ith the holidays fast approaching and pivoting being the new norm, I’ll let you in on a conversation I had the other day with a close friend who is also my art director. He stressed not to get caught up in a doom and gloom letter about how the pandemic’s effects will put a damper on this holiday’s atmosphere because there’s so much of that out there already. I’m taking his good advice and acting upon it. So, to all the media covering stories like Santa is skipping Macy’s for the first time in 159 years or there will be no Miracle on 34th Street this year, I’m going a different route by way of the North Pole to show that the Christmas Spirit is not only alive and kicking but more evident and stronger than ever. Let’s always remember NYC is hands down the absolute best magical place to be during the holidays. Some of the easiest and traditional thoughts that instinctively come to mind are the twinkling of lights and one-of-a-kind displays in the department store windows, the seasonal smell of roasted chestnuts on every street corner, or even a romantic horse and carriage ride under a warm winter blanket with your loved one on a crisp winter night through the famous paths of Central Park. And surprisingly enough, the Winter Village in Bryant Park is open for ice skating while jamming to some holiday tunes. Afterward, grab a cup of hot chocolate and do some shopping throughout the village for that perfect impulse buy you didn’t realize you needed. This year, some of us will be taking a less traditional path to enjoy the Holiday Spirit. Sharing in ways that will have a huge impact on someone else’s life will make a difference. Volunteer your time. It’s a perfect opportunity to share your extra time off with fellow New Yorkers in need. Some organizations like City Harvest and Meals on Wheels are looking to ramp up on additional food rescue operators. Another direct way is through donating, and I’m not speaking about money. I’m talking about simple things that could have a huge impact on an adult or child such as a coat you haven’t worn for years that is just hanging in a closet and could be donated to the 2020 Coat Drive. Maybe even an extra blanket you don’t use which will keep someone else warm. This act of kindness is in each of us and what Christmas Spirit is all about. When all of that’s done, here’s a hint on how to relax and enjoy the warmth of the season you feel. Go to On Demand on your cable box, search the words “Yule Log,” and you will find hours of holiday music playing as your TV screen transforms into a crackling fireplace. Then sit back, put your feet up, and grab a cup of hot chocolate, or even a glass of scotch and relax. I’m telling you from experience. It’s perfect. I look forward to next year and sharing new ideas and topics with you in the pages of New York Lifestyles and Pet Lifestyles magazines. Have a Healthy and Happy Holiday. P.S: I just want to wish my wonderful wife a Happy Anniversary and say thanks for a great 18 years and many more.
