SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

2025 IS THE YEAR OF BEST FRIENDS ANIMAL SOCIETY

New year. New focus. Same passion. Pet Lifestyles Magazine is proud to declare and celebrate 2025 as the Year of Best Friends Animal Society and their No-Kill Nation goal!

To celebrate, just for 2025, each edition of the magazine will have a new “Best Friends Animal Society” section that focuses solely on the iconic animal welfare organization, its network partners of rescues and shelters, as well as their various Lifesaving Centers. We are renaming our Rescue section to Save Them All to reflect our commitment to supporting Best Friends’ mission and No-Kill Nation goal in 2025.

It is because of Best Friends’ passion and dedication to “Save Them All” that we are introducing this new section, and the rename, for 2025. I have received a few questions about this endeavor already, so I wanted to tackle this in the upfront; this is not a paid partnership. Best Friends Animal Society is not paying us to create this effort. We are doing this because it is the right thing to do and because we believe so strongly in both their mission, and their efforts to bring the United States to No-Kill status.

In 2025, our readers will also meet new official partners of the magazine who will provide expert content and advice for your furrever ones. We will also introduce new advertisers and sponsors who we are working with to help increase adoptions through events and promotional programming.

2025 looks to be a Pawesome year for the pet community and we cannot be more excited to be a part of it!

Stay pawesome!

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Now that 2025 is officially underway, it’s time to make sure you’re keeping up with your most important resolutions making this short month long on memories. And like most New Yorkers, I’ve never been a huge fan of winter. Once February arrives, I start thinking of warmer months.

Thanks to this issue, I’ve gained a new appreciation and learned there are many ways to make it all yours. For instance, there are a host of ways to spice things up for Valentine’s Day from a dinner for two at a new restaurant. See our restaurant picks for the special day. Or perhaps book a massage at your favorite city spa. Downtown or uptown, there’s a treatment waiting just for you.

February can bring bountiful pleasures in other ways: We’ve listed romantic vacation spots and a host of happenings around the city.

For this issue we met with fabulous people who make this world a better place. What we found with these individuals is that they love their work with a passion. We feature M. Cacao A Chocolatier That Will Make You Fall in Love.

There we have it! A short month, indeed, but long on memorable moments. I hope you find this February issue informative and entertaining. Wherever February 2025 takes you, remember to focus on what really matters during this month of all things love..

See you next issue.

Imagine yourself reclining on the sandy white beaches, soaking in the volcanic mud baths of Soufrière, ziplining through lush rainforests, indulging in authentic island food, club-hopping on the Rodney Bay strip, and riding ATVs through the countryside. Envision exploring abandoned sugar plantations, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, chasing brightly colored fish in the shadow of the Pitons, or experiencing a live sea turtle hatching in the last light of dusk.

Equal parts beauty and mystique, Saint Lucia captivates anyone who sets foot on her coastline. Always evocative, she welcomes visitors with her soothing waves, warm beaches, and hospitable people. The only sovereign nation to be named for a woman, the island personifies adventure and inspiration. Her visitors invariably find themselves reluctant to leave and eager to return. Your Next Adventure Awaits....

WHAT IS VALENTINE’S DAY?

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE CHERUB

Much like the political divide, people either love or hate Valentine’s Day. The evidence in support of such a statement is blatantly obvious from the sentiment seen on social media. There are those who love Valentine’s Day, and those who either abstain or just don’t like it. This is especially poignant in the 21st century as there are many people who would rather just celebrate their platonic friendships than their romantic ones around this day. But this is not a new phenomenon. As an example, in decades prior, you could clearly see the divide between love and hate for February 14 in teen and twenty-something popular TV shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Party of Five, and more. Whether you love or hate it, Cupid’s special day is upon us. But how exactly did this day become what it has?

To be honest, and fair, no one really knows. The genesis of Valentine’s Day has more fake news behind it than the sheer volume of UFO sightings and military drone movements over New Jersey last month. In other words, there are a lot of theories, and there is some semblance of historical evidence, but nothing that definitively tells us why Valentine’s Day was created. At least not compared to holidays like Christmas, Hannukah, Easter, etc.

So rather than wax poetically for two pages about the history of what has become known as the “Hallmark Holiday of Love,” we felt giving our readers a synopsis of come of the history, as well as today’s translation of Valentine’s Day, might be more informative, interesting, and fun.

LOVE CAN BE DEADLY

Ironically, many of the genesis stories around Valentine’s Day are based in martyrdom. And given “The Bard’s” tale of Romeo and Juliet, you can understand why some of those tales may actually be true. Bear in mind that Saint Valentine is the clear front-runner in who the day is named for given his involvement in the vast majority of legendary tales. Some of these martyrdom stories connected to February 14 include legends of the imprisonment of Saint Valentine of Rome for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century.

To add further biblical, or holy reference to it, Saint Valentine allegedly restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer. There are also numerous later additions to Valentine lore that have a far deeper connection to the theme of love including that tradition maintains that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry in defiance of the Roman emperor, which led to Valentine’s execution. There is even an 18th-century elaboration on the legend that claims Valentine wrote his jailer’s daughter a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell before his execution.

THE FEAST OF SAINT VALENTINE

They say that there is some truth to every myth or legend. Given the aforementioned lore, you can see where so many elements of Cupid’s special day come into modern day parlance, and tradition. So, let’s take a look even further into the background of how we celebrate what was once referred to as, and sometimes still is, “The Feast of Saint Valentine.”

According to Wikipedia:

The 8th-century Gelasian Sacramentary recorded the celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14. The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries, when notions of courtly love flourished, apparently by association with the “lovebirds” of early spring. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion for couples to express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. In the 19th century, handmade cards gave way to mass-produced greetings. In Italy, Saint Valentine’s keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart”, as well as to children to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine’s Malady).

THE MODERN VERSION

Knowing the background of such an occasion, and at least a portion of the myths around its genesis, how do you end up with a global population so divided on a day meant to celebrate the one human emotion most spend their lives seeking – love? It’s called being human. Yes, you have people who do not care for romantic interaction in their lives and prefer to live on friendships and family alone. They usually remain agnostic with respect to our fat little cherub. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However, if you follow pop culture in any way, you will note that it is in the younger mindset of our culture that a disdain for Cupid usually comes from. And more often than not, that “hate” is driven by a recent dramatic romantic breakup. Then there are those that believe that Valentine’s Day is outdated and can be construed as misogynistic. In this writer’s humble opinion, I think the latter is taking political correctness a step too far. After all, when it comes to the battle of the sexes, love is the great equalizer. We all love in our own way, but it is love, nonetheless. The only thing that may be outdated is that fat little, often naked, cherub with a bow and arrow. While adorable on every level, maybe a more modern icon for Valentine’s Day is needed.

In other words, isn’t the point of Valentine’s Day to express and enjoy this all too powerful emotion in all of its forms? After all, there is a reason why chocolatiers, flower shops, and greeting card companies make the level of money they do around February 14: because people want to celebrate their love for one another.

And let’s not forget the centuries of drama, comedy and romance all centered around what love is: the ultimate expression of human emotion.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

M.CACAO FEATURES

A CHOCOLATIER THAT WILL MAKE YOU FALL IN LOVE

I’ve spent virtually my entire life surrounded by the culinary glitterati. I’ve met, and worked with, the best in the business from chefs to bakers to pitmasters. But when it came to chocolate, that, for me, was always a different animal. My fondness for amazing chocolate has always been without boundary. But I had never met a chocolatier that truly set my heart on fire and pushed my soul to sweet surrender. That is until now. Meet M. Cacao.

This sweet enterprise in Massachusetts was presented to me during a virtual press roundup of brands for Valentine’s Day. While I was a little apprehensive at first, given the aforementioned comment about chocolate, I quickly figured out (especially since I only had a few minutes with them) that this was no ordinary chocolatier and company.

Michael Nichols, a former robotics engineer, and Chef Delphin Gomes are the owners of M. Cacao. Their genuine approach to both the craft and business of chocolate are literally the ingredients of legend. That is only surpassed by the incredible flavors, quality of product and creative flare with which they create and sell their chocolates. Trust me when I tell you that you will be hearing more and more about these two mad geniuses in my Great Bites column throughout the year.

In this February edition of our magazine, you will find them present in the Life & Style Gift Guide as well as in my Great Bites column for a couple of examples of their creativity. First off, I have to say, their Hearts & Roses Collection chocolates quite literally melt in your mouth and leave you wanting so many more. The flavor is spot on. The quality of the chocolate is divine. And the packaging is just stunning. The same is true for their Salts of the World Collection and the many other assortments they’ve created (I don’t want to spoil it all for you!).

The only thing I can really say to explain the experience you happily endure from that first bite to the last is that if I worked with them, I would be in Chocolate Eaters Anonymous faster than you can say YUMMO!

I recently had a chance to speak with Michael and Chef Delphin. But given the level of expertise, creativity and passion for which they operate M. Cacao, I have decided to hold off until another issue to publish the interview. Yes, it is that good and they are that amazing. In the meantime, I will leave you with a little teaser.

Chef: We wanted to create something that didn’t just follow tradition but advanced it. Chocolate is an art form, a science, and an experience—and at M. Cacao, we fuse those elements together in ways that surprise and delight. My background in classical French pastry and chocolate-making, combined with Mike’s experience in robotics and engineering, gives us a completely different perspective on what chocolate can be.

Michael: Most chocolatiers focus on making pretty chocolates, with pretty standard flavors. We focus on creativity and innovation—whether that’s infusing unexpected flavors like cheese or global salts into our chocolates, combining chocolate with gifting a piece of yourself with our Expressio, or crafting ArtBars with flavors inspired by beautiful, edible artwork.

Chef: At the heart of what we do is the desire to create something both unique and truly great—not just in terms of taste, but in the way we engage people with chocolate. We believe chocolate should be more than just a treat; it should be an experience, a conversation, and a memory in the making. That’s what inspires us every day.

This writer could not have said it better himself. Yes, I am a fanboy. They earned it. Trust me when I tell you that if you like chocolate, you are going to love M. Cacao!

AFFAIRS OF THE URBAN HEART

A EXPERT’S PERSPECTIVE ON LOVE IN NYC

February is the month to find and be loved. But the roadway to deep, love can be a cumbersome one and often include bumps, potholes, sometimes even pitfalls. New York psychologist Dr. Nicole Andreoli specializes in relationship concerns and often works with couples to create or repair interpersonal bonds so that they can maintain the most healthful love life possible. We asked her to break down the most common stages in coupledom.

FINDING LOVE

How can someone maintain a balance between their career ambitions and a desire for a serious, fulfilling relationship in a city that never sleeps?

Balancing career ambitions and a fulfilling relationship in a bustling city like New York can be challenging, but it’s achievable with some strategies.

First and foremost, it’s important to identify and set clear priorities around what matters most to you in both your career and relationship. From there, it is important to be intentional with how you spend your time, ensuring that your behaviors and choices align with your goals and priorities. Once your priorities are identified, clear and honest communication about your intentions and boundaries is important.

Time management is an important, yet often overlooked aspect of maintaining boundaries. Be purposeful with how you allocate your time, scheduling dedicated time for both your career and your relationship. This may involve setting boundaries at work to prioritize personal time. With dating, focus on the quality of the time you spend together rather than just the quantity.

Is there a unique dating dynamic in NYC among people from different cultural backgrounds?

Dating in NYC with people from different cultural backgrounds is such a unique experience, thanks to the city’s diversity and vibrancy. Intercultural relationships are common and can be enriching, but they often require navigating differences in communication styles, traditions, or family expectations. The city’s hustle-culture also influences dating, as many prioritize careers over relationships, which might not always align with cultural norms around marriage or starting a family. Misunderstandings can pop up too, especially around things such as how affection is expressed or differing views on gender roles, but these can be addressed with open communication.

STAYING IN LOVE

What are some of the most common reasons couples begin to drift apart?

Dr John Gottman is a renowned psychologist and relationship expert. I’ve always found his research on relationships to be incredibly insightful. His work shows that relationships don’t fail because of one big event, but rather due to a series of small, accumulated factors that slowly erode emotional connection and trust. Couples who fail to address these issues over time may find themselves growing apart. Some of the biggest contributors based on his research include lack of emotional connection. Over time, couples can become emotionally distant if they stop sharing their feelings, thoughts, and experiences with each other. This lack of emotional intimacy can lead to a feeling of disconnection, where partners no longer feel understood or valued.

How can couples keep romance alive?

To help keep romance alive in long-term relationships, I recommend the following seven tips (based on Gottman’s research):

❦Maintain a Love Map Continuously update your understanding of your partner’s inner world—know their hopes, dreams, fears, and daily experiences. Regularly ask questions and show genuine curiosity about their life.

❦Turn Toward Each Other Pay attention to “bids for connection,” which are small moments where your partner seeks your attention, affection, or support. Respond to these bids consistently to foster emotional closeness.

❦Keep the Spark Alive This could mean trying new activities together, surprising each other with small gestures, or rekindling physical intimacy.

How does maintaining individual passions and goals contribute to a stronger, more connected relationship?

In relationships, partners play a key role in supporting each other’s growth by encouraging new experiences, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities for development.

When we focus on expanding who we are, it not only gives us a deeper sense of personal fulfillment but can also strengthen our connection with our partner. One of the best ways to do this is by maintaining individual passions and goals. Pursuing the things that light you up enriches your life and brings fresh energy, ideas, and excitement into the relationship. It keeps things dynamic and engaging.

Love, especially in long-term relationships, is not just about initial excitement or romantic feelings; it’s also about choosing to show care, respect, kindness, and support for your partner, even when the initial feelings may fade or become less intense. In this sense, love is an ongoing choice to prioritize your partner’s well-being, communicate effectively, work through challenges, and keep the relationship strong, even during difficult times.

LAKE TAHOE ADVENTURES

WHERE EVERY SEASON IS HEAVENLY

Winter, spring, summer, fall, there’s one destination that indeed does it all to perfection. Lake Tahoe is that heavenly place where a deep blue lake takes center stage. Mostly in California (a third of it is in Nevada), Lake Tahoe has long been where Westerners play in a gorgeous setting. Surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Lake Tahoe is the highest alpine lake in the United States, the tenth deepest lake in the world, and perhaps the most beautiful.

SKIING & MORE

Wintertime is a spectacular time of year in Lake Tahoe, as big dumps of mountain snow combine with the region’s yearly recording of 300 days of sun. South Lake Tahoe is the epicenter of the lake’s action all year round, with Heavenly Ski Resort dominating the winter scene. The massive mountain is over 10,000 feet high, annually gets over 250 feet of snow, and extends to California and Nevada, with two base areas in each state. Skiers and snowboarders find perfect power there virtually every season.

Heavenly is the one that is right in the center of the action, surrounded by hotels, restaurants, casinos, and more. Still, numerous other slightly more remote ski-snowboard resorts are also in the mountains surrounding the lake. Palisades Tahoe, on the northwestern side of the lake, is the other world-famous ski center. It hosted the 1960 Winter Olympics (when the resort was called Squaw Valley) and today combines two legendary mountains offering runs that seem to go on forever. Gentler, family-friendly ski centers include Homewood Mountain Resort, Grandlibakken Ski and Sled Hill, Sierra-at-Tahoe, and Diamond Peak Resort.

The snow season usually lasts here at least through May, giving you the chance to also try cross-country skiing, snow tubing (so much fun!), snowshoeing, and ice skating. Skating doesn’t often happen on Lake Tahoe, however, because the lake is so deep it doesn’t freeze; bring your skates and try Sawmill Pond for an authentic alpine experience, or rent a pair to hit the Ice Skating at Heavenly Village or Edgewood on Ice right in the heart of South Lake Tahoe. You can even try a “polar paddle” on the lake using a clear-bottomed kayak (book at Clearly Tahoe Tours)!

YEAR-ROUND FUN

While there’s usually still snow in the mountains in the spring, the melt-off begins, too, which means hiking trails offer up waterfalls, the lake is ready for warm days of standup paddleboarding and kayaking (although the water is still pretty chilly), and by May the many picturesque golf courses that dot the lakeside are open for play. Edgewood Tahoe Resort on the Nevada side has a stunning setting and two fine dining spots for post-play enjoyment, with Brooks’ Bar & Deck overlooking the course and the lake.

Summer brings all that and more, adding mountain biking, alpine hiking, and Heavenly’s seriously exciting adventures. Take the Heavenly gondola to find zip lining, summer tubing, and the Ridge Rider Coaster, a wild ride down the mountain. Or hit one of the beaches that dot the lake for sun and a swim, play beach volleyball at Zephyr Cove Beach, and charter a fishing boat for an angler’s perfect day on the lake. We love the Tahoe Tastings wine tour on the lake, riding in their gorgeous 1953 Chris Craft Venetian water taxi, and seeing Emerald Cove and Vikingsholm Castle while sipping on eight fine wines as you go. Now that’s the Tahoe summer good life!

WHERE TO STAY

For a gorgeous condo-style villa in South Lake Tahoe, check out The Marriott Vacation Clubs offerings at Marriott’s Timber Cove and Grand Residence. Both are ideally situated at the base of Heavenly’s gondola (it is literally out their doors) and are part of the Marriott vacation ownership brand, which includes their Sheraton and Westin Vacation Clubs. The clubs are designed for people to buy into the system and then use points to stay in any of the 90+ worldwide properties included in the clubs.

At both Tahoe resorts, the villas are large and luxurious, with living rooms, fireplaces, full kitchens up to three bedrooms (if needed), and plenty of amenities, all with no resort fees. Beyond the gondola right out the door, you’re in the midst of Heavenly Village, with restaurants, shops, clubs, outdoor music performances, and more within easy walking distance, including the lake itself and casinos like Harvey’s, where Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen is cooking up classic British fare including a spectacular Beef Wellington.

If you’re not an owner in The Marriott Vacation Clubs, you can still book a stay, often at a very attractive nightly rate, by being willing to explore ownership options; villas are available as traditional hotel rentals, depending on availability. However, owners get first crack at bookings in Tahoe (and around the world), so expect it to be tough to find a high-season villa available.

THE INN AT HASTINGS PARK

FOLLOW REVOLUTIONARY FOOTSTEPS IN NEW ENGLAND

f the history of how the United States came to be is a fascination for you (or your school-age children), then 2025 is the year to head up to Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts to discover the place where the American Revolution began.

This year is particularly important, as it marks the 250th anniversary of those fateful days in April 1775, when the British General Thomas Gage sent his troops from Boston to Lexington to arrest the Sons of Liberty, colonists including Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams, who were gathered there. On April 19th, after Revere’s famous warning ride the night before, the Battle of Lexington took place on the village green, the “shot heard round the world” rang out, and the war was on.

Much of this area just north of Boston still looks like it did on those fateful days, including the Inn at Hastings Park, a picturesque place just a few blocks from the Lexington “Battle Green.” It’s a perfect home base for exploring, so nice you might even think twice about leaving.

The Inn at Hastings Park is an award-winning Relais & Chateaux property, opened in 2014 with three historic buildings originally built in the 19th century and lovingly restored with a melding of original elements and modern design.

With only 22 rooms and suites, it’s a cozy yet sophisticated place with a very popular local restaurant called Town Meeting Bistro. Executive Chef Alissa Tsukakoshi offers seasonal dishes that evoke New England’s best as well as a high tea experience that hearkens back to the British influence; plus, the inn’s owner-chef Trisha Perez Kennealy leads numerous culinary events throughout the year, ranging from her Supper Club Series of dinner parties to immersive weekends filled with culinary instruction and degustation.

Everyone at the inn is captivated by the history that surrounds it, so it makes sense that conversations about the Revolutionary War are often overheard. Year round, they offer a beguiling private tour called “Footsteps of the Revolution: A Historical Tour of Lexington and Concord,” complete with a knowledgeable historian-guide and a private driver. And to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the most important event in the region’s history, on April 18, 2025, they will host a Midnight Ride Dinner, followed by a walk to the reenactment of the events of that historic night.

So go for the huge spring celebration, which also happens annually every April beyond this year’s 250th commemoration, or head up in the summer, fall, or even chilly winter to experience Massachusetts’ unique historical significance in the war that made the United States what it is today.

WITNESS 250 YEARS OF HISTORY

The whole region will be abuzz on April 19th, also known as Patriot’s Day, when a huge reenactment of the Battle of Lexington begins at 5:30am on the Battle Green, followed later on (after the pancake breakfasts held all over town) by the Patriot’s Day Parade.

Another battle also took place at the Old North Bridge in Concord, where they’ll have a Patriot’s Day Ball commemorating the 250th anniversary on April 12 as well as the Concord250 celebration on April 19, including a big parade and Minute Men reenacting the Old Bridge skirmish.

And while the fanfare reaches a fever pitch here this April during this landmark year, there’s always much to see in and around Lexington and Concord, with places like the various taverns where men gathered before the fights, the houses where plans were made, cemeteries where the Minute Men were laid to rest, and the Minute Man National Historic Park located between the two famous towns. Plus, both Lexington and Concord have vibrant art galleries, restaurants, and famed writers’ homes (think Emerson, Alcott, and Hawthorne) to visit as well.

EXPLORING FRANCE’S GEMS

A WEEK OF CULINARY & CULTURAL DELIGHTS VIA HIGH-SPEED RAIL

Aweek-long trip to Paris is time enough for three full days and nights in the capital and still have time for visiting some of the other amazing destinations France has to offer. France’s high speed rail system Trains à Grande Vitesse makes it easy.

PARIS

Paris was buzzing this November, as the first Christmas markets opened, seasonal decorations appeared, and snowflakes descended. We visited the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou, admired the view from the rooftop at Galeries Lafayette Haussmann, toured Montmartre—arriving for dinner at Le Moulin de la Galette which Renoir made famous— and listened to Ravel’s Bolero within the church of La Madeleine. Our London cousins met us for the day, via Eurostar, to cruise the Seine on the Bateaux Parisiens and lunch with a view of the Tour Eiffel from Alain Ducasse’s Les Ombres atop the le Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.

We also lunched on foie gras and truffles at Truffes Folies, on an inventive twelve-course vegetarian extravaganza at Alain Passard’s three-star Arpège, near the Rodin Museum, and at restaurant Pierre Gagnaire, the three-star Michelin restaurant within the newly launched Hôtel Balzac, a Relais & Chateaux affiliate, where we stayed.

We dined under an original Eiffel ceiling on an authentic Italian dinner by Chef Baldassare Mazzara’s at Restaurant V in the Hotel Vernet and at Le Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre, which Renoir made famous and viewed the Palais Garnier Opera House from our balcony at Hotel Edouard 7, the lighted Arc du Triomphe. Champs Elysees was just a short stroll from our accommodations in the authentic Haussman style Majestic Hôtel. www.parisjetaime.com

CANNES

Captivating Cannes, my favorite city on the French Riviera is reached in only five hours and four-minutes on a TGV direct from Paris. The city’s lush, palm-lined grand boulevard bordered by palace hotels and designer boutiques and the beach lined Mediterranean Sea. It’s only a short walk to countless cafés boulangeries, patisseries, both daily marchés and the abundance of shops along rue d’Antibes. There’s even a weekend brocante, for vintage finds and antiques.

Savor Italian specialties at Le Vesuvius, sit on the terrace watching the world go by— delight in simple grilled fare at Le Maschou, in Le Suquet, where the steep pedestrian streets of the ancient fisherman’s village lead up from the Vieux Port and wonderfully authentic Provençal specialties at Le Safranier, in nearby Antibes. www.en.cannes-france.com

CHAMPAGNE

The very word Champagne conjures up images of elegant events celebrating with wine made from grapes grown in the region. It’s a 46-minute ride on the direct TGV from Paris to the historic regional capital of Reims, (rhymes with dance). In the old city, Americans — Ford, Rockefeller and Carnegie—helped rebuild the Cathédrale Notre Dame after daily bombing during World War I, from 1914 to 1918; subsequently, Marc Chagall designed its magnificent, biblically themed, stained-glass windows.

Grande Maison champagne houses located in Reims, such as Ruinart, Taittinger, Veuve Clicquot and Vranken Pommery, welcome visitors for tastings and to tour the Roman-era underground multi-storied chalk cellars, called Crayères, which protected citizens during the bombing.

Travel the picturesque, vineyard-bordered, 40-mile Champagne Trail, lined with teeny, historic villages and dozens of small producers. It leads to l’Abbaye d’Hautvillers where Dom Perignon, the Benedictine monk Deus Optimus Maximus (D.O.M.) Pierre Perignon, died in 1715 and is buried and Epernay, the wine capital, where Moët and Chandon and de Vonage are located along the pristine Avenue de Champagne.

In Reims, stay at Domaine Les Crayères, a Relais & Chateaux affiliate, or at La Caserne Chanzy Hotel & Spa, Autograph Collection, which views the cathedral. Alternately, stay in a luxe countryside inn with a spa near Epernay: the 49-room Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa.

LIVING LARGE IN GRAMERCY PARK

A PERFECT BALANCE

Gramercy Park is one of New York City’s most coveted and distinctive neighborhoods. It offers residents an unprecedented blend of historical charm, urban sophistication, and exclusive amenities. As one of only two private parks in New York City, this enclave provides a unique living experience that sets it apart from other Manhattan neighborhoods.

The neighborhood’s crown jewel is the private, two-acre Gramercy Park itself. It was established in 1831 and accessible only to residents of the surrounding buildings who possess one of the highly coveted keys. This verdant sanctuary, meticulously maintained year-round, provides a peaceful retreat from the city’s bustling streets. The park’s manicured lawns and centuries-old trees create a serene environment that residents can enjoy exclusively, making it one of the most privileged addresses in Manhattan.

ARCHITECTURAL SPLENDOR

The architecture surrounding Gramercy Park reflects the neighborhood’s rich history. It features an impressive collection of Victorianera townhouses, pre-war buildings, and Greek Revival mansions. Many structures date back to the mid-1800s, with notable examples including the National Arts Club and The Players Club. These architectural gems have been meticulously preserved, offering residents the opportunity to live in homes that combine historical character with modern amenities.

The neighborhood’s central location provides exceptional convenience for residents. Between East 18th and East 22nd Streets, from Park Avenue South to Third Avenue, Gramercy Park offers easy access to public transportation and is within walking distance of several of Manhattan’s most vibrant areas. Union Square lies just a few blocks west with its famous farmers’ market and retail options. The Flatiron District, NoMad, and the East Village are all within comfortable walking distance, making it an ideal base for work and leisure.

CULTURAL & CULINARY EXCELLENCE

The area boasts an impressive array of dining options, from Michelin-starred restaurants to beloved neighborhood institutions. Pete’s Tavern, New York’s oldest continuously operating restaurant and bar, adds to the neighborhood’s historic charm.

Gramercy Park maintains a reputation as one of Manhattan’s safest neighborhoods, thanks in part to its residential character and strong sense of community. The private park is a natural gathering place for residents, fostering a rare, close-knit atmosphere in New York City. This community extends beyond the park’s iron gates, with local businesses and restaurants often serving as informal meeting spots for neighbors.

HOME VALUE

While property in Gramercy Park commands premium prices, the neighborhood has historically demonstrated a strong appreciation for real estate value. The limited housing stock, the area’s prestige, and the exclusive park access help maintain property values even during market fluctuations. The mix of housing options, from historic townhouses to luxury condominiums and co-ops, provides opportunities for various investment strategies.

The most significant benefit of living in Gramercy Park is its unique balance between urban energy and residential tranquility. While residents enjoy easy access to Manhattan’s vibrant commercial and entertainment districts, the neighborhood maintains a peaceful, almost village-like atmosphere. This combination of convenience and calm is increasingly rare in New York City, making Gramercy Park a truly special place to call home.

Living in Gramercy Park, NYC, is about more than having an address; it’s about embracing a lifestyle that combines elegance, exclusivity, and convenience. With its private park, architectural beauty, cultural richness, and community feel, Gramercy Park is a haven in the heart of New York City.

TOP INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS OF 2025

PERSONAL TOUCHES, NATURAL MATERIALS, BOLD COLORS AND ADAPTABLE FURNITURE ARE HOT THIS YEAR

As we move into 2025, interior design trends are focusing on personalization, bold colors, practical functionality and eye-catching statement pieces. I wanted to share what I see as the key design elements for the year, showing how homes can reflect individual style while being functional.

PERSONAL SPACE: NATURAL MATERIALS

One of the biggest shifts I’m noticing for 2025 is a move toward personal spaces that feel connected to nature, with materials like travertine, alabaster and marble playing a major role. These natural elements bring warmth and character to both furniture and decor, adding depth and a calm, modern feel — especially in urban spaces where a touch of nature can be hard to come by.

With natural textures and subtle tones, materials like travertine and marble offer a sense of calm and sophistication. Alabaster, with its soft translucence, creates gentle lighting effects that add a serene ambiance. I love how these materials not only elevate the aesthetic but also introduce an organic feel that makes a space feel grounded and connected to nature.

The trend toward these materials reflects a simpler, more thoughtful approach to design. More people are seeing their homes as a retreat — a place to relax and recharge. Using natural materials helps create a space that feels both grounded and elegant without feeling overly designed or polished.

MIXING COLORS AND TEXTURES: EARTH TONES WITH WARM NEUTRALS

I’m predicting that warm neutrals like creams, taupes and natural oak textures will continue to be popular in 2025. These neutrals create a balanced, cohesive look that works with any style. But this year, I’m excited to see earthy “burn colors” — deep browns, oranges, reds and yellows — making their way into spaces. These colors add warmth and depth, layering beautifully over neutrals to create a more inviting feel.

This palette, inspired by nature, brings cozy tones with a lively touch. I like using a sofa in burnt yellow or deep red to add a standout piece that doesn’t overpower other natural elements. These colors create a comfortable vibe while keeping the room modern.

Texture is another key element I focus on, with smooth surfaces mixed with tactile fabrics like bouclé, velvet and linen. These fabrics add variety and make spaces feel more welcoming. I like to layer textures thoughtfully, balancing smooth and rougher materials to add depth. Floral prints are also making a comeback in 2025, showing up in art, comforters, wallpapers and upholstery. These patterns bring color and energy to a space and pair perfectly with earthy tones and warm neutrals to create a cozy, comfy look.

FUNCTIONALITY: CUSTOMIZABLE FURNITURE FOR ADAPTABLE

LIVING

With limited space in urban areas, I’m finding that functionality and adaptability are key in 2025 home design. Multifunctional furniture is more important than ever, with a strong focus on flexibility and customization. Many of my clients are looking for ways to maximize their living areas, especially in smaller homes or apartments, and furniture that serves more than one purpose is becoming essential.

I’ve seen customization options expand, making it easier for people to find pieces that fit their exact needs. Coffee tables that convert into dining tables, for example, and extendable dining tables are practical choices that work well in smaller spaces. These pieces let us create an efficient, organized space without sacrificing design or style.

STATEMENT PIECES: VINTAGE FINDS AND BOLD ACCENTS

Statement pieces are a huge trend in 2025, as people want memorable touches in their homes. I’m seeing a strong demand for vintage and antique furniture, which offers unique craftsmanship and character that mass-produced items simply don’t have.

Vintage pieces bring a story and depth to a space, helping create a personalized look. Homeowners are turning to one-of-a-kind items like a vintage sideboard or an antique chair to serve as room centerpieces, adding charm and a touch of nostalgia.

Beyond furniture, I’m seeing bold accents like large plants or statement wallpapers gaining popularity. Plants make a strong visual impact and bring a bit of nature indoors while wallpapers — used creatively on ceilings or framing specific areas — add bold, eye-catching details. Adding these elements lets people bring personality and character to their interiors, creating spaces that feel unique and thoughtfully designed.

RETRO REVIVAL: PLAYFUL COLORS AND RICH TEXTURES

For 2025, I’m seeing a retro-inspired palette of bright colors — yellows, greens and pinks — adding a fun twist to the usual earthy tones and warm neutrals. This “retro funky” style is especially appealing to younger homeowners who want to make a bold statement. Paired with materials like velvet and brass, these colors bring a fresh, eclectic vibe to interiors.

This trend combines playful colors with rich textures to create a lively, inviting atmosphere. I love how a bright green chair or a pink velvet sofa can instantly energize a room. It’s about mixing colors and textures that feel both nostalgic and modern. This approach is a great way to create spaces that feel youthful and stand out.

Overall, the design trends for 2025 encourage personalization, comfort and functionality. From natural materials and warm tones to flexible furniture, vintage accents and bold retro palettes, these trends blend classic and contemporary elements to help people create spaces that are both unique and practical.

Dear Mindie,

With the start of 2025, I want to make some personal changes. I hate my inability to be outgoing. It holds me back from moving up at work and is standing in the way of having a more successful dating life. I get nervous in large crowds and anxious with new people or before a party. I want to change this characteristic but don’t know where to start. I’m holding myself back and feeling hopeless. It’s something I have dealt with for many years. Any advice you can share would be great.

Sincerely, Scared

Dear Scared

It sounds like you could potentially have a social anxiety disorder, which is when you feel nervous in many social situations like those you’re describing. It’s more than the traditional butterflies one typically feels when giving a presentation or going on a date. It’s also known as social phobia and involves feeling unsettled during more everyday interactions, such as the examples you provided.

Most people who suffer from this feel self-conscious that they may be scrutinized or judged negatively by others. To know for sure, you need to see a mental health professional who can give you a proper screening and determine if you meet the criteria. There are ways to change this personality disorder, create new behavioral patterns, and alter your thinking to face this situation more positively and with less fear. First, you need to know if that’s the case.

In the meantime, my DIY advice is to start creating a journal and taking it out when such situations, these uneasy emotions, are present. I’d write down your feelings and the evidence for and against the thoughts and feelings. What proof do you have to back up the anxiety of self-doubt you are experiencing?

Another great way to feel more at ease before you go to parties or larger gatherings is to take part in some breathing exercises beforehand so that you go into the environment feeling more relaxed. It may also help to use some visualization and see yourself in the room, easily conversing with guests, introducing yourself to new people, and smiling.

yourself in the crowd and having a good time will also help combat some of the negative feelings you have been experiencing.

Lastly, take small steps and challenge yourself. For example, you may skip the self-checkout line and instead head over to a cashier at the grocery store so you can converse with the store clerk. Another great way to get out of your comfort zone in a small way is to compliment a co-worker on their outfit and initiate a conversation. These little tweaks to your routine will lead to larger ones. Eventually, you’ll retrain your brain to send more realistic and positive thoughts about your ability to converse, receive acceptance, and ultimately fit in easily.

I wish you the best of luck! Revamping patterns we’ve likely maintained since childhood isn’t easy, but it can be done. With a little hard work and determination, you may soon be drafting me a new advice letter on how to turn down invitations; your mailbox is inundated with new friends.

Love,

ALICE

AN ITALIAN SEAFOOD & LOBSTER BAR IN A STUNNING WEST VILLAGE TOWNHOUSE

Alice (pronounced “Ah-Lee-Chay”), is located right in the heart of the West Village just a 10-minute walk from Union Square. It’s on a quiet tree-lined street with stunning Federal style townhouses; Alice takes up the whole first floor of one of these townhouses including the former backyard which has been enclosed with a huge skylight on the ceiling. It’s cozy and chic and you’ll wish that you lived there the second you step in the door!

A NEW CONCEPT IN ITALIAN FARE

Alice is referred to as an “Italian seafood and lobster bar,” which is a rather unique concept. If you love pasta dishes topped with numerous types of fish from lobster to calamari and back again (including a few odd mixes), this is the place for you. Most seafood served is caught locally and the produce comes from the nearby Union Square Greenmarket, making for ultimate farm-to-table and sea-to-table experiences. Alice has some of the most stunning seafood towers in town as well.

Alice is the brainchild of Chef And Culinary Director Riccardo Orfino of One More Hospitality (owners of the legendary Osteria 57) in collaboration with partners Emanuele Nigro and Wael Deek. The talented Orfino “made the rounds” at some of the finest Italian restaurants in both Italy and New York. He reveals, “I began my culinary journey in Italy, attending culinary school and honing my skills at esteemed establishments for 15 years. My most formative experience was at the two-Michelin-starred il luogo di Aimo e Nadia in Milan, where I learned the profound importance of sourcing exceptional ingredients and creating recipes that showcase their natural beauty. This philosophy is at the heart of Alice, where we strive to bring the finest ingredients to the table and let them shine.”

BEING CREATIVE WITH THE CLASSICS

Orfino is quick to point out that despite being known for its seafood, many landlubber choices have been added to the Alice menu in the past few months. He reveals, “We now offer a diverse menu that includes delectable meat dishes. While we craft most of our pasta in-house at our production center, Travelers Poets and Friends, we also incorporate high-quality imported pasta from Gragnano for signature dishes like Spaghettone al Pomodoro and Linguine Vongole. Our goal is to provide a truly authentic Italian dining experience, where classic recipes are elevated with innovative touches.”

BRING ON THE BURATTA

Alice has plenty of unique appetizer choices and when our foodie team went there, we could hardly make up our minds about what to order. Everything from Blue Fin Tuna uniquely prepared with plums to Scallops with pickled cauliflower, chanterelles and tomatoes are available. We shared the Burrata which is as fresh as it gets; this mound of dairy deliciousness, topped with arugula and breadcrumbs and sitting in a smooth cold herb sauce.

As you might expect, the pasta choices here are otherworldly. There are Southern Italian classics like the aforementioned Linguine Vongole and Spaghettone Pomodoro but for something a little different, diners can choose Butternut Squash Gnocchi made with brown butter, sage and smoked ricotta or the Lobster And Mushroom Risotto featuring Maine Lobster and local mushrooms. The Brasato Tortellini is right up our alley and we devoured it in a minute—these tender homemade pasta squares are stuffed with braised short rib shreds and then topped with 36-month-old Parmigiano. The Agnolotti Cacio E Pepe may be a super simple dish, but Alice’s version is extra peppery and features lots of artisanal Romano. The Bucatini Limone has a fresh lemon sauce, colatura and caper leaves, and you can get it topped with caviar.

We dug into amazingly fresh fish dishes as our entrees including Branzino Al Sale, which is created for two; the salt crusted and baked branzino is served with seasonal vegetables. The Halibut is a crowd favorite, is pan seared, then sided with celery root puree, cabbage and pickled shitake mushrooms. We ordered the Polenta Cacio E Pepe as a side and it was simply prepared with Pecorino Romano and fresh black pepper.

If you’re not into seafood, there are amazing meat choices, the two most prominent being the Lamb Shank braised in Barolo wine sauce and served with collard greens and polenta. The Ribeye Steak is a generous 12 ounces and comes from Upstate New York; sided with sauteed broccoli rabe and potatoes.

A CHIC CROWD

What kind of clientele does Alice have? We noticed quite a well-dressed young urban professional crowd on our visit. Orfino reveals, “Our clientele consists mainly of discerning locals who appreciate the quality of our ingredients and our dedication to honoring them through simple yet refined preparations. Some of our most popular dishes include the Spaghettone al Pomodoro, Agnolotti Cacio e Pepe, our locally sourced seafood and new meat options like Brasato Tortellini, a handmade ravioli with braised short ribs filling, local cream, 36-month Parmigiano.”

He continues on to opine that the key to Alice’s success has been the result of “taking great pride in our house-made creations…our dishes are drawing diners in for their simplicity and exquisite flavors.”

A PROMISING FUTURE

What’s next for this cutting-edge eatery? Orfino states with a smile, “We’re thrilled to be launching a new brunch service in the first quarter of 2025! We envision a lively and festive atmosphere with great music, making it the perfect weekend destination in the West Village. We’re also excited to introduce this as an added experience and menu to our seasonal specials planned for the first quarter.”

Be sure to check out the artisanal cocktails that Alice is also known for. Local herbs and berries are abundantly used in their signature drinks, some favorites being Perfect Darkness made with thyme infused gin, lemon, agave and crème de cassis and Rising Star, made with Desolas mezcal, agave, arak, cinnamon and star anise. Don’t be surprised if you look over at the bar and see one of the mixologists lighting up a homemade berry syrup in the bottom of a glass and then adding some fire when completing the drink as well!

LAUT NYC

A MICHELIN-STARRED JOURNEY THROUGH SOUTHEAST

ASIA

his hidden gem offers a culinary journey across Southeast Asia, blending traditional flavors from Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore with a contemporary touch. The restaurant’s atmosphere captures the essence of Southeast Asian dining with an elegant yet casual setting. Its warm lighting, eclectic decor, and thoughtfully arranged tables create a welcoming vibe perfect for intimate dinners and lively gatherings with friends.

Walking into Laut feels like stepping into a modern Southeast Asian street market, with cozy nooks and intricate decor that add to its charm. The restaurant balances upscale and laid-back, making it approachable for newcomers yet refined enough to please seasoned food lovers. The seating arrangements are versatile, with comfortable booths for smaller parties and larger tables for groups, adding to the communal dining experience that is integral to Southeast Asian culture.

Servers are well-versed in the intricacies of the diverse menu and are always ready to recommend a dish or suggest drink pairings. They’re attentive without being overbearing, a balance that enhances the dining experience. The servers frequently check in to ensure that every course meets expectations and are happy to provide detailed descriptions of ingredients and cooking methods, which adds an educational element to the meal.

THE MAIN EVENT

Of course, deliciously prepared food is the main attraction—a carefully curated selection of Southeast Asian favorites with a modern twist. A must-try appetizer is the Roti Canai, a Malaysian flatbread served with a rich curry dipping sauce. The roti is perfectly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, making it a comforting start to the meal. Laut also serves a stellar Satay selection, with options ranging from tender chicken to flavorful lamb skewers, each marinated in a blend of spices that delivers a punch of umami with every bite.

One of the standout dishes is the Laksa, a spicy noodle soup known for its complex, layered flavors. Laut’s version of this Malaysian and Singaporean classic features a harmonious blend of coconut milk, lemongrass, and chili paste, complemented by shrimp and tofu. The broth is rich and aromatic, striking the right balance of spice and creaminess. Another popular choice is the Nasi Lemak, Malaysia’s national dish of coconut rice served with spicy sambal, fried chicken, boiled egg, and crunchy peanuts. This dish embodies Southeast Asian comfort food with textures and flavors that transport you to the region.

Laut’s Pad Thai is a tribute to Thai street food culture, but it’s elevated with high-quality ingredients and a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and savory notes. The noodles are stirfried to the right consistency and generously topped with shrimp or tofu, peanuts, and a sprinkle of scallions. For spice fans, the Chili Pan Mee, a Malaysian dry noodle dish, delivers a fiery kick. It’s topped with minced pork, fried anchovies, and a soft-boiled egg that adds a luxurious texture when mixed with the noodles and chili sauce.

Laut NYC caters well to vegetarians and vegans with various dishes that maintain the integrity of traditional flavors. The Vegetable Curry Laksa offers the same aromatic experience as the seafood version, while the Sambal Tofu provides a satisfying alternative to the more meat-centric dishes. The Gado Gado Salad, an Indonesian specialty, features blanched vegetables, tofu, and tempeh topped with a luscious peanut sauce.

SWEET SENSATIONS & MORE

No meal here is complete without sampling the dessert menu. The Mango Sticky Rice is a classic Thai dessert that doesn’t disappoint, with ripe mango slices served alongside a bed of sweet sticky rice drizzled with coconut milk. Another option is the Pandan Chiffon Cake, which has a subtle pandan flavor and a light, airy texture. For those wanting a refreshing end to their meal, the Coconut Sorbet is both light and satisfying.

Laut offers an impressive drink menu with Southeast Asian-inspired cocktails, craft beers, and a carefully selected wine list. The Mango Mojito is a popular choice, with fresh mango and mint providing a tropical twist to the classic cocktail. For a more robust flavor, the Thai Basil Smash combines gin, Thai basil, and lime for a refreshing yet sophisticated drink.

Laut NYC successfully blends authentic Southeast Asian flavors with a modern dining experience, making it a top destination for those seeking bold, complex flavors in a welcoming setting. From the Roti to the Laksa, each dish is prepared with care, and the flavors stay true to their origins while adapting to the expectations of a contemporary, diverse audience. Whether you’re a fan of spicy curries, aromatic noodle dishes, or refreshing cocktails, Laut NYC promises an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of Southeast Asia.

GREAT BITES

THE PERFECT ROMANTIC DINNER…AT HOME

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year. It is a day when creative juices can flow without restriction, except for the obvious dietary restrictions that may be present with your guest. In my case, I love putting together a beautiful, delicious and robust romantic dinner at home for my wife. And you could not find two more polar opposite folks on the food spectrum than Kylie and I. So this year, I decided for this column that I would write what I am doing for the celebration of that fat little cherub known as Cupid.

My wife is a vegetarian while I am the carnivore from hell. So deciding on a menu is never a simple task. Granted, Kylie is not a strict vegetarian, nor is she vegan. As she likes to put it, “I don’t eat anything with a Mother.” So, I have to be a little creative with menu planning and selection on the daily when I cook for both of us. But I wanted this year’s menu for our epicurean dalliance on love’s biggest night to be special.

This year’s menu features a beautiful spring salad with homemade raspberry balsamic dressing, a small appetizer of caprese, homemade spaghetti and meatless meatballs for Kylie with an aged Tuscan steak for me flanked by my infamous creamy mashed potatoes and sauteed carrots and cauliflower in a reduced fig glaze. Dessert is centered on an oldie, but goodie, from one of my greatest culinary inspirations, and the man who is largely considered the “Godfather of American Cuisine,” Chef Larry Forgione; his Old-Fashioned Double Chocolate Pudding.

RASPBERRY BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE

Ingredients

• 1 cup frozen raspberries (though fresh berries are preferred)

• ⅓ cup olive oil extra virgin

• 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar divided

• 1 tablespoon honey

• ½ tablespoon brown sugar

• ¼ teaspoon salt or to taste

• ⅛ teaspoon black pepper

Preparation

Add fresh raspberries and 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar to and mix well with a blender (if using frozen raspberries, microwave on high for a couple of minutes to thaw and put in blender). Set aside for 10 minutes.

Personally, I feel that the seeds and pulp from raspberries can add a nice texture to a dressing, so if you want the core of the dressing to be more in the form of a puree, you need to use a metal sieve to strain them with.

Add raspberry mix (or puree if you use the sieve) and all other ingredients to a small blender or food processor. Blend ingredients at medium speed until well incorporated.

Taste the dressing and adjust with a little more honey or pepper if needed.

CHEF LARRY FORGIONE’S OLD-FASHIONED DOUBLE

CHOCOLATE PUDDING

Ingredients

• 2 ¼ cups milk

• ½ cup sugar

• 1 large egg

• 2 large egg yolks

• 3 tablespoons cornstarch

• 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted

• ¼ teaspoon salt

• 3 ½ ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

• 1 ½ teaspoons dark rum

• 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Preparation

Combine 2 cups of the milk and ¼ cup of the sugar in a large saucepan and heat over medium-high heat until scalded. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Place the egg and egg yolks in a medium bowl and whisk until blended. Add the remaining ¼ cup milk, ¼ cup sugar, cornstarch, cocoa, and salt, and whisk until well blended. Whisk the cocoa mixture into the scalded milk.

Set over low heat and cook, stirring with a wooden spoon, for 4 to 6 minutes, until the mixture thickens and comes to a low boil, causing large bubbles to form. Immediately remove from the heat, add the chopped chocolate, butter, rum, and vanilla, and stir until the butter and chocolate are completely melted (the pudding will continue to thicken as it cools). Pour the pudding into two large red wine glasses and let cool for about 10 minutes.

Pour the remaining pudding into a container to enjoy later. Once cooled, top with a dollup of fresh whipped cream.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

A homemade meal may not be your jam. And that’s okay. However, I have found in those situations, a little culinary romance and appropriate stage setting will help set the mood for your post-dinner evening. As an example, if you really want to blow someone away, give my friends at M. Cacao (mcacao.com) a spin.

Their handcrafted chocolate, and presentation, is some of the very best I have ever seen, let alone enjoyed. The mad genius chocolatiers at M. Cacao are just that – genius!

They use the best quality ingredients and their creative approach to their craft is the stuff epicurean legend is made of. As to setting the stage, check out these Heart Plates from Mikasa (mikasa.com) which has M. Cacao’s Hearts & Roses collection on them in the photo.

I also highly suggest grabbing a rose and removing the petals, spreading them around the plate for a more romantic look and feel. Of course handing your beloved a single, long-stem red rose (no plastic wrapping or tube) right before presenting this dish can also get you a lot further in the aforementioned postdinner evening.

Happy Valentine’s Day and Bon Appetit!

ON THE BIG SCREEN

EXCITING FANTASY ACTION

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD

Not yet rated

There’s a new Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and he’s starring in this, the 35th Marvel movie. Steve Rogers is no more, now Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) takes up the shield and finds himself in the midst of an explosive international incident that (surprise!) threatens the world’s stability. With Harrison Ford as the U.S. President and Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Giancarlo Esposito along for the actionpacked flick, this one brings a very different look and feel to the Captain America superhero mythos.

BRIDGET JONES: MAD ABOUT THE BOY

THE LEGEND OF OCHI PG

This fanciful adventure story is designed for all ages, centering around Yuri, a young girl who rescues a lost baby of a strange species. This “ochi” baby (who looks a bit like Yoda) opens a whole new and very exciting world to farm girl Yuri (played by Helena Zengel) as the “legend” develops. With able support from talented puppeteers as well as Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, and Finn Wolfhard, this film hopes to capture the imaginations of a new generation of fantasy lovers.

TIME TO LAUGH

Not yet rated Renee Zellweger returns to her beloved role of Bridget Jones in this fourth installment of the slightly zany British bon vivant’s always-rocky romantic life. It’s been about 25 years since we first met her, and almost 10 since she last hit the silver screen, so a lot has changed. She’s a widow with two children, tiptoeing into dating again with a much-younger man (Leo Woodall); and Bridget being Bridget, all kinds of funny complications soon arise. Plus, Hugh Grant is back.

THE DAY THE EARTH BLEW UP: A LOONEY TUNES MOVIE PG

The Looney Tunes gang is coming to the big screen, led by Daffy Duck and Porky Pig, in a wacky tale of aliens on earth with an evil plan to control the minds of humans (and of ducks and pigs, too). Done in traditional 2-D animation, this comical cavalcade of old favorites has lots of new gags and features the voices of Peter MacNicol, Laraine Newman, Wayne Knight, with Eric Bauza as Daffy and Candi Milo as Porky, all designed to make kids and adults crack up.

He’s an old guy, but not quite so old he can’t keep being a hit man! That’s the premise of this Christoph Waltz comic action flick, which proves that a two-time Oscar-winning man who’s 68 years old can keep right on working in Hollywood. He’s supposed to be headed into retirement but gets pulled back in to take on a new (and much younger) assassin. When things don’t go quite right, laughing at murder is in order in this movie that costars Cooper Hoffman and Lucy Liu.

A THOUSAND BLOWS

Hulu

From the creator of Peaky Blinders comes another very English series, this one set in London’s bare-fisted brawling parlors circa 1880. Based on real people (as was Peaky Blinders), this bloody tale centers on two Black Jamaican fighters who emigrate to the Big Smoke and get embroiled in the criminal gangs of the tough-as-nails East End. Malachi Kelly, Erin Doherty, Stephen Graham, and Francis Lovehall star.

ZERO DAY

Netflix

THE HUNTING PARTY

NBC

Based on the premise that the USA has a top-secret prison filled with stone-cold killers, this new network series focuses on the detectives pulled together to track them down. For they have pulled an audacious escape and are on the loose, which doesn’t bode well for the general populace. Created by relative newcomer JJ Bailey and starring Melissa Roxburgh and Nick Wechsler as the lead investigators out to bring these bad guys to justice, the show is one of the few truly new series launches in network TV that’s come out lately.

It’s the day that 81-year-old Robert De Niro becomes a TV-series star, as this political thriller hits Netflix and marks the acclaimed actor’s first time as a lead actor in a show. It’s great to know that there’s no reason to retire when people still want you to work, as De Niro proves every day, this time in a story that rips ideas from the headlines that are chillingly close to what could be our reality. A stellar cast backs up the master, including Angela Bassett, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, Joan Allen, and Lizzy Caplan.

THE WHITE LOTUS

HBO/MAX

SUITS LA

NBC

When Suits first aired on USA Network from 2011 to 2019, it was a successful show that starred a future princess of the British royal family (Meagan Markle) along with Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams. But then Netflix got hold of it and sent it to the stratosphere in viewing popularity. So now the show is back, set in Los Angeles and starring a new group of attorneys led by Ted Black (Stephen Amell), in the show created by Aaron Korsh, the mind behind the original series. And Gabriel Macht returns as well. But don’t expect to see Meghan Markle suited up again any time soon!

We may have lost Jennifer Coolidge (sob!) in Season 2, but The White Lotus returns after a three-year break with Mike White still at the helm. This time the twisted tale takes place during an eventful week at a Thailand resort, with an all-star cast of characters. Watch for Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Michelle Monaghan, and Parker Posey to lead the female contingent, and Walton Goggins, Jason Isaacs, and Patrick Schwarzenegger as the men who help set the wheels in motion. After winning 15 Emmys in the first two, this season should be deliciously hot – and deadly.

ON HER TERMS

For fans of Casey McQuiston, Alexis Hall, and Meryl Wilsner, a hilarious, sweetly sexy, gloriously relatable sapphic rom-com about a fake relationship, very real emotions, and writing your own Hollywood love story—from the acclaimed author of For Her Consideration.

Fresh off breaking up with her boyfriend and swerving away from the conventional, TikTok-ready married life she never wanted, Clementine is ready to explore the alternatives. Not that she wants to be single forever, much less die alone. But at thirty-six, it’s time for her to experience new things, including in her love life. And though an invitation to a fake relationship to appease family sounds like a recipe for disaster, Clem finds herself saying yes to brilliant, spirited dog groomer Chloe Lee anyway.

Chloe is long past her own baby gay era, but even before they’ve tackled Clem’s parents’ anniversary party and Chloe’s friend’s wedding, the two of them end up spending  a lot of time together. As the attraction between them grows stronger, it all begins to feel pretty accurate to Clem. Chloe, however, is fine as just friends—plus she’s convinced Clem is just eager for “someone” to take her off the singles list. How to persuade her otherwise? After all, Clem is starting to realize her life is wonderfully complete, and being “alone” doesn’t scare her a bit. Still, being without the tiny powerhouse that is Chloe, specifically? That’s a whole other story . . .

CRUSH: A NOVEL

ISOLA: A NOVEL

A young woman and her lover are marooned on an island in this breathtaking saga, an epic story of love, faith, and defiance from the bestselling author of Sam.

Heir to a fortune, Marguerite is destined for a life of prosperity and gentility. Then she is orphaned, and her guardian—an enigmatic and volatile man—spends her inheritance and insists she accompany him on an expedition to New France. Isolated and afraid, Marguerite befriends her guardian’s servant and develops an intense attraction. But when their relationship is discovered, they are brutally punished and abandoned on a small island with no hope for rescue.

Once a child of privilege who is dressed in gowns and laced pearls in her hair, Marguerite finds herself at the mercy of nature. As the weather turns, blanketing the island in ice, she discovers a faith she never needed.

Inspired by the real life of a sixteenth-century heroine, Isola is the timeless story of a woman fighting for survival.

When a husband asks his wife to consider what might be missing from their marriage, what follows surprises them both—sex, heartbreak and heart rekindling, and a rediscovered sense of all that is possible.

She’s happy, settled, productive, and content in her entire life—a child, a career, an admirable marriage, deep friendships, happy parents, and a spouse she still loves. But when her husband urges her to address what the narrow labels of “husband” and “wife” force them to edit out of their lives, hell breaks loose.

Using the author’s personal experiences as a jumping-off point,  Crush  is about the danger and liberation of chasing desire, the havoc it can wreak, and most of all, the unmistakable sense of self one finds when the storm passes. Destined to become a classic novel about marriage and tackling the big questions being asked about partnership in post-pandemic relationships,  Crush is a sharp, funny, seductive, and revelatory novel about holding on to everything it’s possible to love—friends, children, parents, passion, lovers, husbands, all of the world’s good books, and most of all one’s deep sense of purpose.

FROM DOG WALKERS TO TRAINERS

HOW PET BUSINESS INTERNATIONAL IS TAILORING INSURANCE TO THE GROWING PET SERVICE SECTOR

Intrepid entrepreneurs are a special breed of human. Smart, resourceful and determined to make their business work, and matter. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many also learned the value of the pet business sector with more than 10,000 new pet services businesses opening in the last two years (up from approximately 2,000 the prior year) in New York alone. And as entrepreneurs know all too well, any service business comes with its pitfalls, most notably the liabilities. That begs the question, is your pet business covered properly by the right insurance, let alone the right insurance provider?

Setting that aside for a moment, let’s talk about the end-user and their concerns. For a pet service business to be successful, you need three things: a client database, appropriately targeted marketing and the right business acumen to make that business work. Key to this is understanding that pet parents are very particular about who cares for their furrever ones. Pet parents want reassurance that their pets are in good hands but if something were to go wrong, they would receive proper care. One of the first questions most pet parents ask is, “What kind of insurance does your business have and who provides it?” I’ve asked this question myself many times over the last 20 years.

Like any business insurance, though, not all companies and policies are created equally. So when I hear from a pet service provider that they use Pet Business International to insure that the pets in their charge are safe when the unexpected hits, I get excited. Why? Because I have personally seen the negative effects of a poorly planned insurance policy. Many years ago, I had a dog walker whose insurance was woefully insufficient and was provided by a mainstream insurance carrier whose strength was in home insurance, with little experience in the pet sector.

That led to unexpected and significant veterinary bills I had to pay for because of the negligence of the walker. Needless to say, we hired a new walker with comprehensive insurance!

Pet Business International, which launched in 12 U.S. states including Connecticut and New Jersey in August 2024, specializes in instant online insurance quotes for small and medium sized businesses that provide pet grooming, animal training, pet sitting, dog walking, boarding and other closely-related pet and animal services. So when I hear that a business uses Pet Business International’s insurance offerings, I am much more apt to support that business. The company works tirelessly to provide highquality, low-premium plans to businesses in the pet and animal sector insurance to suit their specific needs. After all, they have provided pet business insurance for over 20 years.

With competitive pricing, a diverse offering of products suited to different service businesses within the pet space, Pet Business International has something for everyone. For example, the insurance needed for a groomer and a doggy day care has marked differences. The same goes for dog trainers and dog walkers.

Pet Business International has specialty products for each of these verticals that focuses on the unique attributes to cover not only the business but, and more importantly, the dog itself. Pet Business International’s standard offering includes general liability, accidents & injuries to animals, loss of keys, travel costs, member to member coverage for trainers, loss of animal in the event that any pet you are looking after is lost or stolen. Businesses can add on professional liability, equipment coverage and animal illness (for boarding only). And with their money-back guarantee, Pet Business International is literally putting their money where their paws are –at the care of your business and the furrever ones in your charge!

The most commonly used pet service business in the New York tri-state area is dog walking. Having dog walkers’ insurance doesn’t just protect the walker; it demonstrates the service’s commitment to safety and preparation for the unexpected. That sends the right message to clients, who will want to be sure that their pet is safe in the dog walker’s hands. Their plans cover the business against third-party claims for injury or damage caused by a dog in their charge. The walker is also covered for any accidents or injuries that may befall the clients’ pets.

Pet Business International’s insurance plans can also help with the costs involved in the event a dog is lost or stolen, and provides coverage for other important liabilities, such as losing a client’s keys if you collect and return dogs from their homes.

For dog trainers, Pet Business International’s expertise delineates between the needs of trainers versus dog walkers or groomers. As an example, dog training insurance is vital when dealing with potentially poor behaving and aggressive dogs. The business is responsible for the safety of the animals and for their actions whilst the dogs are under their watch. And that includes the dog trainer’s advice and opinion as part of the business. Dog training insurance includes services in a group, class or even on a one to one basis – training can include a range of disciplines including obedience, behavior, and agility. As the company states, “As a pet trainer you need to be sure you have insurance covering the right areas of your work – not only for your peace of mind, but also for your clients.”

This is a company that our sister publication, Pet Lifestyles Magazine, trusts and has worked with. The Pet Business International team has years of insurance experience and has consistent reinforcement training to keep improving their understanding of the industry. As a business owner, you owe it to not only your business, but your customers, to make sure that you have the best insurance product possible. And when it comes to pet business insurance, Pet Business International has the expertise, the offerings and the knowhow to help keep your business and your customers safe, happy and wagging those beautiful tails!

As a pet parent, the next time you are hiring a dog walker, going to a grooming salon or trying to find the right dog trainer, you need to ask about their insurance policy and what it entails to ensure that your furrever one is safe. ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER

ANNALEE SCHLOSSBERG: TAKING OVER MANHATTAN ONE FRY AT A TIME WITH BEL-FRIES

Meet Annalee Schlossberg, the 25-year-old entrepreneur behind Bel-Fries, a New Yorkbased Belgian fries establishment, bringing the famous taste and texture of Belgian fries paired with local artisanal sauces to the streets of New York City.

Throughout her college experience at Cornell University, Annalee always had a strong interest in entrepreneurship–specifically with a focus on hospitality. Pursuing multiple internships in the field, including both customer-facing and more back-end marketing operations, Annalee built up a solid foundation of knowledge, along with the confidence to open up her own business.

Annalee decided she wanted to take the popular European fry-shop concept, and bring the experience to New York. She took inspiration from the original creation place of fries, Belgium, and named the business ‘BelFries’, to educate the world on the true origins of the french fry.

Bel-Fries utilizes the classic European Belgian fry techniques–thicker cut and twice-fried potatoes served in a cone–paired with their own freshly-made artisanal sauces. Annalee’s American entrepreneurial spirit brings a twist to the typical NYC street food scene and sets a new standard for fries.

GROWTH ON THE HORIZON

Their flagship location opened in 2020 and has since expanded at an exponential rate across New York City including into the Bryant Park Winter Village this past holiday season–with more plans for expansions in the new year.

New York Lifestyles met with Annalee at the Bel-Fries booth in Bryant Park’s iconic Winter Village for an inspiring conversation about the young entrepreneur’s journey, the inspiration behind the brand, and what makes her business stand out amongst the competitive culinary landscape in NY

NYLM: Belgian fries are iconic. How does it feel to bring your version of that to here in New York City, let alone the iconic Winter Village?

Annalee: “It’s honestly been incredible bringing Bel-Fries to Bryant Park. It’s insanely busy here. We have locals, tourists, everyone’s walking by, it feels like almost the busiest spot in the whole city and we’re right in the center here on the ice-skating rink, so we couldn’t be happier.”

NYLM: How many locations does Bel Fries have?

Annalee: “We have about six locations right now. A lot of them are pop-up seasonal locations. We have either a food truck or flagship in the lower east side of Manhattan. We’re opening our mall location in a couple of weeks from now, we also had a presence at the Columbus Circle Holiday Market. There’s a lot going on and a lot of locations in the mix.”

NYLM: How did you find your unique twist on Belgian fries for your customers?

Annalee: “We found that serving the fries in the cone with the sauce on the side, gives people that Belgian feel because in Belgium, they always serve it in a cone, they don’t serve it on a plate, how it’s done usually in America. We also have 16 artisanal sauces at our flagship location and, of course, our fries are twice fried. We make all of those in-house every single day. The fries are extremely crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. So that pairing of the piping hot fries with our artisanal sauces on the side, makes it great.”

NYLM: How did you come up with the idea for the business model?

Annalee: “Fries are really popular all over Europe – in Belgium, Amsterdam, etc. They have shops devoted entirely to fries and we said it’s such a great concept, it’s so popular – why aren’t there more fry shops in America or in New York? And so that’s how we decided to open up here, just serving mainly fries and sauces. Our name Bel-Fries comes from Belgian fries, because fries actually originated in Belgium and not France. So we’re renaming French fries to Bel-Fries.”

NYLM: What were you doing before Bel-Fries? How did you get to this part of your life?

Annalee: “I was in college before I started the company, and throughout college, I always had a really strong interest in hospitality and entrepreneurship. I did internships in front of house operations, doing events, parties, party planning, bartending, serving at a pool club, etc. And then I also did back of house stuff kind of more of the marketing side of things – social media, getting the hang of really those two things together gave me leverage to open up Bel-Fries and kind of know what I was doing.”

NYLM: It’s been four years since you first started. What is one of the biggest takeaways you’ve learned at this point?

Annalee: “I would say definitely my biggest takeaway is finding the right team, hiring the right people, trustworthy people, loyal people. People that just really believe in your company and believe in you, has by far been the most important thing in the last four years. Because I wouldn’t be able to grow the company without my whole team, and Bel-Fries wouldn’t be here without everyone who’s involved in the company.”

NYLM: What can we expect to see from Bel-Fries in 2025?

Annalee: “We have a lot coming in the upcoming year. More food trucks, we’re opening our mall location soon which will be huge year-round, and we’re looking to hopefully open more mall locations in the future.”

MY NEW YORK STORY

GNOCCHI ON 9TH: ITALIAN FOOD ON-THE-GO HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

Meet Mike Salzano and Ariel Strizower, the creative duo behind the thriving new restaurant, Gnocchi on 9th. From friends to business partners, the pair are using their delicious flavors, convenient packaging, and the power of social media to bring a twist on fast-casual dining to New York City.

Initially real-estate partners, Mike and Ariel were looking for a creative concept that would work in train advertisements as their next venture. Once the idea of pasta was brought into the mix, the pieces started to fall into place. Their version of on-the-go Italian food, a perfect blend of freshly crafted gnocchi with the iconic and convenient Chinese takeout boxes, would bring a different experience to NYC Italian dining.

The pair wanted to bring a creation to the table that would allow hungry city dwellers to fix their Italian food cravings for a good price, without having to commit to a sitdown dinner.

WHERE

IT ALL STARTED

Gnocchi on 9th opened their first location this past April on 9th Street in the East Village, inspiring the name of the business. Within their first week, the business had already become a viral sensation for their innovative concept, which helped to accelerate business growth and draw in new customers.

Since opening its doors in spring 2024, Gnocchi on 9th has impressively expanded their business to three brick-and-mortar locations and three popup events, which included the iconic Bryant Park Winter Village this past holiday season.

New York Lifestyles connected with Mike and Ariel at their Gnocchi on 9th pop-up at the 2024 Bryant Park Winter Village to discuss the business’ rapid success since opening less than a year ago, the creative process behind the product, and the story on how the two came together to establish their business in the ever-growing NYC food scene.

NYLM: Bryant Park Winter Village is such a classic staple in New York. How did it feel to bring your business there?

Gon9: “It’s a lot of work.” Ariel shared. “It feels like a battle with the amount of work that we’re doing. I mean, it’s really cool to be part of something so iconic as the Bryant Park Winter Village. We were very fortunate to have the traction we did to be able to get the booth in the park, because we know that it’s not the easiest to get in here. The customers have been really happy to have us here and we’ve had a good turnout so far. So, we’re happy to be here.”

NYLM: The business started in April 2024 and has grown exponentially, which is a huge goal for entrepreneurs to grow at that rapid rate. How did you go from one to, all of a sudden, six locations in the works?

Gon9: “It definitely involved a lot of hiring, and a lot of upkeep with suppliers and everything else that goes into running a business,” Mike shared. Ariel added, “I think it was the response from the locals, really from everybody. The business has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram and everybody is coming to see what we are doing, which allowed us to have the opportunity to open more locations and to expand so quickly. The intention was definitely not to do that, but when we had the response that we did, there really wasn’t any other choice but to spread the gnocchi around the city.”

NYLM: Were you expecting to get that response on social media?

Gon9: “It happened a week after we opened, and we didn’t plan for it,” Mike shared. “A customer who became a regular came in one day and told us she was going to make a TikTok of us and use a voiceover, so I didn’t even have to speak in the video. The day after she posted, we had a line of people and kept selling out. Apparently New Yorkers like their carbs and their pasta!”

NYLM: You’re friends, but there was a business relationship there, as well. How did this partnership happen?

Gon9: Ariel explained, “It was a happy accident.” Mike added, “A very happy accident.” Mike shared, “I’ve been a waiter and a bartender here and there. Ariel was my client in real estate and we were looking at a space on the train. We started talking about pasta and were trying to figure out what would work. We chose gnocchi because it was the easiest thing to eat with a fork.” Ariel added, “Spaghetti doesn’t really offer that ease of eating.”

NYLM: Love the Chinese takeout boxes, and then the ease of being able to walk around and eat your delicious gnocchi. Was that the plan from day one?

Gon9: Ariel explained, “The container kind of just happened. The idea was always gnocchi and then the container–it’s a classic, iconic New York container. We all grew up eating fried rice and Lo Mein out of it, so why not put something as fun and delicious, but different in that same container?” Mike added, “It is the portability of the container that helps us.”

NYLM: Is there something you’re looking forward to in 2025?

Gon9: As Mike shared, “A few more locations and then maybe a vacation.” Ariel continued, “Hopefully a day off. That would be what I’m looking forward to in 2025. We have a long six weeks getting our other pop-ups open and keeping up with the demand in Bryant Park, in Union Square, and in the stores. We’re going to make it happen, people need to eat.”

NYLM: How do you guys manage all the locations altogether?

Gon9: “It’s a group effort and a team effort,” explained Mike. “Our employees help us manage what’s happening in the stores, as well as Ariel and I making sure to touch-base at each restaurant and do what we have to, to help run the business.” Ariel added, “We have a really good team of people with us. So, everyone working with us is as big of a reason for this happening as anything else.”

TIME OUT WITH…

CHEF MANJIT MANOHAR THE REGENCY BAR & GRILL AT LOEWS REGENCY NEW YORK

On the picturesque corner of the Upper East Side lives one of Manhattan’s most iconic hotels, and, of course, restaurants – The Regency Bar & Grill at Loews Regency New York Hotel. Renowned for its “Power Breakfast,” which started in the 1970s by Bob Tisch, as well as its lively bar scene, where you can’t get a seat once the clock strikes 5:00 p.m., The Regency Bar & Grill is filled with a warm staff, some of whom have worked at the restaurant and bar for decades, serving its classic martinis, fine wines and signature dishes that keep guests coming back for more. Behind the glass doors, executive chef Manjit Manohar is now in his third year at the helm of this restaurant.

We wrote about Chef Manjit when he was first brought in to shake things up at the legendary hotel’s restaurant, but now he is reflecting on where this journey has taken him, and his outlook on where he wants to take The Regency Bar & Grill next.

Manohar grew up in a small town in India. Every morning, his parents would go to the local farmer’s market to pick up local produce and milk to use for meals that day. His mother has been his life-long inspiration; after all she was the one who encouraged him to become a chef. It was that encouragement and his drive for better, healthier and flavorful fare that continues to spark the flame for Chef Monjit in the kitchen.

For nearly 25 years, he has traveled the world, learning about new cultures and mastering new cuisines; he worked behind the burners in some of the most renowned and prestigious kitchens in the world. But joining the team at The Regency Bar & Grill has been a career highlight. At a previous role, he worked close to The Regency Bar & Grill. He always admired how all the tables were filled every morning with businessmen and women, dressed for success with custom tailoring and now, years later, here he is running the kitchen at 540 Park Avenue.

So, what has Chef Manjit done in the last three years and what’s coming up for the iconic restaurant that New York’s movers and shakers are so loyal to? He has expanded the menu tremendously for lunch, dinner, and bar service along with weekend brunch; and created monthly dining series events, which he plans to bring back later this year. Chef Manjit has continued to surprise and delight guests, both established and new, with his creative flare that honors the sophistication and prominence of The Regency Bar & Grill’s history blended with a contemporary touch, time and time again. He has also sourced new culinary partners as part of the brand’s Flavor by Loews Hotels program.

Later this month, Chef Manjit is proud to debut his second Valentine’s Day menu. An offering full of mouth-watering dishes catered to the community. For $125, per person, the menu consists of a first course, or “First Kiss,” with selections including Hamachi Crudo or Caviar and Crisp Shell. The main course, or “Made For Each Other” selections include a Fillet of Beet, Halibut, or Sweet Potato Gnocchi. Guests can end the evening on a sweet note with the “Sweat Treat” course of Duo of Chocolates or Chocolate Chip Cookie Slider. In addition to the special menu, new this year, a live jazz trio will be performing from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. that evening.

Beyond the dinner, those looking for more ways to say, “I Love You,” the hotel has debuted its new Love at Loews package experience including curated seasonal flowers, a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, selection of local chocolates and a one-on-one consultation with our concierge to impress your loved one.

So, the next time you walk Park Avenue and are looking for that experience that you thought you might not be able to get anymore, step inside The Regency Bar & Grill, we promise it will be worth it.

THE FINAL WORD

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year. Albeit driven by Hallmark, it is the only day solely dedicated to love and all of its amazements. It also happens to be the only day of the year that the majority of folks agree on one very specific thing; love conquers all.

Since the dawn of our species, humans have always sought out a life partner. Whether you believe in human evolution or creationism, the fact is that humanity was never meant to walk this Earth alone. As a matter of fact, millennia of behavior and research shows that humans cannot exist on their own, no matter how strong or resolute that human might be. That is one of the many reasons the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns had such a detrimental effect on the mental health and wellbeing of our population.

LOVE IT OR HATE IT

Back to that fat little cherub’s day. Depending on where you are in your life, you either love or hate Valentine’s Day. Chances are if you are in a long-term committed relationship, you love it. And the same chances exist that those who recently had their relationship end, or have been single for a while, hate Valentine’s Day. Personally, I love Valentine’s Day for so many reasons, the most important being that I get to spoil my beautiful wife Kylie (who am I kidding…I love to spoil her on any day of the year), usually ending the day with a nice, romantic dinner just for the two of us.

But, in recent years, there have been certain groups of people who have stood out against Cupid’s special day. Yes, there are people who are so against the notion of love that they have focused on creating two days that flank Valentine’s Day; Galentine’s Day on February 13th and Guylentine’s Day on February 15th. Both are designed to celebrate friendships rather than romance.

As an example, on February 13th, Galentine’s Day, is all about women’s friendships. Guylentine’s Day, on February 15th, is about male friendships. In my humble opinion, both days are absurd and desperate attempts for most to hide the fact that they are lonely or unable to find a romantic partner. However, there are those that genuinely don’t believe in monogamy or love and those days are actually perfect for them.

I know you will find this hard to believe, but I am at a loss of words for those that continue to shame such a beautiful day. My belief in love, and all of its facets, is a lifelong one. After all, my wife Kylie arrived in the US on June 22, 2002 and I asked her to marry me on June 25th. We’ve been happily married for 22 years. My parents had a similar story and they’ve been together for over 50 years.

So when I see people bucking the notion that love conquers all, I get a little defensive. And angry.

The endless love songs and ballads of my youth have of course helped further my belief in such an important emotion. The generations of movies, TV shows and books have proven that love, in fact, does conquer all.

And, yes, it is what I used to refer to as “Hollywood Magic” that has made so many believe as well (notice I said “used to” since Hollywood has lost all of its creativity and magic in recent years).

However, it is also important to note that Valentine’s Day is only one day. Two questions I have often asked myself around this time of year come to mind: Why do people wait to celebrate their love on one day? Why aren’t people celebrating that love every day? A phone call with one of our New York Lifestyles Magazine writers this morning reminded me of just how important these two questions are.

The truth is, as I indicated earlier, that I love celebrating my marriage to Kylie every day. Does it always work out that way? No. Do I still make the effort? Yes. And that is what is seemingly missing from today’s world.

THE FINAL WORD:

Celebrate your love every day, not just on some made up, commercial holiday. Celebrate the union, commitment or even just the emotion on the daily because tomorrow is never a guarantee. Today, however, is. To be a little cliché: Carpe Diem, my friends. Happy Valentine’s Day!
