THE WARM DAYS OF SUMMER
Welcome to Summer and our special July/August issue! One thing I’ve learned this year is that slowing down isn’t something to fear. It’s something to embrace. Rushing through your life is pointless. So, now that Summer is in full swing, the last thing I don’t need is a rushed life.
What better place to start off these warm days than right here in the city. Living in the Big Apple, we sometimes overlook what we already have. Dining alfresco at our favorite restaurants, enjoying leisurely strolls in Central Park, and appreciating a bit of culture at a popular exhibit at one of our iconic museums.
With Summer, thoughts of travel come to mind. Our editorial team covers some of the best ways to relax and soak in the sunshine. Hop in your car and take a trip to the Jersey Shore. You won’t be disappointed. Be sure to spend some enjoyable time at the newly opened Big Little Nine which will make anyone feel like a champion! In our interview with Jack Morey, who helped bring this to fruition, he tells the inspiration and what it took to make this the latest for the Morey Family. The new 9-hole golf course is in Cape May, NJ and not too far away from Morey’s Piers, the decades-old amusement/water park which has become a Wildwood tradition.
Or if you are headed to the East End of Long Island, we invite you to read our guide to dining in the Hamptons. This year, the Hamptons has welcomed new restaurants along with some old favorites with menus to satisfy any palate. It’s the place to see and be seen.
Perhaps an escape to Europe is on your list. If so, get your passports ready for the best which includes London, the French Riviera, Istanbul or beyond. Much adventure awaits to make new memories with family and friends.
So, as we enjoy the hot, sunny days, think about this time to reimagine your life. Have a wonderful Summer…and see you in September!

THE HAPPIEST GOLF COURSE ON EARTH!
By Patricia Canole |Nine-hole golf courses have a long history in the United States and today are becoming as popular as their 18-hole big brother. As land and resources continue to shrink, green space and opportunities for recreation near homes and workplaces in densely populated areas have become more coveted. In fact, in many of the metro areas, 9-hole courses serve as popular havens for both residents and visitors.
Big Little Nine (originally Laguna Oaks) is a newlyintroduced par-three course that encourages both professional and casual golfers to go outdoors to have the time of their lives. Jack Morey sat down with New York Lifestyles Magazine to explain his family’s expansion from Morey’s Piers and Resorts in the Wildwoods to the new golf course located 10 minutes away in Cape May, NJ.
THE START OF SOMETHING GOOD
“My dad’s first business partner was a gentleman by the name of Fred Langford, a super innovator, architect, and dreamer. His final passion project was this one,” said Jack. Langford was a legend in the architecture and entertainment world, whose projects ranged from waterpark slides to designing concrete formwork for the National Parliament building in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Described as always being ahead of his time, Langford wanted to make Laguna Oaks a very special place. Fred, who grew up in Cape May, pursued his many passions that led him around the world. His specialty was designing architectural formwork that was used for both fiberglass and concrete.
Early in his career, he met up with his childhood friend and first business partner, Wilbert C. Morey, who was embarking on a new mini-waterpark concept that would one day be known as Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, NJ. Fred designed the stair tower leading to the top of the waterslides and became so fascinated with this new industry that he immediately started thinking about how to do it better. He soon converted his formal training in concrete formwork design into designing formwork for a new version of fiberglass waterslides. His new company was named Surf Coaster and his slides were built on six continents. His impact in the amusement industry led to being inducted into the Amusement Hall of Fame.
Just like us, we’re excited about everyone getting to know and appreciate golf...
COMPLETING A DREAM
Fred’s final passion project was the design of Laguna Oaks golf course. You’ll see his imprint with the concrete retaining walls around the lakes; he both designed and built the forms. With Fred’s passing late last year, it was then that the Morey Family continued the passion Fred had started. “It’s now complete and open,” says Jack, “and I’m proud to have helped Fred achieve his dream.”
Big Little Nine is open seven days a week and accepts reservations for tee times—just in time for families to enjoy the sun and warmth of the Jersey Shore. Jack mentioned that the signature holes include the 7th island green hole where a beautiful weeping willow tree and memorial sits proudly in remembrance of Fred Langford. At the 9th hole, a Happy Face is carved out in the sand traps. He also reassures us that there are plenty of instructors available for those who need tips and lessons.
“Just like us, we’re excited about everyone getting to know and appreciate golf,” he said. Always ready to please visitors, Jack described how they have a complete Clubhouse with all the amenities for a golfer, plus a cool collection of Big Little Nine merchandise. There’s also the Cup of Bliss on Green, a café offering specialty coffees and gourmet hot dogs.
For those who have booked reservations in any one of their four hotels (Pan American, Port Royal, Starlux Boutique, and Blue Palms) at their Wildwood location—or partners including ICONA Resorts—guests will receive a 15 percent discount at Big Little Nine. Jack added that the Morey Family is enthusiastic to welcome Big Little Nine to their collection of entertainment and resort properties.
“I’m certain that once you experience the 9-hole course’s uniqueness and beauty, you will be thrilled whether you’re a novice or a pro.” Jack mentioned more surprises are in the planning stages for the future. Stay tuned.

MEET THE MOREY FAMILY
In 1969, the Morey name was not recognized as it is today. If anything, their business in hotels and motels would have been associated with a mention, if known at all. But then, brothers Will and Bill Morey noticed something new in modern recreation while at a shopping center in Florida. Amazed by the crowd’s reaction to a giant slide, the pair surmised it could be popular at their home in New Jersey. So, after acquiring a single 70’ strip of beach real estate in North Wildwood, the Wipe Out slide was built and became a summer sensation. That was the beginning.
During the 1970s, several amusement piers decorated Wildwood’s beachfront. But those Morey upstarts were most likely not considered to be any competition. Expanding the pier around the slide, the Morey brothers added a mix of rides to keep visitors nearby for extended periods. They appealed to both families and thrill-seekers with offerings for both. Soon the pier, now known as Morey’s Surfside Pier, was the hot ticket in town.
In the following decades, the beachfront underwent some changes. Many amusement piers were closed due to misfortune or a decrease in popularity. But the two brothers invested in roller coasters, a giant Ferris wheel, and more big rides followed. The brothers kept their properties relevant. More rides and success followed.
Then in 1998 with Will Sr.’s passing, 2nd generation brothers, Will Jr. and Jack, assume the business and continue today. Along the way, Wildwood has become a year-round destination, admittedly with the help of the Morey Family.
Today, the piers are thriving. Three amusement piers (Surfside, Mariners and Adventure) as well as two beachfront water parks (Ocean Oasis and Raging Waters) afford more than 100 rides and attractions.
For over 50 years, the Morey Family have added more bells and whistles but remains true to their mission: to provide a spectacular family recreational experience in an exceptionally safe, clean, friendly, and unique environment. --PC
CHEF MATT ABDOO
BEHIND HIS MICHELIN-STAR MENU
By Bailey Beckett | Photos by Kim MyersExecutive Chef Matt Abdoo has been obsessed with culinary perfection since childhood. He has turned his lifetime passion into a career arc spanning pastry, fine dining, and now award-winning barbecue, putting New York City on the map in the highly competitive field long dominated by the South. As co-owner of Pig Beach Barbecue, Abdoo has elevated the art of barbecue without sacrificing any of the delicious and casual decadence that defines the cuisine. Through his numerous television appearances, notably on the Today Show, Abdoo built a reputation as a straight-talking chef who de-mystifies cooking and empowers everyone to step into the kitchen
“There are no bad cooks; they are just inexperienced’” says Abdoo. “Anybody can learn to do it. It just takes time and practice. Seasoning is critical to making everything taste good. What differentiates home cooks from professional chefs is that we understand how flavors interact. To elevate a dish, we maximize flavor profiles like salt, sweet, acids, sour, and bitter. Professional chefs put more salt on things, which home cooks avoid. Don’t be scared, but you must taste it along the way. You can always add it but cannot remove it once it’s in your cooking.”
FOOD IS LOVE
Abdoo shares, “I love simple food. It doesn’t have to be complex to be delicious. When I go out to a restaurant of my choosing, I am on the quest for the best pizza, amazing juicy burger, or buffalo wings, but it has to be spectacular. My perfect snack is a mouth-watering grilled cheese consisting of beautiful white bread with a great crust because the crunch is everything. Layer in multiple pieces of cheese; I prefer cheddar, American, and gruyere, then go heavy on the butter.”
Growing up in upstate Utica, Abdoo comes from a large family, half Italian and half Lebanese, both cultures with rich culinary roots. He started rolling meatballs with his grandmother, who used to say, “Food is the best representation of love.” Before long, Abdoo was preparing cheesecakes and baking enthusiastically, eventually landing a bakery job in high school. But, he says, “I knew I wanted to be a chef when the Food Network became popular in the early nineties. I always watched cooking shows if I was home sick from school.”
He loved watching Yan Can Cook and the Galloping Gourmet, and for him Justin Wilson, Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, and Lidia Bastianich were superstars. They were living his dream to get people excited about food and the art of crafting it.
He fully credits his parents for their love and support of him in pursuing his dreams while simultaneously impressing upon him the importance of education. He attended the Culinary Institute of America, and his skills landed him a series of internships before working his way into New York City fine dining, taking a position at the esteemed Del Posto. While there, he met Rob Shawger, his now business partner, who turned Abdoo on to the possibility of taking a route toward barbecue. They began entering and winning several barbecue competitions around New York City and Long Island. Finally, Shawger suggested that they enter Memphis in May, one of the biggest barbecue competitions in the country and one that gives the winners instant credibility. “Our initial year, we won first place in poultry and second place in the whole hog, which the South has always dominated, says Abdoo. “When we won, the crowd went silent to hear that a team from New York City had placed first. That didn’t just happen. In 2015 we opened Pig Beach as a pop-up in Brooklyn. The reception was overwhelming, and we were invited back in 2016 when I left Del Posto to focus on launching Pig Beach permanently. The business has grown to three locations, with a new one in Louisville slated to open just before the Kentucky Derby in May.
EVERYONE CAN COOK
Abdoo champions everyone to try their hand at cooking and says that the essential ingredients in anyone’s kitchen are high-quality extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and kosher salt. “Growing up constantly around Italian cuisine, I always have great olive oil on hand—some to cook with and others as a finishing oil.”
The chef told us that “balsamic vinegars range in price. The best come from Modena, Italy. They add incredible flavor to even the simplest dish. Kosher salt to cook with and Maldon salt for just the right finish. Also, the most important tip for preparing meats is to use a digital thermometer to determine when your meat has reached the right temperature for your desired outcome.”
Take heed.

MICHAEL M C FALL
LEADING THE WAY TO CREATING NEW BUSINESS
By Jenna GuarneriIn today’s business world, leaders need to be more than just good at their jobs—they need to build and lead teams, develop strategies, and create a positive work environment. In a world where businesses are increasingly focused on shareholder profits, it can be challenging to find companies that look beyond that; however, a growing number of entrepreneurs are leading the way in creating businesses committed to positively impacting the people they serve. Creating a work environment where employees can thrive, and grow is becoming a more customary practice.
Michael McFall is one such entrepreneur. He is the Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Biggby® Coffee, a national coffee franchise with over 350 locations, and author of the Inc. original imprints Grow (2023) and Grind (2019). Starting as a barista at Biggby® Coffee, McFall was captivated by the joy he brought customers with each cup he brewed. That experience instilled a deep appreciation for cultivating trusting and healthy relationships, shaping his approach to business success.
SHAPING HIS OUTLOOK
With financial resources, a capable team, and ample experience, successful entrepreneurs bear the responsibility to support others and make a lasting difference—leaders should be committed to creating workplaces where employees are valued and supported and where customers can feel good about doing business with a company that is making a positive impact.
To implement these principles into their entrepreneurial experiences, McFall advises individuals to explore their purpose deeply. “What meaningful challenge are you going to take on in the world as an entrepreneur and as an organization?” he asks. “It has to be something you care deeply about.”
Identifying meaningful challenges that align with core values allows leaders to engage the world more powerfully. Being locked into their purpose, entrepreneurs and their organizations can create tremendous results driven by genuine passion and dedication—when you have a strong sense of purpose, it motivates you to persevere. It also helps to make decisions that are aligned with your values.
A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS
Leaders play a critical role in creating sustainable businesses for the future. Their primary role, and challenge, is to figure out what their organization needs from them at any moment. “As you grow, this role transitions; you are no longer doing, you are facilitating an environment for others to thrive and take on the challenges your company faces.” Leaders must adapt to change and create a culture where everyone feels valued and supported. They also need to be able to build relationships with their stakeholders.
McFall also strongly advocates for Stakeholder Capitalism, a business model that recognizes that all stakeholders, employees, customers, the environment, the community, shareholders, and vendors play a role in the organization’s success. He believes that businesses should be more than just profit machines; they should be responsible stewards of the communities in which they operate. This model is more sustainable and profitable overall.
One key concept McFall highlights in his book Grow: Take Your Business from Chaos to Calm is the importance of leaders doing due diligence on themselves. Leaders can avoid unintended consequences and leverage their strengths by studying and understanding their impact on the organization and its members. Additionally, leaders must embrace becoming irrelevant as their businesses thrive. By allowing competent teams to lead, leaders gain more options, focus on their legacy, and have a more significant impact on the world.
To scale and become a significant enterprise, entrepreneurs must acknowledge their pivotal role in their organization’s success. McFall hopes readers will embrace the idea that “the company of tomorrow will be human-centered and focused on the health and development of their people,” nurturing and supporting the growth of their people to foster a vibrant and dynamic organization.
As McFall ventures into his third book, he envisions a call to action for successful entrepreneurs. With success comes responsibility, and he urges entrepreneurs to use their resources, experience, and connections to support others and improve the human condition. Leaving a powerful legacy that positively impacts the world becomes the ultimate goal that all stakeholders can be proud of.

THE GENESIS ELECTRIFIED G70
READY FOR YOUR FIRST EV?
By Jenny PetersAs a fan of Genesis, the luxury marquee of Hyundai, getting the chance to test drive the company’s new all-electric SUV seemed like a grand idea. The 2023 Electrified GV70 is a compact SUV, perfect for city driving, with all the sleek good looks and interior comfort we’ve expected from Genesis.
If you’ve enjoyed riding in the gas-powered GV70, you’ll find the overall experience like the electrified version. Beyond the apparent engine that runs on a charge, not gasoline, another difference is the car’s front grill, with a slightly different shape that allows plug-in from the front. Add 20-inch alloy wheels, remove the unnecessary exhaust pipes at the rear, and get a GV70 that isn’t far off its gasswilling cousin.
INSIDE COMFORT
Inside, comfort is king, with seriously nice leather seats and trim, an ultra-modern instrument panel, a large general display screen for mapping, music, parking assistance, etc., and an overall feel of quiet luxury. This Electrified GV70 is so subtle and sleek that you’ll find yourself going 90 miles an hour without feeling the thrust via its 320kw motor, which puts out the equivalent of 429 hp. It even has a “BOOST” button on the steering wheel, which blasts it forward at 483 hp output 10 seconds of acceleration in times of need for quick speed.
But therein lies the rub of this all-electric vehicle. Using that BOOST button and putting the car through its high-speed paces (which it responds to nimbly) eats up electricity at a fast rate, meaning that you can drive fast for a little while, and then the fun is over, as you’ll be stopping to recharge for large chunks of time. With an estimated range of only 236 miles on a single full charge (with the operative word being full), the Genesis Electrified GV70 is not designed for a real road trip. It is terrific for driving around town, running errands, and toting the kids back and forth.
SEARCH & CHARGE
You’ll never see your charge at 100 percent unless you have a charger in your garage. Stopping at an EV charging station on the road is quite an experience. On our road trip of about 420 miles, here are the things we discovered. First, you’ll need to plan where public charging stations are available. One company, Electrify America, has a deal with Genesis, which means that for the first three years, your 30-minute charges are free. So that’s the system you’ll look for (Tesla charging stations will not work on a Genesis).
Next, you’ll discover that 30 minutes usually charges the vehicle to 80 percent (about a 180-mile range in the Genesis), nowhere near that vehicle’s full 236-mile charge. Once an electric car reaches 80 percent via fast charging, the charging rate plummets, and it will take another 30 minutes or more to get that last 20 percent.
Adding insult to the already time-sucking charging ritual are the broken charging stations. And if you drive just a little too fast, you’ll watch your precious charged miles sink to zero at a fast rate. So, on our test road trip of 420 miles, across that distance in a place known for a good infrastructure of charging stations, the trip took ten hours going and eight hours returning. That same trip in a gas-powered or hybrid vehicle takes at least six hours.
Of course, the electricity cost substantially less than gasoline, but when in a line of seven vehicles waiting for one of four charging stations to open, without enough charge to get anywhere else for a jolt of electricity, that gas pump starts to look enticing. We waited at one spot for over 40 minutes to get to the plug, then added another 30 minutes to charge up.
The bottom line is that electric vehicles like the 2023 Electrified GV70 have a lot going for them if you’re stuck near home. However, they’ve still got quite a way to go before a real American road trip is a viable option to take them on—unless you’ve got all the time in the world to hang out at EV charging stations!

FRENCH RIVIERA RENAISSANCE
THE ULTIMATE DESTINATION
By Irvina LewThe ‘Côte d’Azur’ is considered the most beautiful part of France and its second most popular tourist destination, after Paris. In 1990, I was captivated as my first art-inspired flight to the Riviera descended into Nice-Côte d’Azur airport, the snow-capped Alps, the megayacht-strewn Mediterranean, the pool-studded landscape, and the long curve of beach along the Promenade des Anglais, in Nice. I’d found my happy place! I still frequent Bonnard, Chagall, Matisse, and Picasso museums a dozen trips later. Beyond the topography and food, what lures me back is the French art de vivre: the gorgeous produce at the marché; the exquisite shop windows; the extraordinary flowers, inside and out; and the food—whether meals are served on the sand, the terrace, or the street.
CANNES DO
Each May, the Cannes Film Festival attracts celebrities to the famous, red carpet-covered steps at The Palais des Festivals. Tourists attracted to this lively and lovely, walkable city pose for pictures there all year long. Visit the nearby church, Notre Dame-de-Bon-Voyage. A few nights at one of the elegant hotels on Boulevard de la Croisette—the city’s vast, tree-lined waterfront promenade— lined with designer boutiques and grand palace hotels facing private beach clubs. Others stay on or near the less-costly Rue d’Antibes, which runs parallel and is connected by tiny, café-studded streets. Most flock to the Vieux (Old) Port, the Hotel de Ville, c. 1876, and the weekend Marché Brocante (flea market). The daily market, Marché Forville, is located footsteps away, on the medieval, café-lined hillside, in Le Suquet, the former fishing village, where Le Maschou serves a simple fixed-price grilled meal that features an impressive panier (basket) of beautifully-presented, fresh, raw, vegetables.
STAY
Carlton Cannes A Regent Hotel The Carlton Cannes, the first Grande Dame hotel to début on La Croisette in 1913, has just reopened after a more than four-year restoration—and the dramatic results are divine. Architect Richard Lavelle retained the iconic twin domes and interior curvilinear staircases; he transformed a parking lot into a 215,000 square foot, landscaped interior garden with an infinity pool, cabanas, and a light-filled entry to a lower level. Lavelle added two extensions with 37 residences and created a new Le C-Club Fitness & Spa (with a full-size boxing ring and Dr. Burgener products). French designer Tristan Auer stripped eight layers of paint off columns in the vaulted lobby to reveal original marble and added Venini chandeliers. The contemporary décor extends to airy seafront rooms colored in neutral shades and white. We lunched elegantly, facing the sea, at Riviera Restaurant, where cream-colored balustrades separate the terrace from La Croisette.
MONACO DO
Monaco was a struggling agricultural principality in 1863 when The Monte Carlo Société de Bains de Mer (SBM) was created to lure wealthy gamblers. Architects transformed an olive and lemon groove-studded plateau above the sea into the Belle Époque-style Casino de Monte Carlo and the lavish Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo. Since 1879, when the Garnier-designed Opera de Monte-Carlo opened, Monaco has been the social center; it continues to lure international visitors to its cultural and sporting events—including the Grand Prix de Monaco—and its famous sights: the Prince’s Palace and the Oceanographic Museum. Along with multiple restaurants and hotels, SBM operates one of the world’s most impressive spas: the four-level, 75,000-square foot Thermes Marins Monte Carlo specializes in thalasso, or sea water therapies, and is linked to both Hôtel de Paris and Hôtel Hermitage, via an underground corridor. At l’Hirondelle, adjacent to the grand indoor pool, healthful lunch is served indoors and on the terrace; here, guests receive meals under silver cloches (domes), which are lifted in unison whether clad in bathrobes or business dress.
BEST STAY
Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo Guests enter under its distinctive porte cochère to enter its recently-updated lobby, which retains its high, arched ceilings, grand chandeliers, and a marble colonnade. The four-year, $280 million facelift completed in 2019 made hightech improvements and added a 7,200-square-foot, tree-studded inner garden. A statue of King Louis XV welcomes guests outside Le Louis XV Alain Ducasse, where Chef Ducasse earned his first Michelin three-star award, the first ever granted to a hotel-restaurant. This year, Michelin presented the new Head Chef, Emmanuel Pilont three stars, and Restaurant Manager Claire Sonnet with a prestigious Service Award. Across the lobby, Le Bar Americain serves light fare facing the casino and offers live music; on the 8th floor, Le Grill, a Michelin-one-star restaurant, overlooks the entire port.
ANTIBES DO
Antibes, mid-way between Nice and Cannes, dates to the 5th century B.C. when the Greeks called it: Antipolis. The starshaped Fort Carré once provided protection and overlooks the modern, yacht-filled Port Vauban marina. Along the cobblestone streets in the Vieille Ville (Old Town), the daily market, Marché Provencal, offers superb produce and artisanal products across from the Cathedral Nôtre-Dame and the Musée Picasso In 1946, Picasso lived in the 12th century, sand-colored Château Grimaldi built atop a Roman fort for six months and donated his prolific output—23 paintings and 44 drawings—to the municipality. Today, the seafront museum also displays his ceramics and art gifted by his second wife, Jacqueline Roque Picasso.
STAY
Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc The fabled Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, a Napoleon III-style palace hotel, has lured the elite to this 22-acre, Aleppo pine-studded park since the 1870s. In 2022, massive renovations and redecoration upgraded the chateau. From here, a walking path leads to a waterfront pavilion housing seaside rooms, the rooftop Eden-Roc Lounge, and two restaurants: the more casual Eden-Roc Grill, adjacent to the pool deck and, above it, the gastronomic Eden-Roc Restaurant. The dining terraces overlook the extraordinary infinity seawater pool hollowed out of basalt rocks, circus-like trapezes high above the sea, and a dock for watercraft and the Mediterranean. In April 2023, the new Dior Spa Eden-Roc debuted within a stand-alone building adjacent to a 100-year-old rose garden dedicated to Queen Elizabeth II. The spa features pale woods, marble, distinctly Dior signature Toile du Jouy fabrics, all-onyx hydrotherapy, and treatment rooms. Services also occur in the Garden Gazebo and two luxe cabanas near the sea.
SAINT TROPEZ DO
Outdoor cafés face mega-yachts docked portside in this petit, pastelcolored, fairy-tale village. The port is also home to the minuscule, Musée de l’Annonciade, a former fishermen’s chapel, where its white, arched walls are adorned with paintings by Braque, Dufy, Matisse, and Signac. Narrow, cobblestone streets lined with tiny shops climb the hillside from the picturesque harbor to the quiet, shaded, café-ringed Place des Lices, where pétanque (a bocci-like game) players gather except on Tuesday and Saturday mornings when an outstanding market transforms the square. Sunlovers drive past vineyards towards east-facing Ramatuelle, to the long, world-famous, golden-sand stretches of Pampelonne and Tahiti beaches and chic day-to-late-night scenes at fashionable Nikki Beach and Club 55
STAY
Château de la Messardière is just ten minutes distant from Saint Tropez, the gated entry to Château de la Messardière invites guests into the 25-acre cypress and pine-pepper-shaded, perfectly-manicured, citrusscented grounds of the exclusive resort hotel. There are 103 rooms and suites, many recently redecorated, plus a three-bedroom villa with a private pool. Lunch guests view the expanse and scenic setting with vistas extending to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and Pampelonne Bay. The Sunday buffet had multiple tables filled with platters of enticing food, from fresh shrimp, langoustine, and lobster to magnificent desserts. In addition to tennis, yoga, biking, and swimming, there’s a well-being refuge: Spa by Valmont. Buggies transport guests to the outdoor gym, tennis courts, and the kid’s club, where a pool, cinema, pirate ship, farm, and separate dining facilities occupy a private 2.5-acre site; a shuttle brings guests to and from the Jardin Tropézina beach and Saint Tropez.

THE BRANDYWINE VALLEY
VIBRANT, UNIQUE & AUTHENTIC
By Michael AlpinerThe same type of traveler who understands that the little “hole in the wall” eatery often has the best food appreciates the value of a getaway to one of America’s impressive smaller destinations. Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley in Delaware have opened their doors to a steady stream of new businesses and cultural experiences, making this town of simple pleasures even more desirable.
DISCOVER EARLY AMERICA
The words simple and historic murmur with revolutionary pride as tourists stroll through the picturesque streets of nearby New Castle. Echoes of Philadelphia reverberate through the alleyways and spaces between colonial homes, bordered by narrow sidewalks whose crooked masonry adds to the charm. One can meander along Delaware Street and into Opera House Arts and Antiques, where the eclectic selection of artifacts and curiosities span decorative items such as jewelry, local art, period clothing, and household décor.
A short walk down the block brings visitors to the John M. Cleveland Civil War Museum, which displays artifacts (mainly weaponry). In addition to the firearms are a series of contemporary prints on the walls which tell the random tale of the most brutal American War. Interestingly, all the items in the museum were donated by one person.
MORE PLEASURES
By now, the traveler has gained an appetite and so must head to Jessup’s Tavern and Colonial Restaurant, a revolutionary era, gustatory time machine where the menu selections match the motif. For starters, select a brew, such as Kwak, the establishment’s popular Belgian Amber Ale. Pair that with a Patriot Pulled Pork sandwich served with slaw and pickle, served on pewter, and you are suddenly transported back 200 years.
Once sated and in the historical mood, take a short walk to the George Read house. For those obsessed with the play 1776, George Read II was the son of George Read Sr., the Delaware congressman who created tension by refusing to join those who risked their necks to revolt against England and create a new nation. Despite his skepticism, Read went on to sign both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. Built in the Federal style around the turn of the 19th century, the George Read House is a historical landmark, displaying artifacts of historical significance.
Still wanting more history? Then bike rather than drive from New Castle to Wilmington, the second half of a classic Brandywine Valley vacation. This past year, Fin Outdoor Recreation introduced bike rentals as another way to explore Wilmington’s outdoors and expansive riverfront. Visitors can download an app to find available equipment to rent for the day. Biking is a beautiful way to explore the Jack A. Markell Trail, connecting Wilmington’s Riverfront to historic New Castle.
Once in Wilmington, especially if it is time for breakfast, a delicacy from The Riverfront Bakery will satisfy any morning craving. Their pastries, quiches, and crepes are top-notch and served within an atmosphere that straddles modern and classic, clean, bright, and welcoming. It is an excellent spot for lunchtime meals as well.
Directly across the street, Constitution Yards, with its signature illuminated archway, offers travelers a casual, beer garden meets beachfront meets tailgate party atmosphere. The wide variety of beer, picnic table conversations, large screen TVs broadcasting sports events, giant-size Connect Four and axe-throwing corrals excite the venue.
ON THE WILD SIDE
Walk off all the rich cuisine at Mt. Cuba Center (get there by automobile, though), a vast botanic garden committed to conserving native plants and their habitats. Besides guided and self-guided tours, the center hosts programs with themes of botany, conservation, wildlife, and nature-inspired crafts.
After all that fresh air, the traveler would be wise to dine at The Quoin, the restaurant inside the hotel of the same name. It is Wilmington’s first boutique hotel. The restaurant seats 155 guests and combines the iconic flavors of Southern France and Northern Italy, all with a contemporary spin. One suggestion is to start the meal with wood-roasted PEI mussels, then on to the hanger steak paired with a cabernet.
Before the vacation ends, visit Marshall Steam Museum at Auburn Heights. Before internal combustion engines rolled off the assembly lines, steam engines were the celebrated means of locomotion. In the small town of Yorklyn, the museum chugs visitors back to see the world’s most extensive operating collection of Stanley steam cars, in addition to the Auburn Valley Railroad with its 1/8th-size coal-fired steam trains that circle the property and give passengers rides.
Every destination has its appeal. After strolling through the towns of New Castle and Wilmington, visitors of the Brandywine Valley come away with a sense of appreciation for the simple ways, the rich history of this country, and the quality experiences that eschew the loud music and strobe lights. Small-town living often brings a strong sense of quaint, yet New Castle and Wilmington are not just quaint—they are two swatches from the great American quilt.

LONDON CALLING
BRITISH HISTORY + ROYAL SITES MAKE FOR SOME MAJESTIC MEMORIES
By Stacey ZableWith the coronation of King Charles III now a memory, it seems a trip to London reinforces a thought to visit some of those centuries-old palaces and churches to see first-hand where it all happened just a few months ago.
THE PALACES
Start your royal tour at the iconic Buckingham Palace, the King’s official London residence. See the terrace where he and other Royal Family members waved to the enormous crowd following the coronation. Be sure to time your visit for the Changing of the Guard ceremony. Dates vary, so check the schedule (Info: changing-guard. com/dates-buckingham-palace). If you plan your trip well in advance, you can look at life inside Buckingham Palace with tickets to visit the State Rooms, the public rooms where the Royal Family receives and entertain guests on official occasions. They are open for guided tours on select dates during winter and spring and for ten weeks in the summer. Highlights of the tour include the crimson Throne Room and the grand White Drawing Room with its secret door in which the Royal Family can enter and leave from the Palace’s private areas.
Another special royal site in London is Kensington Palace and its gardens. It was where Queen Victoria, born in 1819, lived as a child and was told she was now Queen at age 18 in 1837. The entry includes access to the rooms where she was raised. You can also see the current “Crown to Couture” exhibit, which runs through October 29th and pairs historical fashion and modern redcarpet couture. It features more than 200 objects, including 18th-century court dresses and today’s red-carpet couture from such celebrities as Lady Gaga and Lizzo
GOLD COACHES & MORE
The Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace is where you can view the carriages that transported King Charles to and from the coronation, including the magnificent Gold State Coach. The Royal Mews was built in the gardens of Buckingham Palace from 1822 to 1825 and houses not only the carriages but also the coaches and cars used by the Royal Family. It is also a working stable where you’ll find some of The Royal Mews staff homes. You can explore independently but take the free guided tour to get the most out of your visit.
CORONATION CENTRAL
Westminster Abbey is a magnificent church where coronations take place is a must-visit. See the Coronation Chair in St. George’s Chapel, the Royal tombs, the magnificent fan-vaulted Lady Chapel, and Poets’ Corner, where more than 100 poets and writers are buried or have memorials.
HISTORIC STAY
Today, St. Ermin’s modern touches make it warm and welcoming with such excellent features as a complimentary wine and canopies hour Monday through Thursday, a lovely Afternoon Tea in the Tea Lounge, and an extensive buffet breakfast at the Caxton Grill that can be included as a package. Caxton Grill is also a top spot for dinner, offering a menu featuring local ingredients, including those from the hotel’s rooftop garden and bee terrace. If traveling with kids, the spacious Family Suite can easily sleep five and includes two bathrooms. In addition, kid-friendly amenities like a Kid’s Concierge, spy kit, and the hotel’s bedtime story make the youngest guests feel welcome. THE VICEROY RIVIERA MAYA
MAYAN INFLUENCES FOR MODERN RELAXATION
By Jenny PetersAbout halfway between Cancun and Tulum, the Viceroy Riviera Maya is nestled in a seaside nook of lush jungle. This all-villa property is where you hide away from the rest of the world—and with little effort, find yourself replenished and at peace.
STAY
The arrival made it clear that this is no cookie-cutter resort. When the town car pulled up to the outdoor lobby, I noticed a hint of charred herbaceous aroma—part of the ceremonial welcome. I sipped an ice-cold coconut milk tea infused with lemongrass while the concierge reviewed the details for the coming days.
Viceroy Riviera Maya offers 41 villas with a plunge pool and private outdoor shower. The path to the villas is thick with jungle—oversized leaves and countless little waterfalls. On the way to our villa, we were escorted to the spa, where we were welcomed with a traditional Mayan purification ceremony. Once in the room, the soap concierge takes a few minutes to give a tour of our thatched-roof villa, including its private plunge pool and outdoor shower area. Then, she removes large slabs of freshly milled herbal soap from her woven sack and slices off a few bars for us.
EAT
The property offers several culinary experiences, including tequila, ceviche tasting, and a tamale cooking lesson. We opted for the mezcal and taco tasting. We were unprepared for the seemingly endless gastronomical parade of pairings—hearty pours of local mezcal and tacos ranging from suckling pig to crickets (yes, crickets!). All this while watching the waves come crashing in, fresh on the heels of an earlier storm. The resort’s second restaurant, La Marea, is elegant boasting many natural fibers, coastal hued-décor, and impeccable service. After dinner, we again took advantage of the property’s romantic nooks and sat in the oversized soft seating down by the water. We sipped cocktails with freshly squeezed juices and sank deep into the unbridled joy of nothingness.
RELAX
Whether you grab one of the beach lounges or reserve a floating cabana, you’ll be treated like royalty. Wayak Spa offers an extensive menu of Mayan-inspired treatments. Do not miss the opportunity to schedule a treatment in the outdoor area with a waterfall. Inside the spa, guests can also schedule use of the soaking and steaming amenities and their series of cold-to-hot full-body showers. After a soak, we scooped freshly prepared herbal scrub into small wood bowls. The scrub’s scent filled the air with an extra relaxation layer. And, of course, it made our skin feel amazing.
PLAY
In theory, you can leave the resort for some adventure and discover the local scene including the ancient ruins at Tulum. But if you do just one expedition, I recommend the resort’s private cenote tour. A cenote is a water-filled cave. The area is known for them, but the Viceroy Riviera Maya offers guests a tour and snorkeling expedition at a private cenote in the jungle. It’s breathtaking. You can explore the open water areas in the middle—or venture to the far edges of the cave.
Having spent days drenched in Mayan tradition at the Viceroy Riviera Maya, there’s no question we felt profoundly at peace.

IT’S ALWAYS A G’DAY
IT’S NONSTOP TO NEW ZEALAND & AUSTRALIA
By Jenny PetersHow do you know that the flight you’re on is something special? The water cannon greeting as the brand-new Boeing 787 Dreamliner pulls into the gate at JFK is a distinct clue; then the giant kangaroo character named Matilda greeting you as you leave baggage claim amid a huge fanfare of music, cheering and general excitement cements the feeling.
All that happened recently, as Qantas launched flight QF3, a direct flight with service beginning in Sydney, Australia, then hopping over to Auckland, New Zealand, with a two-hour layover to add passengers, and then going nonstop from there to JFK. Flight QF4 does the reverse from JFK.
A DREAM FLIGHT
These flights are a real game changer, as Qantas CEO Alan Joyce explains. “We’ve always been an airline that’s at the forefront of very long distances, pushing technology and aircraft and developing new destinations. And we’re now doing New York in a unique way,” Joyce says. “With these superefficient aircraft, we can fly routes now that we never thought were viable.”
Our flight took 15 hours of an estimated 16, with that long trip eased by traveling in business class, where famed Australian chef Neil Perry created menus that embrace both Aussie and New York tastes (ranging from snapper to spaghetti and meatballs) and the lie-flat beds helped make the trip pass surprisingly quickly and comfortably. There are 42 seats in that class, 28 in premium economy and 166 in economy on the brand-new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with each seat designed to give travelers a chance to rest along the way, as well as Perry’s excellent meals along the way.
Travelers from New York can choose to stop in Auckland and spend time seeing New Zealand’s spectacular landscapes on both the North and South Islands, or to continue to Sydney, where Australia’s magical allure awaits. Both places deserve as much time as you can give them, so perhaps taking the Qantas long-haul JFK-AKL-SYD flight might be something you’ll need to do more than once to get the full experience of both the wonderful countries it services. This summer the flights go three times a week; as of October, they will increase to four flights per week.

ICONIC ISTANBUL
A DEFINITE MUST-SEE DESTINATON
By Irvina LewThe busy Bosphorus Strait divides the dynamic city of İstanbul, which straddles hillsides on its European and Asian banks. The city was settled thousands of years before the ancient Silk Road; its Jewish heritage dates to 500 BCE, and its Greek Orthodox and Christian Roman communities are two thousand years old. The Ottoman Empire launched in the late thirteenth century, and today, 99 percent of a population of nearly 20 million is Muslim, of which about half are claimed to practice the religion. These layers of multicultural history—with Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires and Sephardic Jewish, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian influences—are all reflected in the city’s distinctive architecture and culinary diversity.
The up-to-the-minute-modern metropolis boasts luxury hotels, significant newlylaunched cultural venues, and a state-of-the-art transportation system. You’ll arrive at a sleek, new international airport or the world’s first underground cruise terminal: Galataport, with its shops, restaurants, and the new Peninsula Hotel. Once in the city, there are silent trams that connect the old and modern city, fast subways that link both sides of the Bosphorus Strait, and a popular public ferry system that crosses the Bosphorus between the European and Asian sides. Taxis are widely available, though it’s wise to ask a hotel valet for one because they vet the drivers.
SEE
Sultanahmet was the former Byzantine and Ottoman capital on the historic peninsula between the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn. Its current cobblestone streets are crowded with boutiques, hotels, and restaurants near significant landmarks. Chariot races occurred here, in Sultanahmet Square, the former Byzantine Hippodrome of Constantinople. Now, vendors with brightlycolored carts sell grilled corn, roasted chestnuts, and sesame-salt-topped, braided, bagel-shaped, pretzel-like Simit bread in the square between The Blue Mosque and the gold, mosaic-covered Hagia Sophia, a mosque that was originally built in 527, as the Church of the Holy Wisdom. Nearby, the recently-renovated, newlyreopened underground Basilica Cistern is a beautifully-lighted and sculpturestudded subterranean chamber supported by 336 marble columns and large enough to contain more than 17 million gallons of fresh water. This cistern supplied filtered water to the neighboring Topkapi Palace complex, where Sultans lived and worked from the mid-15th to the mid-19th century in a garden across the Bosphorus Strait and Asia; now, it’s a UNESCO historic landmark.
DINE
In Sultanahmet, vendors hawk Turkish-made gold, leather, carpets, and designer replicas at the enormous, domed Grand Bazaar. The famous Nusr-Et Steakhouse serves halal beef grilled, sliced, and seared in sizzling butter and salads topped with pomegranate seeds, corn, and avocado.
The 17th-century Egyptian Bazaar, aka The Spice Bazaar, where stalls display fragrant saffron, cumin, dried fruits, nuts, and a fantastic assortment of sweets, is home to the blue-tiled Pendeli Restaurant, which serves Anatolian food; the legendary eatery boasts a century old history, an international celebrity clientele, and Michelin Bib Gourmand status for its authentic Meze appetizers and Köfte meatballs.
In Balat, a neighboring district, the 15th-century Sephardic synagogue and Greek Orthodox church are near the New Balat Café & Restaurant, where the cook makes Gözleme pancakes al fresco. She rolls the individual mounds of dough, stuffs them with spinach or potato or meat, and cooks the tortilla-thin rounds on a crèpe-like griddle. In the bustling restaurant, hotel, and shopping district called Beşiktaş—which is also the name of the sports club and football stadium—the new Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) offers a 2,500-seat opera house, cinema, libraries, cafes, and the stunning Divan Brasserie Fuaye, which serves Turkish, Italian vegetarian options. Alaf, with its rooftop cocktail bar overlooking the Bosphorus, is also located in Beşiktaş; inside, Chef Deniz Temel serves traditional Anatolian, Kurdish, Armenian, and Yoruk cuisine, including a lamb pide, a stuffed pastry dish, cooked in a wood-fired oven! In Kuzguncuk, on the Asian side and reached by ferry and taxi, Ismet Baba is a waterside restaurant serving meze appetizers and whole grilled fresh fish near the Imoga Museum of Graphic Art and the homemade Aromaterapi boutique.
STAY
The iconic Çırağan Palace Kempinski is a former Sultans’ palace with eleven opulent suites in the original palace’s current 310 accommodations, all situated on a waterfront promenade, which is home to its park, historic arch, and swimming pools. The public can make restaurant reservations, including the stately fine dining venue, Tuğra, and Sanitas Spa. The spa offers a Turkish Ritual in the private, marblelined hammam; it includes a loofah exfoliation, a soft, foam-suds wash, a warm rinse, and a body massage. A modern marble hammam at the S-shaped 553room Conrad İstanbul Bosphorus is perched on a hillside, where rooms and the 14th-floor Summit Bar and Terrace overlook the Bosphorus. The luxurious 65-room Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet is housed in a converted, century-old Turkish prison adjacent to the Hagia Sofia mosque, which can be viewed close-up from its rooftop Sureyya Teras lounge.
DO
From the beginning of the Ottoman Empire, Sultans built personal marble-lined hammams plus grand, domed hammams for the public, most of whom didn’t have running water. Inside each hammam are water spigots in the marble walls and a heated, raised marble table called a göbektaşı for body services. Visitors flock to hammams in hotels and public ones, such as Haseki Hurrem Sultan Hamami, a 16thcentury venue renovated in 2007; Cağaloğlu c. 1741 and the Sultan Süleyman, c.1557, a coed hammam.

MINDIE’S MUSINGS
LOSING YOUR BEST FRIEND
By Mindie Barnettuthor and motivational speaker Mindie Barnett answers your questions about life, navigating these stressful and uncertain times, while steering you down a more straightforward path.
We welcome your questions and invite you to reach out to Mindie at mindiesmusings1@gmail.com
Dear Mindie,
I am distraught. I had to put my dog to sleep last week, and I have not been able to pick myself up, ever since. She was the love of my life and gave me so much emotional support. I am so lost without her and really in a state of depression. Anything you can offer to help ease some of my pain and to carry me through this horrible time would be much appreciated. Many of my friends and family don’t understand the level of pain I am in, saying “It was only a dog.”
Sincerely,
Feeling Lost
Dear Feeling Lost,
I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets are our family and if you’re lucky enough to get an incredibly special one, which seems you were, they can really become the center of our being. For some losing a pet is harder than losing a human. Pets love us unconditionally, ask nothing of us other than to be fed and cared for and are the most loyal creatures we’ll ever encounter. It’s perfectly normal that you are feeling lost without your companion, who seems more like a child than a pet, regarding the level of love you felt for her.
The first step I’m going to offer you to take is the hardest: Allow yourself to feel the pain. Often when we are facing times of despair or sadness as a defense mechanism we try and push the pain away. We distract ourselves; we push the sadness out of our minds, we don’t talk about the hurt. Those actions do not remove the pain, though. They just keep it in hiding which eventually manifests into something greater and something more maladaptive in our behavior, which can show up as any number of emotional disorders. You need to simply sit with the pain. You need to cry out loud, you need to talk to a friend or a family member or a therapist about how you are feeling and know that each day which passes will leave you feeling less pain and more love toward your late dog.
The next action is to try and remember a time when you were in a state of deep sadness and how you were able to overcome it. What steps did you take to work through the sadness and come out on the other side? How long did it take you? When you reflect on that circumstance now, do you still feel the same pangs of pain, or do you feel a sense of sadness but with a positive remembrance? Remember this time and try and apply those coping skills you acquired to this situation. You were resilient then, you managed to overcome that hardship so now you will be able to do the same now in this situation.
Lastly, when the time is right, and not too far off in the distant future, consider getting a new dog. This new love will not replace the love you’ve lost but add more happiness to your life and fill the void of emotional connection you had with the dog who just passed. A new dog never replaces an old dog, but it brings light and enlightenment, as well as joy.
Take care of yourself, allow yourself to grieve, which has many stages: denial, anger, deep sadness and can rotate around, coming and going when you least expect it. That’s all normal. The key is to allow yourself to feel so that you endure the pain which will ease as each day passes. I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers and wishing you the deepest of loves with another fur baby soon!
Love, Mindie
MY PLIGHT FOR SIGHT
A VISION TUNE-UP THAT’S QUICK & EASY
By Mindie BarnettIwas not blessed with good vision and vividly remember getting my first pair of glasses after my teacher noticed I was straining to see the blackboard. She was right. After a visit to our family ophthalmologist, I remember the thrill I felt knowing I could have my very own pair of glasses, just like my mom and dad. I felt so lucky and happy until I wasn’t.
As I grew into adolescence, my eyes changed drastically. I went from having only to wear my glasses to read or watch TV to needing them all the time. Yes, I had my glasses. No, I would no longer wear them. I wouldn’t say I liked how I looked in them, and contacts were a nightmare for me. When wearing them, my eyes would tear up so much that people would insist I was crying.
THE FIRST TIME AROUND
And then there was the advent of LASIK laser vision. It was the late 1990s, and back then, the process was much more grueling than it is today. The procedure was more invasive, the downtime much longer, and the discomfort much higher. But I signed myself up and documented the process live on my news broadcast. In about a month, I had 20/20 vision and tossed my glasses.
Fast forward twenty-five years later, and my vision began to decline. It started slowly. First, I just needed glasses to drive at night. Then, I couldn’t recognize people’s faces or read menus on a wall without visual support. I missed the days of not squinting and appreciating the details and wanted that vision back. Having already gone through LASIK vision correction years before, I knew the drill, but I also learned a second procedure could be trickier. So, I sought the best. Dr. Jeff Dello Russo who’s the pinnacle for LASIK surgery in the U.S. After a thorough eye exam, which proved my theory of how fast my vision was declining as I approached 50 years, I learned that I would be able to correct my vision effectively.
IT’S TIME
About a week later, numbing drops were put into my eyes, and about 30 minutes later I was positioned with my head resting below lots of machines and lights, and drifted off to sleep. I felt absolutely nothing! The process took about fifteen minutes, and I was done!
This was a difference from my first round of LASIK. The process was closer to an hour for both eyes back then. I was fully awake, felt discomfort, and could not open my eyes for at least twenty-four hours post-surgery so that the healing process could effectively begin.
This was not the case this time around! I could see perfectly! Other than a little sore and scratchy, my eyes felt fine, and I went home in sunglasses to rest. Sunglasses are needed for the first day only, inside and outside, to ward off any sensitivity one may feel from light immediately post-procedure. The next morning, I went to work, where I spent the day on a computer.
A SAFE PROCEDURE
One of the most significant advancements in LASIK is the advent of improved tools used to cut the corneal flap. Historically the procedure was done with a microkeratome, a small mechanical blade. Now the flap is created with another laser instrument, the femtosecond IntraLase device, which yields much more comfort and less downtime. In addition, LASIK can now correct larger magnitudes of astigmatism, which glasses and contact lenses cannot. LASIK is far superior to SMILE refractive surgery, according to a recently published study in The Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, to the trendy SMILE refractive surgery. In the survey, 80 patients underwent surgery; one eye with LASIK and one eye with SMILE, and 70 percent preferred the result of the eye treated with Lasik after 1-year post-op. LASIK treats all refractive errors, while SMILE only treats myopia, not farsightedness or astigmatism alone. Because LASIK has been around longer, it keeps advancing with time and tackling more vision impairments, creating a better quality of life!

FIVE & DIME
BRINGING BACK THE GLAMOUR OF OLD NEW YORK
By Anne RasoDo you ever walk past the Woolworth Building on Park Place and wonder what it was like in those charming storefronts decades ago? It was considered the tallest building in the world from 1913 to 1930 and remains one of the 100 tallest buildings in the U.S. Fast-forward 2023 and you’ll find the building intact with modern upgrades to include the extremely popular Five & Dime, which has been wowing fans of artisanal cocktails, European coffee, and excellent bar food since 2017. Five & Dime is truly a step back in time with its vaulted ceilings, marble bar, and dark wood trim.
DOCTOR KNOWS BEST
Five & Dime is the first dining establishment we visited that is owned by a medical doctor (who happens to love a good cocktail)! Dr. Mark Mohrmann, the head of Highline Orthopedics, has been practicing at 16 Park Place since 2015, so he quickly grabbed up the space that is now Five & Dime when he heard it was becoming available!
Dr. Mohrmann tells NYL that being a newcomer to the restaurant game fueled his enthusiasm. He recently told us, “Creating a restaurant/lounge in such a historic space was a thrilling experience. We stumbled upon the space through extensive research and exploring different locations that held architectural significance. The moment we discovered this historic gem, we knew it was the perfect canvas to bring our vision to life.”
BAKED GOODS & BAR BITES
Menu-wise, Five & Dime specializes in great bar bites and they large charcuterie trays brimming with hand-curated olives, classic Margherita pizza, and slices of bread/pastries baked specially by the legendary Balthazar Bakery. Dr. Mohrmann reveals The menu development process was a collaborative effort involving our talented team. We wanted to offer a unique cocktail/after-work experience that encourages sharing and socializing. That led us to choose a small eats theme that goes well with our uniquely crafted cocktails. The concept allows guests to savor various flavors and textures, fostering a lively and interactive ‘chill’ afterwork atmosphere.”
MIXING & MINGLING
The Five & Dime crowd is varied, although due to location, they get a lot of businesspeople from the Financial District who mingle with Tribeca natives. “We attract a range of individuals who appreciate exceptional cocktails, food, and musical evenings,” states Dr. Mohrmann. “We offer opera singers live every Tuesday, jazz nights, and more musical experiences. While we respect the privacy of our guests, we have had the pleasure of welcoming some celebrities to our establishment. Their presence adds to the vibrant energy and charm of the place.”
When NYL visited Five & Dime, we ordered a great charcuterie board that was four or five feet wide. We enjoyed homemade mozzarella, salami, prosciutto, Spanish olives, nuts, and more, followed by one of the most gorgeous Margherita Pizzas we have ever seen! (FYI: You may order the pizza to your preference, including all-white pies and adding multiple toppings.) The Chicken Parm Sandwich was perfect, as the golden crust stayed firm even through a healthy dose of homemade red sauce. We asked The Doc what his favorite items on the menu are, and he remarked, “Choosing favorites is always a challenging task when you have a menu filled with delectable options. However, I am fond of our famous Pizza, Eggplant Parm Sandwich, and Charcuterie Boards.”
A TOAST TO YOU
Five & Dime’s drinks are over the top in terms of the quality of the liquors used, presentation, and names. “Our mixologists have crafted a delightful signature cocktail called “Naked And Famous,” a vibrant blend of Aperol, Chartreuse, and lime. Also popular is the “Hopefully Inquisitive,” which consists of gin, lime, Creme de Violette, and “My Honey Is Spicy,” made with tequila, mezcal, honey syrup, and lime. I find these ingredients refreshing and enjoyable.”
Included on the drink menu is the “Carole Baskin”—those who follow Tiger King know who this lady with the “black widow reputation is and will undoubtedly chuckle! The cocktail is a lovely summery drink made with McClelland’s Speyside Whiskey, rosewater, and lemon. The Happy Hour is from 3 – 6 pm each weeknight except Friday when it is all night.
LOOKING AHEAD
Wonderful things lie ahead for autumn, including extending Five & Dime’s already huge coffee list (they are said to have the best Mocha Latte in town) and types of artisanal beer and ale on tap. Concludes Dr. Mohrmann with a smile, “As we move into fall, we are excited to introduce new tapas creations that embrace seasonal ingredients and flavors. Our culinary team is working diligently to curate a menu that will surprise and delight our guests. Additionally, we have unique events planned, including live music performances and themed evenings, to enhance the overall experience.”
Five & Dime is “so New York” that you will say that you cannot picture it being anywhere else in the world. For those who want to grab-and-go, a list of amazing coffees makes Five & Dime the place for workers heading to their nearby offices in the morning or a pastry or croissant for a quiet moment to enjoy in the park across the street.
Amazingly, this quaint storefront space is in its original configuration with ornamentation and design perfectly preserved. This is unusual in a town where so many grand old places are being knocked down and replaced with minimalist towers. Five & Dime has so much charm that you will always feel that it’s always worth the trip down to Park Place!

IL GRADINO
BEAUTIFUL FOOD…BOUNTIFUL PORTIONS
By Patricia Canole | Photography by Neil J TandyThere’s no question New York City is considered the Italian restaurant capital for regional cuisines boasting menus from Sicily to Tuscany and all points in between. Of course, this is wonderful until you receive a chilly look from the wait staff if you ask for anything additional to the order. It inevitably happens, which is why restaurateur Diego Argudo created Il Gradino with the idea of a piacere, which translates as “to your pleasure.” Argudo recalls one night, a diner could not decide whether to order Bolognese or Pesto. That’s when he suggested, “We’ll do a combination for you.” The result: a very delighted customer.
After more than two decades at Midtown East’s venerable Scalinatella as head captain, Diego Argudo opened his first venture, ll Gradino Ristorante (meaning “the step” referring to its below-street level). It is a longheld dream come true for the Ecuadorian native, who started his restaurant career at age 15 as a water boy when he arrived in New York City to join his father—a chef. He worked, learned, and decades later can say, “This is the restaurant I’ve always wanted.” It’s his dream come true.
BUON APPETITO
At ll Gradino, Argudo presents a menu of time-honored Italian classics for lunch and dinner, including options for risotto, calamari, veal medallions, Dover sole, lobster, and chicken. Diners are invited to ask for their favorite version of each dish for the kitchen to prepare to their specifications. Argudo’s hospitable policy for Il Gradino extends far beyond the six or so designated menu items. If a guest has a yearning for an Italian dish not on the menu or among a lengthy list of daily specials, all they need do is describe it, and the chef will accommodate the request. Argudo explains that for him, it’s all about pleasing guests’ palates, not catering to the chef’s ego. “If somebody wants risotto with sausage, for example, we’ll do it for them,” Argudo says. “We want to make people comfortable.”
ENDLESS CHOICES
The chef is Carlos Inga in his first executive chef role, having logged eight years as a sous chef at San Pietro and Il Molino; he is also a veteran of Caravaggio. The chef has an eye for the subtle lavish ingredients, which he folds into relatively simple dishes to give them a little extra kick. Inga has curated a selection of antipasti, salads, pasta (housemade), veal dishes, chicken-based plates, and fish offerings.
Antipasti can be simple, like the Cozze e Vongole Posillipo, clams, and mussels in classic marinara sauce, or Calamari a Piacera, calamari prepared according to your preference.
Of course, the entrees shine brightest, and every one of the five we tasted was a paragon of form and flavor, Raviolini Il Gradino, house-made ravioli stuffed with burrata, eggplant, zucchini cherry tomato saucy, basil; Vitello Milanese o alla Griglia, house butchered veal cutlets from the rack prepared in classic breaded Milanese style or as a grilled paillard crowned by arugula tossed with cherry; Petto Pollo Voldostana, chicken breast topped with prosciutto, Fontina and asparagus in brown sauce; Poussin Il Griglia, herbmarinated whole baby chicken, grilled; and Branzino al Sale, roasted sea salt encrusted Branzino.
SIMPLY DELICIOUS
Desserts are increasingly being upgraded in Italian restaurants. Here, the offerings are simple and delicious. Look for cheesecake, gelati and sorbetti—and even a cannoli for good measure. For imbibing, Argudo offers top shelf spirits, and fine wines from California and Italy. Cocktails are incredibly creative and the night we visited, the Belleni was being served and savored by guests.
Il Gradino embraces a refined modern aesthetic with a warm, welcoming ambiance. Vintage photos are displayed on one wall, white, black, and grey marble-grained mirror panels define another. The setting exudes a polished, subtle sophistication in which relaxed comfort rules.
The real reason to visit Il Gradino is for the homemade pasta. For this New Yorker who loves everything Italian, dining here will remind you of those excellent meals you had on your last trip to Italy. I know I’ll be back for a taste of the enticing menu of Italian classics. Adoro Il Gradino!

THE ULTIMATE SIMPLE SLIDER
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
1 pound of 80/20 ground beef
1 diced Vidalia or sweet onion
1/3 cup of mayonnaise
1/3 cup of ketchup
1 tablespoon of yellow mustard
1 tablespoon of sweet relish
Salt
Pepper
Garlic powder
1 12-pack of King’s Hawaiian Rolls (or the Trader Joe’s alternative, Aloha rolls)
2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
Sesame Seeds
One baking pan (I use a medium size aluminum disposable for this recipe)
Preparation
Dice your onion. Put oil in a skillet or frying pan set on high. Toss the diced onion in the pan for about a minute, and then add the ground beef. Cook thoroughly until done. Remove from heat.
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees.
Drain the grease from the beef mixture and place it in a bowl. Add salt, pepper and garlic powder. Lightly stir to mix.
Add mayonnaise, ketchup, yellow mustard and sweet relish to the bowl and mix. Using a serrated knife, cut through the center of the rolls, putting the top aside. Place the bottoms in the baking pan. Add beef mixture to bottom rolls evenly. (Note: If you want to add cheese this is the time.) Place roll tops over beef.
Melt the butter and brush onto the tops of the rolls. Add sesame seeds to the tops and then place in the oven for 15 minutes. Once the bread is nice and toasted, remove the pan from oven and let it sit for about 2–3 minutes. Then slice and enjoy!
Bon Appetit!

DINING ON THE EAST END
A GUIDE TO THE BEST IN THE HAMPTONS
By Patricia CanoleIt’s that time when New Yorkers make the annual exodus for weekends on Long Island’s East End—better known as the Hamptons. Over the decades, once a conclave of fishing villages, the Hamptons has evolved into the summer playground for the elite worldwide.
With that said the Hamptons’ tastes have also changed from catching tonight’s dinner to being served an elegant dinner under the stars. Not surprisingly, the Hamptons continue to become a less seasonal escape. It’s no longer open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Today, East End restaurants are thriving and ready to serve. Below is a collection of our favorite Hamptons restaurants, both classic and new.
T Bar Southampton At the helm is Chef Ben Zwicker who continually aims to surprise with a new twist on classic dishes. But if you’re heading out East this summer, look for T Bar Southampton where you’ll find the same quality menu as the Upper East Side flagship location. Restaurateur Tony Fortuna knows his loyal following love the relaxed atmosphere he has brought to the East End. Begin your meal with the much-touted Thin Crust Pizza or opt for the Classic Kale Salad with apple and sesame with chili-lime vinaigrette. Also on the menu are the very popular Tiger Shrimp Cocktail and Vietnamese Shrimp Roll. As delicious as the appetizers can be, the main event is, of course, the impressive cuts of beef—all expertly prepared to taste. The Black Angus Porterhouse for two is served with your choice of steak sauces. Complete your meal with some irresistibly delicious desserts like the Strawberry Sundae served with shortcake, meringue, brandy, and cream. Info: tbarsh.com
Almond Restaurant In the spring of 2001, co-owners Jason Weiner and Eric Lemonides opened Almond Restaurant offering reasonable prices, attentive service, and a well-appointed dining room reminiscent of a Parisian bistro. Most things have stayed the same. Look for Executive Chef Jason Weiner’s menu, which is comprised of bistro favorites, including Traditional Escargot with a divine sauce of garlic and Pernod; a selection of local and imported cheeses with balsamic reduction, fruit and nuts; Steamed Black Mussels with shallots, white wine, and parsley; and a spirited salad of Arugula, Baby Beets and Roquefort with candied walnuts are a few sample starters that win praise. A fresh raw bar is also available for starters with shellfish selections such as oysters, lobster, scallop and fennel crudo, marinated octopus, and shrimp cocktail. Entrees that please the palate include tasty Steak Frites with sauce Bordelaise, roasted shallots, and marrow, and Roasted Chicken with garlic, crushed potatoes, and natural sauce. All these delectable dishes at moderate prices make everything taste even better. Info: almondrestaurant.com

BARBIE
Not yet rated
Even if you aren’t the original Barbie doll generation (like I am), you’ve got to know that director Greta Gerwig has created a liveaction Barbie flick that is chockablock with Barbies and Kens, with the laeading two—Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling—perfectly cast. The pink-on-pink design has had fans excited for months, so adding in Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, and Dua Lipa as other Barbies and Simu Liu and John Cena as Kens makes it even more fun.
GRAN TURISMO
Not yet rated
This sports biopic tells the unlikely true story of a video-game player named Jann Mardenbrough, who took his virtual driving skills into the real world. As played by Archie Madekwe, this racing action flick traces his rise from Gran Turismo game player to race driver in the Japan Super GT series. Davis Harbour, Orlando Bloom, and Djimon Hounsou join in this unlikely tale of one kid who made it out of his mother’s basement.
HAUNTED MANSION
PG-13
Disney’s latest live-action adaptation of one of their theme-park rides (think The Pirates of the Caribbean) takes the Haunted Mansion to ride into the ghoulish story of a single mom who enlists a collection of ghostly experts to remove the otherworldly wraiths who live in her new mansion. Rosario Dawson leads an all-star cast that includes Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, Danny DeVito, Tiffany Haddish, Dan Levy, and more.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING, PART ONE Not yet rated
The MIF team led by Tom Cruise is back, 27 years after the first flick jumped from the classic Mission: Impossible TV show that began in 1966. So, the ongoing story of Ethan Hunt and his team of superspy experts cannot be stopped. This time, movie #7, it’s a two-part movie series as the team chases a weapon that could destroy the world; the second half arrives in theaters in 2024, so get ready to be left with a cliffhanger at the end of this one.
STRAYS R
While this may sound like a children’s comedy, it’s an R-rated adult raunchy revenge-fest about a neglected collection of stray dogs who band together to help a new abandoned pooch get revenge on his former owner. A mix of live-action and CGI-manipulated talking dogs, this one stars a funny ensemble cast including Will Ferrell, Jamie Foxx, Sofia Bergara, Isla Fisher, Randall Park, and Will Forte.

By Jenny PetersHOLLYWOOD’S NEWEST NEPO BABIES JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL F/X
We’re incredibly excited that Timothy Olyphant is back as Raylan Givens in this sequel to Justified, using more source material from author Elmore Leonard’s fantastic novels. This time the tough U.S. Marshal is in Detroit, taking on a sociopath (Boyd Holbrook) in a twisted tale. And in keeping with this month’s nepotism-in-Hollywood theme, Tim’s daughter Violet Olyphant joins dad as an actor in the show.
PAINKILLER Netflix
Peter Berg is at the helm of this limited series that goes down the rabbit hole of opioid addiction in America, with a talented cast of actors along for the drama. Matthew Broderick (who is, in fact, a Hollywood “nepo baby” himself, as his dad was actor James Broderick) and Uzo Aduba star, along with West Duchovny, the 24-year-old daughter of David Duchovny and Tea Leoni (she’s a double nepo!).
YOU ARE SO NOT INVITED TO MY BAT MITZVAH! Netflix
Adam Sandler takes nepotism to the nth degree in his new movie for Netflix (where he has a deal to make anything he wants to make, basically). He’s hired his wife Jackie and their daughters Sadie and Sunny to star with Idina Menzel (who plays his wife in the comedy) that’s all about the bat mitzvah tribulations of Sunny’s teenage character. She is 15 now, making it kinda seem like the Sandler’s paid for Sunny’s transition into adulthood ceremony via a Netflix movie!
HEART OF STONE Netflix
Gal Gadot stars as superspy Rachel Stone in this global action thriller á la James Bond films. It’s a definite try at creating a female action hero franchise that is not a Marvel or DC Comics superhero, so we’re cheering her on as an MI6 spy who has to save humankind from a bad person. Sound familiar? Add in hunky Jamie Dornan as her co-star (and a bit of nepotism, too, as Gadot’s real-life husband Jaron Versano takes a producing credit) and tune in to see if she can pull it off in this straight-to-Netflix adventure flick.
THE WINTER KING MGM+
Return to the days of King Arthur in this series that focuses on Arthur’s rise to power, with Eddie Marsan as the king and Nathaniel MartelloWhite as his Merlin. Based on the Bernard Cornwell series of novels known as The Warlord Chronicles, this one’s a new twist on the old tale, but look for Lancelot, Guinevere, Mordred and more familiar names in the ancient story.

‘REJECT SPECIESISM’ With Your Ride
Honk if you respect all animals! That’s the message hitting New York streets with a first-of-its-kind license plate designed by PETA. The specialty plate aims to get drivers to hit the brakes on speciesism, the archaic belief that other animals are inferior and exist solely for humans to exploit. Animals share our capacity for pain, hunger, fear, thirst, love, joy, and loneliness—yet speciesism is used to defend treating them like research tools, food ingredients, fabric, or playthings. Not only does this mentality contribute to the deaths of billions of animals each year, it also accelerates the climate catastrophe and the emergence of zoonotic diseases. Join PETA’s efforts to take our “Reject Speciesism” campaign on the road with this custom plate, available for $60 from any New York Department of Motor Vehicles office, by visiting PETA.org/Plates, or by calling the DMV Custom Plates Unit at 518-402-4838 (between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday). Encourage your friends and family who live in New York state to order the plate, too!

ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER
EMILY DARCHUK, CEO OF WHEYWARD SPIRIT
By Jenna GuarneriIn the dynamic and competitive business world, entrepreneurship requires innovation and the ability to create something unique. As an entrepreneur, you must identify market gaps and adapt to evolving customer demands. It’s about thinking outside the box, challenging norms, and bringing fresh perspectives to the table.
Emily Darchuk recognized a problem she was committed to resolving and transformed the solution into a career path. She is the Founder and CEO of Wheyward Spirit, the female owned, award winning, and sustainably-distilled whey spirit company.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Wheyward Spirit was born from Emily’s vision to create a spirit that resonates with consumers, emphasizing both quality and environmental impact. Recognizing the limitations imposed by narrow product categories in the spirits industry, Emily sought to bring the besttasting products to the market. Wheyward Spirit, as industry outsiders, takes a unique approach to spirit production. Through a design thinking mindset, they prioritize value for customers and partners, from farm to flask.
In addition to being an entrepreneur, Emily is also a food scientist who gained valuable experience in the industry. She discovered that a large amount of whey (a byproduct of dairy) goes unused in the food system every year, amounting to billions of pounds. By upcycling whey, the company can reduce waste, add value to dairy producers, and create a sustainable spirit with a unique flavor profile. Unlike traditional spirits, which are made from grains, grapes, or agave, Wheyward Spirit is made from whey. This sustainable practice reduces waste, lowers the carbon and water footprint of production, and creates a distinct flavor profile. “We are proud to be a first-of-its-kind whey specialty spirit where you can taste a difference and make a difference,” says Emily.
Launching Wheyward Spirit during the lockdown not only generated attention for the company, but also fostered a strong sense of community. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, Wheyward Spirit successfully adopted a direct-to-consumer strategy that adhered to three-tier regulations. This approach enabled a direct connection with customers, bypassing intermediaries like large retailers and distributors. The invaluable feedback and support from early customers were instrumental in shaping Wheyward Spirit’s evolution. As a result, the spirit is now being savored at various venues nationwide, including events, conferences, restaurants, and homes.
Despite Emily’s incredible success in the alcohol industry, the sector continues to exhibit a substantial gender disparity. Women occupy less than 4 percent of C-suite positions in the beer, spirits, or wine field, highlighting the lack of representation.
COMPANY EXPANSION
While female-owned and distilled alcohol brands are on the rise, achieving greater diversity in retail buyer and distributor roles is crucial for promoting equity and enabling novel products to enter the market. “My advice to women is to know challenges absolutely exist but don’t lose sight of your goals, as there are opportunities and many good people to build a community with for shared success,” Emily says.
Not too long ago, Wheyward Spirit launched Wheyskey, the barrel-aged version of their award-winning spirit. Through the oak aging process, Wheyskey develops a rich and smooth flavor with notes of oaky vanilla, toffee, and warm spice. This specialty spirit is carefully aged to maintain its original character while delivering the best possible flavor. Whether enjoyed neat or in cocktails, Wheyskey offers a complex and approachable drinking experience.
Wheyward Spirit is driven by a commitment to breaking boundaries and offering responsibly crafted, flavorful spirits. Recognizing a market gap for approachable and sustainable aged spirits that retain their true character, Wheyward Spirit listened to their diverse customer base and analyzed data from the website’s cocktail quiz. This valuable insight revealed a balanced mix of clear and dark spirit drinkers, leading to the natural evolution of their product offerings.

MY NEW YORK STORY
MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC
By Elizabeth DarwenFor the past 100 years, Manhattan School of Music has upheld a tradition from its humble beginnings as a small settlement music school to its status today as an internationally renowned music conservatory.
The school’s founder, Janet Daniels Schenck, studied piano in Paris and social work at Columbia University. Before WWI, she volunteered at the Union Settlement on East 104th Street, where she became interested in the struggles and needs of the area’s immigrant population. By 1918, she had established an independent music school with 120 students and a faculty of 23.
A NOTE OF EXCELLENCE
The school’s reputation grew over time, eventually becoming an accredited college offering a Bachelor of Music degree in 1943 and a master’s degree in 1947. Dr. Schenck retired in 1956, and John Brownlee, a noted baritone and member of the MSM voice faculty, became the school’s second president. President Brownlee oversaw an ambitious expansion program centered on purchasing the Juilliard School’s Morningside Heights building, which was preparing to relocate to Lincoln Center.
MSM’s college enrollment increased after relocating in 1969 from its long-time East Side home to the more extensive facilities on West 122nd Street and Claremont Avenue. The preparatory division expanded, and extension/evening classes were added. The school’s already well-known Opera Theatre grew in popularity and critical acclaim, attracting exceptionally talented students. Metropolitan Opera conductor George Schick succeeded Brownlee as the school’s third president, and the Santa Fe Opera’s founder and general director, John O. Crosby, took over as president in 1976. Gideon W. Waldrop was appointed in 1986, followed by Peter C. Simon in 1989. During this period, significant curriculum additions included the addition of a Doctor of Musical Arts program in 1974, the introduction of a jazz degree in 1984, and the establishment of the Graduate Program in Orchestral Performance in 1991.
Marta Casals Istomin, a former Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts director, was appointed president of the school in 1992. During Marta Istomin’s tenure, the G. Chris and SungEun Andersen Residence Hall, which opened in 2001, was built adjacent to the existing school. In addition to providing the school’s first on-campus student housing, the 19-story structure allowed for two new performance spaces, a new library, and much-needed practice and rehearsal rooms. Following Dr. Robert Sirota’s term as president (2005-13), the school’s current president, James Gandre, was appointed.
President Gandre has overseen significant campus improvements, including a sweeping renovation (tied to MSM’s Centennial celebrations in 2018–19) of the school’s main performance space, Neidorff-Karpati Hall, and the establishment of a grand new entrance on Claremont Avenue. President Gandre has also overseen establishing a degree program in Musical Theatre, the first of its kind at an independent New York City conservatory, and the Global Conservatoire, a unique virtual learning partnership with conservatories in Amsterdam, Vienna, Copenhagen, and London.
Recently Manhattan School of Music (MSM) hosted the 2023 Gala at The Rainbow Room in New York City. The Gala, hosted by Richard Gaddes and Melissa Wegner, honored long-time members of the MSM Board of Trustees Marcia Clay Hamilton and Edward Lowenthal. A celebration of the School’s prestigious Opera Studies Program, the evening featured performances by mezzo-soprano and two-time Grammy Award winner, Metropolitan Opera Artist J’Nai Bridges (BM’09), former New York Yankee, Latin Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist and MSM Trustee Bernie Williams (BM’16), recent MSM graduates and current MSM students, among other notable performers.
Among the recent graduates to perform included MSM alumni bass-baritone Le Bu (BM ’22) and baritone Daniel Rich (MM’19); both are currently in the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development program. Le Bu was a winner of the 2022 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and earlier this year Daniel Rich was a winner of the inaugural New York City Opera/MSM Duncan Williams Voice Competition.
The Gala was hosted by Richard Gaddes (HonDMA’17), former General Director of the Santa Fe Opera and founding General Director of the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and Melissa Wegner (MM ’05), Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and Laffont Competition.

TIME OUT WITH...
ACTOR FEDERICO SCRIBANI OF THE WHITE LOTUS 2
By Brian AkerItaly has always been a top destination for Americans, especially New Yorkers, and after last fall’s premiere of HBO’s The White Lotus 2, bookings soared to record levels for 2023. Venice, Rome, and Naples are all reporting sold-out hotels and tours through the year, but no place has seen as dramatic a surge as Sicily, for which the popular cable hit show can take at least partial credit. White Lotus 2 revealed the beauty of Sicily with its breathtaking shots of the Mediterranean, gorgeous landscapes, and that luxury hotel (The Four Seasons, San Domenico Palace), all providing the perfect setting for creator Mike White’s popular anthology comedy/drama series
Among the ensemble cast is Italian actor Federico Scribani, who played lounge pianist Guiseppe, memorably seduced and drugged by a pretty girl aspiring to take his job at the hotel. Scribani is a veteran actor in Italian stage, film, and television work, with The White Lotus 2 becoming his first opportunity to work with an American production team. “It was an amazing experience for all of us, especially the Italian actors,” says Scribani. “For us, it is not easy to be cast in American productions, especially if an actor does not speak English. In Italy, the budgets are not as large as in Hollywood, and the production schedule is much shorter, as sometimes an entire film can be shot in four weeks.”
A DEFINITE DREAM
The series is set during summer, with costumes created to reflect the season. Still, when it came time to shoot in March 2022, Sicily was unseasonably cold, as was the cast in the exterior shots, which included the chilly waters of the Mediterranean. Despite the cold temperatures, the atmosphere on the set was one of camaraderie and teamwork. “We all stayed at the hotel, and the cast and crew who were not working would get together for lunch or dinner. It felt cohesive, like a real family. And the people of Sicily were incredibly kind to all of us, treating us very well wherever we went, in the true style of Southern Italian hospitality.”
White Lotus 2 has already won the Screen Actors Guild award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. In contrast, fellow actor Jennifer Coolidge won an award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor. So how was she to work with? Scribani says, “Jennifer is just like you see her on television. She is bubbly and kind; she was a joy to be around and professional.” Season 2 had much to live up to, considering its premier season’s critical and ratings success. This second installment surpassed all expectations, garnering lavish praise from critics and beating the ratings of its predecessor.
Having now been a part of a series as acclaimed as The White Lotus, Scribani is open to working with more American productions in the future. He has roles upcoming in Italy and wants to spread his wings internationally. He is an actor who speaks Italian, French, and English, with acting credentials from the prestigious National School of Cinema in Rome. Scribani has a wealth of experience to draw upon for his characters. He says, “American production standards are exceedingly high. They create incredible works and characters with stories worth telling. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with so many talented actors on this project. Director Mike White told me, ‘You are a great actor,’ and for me, that was incredibly validating.”
