SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
THE RESCUE ISSUE
The fall issue of Pet Lifestyles Magazine, The Rescue Edition, is almost completed. And the timing could not have been better. Unfortunately, the situation with respect to overcrowding at rescues and shelters across the nation continues to worsen. The majority of municipal shelters are reporting overcrowding at their facilities, which means that euthanization rates are growing at an exponential and untenable rate.
The Rescue Edition features a database of rescues and shelters that you can adopt or foster from, volunteer for or donate to. The Rescue Edition also features stories about rescue-specific issues for dogs and cats, tips and tricks on training, new products to help you get off to the right paw with your new furrever one and more.
As the euthanization crisis continues to grow, I have been on the phone with shelter directors across the country to find out what their pain points are and how we can help.
As an example, at Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), prior to the pandemic, live release rates (the percent of animals that leave shelters for responsible homes) hovered around 90-92%. That number would be a dream today given the endless stream of notifications we have received from ACC about overcrowding. That means that ACC will have to, by contract with the city, increase euthanizations to make room for more homeless pets. Please, don’t misunderstand us, the problem is not ACC. No one who works at a shelter or volunteers for a rescue wants to euthanize an animal unnecessarily. The issue is a very expensive cost of living combined with stubborn inflation rates as well as political uncertainty in a very turbulent election year. These factors always bring in lower adoption numbers. Pet Lifestyles Magazine is working with ACC to not only promote their new shelter facility in Queens County. But why wait for this issue to come out? There is a way we can all help, today—volunteer, adopt, foster, donate. And I could not think of better shelters or rescues to nominate than ACC, Best Friends Animal Society, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter and more. Please reach out to your local municipal shelter and rescues today to see how you can help!
Stay pawesome!

ENTREPRENEUR & PHILANTHROPIST
JULIE KELLEY
SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS
By Patricia Canole | Photos courtesy of Aerial Design & Build
In the dynamic world of architecture and construction, few names resonate with as much Innovation and respect as Julie Kelley. As the co-founder and one of the visionaries behind Aerial Design & Build, Kelley has redefined what’s possible in modern building design and execution. Her New York City-based firm, now in its second decade, highlights its unique approach to integrating cutting-edge design with practical construction techniques. It has set the company apart and influenced the entire residential and hospitality industry.
Kelley’s journey began when she discovered a fascination with architecture and construction; her childhood friend’s father was a contractor. She loved to design house plans—big and small—on paper and always kept the dream of owning her firm alive. She remembered that she opted for wood shop one high school semester rather than home economics. Even then, the young entrepreneur distinguished herself as an innovative thinker with meticulous diligence.
As the years passed, Kelley found herself running an accounting firm with many high-profile construction clients who provided invaluable insights into the industry’s workings and challenges. Overseeing the office, she began to see the disconnect between architectural vision and construction realities. She noticed that there was often a gap between what architects envisioned and what could be practically built. “Design is not just about aesthetics, she told us, “It’s about creating spaces that enhance the way we live and work.”
Kelley recognized an opportunity to bridge this gap by partnering with Rupila Sethi to form a company that seamlessly integrates design and construction processes.
DREAMS COME TRUE
In 2007, Julie Kelley co-founded Aerial Design & Build, a fullservice design consulting, general contracting and project management firm based in New York City. She and her business partner Sethi quickly gained a reputation for their high-end residential, commercial, and hospitality projects. But even more, the company distinguishes itself with a commitment to personalized attention and trust, ensuring a pleasant construction experience for its clients. Of course, Kelley and Sethi faced numerous challenges, including initial funding and clients who would trust their integrated approach. But they also knew they were onto something revolutionary. Persistence and dedication paid off.
Under their leadership, Aerial Design & Build has completed numerous notable projects, from luxury residential properties to high-end commercial spaces. Kelley’s company is characterized by her innovative design solutions and commitment to quality. The Waterworks Flagship Showroom, 505 5th Avenue, 50 Gramercy Park South, and Libertine Restaurant are just a few of the properties that have redefined urban living with their dedicated design collaborations and spaces.
She believes in a comprehensive approach to building, where design and construction are not separate phases but part of a continuous, collaborative process. She says, “Innovation is at the heart of what we do. We strive to push the boundaries and deliver unique, high-quality projects. And collaborating as a team with talented architects and designers is key.”
Kelley fosters a culture of creativity and collaboration at Aerial Design & Build and believes in empowering her team to think outside the box. She also notes that some of the best ideas have come from brainstorming sessions where everyone, from interns to senior staffers, has a voice. Kelley believes a successful project “results from a dedicated team working together. Leadership is about guiding and supporting your team to achieve excellence.”
Their work has not gone unnoticed in the industry. For its role in creating the finished product, Aerial has been named Contractor of the Year and featured in numerous architecture and business publications. Aerial Design & Build has also received accolades for its commitment to sustainability.
A PHILANTHROPIC APPROACH
But never one to remain still for too long, Julie has touched on philanthropy. One of her top missions is animal rescue in Greece. Called Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. (Successfully Managing Animal Rights Today), this global non-profit is dedicated to addressing the stray animal problem. The animal welfare organization emphasizes thinking globally while acting locally, recognizing that each country faces unique challenges in managing stray populations.
Education forms the cornerstone of Kelley’s advocacy. She created bilingual brochures highlighting the health benefits of animals to humans, spoke at a local university, and organized an animal-themed children’s tennis tournament. These efforts paid off, with the Greece Ministry of Education approving a series of seven educational videos for use in public schools nationwide.
HAPPY & HEALTHY
Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. has also made strides in practical solutions. The organization has installed feeding stations in multiple municipalities, providing safe spaces for stray cats to eat while normalizing community interaction with these animals. These initiatives have helped break down the stigma surrounding strays, as locals observe healthier, well-cared-for animals in their neighborhoods.
Recognizing local communities’ financial constraints in providing veterinary care, Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. relies heavily on volunteers and donations. The organization has initiated a veterinary internship program, allowing students to gain firsthand experience while helping the shelter cats and obtaining invaluable cultural experience regarding the stray animal challenges.
The impact of Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. extends beyond animal welfare. She has observed a shift in community attitudes, with people becoming more accepting and supportive of efforts to care for strays. The organization’s success is evident in the thriving outdoor strays that greet them daily and the numerous cats placed in loving homes.
As Aerial Design & Build and Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. continue to soar to new heights, one thing is clear: the landscape of tomorrow will be shaped by visionaries like Julie Kelley, who dare to challenge the status quo and reimagine what’s possible in the world of design and construction.
We recently met with Julie Kelley to learn more about this fascinating woman and her company.
Describe some initial challenges you faced when starting Aerial Design & Build and how you overcame them.
One of our inspirations for starting Aerial was to create a womenowned firm that reflected our overall vision of seeing the whole project as an aerial view. Initially, some would assume we were just the designer rather than the general contractor, but it became clear once they could see the results.
Could you provide examples of innovative techniques or technologies that your company uses?
Throughout the years, we have continued to learn and add the best practices possible. One of our attributes is the organization of our projects, for which we utilize the construction program Procore. We are also very communicative, and Rupila and I are always copied on all project emails to have an overview. We also have our office protocol for a new project, and project packages are prepared for the project managers.
What fundamental values do you try to instill in your company culture?
Our company has a talented team that we treat like family. Our hardworking team always wants to do the best job for our clients. We also keep as good relations as possible with all parties (i.e., architects, designers, owners, building management, vendors, etc.). A team approach is a successful way to work on the project from beginning to end.
Can you share how Aerial Design & Build has influenced the broader architecture and construction industry?
The trust we instill with our clients and the high level of communication can carry on for our reputation. When other firms learn about Aerial, we hope they also wish to provide their clients with the same level of professionalism. The “contractor” can often have a problematic reputation for not completing projects, etc.; we hope all contractors in our industry avoid this.
What are your thoughts on the future of architecture and construction? Are there any emerging trends or technologies you’re particularly excited about?
The market has been very favorable to renovation works in the past years, and since COVID, many lifestyles for work have changed. This has given us an added mindset to consider when discussing possibilities with our clients. We also see that even commercial spaces are much more employeefriendly, with more common areas for them to utilize. I think this all gives a win/win approach to our lives, and hopefully, we create more peace and happiness in whatever setting one is in.
What advice would you give young architects or construction entrepreneurs looking to make their mark?
The industry is always changing, and we are constantly learning. However, one must be organized, work to find the best vendors and help maintain the quality of work. One must also realize that it takes a lot of extra effort to do this job, but in the end, it is pretty rewarding when you see the results.
Are there any upcoming projects or initiatives for Aerial Design & Build that you’re particularly excited about?
We are excited about several upcoming projects and a couple that are currently in progress. We will be renovating the Waterworks showroom in the Flatiron District, working on a very modern matcha tea establishment, and having some tremendous residential apartments under renovation or about to start with some creative designs that we look forward to implementing.
Tell us more about your efforts at Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T.
Let’s be S.M.A.R.T. is a dream come true that I founded back in 2007 to help educate the general population about our amazing animals and to rescue, heal and rehome the strays in Greece, where they struggle quite a bit. We bring animal-minded people from all over the world to help in our mission. We share the pros and cons of the culture toward the strays and are always open to learning new approaches that support the communities, children and our animals.
I treat Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. as professionally as I do my construction business and am happy that one can help support the other. We have to give in whatever means to help the innocent, whether it be our animals, children, or other situations. We host a veterinary program for U.S. students to experience the cat sanctuary. We work closely with Greek vets and other animal-related organizations such as a wildlife rescue, turtle sanctuary, and more. I see progress being made over the years and look to continue working toward a better life for the people and the animals to cohabitate together and respect each other.
How does Julie Kelley rest and relax?
Good question! I am always on the go and multi-tasking, so I try to manage all my responsibilities. I love to work and have been doing so my whole life. I try to keep a positive perspective. While it can be challenging when situations arise, whether unexpected, sad, or overwhelming, I try to remain balanced to tackle the issues at hand. A day of rest is one where I can be at home and feel my workload is managed. I can do this and that around the house and be with my cats! And for fun, I love to sing karaoke, so if I can fit this into my schedule, this makes for an entirely positive day. I would be bored if I did not have so many things to work on for Aerial and Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T.!

JEM MACY
A LOVE FOR THE ART OF WINEMAKING
By Patricia Canole
In the heart of Tuscany, a region renowned for its picturesque landscapes and centuries-old winemaking traditions, an American woman named Jem Macy is making waves. With her innovative approach and unyielding passion, Macy is redefining what it means to produce wine in one of the world’s most revered vinicultural regions. Her story is one of audacity, resilience, and a deep-seated love for the art of winemaking.
Jem Macy’s journey to becoming a winemaker in Tuscany is as unique as her wines. Raised in New England, Macy’s initial career path was far removed from vineyards and wineries. However, a serendipitous trip to Italy ignited a latent passion for wine, prompting a dramatic career change.
Macy’s fascination with wine quickly transformed into a full-blown obsession. She enrolled in viticulture and enology courses, immersing herself in the science and artistry of winemaking. Her dedication led her to Tuscany, where she decided to settle and pursue her dream of producing exceptional wines.
EMBRACING GOOD CAUSES
With its rolling hills and sun-drenched vineyards, Tuscany is steeped in winemaking traditions that date back to the Etruscans. This region is home to some of the world’s most celebrated wines, such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Entering this hallowed ground as an outsider and an American woman was no small feat. Yet, Macy was undeterred.
She carved out a niche with the longstanding family-owned wineries. To do this, she focused on innovation while respecting the essence of Tuscan winemaking. Macy introduced sustainable practices and modern technologies to her vineyards, which initially raised eyebrows among local vintners but soon garnered respect as the quality of her wines became evident. The time and energy certainly paid off.
Sustainability is at the core of Macy’s winemaking philosophy. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Jem Macy is also a vocal advocate for gender equality in winemaking. She actively mentors young women who aspire to enter the field, giving them the knowledge and confidence to pursue their dreams. Macy’s winery has become a beacon for female winemakers, fostering a supportive community that celebrates diversity and inclusion.
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS
As Macy continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in winemaking, she remains dedicated to her core values of quality, sustainability and inclusivity. Her story reminds us that innovation and tradition can coexist harmoniously, creating extraordinary wines that reflect the best of both worlds. In the ever-evolving landscape of Tuscany’s winemaking, Jem Macy stands out as a visionary, shaping the future while honoring the past.
We met with Jem Macy recently to find out a little bit more about this fascinating woman.
Tell us more about where you grew up and how it influenced your independent spirit.
I grew up in Groton, Massachusetts, a New England applefarming town northwest of Boston where I founded my first business at age 11, a summer camp for local preschoolers. Some years later, I enrolled in college, where I studied Art History and earned an MBA in France. I have always been fascinated by Europe. My mom says that when I left in 1994 for INSEAD (Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires), she knew I was moving to Europe for good! In 2000, after an INSEAD MBA and five years living in Germany, I moved to Tuscany and founded Castello Poggiarello, a boutique organic winery.
What brought you into the wine business?
While managing the estate’s winemaking and sales, I worked as the Italian portfolio manager for North Berkeley, a U.S. wine importer. I tasted thousands of samples a year, worked in top cellars throughout Italy and France, and traveled regularly to the U.S. to promote wine. Then I fell in love with Siena. The rest is history!
How did you learn the winemaking business?
By hanging around cellars in Burgundy and talking incessantly to winemakers, tasting thousands of wines a year for many years, and primarily by what I like to call “test and learn.”
Tell us more about Fanciulle Vini
We began making wine in the fall of 2019. My sister, Caitlin, helped me establish the winery, and we both have two daughters, so the name Fanciulle—girls in Italian—was chosen. We work with old-vine Sangiovese vineyards, including some planted in 1946.
How do you see Fanciulle Vini standing out from other Tuscan wineries?
In every aspect of winemaking, we do things differently than what’s typically done in Tuscany. For example, no machinery is used in the vineyards (to avoid compacting the soil). There would be no point being organic if I drove a few tons of metal over the worms and bugs twenty times a year, crushing that soft, airy soil I work so hard to nourish.
In the cellar, we work with more precision than many wineries in terms of fermentation temperatures and timing and our approach to aging the wines, which is what lets us preserve all those delicate flavors and aromas.
I am aiming to make lacy, ethereal wines—wines that ask us to re-calibrate our palates to fully take them in—they’re that subtle and fleeting.

FALL FASHION FORECAST 2024
EMBRACING NOSTALGIA & INNOVATION
By Patricia Canole
This season, designers draw inspiration from a captivating blend of nostalgic elements to innovative designs creating a dynamic and eclectic fashion landscape. Fall 2024 promises to be a season of exciting contrasts and bold self-expression, from reimagined retro silhouettes to sustainable materials and tech-infused garments.
RETRO REVIVAL
This fall, the fashion pendulum swings back to the past, with strong influences from both the 1970s and 1990s. The free-spirited bohemian aesthetic of the ‘70s returns in the form of flowing maxi dresses, high-waisted flared trousers, and suede jackets adorned with fringe details. Earth tones like rust, mustard, and olive green dominate this trend, evoking a sense of warmth and nostalgia.
Meanwhile, the ‘90s grunge and minimalist styles are experiencing a renaissance. Oversized flannel shirts, slip dresses layered over turtlenecks, and chunky platform boots are back in vogue. However, these classic pieces are updated with modern twists, such as unexpected color combinations and innovative fabric blends.
SUSTAINABLE CHIC
As environmental concerns continue to shape consumer choices, sustainable fashion moves from niche to mainstream in fall 2024. Designers are embracing ecofriendly materials like organic cotton, recycled polyester, and innovative fabrics made from agricultural waste. Look for labels touting their use of low-impact dyes and waterconserving production methods.
This season also shows a popularity surge for “slow fashion” pieces – high-quality, timeless garments designed to last for years. Investment pieces like well-tailored wool coats, durable denim, and versatile knitwear are essential for the conscientious consumer.
POWER DRESSING REIMAGINED
As the nature of work continues to evolve, so does office attire. Fall 2024 sees a fresh take on power dressing that balances professionalism with comfort and personal expression. Relaxed suiting in unexpected fabrics like corduroy or velvet offers a softer alternative to traditional business wear. Mix-and-match separates in bold prints and colors encourage creativity in corporate dressing.
For those splitting time between home and office, versatile pieces that transition easily from video calls to in-person meetings are essential. Look for elevated loungewear, polished knit sets, and tailored yet comfortable trousers that work equally well in both settings.
BOLD COLORS & PATTERNS
In reaction to the subdued palette of recent years, fall 2024 embraces vibrant colors and eye-catching patterns. Brilliant hues of sapphire blue, emerald, green, and amethyst take center stage, often paired in unexpected color-blocking combinations. Animal prints evolve beyond traditional leopard and zebra, with abstract interpretations and unusual color variations adding a fresh twist.Mixing patterns becomes an art form, with clashing prints creating visually stunning ensembles
ACCESSORY SPOTLIGHT
Accessories for fall 2024 strike a balance between bold statement pieces and practical luxury items. Oversized totes in sumptuous leather or ecofriendly alternatives cater to the needs of the on-the-go lifestyle. Chunky chain necklaces and earrings continue their reign, featuring recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones.
Footwear focuses on comfort without sacrificing style. Chunky loafers, sleek ankle boots with sensible heels, and tech-enhanced sneakers designed for all-day wear dominate the shoe trends.
PERSONALIZATION TAKES PRIORITY
The most significant trend in fall 2024 is not a specific style or item but rather an emphasis on individual expression. Designers and retailers offer more customization options than ever, from made-to-measure clothing to accessories that can be personalized with interchangeable components.
As we enter the new season, fall 2024 offers a rich tapestry of choices that honor the past while embracing the future. Whether you’re drawn to ecoconscious designs, tech-enhanced garments, or bold statement pieces, this autumn’s trends provide many opportunities to refresh your wardrobe and express your style. Embrace the season of change and let your fashion choices reflect the multifaceted, forward-thinking individual you are.

TRAVEL FROM NYC TO SERENITY
EXPLORING THE PRIDWIN EXPERIENCE ON SHELTER ISLAND
By Michael Alpiner
Part of the joy of travel is the ability to suspend reality and adopt a life you could have experienced in an alternate universe—or you are one of the elite for whom this is your universe. The majestic landscapes of “the good life” are just the fringe benefits of hard work and prosperity.
Shelter Island, nestled between the North and South Forks of Long Island, is a nautical paradise only two hours from New York City. The journey from the mainland of Long Island to Shelter Island begins with a short ferry ride—between five and eight minutes—from either the North Fork (Greenport) or the South Fork (Sag Harbor). No ferry reservations are required. Whether arriving by car or as a walk-on passenger, the anticipation builds as you approach this coastal sanctuary. The ferry glides across the water, and suddenly, you’re transported to a place where time slows down and worries dissipate.
CLASSIC LUXURY
Of all the places on Shelter Island, Pridwin Hotel and Cottages is most highly recommended. First established in 1927 and recently renovated in 2022 as part of a partnership with Cape Resorts, it combines classic luxury with modern amenities and perks.
Upon entering the main lobby, the visitor is met with the nautical theme, highlighted by a large model ship next to a comfortable seating area with a full water view. Within reach of the especially friendly concierge desk is a game area with a ping-pong table and a retro video game console. A small gift shop offers souvenirs, necessary supplies, designer-quality sundresses, and T-shirts.
The accommodations range from guest rooms that follow the nautical theme throughout to most of which have views of Crescent Beach. The Pridwin provides all the comforts one expects from a luxury hotel, from the marble counters in the bath and oversized showers to the quality mattresses and soft linens. For more elbow room, the cottages are available in seven unique styles and boast gas fireplaces, private balconies, and kitchenettes.
Terrace Restaurant at the Pridwin offers indoor and outdoor dining overlooking Cresent Beach. The menus are eclectic and classy, with a slight focus on the tastes of the sea. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served with charm and ambiance. Put the diet foods aside and indulge in the dessert menu, including dessert cocktails.
A short walk past the concierge is Pridwin Spa, offering a massage menu that includes couples, deep tissue, classic, customized, and prenatal; hydrating wrap; sea salt exfoliation; organic facials; and more. The tranquil setting, dry sauna and steam room, and tasty/refreshing snacks in the relaxation room add just the right ingredients to a weekend getaway of pure indulgence.
GRAPE ESCAPES
In the spirit of the East End, visitors returning to the big city might stop at a few of the respected wineries along the way.
Sparkling Pointe Winery Here wines are sustainably grown on three vineyard sites comprising forty acres within the North Fork of Long Island American Viticultural Area. A maritime climate tempered by two bodies of water, the Long Island Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean, provides long, warm summers with cooling breezes and moderate rainfall.
Macari Vineyards The property has sweeping naturalistic gardens surrounding two modern farmhouse-inspired buildings with dedicated tasting rooms, outdoor decking, and patio spaces for celebrations. Each setting is ideal for corporate retreats, product launches, and wedding receptions.
Pindar Vineyards This vineyard has more than three hundred scenic acres. Twenty varieties of grapes produce some twenty-three varietals and proprietary blends. The vineyard produces 70,000 cases of wine a year, making it the largest on Long Island.
If you are visiting Pridwin this fall, take advantage of a special visitor package: Fall Murder Mystery Weekend, which runs from October 25th through October 27th. Guests will participate in a maze of clues and riddles throughout the weekend.
Lenz Winery This Classic Long Island winery that offers some world class Old Vine wines that consistently stack up with impressive scores in blind tastings against legendary California and European vineyards. Following a high touch philosophy to maintain some of the most mature vines in the area ensures quality grapes and quality wines. We love “Dinner in the Vines” timed with their annual fall harvest celebration. This event is a true collaboration of local chefs, partnering with local wine producers to wine and dine you with a 5-course wine dinner, all served in the middle of the Lenz vineyards.
Bedell Vineyards Once you taste these delectable wines you will agree why they’ve received many rave reviews. Beyond the quality, green farming techniques and sleek design, Bedell features the amazing outdoor patio overlooking the expansive vineyard. When the cooler temperatures arrive, look for tastings in front of the cozy fireplace. Wine club members have their privileges here when it comes to events and pricing so take advantage!

DISCOVER SAILROCK
A TURKS & CAICOS PRIVATE PARADISE
By Jenny Peters | Photos courtesy of Sailrock Resort
Close your eyes and imagine your own beachfront villa overlooking aquamarine waters, nearby coral reefs, and powdery white sand. A whole house, with plenty of room for your family, a gaggle of friends, just the two of you, or even a solo getaway on a secluded tropical island—can you see it in your mind’s eye? Next, envision an easy nonstop flight to Providenciales (on JetBlue or United) from JFK or Newark and a quick small-plane puddle jump to this incredible place, and you’ve got the picture of escaping to Sailrock Resort, nestled on South Caicos Island in Turks and Caicos.
South Caicos, where Sailrock is located, is a world away from the typical Provo and 12-Mile Beach experience. The island’s rich history and vibrant local culture are a stark contrast to the bustling resorts of Provo. Here, you can immerse yourself in the local community, learn about the island’s traditional crafts, and even participate in cultural events. This secluded yet sophisticated place is designed to make you feel a million miles away from the real world, even when this resort that offers suite stays and villas for only 140 guests is completely full.
PLENTY TO DO
The villas have such a private feel it’s as if you’ve been transported to your island, complete with bicycles, ATVs, kayaks, SUPs, and snorkel equipment to explore both land and ocean (it’s on the Atlantic, not the Caribbean), and mangroves. There’s a plethora of activities to indulge in, from tennis, pickleball, and beach volleyball to fly fishing and bone fishing.
You can sail away in Hobie Cats or embark on private scuba diving trips to explore the warm, pristine waters surrounding this little slice of paradise. Think black-tip sharks, stingrays, spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and beautiful corals, all just a quick boat ride away. The mangrove lagoon on the northern peninsula of South Caicos Island is another place to spot those gorgeous stingrays as you paddle via kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Just keep your eye on the water as you drift along. You might even spot a sea turtle here on the Caicos bank!
Birds are everywhere, too, and they’ll join you on the sandbar that forms during low tide. Take a walk across and do a little shell searching here; the birds don’t mind if you meander nearby for a photo op, as they know you’re just stopping to admire their beauty. And watch for the wild donkeys all over the island, who practically grin for your camera
SOOTHE BODY & SOUL
When all the active outdoor pursuits found across this beautiful island prepare you for some help to heal all those muscles you haven’t been using back home, the Sailrock Spa is ready. Imagine, again, making your way (via buggy) to one of the island’s high points, overlooking mangroves and the cerulean, blue water, to discover the resort’s Ridgetop Spa Cabanas. Sea breezes blow as you settle onto a massage table and experience a deep tissue, Balinese, or Thai massage treatment. If it sounds like bliss, it is. This is not just a spa, it’s a luxurious retreat for your body and soul.
Of course, you can forget all that exercising and hang out by your villa’s private swimming pool, sipping rosé all day and calling room service now and then to deliver some nibbles if that’s your idea of heavenly bliss. If cooking is your jam, ask ahead to have your full-size kitchen stocked with local seafood and other delicacies and do the work yourself.
DINING PLEASURE
Or, as most of us on vacation prefer when it comes to food, let Sailrock’s talented chefs create culinary delights with Caribbean-influenced dishes served at The Cove and The Great House, the resort’s two casual gourmet restaurants, or in your villa, with ever-changing menus that rely heavily on local seafood (think conch salad, fish fritters, ceviche, blackened fish) and also serve up jerk chicken, big steaks, burgers, and vegetarian choices, there’s always something good to eat here.
Don’t miss the weekly beach grill night, when supper is served on the beach, pairing grilled foods, sunset, soft sand, and an after-dinner bonfire complete with all the fixings to make your s’mores. And if you want to hang out until the brilliant sky of stars comes out, home is just a short meander away, no matter when you decide to leave the beach.
If leaving this beach and returning to reality makes you feel lonely, consider this. Sailrock also offers private ownership possibilities, so the fantasy of escaping permanently to a perfect island home could become a reality here.

REDWOODS & VINEYARDS
MENDOCINO’S NATURAL SPLENDORS
By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
Anyone who has driven along the California coastline knows how beautiful the scenery is. The warm, sunny beaches of Southern California, the dramatic bluffs of Big Sur, and the impressive rocky coastline in Marin County north of San Francisco have been some of our favorite coastal scenes.
However, a recent visit to the Mendocino area revealed some of the state’s wild and scenic coastal beauty. Throw in the many wondrous groves of old-growth redwoods and the liquid assets of the bucolic Anderson Valley, and you will agree that the 3-hour drive from San Francisco was well worth it.
CLASSIC INNS
The Little River Inn is one of the oldest lodgings on this beautiful stretch of coastline. It faces the setting sun and offers incredible ocean views. The centerpiece of the property is a stately Victorian building surrounded by lush gardens. Many of the sixty-five luxury units feature fireplaces, wet bars, Jacuzzis, steam showers, and private hot tubs. The Inn has won numerous awards from Conde Nast and USA Today
Dining at Little River Inn is both classic and creative. Chef Marc Dym creates dishes that are familiar and modern while at the same time demonstrating his creativity. We enjoyed a classic Grilled Flat Iron Steak and a Brazilian Seafood Stew Moqueca. The Whale Bar’s character says a lot about the Inn--welcoming, unpretentious, and relaxed.
The Inn’s 9-hole golf course, tucked among the hills, pine trees, and redwoods, encourages keeping the ball in play. But the views make even errant balls worth it. You can enhance your stay with a spa service, as the Inn’s Spa offers a full array of massages and facials. Info:littleriverinn.com
Brewery Gulch Inn Another excellent choice for a stay in Mendocino is the Brewery Gulch Inn. Combining history with contemporary comforts, the Inn is a marvelous display of redwood craftsmanship. Numerous details displaying the warmth and character of redwood are evident throughout the redwood-shake Inn.
The reception room features a soaring glass and steel-faced wood-burning fireplace, which also serves as a centerpiece for the inviting Great Room and serves as a perfect spot for gathering for an outstanding cooked-to-order breakfast and the evening’s wine hour, including a generous selection of light bites, are served complimentary for guests. Creatively prepared small plates are uniquely served in Bento boxes, allowing guests to choose their dining location – the Great Room, the back deck, or in front of the fireplace- in the privacy of their room. The pan-roasted Pacific Rock Cod and Thai-style Chicken Curry are outstanding.
The ten guest rooms (eight with private redwood decks) all have an ocean view, a gas fireplace, a cozy seating area with leather club chairs, and high-quality amenities. The Inn’s stand-alone Massage Pavilion creates a perfect atmosphere for massages and yoga sessions.

INVIGORATING ACTIVITIES
A visit to the Mendocino area begs for the exploration of its state parks for their natural beauty. Russian Gulch State Park’s rugged beauty rivals any point along California’s coast. Hike Fern Canyon in Van Damme State Park for exquisitely tranquil scenes of fern groves and towering redwoods. Mendocino Headlands State Park, with its sheer bluffs, surrounds the small town of Mendocino on three sides. The town, known for its art galleries, shops, and inns, is the essence of quaint and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Paddle or pedal in the natural beauty of Mendocino’s Big River Estuary with Catch a Canoe & Bicycles Too. This full-service outdoor shop has a wide selection of kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and bicycles, and its specialty is authentic redwood outriggers. These ultra-stable canoes are made locally from reclaimed old growth and are kid- and pet-friendly.
Be sure to ride the world-famous Skunk Train. The train is a popular attraction, taking riders from the coast into the redwood groves. For a unique experience, take the 7-mile Redwood Route on a Skunk Train railbike.
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are a must for any horticulture enthusiast. Located on forty-seven acres from California Highway 1 to the Pacific Ocean, this magnificent site includes manicured gardens, canyons, coastal bluffs, and wetlands.
WINE COUNTRY
Everyone knows that California is a wine country. And with 11 AVA’s (American Viticultural Areas), Mendocino County isn’t about to take a back seat to its more well-known wine neighbors in Sonoma and Napa. Notable among these areas is the Anderson Valley. It is wine country as it used to be—approachable, intimate, uncrowded, and primarily owner-operated.
We enjoyed—and highly recommend—two tasting experiences in the Valley. Our tasting with Guy Pacurar, owner and “dad” of Fathers + Daughters Cellars, was private and unique. “Taste at the Top” is an intimate session with Guy sipping great wines on a hilltop overlooking the vineyard.
Another of the many vineyards and tasting rooms along Route 128, “the Wine Road to the Mendocino Coast,” is Lula Cellars, a boutique winery in the revered “Deep End” of Anderson Valley. We especially enjoyed their handcrafted Pinot Noir wines.

MAXIMIZING YOUR HOME’S APPEAL
AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO PREPARING FOR A SALE
By Patricia Canole
First impressions will always make a difference. It even applies to selling your home. Properly preparing your residence for sale will significantly impact the sale price and your home’s time on the market. We asked several real estate insiders for tips on preparing a home for sale, who provided some essential steps to make your home irresistible to potential buyers.
Declutter This involves removing excess furniture, personal items, and accumulated clutter over the years. The goal is to create a neutral atmosphere for potential buyers. Start by going through each room and removing any non-essential items. This might include family photos, personal mementos, and excess decorations. Don’t forget to organize closets and storage areas, as buyers will likely inspect these spaces. If necessary, rent a storage unit to house items you want to keep but don’t need in the home during the selling process.
Deep Clean A spotless home sends a message to buyers that the property has been well-maintained. Invest time in a thorough, deep cleaning of your entire home. This includes often-overlooked areas such as baseboards, light fixtures, and window treatments.
Pay special attention to kitchens and bathrooms, as these areas can make or break a sale. Address any lingering odors, which can be off-putting to potential buyers. A good bet is to hire professional cleaners for the best results--especially carpets and upholstery. Clean windows inside and out to let in maximum light and showcase your home’s views.
Make Necessary Repairs Before listing your home, address any apparent repairs or maintenance issues. Fix leaky faucets, replace burnt-out light bulbs, and repair loose doorknobs or cabinet hardware. If there are any known structural issues or significant system problems (like HVAC or plumbing), consider addressing these before listing. While it may require an investment, it can prevent deals from falling through later due to inspection findings.
Update + Refresh Giving your home a fresh, updated look can significantly increase its appeal. Start with a fresh coat of neutral colors of paint throughout the interior. This simple step can make your home feel clean, bright, and move-in ready. If your light fixtures, cabinet hardware, and plumbing fixtures need to be updated, consider updating them. These changes can give your home a more modern feel. Updating old appliances, especially in the kitchen, can be a selling point if your budget allows. Remember about flooring: Hardwood flooring should be refinished. If your carpet is worn or stained, replace it with a neutral, high-quality option.
Enhance Curb Appeal Don’t forget the exterior. It’s a potential buyer’s first impression. Start by ensuring your lawn is well-maintained: mow regularly, trim bushes and trees, and add colorful flowers or plants to create visual interest.Clean or repaint your home’s exterior if necessary. Pay special attention to the front door and entryway, as buyers will pause before entering the house. A fresh coat of paint on the front door and some potted plants can create a welcoming entrance.
Stage Your Home Proper staging can help buyers visualize themselves living in your space. Start by rearranging furniture to create an optimal flow in each room. Remove any excess pieces that make rooms feel cramped. Use neutral decor to create a cohesive look throughout the home. Highlight key features of each room, such as a fireplace or beautiful view. If your budget allows, consider hiring a professional stager to bring furniture and decor specifically chosen to showcase your home’s best features.
Professional Photography High-quality listing photos are essential to attract potential buyers. Also, consider adding a virtual tour or video walkthrough to your listing. These tools have become increasingly popular and can help your listing stand out.
Address Legal and Financial Matters Before listing, gather all necessary documents related to your home, including records of any significant repairs or renovations. Research local market conditions to ensure your home is priced competitively. Preparing your house for sale requires time, effort, and often some financial investment. However, the potential return on this investment can be significant in terms of a higher sale price and a faster sale.
By following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to presenting a home that stands out in the market and appeals to a wide range of potential buyers. Remember, the goal is to help buyers see your house as a property and their future home.

EMBRACING UNIQUE FACES
NONPROFIT
myFace CELEBRATES BEAUTY
& DIVERSITY
IBy Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
t’s safe to say that modern-day New Yorkers back the belief that our differences are what make us stronger as a city. As they say, New York is the ultimate Melting Pot; comprised of people from all walks of life, cultures, religions and geographies. Yet when it comes to unique, visual differences, stigmas persist. That is why myFace launched their most recent campaign, “myFace is Beautiful.”
For the last 73 years, myFace has been dedicated to transforming the lives of children and adults with craniofacial differences by providing access to comprehensive care, education, resources and support. The organization believes the world is stronger when every person is valued, respected, included, and empowered to achieve their greatest potential, regardless of how they look.
GETTING INVOLVED
It is that belief of inclusion and respect for all, as well as the need to educate the all-consuming public about craniofacial differences, which led to the “myFace is Beautiful” campaign. Featured on bus shelters and billboards in New York and New Jersey thanks to donations from JC Decaux and Lamar Outdoor, the campaign has been showcased in high traffic areas of Manhattan such as the Upper East Side, Penn Station district, Chelsea, and in areas of Brooklyn and the Bronx, as well as the New Jersey Interstates.
Having a craniofacial difference can mean living with painful scars; whether those are visible to all, or none, they are agonizing. Those scars, the emotional ones, are often the result of being isolated, or bullied. Believe it or not, despite the general consensus that our city is more inclusionary than it has ever been, there are still bullies out there who capitalize on even the most innocuous differences.
Sadly though, it isn’t just these bullies that can make life uncomfortable or painful for those with craniofacial differences. It is human nature to stare at things we either don’t understand, or don’t recognize. We’ve all done it; seeing someone who looks very different from the norm, often you cannot help but stare, sometimes through a “side stare.” And while there is no ill-will or intent, it is still painful for those impacted by facial differences.
BREAKING STEROTYPES
It is difficult enough for an adult to address and be comfortable with their own craniofacial differences; imagine being a child not able to control your facial expressions or even to look someone in the eye. Think about how alone you might feel as an adolescent in New York without being able to show your emotions; be it the classic Big Apple raised eyebrow, a soulful glance across a room, or even a smile to that special someone you want to meet. Growing up is difficult enough with all the hormones and challenges life throws at us. But the idea of not having a friend to play with or not knowing a single person who could relate to your experience is even more daunting. This is just one example of where myFace steps in to make a difference; with the community and network they have created that is safe, informative and provides resources to help.
Today, there are more than 600,000 Americans living with facial differences. And each year thousands more join their ranks, sometimes from birth, sometimes due to an accident, and sometimes from disease. So, meeting someone else with a facial difference can be a life-changing experience for the good.
They say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” and in the case of myFace’s Director of Family Programs, Dina Zuckerberg (who was born with a cleft lip, hearing loss, and blindness in one eye), she is a supermodel to everyone in the craniofacial difference community. Not only has Dina worked at myFace for over a decade, but she has also been the “face” of endless programs and community outreach to make a difference in the lives of those with craniofacial differences.
According to Dina, “When I was a young girl, I only wish I had the community and psychosocial support myFace provides today. I know firsthand that finding the courage to step out and face the world with a facial difference isn’t always easy. Which is why I feel so strongly that the support and resources myFace offers are so critical to individuals successfully navigating their life journey.”
Given the power of this campaign, and the importance of its message, don’t be surprised if we start seeing New Yorkers celebrate the beauty of these amazing people who have facial differences, every single day.

Dear Mindie,
I have been feeling very lost. My husband is very distant. The more I try to reach out and attempt to connect, the more he seems to pull away. He feels that I am nagging him. I know that is the case, but I am overwhelmed and frustrated with his empty promises about what he says he will do to help around the house and with the kids. I work full-time, too, but most household responsibilities seem to fall on my shoulders, and I am sick of it! I don’t want to end my marriage. I love my husband, but I am really at a loss. Please help!
Sincerely, Feeling Lost
Dear Feeling Lost,
I hear you loud and clear. When a partner isn’t living up to their end of the bargain, it can be hurtful and infuriating. I imagine it’s even more upsetting that he is saying he will help you and then is maintaining the same patterns. I am curious about how you are communicating your frustrations to your husband.
Many times, it’s not what we are saying but how we are saying it that can be a trigger to those around us. While you may be angry by his lack of household involvement (which is understandable!), expressing your feelings by criticizing and focusing on his role in the situation rather than how it makes you feel may inadvertently spark his withdrawal. When his promises are not followed through, that makes you feel hurt, and expressing how you’re feeling because of his actions rather than solely homing in on his actions will yield a better communication forum. Otherwise, it’s a push-pull conundrum that often ends up with less than favorable results.
This may seem easier said than done, especially in the heat of the moment. It may make the most sense to allow yourself the time to calm down so that you can speak with clarity and from a place of concern and authenticity in connection with your emotional pain and upset rather than from a place of anger and blame.
Doing so will enable your husband to see the situation more clearly from your perspective, without feeling threatened by confrontation, and he will realize his role in the maladaptive communication pattern and relent from his behavior of withdrawing.
This is a common communication web we call the demand-withdraw pattern. Demanders are known as the criticizers, often the females in a relationship, who are frustrated and eager to see some behavioral change in their partners. The withdrawing partner retaliates with avoidance and becomes defensive. The male persona and results typically lead this role in their lack of commitment to the relationship and desire to maintain the status quo.
The good news is that your issue is common among married couples and is fixable. The unwelcome news is that it isn’t always an easy fix. It requires some deep work and patience from both sides. My advice is to take the lead and try to speak to your husband from a place of calm concern and vulnerability so that he’s less likely to feel threatened and maintain his desire to withdraw as a defense mechanism.
He, too, must speak openly and nonconfrontationally and own up to his responsibilities and promises. I would recommend taking these steps and seeking the help of a marriage family therapist or professional clinical counselor if you’re not making headway on your own. It’s always beneficial to have a professional psychotherapist involved to serve as a strong advocate for maintaining the integrity of the relationship, even when you’re not in conflict. They can help you navigate tricky conversations and ensure both perspectives are articulated in a beneficial and productive way.
Best of luck!
Love, Mindie xo
YO1 LONGEVITY AND HEALTH RESORT
YOUR OASIS FOR LIFELONG VITALITY
By Michael Alpiner
Upon my second visit to YO1 Longevity and Health Resort—my first back in 2020—I felt the need to explore my wellness path more independently. The welcoming and knowledgeable front desk staff trusted my experience and allowed me to curate my visit. However, by the time I got to my room, Suzi, one of the front desk managers, with a beaming smile, arranged my spa treatments and refreshed my memory about the wealth of amenities and activities available for guests of the resort.
STAY
Each of the 131 rooms and suites offers guests a majestic view of Bailey Lake and the rural landscape of the Catskill Mountains. Though scenery is essential, it is also important that the rooms project an aura of relaxation and serenity. YO1 accomplishes this through its attention to comfort, from the spacious living space to the climate control to the luxurious steam shower. The shower has the potential for “stealing the show.” The rain shower head has excellent water pressure, and the ample shower space, with a marble sitting area, is transformed into a steam shower with the push of a button.
Of the three types of rooms, the king suites offer private balconies where you can lounge and listen to the sounds of nature while greeting the sunrise or watching the sunset. These rooms also boast a separate massage room with a separate entrance for the attendant. Certainly, the rooms supply the usual amenities, such as a small refrigerator, safe, ironing board and iron, lamps with plugs and USB ports, TV, etc., but the focus is more on calm and serenity through the natural colors, fresh air, tasteful art and artifacts, and the mountain landscapes.
EAT
Each meal is carefully designed for ultimate health. The vegetarian dishes, which are designed to boost one’s immune system, detoxify, and enhance the body’s recuperative powers, are created with locally sourced ingredients, such as fresh fruit and vegetables. The menu plan is drawn from the best elements of Naturopathy, Ayurveda, and raw food diets. During my stay, the menu highlights included vegetable soup, gnocchi, and a very tasty artichoke salad.
REJUVENATE
Massages are always popular, and at YO1, expert therapists address every aching muscle as well as focus on the way massage can reduce anxiety and depression. The most common therapies are Swedish, aromatherapy, hot stone, and deep tissue massage. For the more hardcore visitors, the following treatments are available:
Abhyangam A rejuvenating massage with select herbal oil involving various stroking and positions is a unique therapy in Ayurveda.
Podikizhi A relaxing sudation therapy that massages the body with muslin cloth pouches (potli) filled with various rejuvenating herbs.
Udhwarthanam An exfoliating powder massage therapy done using various unique herbs, by rubbing the powder upward against the natural flow of the hairs.
Shirodhara A calming oil-streaming therapy, Shirodhara is a unique form of ancient treatment in which oil is poured on the forehead continuously and rhythmically, allowing the oil to run through the scalp and into the hair.
Shiroabhyangam A gentle, rhythmic massage of the head, shoulders, neck, and face using authentic Ayurvedic herbal oils.
Padabhyangam A soothing, revitalizing, calming massage of the feet starting from the knees using unique pressure and technique to release negative energies from the body.
In addition, guests will understand the point when they select the acupuncture treatment. Skilled practitioners begin a conversation to pinpoint the treatment and best focus on it. The result is relief from pain and discomfort, including anxieties about life.
PLAY
On my first visit to YO1 Longevity and Health Resort, I stayed within the perimeter of the bricks. In truth, I was kept quite busy with a health regimen tailored precisely to my wellness needs. On my return trip, I left more to my own devices and augmented my health-related travel in the arms of Mother Nature.
Besides the nature trails that weave through the 1300 wooded acres, a simple walk along Bailey Lake will turn any visitor into a nature lover. Dragonflies flit above the young trees, landing at the top like so many holiday ornaments. Bees buzz amidst the vast fields of clover.
Female red-winged blackbirds cross the fields in search of gifts to bring back to the nest. If one is fortunate enough, bald eagles might be spotted gliding above the lake with talons poised for their prey.
The great takeaway is that a stay at YO1 is more than just the services offered, the caring staff, or the unique hospitality. One’s time at YO1 is an opportunity to center oneself through the senses, curated treatments, and the immutable beauty and tranquility of nature.

THE SEA FIRE GRILL
DIVE INTO NEW YORK’S SEAFOOD DELIGHTS
By Patricia Canole
If you’re a seafood lover, you’ve heard of Sea Fire Grill. This renowned restaurant has tantalized taste buds with its ocean-fresh delicacies and offers a dining experience that transcends the ordinary. At Sea Fire Grill the sea’s bounties take center stage.
Owned by Benjamin Prelvukaj and Benjamin Sinanaj, the same team overseeing Benjamin Steakhouse and Benjamin Prime in Manhattan, Sea Fire Grill is committed to sophisticated dining and conscientious service. Stepping into the restaurant, you’re immediately surrounded by a cordial, inviting atmosphere that perfectly complements the restaurant’s coastal-inspired cuisine.
The interior exudes a casual elegance, creating a relaxed yet sophisticated ambiance. From the lighting to the well-spaced, impeccably set tables, I knew it would be an evening of conviviality, immediately apparent by the greeting at the door to the amiable service of the pros in the dining room.
The menu is a true celebration of the sea’s diverse offerings. From succulent lobsters and tender scallops to flaky fish and juicy shrimp, each dish is prepared with a deep respect for the ingredients’ natural flavors. The culinary team shows an unwavering commitment to sourcing only the finest and freshest seafood.
BOUNTY OF THE SEA
One of the star attractions at Sea Fire Grill is the raw bar, where a tempting array of oysters, clams, and other raw delicacies awaits. Shucked to order, these briny beauties are the epitome of freshness, bursting with the essence of the ocean in every bite. Pair them with a crisp white wine or a zingy mignonette sauce for a truly sublime experience.
You may begin dinner with a selection of East and West Coast Oysters with a peppercorn mignonette cocktail sauce or a bountiful colossal shrimp or jumbo crabmeat cocktail. Tuna Tartare was fresh and delicious, made from yellowfin with a citrus crème fraiche, and the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake was moist and loosely packed with an enhancement of red pepper coulis, tartar sauce, celery root remoulade. The salads are also wonderful—the Beet Salad is a winner.
Sea Fire Grill serves sustainable and seasonal seafood: the lobsters are sweet and fat, weighing in at a hearty two pounds, and stuffed with crab meat, if desired, and clarified butter. A good thick swordfish caught off Montauk was juicy and subtly blackened with seasonings, served with tartar sauce and the novelty of avocado mousse. Yellowfin Tuna cooked was amazing and came with steamed bok choy, mustard greens, and sesame-soy vinaigrette. We noted that all the accompanying vegetables are chosen to complement the main protein.
MORE OPTIONS
For those seeking something more, the menu abounds with tempting options. The Nova Scotia Halibut, served with lemon gnocchi and beurre blanc, is a perennial favorite. The Mediterranean Branzino is a showstopper, arriving at the table with crispy skin and tender, flaky flesh that melts in your mouth.
Meat lovers need not despair, as Sea Fire Grill offers a selection of land-based dishes to complement its seafood specialties. The dry-aged Prime Ribeye is a carnivore’s delight, cooked to perfection and served with a decadent red wine reduction. And for those seeking a taste of both worlds, the Surf and Turf pairs a succulent Filet Mignon with shrimp and king crab. Don’t miss the Farm Raised Chicken expertly prepared with farro and mascarpone.
You won’t go wrong with any of the meant-to-be-shared side dishes, which include excellent, addictive French fries, cream of spinach, fingerling potatoes with leeks and truffle cream, truffle mashed potatoes with roasted garlic and Parmesan cheese, or lobster Mac and cheese.
SWEET SENSATIONS
A visit is not complete without indulging in one of their sumptuous, house made desserts. With its tangy custard and graham cracker crust, the New York Cheesecake is a refreshing and decadent way to conclude your meal. Or opt for the Crème Brulee or Tiramisu, both excellent choices and sure to please.
The restaurant has an extensive wine list and cocktails are always a special treat. Try the Thyme Will Tell, made with bourbon, thyme, Vermont maple syrup, and lemon (a perfect pairing for the heartier meat dishes), or Love Potion 2 & 1/3, with Absolut pear vodka, lychee, and passion fruit nectars.
But all that glamour doesn’t mean Sea Fire Grill can’t have a little fun and give its customers a real treat. Every day, between 4 and 7 pm, the restaurant serves Happy Hour with oysters and drink specials that are sure to please.
Of course, this popular restaurant is a beacon for seafood enthusiasts and discerning diners in a city teeming with culinary options. Its cosmopolitan vibe and modern interior create a pleasant and rewarding dining experience. Beyond the exceptional cuisine, Sea Fire Grill prides itself on its excellent service. The knowledgeable staff are well-versed in the menu offerings and are always available to provide recommendations or answer any questions.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, add Sea Fire Grill to your list of mustvisit dining experiences—your taste buds will thank you!

GREAT BITES
SEPTEMBER IS HARVEST
BLISS
TBy Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
hat incredibly delicious time of year known as autumn is arriving this month! Fall, or “Harvest” as many call it, is the best time in New York for produce and warm, rich flavors. From farms in the Hudson Valley to wineries and orchards on Long Island, the fall season is an incredible and fun time of year to explore our state’s natural food resources.
My passion for locally grown ingredients came from the Godfather of American cuisine himself, Chef Larry Forgione. Larry was James Beard’s protégé and is widely considered responsible for the surge in popularity of American fare during the mid-to-late ‘80s through the ‘90s. Larry was also a family friend for many decades, so I spent an abnormal amount of time at his legendary restaurant, An American Place. Larry was the first to really push the notion of farm-to-table for his restaurants, long before any other chef. His philosophy paid off given the quality and selection of produce in New York to service his then multiple restaurants (An American Place, 1766 Tavern at the Beekman Arms, Rosehill, etc). After all, New York State is home to some of the best produce in the world. Larry also helped to reinforce farm-to-table with his award-winning American Spoon Foods line of products. So, needless to say, I have a special place in my heart for harvest season in New York.
RIPE FOR THE PICKING
September and October is the largest produce picking time of year for our state. That means that you will find some of the most lush, robust and beautiful fruit and veggies you will ever see, right in our own backyard.
Let’s start with the most obvious, apples. After all, the Empire State is world-renowned for having the best apples. And since prime picking season is the month of September, you can look forward to plenty of apple sauce, apple cider, apple cider doughnuts, apple pie, and apple everything else!
Preparation
A REAL APPLE PIE
Speaking of Apple Pie, a lot of folks seem to be scared of making this iconic dessert, thinking it’s a complicated recipe. For this reason, I put together a very simple recipe I created a few years ago for this all-American favorite:
Ingredients
Pie Dough
• 2 ½ cups flour
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 ½ sticks butter, 1 1/2 sticks, cubed
• 8 tablespoons ice water
Filling
• 2 lbs granny smith apple, cored, sliced, peeled
• ¾ cup sugar
• 2 tablespoons flour
• ¾ teaspoon salt
• 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon
• ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
• ½ lemon
• 1 egg, beaten to create an egg wash
• 2 tablespoons sugar
Topping
• 1 scoop vanilla or coffee ice cream
In a medium-sized bowl, add the flour and salt, using a fork until well-combined. Add cubed butter. Break up butter into flour using a fork. Mixture will still have small lumps. Gradually add the ice water and continue to mix until the dough starts to come together. If the dough is too dry, add water, but you may not need all of the water. The dough should not be very sticky. Using your hands, work the dough together and then turn out onto a surface. Work into a ball and cover with saran wrap. Refrigerate.
Peel apples, then core and slice. In a bowl, add the sliced apples, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and juice from the lemon. Mix until combined and all apples are coated. Refrigerate. →
Preheat the oven to 375°F (200°C). On a floured surface, cut the pie dough in half and roll out both halves until round - about ⅛-inch thick. To make this easy, roll the dough around the rolling pin and then unroll onto a pie dish making sure the dough reaches all edges. Trim extra if necessary.
Pour in apple filling mixture and pat down. Roll the other half of the dough on top. Trim the extra dough from the edges and pinch the edges to create a crimp. Make sure edges are sealed together. Brush the pie with the egg wash and sprinkle with the sugar. Cut at least four slits in the top of the pie to create a vent.
Bake pie for 50-60 minutes or until the crust is golden brown, making sure no grey-colored or uncooked crust is left. Allow to cool completely before slicing. Top with ice cream and serve.
September also represents the end of prime picking for pears, berries, plums, prunes as well. It is the perfect time of year for other fruitbased pies, and the like.
Eat Your Vegetables
On the other side of the produce aisle, you have vegetables that are just coming into season like beans, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, and more. Normally I don’t like Brussels sprouts, a lot of folks don’t, but Cleo Restaurant in Los Angeles had an awardwinning “salad” that just rocked my world. It isn’t really a salad, but it’s close enough to be called one. This dish also happened to be the most popular at Cleo, so I spent some time reverse engineering it as it is also one of my all-time favorites for the fall.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS INSPIRED BY CLEO
RESTAURANT
Ingredients
• 12 Brussels sprouts
• Vegetable oil for frying
• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
• Salt and ground pepper
• 1 teaspoon chile flakes
• 1 tablespoon drained (oil-packed) capers, more if desired
• 2 tablespoons toasted sliced almonds, more if desired
Preparation
Separate the leaves from the Brussels sprouts using a paring knife. In a medium pot, add enough vegetable oil to come up to the sides of the pot by about 2 inches. Heat the oil until the temperature reaches 360 degrees.
While the oil is heating, you can make the vinaigrette. In a medium bowl, whisk together the olive oil and vinegar. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Now that the oil is hot enough, deep-fry the Brussels sprout leaves, a small handful at a time, and just until the leaves begin to crisp around the edges. About 20 seconds. Caution: Oil may splatter as the leaves are added. Remove the leaves immediately and drain on a paper-towel lined rack; using paper towels to gently press the leaves to remove excess oil. Continue frying the leaves, in small batches, until all of them are cooked.
To assemble the dish, place the leaves in a large bowl, add half of the vinaigrette, along with the chile flakes, capers, almonds and parsley. Gently toss, then taste and adjust the flavorings and seasonings as desired. You will want to serve this dish immediately so the leaves don’t lose their crunch.
CHEERS TO THE HARVEST
What harvest celebration would be complete without a harvest-inspired cocktail? Our friends at The Regency Bar & Grill at the Loews Regency came up with a brilliant recipe for our readers celebrating this year’s Harvest. And, if you are watching your alcohol intake, or prefer to not imbibe, all Loews Hotels have an amazing new program called “Free Spirited by Loews Hotels.” At The Regency Bar & Grill in the Loews Regency New York, just ask your server!
Tyme On The Hudson Ingredients
• 2 oz apple and thyme infused vodka
• 2 oz apple cider
• ¾ oz lemon juice
• ¼ oz maple syrup
Preparation
Mix and shake ingredients. Put into a rocks glass. Garnish with an apple slice and thyme. Yummo! Bon Appetit!
A FLAVOR ADVENTURE IN WILDWOOD
THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN NJ’S BEST RESORT TOWN
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman | Photos by Kelley Mason
Known as a resort town since the 1950’s, Wildwood, NJ is one of those timeless locales that you have to visit at least once in your lifetime, especially if you live in New York. From eateries, shops, waterparks and thrill rides to sandy beaches and irreplaceable memories, Wildwood has so much for so many. And that includes an incredible summer flavor adventure you can’t find anywhere else; MudHen Brewing Company, Dogtooth Bar & Grill and Poppi’s.
After a long day on the beach, or enjoying the water parks, visitors to Wildwood undoubtedly are looking for something unique, tasty and frosty to lower their temperatures after a day under the sun. So, our first stop on this journey is MudHen Brewing Company, a 15-barrel “BrewHouse” with 300 barrels of fermentation space; in other words, a beer lover’s paradise!
Featuring award-winning brews from local Brewmaster Tony Cunha, MudHen Brewing Company is not your average brewery, nor is it your average resort town outpost for pedestrian beach food. MudHen Brewing Company serves up southern-inspired BBQ with a hint of local flare. They serve cuts of meat, and various BBQ offerings, that would make the most successful Manhattan steakhouse or Southern smokehouse jealous.
Showcasing amazing BBQ and unique dishes, there is something for every palette at MudHen Brewing Company.
To start, our reviewers ordered the delectable Cheesesteak Cornish (six homemade pastries filled with chopped ribeye steak & American cheese served with cheese sauce), remarking at how fresh, creamy and robust the flavors were; BBQ Pork Dip (roasted pork, onions, roasted corn, cheddar cheese, homemade bbq sauce & cream cheese served w/ hen chips & crostini), commenting on the deliciousness of the outpost’s BBQ sauce and the juiciness of the pork; finishing their appetizers with a more traditional and delicious summer selection, Street Corn on The Cob (buttered sweet corn, cajun, queso fresco, chipotle crema & cilantro).
They continued their meal with another unique offering by attempting to tackle the delicious yet seemingly bottomless BBQ Meatlover Mac & Cheese (pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked brisket, homemade bbq sauce, béchamel cheese sauce & buttered breadcrumbs). One of our team went the more traditional route by ordering the brisket which, in their words, “blew the doors off of my palette with incredible flavors.” Rounding out the meal was a Toffee Cake that everyone agreed was sinfully delicious.
MudHen Brewing Company features a stunning outdoor garden and hosts live music and games throughout the season.

The next stop on our flavor journey is Dogtooth Bar & Grill. Located a block away from MudHen Brewing Company, Dogtooth Bar & Grill is the go-to spot for locals and tourists alike looking to enjoy the best of what Wildwood has to offer. Built on the notion of “Good food. Good beer. Great times,” Dogtooth Bar & Grill’s menu features a variety of delicious dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, from a mouthwatering burger to a hearty salad to a classic cocktail, this stunning and fun eatery has something for everyone.
Our reviewers went all-in on the variety of offerings at what can only be called the best “gastropub” in Wildwood. Our three team members reported nearly popping their belt buckles after finishing their delicious starters like Green Bean Fries (Spicy, panko-breaded, fried green beans served with chipotle ranch), Teriyaki Skewers (Three marinated & grilled chicken skewers served over Asian slaw), Pot Stickers (Six steamed dumplings filled with pork cabbage & green onions served with honey soy sauce), and Dogtooth Clams (15 clams in your choice of lemon white wine sauce or red sauce served with ciabatta bread for dipping). Not a single crumb, drop of sauce or clam was left, resulting in a euphoric feeling that can only come from a delicious, full meal.
For their main meals, our reviewers ordered The Original Pineapple Mango Crab Cakes (Two breaded & fried jumbo lump crab cakes topped with charred pineapple-mango salsa & chipotle aioli), Filet Mignon (8oz house-cut choice filet mignon), and the Shrimp, Crab and Artichoke (Shrimp, lump crab meat, artichokes & diced tomatoes tossed in a white wine sauce & served over angel hair pasta). Between the incredibly fresh crab cake with pineapple-mango salsa, the quality and juiciness of the filet mignon and the robust yet delectable flavors in the shrimp, crab and artichoke dish, all three diners asked when they can go back for another review! Of course that was helped by the fact that all three enjoyed filling in the cracks in their stomachs with the Choc Lava Cake (Chocolate cake with a rich melted chocolate center served with vanilla ice cream & whipped cream) which reportedly was one of the best they had ever had. Dogtooth Bar & Grill has an outdoor garden and features drink specials as well as DJ nights throughout the season. To learn more, please visit dogtoothbar.com
The last stop on this incredible Wildwood flavor adventure is a more traditional locale, Poppi’s Brick Oven Pizza & Kitchen. Yearning for a traditional Italian meal, our reviewers were chomping at the bit to try what many are calling the best Italian food in Wildwood. The trio sat in Poppi’s outdoor garden, taking in the fresh air. They started their meals with Fried Burrata (Creamy fried burrata cheese served with house crostini & Nonna’s marinara), Crispy Rice Balls (Three homemade arborio rice, smoked mozzarella cheese, marinara, panko-breaded & fried. Served with a side of lemon aioli and homemade marinara), and Fritto di Calamari (Fried squid tossed with parsley and parmesan cheese served with a side of lemon aioli and homemade marinara). The Burrata was so creamy that it left our reviewer speechless while the freshness of the cheese in the rice balls and the squid in the calamari floored the other two diners.
For their main dishes, our team enjoyed Poppi’s specialty, Margherita Brick Oven Pizza (San Marzano tomato sauce, homemade mozzarella, parmesan cheese, chopped garlic & fresh basil), the Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina (Homemade ricotta gnocchi, basil, and smoked mozzarella cheese with homemade marinara) and the Seafood Risotto (Arborio rice, sautéed shrimp, mussels, bay scallops and homemade pesto sautéed with basil and parmesan cheese in a white wine lemon garlic sauce). According to our diners, all three main dishes not only delivered on flavor and quality, but left them wanting to order more! Instead, the team decided to settle on two desserts to close out this adventure; Tiramisu (Lady fingers, layers of creamy custard & espresso topped with powdered cocoa) and Angioletti (Deep-fried homemade pizza dough strips drizzled with Nutella & topped with powdered sugar). Of course that didn’t help as our team could not finish their desserts, being too full from a delicious and robust, Italian meal. So they did what any other diner would do, took them home to finish their journey near their beds given the impending food coma from such a delicious series of meals. HOSPITALITY ICON DISRUPTS THE SPACE AGAIN
STRATIS MORFOGEN BRINGS BACK THE 24-HOUR DINER
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
If you dined “out” (i.e., dine in-venue, pickup, or delivery) at a different restaurant for all three meals every single day of the year, equating to 1,095 restaurants, you still would not have tried every venue in New York City. With over 27,000 restaurants in the Big Apple, you will have only sampled about 1/25th of the total. It’s important to note that roughly 80% of new restaurants close within their first year. So, this begs the question: “What does it take to compete on the world’s biggest plate?” The answer? Stratis Morfogen.
Stratis Morfogen has long been known as the “Disruptor,” or rebel, in the hospitality game. He literally redefined how New Yorkers, and Americans in general, look at upscale Chinese fare; helped shape the restaurant and bar scene in New York throughout the ’90s into the next decade, taking on the mob; opened one of the most successful steakhouse operations in the world; launched a wildly successful dumpling-specific franchise and authored two books! That doesn’t even include the dozens of other hospitality operations he has launched over his storied career. And even after some 35+ years in the business, Stratis is still making waves, this time by opening Diner24 in Gramercy a few months ago to breathe new life back into the very category where he started: the 24hour Greek diner.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have been friends with Stratis for over 30 years and I have been to every single restaurant, lounge, club, outpost and postage stamp he has launched in that time. Given the almost 40 years I have spent hanging and working with 5-star chefs, legendary restaurateurs and iconic venue owners, I can tell you that Stratis is one of those legendary icons. You must also understand Stratis Morfogen’s background to understand such a powerful statement.
BORN TO DISRUPT
Stratis Morfogen was born in Queens and grew up in Garden City on Long Island. Coming from a long line of restaurateurs, Morfogen spent much of his upbringing at his father’s fourteen restaurants around New York (a couple of which I was a customer). So, to say hospitality and restaurants are in his blood would be a significant understatement. At 19, Stratis began his entrepreneurial journey by launching concessions and restaurants at a Long Island amusement park. Using a loan of $25,000 from his father, Morfogen grew the business’ revenue seven-fold before selling it.
While Stratis’ father was known for his seafood and Greek restaurants, John Morfogen made an indelible mark on the tri-state community with his Queens and Long Island diners. “When I was a teenager, my dad used to say to me that he didn’t want me to work in the restaurant or diner business. He wanted me to work at Bear Sterns or Lehman Brothers. That’s what every dad wanted for their sons back then. Obviously, I didn’t listen. It was something we even used to laugh about. And then both went bankrupt. I think I made the right choice,” Morfogen extolled. Despite his father’s misgivings, they opened Hilltop Diner in Queens after seeing the success that Stratis worked so hard to achieve with the amusement concession business.
Diners typically keep healthy margins and prices low by offering a large variety of dishes that utilize the same ingredients (capitalizing on economies of scale by ordering ingredients in bulk to keep costs low). Diners are meant to be approachable, cost-effective restaurants with diverse fare offerings. So, living up to what will later become Stratis’ moniker, “disruptor,” Stratis and his father took a gamble by installing a “name chef,” Gabriel Moran, at Hilltop Diner. That generated a lot of buzz and helped Hilltop become one of the most successful diner operations in the US.
GROWING THE MORFOGEN LEGEND
That triumph led Stratis to open Gotham Diner on the Upper East Side in 1993 and Rouge nightclub a year later in Manhattan. In 1997, with internet search engines growing in popularity, Stratis became addicted to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) because of its power to affect change for a business. Morfogen used SEO to put the Fulton Fish Market online as a digital commerce brand that year. He has since used SEO in every business he has opened (especially his latest Diner24 operation). No other operator during that time used SEO to grow business this way, relying strictly on legacy marketing tactics.
It was around 2004 that Morfogen met celebrity chef Phillipe Chow, with the pair opening Phillipe on East 60th Street between Madison and Park Avenues a year later. It quickly became the country’s highest-grossing restaurant per square foot and redefined how we all look at and enjoy upscale Chinese fare. Unfortunately, in a notorious court case, Phillipe Chow’s former employer, Michael Chow of Mr. Chow’s, sued the pair. Morfogen not only won the Chow v Chow case, but Michael Chow also had to pay the $3.5 million legal tab Morfogen incurred as that is Florida law (where the lawsuit was brought). A few years after, Stratis split from the enterprise because he, in his own words, “didn’t want to partner with the convicted felons that are part of Merchants Hospitality, which was in negotiations at the time.” Despite the manufactured controversy by Mr. Chow’s, the industry fall-out from the lawsuit and Stratis parting ways with Phillipe Chow, Morfogen was not done with hospitality or with disrupting the status quo.
Only a few short years later, in 2016, music executive Robert “Don Pooh” Cummins approached Stratis about opening an upscale brand at a space he owned in FiDi. “I didn’t want to just open another Chinese concept. I also wanted to prove that steakhouses still have life in them despite so many closings. But this had to be something different, something special,” said Stratis. Combining the flavors of a traditional steakhouse with Chinese flare is what that “something special” is, celebrity favorite Brooklyn Chop House (BCH). BCH has now grown to two large locations with waiting lists for reservations and several outposts opening across the globe in the next couple of years.
FIGHTING FOR THE LITTLE GUY
During the pandemic, he not only fed thousands of healthcare workers out of his own pocket, but he also took on disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo, former Mayor Bill de Blasio, Senator Chuck Schumer, and more for their COVID policies that were negatively affecting small business owners, particularly in the hospitality space. Morfogen also launched franchise operation Brooklyn Dumpling Shop (BDS) and released a book (Be a Disruptor: Streetwise Lessons for Entrepreneurs-from the Mob to Mandates; Skyhorse) while everyone else was home binging on Netflix.
“During COVID, we had government policy overriding common sense. How can a multi-location fast-casual burger chain get $10 million in forgivable PPP loans when they had a market cap of $1.5 billion, yet the thousands of mom-and-pop restaurants that filed for PPP loans were denied. Meanwhile, I fed over 8,000 healthcare workers, or heroes as we call them while getting Brooklyn Dumpling Shop open and finishing the book. The pandemic was the perfect time to disrupt the status quo in hospitality and get people together for a common good, helping small businesses to serve their customers,” the notorious operator said.
Brooklyn Dumpling Shop is now in partnership with “Mr. Wonderful” himself, world-renowned entrepreneur and Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary. That partnership resulted in BDS going public on the Canadian stock market, exponential growth of franchise locations, and a frozen dumpling retail line in partnership with music icon Patti LaBelle that is sold at Walmart, Stew Leonard’s and many other fine retail locations.
RETURNING TO HIS ROOTS
Last year, Stratis called me to inform me that he was returning to the diner business. With the number of 24-hour diners and old-school coffee shops closing, it didn’t surprise me that Stratis saw an opportunity to disrupt the market, being crazy enough to return to this business. And it is that crazy, that chutzpah if you will, that will make Diner24 a resounding success.
“I literally opened this business based on SEO. Diner24 has it all built-in with just the name. There are a million people searching for a ‘24-hour diner’ or’ 24-hour burger’ within a 30-block radius of our location. If even 10% of that traffic comes in for a meal, we will always be busy,” said Morfogen. And if 2 pm on a Thursday during a heat wave is any indication, given that every table in the diner is taken up, then I would say Stratis’ “crazy” is what dreams are made of for a venue.
Combining over 35 years of experience, Stratis is not only serving up classic diner offerings but also modern takes on those classics (including one of the most delicious smash burgers I have ever had, crazy and over-the-top milkshakes and more) as well as some unique dishes packed with flavor such as the BBQ lamb ribs in spicy honey. Diner24 also serves some of the most unique and delicious handcrafted specialty cocktails, as well as frozen cocktails (perfected during the pandemic at BCH and BDS). The service at Diner24 is top-notch, and Stratis leaves no detail unturned. Morfogen included elements of yesteryear diners like mini jukeboxes in booths with Bluetooth for your phone’s music, Coca-Cola branded napkin holders, and an old-school wall payphone to pump up the sense of nostalgia. And just like with every other operation Morfogen has launched, he is making tweaks along the way to perfection.
This fanboy has found his new regular haunt in Diner24. And I am not the only one. Due to the immense popularity of Diner24, Stratis has been fielding calls from other operators, franchise companies and investors wanting to open another outpost. Only time will tell, but it’s a safe bet that we will see much more from Diner24 in the coming years.
THE LEGEND
To this journalist, what cemented Morfogen as a true icon and legend isn’t just the immensely successful businesses he has owned and operated. It is the tenacity, passion, ethics and dedication he has always operated with alongside his compassion and love for our city, her People, and those who are fortunate enough to work for him.
When I first met Stratis in the early ’90s, I had already been to a couple of his father’s restaurants. Seeing what he did at Gotham Diner and having worked with him in a promotional capacity, I already knew what everyone else would eventually learn: Stratis Morfogen is the definition of an industry icon and the stuff of which legends are made.

It’s been 36 years since Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder (as Lydia) and Catherine O’Hara made the much-loved afterlife fantasycomedy Beetlejuice; now they are all together again, in what might just be the most long-awaited sequel in cinema history. For who doesn’t love Beetlejuice? We sure do, and love Burton’s inspired casting of Jenna Ortega as Astrid, Lydia’s teenage daughter who opens the Afterlife portal once again when the Deetz family returns to Winter River and their haunted house. Add in Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, and a crazy cast of dead folks and this one looks to be another keeper.

THE SUBSTANCE R
Winner of the Best Screenplay at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Coralie Fargeat’s dazzlingly satiric film The Substance is ready to make waves here in the States. Demi Moore lets it all hang out as a fading fitness guru who risks life and limb by injecting a substance designed to give her back everything her age has taken away, only to find what she wished for isn’t quite what happens. With inspired performances by Moore, as well as Margaret Qualley as her “better” self and Dennis Quaid as her completely creepy boss, this “body horror” flick will definitely shake you up.
Can George Clooney and Brad Pitt make movie magic together again?
With Wolfs, the two buddies are betting their own money that they can, as both are producing the flick. Written and directed by Jon Watts, who is best known for his Spider-Man movies made with Tom Holland and Zendaya, this action comedy pits the two against each other, each as a fixer who takes care of criminal messes. When both accidentally end up on the same job, they soon find they’ve got their own mess to clean up, and neither one likes that one bit.

What do Oscar nominees and Emmy Award winners do when they get bored? Well, if you ask Scarlett Johansson, Laurence Fishburne, Brian Tyree Henry, Jon Hamm, Steve Buscemi, and Keegan-Michael Key, they’d all have to say, “Make an animated movie!” For that’s just what they all did, as vocal stars of Transformers One, along with Chris Hemsworth, who plays Optimus Prime opposite Henry’s Megatron in this big-budget film designed for kids as well as adults who love the Transformers franchise.
Based on the best-selling book written for kids by Peter Brown, this animated feature from DreamWorks has an all-star vocal cast that includes Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as Roz the robot. With a story that captured so much imagination that it hit number one on The New York Times bestseller list, the filmmakers and animators are hoping this one is the start of another lucrative movie franchise. Pedro Pascal, Stephanie Hsu, Bill Nighy, Ving Rhames, and Catherine O’Hara are all here too, lending voices to this action-adventure tale of a robot lost on a wild island.

TELL ME EVERYTHING: A NOVEL
By Elizabeth Strout
Random House
From Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout comes a hopeful, healing novel about new friendships, old loves, and the human desire to leave a mark on the world
Elizabeth Strout returns to the town of Crosby, Maine, and to her beloved cast of characters—Lucy Barton, Olive Kitteridge, Bob Burgess, and more—as they deal with a shocking crime in their midst, fall in love, and yet choose to be apart, and grapple with the question, as Lucy Barton puts it, “What does anyone’s life mean?”
It’s autumn in Maine, and the town lawyer, Bob Burgess, has become enmeshed in an unfolding murder investigation, defending a lonely, isolated man accused of killing his mother. He has also fallen into a deep and abiding friendship with the acclaimed writer Lucy Barton, who lives down the road in a house by the sea with her ex-husband, William. Together, Lucy and Bob go on walks and discuss their lives, fears, and regrets, and what might have been. Lucy, meanwhile, is finally introduced to the iconic Olive Kitteridge, now living in a retirement community on the edge of town. They spend afternoons together in Olive’s apartment, telling each other stories. Stories about people they have known— “unrecorded lives,” Olive calls them—reanimating them and, in the process, imbuing their lives with meaning.
Brimming with empathy and pathos, Tell Me Everything is Elizabeth Strout operating at the height of her powers. She illuminates how our relationships keep us afloat. As Lucy says, “Love comes in so many different forms, but it is always love.”

FALL STREAMING GEARS UP
WHAT’S NEW & HAPPENING
By Patricia Canole
Fall 2024 is here, and with it some significant shifts and exciting new offerings in the streaming world. With an increasing number of consumers cutting the cable, competition on the growing number of platforms is at an all-time high. Here’s a look at what major players have in store for viewers in the coming months plus a peek into the future.
NETFLIX: Pushing Boundaries
Netflix continues to lead the pack in subscriber numbers, but the streaming giant isn’t resting on its laurels. This fall, they’re set to unveil a groundbreaking AI-powered recommendation system that promises to revolutionize content discovery. By analyzing viewing patterns and social media activity, Netflix aims to offer hyper-personalized suggestions. The platform is also doubling down on interactive content. Following the success of earlier experiments, Netflix will launch an ambitious interactive drama series that allows viewers to influence the storyline across an entire season.
Also look for the much-anticipated His Three Daughters the drama starring Elizabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon and Natasha Lyonne will debut on Netflix in mid-September 2024. Azazel Jacobs is behind the title that sees the three sisters returning to New York to care for their ailing father.
DISNEY+: Expanding Universes
Disney+ continues to leverage its powerhouse franchises while exploring new territories. This fall, several highly anticipated series set in the Marvel and Star Wars universes will premiere, including a gritty, noir-inspired take on a beloved superhero and an animated series exploring the far reaches of the galaxy. Look for Marvel Television live-action series, Agatha All Along, focuses on Agatha Harkness, from acclaimed Marvel Studios.
In a surprising move, Disney+ is also venturing into live event streaming. The platform will broadcast several major concerts and sporting events exclusively, starting with a global music festival featuring some of the world’s biggest pop stars.
AMAZON PRIME: Gaming Integration
Amazon is making waves by further integrating its Prime Video service with its gaming division. Subscribers can expect exclusive in-game content for popular titles tied to Prime Video’s original series this fall.
On the content front, Amazon is investing heavily in original productions. Look for Totally Killer, a comedy-horror film, starring Kiernan Shipka who travels back in time to 1987 to stop a murderous rampage before it happens.
APPLE TV+: Quality Focused
Apple TV+ continues to prioritize prestige content over quantity. Their fall slate includes limited series featuring A-list Hollywood talent and thoughtprovoking documentaries. The platform also leverages Apple’s technological prowess, with plans to introduce enhanced 3D audio experiences for selecting content and seamless integration with the company’s AR glasses, which are rumored to launch later this year.
PEACOCK: Sports Streaming & More
Comcast’s Peacock is doubling its sports offerings, with plans to stream several major sporting events exclusively this fall. The platform also capitalizes on its NBCUniversal connection with spinoff series and reunion specials for beloved sitcoms and dramas from the network’s archive. With innovative technologies, diverse content strategies, and a focus on user experience, streaming platforms are redefining how we consume and interact with media.
PARAMOUNT PLUS: More Original Content
The platform is expected to double down on its successful franchise expansions, particularly in the Star Trek universe and Taylor Sheridan’s productions. Original content remains a priority, with a focus on high-quality series and films featuring top talent. Interactive and immersive experiences may debut, pushing the boundaries of traditional streaming. The service is likely to increase its international content offerings, catering to a global audience. Sports coverage, particularly NFL games, will continue to be a key differentiator.
HAPPY COMES HOME
A FELINE LOVE STORY
By Stephen Quandt
Ilive for people to be happy with their cats, and most are very happy. But some people have cats with behavior challenges. My life goal, almost a romantic calling, is to create a happier world for cats and the humans who love them. I started working with cats and clients in 2002. In time, I began working for the ASPCA and now I work at one of the largest open admission shelters in the country, the Animal Care Centers of NYC, a wonderful and progressive organization that transforms the lives of thousands of people and animals every year. I also work privately with clients to help them and their cats be the happiest they can be. It is deeply personal for me to help with these connections, these people and their cats.
As I worked on professional development, getting a certification in feline training and behavior and creating a business outside of the shelter where I work, a friend of mine, James Gaynor, came to me with an idea. He said, “Why don’t you write a children’s book about cat behavior?” His idea was about reaching young people and their parents with easy lessons about cat behavior. To show them how to help their cat be the happiest cat ever, when sometimes that can be a challenge.
UNDERSTANDING THE FELINE
Cats are, in some ways, almost wild animals and even though they’re domesticated and socialized, they still have predatory instincts that need to be understood and often redirected. So, I got together with my husband Thom Heyer, an artist and illustrator, our friend James, and another good friend, Mary Trudel, and we basically workshopped “Happy ” The premise is we have a family: mom, dad and their child, Avery, who all want a cat (Avery most of all!). They go to a shelter and find a wonderful cat named Happy. They adopt Happy and bring this cute cat home, imagining all the wonderful things Happy would do, like stretch out on the sofa purring, sleep at the foot of Avery’s bed, and eat yummy food while the family ate dinner. But when they got Happy home, it was a “cat-tastrophy!” Happy scratched up the sofa, stole the family’s dinner and woke the parents up in the wee hours of the night. The parents wanted to return Happy, but Happy was Avery’s best friend, so something had to be done.
The family did some online research and found a certified “Catsultant” named Mr. Top Cat, who coincidentally resembles a feline version of myself. Mr. Top Cat appears at the door to help set things right. What follows are a series of easy-to-take-in teachable moments that help guide the family and Happy so that everyone can be the happiest versions of themselves. Mind you, Happy has always been a super happy cat, just a cat without manners.
Thus begins the adventures of a cat, a child, and a family trying to find the happiness so many of us seek with our feline friends. Would Happy be allowed to stay? Would Happy settle down? The answers lie in the bond between Happy and Avery and the common-sense behavior tools Mr. Top Cat brings to the family using his deep understanding of cats’ nature.
A LABOR OF LOVE
The process of creating this book was a deep collaboration with Thom. He would tell me when a phrase was awkward or unclear. I would offer feedback on Thom’s illustrations, sometimes in a strident voice, saying, “Where’s Mr. Top Cat’s Tail?” or “We really need a scratching post here.” This would always cause him more work, but what’s important is telling the story.
Thom and I were theater designers in the past—he was a costume designer, and I was a lighting designer, so we were both very concerned with narrative. With Happy Comes Home, we also consciously wrote a story without gendering Avery or Happy. We didn’t do this to make a statement; instead, we allowed children to make their own decisions. Is Avery a boy or a girl, or is Happy a male or female cat? That’s up to them to decide. Writing dialogue without using gender is very tricky. It’s easy to end up with word salad! Ultimately, every cat wants to be understood and wants a cozy spot to lay their head and purr. Happy was home.
Stephen Quandt is the founder of Stephen Quandt Feline Behavior Associates, LLC.
KATE PERRY
RENOWNED DOG TRAINER OPENS A NEW OUTPOST
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
As with child rearing, there are a lot of philosophies on how to train and raise a dog. From positive reinforcement to alpha dog to scientific training methods, each has its own reason for being. And usually new pet parents, and even seasoned pet parents, hire a dog trainer or a dog behaviorist to help them get their new furrever one off to the right paw. However, not all dog trainers are created equally. Many rely on shock and prong collars, or in leveraging “alpha dog” tactics. These methodologies usually fail, or backfire resulting in a call to another trainer, who will have to not only undo the emotional damage caused by the initial trainer, but also start a new training regimen.
The best method for this is positive reinforcement training. As that is her specialty, that is just one reason why Kate Perry has become one of the most popular, and respected, dog trainers in New York. And now Kate has a new home for her training classes, as well as a new daycare offering!
SEPARATION ANXIETY SOLUTIONS
For the last 25 years, Kate has operated her training business on a mobile basis, whether hosting private sessions in clients’ homes, or often partnering with locally owned pet stores, dog spas and daycare facilities to host her various classes. Kate always wanted to open a daycare facility that wasn’t just about babysitting but a trainer-led daycare that linked into her classes. Kate also wanted to provide training programming to her charges while pet parents are at work, running errands and more. Like many small business owners, Kate recognized an opportunity in post-COVID Manhattan, from both a real estate and need-state point of view. Kate opened the Kate Perry Dog Training & Daycare Center at 320 West 23rd Street in Chelsea this past May.
“With COVID ending, there were several commercial real estate deals that opened, which we couldn’t say no to. At the same time, we have seen a lot more dogs and their owners in need of training support, especially with separation anxiety. As companies began to insist on workers returning to their offices, we started seeing so many dogs acting out because they were used to having someone at home all day. Our new Center will help these pups find some peace, structure and fun all at the same time!” said Perry.
In case Kate’s name sounds familiar to you, yes, you have seen her name and Kate Perry Dog Training mentioned in our pages before. Kate Perry is the Official Dog Training Partner of our sister magazine, Pet Lifestyles Magazine (petlifestylesmagazine.com), and provides content for both magazines. I have also worked with Kate for over 15 years as she helped to train the last three dogs we have had, and she was on the Board of the animal advocacy charity my wife and I ran for 12 years, Rock & Rawhide. Aside from looking at her website (kateperrydogtraining.com) to learn more about Kate, you should look at Training for Both Ends of the Leash (Penguin) which Kate published in 2012 with Penguin Group USA and released an updated version two years ago. The book is available on all platforms. Yes, I am a fan. But I am also a lifelong rescuer and animal advocate, so you should be assured knowing that I will only recommend the best for your furrever one!
PUPPY-SPECIFIC
STRATEGIES
What makes the Kate Perry Dog Training & Daycare Center so attractive to pet parents is that at normal daycare facilities, your dog will often come home with some bad habits they may have developed while playing with other furrever ones throughout the day. At the Center, that doesn’t happen. Each dog is carefully monitored and guided throughout the day by Kate and her team of trainers, most of which graduated from Animal Behavior College who Kate works with to mentor students.
The Center sends a daily “pawgress report” folder to all whose pups are at daycare for the day, which contains video clips and pictures of the dogs working, napping, hanging out or even having zoomies. The Center has four separate but connected areas, so that they can allow the dogs different, compatible matchups for play or chilling. We also use the four areas to cater to Kate’s “Four Canine-ality Types” that are featured in her book: Sensitive Artist, Party Animal, Workaholic and Methodical Thinker. Kate and her team believe that when training and daycare join hands, pups get far more out of it. Kate calls this “Boarding School for Dogs.”
The Kate Perry Dog Training & Daycare Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 6:00pm.
ENTREPRENEUR’S CORNER
FRANK KABATAS: THE RISE OF NYC’S PIZZA MOGUL
By Jenna Guarneri
Frank Kabatas is the owner of East Village Pizza, a popular New York-based pizzeria where tradition meets innovation. Here is where Frank went from being a delivery driver in 1997, being fired after just six months, to later becoming the pizzeria’s owner in 2003, highlighting his passion for the craft and his embodiment of the power of hard work and determination.
With nearly three decades in the industry, Frank has made East Village Pizza a cornerstone of NYC’s pizza culture and a landmark destination known for its innovative and high-quality pizzas. This commitment to excellence shines through in every pizza he creates, as he continuously experiments with flavors and techniques, always striving to deliver the best possible product to his customers. His leadership and passion continue to make East Village Pizza a cherished destination celebrated for its unique and delicious pizzas.
New York Lifestyles had the opportunity to sit down with Frank to discuss his career journey. Here’s what he shared.
What did you aspire to be when you were growing up and before immigrating to the United States?
I first arrived in the US from Turkey when I was 23. I was still a student when I came here, and I did not have the typical work experience that American students often do. Back then, my focus was solely on studying, and I aimed to become a computer specialist, which was growing in popularity then. Never did I imagine I would end up entering the food industry!
What sparked the idea of opening your pizzeria? Was there a particular moment or experience that inspired you? When I first arrived in 1997, I barely spoke English–only the basics of ‘yes’ and ‘no’. I needed to go to school to learn the language and a way to earn money, so I quickly set out to find a job. That’s where my journey with East Village Pizza began. I got hired to work as a delivery driver but was fired after only six months. I didn’t let this setback deter me. I continued working in the pizza industry, getting another pizzeria job, and juggling 12-hour shifts daily while attending school for five hours. I worked at another pizzeria in the East Village, where I learned how to make pizza, and then at a Domino’s on Long Island. I continued making pizzas and got promoted to store manager after eight months, which taught me much about business marketing.
New York City has an incredibly competitive pizza scene. How have you created buzz and cultivated customer loyalty for East Village Pizza?
My philosophy is simple: do one thing and do it right. So, if you’re making pizza, you must be passionate and know how to make it good–it needs your time, energy, and effort. You must know your market, understand people’s wants, and deliver something better. Although gaining customer loyalty takes years, it sets you apart from the competition and makes you a landmark. You must also be proud of what you’re putting out there. Quality is never a coincidence; it takes effort.
What has kept you enthusiastic and motivated throughout your entrepreneurial journey?
My dream gave me purpose, and that purpose gave me East Village Pizza. Throughout my journey, I’ve set goals for myself, striving to make the business a landmark NYC pizzeria destination for locals and tourists. I’m proud to share that East Village Pizza has achieved that status today becoming a beloved establishment.
What pivotal lessons stand out the most in shaping your approach to business and leadership?
If you continue to try to achieve your goals, the challenges never stop. My biggest challenges were during the beginning when I had to figure out how to run a pizzeria, create my recipes, source the ingredients, and find dependable employees to train. But running a business means that challenges don’t ever end.
Reflecting on everything you’ve accomplished, what moments are the most rewarding for you?
After all these years, hearing people talk about East Village Pizza on social media, in bars with friends, and in the neighborhood makes me incredibly happy. When people walk by and say this pizza place is really good, it makes me feel I’ve achieved my goal of making the pizzeria a landmark.
How have you leveraged social media to increase visibility and attract customers to East Village Pizza?
I started on social media in 2012, using Facebook and then Instagram, posting pictures of the pizzas I made because I was interested in them. People had laughed at me, saying Instagram was for personal photos, but I continued and started gaining followers worldwide. When Instagram introduced features like video posting and live streaming, I used those to show how I make and cook pizzas. These videos went viral, with over twenty million views. These videos went on to be featured on major Instagram accounts, which was exciting and helped me attract many new followers as an “Instagram famous” pizzeria.
Can you tell us about the process of developing your menu? How has it evolved, and what are your signature or favorite items?
When I started my journey with East Village Pizza, I knew some classic New York City recipes but continued experimenting in the kitchen. It took me over three years to perfect my Margherita Pizza–trying over twenty different cheese and sauce combinations. Now, Margherita Pizza has become one of of the bestsellers.
As we look ahead, what’s next for East Village Pizza? Are there any exciting new projects or expansions on the horizon?
There aren’t any expansion plans, but I’ll revisit the idea once I hit the 30-year mark. As for exciting new products, I recently debuted a fresh, non-fried eggplant pizza that’s been an enormous success. I’m always in my kitchen experimenting, so who knows, some surprising projects may be coming soon.

MY NEW YORK STORY
JOELLE GARGUILO
By Jenna Guarneri
Remember this name: Joelle Garguilo. She is the New Yorker making New York proud. A twotime Emmy Award-winning reporter and newly titled entertainment reporter for WABC, Joelle Garguilo is a powerhouse known for her dynamic personality and impeccable storytelling.
She has held multiple roles across the most prominent TV networks throughout her tenure. Most recently, she worked as an on-air entertainment and features reporter for New York Live, correspondent for E! News while contributing at Today with Hoda & Jenna and has covered some of the most significant entertainment events of this last year, including the Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1 premieres, the Met Gala, the MTV VMAs, and the Tribeca Film Festival, among many others. Joelle’s interviews have included celebrities like George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Jim Carrey, Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Julia Roberts, amongst many more.
One of the highlights of Joelle’s early career was a memorable red carpet-moment with Oprah Winfrey. During the brief time available for questions, Oprah remarked, ‘I can tell that you have it because that’s such a thoughtful question.’
As a dynamic storyteller and multimedia journalist whose passion for connecting with people drives her diverse career, Joelle also uses her platform for good by spotlighting extraordinary individuals and small businesses.
New York Lifestyles had the opportunity to catch up with Joelle and here’s what she shared.
This past February, you started a new role at WABC as the Entertainment Reporter. How did that come about?
So, the person in my role before was Sandy Kenyon, I’ve known him forever. He approached me and said that he would be leaving in a year, and he said, ‘I want you to go out for this job.’ I tucked it away and then February came and everything happened so fast. I had been on NBC for 15 years. Just months into this new gig, I am making it my own and feeling at home.
I know one of your first events after becoming the official Entertainment Reporter was the Oscars. Tell us more about this opportunity. My first assignment was covering the Oscars—what a way to start a job! It was intense but seeing it all come together was what I loved most. I didn’t sleep from Oscar night into the next day, staying up to watch the show, write scripts, report, and then prepare for the early show. Saying this out loud I’m just realizing that I’m living out moments I never knew were possible. I don’t even know if I let myself dream this big.
Having a big dream job, what is your advice for others looking to make a change?
It is incredible when you think about it. I would say it’s my unsolicited advice—just start. Just do it because you often see certain people who do get ahead, and you know what the difference is? They went for it! You owe it to yourself to at least try.
So, how did you get from accounting to entertainment? Where was the transition?
I was particularly good at math, so I went into accounting and went from KPMG to New Line Cinema as a financial analyst. I remember sitting next to the cool girls there who would always be talking about the latest movies, and I so wanted to be a part of that. When news of New Line shutting down broke, my boss took me out to lunch. I told her I wanted to try this TV thing, and she was the first to say, I think that’s a great idea. I signed up for the New York Film Academy, which changed my trajectory.
I had the opportunity to interview you for my book, You Need PR, and you said something insightful: “Social media is the new resume.” Is that how you discover many businesses you feature on air by finding them on social media?
Social media is so important. Storytelling is everything. So, it’s not about how many different jewelry stores there are, but about which ones have a specific story to share. Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to a reporter on social media and say, ‘I love your work; I’m a small business, and if you ever have a second, I would love to send you a pitch.’ And, of course, when you do that, make sure you’re following the person on social media!
You have two children, a husband and this fantastic job. How do you balance it all?
It’s hard to be a working mom, especially in New York, but I do try to be as present as possible and give myself grace. I was interviewing Celia Keenan Bolger the other day. She said that as a working mom, you can do it all, but not all at once.
That’s also about who you surround yourself with, right? When you find authentic people in the industry, it’s nice to have those people in your corner. Oh my gosh, yes. I am everyone’s biggest Cheerleader and Cheerleaders surround me. I know it isn’t always easy, but a positive mindset is so important, I’m working on that every day. Life is so much better when we all lift each other up, isn’t it?

The celebration underscored Stein’s solid connections and respect within the political community.
Looking ahead, Stein is excited to embrace the role of District Leader by focusing on grassroots organizing and voter mobilization. TIME OUT WITH…
JULIE DELUCCA-COLLINS
By Pippa Roberts
Julie DeLucca-Collins always knew she wanted to help others. Growing up in a family of educators, the value of service was ingrained in her from an early age, through the profound influence of her grandmother. This early inspiration led Julie to start her career as a preschool teacher. However, she yearned for something more, a way to create an even more profound impact for women.
Today, she is the CEO and Founder of Go Confidently Services, a company designed to uplift and support entrepreneurs with a specific focus on women in midlife. Her mission is to empower these women, who often face unique challenges, to confidently pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. She is a certified Tiny Habits Coach and top podcaster with Casa DeConfidence and is spearheading a cultural shift towards self-empowerment for women worldwide.
We sat down with Julie DeLucca-Collins to learn more.
Please introduce us to who Julie DeLucca-Collins is. Give us insight into your original story.
As a young girl, I always knew I wanted to help others. My grandmother was an incredible influence, instilling in me the importance of giving back and supporting others who needed my help. I started my career as a preschool teacher. I also knew that I wanted more for myself but was not sure what more was. A national educational company recruited me. After my first successful year as the center director of one of their local centers, I was promoted and began climbing the corporate ladder. My journey was enriched by incredible mentors who believed in me and helped me grow as a supervisor, manager, and then Senior Director, overseeing a whole new business line for the company. Through it all, I kept my desire to serve and help others as my driving force.
You’ve stated that your brand name, Go Confidently Services, was inspired by a quote about following your dreams. Tell us more.
My dad introduced me to Henry David Thoreau’s quote, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.” It became my mantra as I navigated my new career in corporate America, ultimately reaching executive and C-suite levels. Throughout the years, I encountered many talented women who struggled with confidence despite their gifts and talents.
You are a certified Tiny Habits Coach and Productivity Expert. What drew you to focus on productivity and tiny habits in your coaching practice?
As a coach, I’ve found that my most effective teaching comes from the areas where I once struggled. Productivity and habits were crucial aspects that I needed to master to gain success. Recognizing their impact on my life, I soon became fascinated and inspired to learn more about them. Soon, I began to see the connection and psychology behind habits and the science of productivity.
How do you define productivity, and what are the critical factors in helping clients overcome their productivity hurdles?
For me, productivity is more than just checking items off a to-do list; it’s about maximizing our actions and efforts with what matters. Productivity is the art of being a high performer, personally and professionally. One of the most common challenges my clients face is second-guessing or procrastination, which often stems from a lack of clarity on what matters or being inspired or fulfilled in their tasks. Overcoming these hurdles is not just about getting things done, but about gaining a sense of accomplishment and moving closer to our goals.
You’ve stated that obtaining your habits and completing your routines leads to an increase in confidence. Explain that concept. Everyone experiences feeling unsure or lacking confidence sometimes. We might doubt our abilities or feel like we’re not good enough. But we can see progress when we start doing things differently, like creating better habits. It’s like when you learn to ride a bike. At first, it’s hard, but the more you practice, the better you get. That’s where confidence comes in. Confidence and habits go hand in hand.
What is your advice for balancing a need for structure with a need for flexibility?
Balancing structure and flexibility are like finding the right mix of planning and spontaneity in our lives. At first, I thought having a plan and sticking to it would make life boring. But I’ve learned that having structure gives us more freedom to do what we want and love. It’s like having a map to guide us on our journey— we know where we’re going, but we can still take detours along the way.

THE FINAL WORD
CARS ARE NOT THE ENEMY
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
The “open road” is a phrase you don’t hear anymore. Then again, New Yorkers also don’t hear anymore about that beloved rite of passage when teenagers get their first taste of freedom; a driver’s license. I got my license before any of my contemporaries. It was amazing to be able to just get behind the wheel and get the lead out, so to speak.
Look, I have never hidden the fact that I was a hellion as a kid. I used to show up to my ridiculous all-boys private school on East 62nd Street and Park, dressed in all black, on the back of a Hell’s Angels Harley. So, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that I used to drag race on Bruckner Boulevard, the West Side Highway and many other locals around the city. And, yes, I did race for “pinks” in case you were wondering.
A DRIVER’S DESERT
Would I attempt to do any of this today? Hell no. First of all, the city is no longer calibrated for drivers thanks to a series of revenge tactics by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the incompetence of former Mayor Bill de Blasio. Second, there are red light and speed cameras everywhere (very 1984-esque). Lastly, this city is just not safe or fun to drive, or race, in anymore. There are far too many folks who seemingly had their driver’s license issued by Walmart (like half of the Uber and Lyft drivers these days), meaning that they simply have no concept of how to drive properly, anywhere let alone in New York City. You also have a city whose infrastructure has not kept up with modern technology, allowing for smoother, and faster moving, traffic (gee, I wonder why—could it be the MTA and Governor working behind the scenes to finally get their bribes, I mean congestion pricing done?).
LONGING FOR YESTERDAY
Long ago, before Bloombito, this city was fun and safe to drive in. In 2003, my wife’s family was visiting from Perth in Western Australia, so I drove them to see all of the tourist sites in the city, and some very not-so-tourist sites. Having them in the car, being able to pull over and look at details was a convenience and made touring that much more fun. We were also able to stop and take some great photos, even near Saks Fifth Avenue’s holiday windows! I wouldn’t even consider this today given that we lost over one third of our vehicular lanes in Manhattan and added over 80,000 for-hire vehicles thanks to Bloomberg. Of course, that creates more traffic (a manufactured crisis) and makes the city less safe for this kind of activity. To be honest, the transportation policies created and enacted in this city since 2002 have been deplorable in every way.
Back to being a teenager in the Rotting Apple; it is 2024 and fewer teenagers in New York than ever are getting their license. It seems to be dovetailing with the latest narrative out of Albany and City Hall: automobiles of any kind are evil. Apparently, teenagers in the city, and other parts of our nation, no longer view a driver’s license as that milestone of upbringing we all loved so much. Think about it; in 1988 a movie solely dedicated to the dreams of a teenager being able to drive, let alone with their own car, commanded $22.4M in box office sales with an $8M budget
and
That equates to over $58M in today’s dollars which would dwarf most movies at the box office these days.
I haven’t known a single teenager in my lifetime that didn’t want to get into a car and drive, even just down to Battery Park or up to the Cloisters. Over the last 70 years, it has been the first real taste of freedom many teenagers experience. Seeing this significant shift is disturbing in so many ways.
My point is simple, the vilification of cars in this city has all but eliminated a beloved rite of passage that generations earned and enjoyed. I remember my very first solo drive in the city; from Central Park West and 90th Street to Battery Park City, looped around lower Manhattan to the FDR drive to the Harlem River Drive, cutting across Dyckman Street to the West Side Highway, exiting at 96th street to head back to Central Park West. I looped the island with the windows open, music blasting and loving every single second of it. I cannot imagine a teenager doing that today.
The Final Word: Our so-called elected officials are doing everything they can to ruin this city, all for political gain. Thankfully, the pendulum swings both ways.
