reads like a greatest hit of Italian cuisine. Lasagna, four cheese tortellini with pesto, mushroom ravioli—dishes that are typically off-limits become possibilities again. Even the seemingly simple pleasure of enjoying croutons in a Caesar salad is restored here.

“So many people have told me that this was the first time in years that they were able to enjoy their favorite dishes like tiramisu, cannoli, tortellini, carbonara,” Khaindrava shares. “The joy they feel and express means the world to me.”

The restaurant’s commitment to quality is evident in every dish, with fresh ingredients elevating their gluten-free creations. The dessert menu is equally impressive, featuring Italian classics like Torta Al Cioccolato (a molten chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet) and Traditional Sicilian Cannolis that rival their traditional counterparts.

MORE THAN A RESTAURANT

Over its decade-long presence in Greenwich Village, Senza Gluten has become more than just a restaurant—it’s a cornerstone of the gluten-free community. Their partnerships with the Celiac Disease Center of Columbia University and the NYC Celiac Disease Meetup Group demonstrate their commitment to advocacy and support.

The restaurant has cultivated a loyal following among both gluten-free and non-gluten-free diners, proving that dietary restrictions don’t have to mean sacrificing flavor or authenticity. “I’m truly happy that I can help others experience that joy,” says Khaindrava, who has spent nearly every day of the past ten years creating this special environment.

For anyone seeking authentic Italian cuisine in a completely gluten-free environment, Senza Gluten awaits at 206 Sullivan Street, open seven days a week. Whether you’re celiac, gluten-sensitive, or simply in search of excellent Italian food, you’ll find a warm welcome and an unforgettable meal.

WINTER ADVENTURES AND THRILLERS

DEN OF THIEVES 2: PANTERA

Not yet rated

Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. return in this next installment of the popular 2018 heist drama. This time the action isn’t Los Angeles, as the crime genius (Jackson, who is the son of rapper-actor Ice Cube) is now operating in Europe, as the story continues right as the first movie ends. His nemesis, the L.A. cop known as “Big Nick” (Butler), is determined to bring him down, as the nonstop action moves into high gear across the Atlantic. If you loved the original, expect more of the same, as Christian Gudegast has helmed and written both flicks

MICKEY 17

R

FLIGHT RISK

Not yet rated Mel Gibson directs this in-flight thriller featuring Mark Wahlberg as a hitman, Michelle Dockery as an FBI agent, and Topher Grace. He’s the witness she’s moving via small plane from a remote Alaskan wilderness to testify in a crime boss’s trial, but it seems there’s unexpected terror in the skies. This gripping adventure by Jared Rosenberg was on Hollywood’s famed “Black List” of the best unproduced screenplays, and while Mel Gibson is one of Hollywood’s least-likable humans, he is an Oscarwinning film director.

Triple Oscar-winning director-producer-screenwriter Bong Joon-ho returns to the big screen after his 2019 masterpiece Parasite ruled the 2020 Academy Awards with a new vision set far in the future. Unlike Parasite, this science-fiction adventure comedy is in English, not Bong’s native Korean, a slightly campy romp across the universe. Robert Pattison stars as Mickey, a down-and-out guy who signs up to be an “expendable” astronaut, then finds out the hard way just what that means. Oscar nominees Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun join in the unique madness that makes Bong’s movies so wigged-out and wonderful

PADDINGTON IN PERU PG

It’s Paddington Bear’s third big-screen outing and this one has singing nuns, a long plane ride, and most importantly, a trip to Peru, returning to his home country to visit his aunt. Of course, his cinematic family is along, although Sally Hawkins has been replaced with Emily Mortimer as Mary Brown. Hugh Bonneville returns as Henry Brown and Ben Whishaw again voices Paddington himself. There’s a reason both kids and adults love the Paddington movies with their delightful mix of fun, adventure, mystery, and stuffed-bear charm.

R Universal Studios loves to go back to the horror classics that helped make them a famed movie studio, which is why there’s yet another Wolf Man flick coming to scare the next unsuspecting generation of moviegoers. This one stars Christopher Abbott and the very talented Julia Garner (Ozark) as a married couple who inherit an old family home in the wilds of Oregon and visit with their young daughter. When a disturbingly weird transformation happens, there’s a lot to unpack as it turns out that monsters truly are real.

It’s been 10 years since Cameron Diaz has made a movie, but this comeback spy flick isn’t hitting the big screen. Look for it on Netflix, as she reunites with Jamie Foxx (her Annie costar from 2014) for a tale of two happily married and retired ex-CIA agents who are pulled back in when their identities are made public. Think crazy action sequences, comedic moments and more from Seth Gordon, the director/executive producer of Netflix’s The Night Agent.

This wedding-centric comedy marks the first time that comedic legends Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon have gotten together onscreen. She’s the sister of the bride, he’s the father of a different bride. When both weddings happen at the same posh destination, sparks fly, and crazily funny situations ensue. This is the somewhat inevitable meeting of the two actors that made Ron Burgundy (Anchorman) and Elle Woods (Legally Blonde) household names; can this comedy’s Jim and Margot be far behind?

Michelle Yeoh returns as Emperor Phillipa Georgiou (of Star Trek: Discovery fame), the central character in this first Star Trek film sine 2016. This time, the Oscar-winning actress’s role includes joining a Starfleet secret covert division created to protect the galaxy’s federation against those who threaten the alliance. Sam Richardson, Omari Hardwick, and a cast of diverse faces (and alien races) round out this next chapter of the never-ending tales of the Star Trek universe.

Producer Dick Wolf of the Law and Order and Chicago mega-TV series is at the helm of yet another crime series, this one set on the not-terriblymean streets of Long Beach, California. Rookie male cop (Brandon Larracuente) and veteran female officer (Trojan Bellisario) partner up in a squad car that drives into loads of criminal activity. Meanwhile, reallife criminal and actor Lori Laughlin, who spent two months in prison for her part in the USC admissions scandal, is back on the small screen as a police lieutenant. We’re thinking she’s probably a corrupt cop!

Remember the modern Sherlock Holmes-Dr. John Watson show Elementary that ran on CBS for eight years? This Watson isn’t Lucy Liu, instead it is Morris Chestnut, who leads this modern-day show. Produced and written by Craig Sweeney, who did similar jobs on Elementary, the conceit here is that Holmes has died and Watson has gone back to a medical practice, but soon finds that mysterious medical events keep finding him. Eve Harlow costars as a fellow physician who finds mysteries intriguing, too.

MISERY HATES COMPANY

A young woman is invited to a mysterious relative’s estate and winds up entangled in a murder investigation in this witty historical mystery that pits the gothic eeriness of  Crimson Peak against the comic absurdities of Knives Out.

Miss Marigold Manners may be steeped in the etiquette of her old-money Boston family, but she is also an accomplished, modern woman and an avid student of archaeology who can handle any situation with poise. When the death of her parents leaves her too destitute to pursue her academic career and she receives a letter from a distant relative on Great Misery Island, Marigold decides she must do and heads up the craggy, fog-shrouded coast of New England for a date with fate. Marigold arrives at Hatchet Farm, a moldering, gothic pile of a house inhabited by relatives so mired in the sins of the past, they have no future. She sets out to modernize the recluses with a brisk, ruthless efficiency, but her well-intentioned plans to manage their lives lead to malice—and murder. Marigold spies a body floating in the stormy waters surrounding the island, and her suspicions immediately turn to her hostile, weapon-wielding relatives when one of the local girls turns up missing. And she might not be the only one.

When another dead body is found in the garden of the estate, Marigold finds herself accused. She must enlist the help of an eccentric, colorful cast of friends and found family to save herself—and everything she holds dear. As secrets are uncovered and lies exposed, the question of “who done it?” turns into “who didn’t do it?” and Marigold must face a truth that shatters her steely poise and shakes her very sense of self.

A CONSPIRACY OF BONES: A Temperance Brennan Novel

The #1  New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a new riveting novel featuring her vastly popular character forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who must use all her tradecraft to discover the identity of a faceless corpse, its connection to a decade-old missing child case, and why the dead man had her cell phone number.

It’s sweltering in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Temperance Brennan, still recovering from neurosurgery following an aneurysm, is battling nightmares, migraines, and what she thinks might be hallucinations when she receives a series of mysterious text messages, each containing a new picture of a corpse that is missing its face and hands. Immediately, she’s anxious to know who the dead man is, and why the images were sent to her.

An identified corpse soon turns up, only partly answering her questions. To win answers to the others, including the man’s identity, she must go rogue, working mostly outside the system. That’s because Tempe’s new boss holds a fierce grudge against her and is determined to keep her out of the case. Tempe bulls forward anyway, even as she begins questioning her instincts. But the clues she discovers are disturbing and confusing. Was the faceless man a spy? A trafficker? A target for assassination by the government? And why was he carrying the name of a child missing for almost a decade?

With help from a number of law enforcement associates including her Montreal beau Andrew Ryan and the always-ready-with-a-smart-quip, ex-homicide investigator Skinny Slidell, and utilizing new cutting-edge forensic methods, Tempe draws closer to the astonishing truth.

But the more she uncovers, the darker and more twisted the picture becomes...

WHAT THE WIFE KNEW

PRIVATE RITES

From the award-winning author of  Our Wives Under the Sea, a speculative reimagining of King Lear, centering three sisters navigating queer love and loss in a drowning world.

It’s been raining for a long time now, so long that the land has reshaped itself and old rituals and religions are creeping back into practice. Sisters Isla, Irene and Agnes have not spoken in some time when their father, an architect as cruel as he was revered, dies. His death offers an opportunity for the sisters to come together in a new way. In the grand glass house they grew up in, their father’s most famous creation, the sisters sort through the secrets and memories he left behind, until their fragile bond is shattered by a revelation in his will.

The sisters are more estranged than ever, and their lives spin out of control: Irene’s relationship is straining at the seams. But something even more sinister might be unfolding, something related to their mother’s long-ago disappearance and the strangers who have always seemed unusually interested in the sisters’ lives. Soon, it becomes clear that the sisters have been chosen for a very particular purpose, one with shattering implications for their family and their imperiled world

Darby Kane, author of the #1 international bestseller  Pretty Little Wife, returns with another twisty domestic thriller about a wife wondering who tried to kill her husband twice before finally succeeding—because that was supposed to be her job.

Dr. Richmond Dougherty is a renowned pediatric surgeon, an infamous tragedy survivor, and a national hero. He’s also very dead—thanks to a fall down the stairs. His neighbors angrily point a finger at the newest Ms. Dougherty, Addison. The sudden marriage to the mysterious young woman only lasted ninety-seven days, and he’d had two suspicious “accidents” during that time. Now Addison is a very rich widow.

As law enforcement starts to circle in on Addison and people in town become increasingly hostile, sides are chosen with Kathryn, Richmond’s high school sweetheart, wife number one, and the mother of his children, leading the fray. Despite rising tensions, Addison is even more driven to forge ahead on the path she charted years ago.

Determined at all costs to unravel Richmond’s legacy, she soon becomes a target—with a shocking note left on her bedroom wall:  You will pay. But it will take a lot more than faceless threats to stop Addison. Her plan to marry Richmond then ruin him may have been derailed by his unexpected death, but she’s not done with him yet.

WINTER-PROOF YOUR PET: A SURVIVAL GUIDE

EXPERT ADVICE TO PROTECT YOUR DOG FROM HARSH WEATHER

With a warmer-than-normal fall season and a brutal start to the winter with record-low temperatures and rainfall, we thought it might be best to give you these tips a little earlier this year. After all, it is projected to be an unusually cold and wet winter.

During this time of year, it’s always difficult for New Yorkers. While it can be a beautiful time with snow falling, unfortunately being stuck inside, trying to clean that rancid salt and dirt from our shoes and boots, and keeping your furrever one calm, healthy and fit when it is too cold and wet outside can be extremely frustrating.

Each winter presents its own challenges when it comes to caring for our dogs, whether it’s because of too much snow, colder-than-normal temperatures, or a mix of the two. To help you through what is allegedly a tough winter ahead, I have put together some tips and tricks from our sister publication, Pet Lifestyles Magazine.

Kate Perry, owner of Kate Perry Dog Training & Daycare Center, one of the best trainers in the country and a columnist for Pet Lifestyles Magazine, has some fun, innovative indoor tricks and games for when it’s too cold to walk outside and to prevent your dogs from going stir crazy:

• Maintain your regular schedule as much as possible. Dogs love a good routine, and in fact, they depend on it. Even if it’s cold out, stick to your dog-walking routine when possible. But shorten the time outside! For the more athletic pooches and owners: Do stair master exercises in your stairwell.

• Use the fire exit stairs to run up and down with your pooch. Great exercise for you and your dog.

• Another good option is having two people standing on separate landings and working on your RECALL/ COME command.

• Protect your dog from the cold with a waterproof fleece-lined Velcro coat, the best coat to put on.

• Protect paws with Musher’s Secret, which helps protect a dog’s paws from salt, chemicals, and ice build-up. Just rub it into paws and between toes. If you prefer boots, Kate recommends Pawz Dog Boots, which are waterproof and allow dogs to feel the ground naturally.

• Be sure to wipe down paws, legs, and bellies to remove salt and dirt.

• If it’s too harsh outside, create indoor fun! A snuffle mat or puzzle toy is perfect for physical and mental enrichment as dogs search for treats.

• Pet-safe brand Busy Buddy twist-and-treat toys provide hours of boredom-busting, as can a frozen KONG with snacks provide a challenging, yummy project for your dog.

• Set up an indoor agility course with tunnels and other fun obstacles. You can also hide treats around the home for fun nose-work.

• Socialization is essential every day! Set up play dates in building lobbies or at a friend’s place. Cold weather can lead to isolation, which is not good for social animals like dogs. Everyone needs their buddies!

• One of Kate’s favorite activities is teaching dogs to spin on a towel after coming in from wet, snowy days. It’s fun and very practical to wipe their feet off without you having to do it. (And especially for those dogs that don’t like their paws being touched.) You can then combine both a spin and rollover trick on the towel. And voila! Your dog has dried itself off on the towel. This trick is featured in Kate’s book, Training for Both Ends Of The Leash, which is available on amazon.com. It’s an easy-read and a lot of fun.

A HEALTHIER POOCH

During the winter months, you often run into health or wellness issues with your dog because they can’t exercise as much or don’t want to be outside in the freezing cold for more than a few minutes at a time. Try these tips for a healthier pooch during the winter months:

• Make sure that your building is using petfriendly snow melt or salt. If it isn’t, or you walk your dog around the city streets, you should consider a barrier for their paws, like pet boots (i.e., PAWZ Boots) or wax (i.e., Mixlab, Mushers, etc.). You should also contact your building’s management to see if they will switch to pet-friendly snow melt.

• Be careful when walking through puddles, curb “ponds,” and snowbanks because of potential dangers hidden underneath. The temperature of the water can do actual harm to paws.

• If it’s cold for you, it’s cold for your pet. If it’s really cold, ensure they have a coat or insulated barrier like a fleece or heavy sweater.

• If their activity level is less because of the weather, you should monitor calorie intake like humans. You may want to consider feeding them a little less food or cutting back on treats so that they can maintain that runway figure!

• If it’s a dry season, use olive oil in their food and consider extra bathing with a conditioner. You need to keep their coat shiny. Along those lines, also monitor nail length, as you may need to get them trimmed more often.

Living in New York City is hard enough for our pets, but these tips will help you through the year’s colder months. As a rule of PAW, always remember that if it is too cold for you, regardless of their fur coat, it is too cold for them to be outside for long periods. It’s better to rug up and stay warm than be too cold!

Bear in mind during this tme of year, our fellow New Yorkers travel with their furrever ones to snowy parts of the region for skiing and other winter activities. The same rules and suggestions apply when it comes to travel during the winter. You always want to make sure that you are taking the aforementioned essentials on the road with you to ensure that you don’t end up at a local vet or animal ER. One last suggestion: if you are traveling to ski regions, and the forecast calls for a heavy wintery mix or excessively cold temperatures, please consider having a family member or friend stay with your furrever one in your home. The last thing you want to put your pet through is suffering in a place that they are not familiar with. While this can be a costly idea, it is also something that can save your pet’s life.

DAWNA CAMPBELL: THE MIND WHISPERER

In a world where financial anxiety and scarcity mindsets often hold people back from reaching their full potential, Dawna Campbell stands as a beacon of transformation. Known as “The Mind Whisperer,” Campbell’s journey from personal devastation to spiritual enlightenment offers a powerful blueprint for those seeking to bridge the gap between financial success and emotional well-being.

Twenty years ago, following a near-death experience, Campbell made a life-altering promise that would eventually impact countless lives. After facing her perfect storm of health crises, divorce, and financial ruin, she found herself drawn to an ashram where ancient wisdom would merge with her modern financial expertise. This unique combination would become the foundation of her groundbreaking approach to abundance.

In this intimate conversation, Campbell shares her insights on transforming fear into financial success, the profound connection between emotional well-being and prosperity, and practical steps anyone can take to shift from scarcity to abundance.

Tell our readers more about your story.

After a near-death experience, I made a promise to dedicate my life to healing—not just for myself, but to help others overcome the challenges that keep them from living fully. My story began in a place of profound struggle. Within just a few years, I faced crippling health issues, the heartbreak of divorce, and financial devastation. It felt as though my entire life had unraveled.

Seeking answers, I moved to an ashram, a spiritual living community. There, I learned to quiet the outside world’s noise and listen to the wisdom within. In that stillness, I realized healing is not just physicality; it’s an alignment of the mind, heart, and soul. What I didn’t expect was how rediscovering myself would lead me to combine my background in finance with holistic healing.

How can someone start transforming fear into financial success?

Fear is the inability to recognize love in the moment. While natural fear, like the instinct to protect ourselves during a natural disaster—is designed to keep us safe, conditioned fear often holds us back. Conditioned fears, such as fear of failure, rejection, or success, are learned patterns rooted in past experiences. These fears create emotional and energetic blocks that paralyze us, preventing the flow of abundance.

To transform fear into financial success, it’s essential to acknowledge and address it. Fear is simply energy, and through a process I call DiRT—Discover, Identify, Release, Transform— you can shift this energy. First, you discover the fear and bring it to awareness. Then, you identify the underlying emotion that fuels it, often tied to unworthiness or old conditioning. Once you release the lower vibration of fear, you can transform it into higher states of trust, gratitude, and faith.

When you align with love instead of fear, you open the doors to abundance. Practices like gratitude, heart-centered meditation, and reframing conditioned beliefs help create this shift, allowing you to move from paralysis to empowerment and attract financial success naturally

The Abundant Soul, takes readers on a journey to creating abundance in their lives. Elaborate on how emotional well-being influences financial prosperity.

Emotional well-being is the foundation of financial prosperity because our emotions directly shape our beliefs, decisions, and the energy we project. Money is deeply emotional— how we feel about ourselves, whether we believe we are worthy, valued, or “enough,” reflects how money responds to us. Emotions like fear, doubt, and disbelief create energetic blocks that prevent financial flow, while higher emotions like trust, gratitude, and joy open the door to abundance.

In my own life, I learned that healing the internal world within us creates lasting change in the external world. When I hit rock bottom—struggling with health, divorce, and financial devastation, I realized that my external circumstances reflected my internal state. My outer world shifted as I released the energy holding me back and aligned my subconscious mind with love, trust, and gratitude. By healing emotions within, we open to our power and can create prosperity, happiness, and love in every area of life.

As “The Mind Whisperer,” what techniques do you instruct people?

One of the most powerful techniques I teach is breathing practice I learned from a yogic healer. This method is a conscious way to create transformation in the immediate moment by calming the mind and shifting the energy within the body. The technique is simple yet highly effective: as you inhale, you focus on a positive word or intention, such as “peaceful abundance,” visualizing the oxygen filling your body. On the exhale, you release stress and negative energy, letting go of a word or emotion that no longer serves you, like “fear” or “doubt.”

This practice works by giving the brain something to focus on, which naturally quiets the chatter and helps drop you into a meditative state. It also guides the body into alpha-theta brain wave patterns, where the subconscious becomes more receptive to reprogramming. When paired with the DiRT Process—Discover, Identify, Release, Transform—it helps clear stuck energy and elevate your emotional state, creating alignment and empowering you to attract abundance in the present moment. It’s a conscious, immediate tool for transformation that centers you in both mind and heart.

How can someone shift from scarcity to abundance?

A powerful way to make this shift is by starting with gratitude. When you actively focus on what you already have, no matter how small, you begin to train your mind to see abundance rather than lack. Pair this with intentional breathing techniques that ground you in the present moment, allowing you to release stress and invite clarity. Another step is to consciously replace negative self-talk or limiting beliefs with affirmations of worthiness and abundance, such as, “I am enough” or “Abundance flows to me effortlessly.”

What’s one step you recommend to clear financial fears?

Creating awareness is the key to clearing financial fears. A straightforward step is to set an alarm on your phone to go off randomly during the day. When it does, pause and assess how you feel in that moment. Are you feeling stressed, worried, or calm? This practice is designed to create awareness of your emotional state because we are often taught not to feel—and the most challenging part of this process is often identifying the specific emotion you are experiencing.

MY NEW YORK STORY

TARA CANNISTRACI: CELEBRATING LIFE WITH HUMOR

Words reflect who we are, and standup comedian, actress, and writer Tara Cannistraci understands that better than anyone. As an Italian American from the Bronx, Tara is well known for discussing Italian New Yorkers’ unique ways of talking. She frequently performs standup routines at comedy clubs across North America and Canada, has been the scoreboard host for the Yankees, and was featured on SNY’s award-winning show, “Oh Yeah!”

A rising social media star, Tara has garnered over 200,000 followers by sharing the words she grew up with, doing on-the-street interviews throughout NYC in her YouTube series Bouroughbreds, and hosting her weekly podcast, Cawfee Tawk with Tara Cannistraci.

I chatted with Tara about the classic female comedians who influenced her, how she balances authenticity in her standup and social media work, and what’s next for her.

Growing up, in retrospect, do you look back and say, “Oh, this all makes sense now. Yep, I had this poignant moment when I was little where I knew I’d be in comedy”?

There was a moment when I knew I’d be in comedy. I found myself drawn to The Carol Burnett Show and I Love Lucy. I lived with my grandparents—many New York Italians did—and they would watch those shows. I also put on one-woman shows in my living room. The New York Italian came into play more recently when I realized that just being who I was, my most authentic self, was relatable. It sounds so corny because you hear about it constantly, but that was the secret. People want to feel like they’re being represented. When I’m a New York Italian, I also represent people who moved out of New York and feel like their family in Chicago, Rhode Island, or Canada sounds like me. You don’t realize how universal you are when you’re so specific.

When I’m a New York Italian, I also represent people who moved out of New York and feel like their family in Chicago, Rhode Island, or Canada sounds like me. You don’t realize how universal you are when you’re so specific.

I’m curious when you started to see that it’s okay to have this heavy accent?

A few years ago, I got nostalgic one day. Somebody said a word I hadn’t heard in a long time, and I felt like these words I grew up hearing had an expiration date on them. They were words that my family members would say. I took the phone, put it up to my face, said, “These are words and phrases I heard growing up in my New York Italian neighborhood,” and posted the video. I thought nothing of it.

Then my husband came home and I asked, “Did you see that video I posted? Was it stupid?” And he goes, “Yeah, take it down.” And I was like, “Oh my God, it was,” and I went to grab my phone to take it down and it had 100,000 views. At the time, I didn’t even have that big of a following like now. I was like, “Wait, something’s happening.” Then it had 300,000 views. I realized a lot of people felt the same way I did. They’re just like me, reminiscing about where we came from.

With your growing social media following, how do you stay authentic to who you are while still adapting to all these trends and algorithms?

It’s such a full-time job. I love connecting and engaging with people I normally wouldn’t have been able to, but I wasn’t so savvy with social media. You really need to curate your own audience. The clubs don’t care if you’re funny, they care if you can sell tickets. It’s the reality of the business I’m in right now. So, for me, I have committed to not being goal-focused. I’m not going to look at the number of followers, I’m going to focus on the systems. I will put out what I think my audience would like and try to follow certain trends, but I stick with what’s worked: being a New York Italian.

You’ve worked with a ton of amazing comedians. Have they given you advice that stands out and has helped you grow?

Joey Diaz called me a few weeks ago and said, “There’s plenty of funny comics that can’t sell tickets. What are you doing to connect with your audience? They need to know more about you.” That’s when I started Cawfee Tawk, my podcast, where for 10 minutes every Monday morning, with a cup of coffee in my hand, I share more personal things than I’ve ever shared before, which is a new thing for me.

Josh Wolf told me, too, “The more specific you are, the more you stay true to who you are, the bigger your audience is going to grow. Do you think you’re limiting yourself? You’re not. You’re really expanding your audience.” Getting that cosign from somebody so successful and talented like Josh made me think, “All right, I could do this.”

Let’s talk briefly about when you worked with the Yankees fans. Are there any takeaways that help set you up for your career now? Living in front of 50,000 people, believe it or not, is easier than standup comedy—getting on stage by yourself to make strangers laugh simultaneously, is harder. You see them, you’re right there, and nobody else is talking to you. With interviewing fans, and standup, you must be able to improvise, and I can, so that helps me out. As far as comedy is concerned, you never know what you’ll get.

Mentally, how do you stay in the zone in those moments?

Staying in the zone when you’re not connecting with an audience is hard, especially if it’s standup. The thing that’s been able to help me the most is to face the fact that it’s never about me. I have an obligation to those people. People had to leave their house and spend money on tickets. Some of my audience had to get a babysitter. They could be going through really hard times. They deserve my best. I’ve got to cater to them and not make it about me. So that helps, shifting the responsibility from “Why don’t they think this is funny?” to “What do I need to do to make these people laugh?”

What do you have coming up that you’re excited about?

The residency in Canada is exciting. It’s in Niagara Falls, and it’s so centrally located—it’s like a destination trip. People go there for the casino, the Falls—there are things to do. I can branch out and get exposure from people from different cities.

TIME OUT WITH…

MAURICIO MARTINEZ: FROM MONTERREY TO BROADWAY

Mexican theater star Mauricio Martinez, known for his powerful tenor voice and compelling stage presence, has been known to American and Mexican theater audiences for years. This year, Mauricio is adding another new talent to his repertoire—he is writing his remarkable journey in an upcoming autobiography. The memoir, tentatively titled My First Act, will chronicle his path from a young performer in Monterrey to becoming one of the few Mexican actors to star on Broadway. The book is scheduled for worldwide release this year.

Martinez’s rise in theater began in Mexico, where he established himself as a leading performer in musical theater. His versatility and talent led him to starring roles in Mexican productions of international musicals including Beauty and The Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Last Five Years. Additionally, he built a successful career in television, becoming a popular cast member in popular telenovelas.

MUSIC IS HIS PASSION

His most significant breakthrough came with his Broadway debut in On Your Feet! The Story of Gloria & Emilio Estefan, where he portrayed Emilio Estefan. This achievement marked him as only the fifth Mexican actor to star on Broadway, a milestone that helped pave the way for other Latin American performers in American theater. His portrayal of Estefan earned critical acclaim, with reviewers praising his ability to capture the legendary music producer’s emotional depth and charismatic spirit.

Now, Martinez is channeling his artistic energy into My First Act, a memoir that promises to be both a professional retrospective and a deeply personal narrative. The book will accompany a musical companion album featuring Martinez’s signature vocals narrating his life’s soundtrack. This unique format allows him to share his story through written words and songs, creating a rich, multi-faceted experience.

In the memoir, Martinez tackles challenging subjects with remarkable candor, including his four battles with bladder cancer and his experiences with depression. Rather than dwelling on these obstacles, he frames them as part of a larger story of resilience and perseverance. The book will also feature previously unreleased material, including unpublished song lyrics that offer intimate glimpses into his creative process.

HE’LL NEVER GIVE UP

“I’m writing this book to inspire others to fight for their dreams and heal their inner child,” Martinez explains. It’s about never giving up, no matter the challenges, and always remembering where you come from so you know where to go.” The recent loss of his beloved sister has prompted him to reflect deeply on his legacy, and he views this memoir as an essential part of his artistic contribution.

The project extends beyond personal storytelling to embrace a larger mission. Martinez plans to use proceeds from the book, audiobook, and companion album to establish scholarships for children studying the arts. “The arts should be accessible to all, not just the privileged few,” he emphasizes, demonstrating his commitment to nurturing the next generation of artists.

The memoir will be published in English and Spanish, ensuring its broad appeal across cultures. Readers can experience Martinez’s journey in traditional paperback or digital formats or through his own voice in the audiobook version.

To support this personal project and help fund scholarships for young Mexican artists, Martinez has launched a GoFundMe campaign, inviting supporters to help make arts education more accessible to aspiring performers.

Through My First Act, Mauricio Martinez offers more than an autobiography—he provides a blueprint for aspiring artists and dreamers everywhere. His journey from Monterrey to Broadway is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of cultural representation, and the transformative impact of the arts on individual lives and communities. The combined release of his memoir and musical companion in late 2025 significantly contributes to theatrical literature and Latin American artistic heritage.

THE FINAL WORD

NEW YEAR, NEW HOPE: WHY SUICIDE PREVENTION IS IMPORTANT

While I wouldn’t say I like starting a new year on such a dark topic, sometimes you can only get to the light by going through the darkness. What I have done is spend considerable time in my life dealing with a very dark, serious and scary topic that far too many people are afraid of even discussing. Suicide.

Yes, ending one’s life, especially the desire, is far more prevalent than most realize or understand. Recently, I lost a friend of a professional nature to suicide, which reminded me of why it’s so important to discuss this taboo topic openly. When I started writing this column, I promised all of you that I would give you the brutal truth about whatever topic was on the table. And this one is a doozy, so hang on to your hats—it will be a wild ride.

Since I was 12 years old, I have lost dozens of people to suicide. Yes, dozens. Be it classmates from any of the absurdly pretentious private schools I attended, girls I had dated, friends from the club scene or just life in general, I have seen far too many surrender their lives for whatever darkness they were enduring. According to estimates based on the last five years, just over 13 million people seriously considered suicide and 1.6 million committed the act. That means just under 4% of this nation wanted to end their life with half of a percent following through.

LIFE IS PRECIOUS

At one point, I believed I would not live to see my 18th birthday for many reasons. And I did try to make sure that the tempting of fate came to fruition. Yes, I have attempted to end my life. I could not be more thankful that I am one of the over 700,000 Americans who survive suicide attempts every year. Just so we are being 100% transparent, I aborted my last attempt before it was too late because I realized what so many had been telling me for far too long—that my life is worth living.

Do I condone suicide? No. I do condone open conversation about it, though. In 2025, I find it appalling that so many take extreme measures to avoid the subject. Even just talking about it with those closest. There is no shame in being so desperate that you want to give up. The only shame I could see in that is not learning from an attempt that life is worth living. I fear that so many don’t openly discuss this topic. Without conversation, solutions are never presented. After all, suicidal tendencies have existed since the dawn of humanity. So why the taboo in the 21st century? Because so many fear the end and don’t want to be reminded just how fragile our lives are. Others want to continue sticking their heads in the sand, thinking everything is roses and unicorns.

Millions of people who suffer from depression can become suicidal. Yes, I do suffer from a form of depression. It is not constant, nor is it overriding in my psyche. Sometimes, getting my head out of that frame of mind is difficult, but I work hard to remind myself that there are many things worth living for. I try to focus on what makes life enjoyable, like love, great meals, and adventures. No, I am not suicidal. However, I am human and sometimes we make mistakes.

But as I said, there is no shame in that. The only shame I see is that people are missing the opportunity to get the relief and psychiatric care they need to resolve their problems because they are too afraid that they will appear weak or unreliable.

THE FINAL WORD

In 2025, we need to end the stigma that comes with depression and suicidal tendencies. We must empower those who need help to seek it out without fear of repercussions and damage to their lives, should they choose to live. Suicide is a part of life. It’s time we embrace that to help those so clearly in need. I know the teenage me would have been grateful for that kind of help all those decades ago.

If you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or dial 988 from any phone to be connected to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. All calls are confidential.

My friends here’s to a bright, beautiful, and enjoyable 2025 together! Slainte!
