ELENA FEINSTEIN
SHAPING THE FUTURE OF LUXURY BEAUTY
By Patricia Canole | Dasha Dare Photography
Elena Feinstein, the founder of Roseyard Aesthetics in New York City, is a notable figure in the world of luxury beauty and aesthetics. She brings a unique blend of European elegance and cutting-edge technology to Manhattan’s Upper East Side, a combination that intrigues and captivates. Her journey from Estonia to the heart of NYC’s beauty scene is marked by a deep passion for both fashion and the science of skincare, coupled with a strong academic foundation in luxury marketing and finance from the Fashion Institute of Technology and NYU Stern School of Business.
Elena’s foray into the aesthetic industry began with a profound interest in the intersection of science and art. During the isolation period brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, she deepened her knowledge of well-being, nutrition, and anti-aging, leading her to realize a significant gap in the U.S. market. Traditional options for age management either relied heavily on productbased facials with limited efficacy or invasive plastic surgery. Seeing the need for something more balanced, she launched Roseyard Aesthetics in early 2023, a clinic that bridges this gap by offering non-invasive yet highly effective treatments
A SANCTUARY OF SOPHISTICATION
Located on Park Avenue, Roseyard Aesthetics has quickly become a sanctuary for those seeking sophisticated beauty solutions. The clinic is known for its state-ofthe-art treatments, including the Sciton BBL laser and Moxi treatment, which Feinstein herself favors for their skin-tightening and rejuvenation effects. These treatments, along with others like BBL Bare hair removal and HydraFacial, form the core of the clinic’s offerings, ensuring that clients leave with a radiant and youthful appearance.
Roseyard Aesthetics distinguishes itself not just through its advanced technology but also through its commitment to a comprehensive approach to beauty. This includes IV therapy for internal wellness, body treatments like Endosphere therapy for cellulite reduction, and a range of injectables administered by European-trained professionals. A bonus is the clinic’s partnership with Codage, a luxury French skincare brand providing clients with exclusive and highly effective skincare solutions.
A BLOOMING FUTURE AT ROSEYARD
Elena’s leadership extends beyond her clinic. She has gained recognition in the broader luxury and beauty industry, serving as a member of prestigious events such as the Cannes Digital Fashion Awards. Her expertise in luxury beauty and innovation is well-regarded, and she is seen as a key influencer in setting new standards in the med spa industry. Elena’s ability to blend Euro-inspired elegance with the latest advancements in anti-aging technology has positioned Roseyard Aesthetics as a premier destination for those seeking timeless beauty
Elena’s dedication to excellence and her passion for enhancing natural beauty ensures that Roseyard Aesthetics will remain at the forefront of the aesthetic industry for years
We enjoyed meeting Elena Feinstein at her Roseyard Aesthetics on Park Ave. Here is what we learned.
How has your journey from Estonia to New York City influenced your approach to beauty and wellness?
My journey has been about mixing European elegance with the city’s love for innovation. Here, I’ve found the ultimate playground to combine my passion for fashion and skincare science. The pandemic nudged me to delve into wellness, sparking Roseyard Aesthetics’ birth—a haven of noninvasive, sophisticated treatments.
What were the biggest challenges you faced when launching Roseyard Aesthetics?
Launching Roseyard Aesthetics was like assembling a puzzle with missing pieces. The first big hurdle was making a name for us in Manhattan, where beauty spots outnumber coffee shops. Standing out in such a progressive market meant finding our unique voice and flair. Then, the challenge was investing in the right technology, like ensuring our treatments were cuttingedge and sleek. But with the best equipment and some European elegance, we’ve managed to carve our niche in this vibrant industry.
Share the story behind the name “Roseyard Aesthetics” and what it represents.
The name “Roseyard Aesthetics” blossomed from my love for timeless beauty and elegance. Roses have always symbolized beauty, grace, and passion—qualities I strive to embody in every service we offer. The ‘Yard’ signifies a growth space, a haven where we nurture your skin to its fullest potential.
When brainstorming names, I imagined a serene garden where one could indulge in self-care and rejuvenation. “Roseyard” represents a place and an experience—a commitment to enhancing natural beauty with a touch of sophistication and heart.
Roseyard Aesthetics is known for its blend of European elegance and innovative technology. How do you balance tradition with innovation in your treatments?
We take the timeless principles of European beauty— emphasizing natural radiance and well-being—and enhance them with state-of-the-art treatments. Our use of the Sciton BBL laser and Moxi treatment exemplifies this blend, offering clients rejuvenation and skin tightening with precision and care. Of course, let’s not forget our collaboration with CODAGE, a luxury French skincare brand that brings an exclusive touch to our offerings.
You’ve emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to beauty. How does this shape the services offered at Roseyard?
At Roseyard Aesthetics, we mix beauty with wellness like a perfect cocktail! We offer non-invasive tricks to keep you glowing, therapies to boost your inner vitality and treatments that make your skin feel smooth and toned. It’s all about radiating beauty from the inside out!
Please walk us through some popular treatments and explain why they have become a client favorite.
At our clinic, the Moxi treatment, developed in Palo Alto, is like the rockstar of skincare. It is celebrated for its outstanding results in managing melasma and giving the skin that enviable glow. It’s like a magic wand for all skin types, and when paired with the BBL laser, it’s like your skin’s dream team, delivering jaw-dropping rejuvenation.
On the other hand, Endosphere therapy has won hearts for its ability to enhance circulation and lymphatic drainage, resulting in firmer, smoother skin. Born in the stylish labs of Italy, this treatment is like a personal trainer for your body, making it a favorite for those seeking visible results without the stress of surgery.
How do you stay ahead of the latest advancements in the aesthetic industry?
I’m deeply committed to continuous learning. I regularly attend industry conferences and workshops to keep abreast of new trends and technologies. My love for innovation means I’m always on the hunt for the next big thing, ensuring our clients get solutions that are not only effective but also customized to their unique beauty and wellness dreams.
What do you think sets Roseyard Aesthetics apart from others in Manhattan?
In Manhattan, we blend European elegance with cuttingedge tech for a truly luxurious beauty experience. Our personalized care is about tuning into our client’s unique needs, focusing on wellness that shines from the inside out. Additionally, our exclusive partnership with luxury skincare brands allows us to offer premium products that elevate the results of our services.
Given your busy schedule, how do you maintain your wellness and beauty routine?
Every day, I meditate, clearing my mind and zapping stress away, setting me up to tackle the world with a calm, laser-focused mindset. Pair that with a CODAGE skincare regimen that pampers my skin to perfection, and I’m feeling my best. And, of course, with regular HydraFacial, Endospheres, and Moxi treatments, I’m always on top of my game!
What is your personal favorite treatment at Roseyard Aesthetics, and why do you love it?
My beauty routine is my secret weapon. The BBL+ Moxi series every fall and spring is my skin’s superhero. This combination rejuvenates the skin, addressing pigmentation and improving texture, which is perfect for maintaining a vibrant complexion year-round. I also incorporate HydraFacials with CODAGE products every 3-4 weeks to keep my skin fresh and glowing—no filter needed. Of course, weekly Endospheres therapy. It’s like a spa day for my lymphatic system, revitalizing my body.
Regarding injectables, Xeomin is my go-to for keeping those muscles in check, ensuring a natural, refreshed appearance. You can trust that it will enhance your natural beauty. For areas that need a little extra boost, I turn to Radiesse. This collagen booster is a game-changer for my décolleté, knees, and hands. It helps maintain firmness and elasticity, ensuring these areas look as youthful as the rest of my skin.
Thanks to these treatments, I’m always on top of my game, radiating confidence and a healthy glow. They’ve become an integral part of my beauty routine, helping me look and feel my best every day.
Do you have plans to expand Roseyard Aesthetics to other locations or introduce new product lines?
At Roseyard Aesthetics, we’re excited to transform into the ultimate one-stop beauty destination, offering a luxurious, private club-like atmosphere. We’re dedicated to keeping our clients thrilled and on the cutting edge of beauty trends. We’re also considering developing a premium skincare line crafted with top-notch, scientifically backed ingredients designed to elevate skin’s glow to extraordinary heights.
How does Elena Feinstein relax?
To unwind, I dive into transcendental meditation, my serene escape that clears the mind and sets the stage for a day of calm and focus. It’s like hitting the pause button in life’s chaos. Pilates is another favorite—a workout that feels like a gentle symphony for the body and mind, my secret weapon for staying flexible and strong.
Of course, nothing beats a leisurely walk with my dog in Central Park. The fresh air, vibrant foliage, and my dog’s wagging tail create the perfect moment of relaxation in the heart of bustling New York. It’s all about mixing mindfulness.

In every aspect of her work, Dr. Marisa Garshick exemplifies the qualities of a dedicated and forward-thinking dermatologist. Her blend of expertise, compassion, and commitment to innovation positions her as a beacon of excellence in the ever-evolving field of dermatology.
We met with Dr. Garstick recently to find out more about her practice.
Share a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue dermatology.
Growing up, I struggled with acne and recognized the importance of feeling good about yourself in the skin that you are in. I wanted to be a dermatologist to help people feel like the best version of themselves while improving their overall quality of life.
What are some common misconceptions about dermatology that you encounter? That it is just skincare and pimple popping. Dermatology requires specific training, including at least three years focused on dermatology, in addition to an internship and medical school, to learn over three thousand diagnoses, including chronic medical conditions. Dermatologists are considered the experts in hair, skin, and nails.
What are your thoughts on the growing popularity of natural and organic skincare products?
Ultimately, skincare can be a personal choice, and if someone feels more comfortable using natural or organic products, which may be fine. However, people need to know that just because something is natural doesn’t necessarily make it better. Some natural products may contain fragrances or oils that contribute to skin sensitivity and irritation.
What do you find most rewarding about your work as a dermatologist?
Building long-lasting patient relationships is one of dermatologists’ most rewarding parts. It is an honor to have people trust me with their skin, and I look forward to seeing them year after year and visit after visit. I love watching patients gain confidence and hearing about how their quality of life has improved by helping their skin. Being able to save someone’s life by identifying and diagnosing skin cancer is always a humbling part of being a dermatologist.
Lastly, what are your top tips for maintaining healthy skin as we age?
The most important thing you can do to maintain healthy skin as you age is to use sunscreen daily to protect the skin from UV damage. UV rays can contribute to signs of skin aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and skin sagging. Other tips include always removing makeup at night, as this helps to minimize potential skin irritation and sensitivity and remembering to moisturize the skin to keep it looking hydrated and plump.

VW’S 2024 ATLAS SEL PREMIUM SUV
DESIGNED FOR COMFORT & A CROWD
By Jenny Peters
Standing beside the Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium SUV, you first realize how big this vehicle is. Like the much more expensive Cadillac Escalade, the Atlas is so tall that talking across the roof is challenging, even for tall people. Then, when you climb inside and take the wheel, you’ll discover how wide this mid-size SUV is, mimicking the Escalade in taking up most of a standard lane.
The version we tested is the most expensive of the Atlas’ iterations (the SEL Premium package starts at $52,890 MSRP, while the bottom-of-the-line Atlas SE can be had for $37,995); it’s a far cry from the Escalade’s topof-the-line V-Series listing at $152,295. So, while the Volkswagen Atlas may not carry movie stars to galas and premieres, it is undoubtedly an SUV designed for comfort—and a crowd!
SUPERB INTERIOR
The interior boasts three rows of seats, allowing seven passengers to ease on down the road, sitting on soft Vienna leather (only found in the SEL Premium) as they go. There’s a lot of legroom in the rear rows, and the first—and second-row seats heat, a much-loved feature in the dead of winter.
The Atlas SEL Premium features a Harmon Kardon premium audio system, six USB charging ports to keep you juiced up on the go and connectivity to curate your music experience.
The large console display is where you find an essential element of the Atlas, what Volkswagen calls its “4MOTION” engine control panel. The SUV features Eco, Comfort, Sport, Offroad, and Snow drive modes, including four-wheel drive on the SEL Premium. That’s a good thing, as driving this vehicle in Eco or Comfort mode means too much slip-sliding away when negotiating turns or lane changes. Move into Sport mode and find the control you need while negotiating city traffic, windy mountain roads, or high-speed highway driving.
The Atlas engine is the same no matter which iteration of the SUV you choose: a turbocharged four-cylinder model that puts out 269 horsepower and 273 poundfeet of torque. It has good pickup and will tow five thousand pounds behind it. This gas-powered machine gets 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
THE EXTRAS
This SUV is clearly designed for people with families that need to be shuttled around, which makes the safety features extra important to those loading kids into the car.
Excellent driving aids like the adaptive front lighting LED system (AFS) take night driving to another level by automatically switching from brights to dims, sensing darkness levels and oncoming vehicles. The rain-sensing front windshield wipers help you concentrate more clearly on the road.
Also, add rigid “safety cage” construction designed to protect passengers by distributing crash forces away from the seats and the ICRS. This crash response system automatically turns off the fuel and the pump unlocks the doors. It activates hazard lights, in addition to the six protective airbags, and it’s no surprise that the 2024 Atlas was designated an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick.
Plus, there’s a front assist, which warns of collision and automatically brakes if a pedestrian or cyclist suddenly appears, as well as a parking assist and lane change side assist (avoiding blind-spot errors), all combining to make the Atlas an extra-safe and family-friendly vehicle.
DRIVE CAREFREE
To sweeten the deal, Volkswagen also includes its “Carefree Coverage” on all Atlas models. This coverage features two years or 20,000 miles of free standard maintenance, three years or 36,000 miles of roadside assistance at no charge, and four years/50,000 miles of limited new vehicle warranty coverage. Overall, the Volkswagen Atlas is an SUV that does the job, whether filling the car with a kids’ soccer team, towing the boat to the lake, or loading a gal pal’s ski weekend group and gear quickly. Admittedly, it’s not quite as bling as an Escalade, but it is easier on the pocketbook and does pretty much everything you ask it to do, with extra safety built in at every turn.

ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS
Spotlight: Essex & Saratoga Counties
The Adirondacks are renowned for their rugged beauty, and during the fall, they become a canvas of color. With over six million acres of protected land, Adirondack Park offers some of the most spectacular fall foliage in the state. The region’s vast forests turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a stunning contrast against the evergreen conifers.
One of the most popular ways to experience the fall colors in the is by taking a scenic drive along the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87). The stretch from Lake George to Lake Placid is particularly scenic, offering panoramic views of the mountains draped in autumnal splendor. For those who prefer a more immersive experience, hiking trails such as the Cascade Mountain Trail or the High Peaks Wilderness provide opportunities to get close to the foliage while enjoying the crisp mountain air.
Lake Placid, a charming village in the heart of the Adirondacks, is a prime destination for fall foliage enthusiasts. The surrounding area offers numerous vantage points, including Whiteface Mountain, where visitors can take a gondola ride to the summit for a breathtaking view of the foliage from above. The reflection of the colorful leaves on the surface of Mirror Lake is another sight not to be missed.
CATSKILL MOUNTAINS
Spotlight: Sullivan & Ulster Counties
Just a short drive from New York City, the Catskill Mountains offer a quick escape into nature’s autumnal embrace. Known for their rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque streams, the Catskills come alive with color in the fall. The region’s diverse tree species, including sugar maples, oaks, and hickories, create a vibrant palette that attracts leafpeepers from near and far.
The Catskill Scenic Byway, which runs through the heart of the mountains, is a popular route for those looking to take in the fall foliage. The byway offers numerous scenic overlooks where visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding landscape. The Kaaterskill Clove, with its dramatic cliffs and waterfalls, is a must-see spot for anyone exploring the region.
For a more active adventure, the Catskills’ hiking trails provide spectacular views of the fall foliage. The Overlook Mountain Trail, which leads to a fire tower with a 360-degree view, is particularly popular in autumn. The region also boasts several charming towns, such as Woodstock and Phoenicia, where visitors can enjoy local art, cuisine, and culture while surrounded by the season’s beauty.
HUDSON VALLEY
Spotlight: Dutchess & Putnam Counties
The Hudson Valley is one of New York State’s most iconic regions. In the fall, it becomes a corridor of color stretching from Westchester County to Albany. The valley’s unique combination of rolling hills, farmland, and historic estates provides a picturesque setting for fall foliage. The region’s proximity to New York City makes it a fabulous destination for a weekend getaway.
One of the best ways to experience the fall colors in Hudson Valley is by taking a scenic drive along Route 9W, which runs parallel to the Hudson River. The route offers views of the river and the surrounding hills, which are ablaze with color during the season’s peak. Make time for the Walkway Over the Hudson, a pedestrian bridge between Poughkeepsie and Highland, offers a unique perspective on the foliage, allowing visitors to walk above the treetops.
The Hudson Valley is also home to several historic estates surrounded by lush landscapes, perfect for viewing fall foliage. The Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park and the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown are notable examples. These estates offer guided tours of the grounds, where visitors can stroll through gardens and woodlands awash in autumnal hues.
River cruises along the Hudson River are popular for those who prefer to take in the scenery from the water. These cruises offer a leisurely way to enjoy the fall colors while learning about the region’s history and ecology.
FINGER LAKES
Spotlight: Cayuga, Ontario & Seneca Counties
The Finger Lakes region in central New York is known for its picturesque lakes, rolling vineyards, and charming small towns. In the fall, the landscape is transformed into a symphony of color as the leaves change, making it a popular destination for wine aficianados and nature lovers. The region’s mix of hardwood forests, open farmland, and deep gorges creates a diverse and dynamic fall foliage display.
The Finger Lakes region has numerous state parks offering excellent fall foliage viewing opportunities. With its dramatic gorge and waterfalls, Watkins Glen State Park is a standout location. The park’s hiking trails wind through the gorge, providing stunning foliage views against the backdrop of cascading water. Letchworth State Park, often called the “Grand Canyon of the East,” is another must-visit destination. The park’s deep gorge and towering cliffs are particularly striking when framed by the brilliant colors of fall.
The region’s wineries and vineyards also offer a unique way to experience the fall foliage. Many of the wineries in the Finger Lakes are situated on hillsides overlooking the lakes, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Enjoy a glass of local wine while enjoying the breathtaking scenery, creating a truly memorable autumn experience.
LONG ISLAND Spotlight: Nassau & Suffolk Counties
While Long Island is often celebrated for its pristine beaches and bustling summer tourism, it also offers a surprisingly beautiful and often overlooked autumn experience. Long Island’s unique blend of coastal scenery, historic estates, vineyards, and wooded parks provide a diverse and colorful backdrop for fall foliage, making it a hidden gem for leaf peepers. Unlike the mountainous regions upstate, Long Island’s foliage season is more subtle but equally captivating, characterized by the golden yellows, deep oranges, and vibrant reds of oak, maple, and hickory trees.
The timing of peak foliage on Long Island typically occurs later than in the more northern parts of New York State, usually from mid to late October and sometimes into early November. The island’s coastal climate and warmer temperatures extend the foliage season, offering ample opportunities to enjoy the colors long after other regions have passed their peak.
A true favorite is the North Fork Wine Trail, known for its wineries and vineyards. It offers a unique way to experience fall foliage. As the grapevines take on their golden autumn hues, the North Fork Wine Trail becomes a picturesque route for exploring the region’s natural beauty. Many wineries along the trail offer outdoor seating with views of the vineyards, allowing visitors to enjoy a glass of local wine while taking in the fall colors.
Montauk Point State Park, at the easternmost tip of Long Island, provides a different perspective on fall foliage. The contrast between the golden foliage and the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean creates a striking visual effect, making Montauk a unique destination for fall foliage. The park’s trails offer sweeping views of the coastline and the surrounding landscape, providing a peaceful and scenic escape from the hustle and bustle.
Lastly, take Route 25A, also known as the Long Island Heritage Trail, which offers a scenic drive through some of the region’s most historic and picturesque areas. The route passes through charming towns like Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington, and Stony Brook, where visitors can enjoy fall colors, local history, shops, and restaurants. The road is lined with mature trees that create a canopy of color, especially in late October.
Fall foliage in New York State is more than just a visual spectacle; it celebrates nature’s beauty and the changing seasons. Whether you’re hiking through the Adirondacks, cruising along the Hudson River, or sipping wine in the Finger Lakes, witnessing the leaves change is an experience that stays with you long after the season has passed.

DISCOVERING VERMONT
FOLIAGE, FARMS & FALL CHARM
By Melanie Carden
Whether it’s been a spell since you’ve visited Vermont or it’s your go-to hub for New England charm, the small-but-mighty state is full of surprises—especially in autumn. On the one hand, you can always count on Vermont’s Norman Rockwell-esque landscapes, but there are also surprises around every corner. Recently, I shimmied past all the maple syrup jugs—tastetesting along the way, of course—to explore properties distinctly illuminative of Vermont’s blend of rugged Northeastern beauty and heartfelt dedication to the kinship of place and people.
Kimpton Taconic Hotel Nestled in the cozy village of Manchester, Vermont, the Kimpton Taconic Hotel, part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Luxury & Lifestyle collection, doles out finery and adventure in equal measure. Manchester—situated near the Batten Kill River with the Taconic Range and the Green Mountains looming—offers grand autumn views and the perfect playground for the hotel’s Land Rover Driving Experience. Explore the forest with a certified Land Rover guide and take the wheel for a gnarly but manageable off-road adventure.
The hotel seamlessly exudes a home again ambiance with its stellar staff, cozy fireplaces, and many locally sourced foods and other delights. The Copper Grouse Restaurant & Bar is a lovely spot with an ever-changing menu but make the most of autumn and order a picnic basket.
Nearby, indulge in the Manchester Designer Outlets, Smuggler’s Notch Distillery Tasting Room, the famed Northshire Bookstore, and the nostalgic fun at Pastime Pinball. Among the offsite dining options, Pearl’s Place & Pantry is a newer, not-tomiss spot—excellent BBQ and a menu of classics and creativity. The Kimpton Taconic Hotel offers guests complimentary passes to the Hildene Estate (the Lincoln family home), and the fire pits and warm cider await. Info: taconichotel.com
Highwood Retreat The husband-and-wife team behind Highwood Retreat in Springfield mastered the enchantment of luxe rusticity. If I didn’t know any better, I’d think they’d cherry-pick from the movie set of Out of Africa. If you think a tent in autumn would be too cold, I can share my tent-stay summary: it’s perfectly toasty. Thoughtfully equipped with a Vermont Castings Wood Stove and heaters, the thick canvas safari tent holds its own against the New England elements.
These ensuite bathroom-style rentals sit on the outskirts of the woods, where guests can enjoy the crisp autumn air while walking the well-groomed trail. Warm up next to the fire in the lush velvet chairs, get lost in a book, or arrange for craft cocktail delivery. Not long after I ordered a locally sourced charcuterie board and an Old-Fashioned, I heard the purr of an ATV coming up the glade, and I was handed a vintage fishing basket. A crystal shaker and top-notch cocktail were tucked inside, which I sipped slowly and intentionally. For a heartier fare, the picturesque village of Bellows Falls is a quick 15-minute drive; Wunderbar is lovely. You’re welcome to bring your dog, and it’s worth checking dates for local fall happenings like the Chester Festival or the Flannel Festival at nearby Rockingham Hill Farm. Info: highwoodretreat.com
The Hermitage Inn A mile and a half from Mt. Snow is picturesque West Dover. It’s also where The Hermitage Inn’s autumn Apples & Oranges cocktail draws folks from near and far. Much like the cocktail, the inn offers a classic Vermont experience with a twist. Guests enjoy reel and fly fishing at the Hermitage Inn Trout Pond, archery, hiking, and the inn’s four fire pits. Given its renowned wine cellar, it’s no surprise the sommelier offers private tastings—an unquestionably sublime and memorable experience. Choose from tasting themes like Old World vs New World or the West Coast Throwdown, featuring wines from California, Oregon, and Washington.
The inn’s culinary scene—The Tavern and Birches Dining Room—channels quintessential Vermont with its decadent preparations of venison, duck, dry-aged steaks, and contemporary American plates. Hopefully, as the weather grows colder, the inn will activate the popular après gondola experience—a luxe land-based gondola for Champagne sipping and other finery. Plan to visit during the fall wine festival. Info: thehermitageinnvermont.com
Big Picture Farm The idyllic farmstead creamery welcomes guests for goat hangout sessions or, better yet, farm stays. Peppered across the farm, three rentals await—all designed with a keen sense of universally appealing quietude. The spaces are generous and gracious—from Scandinavian Rais (gas) fireplaces to Matouk Linens. Of note, the many original works of art all have a story to tell, and the owners can share the family’s artistic roots, which further weave their journey into this land—with these beloved goats.
I spent a few peaceful nights in the solar cabin, met (and snuggled) the goats, and visited their farm store just down the road. You can expect their many treats— caramels, chocolates, and cheeses—and sundries featuring their iconic goat illustrations. This is the spot if you’re looking for a dreamy autumn getaway—where you can simmer a soup all day into the night while leafpeeping from a grassy knoll. Make a weekend of it by visiting during the late-October Fall Fest at Mettowee Mint in nearby Dorset. Info: bigpicturefarm.com
FOUR SEASONS NAPA VALLEY
A LUXURY WINE COUNTRY RETREAT
By Stacey Zable | Photos courtesy of Four Seasons
Upon entering our expansive three-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bath residential villa at the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley in Calistoga, I almost wished I had more friends and family nearby to join us. This was the house of my dreams. Set in Calistoga with a backyard facing rows of vines from the resort’s on-site winery, it was even more special as my husband and I shared it with our two young adult daughters.
The 2,500-square-foot villa sleeps six adults, making it ideal for families with adult children or couples traveling together to Napa. The resort boasts 85 hotel rooms and suites, and 20 two-, three-, and four-bedroom expansive villas. Some of the villas also include an outside hot tub or private pool. A stay comes with the elevated level of service you’d expect from Four Seasons.
DINE IN OR OUT
With an extensive gourmet open-concept kitchen, living room, dining room tables inside and out, plus an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and nearby fire pit, you can easily entertain or eat your meals within the three-bedroom villa we stayed in. Better yet, the resort can send a family picnic for lunch or dinner to your door, or in this case, your backyard table, to enjoy the sunset as it dips beneath the vines. Dine on charcuterie, sandwiches, and cookies, washed down by your choice of wine—all that arrives in a lovely picnic basket. An in-room dining menu is also available 24/7. Or why not opt for resident chef service and enjoy authentic in-room personal dining?
On-site restaurants include TRUSS for casual dining throughout the day, plus snacks, wine, or cocktails. It was our go-to place for lunch for its salads, sandwiches, and pizza selection. CAMPO Poolside for Mexican cuisine offers an option by the resort’s two outdoor swimming pools. For fine dining, make reservations at the intimate Auro, a Michelin-starred restaurant for a seasonal, seven-course tasting menu that changes weekly.
GRAPE ADVENTURES
Napa Valley’s more than 400 wineries and over 90 tasting rooms are close by, but one winery not to be missed is the Four Season’s on-site 4.7-acre Elusa Winery, literally right outside your door. Most of the resort’s accommodations have views of vines, offering a true sense of place.
The Elusa Winery was our first stop upon arrival at the hotel after the thrill of seeing our beautiful accommodations. We opted for the 90-minute “The Evolution of Elusa” guided tour and tasting. We felt as if the winery belonged to us as we were driven a short way back and forth via golf cart to the organically hand-farmed vineyard, followed by a walk through the wine-making facilities and storage area. We were even shown where the residential villa owners keep their own private collections. When it was time to sample Elusa’s vintages, we were treated to an excellent selection paired with snacks in the winery’s relaxing and well-appointed Tasting Salon. The table featured a lovely touch of a personalized menu that outlined the wines we were trying and the accompaniments.
RELAXATION & WELLNESS
The resort’s two pools—one for families and one adultonly—include two hot tubs. We opted to rent a Super Cabana at the adult pool one day. It comes with sofa seating and a flat-screen TV, but more importantly, a dedicated cabana host who delivered amenities such as fresh fruit and a selection of beverages. This allowed us to relax inside the cabana for some additional family time in between dips in the pool.
When it’s time to truly be pampered, Four Seasons Spa Talisa delivers. The host of treatments includes traditional treatments, such as Serenity Massage, and others that incorporate local ingredients, like the Vineyard Scrub with grape seeds or the Bountiful Earth Wrap using the thermal mud the area is known for. Be sure to also enjoy your time in the Spa Garden and the outdoor heated whirlpool. A fitness center and Yoga and other fitness classes offered on the weekends continue the wellness vibe.

CANYON CAPERS
DISCOVERING BRYCE CANYON COUNTRY
Article & Photos by Neil J Tandy
Bryce Canyon National Park, Bryce Canyon Country, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument—visions of this slice of geological heaven in Southern Utah are of towering red mountains, deep canyons, mysterious hoodoos, and magnificent rock arches; as I discovered on my recent trip out West, it is this and a whole lot more.
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS
Once I had picked up my baggage at the airport, I headed outside the great-looking arrivals hall to meet the rest of the tour group and the shuttle for the four-and-a-half-hour drive. Through increasingly beautiful scenery, our driver and tour guide, Michelle, was a veritable fount of knowledge regarding geology, history, customs, legends and other interesting stories. In no time at all, we glanced left from Highway 12 to our first port of call, the magnificent Clear Sky Resorts Bryce Canyon, where we were met and very warmly welcomed by owner Hal and his management team.
Touted as The Future of Luxury Glamping, Clear Sky Resorts Utah consists of around 60 glass fronted domes, in various sizes and configurations, sleeping up to 4, including my favorite, Supernova, complete with a disco floor, disco ball and disco décor!
All dome bathrooms feature something I had never seen before: Bluetooth-enabled mirrors that display the temperature but also connect to mobile devices. This allows the occupant to play their choice of music from their own playlists while relaxing under the soothing water of the incredible rainfall shower! Initially, it is a little disconcerting to be in accommodations that anyone can see into. Even so, the configuration of the domes, scattered throughout the desert valley floor, is such that no dome looks directly into another. The motorized drapes afford extra privacy for those who want it.
With the top drapes open on a clear night and the dome in complete darkness, one falls asleep in complete luxury while gazing at the stars in the night sky, devoid of the light pollution that spoils the view in towns and cities.
On our first night at Clear Sky Resorts, we met at one of the largest glass dome restaurants in the world, Sky Nova Café Bar & Grill. This restaurant features a stunning 28-foot floor-to-ceiling panoramic glass wall overlooking the resort’s spectacular scenery.
We were very privileged to be the first guests at the restaurant for the inaugural dinner. The food was incredible, befitting the five-star luxury of this incredible destination. The chicken that I had for my entrée was out of this world. It was washed down with a wonderful mocktail and ice-cold water, served in beautifully decorated Clear Sky Resorts glasses. Then, there was a wickedly decadent ganache dessert, bigger than I had ever seen!
The restaurant/bar is celestial themed, with a futuristic twist. Even the silverware echoes that, changing hues as the knives, forks, and spoons are turned and seen at different angles in different lights—most definitely a first for me!
At the end of a long day, we retired to our respective domes and a restful sleep on a European-style bed with a plush five-star mattress and luxurious linens. I was looking forward to hiking in Bryce Canyon the following day.
BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK
It was day two and we woke to heavy rain, as August is monsoon season. Not to be discouraged, our local guide, April, loaded us into our transport and we set off for the National Park, 15 miles from Clear Sky Resorts. Alas, as we entered the park and ascended in altitude up towards 8,800 feet above sea level, the rain got heavier and fog enveloped every viewing spot, making for some interesting views over Natural Arches and Agua Canyon. April kept us entertained with a lot of historical facts and some delightful stories about the legendary Butch Cassidy, who grew up in the area.
Weather reports suggested that there would be a window of clear weather later in the afternoon, so it was decided to head out of the park, have lunch in the nearby village of Tropic, and then return to hike a shorter trail.
We went to I.D.K. Barbecue, and I had some incredible brisket with potato salad—simple, wholesome Southern food—eaten at picnic tables in the cute venue. Others had chicken, pulled pork, salads, and lashings of sauces, both BBQ and spicy, which everyone wolfed down with delight!
Eventually, the weather cleared, the sun was out, and it was time to head back to Bryce to hike the Queens Garden trail. We descended along the trail from Sunrise Point, marveling at the red sandstone landscape, peaks, troughs, and many hoodoos. We reached the bottom of the trail and looked back up to see the Queen Victoria Hoodoo—a red sandstone monolith that looks remarkably like the queen.
The hike back up to Sunrise Point to complete the 1.8mile round trip is moderately challenging, with an elevation gain of some 450 feet up to 8,100 feet above sea level. Water is essential, especially at high altitude, and regular stops on some of the steeper inclines can be very beneficial. The majesty and sheer beauty of the Bryce Canyon Amphitheatre far outweighed any weariness imparted by this hike!
EBENEZER BRYCE
Bryce Canyon was named for Scottish missionary and Mormon pioneer Ebenezer Bryce and there is much in the area that celebrates his time there. One of those places is Ebenezer’s Barn and Grill in Bryce Canyon City. It is a huge place with a big stage up front and caters to many, many patrons eager to partake in a cowboy-style meal and listen to excellent country music at the dinner show.
On the night we were there, the music was supplied by Due West, playing a mix of songs written by themselves and other songwriters, providing a perfect musical backdrop to dinner, which is served camp style, with everyone collecting their pre-ordered food from the huge tables set up to one side. A great way to end the day, before heading back to Clear Sky Resorts, where we sat by the firepits for a while.
GRAND STAIRCASE EXPLORATION
Saturday morning dawned. The weather was gorgeous, and it was time to depart Clear Sky. First on the agenda after checking out was a brief trip to Tropic to meet up with Grand Staircase ATV tours, load up in the side-by-sides, and head off into the desert for a three-hour guided tour off the beaten path, so to speak, of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument with owner Justin and his wife.
The sights were breathtaking from around 9,000 feet above sea level. We learned about the various Native American influences in the area and how the canyons, peaks, and valleys were formed from an original inland sea. What blew me away was finding hundreds of fossilized oyster shells at such an altitude, a remnant of that ancient sea. Another of those experiences when I couldn’t put my camera down!
The tour was followed by a great lunch at Pizza Place in Bryce Canyon Inn, then we headed off to our next accommodation stop, Ofland Escalante, a great resort offering a choice of accommodations, from tiny cabins to vintage Airstreams to deluxe cabins and camping. The facilities and amenities are varied and top class, including a drivein theater, complete with vintage cars from which to watch the movie!
That evening, we headed into Escalante for dinner at 4th West Pub, the only bar on Highway 12. Great American and Mexican-style food at a great price—I had an incredible pastrami burger that went down very well after a busy day in the desert!
THE SLOT CANYON SQUEEZE
Our last full day promised to be epic. Hiking in slot canyons with Excursions of Escalante was a brand-new experience, one that turned out not to be for the fainthearted or those who suffer from claustrophobia.
Upon arrival, Amie met us, gave us a rundown of what to expect and then kitted us all out with the necessary backpacks, helmets, harnesses, plenty of water and packed away our lunches from Escalante Outfitters across the street.
Owner Rick arrived and took us through a safety instruction briefing, checking that everyone was medically fit for the experience and imparting of his vast knowledge, gained over many years as a local. His resume is way too long to go into, but he is absolutely one of the very best to be with!
Canyoneering in slot canyons certainly puts you through the mill a bit physically. Rick took us to what he said was one of the most difficult he takes groups to, the canyon walls being only 15 inches apart at times, and often no more than 2 feet, but we negotiated it all. I came away with a feeling of accomplishment at having conquered the challenge, along with a lot of scrapes and bruises as a reminder. Add to this that Rick also took us rappelling, it was an afternoon well spent! That night was spent by the firepits at Ofland Escalante, playing games, toasting smores and relaxing our aching bodies.
The next day, the drive back to Salt Lake City airport featured even more spectacular scenery. Capitol Reef National Park was a highlight, and before the slow descent back towards the airport, it reached an elevation of 11,000 feet.
I wish I had been able to spend more time in such an incredible destination, but I am grateful for the time I had and I left with a promise to myself to return.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Getting There: Traveling from New York, there are three main airports that serve the area, Salt Lake City International, Harry Reid International Las Vegas and Cedar City Airport (with a transfer at SLC). I chose to fly into Salt Lake City, being the closest of the three airports to JFK, with a flight time of just over five hours.

CHARTING THE WATERS TRAVEL
INSIDE WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTE
By Laurie Bain Wilson
Cape Cod is best known for its miles and miles of sandy strands, towering National Seashore dunes—and is also home to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The institute’s scientists and engineers have made groundbreaking discoveries in ocean ecosystems, climate change, and marine geology.
Founded in 1930, WHOI is renowned for its fleet of research vessels and advanced underwater vehicles, including the famous submersible Alvin, which has explored hydrothermal vents and the wreck of the Titanic. The institution also plays a crucial role as educating future oceanographers. As climate change intensifies, WHOI’s work has become increasingly vital for understanding and protecting our planet’s oceans.
The WHOI Visitor Center has fall hours through October 26th. Visitors can pick up a map and take advantage of free walking tour led by WHOI guides. Visitors are invited to pick up a map and ask questions of the WHOI staff and volunteers. (Also pick up a thoughtful holiday gift—purchases contribute to ocean science.) Tours take place through the dock area, restricted village facilities and an up-close look at research vessels and a look at the personnel sphere of the iconic submersible Alvin. Also take advantage of the Resilient Woods Hole (RWH) Climate Walking Trail. The 2.2 mile walk provides 12 stops that provides resilience planning to protect the coastal village from dire climate impacts.

HIDDEN GEMS
DISCOVERING GERMANY’S UNESCO TRAIL
By Jenny Peters
If you’re like me, hearing the words “UNESCO World Heritage Site” makes you want to run straight to see that place. For those are the 1223 “properties” (as they designate them) worldwide that the organization deems the “places on earth that are of outstanding universal value to humanity,” places that “are to be protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.”
UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, was adopted by the U.N. in 1945, but its designation as a World Heritage Site began in 1972. We think Germany is an ideal place to visit.
GERMANY’S
NEWEST UNESCO SITES
As of July 2024, when Deutschland added two new UNESCO properties, the country that is the size of Montana now boasts 54 sites. The two new UNESCO sites are in Saxony (the Hermhuter Brüdergemeine settlements) in the east and Mecklenburg-Vorpommen (the Residence Ensemble Schwerin) in the northeast. The two places celebrate distinctly distinct cultural landmarks.
Discover a lavish palace at the Residence Ensemble Schwerin, constructed in the 1600s and remodeled by a grand duke in the mid-1800s. The palace is surrounded by two lush gardens and a picturesque lake. The huge complex includes a theater, museum, three churches, a hunter’s lodge, stables, and even a steam laundry, making it an intriguing place to spend hours wandering through.
The Hermhuter Brüdergemeine settlements are a completely different experience, as they were one of the original Moravian Church (a Protestant Christian sect) townships, established in 1722. Distinctive architecture, including church and congregation homes, opens up a place created in reaction to the Catholic Church that still has active members today.
FASCINATING PLACES
Some of our favorite UNESCO sites in Germany are in very familiar places. All of Germany is easily accessible via its high-speed train system, so moving from one place to another is relatively simple (just remember to make seat reservations before boarding). Some are off the beaten path, fascinating spots you may have never heard of before.
Start in Berlin, where the Museum Island (Museumsinsel) encompasses five museums located on Spree Island in the heart of the city. Built in the 1800s, the museums feature everything from famed items of classical antiquity (Nefertiti’s bust is in the Neues Museum) to modern sculptures, paintings, and so much more. Buy the Museum Pass Berlin to enter all five and numerous others around town.
Then consider taking one of German Tourism’s suggested “Routes to UNESCO World Heritage Sites,” their eight curated itineraries that crisscross the country. From Berlin, take the Active Route, which includes stops to see Bauhaus architecture in Dessau, the ancient beech forests in Grumsin, and the palaces and parks of Potsdam along the way.
NEXT STOP FRANKFURT
Choose Frankfurt as a gateway to a host of southern and western World Heritage stops, following your path or another of the designated routes. Don’t miss Cologne Cathedral, that towering Gothic edifice that is steps from the train station. It began in 1248 and finally finished in 1880, and it’s spectacular. Be sure to head up to the tower, where incredible city views await.
Spend a few days in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO site. It is part of the Family Route and is filled with castles (Marksburg is a medieval gem), ancient fortresses (Ehrenbreitstein), picturesque villages, and plenty of good food and wine.
Find more exceptional wine and much of Martin Luther’s legacy in Worms, Speyer, and Mainz, three small cities near Frankfurt that are also known by UNESCO as the ShUM sites for their Jewish communities established there in the 11th century. On the Time Travel Route (which also takes you to Munich), visit ancient synagogues, neighborhoods, and the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Europe
THE INDUSTRIAL CULTURE ROUTE
Take the route from Frankfurt to Essen, the city once the heart of the Krupp manufacturing war machine. Signifying a severe shift of values, Essen was the European Green Capital in 2017 and is the home of the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, which sounds a bit dry but is a remarkable place to visit.
Stuttgart, the home of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche and the original automobile city is also on that route. While those famed automobile marques offer factory and museum tours, the UNESCO property there is part of the Le Corbusier designation that spans seven countries. A guided tour of the Weissenhof Estate architecture enclave includes two of his buildings, with others envisioned by Gropius and van de Rohe.
SPA TOWNS
Finish out your UNESCO Germany tour in Baden-Baden, one of the most beautiful Great Spa Towns of Europe, where you can relax, take the waters, get a massage, and wander the gardens, hills, and scenic byways as part of the Wellness Route. It’s a delightful way to close out your first taste of Germany’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a place sure to lure you back to another Allemagne visit to explore even more.

REST & RELAX
THE NEW FRONTIER IN TRAVEL
By Laurie Bain Wilson
Anxiety, stress, burnout and rising mental health challenges have transformed us into a nation of insomniacs, often awake at night craving a vacay or at least a weekend getaway. Finally, hotels are realizing that, above all else, they are in the sleep business. And that guests want to sleep. Call it: Sleep Tourism.
Regardless of generation, the number one reason people want to travel in 2024 is to rest and recharge according to Hilton’s 2024 Trends Report. The company partnered with sleep science expert Dr. Rebecca Robbins for sound advice on ways guests can rest best in hotels across their portfolio realizing that travelers are invested in getting a good night’s sleep while on the road.
Hotels have your back, literally, with special temperatureadjusted beds, weighted blankets, pillow menus—and amenities like sleep gummies, sleepy time tea service and even hand-held steamers in Canopy by Hilton’s guest rooms “in case guests want to steam their pajamas” along with Canopy slipper socks for cold feet.
Here, luxury getaways that are easy to get to by train and car, so no worry about jet lag, and airport chair naps waiting for delayed flights.

DESIGNING DREAMS
THE KROESSER + STRAT STORY
By Patricia Canole
In the vibrant world of interior design, where creativity meets functionality, Kroesser + Strat Design has emerged as a beacon of innovation and style. For over 15 years, Anna Kroesser and Amelia Strat have been weaving their magic across the East Coast and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on luxury residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces. Their journey is not just a tale of success, but a testament to the power of collaboration, passion, and a client-centered approach in the ever-evolving realm of design.
Every great story has a beginning, and for Kroesser + Strat, it started with two individuals whose paths were destined to intertwine. Amelia Strat’s love affair with interior design began in childhood, a passion that would shape her future career. On the other hand, Anna Kroesser’s journey into the world of design took a different route, blossoming through her experiences in event production and design.
GENESIS OF A POWERHOUSE
When these two creative minds joined forces, magic happened. Their diverse backgrounds and complementary skills created a synergy that would become the cornerstone of their success. But how did they transform this partnership into a thriving business that has stood the test of time for over a decade?
The story of Kroesser + Strat is one of passion, creativity, and unwavering commitment to excellence. From luxury residences to commercial spaces and hospitality projects, they’ve left their mark on the East Coast and beyond, creating environments that are as functional as they are beautiful.
Share a childhood memory that sparked your interest in interior design.
Anna: As my mother will attest, I was always rearranging my room. I did it at least twice a year. Not just the furniture, but the knick-knacks, the artwork (aka Teen Bop posters) I had on the wall. I always just felt compelled to recreate this space.
Amelia: I remember my parents hired a “decorator” when they moved us into what would be our childhood home. I got to pick out my own bedroom décor and the rest was history. I was also constantly rearranging the furniture in my bedroom, and I fell in love with the process.
How do you balance creating a visually striking space with ensuring it remains livable and comfortable for your clients?
Amelia: We encourage our clients to really consider the quality of the pieces they’re purchasing. High quality furniture can and is often gorgeous and unique looking, and good design and materials will certainly cost you more up front, but they’ll last you way longer in the end. We never want our clients to feel like their home is a showroom that they can’t use for fear of ruining it. We always consider the wearability vs. cost of the things we’re suggesting plus the way in which they’ll be used.
Walk us through your process of understanding a client’s vision and translating it into a design that exceeds their expectations.
Anna: We aim to get as much information from our client during our Discovery Phase. Some of those questions are getting to know more about them, their lifestyle, what aspects of design are important to them (i.e. performance fabrics, eco-friendly products and materials, are they vegan, etc.). Additionally, while the visual aspects of a design are important, so is the budget. It’s often hard for someone to know what their all-in budget is and don’t have a concept of what things cost.
How has your approach to design evolved over the years, and what has remained constant?
Anna: More than anything, having confidence in the designs that we put forward has been our greatest evolution. We’ve always believed in our designs. But there have been times in the past where we have bent to whatever the client thought they wanted instead of pushing for the design we knew was right for the project. And that’s not to say we don’t adore collaborating with our clients. We do and many of our best projects have been born from working closely with our clients and making it feel truly organic.
Describe a project that you feel best represents the Kroesser + Strat signature style
Amelia: Our Riverside Drive project really represents our style so well. The client’s style and ours was so aligned it felt kismet. Their home is bold and fun and colorful and sophisticated. There are so many design details we had just been wanting to incorporate in a project for so long that they all came together so beautifully.
How do you ensure that each project is unique while still carrying the Kroesser + Strat signature?
Anna: This can be hard. We use Instagram and Pinterest like everyone else for inspiration and it can be exhausting seeing a slightly altered iteration of one design over and over again on our feeds. We work hard to find pieces that haven’t been over-saturated in the industry, we try to travel as much as we can to find inspiration outside of the little black screen we are holding in our hands.
When you look back on your journey, what are you most proud of, and what do you hope will be the lasting legacy of Kroesser + Strat?
Anna: It isn’t always easy. We have had very slow seasons of work where we have worried about if we were going to be able to keep going, but then when we are busy, we are so, so busy. We haven’t nailed the process by any means, but it’s easy for me to say that the journey is what I’m most proud of. Sticking it out through the hard times, enjoying every second of the good times and looking towards the future.
Amelia: I’m most proud of us sticking with this crazy biz all these years - interior design is not for the faint of heart, I say it all the time. Whenever I tell someone what I do for a living they say, “oh cool!!” And I say, “you have no idea.” It’s a tough job. Balancing client expectations with contractor and sub challenges and budgets and unforeseen issues and delays and vendor problems, etc. But through it all, with a very sharp learning curve, we’ve stuck it out and I think we have gotten ourselves to a comfortable spot where we are both confident in ourselves and our business, and happy with where we’re at!

AUTUMN’S COZY EMBRACE
WELCOME THE LATEST HOME DÉCOR TRENDS
By Kalina Todorova, Visual Merchandising Manager/BoConcept
As leaves begin to change and the air turns crisp, our thoughts naturally turn to creating warm, inviting spaces within our homes. In the transition to autumn, interior decoration reflects the season, the circumstances of our lives, and what’s important to us. The past year has seen significant shifts in the real estate market and the economy, influencing how consumers approach home decor and furnishings.
Despite economic pressures, consumers are still willing to invest in high-quality, longlasting furniture or decor that aligns with their values. There’s a growing emphasis on pieces that are functional, durable, and inspirational. At the same time, there’s a desire for items that feel safe and calm in color, shape, and texture – a reflection of the ongoing need for a home to be a sanctuary in uncertain times.
For many consumers, this spending approach comes in the form of incremental updates rather than entire overhauls of a given room. We’re seeing a trend towards what might be called “micro-renovations”— minor changes that can significantly impact the look and feel of a space. If a spark of inspiration strikes or consumers notice a design they love, they will use this as an impetus to refresh a space.
Understanding this need for restyling or refreshing the home calls for focusing on creating moments of novelty, inspiration, and fulfillment throughout a space. Retailers and designers are responding by offering more versatile pieces and decor items that can easily update a room without requiring a complete redesign.
FUNCTIONALITY & SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability continues to be a major focus in home decor and furnishings. Consumers are increasingly interested in living lives they feel good about, which extends to their purchasing decisions. Fortunately, a beautiful space and sustainable practices are not mutually exclusive. While many consumers will investigate the sourcing and fabrication of a new piece of furniture or decor, making sustainable new purchases is just one of the ways we’re seeing people embrace this value.
For many, one of the most sustainable practices is to make the most of what they already have. This “make do and mend” mentality drives demand for high-quality, durable pieces that can withstand time. Consumers expect more from products, demanding they last longer and remain beautiful and comfortable for the entire product’s lifetime.
A focus on longevity also influences design trends. We’re seeing a move away from trendy, disposable furniture towards classic pieces with timeless appeal. These items may cost more upfront, but consumers are willing to invest in quality if they don’t need to replace them in a few years.
Another aspect of sustainability in home decor is versatility. Offering customizable furniture that can be configured in multiple ways allows consumers to adjust their pieces to fit their needs throughout distinct phases of life. For example, a modular sofa system can be rearranged to suit different room layouts or family sizes, extending its useful life.
More minor add-ons, like new arm and footrest options for existing furniture, allow consumers to refresh their existing pieces without entirely replacing furniture in excellent condition. This approach saves money and reduces waste, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers.
BRING AUTUMN INDOORS
Color will be a significant driver for consumers this fall. In recent years, consumers have been interested in more neutral colors and tones, often pairing neutral tones with other neutral tones for a cleaner, more straightforward look. While going safe with neutral colors is a beautiful, classic approach, there’s a growing need to bring more energy into the home. Color is a fantastic way to do this, and we’re seeing a shift towards bolder, more vibrant hues.
Incorporating warm colors and richer tones, like reds and dark browns, aligns with the colors associated with autumn while providing an exciting pop of color that brings a more individualized touch to the home. These autumnal hues can create a cozy, inviting atmosphere that is perfect for the season.
For those still deciding whether to paint walls or invest in large, colorful furniture pieces, accessories offer an effortless way to incorporate new colors. Well-made cushions and pillows allow consumers to embrace this trend without investing in redesigning an entire space. Throws, rugs, and even artwork can also introduce new colors and textures to a room.
When it comes to color schemes, we’re seeing two main approaches. Some consumers opt for a monotone palette, using varying shades of the same color to create depth and interest. Others embrace complementary colors from opposite sides of the color wheel, creating a more dynamic and engaging visual experience. Both approaches can create a cohesive look that is more engaging and dynamic than neutrals alone.
STATEMENT PIECES
Like consumers’ interest in incorporating new, richer colors in their spaces, a chosen statement piece is another way to transform your home. Dynamic shapes, unexpected materials, and eye-catching movement turn something as simple as a coffee or dining room table into a proper centerpiece that can transform the look of a space.
There’s is also an emphasis on standout tactical and visual textures that make an additional statement. Fabrics with multiple colors in them or mixed-material fixtures, like a combination of marble, ceramic, metal, or wood, draw the eye to a specific point in the space and create a unique look. These mixed-material pieces add visual interest and a sense of craftsmanship and quality to a room.
Color, texture, and sustainability trends often converge in the living room, allowing consumers to create a bold, customized look that best expresses their taste and values in the home’s most important room. However, these trends are also extending to other areas of the home, including bedrooms, home offices, and even kitchens and bathrooms.
As we move into autumn 2024, the overall trend in home decor is clear: consumers are looking for ways to create beautiful, comfortable, but also sustainable, personal, and adaptable spaces. Homeowners can create spaces that will bring joy and comfort for years by focusing on quality, versatility, and thoughtful design.

Dear Mindie,
I need to break up with one of my best friends. Maybe I should say “former best friend.” We’ve known each other since nursery school, and despite the periods like college and when I moved to London after school for my finance career, we’ve managed to remain close.
Lately, I feel that I’m no longer a priority to her and that the friends she’s made in her new Soho neighborhood are more important, as she’s canceled plans for me more times than not lately. I’ve talked to her, but she doesn’t seem to understand or care. What to do?
Sincerely, Concerned Friend
Dear Concerned Friend,
You’re writing to me to see if there may be any salvation for what seems like an incredible childhood friendship, which means you are a genuine friend. Know that.
In life, people change; they evolve, and that sometimes means friendships change and relationships look different. While that can be painful, it’s also important that we recognize this and know our worth, what we bring to the proverbial table, and the type of treatment we deserve. Your feelings are valid, and your experiences are real.
That said, in life, there will be times when you may show up more than a friend may or vice versa because one’s needs come in ebbs and flows, as do drama, sadness, happiness and elation.
I suggest inviting your friend for a coffee. When you meet, start the conversation by expressing your appreciation for the friendship and the memories you’ve shared. Then, gently bring up your concerns about feeling neglected and how it’s affecting you. If she still doesn’t understand your point of view or later seems to return to her current patterns of not prioritizing your time and friendship, I suggest you take a break from her. I am not saying to break up with her; rather, press pause on the situation for a while and see where the chips fall.
You may find that you are okay with the support system you have with others and that she may be better suited in your life as an acquaintance or someone to get together with on occasion—where you catch up deeply. Or you may realize that she has changed and is no longer the friend you once knew and loved. It’s okay if that is the outcome, but it’s better to know than to dance around the subject or make a hasty decision out of emotion.
Remember, every ending is a new beginning, and this situation could lead to new and fulfilling friendships. I wish you the best of luck. Good friends are precious, but just like we say in dating, there are many fish in the sea. Be social, get out there, and you’ll be surprised how many friendships you attain. I have created some of my best friendships in adulthood.
Female friendships are a form of sisterhood—there’s nothing like it. The more sisters, the better! Remember, it’s okay to take a step back and focus on your own well-being. If you find yourself struggling with this situation, consider seeking professional help. Your mental health is important.
Love, Mindie xo

GREAT BITES
OCTOBER IS DELICIOUS IN EVERY WAY
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Harvest season has arrived! For those crazy, pumpkin-everything obsessed nut cases, this season is their jam! For everyone else, the taste and smell of apple pie, cinnamon toast, maple syrup and more bring back those precious memories of childhood meals and adventures. Yes, October is a delicious month that has something for everyone across the spectrum. Whether it’s our children stalking the hallways of apartment buildings for those little morsels of candy, or adults bobbing for apples at a party, this month is not only flavorful, it is fun!
So let me first tackle the 800-pound gorilla in the room; everyone’s least favorite obsession comes to the forefront, pumpkin season! Granted, my personal disdain for the orange fruit (no, pumpkin is not a vegetable) and the ridiculousness around pumpkin spice during this time of year is my own problem. But you do have to admit that people are too obsessed with pumpkin everything come harvest. Which is even better for our state given how many farms there are for pumpkin picking!
Given how many recipes there are out there for pumpkin-everything, I wanted to take you on a different flavor journey this month. A throwback, if you will, to the days when maple syrup ruled the Harvest! Remember, it was only a decade ago that Chicken & Waffles (with maple syrup) was the trend craze!
SEAN-PATRICK’S MAPLE GLAZED CHOOK
Ingredient:
• 1 teaspoon paprika (for a smokier taste, use smoked paprika)
• 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
• 1 tablespoon brown sugar
• 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cumin
• 1 teaspoon fresh coarse ground black pepper
• 1 - 1 1⁄4 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into 1-inch pieces
• 2 1/2 tablespoons maple syrup
• 1 tablespoon butter (though maple butter would be better for this recipe)
• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
Preparation:
Combine the paprika, salt, ground cinnamon, brown sugar, cumin and pepper in a bowl or bag.
Add chicken pieces and coat evenly. In a skillet over medium heat, cook chicken pieces for about 10 minutes until thoroughly done. Set aside chicken after done and keep warm.
Lower heat to low, add maple syrup, butter and Dijon mustard. Combine well and add chicken pieces to coat evenly. Should be served with roasted potatoes.
WHOLE FOODS MARKET DAILY SHOP
Whole Foods’ new smaller format stores for urban markets like New York are starting to open. And from what I can see, they look amazing! They’re called Whole Foods Market Daily Shop. According to a recent press release from Whole Foods, “Whole Foods Market Daily Shop will provide a convenient option for grab-and-go meals and snacks, weekly essentials, and a quick, easy destination to pick up ingredients to complete a meal—with all items meeting the company’s rigorous quality standards. The innovative, smaller-format stores will range between 7,000 and 14,000 square feet, or about a quarter to half the footprint of an average 40,000-square-foot store.”
The first is located on the Upper East Side at 1175 Third Avenue and opened on September 18. The next one is scheduled to open in StuyTown at 409 East 14th Street in the space formerly occupied by Associated Supermarket.
What used to be referred to as “Whole Paycheck” (for when Whole Foods’ prices were out of the stratosphere before Amazon acquired them), Whole Foods seems to be appealing to the masses, at least in New York, through these smaller format stores with more daily offerings for convenience. Though it is important to note that I would expect these new stores to have a negative affect on local delis and bodegas that serve sandwiches and the like. Personally, I cannot wait to try it! Bon Appetit!
Every single day in Metropolis (I never refer to New York as Gotham, only Metropolis as my nod to the best superhero in history, Superman), guests at restaurants, bars and lounges across the city are given a menu of cocktails to choose from. In the spirits trade, these are called “Feature Cocktail Menu Placements.” They are created either by mixologists (bartenders trained in the art of the cocktail) that work for a spirits brand, or by those that work for the “account” (bar, restaurant, lounge, or club) where the cocktail is featured. To our knowledge, not a single publication has ever highlighted these special concoctions with any regularity, so look for our new Spirits of the City column starting next month! In the meantime, here are three feature cocktail menu drinks we thought were apropos for October:

CHECK-IN TO DINE OUT
SAVORING CULINARY MAGIC AT THE KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL
By Darren Paltrowitz
An iconic destination at 6 Times Square at the corner of 42nd Street and Broadway, is the Beaux Arts-designed Knickerbocker Hotel built in 1906 by visionary real estate mogul John Jacob Astor IV. Among the first buildings to occupy Times Square (formerly Longacre Square), Astor had reportedly discovered in 1901 that the original Knickerbocker Hotel location—the St. Cloud Hotel—would align with New York City’s then-planned subway system, allowing access to the new railroad from the hotel basement. In fact, the original entrance to The Knickerbocker subway entrance can still be found tucked away on the end of the platform of Track 1 on the Shuttle (S) between Grand Central and Times Square.
Within months of its opening in 1906, Times Square had become the center of life in New York City and remains home to the worldfamous New Year’s Eve Times Square Ball Drop. The namesake of the Knickerbocker dates back even further, as a surname shared by some Dutch-descended New Yorkers. Ultimately, the name “Knickerbocker” evolved to become the nickname for all New Yorkers, beyond serving as a moniker for a literary magazine, a beer brand, a bridge, an early baseball team, and an NBA mainstay (the New York Knicks) alike.
Originally an artist-friendly establishment, F. Scott Fitzgerald is said to have written Mr. Icky in his Knickerbocker room. And if rumors serve correctly, The Knickerbocker Hotel was the site of the invention of the dry martini. Today, the hotel exudes an elegant, historic charm that captivates guests from entering its doors. The opulent lobby, adorned with marble floors and soaring ceilings, sets the tone for an unforgettable stay. Luxurious guest rooms blend modern comforts with vintage-inspired decor, offering a serene respite from the bustling city outside.
The Knickerbocker is also home to Jake’s Café and Charlie Palmer Steak IV. This acclaimed restaurant showcases Chef Palmer’s innovative American cuisine, pairing seasonal ingredients with creative flavor profiles. The sleek, modern atmosphere complements the inventive menu, creating an unforgettable gastronomic journey for discerning palates.

UPPER EAST SIDE WELCOMES CHERISHED CUISINE
By Anne Raso
Do you crave Southern Italian food with an upscale flare but also want generous portions? Do you fantasize about the perfect red sauce, or an artichoke stuffed with breadcrumbs and melted cheese in a buttery garlic sauce? What about a dish of extralarge shrimp in a golden wine sauce? We know a place with all the classics and a few unique Italian dishes of their own invention.
In the heart of the East 80s is L’incontro By Rocco—a super authentic storefront eatery with meticulous service so meticulous that you’ll swear that the wait staff have eyes behind their heads. (If you drop a fork, leave your iPhone behind, or appear to require more olive oil to dip your homemade bread, a member of the waitstaff will remedy the situation in 30 seconds or less without you saying a word!) Portions are enough for two in most cases and sometimes even three!
MAKING THE MOVE
Owner/executive chef Rocco Sacramone has a traditional background. He was inspired by his mother’s kitchen talents enough to “go pr.” His restaurants got bigger and better each time. He tells NYL, “My general background as a chef is being self-taught and being taught by my mother. From there, I started a pizzeria and then opened a restaurant. My success is measured by seeing customers walk out of my restaurants with smiles.”
For the past 25 years, Sacramone operated Trattoria L’incontro in Astoria, a favorite of dignitaries and celebrities, and rated an astonishing 28 in the Zagat Guide. He was initially planning on opening L’Incontro By Rocco as a second eatery. However, thanks to the rent for the Astoria restaurant being raised this past spring, the decision was made to operate on the Upper East Side.
Trattoria L’incontro’s last night on May 26th had regular guests crying on their plates of homemade pasta, but many have since bitten the bullet and decided to make the trek to the new location. As a result, L’Incontro By Rocco is filled to the gills by 6:30 every night, with more than forty people waiting for a table in the bar area. The fact that some people drive from Queens and pay $50 for local parking is also a testament to Sacramone’s special cooking skills!
PASTA WITH A TWIST
Unsurprisingly, the house-made pasta is one of the stellar highlights of the L’incontro menu. Scroll down their Instagram account, and you will see a post featuring a new pasta shape nearly every day. One of the trademark pasta is known as “Sailboats”—these resemble Japanese gyoza but are half the size. NYL asked Sacramone the “backstory” of their origins. He revealed, “The story behind the Sailboat is that we use a cooking technique of the pasta dough being folded once. Folding the dough twice for the tortellini pasta creates another extra layer of pasta to cook. All our pasta is homemade on the restaurant premises. We create many specials; our favorites are the Tagliarini with Aqua Pomodoro, Seafood Bolognese, and Carabella Tortellini. They are all popular!”
The secret of L’incontro’s success is also in its sauce. Says the chef/owner, “The restaurant serves Italian cuisine with a modern twist on traditional dishes, but the Pomodoro sauce has an extra special twist—we use the ‘tomato water’ from slow-cooked Campari tomatoes rather than a thicker tomato base.”
A TANTALIZING ATMOSPHERE
When we visited L’incontro, we were not only impressed by the huge all-age crowd so early in the evening but also by the sophisticated and sexy atmosphere, which includes semi-dim lighting and chandeliers shaped like bunches of bubbles. We wanted to try various items and even test dishes that weren’t officially designated as Southern Italian, even if they had Italian names. One such dish was Insalata D’Aragosta, which is a diced lobster mix with frisee, cherry tomatoes, red onions, chive with olive oil, lemon mosto, and mango puree. This dish contains huge lobster chunks, and the citrusy dressing is perfectly refreshing.
We also shared the incredible Eggplant Rollatini appetizer, a classic recipe made with spinach and mozzarella, cooked with homemade tomato sauce. The eggplant was so warm and tender that no knife was needed, and the sauce had a rich flavor without being sweet.
We kept our pasta choice simple just to be able to more easily “taste test” the quality, and we were blown away by the Bucatini Cacio Pepe—this spaghetti-like pasta is topped with cracked black pepper and a blend of fresh pecorino and Romano cheese. We got full fast, but we were oohing and aahing with every bite!
We then shared the super popular Chicken Parmigiana, which is ultra unique because it has much less breading than the traditional recipe and is super tender due to a lot of pounding; the classy presentation included an attached large bone and just the perfect amount of fresh mozzarella and classic red sauce.
Next up was the restaurant’s famous fish dish, Filetto di Branzino. This dish features fish grilled with zucchini, fennel, mint, and tomatoes. Again, this is a healthy choice that is full of flavor.
DESIRABLE DESSERTS
Several classic Italian desserts are offered at L’incontro and we shared both the Ricotta Cheesecake and Napoleon—the cheesecake was surprisingly light and fresh tasting (not anything like dense New York Cheesecake), and the Napoleon had super flakey buttery pastry layers with a vanilla cream typical of a highend French patisserie.
What’s next at this popular eatery? Sacramone reveals, “New items that we will introduce in the fall are stews, venison, and Ossobucco Our dishes will also incorporate chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, and truffles.”
We will return to L’Incontro! The warm atmosphere, significant portions, fantastic quality (including prime meats and fish just flown in), and friendly chef who rounds to customers’ tables make this new eatery a winner!

MENDOZA’S MALBECS
THE PERFECT WINE FOR FALL
By Jenny Peters
There’s been an ongoing phenomenon in Argentina’s Mendoza province, where winemakers produce beautifully balanced Malbec wines. These wines have begun to take their place as some of the best on the planet. Perhaps you’ve tried Mendoza Malbec already. It is having a distinct moment, gaining traction worldwide for its deep, rich red flavor profile characterized by dark berry flavors and elegant tannins.
Fall is a perfect time to dive into Argentinean Malbec for a taste (or two), especially with a pairing combining the heartier foods the season brings with these flavorful, bold wines. Think fondues, thick beef stews, sweet potato chili, or spicy pumpkin soup; you’ll find these wines stand up to the task without overpowering the dishes.
We recently visited the Mendoza Valley and discovered some of the region’s best places to produce fine Malbecs. Here are some of our favorites.
Bodega Catena Zapata Making wine since 1902, Bodega Catena Zapata is a family-run winery that is acknowledged as one of the top producers in Mendoza. For an entry-level introduction, try Catena Malbec 2021, a dark purple blend of grapes from four vineyards with distinct black cherry nuances melded with vanilla and black pepper. Aged in oak for 12 months, it has a rounded mouthfeel and a soft but sturdy tannic finish. If you’re ready to try some of Mendoza’s best Malbec, invest in a bottle of Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 202. This flagship 100% Malbec wine has it all, sourced from old vines from two exceptional vineyards, one 90 years old and one 20 years old, then melded into a spectacularly balanced finished product. With top scores from the world’s best-known wine critics, this spicy, dense Malbec with notes of cherry and violets will delight your palate.
Priore One of the newer Malbec producers is Pelleriti Priore, the partnership between two Mendoza natives: famed Argentinean winemaker Marcelo Pelleriti and wine executive Miguel Priore. Together, they craft top-notch Malbecs that express the region’s exemplary terroir. Try the Pelleriti Priore Signature Malbec and discover a densely flavorful meld of blackberries and cherries with a luscious mouthfeel resulting from 12 months in oak barrels. That could become your go-to red wine, but if you can find the Marcelo Pelleriti Grand Cuvee or the Marcelo Pelleriti Blend of Terroir (which may be difficult), take the financial plunge and discover those incredible wines.
Pascual Toso Pascual Toso is another of Mendoza’s venerable wineries. Established in 1890, it is still producing fine Malbecs expressive of its Barrancas location in the valley. Their entry-level Pascual Toso Estate Malbec 2022 is marked by a plummy red fruit flavor and a bright tannic structure. It is an easy-drinking and reasonably priced wine. For a richer taste, discover the Pascual Toso Alta Malbec 2020, made from 60-year-old vines and aged for 18 months in French oak. This wine is lovely and spicy, with hints of roses and a beautiful structure. Pascual Toso makes a range of Malbecs; all are worth a taste to find your favorite.

PASTA, PASSION & PEDIGREE
MARC FORGIONE’S TRATTORIA ONE FIFTH
By Anne Raso
Trattoria One Fifth has become a downtown “foodies’ favorite” in a brief time. Situated in the lobby of a stunning 1920s Art Deco apartment building (that once housed Anthony Bourdain’s famous Clementine), the romantic lighting, retro look, and spaciousness will immediately make you feel at home and like a sophisticated New Yorker at the same time.
Owner/Executive Chef Marc Forgione appreciates this elegant space as much as his guests. He reveals via an exclusive interview with New York Lifestyles, “One Fifth Avenue has been home to restaurants for nearly one hundred years, and we wanted to honor the history of the building by combining classic Art Deco design elements with rustic Italian heritage antiques. We restored the original terrazzo floors from the 1970s and the historic revolving door, and we use a 200-yearold butcher block as our host stand. A lot of our art honors the building’s famous residents, past events, neighborhood, and artifacts uncovered by the building’s owners.”
AN ICONIC SPACE
Forgione also believes that iconic restaurant spaces with rich histories remain restaurants and not become banks or other businesses. “I love the location on the corner of 5th Avenue and 8th Street because of its history and proximity to my favorite farmer’s market. With Trattoria One Fifth, we’re celebrating the history of one of the former restaurants from the 1970s. Our Italian menu is inspired by the seasons and local ingredients.”
The menu may feature many Southern Italian classics, but they are prepared a little differently than the standard recipes thanks to Forgione’s constant quest to improve upon what are considered long-loved classics from grandma’s kitchen. He makes a point of buying seasonal ingredients from local purveyors to ensure ultra-freshness, which goes is a key component of a resto created by a Michelin-starred chef.
NEW SEASON, NEW INGREDIENTS
What are the chef’s favorites at Trattoria One Fifth? The friendly Forgione responds, “I love when new ingredients come back in season so we can switch things up, especially with our pasta and pizza. All our pasta is made fresh in-house, including a gluten-free option. I especially love stuffed pasta like Cappelletti with Prosciutto and Peas or Duck Agnolotti Our gelato is also incredibly popular, and flavors change with the season; I am currently loving strawberries! One of my favorite fall dishes is the Squacio e Pepe, inspired by Cacio e Pepe (but made with honey nut squash and Pecorino). Another one is the Brussels Sprouts Pizza with Goat Cheese and Speck ”
You will find the food as appealing as the décor and when you walk in, you will be greeted by super warm hosts behind the butcher block front desk. You probably already know that he was a winner on The Last Top Chef and has several ultra-popular eateries under his belt, including Tribeca’s Michelin-starred Restaurant Marc Forgione. The wildly praised Khe-Yo--which serves the very hard-to-get Laotian cuisine; it’s a two-minute walk away. He also has restaurants in Atlantic City, including the elegant and popular 12-year-old steakhouse American Cut at The Revel, which is a tribute to his legendary father, Larry Forgione.
PIZZA PERFECTION
When we visited Trattoria One Fifth, we hit the ground running. We were floored when we started with the healthy Tuna Crudo (with olives, celery, and sea beans) and Sourdough Pillow (a puffy bread made with ricotta). We then tried the Mushroom Pizza with Taleggio and Hazelnut and were amazed at the perfect golden crust and overall rich flavors.
Forgione gives NYL the secret to his perfect pizza: “I spent years testing different methods and recipes to create the pizza dough at Trattoria One Fifth, which I call a ‘NewYorkPolitan’ pie. It has the same high-quality ingredients and attention to detail as Neapolitan style, but with no flop; instead, it has the structure and crispiness of a classic NYC slice. We have some classics that are always on the menu and some that change based on what’s in season at the Union Square Greenmarket.”
We shared the ultra-creamy and hot Cacio E Pepe. Then we moved on to spectacular main courses—Branzino with Husk Cherries and Root Vegetables, and Snowdance Farm’s Chicken Under A Brick with Caper Brown Butter and Balsamic Radicchio. The presentations were stunning, but the tastes were “next level”! You have not had juicy chicken until you’ve tried the slowly cooked Chicken Under A Brick—and the Branzino tasted like it was caught that day. The Asparagus with Parmigiana and Farm Egg along with Glazed Carrots with Pistachio are highly compatible sides, and portions are generous enough to share.
SWEET SENSATIONS
Dessert choices are simple but high quality; the homemade gelato created by pastry chef Jamie Callao is the runaway favorite. It’s made in-house daily, and flavors range from classics like Chocolate and Vanilla to tasty EVOO and Sweet Corn. The ice cream sodas are incredible. The Creamsicle Ice Cream Soda (which we ordered) is made with vanilla gelato and a thick, non-carbonated ginger soda called Baladin, which tastes like an after-dinner liqueur.
Come to Trattoria One Fifth and prepare to have it become your West Village go-to where you can count on great Italian dishes for everyone in your party, whether they’re kids looking for the world’s best meatballs or older food snobs who will be impressed by the Smoked Linguine with Manila Clams and Gremolata! An extraspecial treat is the restaurant’s Pig Dinner. Whole grilled pigs are available if you give the restaurant four days’ notice and have a party of six or more (now that is well worth returning for)! For

ON THE SMALL SCREEN

ORIGINS/SPINOFFS/RETURNS TO TV
BEFORE
Apple TV+
Billy Crystal returns to the small screen after almost ten years in this limited dramatic series as both star and producer. His role as a child psychologist who loses his wife to suicide is an intense one, as he tries to cope with what happened to her while attempting to unravel a young boy’s emotional distress. Rosie Perez, Hope Davis, and Judith Light round out the cast.
HAPPY’S PLACE
NBC
Reba McEntire returns to the weekly network sitcom world in this story revolving around a woman who inherits her dad’s restaurant, only to discover she’s got a partner – the sister she never knew she had. Melissa Peterman costars as her “new” sibling in this food-centric series that isn’t likely to evoke The Bear. Hopefully, this one will have more laughs, as that’s what Reba does best as an actress.
CBS
Spinoff series are nothing new on the small screen, but a spinoff of a spinoff is something of an anomaly (but not unheard of). This new show starring Emily Osment and Montana Jordan springs from the ever-fertile mind of Chuck Lorre, who first created The Big Bang Theory, then followed that with Young Sheldon, and now George & Mandy’s First Marriage. This sitcom follows Sheldon’s older brother, who marries at 17 and has a child – fans of all these shows will know that Jerry O’Connell played the older version of Georgie in Big Bang
NCIS: ORIGINS
CBS
Proving that viewers just cannot get enough of crimes involving the U.S. Navy, this series marks the fifth spinoff of the longand-still running NCIS. After 20 years on the air, it’s still got the umph to keep fans watching, this time with the origin story of Jethro Gibbs, beginning in 1991. Mark Harmon (who has retired from that role in the original show, but still produces it) is the narrator, while Austin Stowell stars as young Gibbs, just beginning his naval career.
POPPA’S HOUSE
CBS
It’s a family affair on the new sitcom Poppa’s House, as Damon Wayans and his son Damon Wayans Jr. join forces to bring laughs to Monday night prime time. Damon the Elder plays a New York City talk-show host living with his grown son, which sounds a bit like a Black version of Frasier. Hopefully the Wayans comedy magic that’s been on display since In Living Color made the whole family household names back in 1990 will make this one just as funny in its own unique way.

PLAYING WITH THE BEST: One Man’s Journey Through The Golden Age Of Sports
By Lenny Wagner Brookline Books
A biography of Walter French, the only man who played for both a World Series winner and NFL Championship team.
Before Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders, there were only nineteen men, throughout history, who played in the Major Leagues of baseball and in the National Football League, in the same season.
One man from that group, Walter E. French, can lay claim to having played for a World Series winner and an NFL Championship team. In 1925, he starred for the Pottsville (PA) Maroons in their win over the Chicago Cardinals, in what was believed to be the NFL championship game, only to see the title stripped by a league office decision, a controversial move still being argued about today. Then in 1929, he was on the Philadelphia Athletics when they beat the Chicago Cubs in five games to win the World Series.
French was born in Moorestown, New Jersey in 1899 and he just might have been the best, but least known, all-around athlete to emerge from the decade of the 1920s, commonly referred to as the “Golden Age of Sports.” One analyst ranked him as the fastest man in football at the time, even placing him ahead of Red Grange. Although his exploits have dropped from the consciousness of all but the most ardent of sports fans in the last one hundred years, in his day, he was constantly in the news.
He played with and against the biggest stars the decade of the 1920s had to offer, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Walter Johnson, Ty Cobb, and twenty-seven other ballplayers who would eventually wind up in the Baseball Hall of Fame. In football, he went up against the likes of Notre Dame’s George Gipp, the “Four Horsemen,” Curly Lambeau, Geoge Halas, Ira “Buck” Rogers and many more. The top sports writers of his day made regular mention of him in their columns. Other well-known figures from the period such as Paul Robeson, Knute Rockne, Connie Mack, and General Douglas MacArthur are part of his journey as well and make appearances in this book.

THE COLONY CLUB
By Shelley Noble William Morrow Paperbacks
From New York Times bestselling author Shelley Noble comes a thrilling historical novel about the inception of the Colony Club, the first women’s club of its kind, set against the dazzling backdrop of Gilded Age New York.
When young Gilded Age society matron Daisy Harriman is refused a room at the Waldorf because they don’t cater to unaccompanied females, she takes matters into her own hands. She establishes the Colony Club, the first women’s club in Manhattan, where visiting women can stay overnight and dine with their friends; where they can discuss innovative ideas, take on social issues, and make their voices heard. She hires the most sought-after architect in New York, Stanford White, to design the clubhouse.
As “the best dressed actress on the Rialto” Elsie de Wolfe has an eye for décor, but her career is stagnating. So, when White asks her to design the clubhouse interiors, she jumps at the chance and the opportunity to add a woman’s touch. He promises to send her an assistant, a young woman he’s hired as a drafter.
Raised in the Lower East Side tenements, Nora Bromely is determined to become an architect despite hostility and sabotage from her male colleagues. She is disappointed and angry when White “foists” her off on this new women’s club project. But when White is murdered and the ensuing Trial of the Century discloses the architect’s scandalous personal life, fearful backers begin to withdraw their support. It’s questionable whether the club will survive long enough to open.
Daisy, Elsie, and Nora have nothing in common but their determination to carry on. But to do so, they must overcome not only society’s mores but their own prejudices about women, wealth, and each other. Together they strive to transform Daisy’s dream of the Colony Club into a reality, a place that will nurture social justice and ensure the work of the women who earned the nickname “Mink Brigade” far into the future.

BEST FRIENDS NETWORK
WHY THEY ARE SO IMPORTANT
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
In 2016 Best Friends Animal Society’s CEO, Julie Castle, set a goal for our country to achieve “No-Kill” status by 2025. It was a watershed moment in the rescue and advocacy communities. Best Friends literally drew the line in the sand to achieve the dream of every animal advocate and rescuer; a world free of municipal animal shelter euthanizations for space capacity issues. And the country appeared to be on-track to actually achieve this utopian goal. Then the pandemic hit and everything changed.
The term “no-kill” can mean different things to different people, even as straightforward as it may be. In the rescue and advocacy community, “no-kill” has a slightly different definition of 90% of a shelter population being saved. According to Best Friends Animal Society’s website: “No-kill, as a philosophical principle, means saving every dog or cat in a shelter who can be saved. But it’s helpful to have a way to clearly measure lifesaving progress as we move forward together, and that’s where the 90% benchmark comes in. Typically, the number of pets who are suffering from irreparable medical or behavioral issues that compromise their quality of life and prevent them from being rehomed is not more than 10% of all dogs and cats entering shelters. Therefore, we designate shelters that meet the 90% save-rate benchmark as no-kill.” In other words, if 90% or more of animals available for adoption at a shelter are adopted out, that means that facility is classified as a “No-Kill Shelter.”
Before the world shuttered due to COVID-19 mandated lockdowns, the animal rescue and shelter populations were significantly down compared to even just a few years prior. Record adoption rates were being recorded. Most municipal shelters were not euthanizing for space. And rescues across the country were celebrating more adoptions than ever.
Once the pandemic took hold, all of those celebrations became even more riotous. Shelters were virtually empty. Rescues couldn’t find enough animals to adopt out. Why? People did not want to be alone during the COVID lockdowns. It appeared that Best Friends’ goal was within reach. Then the pandemic ended. And the unthinkable happened; many people surrendered, or “returned”, those pets to the facility they came from.
The return rate at municipal shelters skyrocketed compared to the year prior. But make no mistake about it; this surge in returns was a one-time anomaly that has had a lasting effect. And the return rate surge was not as large as the mainstream media would have us believe. Return rates average around seven percent for a typical shelter. At the end of the pandemic, the return rate shot to an average of 17 – 24% dependent on the municipality and how severe their specific lockdowns were.
There are numerous reasons why someone will surrender an animal to a shelter or rescue, but many of those who returned animals to the shelter or rescue they adopted from cited that they didn’t fully understand what they were getting into before adopting. And while that is not so uncommon, the volume of animals returned to shelters was.
During this time, Best Friends Animal Society knew that the pendulum would eventually swing back again given the complexities of the pandemic and getting back society back to normal. Julie Castle and her team had already worked tirelessly for years to build what is called the Best Friends Network. The pandemic only seemed to accelerate the growth of that network. On top of their six Lifesaving Center locations, including their beloved Sanctuary in Utah, the Best Friends Network is made up of thousands of public and private shelters, rescue groups, spay/neuter organizations and other animal welfare groups, all working to save the lives of dogs and cats in communities across the country.
So why does a network like this matter so much? Shelter and rescue networks can help lower euthanization rates and increase adoption rates in ways you could never imagine. Let’s use Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) as an example as to the importance of a group of rescues and shelters banding together to affect positive change. As cited in Mary Beth’s Adoption Crisis story in this edition, ACC had one of the lowest live-release-rates in the country in the late 00’s and early 2010’s. It took dozens of New York tri-state area rescues to truly affect change. They were all part of what is called the New Hope network. New Hope allows rescues and private shelters to “pull” viable animals from ACC’s projected at-risk list (the shelter puts the at-risk list together to alert the network as to what animals are going to be euthanized to make space for more homeless animals).
The term “pull” means that the rescue or organization takes legal responsibility for that animal, removing it from ACC’s custody. ACC is contracted by the New York City Department of Health and Human Services to care for NYC’s animals. Essentially, by contract, ACC must take in any animal that is brought to their doorstep. And if they are at capacity, they are required to euthanize to make space for that new animal. This is where New Hope became the beacon of light ACC so desperately needed at that time. As a new administration began managing ACC, New Hope was pulling dogs and cats for rescues in record numbers. This combined with a new adoption counselor program, as well as the new marketing campaigns and community outreach programs ACC was executing, led them to a 93% live-release-rate.
That very logic is why the Best Friends Network is so integral to the future of animal welfare in this country. Best Friends Network gives access to rescues and shelter partners to resources they would not have on their own, as well as the ability to adopt to a much larger population base. It is no surprise to any of us that Best Friends Animal Society is leading the charge with this all-important endeavor given their brand DNA of lifesaving, let alone their CEO’s very clear passion for saving lives and affecting positive change on a large scale.
You’ve undoubtedly heard the phrase, “It takes a village…” Well, I can tell you that the Best Friends Network is the proverbial “village” that we all know will help stem the tide of surrenders and increase adoptions so we can achieve that utopian goal of a No-Kill Nation that Julie Castle so rightly set eight years ago

Iam normally not one for dressing up my dog, Brioreo. She doesn’t really like getting dressed up either. But my wife Kylie loves to dress Bri up, just like she has with every pet we have had together. And while Kylie doesn’t like dressing pets up on a normal day, she does tend to go a little over the top on holidays. Then there are those pet parents who love to get their furrever one all gussied up on the daily. Okay, to be honest, there are also those who like to dress in matching outfits with their dogs every day! But for Halloween, I will always make an exception in getting our girl trick or treat ready!
Dressing a pet for a special occasion or holiday can be fun. There are many choices out there. Much of it depends on what you, as the pet parent, want. For Halloween, I have seen everything from pop culture references like a dog dressed as R2D2 from Star Wars and a cat dressed as the Wicked Witch from The Wizard of OZ to even politically themed costumes like a dog dressed as President Ronald Reagan to a Dachshund dressed as a hot dog.
SAFETY FIRST
But please remember that there are pitfalls to dressing up your pet. You need to pay extra attention to the parts of the costume that may be loose, frayed or designed as an accessory. Those pieces often end up getting chewed on by your pet, and parts of the costume can come off, ending up in their mouths, or stuck in their throats. So, when you are choosing a costume, please make sure you take into consideration of all aspects of that costume to ensure your furrever one’s safety.
This year’s hottest costume choices, from what we can see this far away from Halloween, seem to be Taylor Swift, a Postal Worker, a Witch, a UPS delivery person and former President Donald Trump. However, in this politically charged and tense climate, we suggest going with something a little more standard or middle of the road. The last thing you want is to end up in a political argument with someone on the street, or even in your building. Therefore, more standard ideas of a ladybug, a witch, a pumpkin, a pirate, or a ghost are probably a better choice, especially when trick or treating in New York City.
SAVVY TIPS
And just a couple of tips to ensure your furrever one has a safe, happy and healthy Halloween night out with you:
• Ensure you have a water bottle and portable/collapsible water bowl to keep your pet hydrated.
• If your children are out with you, make sure that any candy they received during trick or treating is not accessible to your furrever one. Remember that chocolate is deadly to dogs.
• If it is raining, or snowing (it happens every once in a while, on Halloween), make sure you have ample paw wipes and/or booties to keep their paws dry and clean.
• When you get home from your Halloween adventure with your furrever one, make sure to wipe them down with wipes, and to dry their paws. Often children will spill chocolate, or liquids from soda and the like when they are out with their friends (they are kids after all). Your pet has undoubtedly walked through some of this, and you want to be sure that they don’t track it back into your home.
Most of all, remember that Halloween is fun and if you are bringing your furrever one along for trick or treating, you just need to take a couple of extra steps to ensure their safety and well-being.
Have fun!
ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER
CINDY WITTEMAN, DRIVING SINGLE PARENTS INC.
By Pippa Roberts
Cindy Witteman’s journey involves resilience, empowerment, and a deep commitment to helping others. Having grown up in poverty, Cindy understands firsthand the struggles of trying to build a better future. Her early life was marked by hardship, including a difficult marriage in which she experienced domestic abuse. However, instead of allowing these experiences to define her, Cindy used them as fuel to rebuild her life, finding strength and purpose along the way.
This determination led Cindy to found Driving Single Parents Inc., a non-profit organization providing cars to needy single parents. In addition to her non-profit work, Cindy is a TV host, author, and Action Mastery Coach, wearing many hats with grace and discipline. Her show, Little Give TV, highlights inspiring stories of everyday heroes and non-profits, spreading positivity in a world often dominated by negativity.
We sat down with Cindy to learn more.
Tell our readers a bit more about your story. I grew up constantly feeling the weight of not having enough. There were so many times I went without the necessities—things most people don’t even think about—because they just weren’t available to me. I dreamed of a better life, believing that getting married and starting a family young would be my way out of poverty.
But what I found wasn’t freedom. Instead, I found myself in an abusive relationship, trapped in a situation that felt just as suffocating as the poverty I was trying to escape. I had to gather all the strength I had to leave that relationship and rebuild my life from the ground up.
Since then, I’ve made it my mission to focus on living a life that feels fulfilling from the inside out. I’ve learned that real success isn’t about financial security or escaping hardship—it’s about finding peace and purpose, even after the most brutal battles. Now, I’m dedicated to showing people that no matter where you start, you can create a meaningful, joyful, and, indeed, your own life.
You wear many hats, from non-profit founder to TV host. What motivated you to start Driving Single Parents Inc.?
The idea for Driving Single Parents Inc. came from a very personal place. I know firsthand what it’s like to face overwhelming challenges while trying to build a better future for yourself and your family. I wanted to do more than help single parents get by—I wanted to give them something that could change their lives. By giving away cars, we’re not just offering temporary relief; we’re providing the tools for them to drive themselves toward a brighter, more secure future. It’s about empowering them to take control and move forward with confidence.
How do you manage your various roles?
The key to managing all my roles is controlling my time. My main tip is to run my calendar—I don’t let it run me. I’m very intentional about scheduling and carve out time for everything that matters, whether it’s hosting, writing, or running my nonprofit. It’s all about prioritizing what’s important and being disciplined with your time so you can focus entirely on each role when needed.
Your TV show, Little Give TV, focuses on sharing positive and uplifting stories. What inspired the creation of the show? The idea for Little Give TV came about after I committed to overcoming self-sabotage and tackling my fear of public speaking head-on. What better way to do that than by starting a TV show, right? Little Give became the perfect platform for me to highlight everyday people doing extraordinary things for others while also shining a light on non-profits.
Spreading good news can be challenging in a world where unwelcome news often dominates, but we’ve made it work, and now Little Give TV has been sharing positive stories for a year and a half. There are so many powerful stories that it’s hard to pick one that stands out.
Can you share a time when someone did something small for you that may have seemed like just a “little give” on their end but significantly impacted your life?
The variety of answers and the emotions they stir in me and the audience are incredible. Those moments remind me how even small acts of kindness can ripple out and change lives.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an experience you have discussed at length. What is the most rewarding aspect of your work with survivors?
Having lived through the challenges of domestic violence, this issue holds a special place in my heart. The most rewarding part of my work with single parents and survivors is seeing their transformation— watching them reclaim their power and hope. I know firsthand how hard it is to break free from those physical and emotional situations. Seeing someone step toward a better future, whether through our car giveaways or being there to support them on their journey, fills me with such a deep sense of purpose. That’s what makes it all worth it—seeing people realize that they’re not just surviving but capable of thriving.
As an Action Mastery Coach, you help individuals overcome insurmountable obstacles to make noteworthy progress toward their aspirations.
Through Action Mastery Coaching, my main goal is to help people break free from emotional overwhelm and start taking action, one small step at a time. I often ask, “Are you willing to see it differently?” That question stirs something within them—it challenges their perspective and opens the door to real change. I’ve seen this simple shift in mindset make an enormous difference, empowering them to move forward with clarity and purpose.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs and authors? Believe in yourself—and do it!

MY NEW YORK STORY
RABBI REBECCA
KEREN-JABLONSKI:
FAITH, FEMINISM & THE FUTURE
By AP Connolly
In such a fast-paced world full of tech and super-sized day planners, New Yorkers can easily get lost in the grind and lose touch with their connection to spirituality, nature and being present.
To help in this quest, Rabbi Rebecca Keren-Jablonski, one of New York’s most sought-after female rabbis shares the key to keeping religion relevant in an on-demand world in her tell-all guide Confessions of a Female Rabbi.
We sat down with her and got the 411 on some of her biggest confessions and sentiments from behind the bimah
What are some of the biggest challenges we face when it comes to religion, spirituality and contemporary living?
I have found that the biggest challenge that faces modern Americans is making time and space for religious practice. Religious institutions can sometimes feel old-fashioned, impersonal, and less relevant to the daily needs of an individual or family. Religious adherence and stringency are on the decline; only 9% of American Jews consider themselves to be Orthodox, strictly practicing the religious law. Because of this, over the last several decades, membership and attendance at spiritual centers have decreased dramatically. This also means that to survive, many neighborhood churches and synagogues have to sell their buildings and consolidate or merge their congregations; this result is larger mega-institutions that are less personal and less likely to maintain active members.
As a woman who is also a religious leader, what are some of the biggest obstacles you faced and overcame that others can learn from?
As a woman in a position of leadership within religion, I always come across traditional people who devalue and outright deny my ability to hold my position. Orthodox Judaism does not allow for female clergy members, especially those who sing in public and facilitate egalitarian practice and participation from women and girls.
If you had to pick just one of your many confessions from your book which is most impactful to know, what would it be?
The most relevant confession is the confession that opens the book: “I think about Jewish survival more than ever.” I’ve dedicated my career to practical religious facilitation but beyond the worry about the irrelevance of Jewish practice, I confess to fears about our people’s survival given the worldwide surge of Jew-hatred that the Israel-Hamas war has unearthed. Jews face the dual existential threat of antisemitism in the diaspora and war in a homeland. In every generation, the enemies of the Jewish people are genocidal; they twist logic and facts to inspire acts of violence against Jewish people. Jewish people are more secular and dispersed than ever; without unification and efforts to strengthen from within, our survival is at risk.
In a 2021 report, the Pew Center for Research found that 3 in 10 Americans report being of no-religion. In the same year, a Pew study on Judaism in America found that to US Jews, Jewish identity is more than just about religious practice. Most Jews do not belong to a faith-based institution or house of worship, and more than half do not belong to any one denomination. Thankfully, Jewish practice and identity have a place for those who feel Jewish because of their ancestry, culture or practice regardless of belief. I include a chapter where a family chose to present the religion, its practices, and belief systems to their children, even though the parents were atheists. I also have expressed in other writing that Zionism, the belief that Jews have a right to self-determination in their ancestral homeland, is another expression of Judaism that has grown in popularity due to the 2023 Israel-Hamas war.
What are your feelings as we recall the sad anniversary date of October 7th. What can we learn as a people from the circumstances?
The Hebrew calendar does not match up with the secular calendar year to year; the attacks of October 7, 2023, occurred on the holiday of Sukkot/ Simhat Torah, a notable season of joy; however, the first anniversary will take place during the Jewish Ten Days of Repentance. Known as the Days of Awe, the date will fall during a somber time of reflection and return for Jewish people between our New Year and the Day of Atonement. During this time, we are already looking at the past year and trying to improve upon our communal and personal failings. This includes but is not limited to what could have been done better to protect innocent civilians on both sides of the conflict. Regardless of one’s political leanings, the day itself must be upheld for memorial and prayer in honor of the many victims and their families.
Can you share some of the biggest takeaways you’ve witnessed and participated in pertaining to marriage and divorce?
As I’ve facilitated weddings and advised partners during divorce, a practice I stress to couples is to make sure they have articulated and created a shared vision for growth. With time, couples face new circumstances and challenges. Financial changes, children, world events and health can all affect the day-to-day of either partner. From the start of commitment, a couple must be honest from the outset and make an oath and roadmap for weathering each type of storm. They should look to how they problem-solve and navigate challenges. Change is guaranteed for the future–the key is that a couple is practically interested in evolving as a couple. If not, they will grow apart and separate.
What is your hope people will learn from reading your book? I hope that people are inspired to mark life’s moments within a religious context. I hope that those who have been questioning the relevance of religion in their lives will find meaning in the case studies I explore. I hope people don’t settle for boring and passive religious experiences. We must do all we can to infuse new vigor into Jewish life and I hope that my book helps.

Rivero, who has worked with Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessica Simpson, and Barbara Corcoran, is known for his ingenuity, artistry, and steadfast commitment to improving natural beauty.
Rivero’s career took off after he relocated to the world’s fashion capital, New York City. In the crowded and competitive beauty market, his talent rapidly drew the attention of industry insiders. His ability to create immaculate, high definition looks made him popular with photographers and fashion designers. Rivero’s work has appeared in leading fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, confirming his status as a master of his trade.
One of Rivero’s distinguishing characteristics is his versatility. Whether working on a highfashion issue, a celebrity red carpet-event, or bridal photography, he tailors his technique to each client’s specific requirements.
Tomy Rivero’s development into a worldrenowned makeup artist demonstrates his talent, dedication, and enthusiasm. Rivero’s work is still praised for its inventiveness, elegance, and transformational force, cementing his status as a makeup artistry icon.
Tell us a little about your early life and what sparked your interest in makeup artistry. I was born in the Dominican Republic; I grew up seeing my mother getting ready to go to work at a bank. It was required that she look a certain way. So, I felt like I was watching my own fashion show every morning. The minute I saw the power of transformation, I was hooked and never looked back.
How did your education shape your career?
Education and training gave me the confidence to show up or submit for big jobs even when I still didn’t have an extensive resume. It is because of all my training under these prestigious academies. Producers, directors, and fashion designers also gave me a chance when I was still very new.
You have a distinctive makeup style. How would you describe it?
Corrective-natural makeup. While I love creating a “look,” my work thrives on creating balance on the face. My gift is to bring out your best natural self through makeup. On older clients, I’m able to create the illusion of a facelift with just paint and powder, correcting loss of volume and softening the look of the aging process. Natural beauty is my Sweet Spot!
What are some of your favorite techniques or products?
I love working on a very wet face. It never shocks the model or actress but always stuns other makeup artists. I just like the way it binds everything together. It’s taken me years to perfect my wet technique.
What is your philosophy when it comes to makeup and beauty?
Beauty is the key to getting anything you want out of your life, personal or professional. I’m not talking about physical beauty but the discipline you must have for the rest of your life to do your best to display your best to the world. This action alone will open more doors and bring you more of what you want.
How do you feel your work has influenced the makeup industry?
There is a very distinct line in the industry between people who do “fashion” makeup and “film” makeup. I think I have been a great example of how you can do both well and be successful doing both as long as you have a good system in place.
You’ve achieved so much. Are there any other plans?
My vision is to create a Beauty Club, a haven where you can address all your beauty needs under one roof, guided by the best in the business. It’s a concept that draws inspiration from the legendary Spas of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and one that I’m excited to bring to life.
Do you have any final words of advice for aspiring makeup artists?
Learn from your clients; don’t just provide a service. As you rise, you get to be in rooms with brilliant people who have done extraordinary things. Listen and ask questions. This is your education.

GHOSTS OF THE BIG APPLE
EXPLORING NYCS FAVORITE HAUNTED LOCALES
By Patricia Canole
New York City, with its rich history spanning over four centuries, is not only a hub of culture and commerce but also a hotbed of paranormal activity. From centuries-old buildings to modern-day landmarks, the city that never sleeps is also home to restless spirits that continue to captivate the imagination of residents and visitors alike.
From colonial-era mansions to iconic landmarks, the spirits of New York’s past continue to make their presence known, reminding us that in this city of endless possibilities, the line between the living and the dead may be thinner than we think.
HAUNTED HOUSES
The Merchant’s House Museum Located in the East Village, the Merchant’s House Museum is considered one of the most haunted places in Manhattan. Built in 1832, this preserved 19th-century home is said to be haunted by the Tredwell family, who lived there for nearly 100 years. Visitors and staff have reported seeing apparitions, hearing unexplained Gertrude Tredwell, the last family member to live in the home, is believed to be the most active spirit, often seen in her favorite rocking chair or wandering the hallways.
The Morris-Jumel Mansion Standing as Manhattan’s oldest house, the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights has a long history of supernatural occurrences. Built in 1765, it served as George Washington’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War. The mansion’s most famous ghost is said to be that of Eliza Jumel, the former mistress of the house. Staff and visitors have reported seeing her apparition in a purple dress, hearing strange noises, and witnessing objects move on their own. The mansion’s eerie atmosphere has made it a popular destination for ghost hunters and history buffs alike.
The House of Death Despite its quaint Greek Revival facade, 14 West 10th Street in Greenwich Village has earned the ominous nickname “The House of Death.” This brownstone is rumored to be haunted by 22 ghosts, including that of Mark Twain, who lived there briefly in 1900. Over the years, residents have reported numerous paranormal experiences, from apparitions to unexplained sounds and sensations.
The Dakota The iconic Upper West Side apartment building, famous as the home of John Lennon and the location of his tragic assassination, is also known for its supernatural residents. Built in the 1880s, The Dakota has been the site of numerous ghostly sightings over the years. Residents and staff have reported seeing the ghost of a young girl, a grown man dressed in 19thcentury clothing, and even the spirit of John Lennon himself.
HAUNTED THEATER
The Belasco Theatre This midtown landmark is not only notable for the talent it draws, but for the ghosts that never leave. Allegedly, owner David Belasco once lived in an apartment above the theater with his right-hand lady (a.k.a. the Blue Lady). Belasco passed away in 1931, but his spirit (including the Blue Lady’s) remains. Both can be seen onstage during performances, sitting in the audience and traveling in the elevator.
HAUNTED CHURCHES
St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery This East Village church, the second-oldest in Manhattan, is said to be haunted by the ghost of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Director-General of New Netherland. Stuyvesant, whose remains are interred in a vault beneath the church, has been seen limping through the churchyard (he famously had a wooden leg) and heard peg-legging up and down the aisles during services.
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine This massive Gothic Revival cathedral in Morningside Heights is not only an architectural marvel but also a hotbed of paranormal activity. Visitors and staff have reported seeing shadowy figures moving through the vast nave, hearing unexplained choral music when the cathedral is empty, and feeling sudden cold spots throughout the building.
St. Paul’s Chapel As the oldest surviving church building in Manhattan, St. Paul’s Chapel has witnessed centuries of New York history. During the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the chapel served as a rest and relief station for recovery workers. Since then, there have been reports of ghostly Revolutionary War-era soldiers seen in and around the chapel’s graveyard. Some visitors have also claimed to feel a comforting presence inside the church, attributed to the spirits of those who perished in the nearby World Trade Center attacks.
HAUNTED RESTAURANTS & BARS
One by Land, Two if by Sea Housed in a 1767 carriage house in Greenwich Village, this romantic restaurant is said to be haunted by none other than Aaron Burr and his daughter Theodosia. Staff and diners have reported seeing apparitions, feeling ghostly touches, and witnessing objects move on their own. The restaurant’s long history and connection to one of America’s most infamous political figures contribute to its eerie atmosphere.
Ear Inn This SoHo establishment, housed in a building dating back to 1817, is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a sailor named Mickey. Known for his mischievous antics, Mickey is said to play pranks on female patrons and staff, turn lights on and off, and move objects around the bar. The Ear Inn’s long history and preservation of its original structure make it a prime location for paranormal activity.
White Horse Tavern In addition to haunting the Hotel Chelsea the ghost of Dylan Thomas gets around and is also known to hang out at the White House Tavern, where the legendary Welsh poet allegedly drank 18 straight whiskies on the night of his death at the age of 39 in 1953. Thomas has been witnessed lounging around his favorite table and even stealing shots from the bar on occasion. A notable “bar for writers,” it was established in 1880 and has been recognized by the Academy of American Poets.
THE FINAL WORD
THE MISADVENTURES OF GENX IN 1990’S
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Growing up in Manhattan in the 80’s and early 90’s was not the simplest thing in the world. As part of Generation X, or as we have been famously referred to as the “Why Bother Generation”, taking on the Big Apple as a kid and teenager was an adventure. Granted it was an adventure steeped in urban myth; crime and grime; and the rules of the street overrode everything. In other words, what you saw in the movies was actually true of New York in the 1980’s and 1990’s. And that was when New York was actually the stuff legend was made of. Today? Not even close.
Yes, I had a misspent youth. No, it was not my parents’ fault (as Millennials and GenZ typically blame the parental units for their self-inflicted woes). In fact, I purposefully went out of my way to experience everything that was on the “wrong side of the tracks,” so to speak. As an example, I started hanging out at nightclubs long before I was even 15.
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
At that time, I was also a regular fixture at many an Irish pub on Manhattan’s Upper East and Upper West sides. Then again, with a first name like Sean-Patrick, the latter should come as no surprise. Back then, the police were more concerned with actual crime and grime while venue owners were more concerned with revenue and maintaining their street credentials. Those underage kids, such as I, knew how to conduct themselves so that they didn’t stand out in a sea of adults. In other words, we looked and acted like we belonged. Today’s generation, and the prior one, failed to learn how to do this on every level.
I remember one night in particular that will help illustrate my point. It was a Saturday night in May of 1992. I was a sophomore in high school. I had been spending a decent amount of time at McGlade’s on Columbus Avenue and 85th street as well as at McSherry’s on Third Avenue and 76th street. But McSherry’s started a karaoke night that a handful of my fellow teens of debauchery loved, especially my friend Debbie. She and I used to get up on the stage in the corner of this little Irish pub and belt out tune after tune. Debbie was one of my dearest friends at that time. And we are still friends to this day!
Believe it or not, that night in May, something incredible happened. For the first time in years, my entire being, my heart and soul, had felt complete. It was as if the weight of the world had been on my shoulders and suddenly lifted. It was the perfect night for a 15-year-old who was going on 45.
A TOP GUN MOMENT
Debbie and I had a habit of joking with each other, and playing pranks, often steeped in pop culture. So, with Top Gun as one of my all-time favorite movies (you see where this is going), I grabbed a friend and we started singing “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” to Debbie, unbeknownst to her until I was right next to her singing. Then she hopped on another mic and joined us! Next thing we know, people out on the street start screaming and singing along. It literally felt like we were in a movie. And that is what almost every night out felt like back then.
It was about the night. It was about the street. It was about us and the city. Today? It’s about the city against us. And I have had more fun having a root canal. It is hard to believe this is the New York City I was born and raised in. Sadly, today’s nightlife generation have been pasteurized, homogenized and purified to death. Their idea of a night of debauchery might as well include a trip to a church (and no, I am not talking about the nightclub I used to work the door at when my nickname was “The Kid”) for the Body and Blood of Christ (remember I am a Catholic after all). Then again, I think this generation might be offended if they did end up in a church! Everything that was fun back then has been sanitized to the point of where it just doesn’t have the same energy, excitement and result in the same level of stories we all used to recount for our nights out.
THE FINAL WORD
The New York of my youth will never be again. That was what the real New York is; gritty, fun, dangerous but unforgettable. This plasticized, nonsensical and very corrupt “Nanny State” that Bloomberg, DeBlasio and Adams have turned it into is just not cool, or kosher for that matter.
Imagine yourself reclining on the sandy white beaches, soaking in the volcanic mud baths of Soufrière, ziplining through lush rainforests, indulging in authentic island food, club-hopping on the Rodney Bay strip, and riding ATVs through the countryside. Envision exploring abandoned sugar plantations, snorkeling in crystal clear waters, chasing brightly colored fish in the shadow of the Pitons, or experiencing a live sea turtle hatching in the last light of dusk.
Equal parts beauty and mystique, Saint Lucia captivates anyone who sets foot on her coastline. Always evocative, she welcomes visitors with her soothing waves, warm beaches, and hospitable people. The only sovereign nation to be named for a woman, the island personifies adventure and inspiration. Her visitors invariably find themselves reluctant to leave and eager to return. Your Next Adventure Awaits....
