REAL ESTATE & YOUR HOME

AROUND TOWN MURRAY HILL By Linette Semino

ncompassing East 34th to 42nd Streets and from Madison Avenue to the East River, Murray Hill is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in Manhattan. It is a lovely neighborhood with a rich history that offers attainable luxury and views to inspire. HISTORY & CULTURE This neighborhood was named for Robert Murray, the head of a respected mercantile family that settled in the area in the 18th century. Other notable early residents include J. P. Morgan, who in 1882 built a brownstone freestanding mansion on Madison Avenue at East 36th Street. Today it is part of The Morgan Library & Museum. Over time, Murray Hill’s pedigree increased, becoming an upscale neighborhood during the 20th century. Now, this vibrant neighborhood has a mix of townhouses on side streets and multi-apartment or commercial buildings on the avenues. There are several modern new construction buildings between Third and First Avenues, providing a mix of historic and modern structures. By the end of the 19th century, when J.P. Morgan moved to Kips Bay, a gentlemen’s agreement had been established restricting the streets of Murray Hill to private homes. Until the invasion of high-rise hotels and apartments in the 1920s, it was a neighborhood of elegant mansions, many of which still stand. In addition, Murray Hill also contains several cultural institutions, as well as missions and consulates to the nearby United Nations headquarters. Murray Hill has it all including renown restaurants, various gyms, yoga studios, bike paths, parks for dogs, and all types of outdoor activities for active people. Everyone falls in love with the welcoming, down-to-earth energy in this convenient and comfortable neighborhood.
