THE WARM DAYS OF SUMMER hat a difference a year makes. Masks are nearly a thing of the past. Airports are jammed, commuter delays are once again the norm. And billionaires are going to space. Yes, the busy life is back for sure! When we live, talk, text, and work from a busy place, no one gets the best version of us. One thing this past year has taught me is that slowing down isn’t something to fear. It’s something to embrace and appreciate. Rushing and running through your life is pointless. So, now that summer is in full swing, the last thing I don’t need is a rushed life. Let’s savor the warm days of summer; it’s a perfect time to enjoy a quieter New York City. By living in the Big Apple, sometimes we overlook what we already have. Dining alfresco at our favorite restaurants, enjoying leisurely strolls in Central Park, and appreciating a bit of culture at one of our newly reopened museums. People will always be in a rush. I get it. But that’s when things go awry. Just ask anyone who has sent out an email or a text when they were rushed. Ask any parent who has tried parenting from a place of stress. Ask any boss who has tried leading from a place of exhaustion. In this special double issue, our editorial team covers the best New York City offers. We found three women who have made the words “relax” and “succeed” their mantra. Dede Gotthelf, owner of the iconic Southampton Inn on Long Island, inspires us with her story of making hospitality her calling after successful careers in finance and real estate. Sue Phillips is another fine example of success. As owner of Scentarium, she is known as “the nose that knows” and is one of the top authorities and perfume designers today. We also spotlight Marilyn Hoffman, who through the years, has positioned her company as one of the top influential in the luxury real estate market positioning her as one of the stellar realtors in the nation. Not to be missed is an interview with Jack and Will Morey of Morey’s Piers. The amusement park/water park is a fun place—and Wildwood tradition. Our exclusive will shed light on how their family made this a successful Jersey Shore getaway. And while you’re at it, take a look at our Montreal Beach Resort feature. It’s what makes Cape May so special. So, as we enjoy the sunny days of summertime, think about this time to reimagine your life. If not now, when? Have a wonderful Summer…and see you in September!

DEDE GOTTHELF A Look At The Woman, Southampton Inn & Her Hamptons by Patricia Canole Photographer Sean Zanni ith a celebrated career in real estate and finance, you will now find Dede Gotthelf successfully ensconced in the hospitality business. The proud owner of Southampton Inn on Long Island’s East End is happily devoted to the desires and needs of her loyal guests.
Well-known and well-respected among her peers and those in the hospitality and business communities, Dede has been the go-to woman who has always graciously given her time, attention, and resources to a myriad of local causes and worthy charities. So much so that she was honored as one of Long Island Business News’ Top Women in Business last year. LOCATION…LOCATION…LOCATION Dede has been overseeing the Inn since 1998. Built in 1973, the Inn is a fixture in the heart of Southampton Village and offers guests elegance and comfort with 90 well-appointed rooms. In addition, the Inn includes a heated 50-foot outdoor pool, all-weather tennis court, ballroom, meet-up rooms, and private gardens. If that isn’t enough, there are also plenty of green spaces for croquet and lawn games. During the past four decades, Dede has taken on unique challenges such as being a significant part of one of the first waterfront condominiums at Battery Park City; assembling the land and site planning for the first Planned Development District (PDD) in Southampton; and repositioning the Southampton Inn,
International Plaza, and Claude’s restaurant in the historic Village of Southampton. During the early days of COVID, she opened the Inn to house essential workers from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Strictly following CDC guidelines, the Southampton Inn continues to offer family- and pet-friendly accommodations and is also known as a prime wedding venue as well as a much-sought-after location for corporate events. The Hamptons getaway attracts countless locals and visitors alike who come to explore the beautiful nature and culture of the East End all year long. We caught up with Dede Gotthelf recently to learn more about her fascinating story.

Tell us more about your successful financial/real estate career. As for finance, after graduating from a formerly all-men’s college (one of 10 women in my class the first year), I was offered a job in the Global Credit Training Program at Chase Manhattan Bank. “Life After Chase” included a stint overseeing $1 billion of urban renewal projects for the New York State Urban Development Corp (now Empire State Development); a Directorship at Julien Studley in investment sales; and a partnership in a Washington DC real estate development company opening an office in New York City. And then I formed Catco Group Inc., a real estate development, brokerage, and consulting company in the Northeast. What is it about Southampton that led you to move there? My parents purchased a fisherman’s cottage in 1951, realizing that Nantucket was too far away from NYC for frequent commutes. So, I have been spending weekends, summers, holidays on Eastern Long Island my entire life. I officially became a resident of the Town of Southampton around ten years ago when the children were off to colleges and the Southampton Inn and other real estate projects offered fulltime employment! It has been a remarkably good change. Southampton offers natural beauty, friendships, recreational opportunities, excellent local grocery and farm-stand shopping, as well as unique boutiques, museums, repertory theater, concerts, author readings. All this as well as meaningful opportunities to assist a plethora of non-profits in their important missions. What led you to join the hospitality industry and purchase of the Southampton Inn? A Southampton real estate broker asked for assistance in putting together a sales brochure for the Southampton Inn and its adjacent commercial/retail complex. I did. And then, my youngest child was accepted to kindergarten in New York City. So, I made an offer to purchase, thinking this would be a short-term fixer-upper and flip. And here we are 23 years later. When you purchased the Inn, did you do the interior design yourself or employ a creative team? I had an architect, interior designer, hotel consulting group, and management company. To refinance in 2003, the new lender mandated that I form a management company and take the reigns as a condition to the loan. And the constant decoration and renovations of 90 guest rooms on several acres with ballroom, meeting rooms, restaurant, library necessitated a crash course for me in interior design to control the costs and consistency of the Inn and its public spaces. I have relied on several local interior designers, such as Shannon Willey at Sea Green Designs and Judy Hadlock at Old Town Crossing over the years for larger projects. You mentioned restaurant: As one of the East End’s famous restaurants, tell us about the inspiration behind Claude’s and what makes it so unique.
20 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
Claude’s restaurant opened in 2007 as part of one of the more extensive renovations and re-positionings at the Southampton Inn. We had an excellent chef, who named the restaurant after our beloved hotel cat (at the time, Oso, which means bear in Spanish). A team of interns from Williams College, joined us that summer and created the raised beds for growing some of the heirloom tomatoes, string beans, peppers, garlic, and eggplant. We also created a separate herb garden to flavor the foods and drinks. But through the past 15 years, Claude’s (renamed after the successor hotel cat) has evolved into more of a breakfast, brunch, and lunch restaurant and provides the café, meeting rooms, lawns, and gardens for private catered events/parties. As a hotel restaurant, Claude’s can change its theme and brand each year. Last year was a successful picnic basket concept (to comply with COVID rules). Guests and the community seemed to embrace the fresh foods, affordable prices, and old-fashioned “picnic” idea, so we have continued with those menus for 2021. We purchased 100 tables and chairs and placed them around the property for diners to pick their favorite picnic table and enjoy! What are your recommendations for first-time guests to see and do in Southampton? We love sharing the many things to do and see in our 380-year-old historic Village of Southampton. The magnificent beaches (including Coopers Beach a mile away just named the #2 beach by Dr. Steven Lederman (aka, Dr. Beach). The sprawling estates and historic homes with tall hedges, manicured grounds, and shingle-style architecture surround the Inn. We will book tennis lessons, rent bicycles (and provide maps); we sometimes offer special discounts to unique local boutiques and the nearby Southampton History Museum. We have lists of restaurants (other than Claude’s, of course) with suggestions for the preferred type of foods, costs, and travel times. We share lists of surfing, sailing, fishing, hiking, and golf venues with our guests. We also offer guests opportunities to purchase tickets to local charity galas. We provide bags of Bedside Reading books at check-in and assist with purchasing tickets to Pianofest in the Hamptons. Guests also enjoy performances emanating from Claude’s white baby grand. There is much to do and see all year long. How do you see future tourism to Southampton, and what have you implemented to channel a guest’s return? Over 80 percent of our guests are returning visitors. The staff welcomes them as extended family who generally notice the changes implemented every year to improve their guest experience. As a member of the Southampton Village Revitalization Board (appointed by the Mayor and Village trustees), I’ve worked with local business leaders to create a less seasonal, culturally rich destination to encourage tourism year-round to our unique and venerable (and elegant) little Village.
JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 21
What changes have you seen in the Village of Southampton? Some 50 years ago, the Hamptons were considered the beach and country. We wore cutoffs and sported bare feet (except in downtown Southampton where we had to have Bermuda shorts and sandals). During the past 30 years, this string of beach communities has evolved into a world-class playground. The homes are magnificent and immense. The cars are fast and fun to see. While it has been exciting to watch the evolution of the Hamptons, it has also been daunting to assure that the year-round community has housing and infrastructure. And that tourists with less fantastic budgets have a welcoming oasis to share the beauty. That has been part of the Southampton Inn and Claude’s brand.
Southampton offers natural beauty, friendships, recreational opportunities— and walking on the magnificent beaches…
If not the owner of The Southampton Inn, what would you be doing? If not owning the Southampton Inn, I would likely be retired from investment banking and deals. I could write a book, paint, practice piano, read, play with animals and children. But I get to do all those things, meet fascinating people, assist a wonderful, dedicated group of employees and try to make a difference to the community by bringing many years of experience and insight. How has being the owner of Southampton Inn changed your life? I went from banking to bureaucrat to broker to builder. But never had I imagined that I would add innkeeper to that list. Moving from Manhattan, having adult children visit our house rather than our brownstone, driving to buy groceries has been a massive lifestyle change. How wonderful! How does Dede Gotthelf relax (is that possible!)? Dede Gotthelf relaxes by working! And swimming laps, playing piano, reading books, and working with like-minded neighbors to make our community a better place for all. Lastly, what do you envision for the future of the Inn and the Village of Southampton? Interestingly, I have plans pending with various approval boards to build new luxury hotel suites, provide some workforce housing, satisfy the need for longer-term rentals (with kitchens and private balconies and porches). And there’s even an Olympic length lap pool planned in the middle of this new project. I believe it will provide more tourism on a year-round basis bringing dollars and vibrancy to our downtown. And it will begin to alleviate an extreme housing shortage (which may lessen some of the traffic issues during the “trade parade” hours). As much as I love the changes and the exciting energy and excitement of the Hamptons, I also hope to preserve the peace, tranquility, environmental beauty, and splendidly relaxing and rejuvenating atmosphere of my Hamptons for all to share. SUE PHILLIPS The Sweet Smell Of Success by Bailey Beckett Photographer Neil Tandy Hair and Makeup Amina Mitchell
love what I do,” says Sue Phillips in an impeccable South African accent on a warm Spring afternoon. “I want people to have a beautiful experience and enjoy the magic of fragrance. I also want them to reflect on who they are by having their own fragrance.” Sue Phillips would know. A veteran of the fragrance business, she created the “Tiffany” perfume as well as its men’s cologne. She also dreamed up “Society for Burberry” as well as other aromas for Trish McEvoy, Avon, Diane Von Furstenberg and Lancaster, among others. Along the way Phillips has held top level positions with the biggest brands in beauty before opening The Scentarium. It’s there she is doing some of her most intimate and inspired work for clients including Jamie Fox, Katie Holmes, and Zendaya, to name a few. One need only look around her laboratory, which could double for a designer atelier, to see Phillips takes this seriously. After greeting each visitor warmly, she has them do a personality quiz which she says is 99 percent accurate in reading her clients.
JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 25
MAKING SENSE OF SCENTS Then 2020 hit and like most businesses in town, COVID-19 took the scent maker off the map. After all, who was looking for a custom perfume during the pandemic? The veteran beauty executive temporarily closed her “scenterprises” where she created bespoke fragrances. Phillips turned her attention to launching her book and made plans for what she hoped would be an eventual return to glamour and the world she helped create. “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future,” Coco Chanel famously said. They are words Phillips has always lived by, and she was ready to put the past year behind her. The virus had other plans. Months later and just as she opened a new studio on the Upper East Side, Phillips met a client who had lost her sense of smell as a direct result of the pandemic. The veteran “Scent Whisperer,” had a sneaking suspicion her signature fragrance journey, featuring 18 scents she hand-makes from ingredients like musk, lavender, and oils, might help. On a rainy day in April, the woman came to see Phillips at her new space on the Upper East Side, and together they made history. “I said, ‘Let’s just be present, just concentrate, smell with your brain.’” Phillips went on to explain that it’s okay if you can’t smell anything, but just allow the vibrations and the frequencies to come in. “I’m not a doctor, and I’m not a chemist, but I know the extraordinary powers of fragrance.”
26 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES Mid-way through their session, the woman suddenly recognized a deeper woodsy and vanilla scent. Her eyes filled with tears, and she was overcome with emotion. As a “long hauler” still battling symptoms of COVID, she hadn’t smelled or tasted a thing in 14 months. Until now. “She couldn’t really smell the top notes, she couldn’t really identify the middle notes, but then suddenly there was a flicker in her eye, and she said, ‘I can smell something. I don’t know what it is, but I can smell something.’ It was so palpable that she welled up crying.” So did Phillips. Through the magic of social media, the news spread like a wildfire. First through New York, then across the country and a month later it was global. Phillips has seen dozens of clients whose smell was affected by COVID, and her “fragrance journey” has helped more than 20 regain their ability. “Smell is such a big part of life’s pleasures,” says Phillips. “It is our most powerful sense because it connects memory and emotion. After COVID, people began to realize how crucial it is to our lives. When it is out of reach, it affects many realms of life, including eating and taste. People get very depressed. It’s devastating. The fact that I’m able to help them rediscover their sense of smell and get back to enjoying life again is one of the best parts of my job. I’m so happy that I’ve been able to help people.” Phillips, whose private sessions start at $850, has been offering specially priced scent healing consultations and is developing a fragrance kit with scents to help clients “smell with their brains.”
JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 27
THE NOSE KNOWS Phillips has been doing that for years, since she first began her extraordinary career in beauty and fragrance. She steadily climbed to the top of the industry, powered by her near Super Woman ability to recognize scent, a chemist-like understanding of ingredients, extraordinary instinct in how scents will trigger reaction, and a psychologist’s intuition in how different smells can affect a person’s mood and memories. She’s been called “The Nose that Knows,” and her track record speaks for itself. “All the fragrances I have developed and created are like my children,” says a modest Phillips. “I love them all because they were all different, and it was a distinct honor to be associated with iconic brands and companies. Tiffany was so memorable. I was able to capture the heritage and history of Tiffany & Co. in one unmistakable scent, which is still one of the most in-demand perfumes even though it’s no longer made. If you had told me that growing up in South Africa, I would be involved in the creation of so many global brands, I would not have believed it! Her 12-year-old company, is where Phillips creates fragrances for clients, consults with brands and, yes, has finally published her long-awaited book The Power of Perfume: How to Choose It, Wear it and Enjoy It! which has become a best seller. “It’s an homage to perfumes and scents and how it really helps people gain confidence, reflect their individuality and create a signature,” she says. “I always ask my clients, ‘Why wear what everyone else wears when you can create your own?’” The 280-page book is filled with highlights from Phillips’ career, myths about perfume and little-known-facts about the intoxicating effect of fragrance on all your senses. “My mission,” she says, “is to diffuse fragrance out of the bottle and to create memorable experiences.” For more information on Sue Phillips, visit suephillips.com and scenterprises.com. •

Marilyn Hoffman
THE ONE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLAR REALTOR By AP Connolly
MARILYN HOFFMAN’S expertise in selling extraordinary farms, ranches, and estate properties attracts a clientele that reads like a Who’s Who of business, sports, entertainment, and the social register. Golfer Lee Trevino, a Saudi Prince, sports legend Deion Sanders, transportation secretary Milo Bryant, a billionaire Texas oilman, Horatio Alger member Carl Westcott, cosmetics queen Mary Kay, Merv Griffin, and a major sports team owner have all been her clients. Marilyn recently made history by listing the most expensive home in Texas, a $100,000,000 property. She also sold one of the largest estates in Texas to the new owners of a major sports team. Her sale of a $9,995,000 penthouse in Dallas was the most expensive penthouse ever sold in Dallas. Marilyn sold a $13,500,000 estate to the owners of a Scottish castle. Her most recent sale was a $20,000,000 estate that she listed, sold, and closed for full price in 24 days. This 35,000 square foot home was the largest and most expensive sale in the state. This estate was previously listed with another international realtor at a lower price and did not sell.

“Marilyn’s aggressive approach to the international marketing of the property resulted in a completed transaction in five months from start to finish. I’m hasten to add that the prior agencies failed completely to do any effective marketing of Brantley Manor, although I did spend a substantial upfront marketing fee with them.” Eugene L. Brantley, Esquire Seller of a 13,000 sq. ft. South Carolina Mansion
Marilyn Hoffman sold this 35,000 sq. ft. $20,000,000 estate for full price in only 24 days. It was previously listed with another international realtor for years unsuccessfully. JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 31

DOWN THE SHORE AT MOREY’S PIERS
A CONVERSATION WITH JACK & WILL MOREY By Patricia Canole
t all started with a slide. Five decades later, amusement piers and water parks, plus a whole lot of fun, have defined the city of Wildwood to thousands of shore goers. In 1968, with the family hotel business still in its early stages, the Morey name was not yet recognized. While vacationing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, brothers Will, and Bill Morey noticed a giant fiberglass slide at a shopping center parking lot. They were so impressed and taken with the crowd’s reaction to the trendy ride that they surmised it could be just as popular in their hometown of New Jersey. A year later, having made a substantial investment in two plots of beach real estate in North Wildwood, they concluded that the time was right to build what was known as The Wipe Out. This giant slide became a summer sensation and a fixture at Morey’s Surfside Pier on 25th Avenue. The 350-foot-long, 40-foot-high slide circulating over 12,000 gallons of water a day remained in existence until 2010 when Jack and Will Morey realized that progress sometimes meant getting rid of the old making way for new attractions, which resulted in a master plan for developing Morey’s Piers to what it is today. New York Lifestyles caught up with second-generation Jack and Will Morey for some more stories and what’s ahead for this popular Jersey Shore destination.
JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 39
Your father and uncle started this amusement park in 1969 and what would become Morey’s Piers. How has it evolved into the popular park we see today? Jack: We have built many things over the last 50 plus years, which is critical to maintaining freshness, uniqueness, and a culture over time. However, one thing that has not changed is that our guests really want a fun, clean place to enjoy with their families. So, while change is critical, we will never change our commitment to family. Will: I celebrate that I agree with Jack’s thoughts. I’ll add that our business has involved into a much more complex and sophisticated undertaking. A part of that is just the nature of operating a business today, which occurs for several reasons; however, certainly, the breadth and depth of the regulatory environment is a contributor. I’ll also add that Morey’s Piers’ offerings are much more comprehensive than in the early years, with a significant focus today on creating an environment that adults like to visit for themselves, not solely for their kids. Are all three Morey’s Piers the same? Jack: No, but truth be told, they still need to be more different than they are, which consumes me most days of the week. Will: I agree. This is a work in process, and while I think we will figure out the “big rocks” of uniqueness, we’re resolved that it’s an ongoing journey and not a destination. How many days do you recommend families need to experience what Morey’s Piers is all about? Jack: Two. One day for the water park and one of the amusement rides. Will: I’d recommend a lifetime! A day at the water park(s), a night at the piers, and another to take in the unique experiences like a cabana by the ocean, dinner at Joe’s Fish Company with a view of the amusement lights in full action. Then you can’t leave without lunch at PigDog Beach Bar. And yes, please bring your dog (we haven’t seen a pig there yet!). Tell us what last year was like for the Morey’s Piers family? How did you pull through 2020? Jack: Let’s just say we are happy to have survived. Will: I’m reminded of the phrase from Charles Dickens: “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” It’s a story of unbelievable commitment, perseverance, and creativity on the part of a great team who collectively refused to stay down when knocked down. That was the “best” part, set upon the foundation of health maintained by our team. The journey from survive to thrive appears to be underway. With that in mind, tell our readers the precautions you have implemented and put in place for the 2021 visitor. Will: Morey’s Piers has a team that is laser-focused on safety. With that as our foundation, we’ll do what we have continued to do for years and certainly through the COVID pandemic, carefully examine all available information (CDC, etc.) and implement aggressive mitigation practices. Describe who your customers are and why they return year after year? Jack: Our customers are like America, a melting pot, in every way. What they seem to have in common, regardless of their demographic or wealth, is their love for family and tradition. I love how the melting pot intermingles in ways that tend to not be the norm in our all too often fractured society. Will: Yes, as a wise brother has repeatedly said, “Wildwood isn’t for everybody, but it is for anybody.” Can you envision a time when Cape May County and the Jersey Shore could become a year-round destination? Jack: Yes, it is now. Well, at least some of it. Cape May, NJ, has done a really great job becoming year-round. However, we need to be cautious with this desire as one of the things that make the Wildwoods and Morey’s Piers special is that it is seasonal, and you cannot get it every day. I love Thanksgiving turkey, but do I want it every day? Will: I don’t see that as a goal, at least from a tourism destination perspective. Part of being special is the seasonality, just like the joy that comes with Spring arriving after Winter. Cape May County thriving as a three-season destination seems the current goal. We are, however, working on developing the non-tourism-related industry to create more opportunities for existing residents and to draw new residents into the region.

JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 41
If you could make any change to the city of Wildwood right now, what would it be? Jack: There are a zillion great things on the drawing board, so there is not much I would change. Will: Just speed up the “reinvention.” That said, the County and City partnership in the County’s Municipal Redevelopment Initiative program with its pilot focusing on Pacific Avenue is very encouraging. Now tell us more about the Morey’s Piers’ Amusement Piers and Water Parks. What will visitors see in 2021? Jack: For the first year in our history, not much is changing at the piers for apparent reasons. However, all four of our hotels have gone through a significant change due to the pandemic, all of which embrace more outdoor lounging and dining spaces. Will: This may be the first year when there’s unrivaled magic
and excitement about coming back to what was and becoming reacquainted with tradition. What are five musts to do at Morey’s Piers? Jack: Great White, Ferris Wheel, Log Flume, Curley’s Fries, and PigDog Beach Bar. Will: The Roller Coasters: Great White, Sea Serpent, Great Nor’easter, and Runaway Tram; Ferris Wheel; Curley’s Fries; Ocean Oasis Water Park, and Stubborn Bros. Restaurant. Finally, let us know how Jack and Will relax (if that’s possible!). Jack: Sailing and snow skiing. Will: Jack meant to say, “Spending time away from my brother.” Sailing (“away preferred”), going aloft with any craft with wings, cycling, open water swimming, and beach runs with two Vizslas. •

OCEAN EDGE RESORT & GOLF CLUB A CAPE COD JEWEL By Melanie Carden
atching the sun blur itself into the ocean for yet another breathtaking Cape Cod sunset, I lingered on the sun-dappled terrace of the Ocean Edge Resort’s crown jewel—The Mansion. STAY Originally built in 1912, The Mansion at Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club is the hub of the 429-acre resort, a wonderland of quintessential Cape Cod experiences. Positioned on the Lower Cape, the resort is 89 miles southeast of Boston’s Logan airport—and light-years away from the daily grind.

With 337 rooms—traditional to suites and extended-stay villas and townhouses—the resort is open year-round. Whether you prefer luxurious multi-room suites with fireplaces and whirlpool tubs—or family-friendly units at The Villages with kitchenettes and en-suite laundry amenities—the accommodations at Ocean Edge surpass all expectations. Ocean Edge Resort ©Courtesy of Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club
EAT Summer at Ocean Edge ushers in some of the Cape’s most beloved offerings—including food so iconic it’s more than Instagram-worthy; it’s forever memorable. With seven different dining options for summer, the resort ensures access to all the fresh-catch seafood. And buttery lobster rolls are always within reach. Bayzo’s Pub, the resort’s English-style tavern, offers upscale casual charm as well as live music in the summer. Indulge in Swordfish Risotto or Executive Chef Philip Flath’s signature Pub Burger. Either way, don’t miss out on the Fountain of Youth cocktail. Before your palate is blessed with hints of citrus, lavender, and hibiscus, you’ll need to burst the cocktail’s smoke-filled bubble-dome. From start to finish, this drink is summery and sublime. Ocean Edge also offers outdoor dining options ranging from casual cocktails and swim-up pool movies at the Shark Bah to post-golf meals at Linx Tavern. If you’re too relaxed to leave the sun-drenched private beach, walk your sandy feet up to The Beach Bar for lunch. Adjacent to The Mansion, Ocean Terrace—the property’s signature restaurant, overlooks Cape Cod Bay. 48 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
PLAY Customizing my vacation was a breeze. The resort offers an endless array of activities—paddle boarding, kayaking, croquet lessons, pickleball, nine tennis courts, four pools, and seasonal archery lessons. A relaxing day strolling along the beach and watching the shenanigans of ocean crabs must be capped off with a trip to the spa. Their Beach House Spa is on par with the elite, and you can even book a private spa soirée! The property is also home to Brewster’s only 18-hole, Nicklaus Design golf course, Troon Privé. It was here that their golf pro, Shayne Sakson, reminded me that this game is an absolute delight. One lesson and a bucket of golf balls later, I could feel my inner PGA-diva shine. As a lifelong New Englander, I was blown away that the resort offered an ocean-centric activity I’ve never experienced—an oyster farm tour. In a private tour of the resort’s onsite oyster bed farm, I waded in ankledeep water, learning about oysters’ habitats and ability to filter ocean water. Who knew they were tasty little environmental warriors? For more information on Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club, visit oceanedge.com. •

THE SETTLERS INN A CLASSIC COUNTRY INN By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
estled in the Northeast Pocono Mountains lake region, in one of the Keystone State’s “Best Small Towns,” this classic country inn beckons visitors to discover simple pleasures of life. Located in Hawley, The Settlers Inn is a historic lodge showcasing authenticity and high quality in its lodging and dining options. In 1980 Grant and Jeanne Genzlinger purchased The Settlers Inn, originally a small-community hotel that had experienced several incarnations. Under the Genzlingers, restoration would produce one of the finest examples of English Arts & Craftsstyle lodging. The Arts & Crafts movement dates to 1860’s England. It reflects the desire for a more humanized, personal influence on design and style, as opposed to the heavy ornamentation of the high Victorian era. For the Genzlingers, this idea fits naturally with their goal of providing a “hands-on” approach to hospitality. JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 55
AUTHENTIC SIMPLICITY It is the artful simplicity of The Settlers Inn that is its charm. From the selection of hand-made bread and desserts and a menu offering farm-to-table dining at its best to the cane-woven dining chairs and wealth of handcrafted products and materials that adorn the Inn and its 23 beautifully appointed guestrooms, “authenticity” is the guiding principle. Enjoy the simple pleasures of alfresco dining on the Inn’s terrace, sipping a cocktail at a table set in Muriel’s Garden, or toasting marshmallows over a campfire at the Inn’s private spot on the picturesque Lackawaxen River. Tours of the gardens are offered during the summer months. The Inn’s beehives produce honey used in some of the chef ’s recipes. Find respite in front of the large fireplace in the comfy living room, sipping a glass of wine from the Chestnut Tavern or in a game of Scrabble at the Inn’s giant Scrabble board. CENTRAL FLORIDA ADVENTURES BEYOND DISNEY By Jenny Peters
ay the words “Central Florida,” and the first thing that pops to mind is Walt Disney World, while the second is probably Universal Studios Florida. This is especially true for families. But for those of us who crave some real adventure on vacation, there’s a whole different way to spend time in Central Florida. So, grab the sunscreen, bring your athletic wear, bathing suits, backpacks, and sturdy shoes, and head out on a trip to the places where Florida gets a bit wild. Unlike Disney and Universal, you might feel a true adrenaline rush somewhere along the way. And don’t worry, there are still comfortable hotels and delicious restaurants to enjoy once your daytime dives into Florida’s natural wonders are completed. Note you’ll need a rental car to get around, which we did in seven days. Equipment rentals are available for all the adventures, so no need to bring your gear. Pandemic restrictions have been lifted in Florida as of May 2021 but bring masks in case establishments have maintained that requirement for entry.
OCALA Play About an hour north of Orlando is Ocala, in the heart of Marion County. That’s the spot known as the “Horse Capital of the World,” where there are more horses (and horse farms) than anywhere else in the USA. Equine lovers can see huge thoroughbred competitions here at the massive World Equestrian Center or do your own riding and join a guided horseback tour with Cactus Jack’s Trail Rides or Happy Acres Ranch. For a more heart-pounding experience, head to Ocala’s Canyons Zip Line and Adventure Park, where a real adrenaline rush awaits. In mostly flat Florida, there is a canyon (an old quarry formed by limestone miners back in the 1930s) and massive trees and lakes, where four different zip lining tours await. Try not to scream with delight as you zoom more than 1,100 feet on a single zip. It’s a blast! 58 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
Ocala
More beautiful outdoor fun awaits at Silver Springs. The historic artisan springs create a fascinating ecosystem in a vast state park where tourists have flocked since the 1860s. Glass-bottom boat tours began in the 1970s and are still an excellent way to see the springs as well as the flora and fauna (including alligators, water birds, monkeys, manatees, and more) that thrive in this protected park. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are popular ways to get up close to the critters, with rentals available on site. Or take a hike through the beautiful woods and mangroves on the numerous trails that wind throughout this lovely park. Stay Make the Hilton Ocala your home base, where they are cooking up a blackened grouper sandwich, and don’t miss MAE Beer & Tapas, where the four Natera brothers are doing great things with tacos, street corn, pulled pork and more.

THE SPORTS COAST Play Next up on the Central Florida adventure agenda is known locally as The Sports Coast, the Pasco County region located near the Gulf Coast about an hour south of Ocala. For an enjoyable day, begin at Sip on Grand, where Sean Fulton combines luscious charcuterie plates with a fascinatingly diverse byglass-or-bottle wine list. Slip into the old speakeasy hidden there, too, then pack up what’s left and take a leisurely walk over to the river, where you’ll hop on to the Lucky Booty Cycleboat helmed by Captain Bobby and his son. That’s a flywheel boat you and your gang pedal while you party, all the way out the river to the gulf. There’s music, conviviality, and plenty of sights to see along the way–and happily, it has a motor, too, if your foot power gives out along the way. Go at sunset for a view of the stilt fishing houses built offshore out in the gulf; there are only nine of them still in existence, evoking a long-ago time in Florida’s history. Cap off this quick stay in Pasco County with the ultimate ride, ascending in a hot-air balloon with American Balloons at the crack of dawn. Pilot Tom Warren and his team take you soaring up to 3000 feet above the trees for a sky-high view of East Pasco county. It’s an exhilarating experience, even for those who like to sleep past 5 am. If you’re still awake, keep going to Starkey Farm in New Port Richey and pick (and eat) sweet ripe blueberries until they come out your ears.
Ocala
Stay Make the lovely little town of New Port Richey your home base and hopefully stay in the newly renovated (but reportedly still haunted) Hacienda Hotel. A pink landmark opened in 1927 and due to reopen this summer. That’s the spot where plenty of celebrities stayed back in the day, from Irving Berlin to Shirley Temple; others had homes on the Pithlachascotee River, which leads out to the Gulf of Mexico.
TAMPA Play Complete this off-the-beaten-path Florida trip in Tampa, just a quick drive south. There you can continue your active days with a morning trip to Sparkman Wharf, where F45 offers yoga and other workouts in an outdoor setting overlooking Tampa Bay. Then keep going and hit the nearby 2.6-mile Riverwalk trail for a bike ride or hike along the Hillsborough River. Or hold off until closer to sunset, when you can dine outdoors at Ulele, one of Tampa’s best eateries located right on the walk. Be sure to try their charred oysters! If wild rollercoasters are your cup of tea, spend the day getting rocked and rolled at Busch Gardens, and be sure to get up close with the park’s Safari Tour’s giraffes, who love to eat right out of your hand. Stay And after all these action-packed days, finish your trip by checking into the elegant new J. W. Marriott Tampa Water Street for some first-class roof pool time and treat your body to a muchneeded massage at the hotel’s top-notch spa. AROUND TOWN HARLEM By Lisa Maysonet
arlem, NYC, has gone through some tremendous renovations over the last few years, becoming one of New York City’s most prime areas to live. New buildings have gone up, and old ones have been restored. Long known for its intimate jazz clubs, soul food institutions, and African-American heritage, Harlem draws diverse locals and visitors. Trendy eateries, stylish clubs, and hip bars make for an energetic nightlife scene. Harlem has a long history, but one thing it’s always been known for green spaces and lush parks. You’ll find an array of parks to visit. Harlem Art Park or East Harlem Art Park is nestled between the Harlem Courthouse and Casabe Houses. One of the main attractions of the East Harlem Art Park is “Growth,” an engaging 15-foot-high red sculpture located in the center of the park. Artist Jorge Rodriguez dedicated the sculpture in 1985. “Growth,” Rodriquez’s first large-scale permanent work, was also the first project completed by the Percent for Art Program. Administered by the City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Percent for Art Program uses one percent of specific capital project budgets to commission works of art as part of new construction. Another park that nurtures the entire community is Marcus Garvey providing pastimes for children, teens, adults, and the elderly. The two playgrounds are built for all children, including those with disabilities, giving the neighborhood’s youngest members hours of fun on the park’s slides, fountains, and drawbridges. On summer days, families and friends swim and sun in its outdoor pool, and in the warm evenings, they gather to watch plays and concerts in the park’s amphitheater.

RENAISSANCE PROPERTIES THE REBIRTH OF NYC By Lillian Langtry
he father-son team of Kenneth and Bradley Fishel of Renaissance Properties continues to lease space in the emergence of New York City. With the assistance of the Cohen Team at Newmark, the Fishels have leased significant space across their portfolio. Before the arrival of the virus, the Fishels’ buildings were almost fully leased. During the devastating impact of the virus, they formulated a plan to release their new vacancy as if they were going to war. The first step was to assemble their army, which included architects, design professionals, public relations, and a contingent of contractors available to get to work right away. Their battle plan included restoring their historic spaces to pristine condition, showcasing their natural materials, and highlighting the numerous operable monumental windows in each area. Next, they constructed a smattering of pre-built offices in diverse sizes that invited tenants to move in quickly. Prices for the pre-built and the open plan loft spaces were adjusted in line with the market to be competitive and attractive for leasing. The Cohen team then got to work to show the spaces and successfully leased them. If a prospective tenant indicated they needed a change or addition within the area, the brokers promptly contacted the owners and replied to the tenant immediately. “We’ve leased to great tenants,” says Bradley Fishel. New leases include Nice Shoes, The Lede Company, Galileo, Healthquarters, NotCo, Bevel PR, and Serengeti Asset Management at 166 Crosby Street for a combined 64,534 square feet. “We just built a $2 million incredible lobby on Crosby Street, which features Joe Coffee, lounge seating, and a bike room. There’s nothing else like it in this market.” 66 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021

THE START OF SOMETHING GOOD The Fishels recently hosted an exclusive broker’s event in the newly renovated historic commercial space, 632 Broadway, also known as 166 Crosby Street in Noho. As the pace of New York business activity starts to accelerate out of the Pandemic, Renaissance Properties demonstrated its focus on being one of the leaders in its field with the launch of its revamped lobby at 166 Crosby Street.
Ken Fishel, Bradley Fishel ©Patrick McMullan
The initial purpose of the lobby was to provide a second entrance for 632 Broadway, one of Renaissance’s other four locations in the city. This space comes equipped with a full Joe’s Coffee Bar, plus a bike room to attract businesses and employees seeking sustainable transportation alternatives. The lobby achieves Bradley Fishel’s mission of focusing on sustainability while creating a communal place for employees and entrepreneurs to come together. For building occupants, the 166 Lobby serves as a second welcoming space to gather, caffeinate, and converse, three things we will probably need more of moving forward. The party concluded with speeches from Bradley Fishel and exclusive leasing agent JD Cohen of Newmark. In a crowd of millennial metropolitans, Cohen exclaimed to an applauding crowd that thanks to Ownership’s foresight and flexibility in response to COVID-19, the team has leased approximately 125,000 square feet since the pandemic hit within RPNY’s buildings. Fishel stood tall, not just a proud businessman but a humble son, as he expressed his sincere admiration for his father’s lessons, a man who “taught him everything he knows.” This duo is living proof of the correlation between a strong relationship and a successful business partnership with a forward-thinking outlook and flexibility. As New York businesses seek to move past a year of uncertainty, the grand opening of the new lobby at 166 Crosby Street proved to be a glimpse of hope for what Bradley Fishel coined, “the re-awakening of New York City.” At their other buildings, the Fishel-Cohen partnership is enjoying similar leasing success. “The Fishels spend money. Period. It shows in their product. Their timeliness, flexibility, and inventiveness are best in class. Tenants have choices, and there is a flight to quality in this type of market. The Fishels have all that it takes to get the deal done.” says JD Cohen from Newmark.
AN EYE TO THE FUTURE “We’ve kept the best space for last,” said Kenneth Fishel. At 166 Crosby Street, we have the most spectacular space within the downtown market. The area features 36 perimeter windows in a perfectly rectangular classic loft that soars above neighboring buildings. The Fishels are waiting for the “right tenant” to make an offer on the space: “We’ll do whatever we need to do for the right tenant,” adds Fishel. With an eye towards distressed assets, Renaissance Properties specializes in value-add investments focusing on Prewar Prime Properties. From commercial & retail building ownership to leasing, management, and construction, Renaissance has built its reputation on its people’s superior capabilities and efficiency, its most important resource. With an emphasis on quality and attention to detail, Renaissance brings a high level of comfort and modern technology, including the most elegant build-outs and the fastest services to all their treasured tenants. 166 Crosby Roof Deck ©Renaissance Properties

DXA STUDIO
DESIGNING A BETTER FUTURE By AP Connolly
uxury architecture and design firm DXA Studio provides a rare balance of expertly crafted design with technical proficiency. Established in 2011, DXA has expertise spanning a full spectrum of services and project categories, including multi- and single-family residential, commercial, institutional, and hotel design. Co-Founders Jordan Rogove and Wayne Norbeck established DXA studio a decade ago to create a distinct identity, clarity, and ingenuity design process. Believing in the power of architecture to positively influence the lives of all that engage it, the multi-award-winning firm focuses on authenticity, sustainability, and innovation in all its projects. DXA stands out through its capitalization of in-depth research and analysis before each project. Their leadership guides the team to identify opportunities to push boundaries and integrate technological advances in building materials, construction, and sustainable strategies. Their unique process allows the firm to produce creative solutions and distinctive design work that consistently outperforms expectations. But designing is just one of this team’s talents. Both Rogove and Norbeck are also in the final drafting stages of their new book, set to release this year, that touches upon the deep, inextricable relationship between the unique past and future potential of architecture that defines DXA’s practice. DXA has recently emphasized health and well-being through architectural design at projects like the Maverick in Chelsea, a 20-story tall luxury residential building that incorporates biophilic elements throughout. The firm is also the architect for The Rowan, the most significant new residential project in Astoria, featuring a glass lobby with a green roof surrounded by a landscaped entrance plaza and private garden. 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021

PRESERVING THE PAST
The Great Bridge DXA Studio
Previously, DXA worked on the interiors— including residential, lobby, and amenity spaces— for one building within the celebrated Essex Crossing development. The design merges the gritty quality of the Lower East Side neighborhood and the stark contemporary facade with an elegant and refined luxury residential experience. DXA works closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) on many complex projects through the belief and passion that preserving the past creates value for the future. It notably designed 827-831 Broadway, a commercial, landmarked restoration project in lower Manhattan that once housed Willem De Kooning, master of Abstract Expressionism. At 49 Greene, a six-story building in the Soho Cast-Iron District, DXA received unanimous approval from the LPC to restore the building’s existing storefront and facade, construct a new roof, install a new penthouse addition on top, and reimagine the interior layouts of each floor. Midtown Viaduct DXA Studio
A LOOK TO THE FUTURE As for the future of New York City, DXA has big plans. Rogove and Norbeck see silver linings to the pandemic, with public spaces coming out as the next big trend. With the city reclaiming outdoor space to pedestrians and cyclists over automobiles, the firm is gearing up for the streets to be vitalized like never before. DXA incorporated this prediction into “The Great Bridge,” its reimagining of the Brooklyn Bridge, a design that yields an experience that is more accessible, safe, democratic, and enjoyable for all. The design won top honors in many acclaimed competitions, including the Architect’s Newspaper Awards and the American Institute of Architects New York State Awards. The firm is keen on competing in international competitions for civic spaces. With its forward-thinking conception of the Midtown Viaduct, DXA designed an urban pathway connecting Moynihan Train Hall to the High Line, which was globally recognized and awarded in competitions such as NYCxDesign and Metals in Construction Magazine Awards.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING Rogove and Norbeck are also gearing up for growth in affordable housing due to the recent and ongoing social justice awakening. With an increase in developer interest to work on these projects, they are excited for New York City to see a more equal, affordable, and diverse future.
The Rowan DXA Studio
DXA is involved in numerous projects that explore modular construction and is currently working on a significant, multibuilding development in Washington, D.C., where the firm is master planning a neighborhood from the ground up. Over the past several years, they have served as Visiting Professors of Practice for the School of Architecture + Design at their alma mater Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where they are actively involved in teaching and mentoring the architects of tomorrow. HEALTH & WELLNESS
ON PINS AND NEEDLES ORA: THE REMEDY FOR PURE RELAXATION By Bailey Beckett
oking myself with needles has never been on my bucket list but after a year being stuck inside, I was looking for some release that didn’t come in a bag of Cheetos. Like many people in this new reality, I tried everything to relax and calm my nerves from massage to even a stay-cation at The Pierre (verdict: fabulous!), but a persistent feeling of unease always returned and settled on my neck, shoulders, and back. Then someone suggested ORA, a serene acupuncture oasis tucked discreetly in the Village. There, I would undergo my very first experience with a trained acupuncturist, who expertly placed small needles throughout my backside while I laid comfortably on a heated bed. On certain parts of the body, I could feel a small pulse of energy released, but for the most part, it was painless and, well, effective. I left with the world off my shoulders and a general sense of relief and excitement to finish my day. I caught up with Kim Ross, the founder of ORA, to understand the age-old practice and why her oasis is one of New York’s favorite acupuncture experiences. When did you first discover acupuncture? Health and wellness have always played a substantial role in my life as I was diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes at age 11 and struggled with other digestive and thyroid-related issues through the years. When I finally found acupuncture, I felt like myself again. I was empowered. I was able to find balance and healing through this full-body approach. The catalyst for opening ORA was when I went to Harvard Business School, and my busy schedule prevented me from routinely working with my acupuncturist, Gabriel Sher, who is now the Head of Acupuncture at ORA. That is when I recognized the power of acupuncture and the role it played in my life -not only for health purposes but for everyday benefits as well. 74 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021

ORA is elevating acupuncture to be a routine luxury—no matter where you are in your healing journey. We launched in the heart of NoHo in March 2020 as a modern acupuncture space offering a meditative escape and relief from everyday life with a mission to educate consumers about the healing power of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). We believe everyone should make their well-being a priority. Combining efficiency with relaxation, we bring our clients the healing experience of acupuncture without compromising their time. Our clients have access to the tea and tonic bar in the space curated by acupuncturists and Chinese herbalists, which offers proprietary blends that focus on specific results— like Down to Detox and Back to Center sips—bringing a particular moment of calmness pre-and-post treatment. Whether it’s an intimate in-space experience at ORA or a virtual checkin to reassess and rebalance your qi, the ORA experience embraces a balanced lifestyle that ultimately makes you feel better in every aspect of your life. Beyond the physical space, ORA’s luxury online shop offers ORA healing rituals and remedies and new products such as our exclusive bath salts that help our clients to continue to heal at home. LIMANI
NO PASSPORT REQUIRED By Patricia Canole
e have much to be thankful for when it comes to Ancient Greece: Education, medicine, philosophy, government and, of course, the Olympics. And while it can be said the pillars of Western civilization have been to the Greeks, little has changed in their culture. The same can be said for Greek cuisine. After all, why alter perfection. At the core of their Mediterranean cuisine is olive oil with dishes flavored with capers and lemons, proving that there is perfection in simplicity in a complicated world.
AEGEAN PARADISE So, on a late-spring evening, there was nothing I craved more than lightly-prepared seafood at Limani. How fortunate I was to revisit again. With a sensual feel of the crystal azure waters of the islands, the dining room sublimely captures the Aegean perfectly. You might have to remind yourself this is not a Greek taverna but rather a Rockefeller Center restaurant. Opened in 2014, the restaurant continues to satisfy the palates of New Yorkers and visitors alike. Executive Chef/Partner, M.J. Alam executes a menu highlighting authentic Greek cuisine. Drawing on the Greek tradition of meze, every dish is served family-style. “I believe sharing is happiness, and our traditional but modern approach shines through.” A specialty of the house is the tender grilled sashimi quality octopus that is ladled with flavor. “My approach is simplistic,” Chef Alam continued to explain. “I only use light oils and handpicked ingredients when preparing dishes so that Mediterranean flavors truly stand out.” 76 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
Cocktails At Limani
The sprawling and dramatic 8000-squarefoot airy dining room evokes a summer feel created by soft blue lighting, white tablecloths, with seating encompassing a blue reflection pool. Close your eyes and you will sense the Santorini spirit. For starters, an order of Spanakopita, a savory phyllo dough pastry stuffed with spinach, scallions, dill, and feta or the sashimi-style Tunisian Grilled Octopus will set in motion this journey. To most Greeks, it’s comfort food and both are outstanding examples of the quality menu found at Limani. Satisfy your adventurous spirit with the Kolokithi (paperthin crispy zucchini chips with kefalograviera cheese and tzatziki), or Horta (a mix of dandelion, escarole, and Swiss chard). Always a sure winner is Stuffed Calamari as well as Greek Meze with pita bread. Chef Alam takes delight in finding new and rare discoveries that lead to spontaneous culinary creations, which result in seasonal surprises, much to the delight of Limani’s devoted patrons. His mantra has always been “stay true to the Mediterranean flavors so that fish is the star of the show.”
Limani Dining Room
You might have to remind yourself this is not a Greek taverna but rather a Rockefeller Center restaurant. Branzino
SURF & TURF AT THE READY An attentive and knowledgeable staff will guide you through the fresh catch of the day and specials. Everything is prepared to your liking in a variety of traditional ways such as grilled, baked in a salt crust or served sashimi style. Specialties range from the rare to the more well-known species such as Loup de Mer, Dover Sole, Black Sea Bass, Pompano, and Red Snapper. Whichever whole fish you’ve chosen, it’ll be brought to the table and portioned while you watch— and ample enough for a party of two. Meat dishes are also exquisitely prepared with a choice of dry-aged cuts such as the Cowboy Steak, Veal Chops, Filet Mignon, and not to be overlooked are the popular Lamb Chops always succulent to the taste and which my guest and I genuinely enjoyed. To ensure an authentic experience, Limani offers a vast selection of fine Greek wines ranging from dry whites and rosés to full-bodied reds.
SWEET SENSATIONS No visit to a Greek restaurant is complete without Baklava for dessert. Brimming with almonds, walnuts, cinnamon, and layers of phyllo it is smothered in honey syrup. Truly a sweet tooth delight. Of course, there are other traditional sweets to consider including Galaktoboureko (milk semolina custard wrapped in phyllo), and Karidopita (a dense rich walnut sponge cake soaked in honey syrup and served with honey lavender ice cream). Here’s my thought for today: For an escape from the concrete jungle to the warmth of the Greek isles, Limani will fit any itinerary. Even better, go with someone you love and think of it as a quick romantic getaway. For more information on Limani NYC, visit limani.com. •

MUSEUM DINING
WHERE ART & CULINARY INNOVATION CREATE A PERFECT PALETTE By Meryl Pearlstein
rt and food make a satisfying pairing in New York City. Responding to increasing museum popularity and culinary sophistication, museums have upped their game with dining options to please the most discerning palates. Skip the cafeterias or hot dog stands and grab a seat at these varied eateries without leaving the museum. MANHATTAN’S MUSEUM MILE The Metropolitan Museum of Art Affectionately known as the Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the grande dame of Museum Mile, celebrating its 150th year with mega indoor and roof exhibits. Equally groundbreaking, the Met has added a summer sidewalk café to its lineup of dining options. A welcome spot to refresh after walking the galleries, the Plaza Café offers a changing menu of sandwiches from Chef Bill Telepan, snacks, and fruit ice pops from Brooklyn’s own People’s Pops. Order your “picnic” from the counter at 83rd Street and pick your favorite peoplewatching table overlooking the fountain. Info: metmuseum.org. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Mus eum Named after mus e u m arch ite c t Fr an k Lloyd Wright, The Wright at the Guggenheim also joins in New York City’s burgeoning café culture with the new “Summer at the Wright” experience. You might feel like you’re sitting in the café at the Hotel Sacher in Vienna but for the view of Central Park, along with the under-the-radar experience. Museumgoers in the know, however, line up for the restaurant’s schnitzel and goulash with a beloved Sacher torte to finish. You’ll want to try scallop with pumpkin and tarragon ravioli, for example, from the à la carte menu as one of your small plate selections. Craft cocktails and wines complement. RIESLING WINES
A TOUR THROUGH GERMANY & ALSACE By Tina Mulqueen
hose who have ventured to the Finger Lakes are likely familiar with New York-style Rieslings, known for their consistent quality, earthiness, and intense fruit characters. But as good as New York State grapes can be, I wanted to travel a bit farther to explore Riesling’s other famous regions: France and Germany. Considering the pandemic, actual travel was impossible, so my pal William Oben, a wine enthusiast and founder of WineBox (wineboxpdx.com), stepped in once again to cultivate an authentic tasting experience. William selected wines that aren’t hard to find. Many of them available at your local wine shop. If you do decide to travel with us to Europe vicariously, don’t neglect your pairing. As William says, “Riesling is a food wine.”
GERMANY “One of the tell-tale characteristics [of German Riesling] is the petrol smell,” explains William. Other characteristics of note include sharp acidity and honeysuckle flavors. We tried Rieslings from three well-known German producers. Von Winning Winnings Riesling “One of the things I love about Riesling is the difference in the nose and the palate,” explains William. This Von Winning Riesling is a great example. On the nose, one instantly picks up on the characteristic petrol and stone fruit. The palate is fruit-forward, beginning with apricot and zesty citrus and giving way to spice and a faint residual sugar that draws out the fruit to the finish. The wine feels a bit waxy on the tongue, thanks to the resin in the grape, which can give Rieslings an oily texture. This medium-dry wine can be paired with a light and salty snack and is available for about $18. Weingut Robert Weil - Tradition True to the region, this wine also presents with petrol on the nose. A sweeter smell marks the semi-dry wine, echoed on the palate with a candied apple flavor. Bright acidity and distinct minerality give structure to the wine and lengthen the finish. Try it with a spicy dish like Kung Pao chicken, which will balance the food’s spice with the wine’s natural sweetness. This everyday wine from the renowned producer Robert Weil can be found for about $30. Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese The first thing one notices about this Riesling from Donnhoff is the residual sugar apparent in the glass that almost gives it an effervescent look. The sugar foreshadows a dessert quality on the palate. Ripe fruit coalesces with crisp acidity for a balanced tension. There’s a good deal of complexity and nuance to this wine, which changes throughout the sip. While not overly sweet, the nectarous quality would pair well with cheese. You can find this one for about $100.
FRANCE “In Alsace, the wine’s profile is all about the vineyard,” William notes that French Riesling wines are a little weightier because of the differences in the soil. We tasted two Rieslings from Alsace. Domaine Ostertag Les Jardins Riesling With honeysuckle and white peach on the nose, this aromatic wine smells sweeter than it is. Citrus flavors and spice interplay on the palate. It doesn’t surprise me to learn that the winemaker, André Ostertag, trained in Burgundy - the terroir’s influence is distinct and expressive. Compared to its German Riesling counterparts, this wine is on the dry side but with a distinct nectar characteristic. Pair it with a salmon or a creamy sauce. You can find it for around $35. Domaine Weinbach Riesling The bouquet of this wine is floral, further emphasizing the distinction between French and German-style Rieslings. On the palate, this wine is acid-driven with complexity, marked by flavors of citrus and green apple and showcasing delicate but wellintegrated minerality. Like the Domaine Ostertag, the minerality showcases the importance of the soil to Alsatian Rieslings. The exceptionally long finish showcases lingering notes of honey and tangerine. In defiance of William’s clear food-pairing directions, I would drink this wine all by itself. You can find it for about $55. •

SOLA PASTA BAR HOME OF TRIBECA’S PREMIUM PASTA By Anne Raso
ou can never go wrong with pasta” are words that many members of the New York Lifestyles staff live by. When you aren’t sure which food you are in the mood for, pasta always satisfies as it’s a crowd-pleaser. Sola Pasta Bar on West Broadway is a glass-front modern eatery nestled on a cozy corner full of vintage pre-war buildings—but most importantly, it lives up to its positive review on Yelp. The pasta shapes are many, and they are all freshly made on the premises; if you close your eyes while eating here, you will swear you are in Southern Italy. Sola offers arguably the most authentic pasta experience in all of Manhattan—and that is saying a mouthful. When you visit Sola Pasta Bar, be sure to sit in one of the flowercovered sidewalk cottages which resemble small greenhouses. So romantic are these enclosures that they could be the ideal spot for a marriage proposal!
A GOLDEN TOUCH At Sola Pasta Bar, you can get all the classics, including Rigatoni All’Arrabbiata and Tagliatelle, in several styles (including plain butter or tomato sauce if you have a child dining with you). But you can also venture out into super adventurous territory by trying their most famous item—24K Gold Spaghetti with squid ink spaghetti, sea urchin, Calabrian chili, and 24K gold leaf. Chef/owner Esther Valcarcel reveals: “The dish was (created) for customers who request seafood pasta over a meat or vegetarian dish. Now we have regular diners who specifically request the 24k Spaghetti on a weekly basis. The secret to the dish is primarily the ingredients we use—high quality, fresh sea urchin and the special seafood bisque we prepare in-house.” Valcarcel went on to explain the beautiful presentation has made it even more popular. “We’ve seen the 24K Gold Leaf used before— but never in a pasta dish—so we thought this would be a one-ofa-kind offering and signature dish at our restaurant. Since adding it to our menu, we have been pleased with the overall positive response.” Besides the 24K Gold Spaghetti, Valcarel tells NYL that other standouts include the Tonarelli Cacio e Pepe (Pecorino Cheese & Black Pepper) and the recently added Rigatoni All’Arrabbiata (Tomato Sauce, Basil & Calabrian Chili). “We tried different recipes, different executions, different products until we reached what we feel is ‘perfection’ and unlike what you find on any other pasta menu.”
MANGIA! Valcarel’s career began as a TV Producer in Spain, but she eventually resigned to dedicate her career to the kitchen. Soon after moving to New York, she opened Sola Pasta Bar with her husband, Nicola, and their partner Simone. “I do not have any official culinary education, but since I was a child, I have always loved cooking. “Then, in the 90s, I met my Italian husband Nicola, and his mom was the one who prepared me for the role I have today. She was passionate, romantic, and creative in every dish she was preparing, from breakfast to dinner, and that’s what I carry over to the restaurant today. I add love to every dish.” 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
FROM CROQUETTES TO CANNOLO What dishes would I recommend? Their Burrata E Prugna is a heavenly soft six-ounce slab of fresh burrata served with grilled plum, rosemary, honey, and almonds. I then literally swooned as I shared an order of the Crocchette Di Pollo, three soft organic chicken croquettes resting in satisfying homemade jalapeno mayo. Next up was the aforementioned Rigatoni All’Arrabbiata, consisting of fresh tomato sauce, Calabrian chili, fresh cherry tomatoes, and fresh basil. It is a must for lovers of al dente pasta who love fresh, chunky tomato sauce with a kick. I also enjoyed the Tagliatelle Al Tartufo Nero a great selection for those who love a rich cream sauce (referred to as Parmesan Cheese Fondue on the menu) and numerous shaved slices of truffle. For dessert, Sola’s Cannolo Siciliano are legendary but don’t skip the Affogato Al Tartufo, which consists of cocoa powder-covered homemade chocolate ice cream sitting in a bath of delicious cold espresso—or perhaps try the Cheesecake Al Arancia E Pistachio (deconstructed orange cheesecake) which is undoubtedly a creative and satisfying dessert. Many Sola guests go for the $95 pasta tasting, consisting of five half portions (including the famous 24k Gold Spaghetti). This special provides more than enough pasta for two. RED
Nya, an inner-city public high school teacher, is committed to her students but desperate to give her only son, Omari, opportunities they’ll never have. When a controversial incident at his upstate private school threatens to get him expelled, Nya must confront his rage and her own choices as a parent. But will she be able to reach him before a world beyond her control pulls him away? Written by Tony Award nominee Dominique Morisseau.
Based on the original Donmar Warehouse production, this six-time Tony Award® winning new show of Oscar-nominated writer John Logan’s Red stars stage and screen actor Alfred Molina reprises his critically acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. He is joined by rising star Alfred Enoch of the U.S. television drama series How to Get Away With Murder and the Harry Potter film franchise as his assistant Ken.
INDECENT
THE PORTUGUESE KID
Indecent is inspired by the actual events surrounding the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance—a play seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture and others an act of traitorous libel. This Tony-award winner charts the history of an incendiary drama and the path of the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it.
In a new comedy starring Jason Alexander, set in Providence, Rhode Island, The Portuguese Kid focuses on the habitually widowed Atalanta, who pays a visit to her second-rate lawyer Barry Dragonetti. Intending to settle her latest husband’s affairs, this larger-than-life tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney.
DRIVING MISS DAISY
KISS ME, KATE
Starring the legendary Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones, the story follows Miss Daisy Werthan, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in mid-century Atlanta who is deemed too old to drive by her son Boolie. He hires Hoke Colburn, an African-American man, to serve as her chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them.
Taking its inspiration from Shakespeare, this hilarious romp recounts the backstage and onstage antics of two feuding romances during an out-of-town tryout for a musical adaptation of The Taming of the Shrew. This Tony winner for “Best Revival” stars Brent Barrett, Rachel York, Nancy Anderson, and Michael Berresse as the squabbling couples whose offstage disputes entangle them with a pair of song-and-dance gangsters and a pompous U.S. Army General. •

HOT ORIGINAL COMEDIES THE CHAIR Netflix Sandra Oh takes on a whole new challenge in The Chair, as she takes on the role of Chair of the English department at a prestigious (and fictitious) university, breaking barriers as she goes. Her fellow professors are a funny group, including Bob Balaban, Holland Taylor, and Jay Duplass, but being a trailblazer isn’t all fun and games, as she soon finds out. ONLY MURDERS IN THE BUILDING Hulu It took him to age 75, but Steve Martin is finally the star of his television series! He happens to also be the creator and lead writer of this offbeat comedy that follows a group of New Yorkers who live in the same building and share a fascination with true crime. Can murder be far behind? Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Nathan Lane help round out the cast of this much-anticipated new show. THE WHITE LOTUS HBO Mike White is the zany mind behind The White Lotus, the new satire set in paradise. It’s a Hawaiian resort where the staff is weird, and the guests are more peculiar with the result being played for laughs – and a few tears. Funny favorites include vacationers Steve Zahn, Jennifer Coolidge, Molly Shannon, and Connie B r i t t o n , w i t h Mu r r a y Bartlett running the resort.
REBOOTING OLD FAVORITES FANTASY ISLAND Fox Nearly fifty years after Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize made Fantasy Island a household name and TV mustsee, the fantasy drama is back, with Roselyn Sanchez taking on the role of Roarke. As the mysterious host of this luxury island resort, she›ll try to make new generations get excited when «da plane» arrives with new guests. 90 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
GOSSIP GIRL HBO Max The teens are still privileged New York private school brats, but this reboot of the series that lasted for six seasons beginning back in 2007 now has a decidedly more multicultural cast. But they are still just as in love with spreading malicious gossip using social media these days. Kristen Bell and Jordan Alexander lead this too-beautiful-for-reality cast. TURNER AND HOOCH Disney+ More than 30 years since Tom Hanks co-starred with a slobbery pooch named Hooch, their story is back, this time in a TV series with Josh Peck playing the son of Turner, Hanks’ movie character. He’s a U.S. Marshal whose partner is a huge Dogue de Bordeaux, so naturally, some messy moments happen. Reginald VelJohnson reprises his film role as David Sutton, but no sign (yet) of a Tom Hanks cameo.
CARTOON FAMILY FUN MONSTERS AT WORK Disney+ Sully and Mike are back in this series based on Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University, the much-lived Pixar animated films featuring the voices of John Goodman and Billy Crystal. They’re both on board for this ten-episode joyride filled with funny monsters voiced by Henry Winkler, Bonnie Hunt, Mindy Kaling, Aisha Tyler, and perennial Pixar favorite John Ratzenberger. WE THE PEOPLE Netflix This ten-episode series helps teach children about civics, and the responsibilities of being American citizens, told with fun songs and cool animation. Produced by Barak and Michelle Obama and featuring musical acts ranging from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Janelle Monae to Brandi Carlile, Adam Lambert, and HER and poet Amanda Gorman, We the People is a terrific teaching tool for parents and a blast for kids to watch.• JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 91

KUSAMA: COSMIC NATURE BOLTS OF JOY + EXUBERANCE By Ruth J. Katz
pon entering the New York Botanical Garden, I could spy, across the verdant landscape, incongruous, gaily colored, polka-dotted trees! Certainly, Gaea did not grace the Earth with vermillion foliage, adorned with giant, snow-white orbs. But, indeed, another earthly goddess had created this splendor: The subversive culprit is Japanese avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama, whose works always elicit squeals of delight. Her fanciful, larger-than-life vegetables, flowers, and organically shaped sculptures punctuate the Garden’s 240-acre, lush landscape with gleeful liveliness. The colossal, wrapped trees, called The Ascension of the Polka Dots, line the Garden Way and are but one of the dozen or so installations you’ll revel in experiencing. Right after the entryway, you encounter the Flower Obsession greenhouse. Visitors are invited to enter this glasshouse and plaster a coraltoned, daisy-like flower-sticker anywhere inside—furniture, windows, floor, wherever. By the time the exhibit ends this Fall, the structure will be awash in jolly, floral offerings. Kusama underscores the concepts of obliteration, infinity, and eternity with these overlapping blooms engulfing the greenhouse. Worth sharing: You will need the Gardens and Gallery Pass to do this. The ticket for the indoor spaces costs a tad more, but that is the only way to see the exhibits in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the LuEsther T. Mertz Library Building, and the Visitor Center Gallery.
PUMPKIN FAVORITES The staggeringly inventive Pumpkins Screaming About Love Beyond Infinity is an immersive experience. It is mounted in the Visitor Center Gallery and comprises a large glass cube, ablaze with acrylic, internally-lit pumpkins, against mirrored surfaces. They reflect an infinity of glowing polka-dotted spheres. It is a signature style for Kusama, who commented: “When I see pumpkins, I cannot efface the joy of them being my everything, nor the awe I hold them in.” Dozens of pumpkins, in varying sizes, slowly brighten from within with LED lights and then gently fade on a staggered timer. Another cherished pumpkin is the Dancing Pumpkin, a monumental (10 feet by 16 feet) sculpture installed on the Conservatory grounds. It is an open-sided structure, AN INSIDE LOOK constructed from urethane paint on bronze, in an audacious lemony tone, accented with various-size, ebony dots. It is Kusama’s floral artworks are equally as joyful. Inside the Palms of the built with tentacle limbs, so visitors can walk through and World Gallery in the Conservatory are several exhibits, including My Soul Blooms Forever, a garden (planted in a small pond under the dome), around it, all the while smiling, I am certain. which features colossal polka-dotted flowers, constructed from stainless steel and painted in dramatically vivid colors. Adjacent to the dome is Starry Pumpkin, an enchanting mosaic sculpture that is counterpoint to the dashing flowers. It is constructed from fiberglass-reinforced plastic and resin, covered in mosaics, in flickering gold and scarlet. It is secreted in a mini-garden meadow, which was created by the Garden’s horticulturalists. Kusama speaks of her youth, recounting, “I parted a row of zinnias and reached in to pluck the pumpkin from its vine. It immediately began speaking to me in a most animated manner.” To fashion the perfect environment for this luminescent work, the staff recreated the meadow of Kusama’s memory; the sculpture emerges triumphantly from wildflowers, grasses, and willows: The visitor experiences this pumpkin as the artist did. There is a lively exhibition of painted-metal mammoth flowers in the nearby Conservatory Courtyard Hardy Pool, the exuberantly colored and highly patterned sculpture, Hymn of Life—Tulips. Additionally, do not miss the massive, single blossom, I Want to Fly the Universe and the Narcissus Garden. On display in the Library Building are sketches, paintings, and additional sculptures, including the stunning Life 2015. This jubilant exhibit will be something you’ll remember from Life 2021! For more information on Kusama: Cosmic Nature, visit nybg.org. The exhibit continues through October 31st; reservations are a must. •

SUMMER SIZZLERS
BOOKS TO KEEP YOU COOL IN THIS SEASON By Bailey Beckett
his summer is expected to be a record travel season, as millions of people head to the beach, or far away destinations. Here, our take on thrillers, mysteries and suspense novels that will guarantee to take you out of your world. TRIANGLE OF TREASON (Fitzrovia Press) Bob Richards A taut WW2 thriller with a surprise setting is at the heart of Bob Richards’ new novel Triangle of Treason, which reveals the strategic importance of Bermuda for the Allies during the war. The book’s page-turning stories of high stakes espionage—its main character is a retired British Captain turned Hitler spy—provides summer escapism with more than a splash of history lesson. And there’s no one better to tell it than author Richards, a native of Bermuda who rose to become the country’s Minister of Finance. Trading a spread sheet for a hard cover, Richards proves he knows the formula for crafting a compelling story as well. Bob Richards: “I always loved boats. I grew up hearing endless stories from my parents about the war. So, I melded these two elements into a fictional story during that era involving my favorite subjects: ferries, submarines, and WW2 history. I hope the takeaway is how unique Bermuda really is, being shaped from inception back in the 1600’s, and by the intersection of the three elements: the British, the American and the Caribbean.”
THE PALE TIGER (Echo Point Books & Media, LLC) Mike Harrison A crash at sea between American and Chinese warships unleashes a global web of intrigue, espionage, conspiracy and run up to war as the superpowers prepare for battle in the Pacific. A geo-political thriller, The Pale Tiger is eerie prescient to modern headlines, and uses those rising tensions as the starting point to a plot brimming with unexpected twists and turns, danger, suspense and the unthinkable. It’s not all guns and daggers, either, as Harrison—a former finance executive and lawyer—shows that wars are no longer fought just on the battlefield but through markets, tech, and back-channel intelligence. Mike Harrison: “I wanted to bring these characters to life—and against the backdrop of a geopolitical crisis that’s real and relevant. How America deals with the rise of China is the Great Power challenge of the 21st century and should be on all our minds. I was also keen to stretch the characters, to really test them, giving them scope to fail or rise to the challenges. The locations are also characters, especially Hong Kong and London.”
IN RED WEATHER (Didier Millet) Daniel Cameron A real-life spy-thriller featuring the unlikeliest of moles: Daniel Cameron, one of classical music’s most respected PR men. In a past life, he was a case officer for the CIA during the Vietnam era, working from Southeast Asia to thwart efforts by the Viet Cong and the race for influence and control by Russia and China. Cameron recalls in stunning detail plots to steal guidance systems, sabotage missiles and plots to overthrow governments, all the while painting a vivid picture of living in the region and falling in love with its people and culture. Daniel Cameron: “It is an unexpectedly lyrical yet down-to-earth portrayal of growing up in the ‘30s and ‘40s in New York; a look into the dangerous and often tedious game of spying, replete with human mistakes, derring-do, and betrayal; and often it’s a literary flight-of-fancy about people’s inner choices and peculiarities. It’s also a book about the ineffable underlying cultural, social, and religious customs of Java. Despite being the world’s largest Muslim country, Indonesia is still imbued with a pre-Islamic pantheism. Many decisions—personal and political—are subject to this mystical force.” • JULY/AUGUST 2021 | NEW YORK LIFESTYLES MAGAZINE | 93

In a traditionally male-dominated industry, these entrepreneurs are making waves in New York—and nationwide. MAREN HOSMER MAREN HOSMER has over four decades of experience in the wine industry. She co-owns Hosmer Estate Winery with her husband, Cameron in the Finger Lakes. Together, they’ve built a legacy of sustainable farming. Their son, Tim, heads up vineyard operations. His leadership is complemented by a fem-forward team—with many pivotal leadership roles held by dynamic women. COLLEEN HARDY
KERITH L. OVERSTREET
COLLEEN HARDY is an international wine maven. She and her husband founded Living Roots & Co. in 2016, and split their time between their two wineries— Upstate New York (Colleen’s hometown) and South Australia (Sebastian’s hometown). The Finger Lakes winery is celebrated for its rich white and sparkling. With recognition in New York Wines, Wine Spectator, and Forbes, Hardy and husband remain grounded and humble—with an elegant, approachable vibe at their tasting room in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts. Whether you’re looking for an educative sip or one of their curated wine dinners, Living Roots is a vine-totable gem. Info: livingrootswine.com.
KERITH L. OVERSTREET is a one-woman operation and the force behind Bruliam Wines. Her Dad promised her that she could then do whatever her heart desired if she completed medical school. Her heart was drawn to wine, so she completed medical school at the University of Rochester—and residency and fellowships at UCSD before enrolling at UC Davis to study enology. “I stepped onto the crush pad that first harvest and fell in love with winemaking’s magical elixir of science, artistry, microbiology, tradition, culture, and history,” she says.
98 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021
Overstreet—even with her limitless abilities—is quick to shine a light on the important role that her family’s support has played. She believes women bring balance to their wines. As she says, “Every day we women winemakers balance families, passions, creativity, and dedication with our professional craft. And that balance is different for every wine, encompassing varietal, tannins, oak, acid, and flavors.” Wine connoisseurs agree. Info: bruliamwines.com.
SHANNON O’SHAUGHNESSY SHANNON O’SHAUGHNESSY is an avid pilot that creates the flightpath for her 2016 launched wine label, Aileron. Her roots run deep. Decades ago, she helped her family launch O’Shaughnessy Wine Estate. “I’ve been fortunate to have started my career in the wine industry surrounded by inspiring women who owned successful wineries, including my mother, who founded O’Shaughnessy Estate Winery in the late 1990s. Because of those pioneering and successful female vintners, I knew I could do it on my own.” Now O’Shaughnessy runs the show with an agile team of wine crafters, vineyard operations experts, and marketers. O’Shaughnessy and the team are looking to connect with adventure enthusiasts through tastings and unique wine experiences. This comes as no surprise since O’Shaughnessy lives by example through her piloting adventures. An Aileron, you see, is a trailing edge on an airplane wing. It’s used for balance, she remarks. “To navigate the flight path of life, we all need an Aileron. It’s the little wing that helps steer us in the direction we want to go, to explore further and seek true happiness.” Info: aileronestates.com.
JULIE ADAMS
RACHEL MARTIN
JULIE ADAMS has a sweet gig as CEO of Oliver Winery—one of the 30 most prominent wineries in the U.S., which also features a fruit-forward collection of top-rated wines. On the importance of shining a light on women in the wine industry, Adams feels that “there are so many phenomenal women in our industry making great strides. They don’t get near enough credit.” Adams goes on to say, “It’s important for women to empower and to support one another, and the first step is recognizing them and the amazing wineries they are leading.” Info: oliverwinery.com.
RACHEL MARTIN studied at The University of Bordeaux’s School of Enology and built her Oceano Wines from scratch. Spanish Springs Vineyard—her Chardonnay grape source—is arguably the closest vineyard to the ocean. It sits below the fog line in California—south of San Luis Obispo, owned by Henry Warshaw. She visited there in 2016, by Warshaw’s invitation, and immediately made a verbal contract for six tons of Chardonnay (later adding Pinot Noir). Martin—along with the industry as a whole—is constantly navigating the environmental challenges of wine growing. She likes to pair her “2018 Chardonnay with briny oysters from the northeastern states of New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine.” On her website, she offers a variety of seafoodcentric recipes and pairings, “such as langoustines and Arctic char, with lower tannin, high acid red wines like our Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo from the Langhe region of Italy.” Info: oceanowines.com. •

MY NEW YORK STORY RICHARD PERRY, MUSIC PRODUCER By Harry Brads
nyone who feels connected to the best music of the last fifty years (who doesn’t?) will revel in this uniquely American success story. Even at a young age, Richard Perry knew that his destiny was to bring music into people’s lives. Born in Brooklyn, Richard Perry came to rock music young. In 1955, at the age of 12, he attended the first of Alan Freed’s live rock shows at the Paramount Theatre. Perry began his career in rock music as a local performer during his adolescence. Then after graduating college in 1960, he did some songwriting and began launching his career as a music producer with early projects with Captain Beefheart and Fats Domino.
CLASSIC POP And so, a start of a legendary career. As one of the most successful producers in music history, Perry has produced classic albums and singles with such legendary artists as Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, The Pointer Sisters, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, Tina Turner, and the list goes on. In his candid memoir, Cloud Nine: Memoirs of a Record Producer, Perry transports us through his eventful life, from his childhood in Brooklyn, where he played in bands, starred in musicals, and witnessed the birth of rock ‘n’ roll; through his sometimes rocky but always thrilling climb up the music-business ladder; and finally, into the studios and personal lives of the many superstars who provide our most enduring soundtrack. 100 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | JULY/AUGUST 2021

What he couldn’t have dreamed was that his meteoric rise through the ranks of the music business would result in successful, ground-breaking, and award-winning collaborations. The winner of a Special Merit Award from the Grammys has produced hits for legendary performers, all of whom trusted him to shape the sound that made them great. While he had success for many years, “Richard Perry would become the most renowned producer in the field during the ’70s, and the array of albums with which he was associated, made his name synonymous with success”, said Bruce Eder of All Music Guide. In 1970 Perry produced Barbra Streisand’s Stoney End LP. Another music legend, Clive Davis, then president of Columbia Records, was instrumental in putting the two together. He believed that Barbra would greatly benefit from the collaboration, and he was right. His last album with Streisand was Live Concert At The Forum, for which she received a Grammy Award nomination. Cloud Nine Richard Perry
Richard Perry, Harry Nilsson
ALWAYS BROOKLYN While producing for some of the top musical acts of the ’80s, including Julio Iglesias and Willie Nelson, Perry helped establish a new theater at his prep school of eight years, Brooklyn’s Poly Prep. “I was deeply honored that this state-ofthe-art facility not only bears his name but also has become an important cultural resource for the community,” said Perry. Then 1992 brought Perry into the studio to do an album with Ray Charles. Released the following year, My World produced the first top 10 solo single hit Charles has had in over 25 years, “A Song For You,” the classic Leon Russell composition. In addition, it earned Charles the 1994 Grammy Award for Best R&B Male Vocal Performance. Stephen Holden of Rolling Stone Magazine touted My World as “an album that brings the sixty-two-year-old father of modern soul back. Produced by Richard Perry, who twenty years ago, masterminded the entries by Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, and Harry Nilsson into the pop mainstream, My World takes the sound of Charles’ best ’60s records. It discreetly updates it by underlining the swelling gospel choruses with crisp, technoimproved beats.” In 1995, Perry created an album for The Temptations. It contained ten of the most memorable love songs recorded with modern R&B arrangements and enhanced by The Temptations’ exquisite vocal interpretations. Andrew Hamilton of All Music Guide said, “Richard Perry outdid himself with this production; he expertly captured the essence of the Temptations. Their signature vocal blend is emphasized at every turn, and why not? It’s what brought throngs of fans into their fold in the first place. He didn’t concentrate on one lead singer, like others have in the past. The Temptations were initially marketed as a group of five outstanding lead singers, and that’s what you get with this excellent collection.” Although Perry has had many successes, he has had to overcome many adversities. After contracting polio at the age of twelve, he wasn’t expected to walk again. But Perry proved doctors wrong by excelling as a high jumper on his track and field team. Forty-eight years later, in 2003, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and even though there is no known cure, he continued to work and write. Throughout his story, Perry remains entertaining and funloving company, always awed by his proximity to greatness and boundlessly enthusiastic about his contributions to the most beloved art form. TIME OUT WITH… WALTER STERNLIEB, ARTIST By Harry Brads
eet modern American artist and designer Walter Sternlieb, who has opened the hottest new gallery in the Hamptons. Located at 60 Jobs Lane in Southampton, A is for Art is part of the Village’s strong art legacy, backed by curated collaborations in the community. A is for Art brings to life the prolific vision of Walter Sternlieb, who is known on the East End as a respected designer, builder, woodworker, and master craftsman. Now his latest title as an industrial artist will only further plant his applaudable achievements. His charismatic work on display was brought forth by ingenuity and creativity. “I woke up one morning with this idea of a 3-dimensional flag, made a prototype of it, then built it, painted it, and hung it,” states Walter. The specific vision of the then novice artist led to a series that includes his iconic pieces, The Staircase, and 5 Hearts. Eventually, he established a professional portfolio that was so large it took up the entire wall space in his home where he displayed pieces. The colorful collection impressed visiting friends and fans and eventually led to opening a gallery to showcase his work.
Walter Sternlieb
A POSITIVE SIGN “I knew there was a property on Jobs Lane and decided to rent it,” he goes on about the inspiration to open his place. “The interior was very run down, and I thought I could have an art gallery. But shabby-chic just wasn’t me. So, we went in and cleaned it up. Then, we started hanging my work and the works of some of my friends. In a short period, I was getting a good response to my work.” Walter’s expressive 3-dimensional paintings encompass powerful visions full of rich color and bold design. The bright shapes are pops of color that bring bliss to anyone who uses them as part of a home or office space design.

The dazzling and virtuosic collection comes from a special place in Walter’s personal history that many can relate to and why his artwork stands out as a popular choice to art collectors. Even growing up in his native New York, art touched Walter’s young life, and he remembers, “As a child, my parents took me to museums and historic sites. Of course, I didn’t understand the purpose of all of it. But I was fortunate that they took me to all these places. It helped me in what I do today. All the things that I saw, and I have done in the past have made me what I am today.” For more information on Walter Sternlieb and A is for Art, visit aisforart.us. •
