SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
THE SUMMER OF ADOPTION
It’s that flavorful time of year when we all host or attend endless backyard BBQs, house parties and family outings. It is also that time of year that we, as pet parents, need to be extra vigilant in watching after our furrever ones. From increases in the tick population to heatwaves, manufacturer food recalls and more, pet parents will be busy this summer watching to make sure their furrever one doesn’t fall into harm’s way, while still keeping up the fun. We have a few stories in our next issue that tackle this very topic.
And, as kitten and puppy season is here, I have received alerts from shelters and rescues across the tri-state. Why? Because their facilities are already overrun by homeless pets, surrenders and more. Adding the endless stream of kittens and puppies from this season is tantamount to disaster, especially for the smaller rescues and independent shelters that rely solely on donations and volunteers. That includes even municipal shelters like our own Animal Care Centers of NYC (NYCACC.ORG). All of their facilities are at capacity right now which means the euthanization rate is on the rise again. Please, whatever you can do to help, whether it be volunteering, donating, adopting, or fostering, please contact your local shelter or rescue to see how you can help make a difference today!
Speaking of disaster, if the last week has taught us anything it’s that Mother Nature is unpredictable. This summer, according to NOAA, the National Weather Service, and the Farmer’s Almanac, is poised to be the hottest on record. Thankfully, our Official Dog Training Partner, Kate Perry of Kate Perry Dog Training & Daycare Center, has given us tips and tricks to help your furrever one tackle the heat and humidity.

MOREY’S PIERS
SOAKING UP SALTY BREEZES & SUNNY VIBES
By Patricia Canole
You can’t go wrong with the Jersey Shore if you’re looking for a classic summer getaway. This iconic stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean in New Jersey has been luring families, couples, and adventurers for generations with its sandy beaches, fun-filled boardwalks, and endless opportunities for fun in the sun! One stunning area is Wildwood. You’ll find miles of sandy coastline perfect for spreading your towel and soaking up some rays. And while the beaches are the main draw, the lively boardwalks add to a Jersey Shore’s endless amusements and entertainment.
One such place is Morey’s Piers, where you will find coastal splendor and fun and exciting attractions to please all ages. Nestled along the bustling boardwalk of Wildwood, New Jersey, Morey’s Piers has been a beloved seaside destination for generations of vacationers. With its towering rides, classic games, and mouthwatering food stands, this iconic amusement pier has captivated visitors with its timeless charm and endless excitement.
A BRIEF HISTORY
Morey’s Piers began modestly with Surfside Pier, which opened in 1969. The Morey brothers, driven by a vision of creating a family-friendly entertainment hub, started with simple attractions like a giant slide and a haunted house. Over the decades, however, their vision expanded dramatically. Mariner’s Landing Pier followed in 1976, and Adventure Pier was added in 1983. Each pier brought new thrills and experiences, helping to cement Morey’s Piers’ reputation as a premier destination.
. The expansion of Morey’s Piers mirrored broader changes in American culture. With their expansive beaches and burgeoning boardwalk attractions, the Wildwoods became a magnet for vacationers. Morey’s Piers capitalized on this trend, offering an accessible and varied entertainment experience that catered to all ages.
THE PIERS: RIDES & ATTRACTIONS
Morey’s Piers boasts an impressive array of over 100 rides and attractions, ensuring something for everyone. The Adventure, Surfside, and Mariner’s Amusement Piers offer rides like the iconic Giant Wheel, which provides memorable ocean views. This 156-foot Ferris Wheel, a symbol of Morey’s Pier, offers a serene counterpoint to the park’s adrenaline-pumping attractions.
· For thrill-seekers, head to the Surfside Amusement Pier for several heart-pounding rides. The Great Nor’easter, a suspended looping coaster, challenges riders with its high-speed twists and turns. Want more fun? Then head to the Doo Wopper for a wild ride through zigzag turns and undulating hills on this version of a classic wild mouse coaster.
· Over at Adventure Amusement Pie, prepare your engines for some thrills at Grand Prix Raceway. Are you ready to fly? Daring guests love the Skycoaster, which simulates the sensation of hang gliding. And don’t miss the Screamin’ Swing, a giant swing that propels riders high above the boardwalk.
· At Mariner’s Amusement Pier, make it a point to ride the Sea Serpent, the first boomerang coaster on the East Coast. It continues to thrill with its forward and backward loops.
Two world-class water parks, Raging Waters and Ocean Oasis Water Park, complement the amusement piers. These water parks provide a refreshing escape from the summer heat, with attractions designed to appeal to both thrill-seekers and those looking for relaxation.
Raging Waters, located on Mariner’s Pier, is known for having attractions the whole family can enjoy. The Sky Pond Journey, a unique water ride, takes guests on a winding river journey that culminates in a splashdown. Shotgun Falls offers a thrilling drop into a large catch pool, and the Speed Slides twist and turn while riders go head first on a mat, are favorites for those seeking high-speed excitement. Shipwreck Shoals and Kamp Kidtastrophe are interactive play areas which provide a safe and entertaining environment for younger guests.
Ocean Oasis Water Park, situated on Surfside Pier, offers a more tranquil setting with a tropical theme. Guests can relax in private cabanas or float along the Lazy River. While relaxation options abound, the Cliff Dive, a steep and exhilarating slide, is a standout attraction for those seeking a thrill.
Ocean Oasis also features a swim-up bar and a variety of dining options, making it a perfect spot for adults to unwind.
MORE ENTERTAINMENT
Don’t miss the Starlux Mini Golf, which boasts three minicourses—The Beach, The Ocean, and The Boardwalk— complete with artificial sand dunes, water fountains, and creatures of the sea. Whether you’re a seasoned mini-golfer or a first-time player, the combination of challenging courses, beautiful scenery, and the lively boardwalk atmosphere ensures a memorable experience for everyone.
Morey’s Piers is also a hub for events. The Piers host various events including classic car shows, beach sports tournaments, and various celebrations. These events draw crowds from near and far, adding to the lively atmosphere of the Wildwoods.
Live entertainment is also a staple at Morey’s Piers. During the summer, the piers come alive with musical performances by local artists as well as a Summer Concert Series at PigDog Beach BarBQ. These acts provide a festive backdrop to the rides and attractions, enhancing the overall guest experience.
Whether you’re a lifelong visitor or a first-time explorer, Morey’s Piers is a destination that captures the essence of seaside fun and creates lasting memories. As you stroll along the iconic boardwalk, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of this beloved amusement pier, you’ll understand why it has become a cherished part of Wildwood’s rich history and a must-visit attraction for all generations.
WHERE TO STAY
When visiting Morey’s Piers, you’ll find plenty of accommodation near the boardwalk and beaches. Pan American, Port Royal, Blue Palms Resort and Starlux Boutique offer comfortable stays and are within walking distance of the piers and beaches.
PAN AMERICAN HOTEL
There are plenty of B&Bs and resorts but staying at Pan American is par excellence. Now celebrating 60 years of service in hospitality, it has continued that excellent service since the day it opened. A good reason families return to this sunny gem year after year is that it’s that intoxicating.
Since Pan American is nestled on the beach, those who want to soak up the rays have several options. Head to the beach for the day or relax in a chaise lounge by the swimming pool (there’s a connecting kiddie pool). Also, an elevated sun deck overlooks the pool and offers even more fantastic beach views and sparkling ocean waters.
Dining options are also superb. Now under new management, Pan American’s on-site restaurant Cavu BYOB offers guests a tantalizing menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. New owner Matt Smith, and Chef Peter Karapanagiotis have curated a familiar dish from the past two decades. A musttry is the Whisky Mikes Burger—simply superb!
PORT ROYAL
A stay The Port Royal Hotel, situated on the beach, offers guest rooms and suites catering to families looking to spend an enjoyable vacation at the Jersey Shore. All rooms feature flat screen TV’s, refrigerators and complimentary Wi-Fi. Guests also enjoy the outdoor pool, kiddie pool, patio, snack store, game room, and the popular Royal Grille Restaurant.
STARLUX BOUTIQUE
The décor is what most of us picture as iconic mid-century modern: clocks have starbursts, chairs are made of molded plywood, colors favor shades of orange and teal and, yes, there are lava lamps in the rooms. Steps away from Wildwoods famous beach and boardwalk, the hotel even has its own minigolf course and onsite ice cream parlor.
BLUE PALMS RESORT
Blue Palms Resort is the closest to the rides, slides, thrills, and spills of all the Morey’s Piers properties. Its vibe is classic Doo-Wop style. Plastic blue palm trees surround the pool, and retro-style furniture is in the lobby and guest rooms. Barbecue grills, a fire pit, complimentary bicycles and beach chairs allow families to spend most of their time outside soaking up the sun.
A stay at Morey’s Blue Palms Resort is made even more special with it’s Funclusive offering. Guests who book directly with the resort via phone or website, gain unlimited access to the Piers and Waterparks for the length of their stay!
PLENTY TO EAT
Whether it’s Stubborn Bros. for the homemade Crab Cake sandwich and a Buffalo Chicken wrap or Pigdog Beach BarBQ to relax and indulge in some great burgers, barbecue, or Joe’s Fish Co. for burgers, sandwiches, salads and the best seafood on the Jersey Shore, you’ll find satisfying options throughout the amusement park. Take a closer look at even more excellent choices.
THE FOUNDERS GRUB & PUB
This favorite is a tribute to all the inventors, designers, and trailblazers who helped the seaside culture evolve into what it is today. Famous notables are featured on the pub’s walls, displaying their stories and inventions. The Founders Grub & Pub menu includes a mix of boardwalk classics and inventive dishes, including their famous jumbo pizza, seafood, sandwiches, and salads. They also have a full-service outdoor dining area where you can enjoy waterfront views while dining on their wide selection of American cuisine
JERSEY GIRL KITCHEN & BAR
Adjacent to the Blue Palms Resort, the recently renovated Jersey Girl Kitchen & Bar is brimming with classic Jersey eats and drinks. It’s a must-visit for those craving an authentic taste of the Garden State. Their famous Jersey breakfast includes a variety or Jersey Classics with a twist and features a Mimosa Tree for those looking to spice up their morning. Don’t miss out on their nightly specials and daily Happy Hour (their Thursday Night Smash Burger is a MUST when in Wildwood!)
GOLF ADVENTURES: THE BIG LITTLE 9
Morey’s Big Little 9 Golf Course, a hidden gem, offers a one-of-akind golfing experience for players of all levels. This compact ninehole course, a creation of renowned architect Fred Langford, is living proof that greatness can be found in small packages.
As the name suggests, Morey’s Big Little 9 is a compact course that packs a punch. Despite its modest size, the layout is meticulously crafted, with each hole presenting its challenges and distinct character. The course winds through a picturesque landscape featuring well-manicured fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and undulating greens that demand precision and course management. Conquering these challenges will leave you wanting to return.

JUDE ELIE
THE RISING STAR IN GLOBAL POLITICS
By Patricia Canole | Photography by Neil J Tandy
In the tumultuous world of Haitian politics, one name has been making waves and capturing the nation’s attention: Jude Elie. This charismatic and driven leader has emerged as a beacon of hope for many Haitians, promising to usher in a new era of progress, transparency and accountability.
Born in the South of Haiti in Les Cayes, Jude Elie’s journey to political prominence was anything but ordinary. Raised in a family that valued education and community service, he excelled academically from an early age. After completing his primary and secondary education, Elie went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He then completed his master’s in civil engineering with a concentration in Urban Development. He continued his studies and obtained a post-master’s certificate in Executive Business Administration. He also holds a Ph.D. in Political Science.
During his university years, Elie became actively involved in student organizations advocating for educational reforms and better student body representation. His passion for social justice, safe housing, and equity and his ability to articulate complex issues earned him a dedicated following among his peers.
ENTRY INTO POLITICS
Elie’s political transition was a natural progression fueled by his desire to bring about meaningful changes in Haiti. During this period, Elie witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the Haitian people, from widespread poverty and lack of access to essential services to the rampant corruption and political instability.
Elie’s involvement in several national and international sessions lead to his tireless efforts to address Haiti’s pressing issues. His transparency, accountability, and economic development plans strike a chord with people worldwide as he presents the Haitian population’s weariness of broken promises and stagnation.
RISE TO PROMINENCE
Elie’s message of hope, integrity and innovative policy proposals elicit aspiration in the Haitian people. While he is working diligently to earn his place in the presidential seat, his imposing personality has already ignited a national conversation about the need for a new generation of leaders committed to transformative change.
We met Jude Elie recently, and he shared his views on life, politics and the state of the world.
What are your top policy priorities when elected?
Security will be my number one priority. Restoring confidence and law and order is essential for local and foreign investment to exit safely. When considering the current situation in Haiti, the entire nation should rightfully be seen as a top priority. However, it may not be practical to prioritize every aspect simultaneously. When elected, I will focus on addressing the most urgent needs through specific policies. They include Security, Economy, Education, Healthcare. I will make Haiti an agricultural heaven by bringing modern technology and capitalizing on Haitian and International investors’ knowledge and financial contribution.
How will you address critical issues, including the Economy, Healthcare, and Education?
Haiti faces significant economic challenges. I plan to protect the weak and have the strong contribute without asphyxiating them. As soon as I take office, my strategy will involve collaborating with the central bank and the private sector to explore methods to facilitate small businesses’ access to loans. I will also support business development services that can help create jobs and generate economic activity.
As we strive for safety and better living situations for the Haitian population, the international community will be encouraged to provide continued assistance to Haiti. Many Haitians look forward to returning to their country of origin. The professional and technical knowledge they will bring back will lead to better education and, thus, better financial independence and self-reliance for the Haitian population.
My administration will prioritize a thorough review of how funds from the Fond Nationale Education are allocated to education. This would involve improving teacher training programs, upgrading school infrastructure, and actively involving local communities in decision-making processes related to education.
What is your long-term vision for the country?
My vision is quite simple: Restore pride and dignity to our people! Provide them with the fundamental rights of security, education, healthcare, and employment. And the right to vote! I envision every Haitian will have equal opportunities for success, irrespective of their social status.
What do you hope to accomplish in your first term?
I aim to revitalize the state institutions and strengthen the Haitian economy. Any government following mine will feel obliged to invest in Haiti’s development; this is why I have my secret plan that I dare to hold dear to me at this point and that I will make public in time. From now on, the Haitian people will have the leaders they deserve.
What motivates you and keeps you going, even in challenging times?
God is my foundation; He has never let me down. My people are my inspiration. I will never let them down. When considering Haiti’s socio-political and economic situation and the challenges faced by its people, the country requires a leader who embraces Haitians’ values and comprehends their hardships. Haiti calls for leaders capable of instigating a burst of pride. It needs leaders who break the chains of despair and turn the people’s creativity and energy into improving the well-being of this nation’s daughters and sons. We need leaders who restore hope.
Given our society’s discomfort, I believe nothing should be more urgent than helping the Haitian people understand that the future of our country is up to them. I want to catalyze the removal of the prevalent feeling of powerlessness and replace it with one of optimism. I will offer comfort, not with vain words, platitudes, and generalities, but with global, enlightened, solid, and resolute policies. I will hold myself and my administration accountable for their fate.

ACURA INTEGRA TYPE S
SURPRISING POWER PACKED INTO A GORGEOUS SHELL
By Jenny Peters
Take one look at the 2024 Acura Integra Type S in the eye-popping Blue Pearl hue and you’ll probably fall in love, especially if a sports coupe is your idea of a fun car to zip around town in. For the color is swooningly beautiful, as are the clean lines and streamlined shape. But before you get too excited about this award-winning vehicle ranked Number One as the best subcompact luxury car of 2024 by Car and Driver magazine, there’s an important thing to know.
This zippy turbocharged 2.0 liter, four-cylinder sports car has only one way to get it going, and that’s with a manual transmission. So, if driving a stick—pushing in the clutch with your left foot and shifting gears—isn’t something you’ve learned to do, this one’s not for you. (Unless you’re ready to learn, of course.)
That said, there’s a lot of fun to be had behind the wheel of this new highperformance, six-speed Integra Type S model, for there’s power to spare in its 320hp engine. More than enough, too, to give off a growl as you sit at a stop light and plenty of get-up-and-go to perhaps draw the attention of law enforcement who just might want a closer look as you whizz past.
What they’ll see is a roomy interior, but not a lot of trunk space. The Integra Type S has four doors and ostensibly seats four, but those four people are not members of my tall family. Assume only two to three adults can ride comfortably and two children can ride comfortably in the backseat: face it, this is not a family coupe but a fun sports car that’s really made for two, despite having the second row of seats. Two pieces of luggage fit comfortably in the trunk, but four would not.
ZIPPY ON STREETS & HIGHWAYS
The Integra Type S is designed to move, making city driving a breeze, even when the streets are packed. Its size makes it quick, enabling you to slide in and out of traffic jams like a darting hawk, and fast at taking advantage of gaps in the gridlock. It’s almost fun to drive on crowded streets in this Acura.
And it really is a blast to get it out on the highway when traffic is moving. Pop it into Sport+ drive mode and it’s a road-hugging animal, up to the challenge of high-speed driving. You can even make it sound like a true beast by activating its Active Exhaust Valve, which literally turns it into a vroom-vroom car that sounds like it just drove off a racetrack.
To really get the full enjoyment of driving this sportster, head up to your favorite mountain range or just hit the Taconic Parkway, for zooming around curves in this low-lying automobile is a gas. We particularly like it on curvy country roads, where it stays tight in the curves and easily passes slower vehicles on the straightaways. Turn off that noisy Active Exhaust while touring up in the hills, as there’s no need to antagonize the residents!
THE BEST FEATURES
Regardless of which kind of driving you do in the Acura Integra Type S, it’s designed to keep you safe, with some standard driver-assistance features included. The Collision Mitigation Braking System alerts and even applies the brakes to avoid front impact; Road Departure Mitigation alerts to driving out of a lane or off a roadway; and Pedestrian Detection (a very useful one in NYC) sends audio and visual warnings and even applies the brakes if a pedestrian steps in front of the car.
This peppy ride gets a 21-mpg city gas rating, with 28 mpg averaged on the highway and 24 mpg combined, so its main appeal isn’t that of a hybrid or electric vehicle which gets much better gas mileage. But when the exhaust growls and the Integra Type S jumps to do whatever you ask of it on the road, those of us that love driving a speedy little sport car are not so concerned about that gas mileage. For this is a car that’s a ton of fun to drive.

HEMLOCK NEVERSINK
GETTING CLOSE TO NATURE IN THE CATSKILLS
By Jeff & Stephanie Sylva
Wellness—the holistic integration of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being, fueling the body, engaging the mind, and nurturing the spirit. It sounds terrific, but it’s not always easy to attain. However, you could consider visiting the restoration-focused retreat Hemlock Neversink, just two hours from Manhattan in Neversink, NY.
Having opened in the Fall of 2023, Hemlock Neversink is the newest edition to the Foster Supply Hospitality Catskill-based group behind several award-winning hotels and restaurants. The 34-room wellness destination sits on 230 acres. The Catskills, specifically the Neversink region, has long been a destination for rejuvenation and escape, with various lodgings catering to those searching for health and relaxation. Hemlock Neversink’s main building was constructed in the 1800’s. The rest of the property’s buildings took shape with each new owner over the years.
THE SUITE LIFE
A variety of accommodations offers guests a wealth of options. The solo traveler can enjoy a queen bed with an oversized bathroom. At the same time, a couple who meditate together and seek restoration may find a king suite with a private treatment room and both a sunrise and sunset deck overlooking the Catskill woods to their liking. Many rooms have a private patio or deck; some even offer private outdoor showers.
Interiors feature soothing earth tones and a Quaker-inspired design that perfectly melds the historic simplicity of natural wood and iron with modern fixtures and amenities like Belino Fine Linens, Matouk Turkish waffle fabric robes and towels, and Oneka bath amenities.
ON THE MENU
As an all-inclusive resort, Hemlock Neversink offers an outstanding culinary program where all meals and snacks are included. The Fosters—named 2023 James Beard Foundation’s Restaurant and Chef Awards Semi-Finalists— aim to continue this level of excellence with Bittersweet at Hemlock, a full-service restaurant with a plant-based seasonal menu. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the main building’s spacious, wood-paneled dining room or, weather permitting, on the large outside dining deck.
Menus are kept simple so that you can manage the choices. Breakfast combines a Continental spread of fruit, yogurt, granola, pastries, smoked salmon, fresh juices, and a small selection of kitchen-prepared egg plates or avocado toast. Lunch also offers a limited selection yet will impress your taste buds. The Smoked Trout with Lettuce and Tomato on Sourdough, Charred Greens with Burrata, and the Portobello Mushroom Burger were all exquisite.
The dinner menu rotates daily and offers wonderful protein—and plant-based choices. One night, salmon with Grilled Asparagus was a delight, and the next night, duck Ragu with Pappardelle displayed Chef Charlie’s expertise. Several guided hikes, forest bathing walks, and stargazing sessions encourage connecting with the natural surroundings. More than five miles of wellmaintained trails traverse the property. ATLANTIS THE ROYAL
A JEWEL IN DUBAI’S GOLDEN CROWN
Article & Photography by Neil J Tandy
Just the mere mention of Dubai conjures up images of untold luxury, and the latest addition to Kerzner International’s Atlantis Resorts, Atlantis The Royal, most certainly doesn’t disappoint! I recently had the pleasure of spending four nights at the resort, which oozes opulence and I cannot recommend it enough.
A very comfortable flight from JFK to Dubai International Airport on Emirates Airline was the beginning of a few days of being treated like a king. Once passport control and customs were cleared at the massive airport, I proceeded to the Atlantis welcome desk and then to the shuttle, for an airconditioned, smooth 40-minute drive through Dubai, to the resort’s location on Crescent Drive, Palm Jumeirah.
A FANTASYLAND
Entering the Atlantis The Royal is a treat in itself! The first thing one sees is the ALIGHT feature, which amazed me with its two massive skins of glass clad in water and holding choreographed plumes of fire between them. The lobby is huge, with so much to look at, from the almost 40 feet tall “Droplets” sculpture, representing the first drops of rain in the dry desert, to the hundreds of raindrop-shaped light pendants and the wall aquariums housing some 7200 marine creatures. The eye wanders across the vast Royal Tearoom, to the outside views of Elements Terrace restaurant and beyond, across Skyblaze Fountain, on to Milos Restaurant and a peek at The Palm and Dubai City in the background.
Turning back to the reception area, the richness of gold and marble invites you to check in with one of the incredibly friendly staff. I was booked into a King Palmscape room with stunning views of The Palm from the 20th floor, both inside the room and out on the glass-sided balcony. Walking onto the balcony for the first time, I became aware of the heat and humidity, with a nighttime temperature approaching 100F; thank goodness for the ample supply of complimentary water and a top-class air conditioner. Falling asleep in the soft, beautifully comfortable bed and watching the twinkling lights of Palm Island was heavenly.
A NEW DAY DAWNS
A long soak under the glorious rain shower the following morning set the tone for a wonderful day of being spoiled beyond belief, starting with breakfast at Gastronomy, a genuinely remarkable buffet-style restaurant inspired by food markets, with live cooking stations and an array of food choices to satisfy every taste—fruits, yogurts, eggs, farm fresh vegetables, Asian foods, pizza, pastries to delight, plant-based choices, a myriad of juices, sushi, breads to die for, even candies. You name it, it’s almost certainly on the breakfast menus at Gastronomy, which can be enjoyed inside with stunning views of The Palm, or on the terrace with the same wonderful views.
After breakfast, living it large continued with a couple of relaxing hours at Cloud 22, its breathtaking views of the Palm to the one side and the Arabian Gulf to the other. A 300 feet long infinity pool, a gorgeous plunge pool, blue and white Dolce and Gabbana sun loungers, floating beds in the infinity pool, cabanas, an incredible bar and a D&G menu, all make Cloud 22, partnered with Dolce and Gabbana x Ounass, one of the most sought after and exclusive locations in Dubai, where one can easily mix with celebrities and very high-end A-listers.
A couple of perfectly cooked wagyu sliders and plenty of top-line sparkling water filled a small hole in my stomach and kept me hydrated in 95F heat, sunshine, and impossibly blue skies. Of course, plenty of shade under the very large sun lounger umbrellas kept the brutal Arabian sun at bay, along with liberal use of sunscreen.
SOOTHE THE SOUL
All too soon, it was time to depart and take the elevator back to the ground floor, then onto AWAKEN Spa, a genuinely enormous health and wellness center that aligns with each guest’s unique quest for mindfulness, health, and happiness. It awakens the elements of nature: body (earth), mind (fire), emotion (water), and spirit (air).
There is a never-ending array of treatments and experiences, including a Halotherapy Salt Cave, a Hydrotherapy pool, a Charcoal Sauna, and many more—many of which I had never heard of!
I opted for a one-hour AWAKEN massage, which combined aromatherapy and Swedish massage styles with Reiki energy healing. Therapist Kudzai from Zimbabwe beautifully administered the massage. She did such a great job of relaxing me that I fell asleep!
After a quick shower and change of clothes into something smart casual, it was off to estiatorio Milos for dinner on the restaurant’s terrace, overlooking the Skyblaze Fountain, one of the world’s unique performance fountains. Skyblaze provides an intimate viewing experience unlike any other. Where a normal fountain is typified by a classical water formation arranged in rings and arcs, Skyblaze is designed as a field, with water and fire expressions creating surprising movements as they appear and multiply from anywhere within the field. This arrangement makes choreographies, gestures and patterns impossible on a classically configured fountain.
Dinner was superb—as it was now evident that everything is at Atlantis The Royal. I started with the Milos Special: lightly fried paper-thin zucchini and eggplant arranged in a mountain around copious amounts of Saganaki cheese and Tzatziki. I then followed with a wonderfully cooked filet mignon, eaten at leisure while watching those beautiful fountains and listening to the wonderful music. After dinner, I walked around the fountains and the Elements Terrace to take some night photos and then I retuened to my wonderfully cool and calming room before falling asleep once again.
NEW ADVENTURES
Waking up to views of the Palm Jumeirah skyline was not getting old. The ever-changing quality and direction of light made it feel like a new destination every time I looked out through the enormous sliding glass doors across the balcony of my room, and each day at Atlantis The Royal brought new sights and adventures.
Breakfast at the Royal Club Lounge is a wonderful experience. You have a choice of a full Continental or English Breakfast buffet. The bacon and sausages were veal, in keeping with the laws regarding pork consumption, but both were equally delicious. There is also a selection of omelets and some excellent breakfast choices, especially the pastries and muffins.
The Afternoon Tea at the Royal Club Lounge is also fabulous— excellent English-style sandwiches, quiches, scones with clotted cream, pastries and a great selection of teas. It’s civilized, quaint, and oh-so genteel—right there in Dubai!
Atlantis The Royal has ninety pools and I also got to relax in a lounger at Nobu by the Beach, the debut pool and beach club by the iconic Japanese restaurant. With seductive deep house music played in the background by a live DJ, it was the perfect place to relax and tan. A few yards away, the beach beckoned—Atlantis The Royal has one mile of private beach overlooking the Palm Skyline, with beautiful, warm sea water enticing one to swim.
WORLD-CLASS DINING
Fine dining is a given at Atlantis The Royal, and of the 17 world-class restaurants, 8 are headed by celebrity chefs, including Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal, Ariana Bundy, Costas Spiliadis, and Mich Turner. I was fortunate to have dined at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Milos and Ariana’s Persian Kitchen. Each restaurant offered a wonderful menu, including delicious signature dishes.
The Meat Fruit at Blumenthal was tremendously special. It’s a velvety, incredibly tasty chicken pate disguised as a mandarin and served with a wonderful, toasted sourdough. This dish is a multi-day recipe requiring three cooks on the cold larder to work five hours daily. The chicken and asparagus with a delightful pea puree were incredible, and the signature, freshly made Tipsy Cake (I opted for the non-alcohol version) was heavenly.
At Ariana’s Persian Kitchen, the whole experience of exotic Iranian and Lebanese culinary delights was sensory overload for my taste buds! From the traditional welcome with Iranian blue salt and walnuts, to sambuseh–the Iranian samosa, kabab koobideh with the most incredible saffron rice and almond slivers coated in 24 karat gold dust and a pomegranate and rosewater mocktail to wash it all down.
Everyone loves cake and a trip to Mich Turner’s, The Little Venice Cake Company, for cake and tea, was another hour beautifully spent—just tasting those muffins, cupcakes and nougat was enough to make me envious of those who regularly have special cakes designed and created by the wonderful ladies that work there. My hosts, Penelope, an incredible cake artist, and Lucy, made sure that the tea and cakes were mind-blowingly tasty and provided me with some wonderful background to the wonderful company and store, including its connection to British Royalty through Mich.
Although I didn’t dine at the incredible Ling Ling, a unique ultra lounge experience by the Tao Group, a nighttime visit, with high-energy music provided by the live DJ, reminded me oh so much of the nightclubs of my youth, but with much more luxury and panoramic views of Dubai’s glittering skyline from its two levels on the 22nd and 23rd floors.
MORE ADVENTURES
No visit to Atlantis is complete without a visit to Lost Chambers Aquarium at the sister resort, Atlantis The Palm, a 10-minute shuttle ride away. The main feature is the Ambassador Aquarium, an incredible 3 million gallons containing over 65,000 marine creatures and another 21 exhibits to explore.
A massive highlight for me was participating in the AquaTrek extreme, walking through the Ambassador lagoon thirty feet underwater, coming face to face with fish, rays, and sharks, and getting some priceless underwater photos and videos. This experience starts with a ten-minute instruction session, including a rundown of hand signals used underwater and a full list of safety precautions.
After donning the provided wetsuit and oh-so-stylish yellow Crocs, I climbed down a couple of steps into the water; the heavy helmet, reminiscent of the old school diving helmets, was placed on my shoulders and the oxygen tank was put on the back and connected. The pressure was set and it was time to descend the ladders, accompanied by diver Danny, into the lagoon, stopping at every step to clear the ears and give Danny the OK sign. All too soon, it was time to climb the ladders back to the surface, but what an experience, especially for someone who isn’t a strong swimmer.
My last night was reserved for a truly memorable ten-minute flight on the tethered, helium-filled Dubai Balloon with incredible views of Palm Jumeirah from around 500 feet up. I was lucky enough to get the balloon to myself and a pilot who was very happy to let me walk around the enclosed circular basket, taking as many photos as I wanted. The humidity on the ground, which permanently fogged my lenses, gave way to a deliciously cooling breeze and clear lenses!
Atlantis Resorts is a division of the South African Company Kerzner International, and that connection is reflected in the multicultural and multi-national staff, who are efficient, friendly, professional, and very attentive. Walking past almost every staff member during my stay, they would greet me with the Arab gesture of placing the right palm on the heart. Attention to detail throughout the resort is mind-blowing; no detail is too small to ignore.
I left Atlantis The Royal, sadly, wishing that I had been able to spend more time there and experience more of this incredible resort, including visiting the beautiful art galleries and high-end stores, but vowing to return to this Jewel in Dubai’s Golden Crown.

BARCELONA
MAJESTIC IN SO MANY WAYS
By Jenny Peters
There’s just something about Barcelona. Visit once and the next thing you know, dreams of returning will begin filling your head, especially if a love of architecture sparks your travel urge to see novel places. While Barcelona is known for many things, like fabulous Mediterranean weather, an incredible culinary scene, and that world-class soccer team known affectionately as Barça, that city’s architecture makes it one of the world’s most majestic cities. Anchored by the incomparable works of Catalan architect (and visionary) Antoni Gaudi and steeped in the centuries-long history that began here in pre-Roman times, Barcelona is spectacular at every turn.
For the ultimate place to call home in Barcelona, there’s nothing quite like the Majestic Hotel & Spa. Constructed in 1918, the sizeable neoclassical hotel dominates the corner of Calle de Valencia and Paseo de Gracia, just steps from Casa Batilló and Casa Milá (La Pedrera), two of Gaudi’s most memorable architectural achievements.
Elegant in every way, the award-winning five-star Majestic is one of the world’s great hotels. Its expansive rooms and suites—all furnished in a modern style—provide striking views of the famous Paseo, its luxury shops, and those classic Gaudi buildings.
Thoroughly modern inside its classic façade, the hotel is an oasis of calm on a hot Barcelona summer day. Spend hours in the beautiful spa or take in the evening air from La Dolce Vitae, the hotel’s convivial rooftop bar with stunning city views. Grab a glass of Alberino and a few tapas there, or hang out in El Bar del Majestic, where live music and expertly crafted cocktails get the nighttime party started.
Be sure to notice the Majestic’s notable art collection, which includes works from avant-garde Spanish artists and international creators, before you head out into the city that wears its artistic personality on every block.
A DAY WITH GAUDI
There’s no one quite like Gaudi, an architect whose vision combines fanciful art within every structure, so plan to spend at least a full day in Barcelona immersed in his visionary worlds. Begin outside the Majestic with those two famous homes and know that booking timed reservations is essential for Casa Batilló and Casa Milá. Allow at least an hour at each to marvel at his wonderful modernist designs. Both homes were constructed around 1906, breaking the previous architectural ideas wide open.
By the time those eye-popping buildings were completed in the early 1900s, Gaudi had already been working on Barcelona’s astonishing La Sagrada Familia Basilica for over 20 years—and that strikingly modern Catholic church remains under construction today. It’s a place that must be seen to be believed, from the intensely modern western façade that follows the story of Jesus with striking Brutalist sculptures by Josep Maria Subirachs to the soaring interior and nave that make it like no other place on earth.
You’ll need timed tickets to see this gem, so buy well in advance and be sure to purchase the ticket to go up into the towers, as it is an incredible experience. You’ll take the elevator high up to the top of the basilica, gasp at the city views, and see more of the soaring structure up close. Know that you’ll have to walk the steps down (this is not for those who are disabled), wending your way through the actual tower and seeing more gorgeous views looking down inside the church, finally ending up back to the nave. It’s unforgettable.
Next, jump on Barcelona’s Hop On Hop Off Blue Route bus found right outside the cathedral, which will take you up the city’s hillside to Gaudi’s amazing Park Güell, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just like La Sagrada, Casa Batilló, and Casa Milá are. Old or young, visitors are transfixed by the vast salamander and main terrace, adorned with whimsical mosaic designs. Buy your timed ticket here ahead of time, too.
Return to the Majestic Hotel via the Turistic bus, which wends past the Barcelona FC soccer stadium and to the Eixample district, where other modernist architects helped create lovely streets with uniquely beautiful buildings. See distinctive terraces, stained glass features, embellished roofs, and more.
EVEN MORE DESIGNS
Antoni Gaudi and his fellow Modernists changed Barcelona’s landscape, building on the city’s long structural history. To get a glimpse of what it was like long before those architects caused some seismic change, take in the Gothic Quarter and Ciutat Vella (Old Town) to discover the genuinely ancient parts of the city. Meander down narrow cobblestone streets, find the Roman ruins tucked inside a building and discover the Gothic cathedral, whose iterations on this spot date back to 599 AD.
Steeped in history yet modern and vibrant, Barcelona truly is an architecture lover’s dream city. Add in the incredible food experiences found on every block with the friendly locals who are happy to advise on getting the most from their beloved city, and this Spanish gem will surely grab your heart and squeeze. Time to start dreaming of your next visit!

LAS VEGAS
TRAVELS WITH A NEW YORK SENSIBILITY
Article and Photos By Meryl Pearlstein
If you’ve been to Las Vegas and covered the requisite activities like walking the Strip, ogling the Bellagio fountains and trying your hand at slots, it’s time to take another look, this time in New York style. Here are some of the ways you can stay on a Big Apple track.
STAY
As a city person, you’ll want the shiniest and brightest resort in Las Vegas. Fontainebleau Las Vegas opened in December to well-deserved fanfare. With 36 dining options, multiple pool areas, art-adorned spaces, and stunning rooms and suites, it rivals the best properties in NYC. Accommodations are all about taste and finish with serene color schemes of tan, white and blue; marble bathrooms; Strip or mountain views; and lights and drapes controlled with a swipe of a finger. The Lapis spa and fitness center refines the of-the-moment wellness trend with multi-modality massages, expansive water features, and specialized trainers and classes.
The resort’s location at the less-developed north end of the Strip is a plus for New Yorkers accustomed to skirting crowds like those in Times Square. There’s no need to worry about being removed from the “touristy” action—Fontainebleau’s fleet of Escalades and Rolls-Royces can take you wherever you want to go.
EAT
New Yorkers boast about scoring reservations at Michelin-starred restaurants, and Fontainebleau Las Vegas doesn’t disappoint. Chyna Club from restaurateur Alan Yau of Hakkasan fame features Chinese favorites like Peking Duck and Scallop Shumai. Also from Yau, Washing Potato is a dramatic, open-kitchen stage for such dishes as Scallop Shumai, Fried Mochi with Sweet Lotus Seed Paste, and Venison Puffs. Don’s Prime is a sophisticated steakhouse with Wagyu A5, oysters, and caviar taking center stage.
More Fine Dining Other restaurants keep Vegas’s dining scene at New York City-worthy levels.
Newly opened Peter Luger Steak House offers superlative old-school dining. Expect Luger’s acclaimed “steak for two,” tomato and onions salad, and sizzling bacon along with an extraordinary wine list with fine vintages like Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon served by the glass as well. The friendly restaurant manages to make you feel like you’re still in the 1887 Williamsburg dining room despite its much larger size. Located at Caesar’s Palace
Of the same caliber, Joe’s is familiar to New Yorkers who have traveled to Miami Beach for a winter escape. Here, the menu’s stars are the stone crab claws, offered in sizes ranging from small to jumbo and served with Joe’s proprietary mustard sauce, and lump crab cakes perfected with no breadcrumbs in sight. Located in the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace
Wynn Las Vegas has debuted a limited-run celebritychef residency, Safta 1964 by Chef Alon Shaya led is by award-winning Chef Shaya and restaurateur Emily Shaya. Located within Jardin it serves Mediterraneaninspired cuisine. His Salatim Platter has all the Mediterranean hits you love like Tabbouleh and Labneth. Located at Wynn.
If your dining preference skews towards edgy Brooklyn, a visit to Las Vegas’s developing Arts District is warranted. One of Las Vegas’s hottest dining experiences, Esther’s Kitchen, sits in an area recalling Bushwick with its dynamic street art. Named for Chef James Trees’ great-aunt, Esther’s Kitchen focuses on breads, pastas, pizzas and seasonal Italian specialties made from the highest quality ingredients. Reservations are a must–you’ll feel right at home trying to secure a table here.

PLAY
Like New York, Las Vegas has no shortage of options to entertain you night and day.
You’ll return home with bragging rights after a visit to Sphere. Its presence on the skyline is unmistakable, like the spire of the Empire State Building. Exterior visuals change throughout the day, and inside a multitude of projections and speakers create an immersive, sound-surround experience unlike any other. If a concert isn’t scheduled during your visit, buy a ticket for the daily “Postcard from Earth” experience which journeys around the world with storytelling and imagery that soar over, around and under you.
For an elevated take on arena concerts and sports, Allegiant Stadium is the GOAT. Purchase a ticket that includes Club entry, and you’ll have your own dedicated area for cocktails and merch, with restrooms just for you.
Cirque du Soleil’s most recent production, Mad Apple, takes New York City nightlife as its inspiration and turns it on its creative head. Much more than aerial dynamite and circus acts, the very-adult show incorporates stylized acrobatics, off-color comedy, performance art, song and dance.

CRUISING PORTUGAL’S DOURO RIVER
SAVOR THE CULTURE, FOOD & WINES
By Melanie Carden
Of course, I swoon a bit when seeing sparkling wine at breakfast, but I also crave authentic experiences, quiet time, and a dash of adventure. The newest addition to Avalon Waterways’ fleet, the Alegria, offers all that and more as it meanders its way down Portugal’s Douro River. The suite-style ship echoes the layout the brand is known for—spacious rooms with their genius Open-Air Balcony design. With lounge areas that balance casual elegance and inherent coziness, the Alegria teeters on perfection as it ushers its guests through the verdant valley and endless vineyards, promising a thrilling adventure at every turn.
Usually, once I board a ship, I unpack and look for a comfortable corner in a lounge. What an absolute delight to slide open my suite’s full-wall, floorto-ceiling window wall, which transformed my space into a luxurious covered patio. These Panorama Suite window walls open to seven feet. So, whether I was lounging on my bed or nestled on my chair, sipping local wine, I was immersed in the valley’s fresh air—listening to the birds and occasional backyard rooster—as I floated past vineyards, swaths of forest, and dazzling waterfalls.
A self-proclaimed pillow critic, beds, bedding, and pillows are not just fluff but a critical component of any vacation experience. Offering a choice of pillow densities, plush mattress toppers, and even the option to change the bed’s location, I slept so well that I overslept. I declared this welcome luxurious moment, rolled open my window wall, and ordered room service.
LIFE ABOARD
Traveling with food allergies can be annoying at best, but whether you need to avoid certain foods or adore another— the staff delivers. Once I spoke with the staff and explained my dietary needs, each day was a parade of culinary spoils. The menus are fresh, organic, local, and bountiful. Guests might have Port Wine Marinated Melon, Halibut with Carrot-Cumin Foam and Sepia Noodles, or one of the rich pasta dishes—all paired with local wines or cocktails crafted with care. Wherever you are on the ship, the panoramic views make for a spectacular backdrop, including the dining room.
I visited during a rainy spell, yet it failed to dampen our fun. However, I’d be eager to go again and spend a few relaxing evenings on the Sky Deck under the stars. Luckily, we didn’t completely miss out on outdoor enjoyment; the covered Observation Lounge proved the perfect protection from the drizzle.
The indoor spaces are equally awash in majestic views and offer legitimately comfortable seating—a cruising bonus. I toggled between sipping lattes and cocktails and indulging in their BeWell water stations, featuring invigorating, vitamininfused waters. The smaller Club Lounge feels like a little secret—a snuggly speakeasy with freshly baked cookies--a happy place. I found myself relaxed enough to engage in artsy doodling—a much-needed mindfulness—and reading up on the many excursion choices.
VINEYARDS, VILLAGES & WONDERS
Each day, I toiled choosing between their Active, Discovery, or Classic itineraries since I’m equally interested in architecture, history, biking, and the area’s famed Port wine. Inspired by the endless family farms along the banks of the Douro River, visiting an old farm caught my eye. Different farms are visited yearly, and we were delighted to see an idyllic aristocratic country estate. We strolled the vineyard with the estate’s matron, a Contessa with the kind of life story deserving of its movie starring Meryl Streep. She shared the rich history of the land, and we sipped the Port she served directly from the barrel.
Throughout the cruise, you can expect delightful choices— leisurely biking with a biologist, the grand architecture of the Interpretation Centre of the Romanesque, the weatherworn beauty of the town of Régua and its exquisite tiles, and the birds of prey of Douro International Natural Park. If you need to replenish your dinner party chitchat reserves, do not miss the absurdly fascinating excursion to the cork museum, Planet Cork. Each excursion is led by knowledgeable guides who provide insightful commentary and ensure a memorable experience.
BEFORE YOU GO…
Alegria means happiness, and it’s the mission, mantra, and guiding notion that every staff member I met seemed to honor and celebrate. They created a laidback cruising culture for the ship’s 102 passengers; the cruise director was equal parts organization guru and cherished friend, ensuring that every guest’s needs and desires were met with utmost care and attention.
If you’re lucky enough to have sunny skies, your cheeks will be rosy from sipping Port and soaking up the sun. Then again, if you’re fortunate enough to have a bit of rain, you’ll get to watch the slowmotion steam rise from the vineyards as if Mother Nature lifted a veil, declaring a triumphant “ta-da.” In either scenario, you’ll experience the romance and beauty of Portugal’s Douro River and a ship that delivers on the promise of its name. We recently caught up with Amy Kalikow to find out more.
Can you tell our readers about your background and how you got started in interior design?
I have always had a passion for interior design and my background was always on the business side of a creative industry in advertising, PR, and invitation design. I would frequent shows and design my own apartments throughout my entire life. Organically, a friend had seen my personal home that I had designed and hired me to design her apartment and then her second home in The Hamptons after that. I had no idea what I was doing initially but I am very resourceful and always up for a challenge, and it was a natural transition for me.
How would you describe your design style?
Functional, timeless, unique.
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Design inspiration is everywhere. Living in NYC, I have access to so many great inspirational shows, venues and architecture. I attend shows around the world and love to see how people live in other countries. Vintage furniture and fashion markets are also a great source of inspiration for me as I love to re-imagine pieces from the past.
How do you approach collaborating with clients to understand their needs and preferences?
Design for me is all about collaboration. I like to walk clients’ homes with them and really understand what their needs are and how I can improve on them. In designing a home for a client, it is essential to understand what they are hoping for in their home, delivering the perfect balance of functionality and comfort.
What do you enjoy most about being an interior designer?
Seeing a project come to life and our clients truly enjoying their homes is the best part of being an interior designer.
How do you stay current with trends and changes in the interior design industry?
I read a lot of magazines and travel to different countries such as Paris and Milan to see where design trends are heading. I am not one to go with “trends” per se, but seeing what is out there is always interesting and provoking.
How does Amy Kalikow rest and relax?
I rest and relax with my family. I have four daughters I love and adore and any time spent with them is a joy and a gift. “Summer Amy” is the best version of myself. Being at home with family and friends, long days at the beach or out on the water, simply enjoying the outdoors is most special to me. I love to cook, especially on the grill, and coupled with some great music, I am a happy person.

Dear Mindie,
My best friend recently told me that she was bisexual. She said she was afraid to tell me, so I was the last of our group to find out about this new revelation. I feel really hurt and concerned about why she thought I would not be understanding. I hope this new dynamic does not change our friendship but at the same time I am unsure how I feel about her given how she handled telling me about her change in identity. I want to talk to her about it but worry she may misinterpret things and label me as homophobic or not a supportive friend. Please help me figure this out.
Sincerely, Left Out
Dear Left Out,
Coming out is the most cumbersome, sensitive and anxietydriven life experience one can go through. It’s hard to say what was going on in your friend’s mind as she contemplated sharing her news. It’s a fine dance with much at stake as one considers sharing with one’s family and friends a new discovery about themselves.
Many remain in the closet for months or years (sometimes forever) because of fear of acceptance, oppression and career dynamics, among a host of other reasons. It’s a difficult suggestion but I would try and think of how she must have been feeling when contemplating who to tell and when.
I do not know much about your friendship nor much about your personality but based on your narrative, I would assume that she was not sharing the information with you, initially, due to anything pertaining to you. You seem like a very compassionate, empathetic and caring friend and my hypothesis is that she simply needed to share information with friends on her own timeline. Maybe she was in a more comfortable environment or setting at the time she disclosed to your other friends she is bisexual?
There is only one way you can truly find out. You must talk to her. Every friendship needs a foundation of honesty and trust and if you’re feeling hurt or slighted, you can express that without being accusatory.
© Chris Ruetten
Sharing your feelings with a sense of concern and from a place of compassion for her is commendable and likely an act she will value and appreciate. There is only one way you can truly find out. You must talk to her. Every friendship needs a foundation of honesty and trust and if you’re feeling hurt or slighted, you can express that without being accusatory. Sharing your feelings with a sense of concern and from a place of compassion for her is commendable and likely an act she will value and appreciate.
From my perspective, I believe your discomfort with your friendship lies with the trust the two of you share and your need to feel more secure about that. That will only come from an open and honest conversation. I believe you’re mistakenly blending her identity revelation with your hurt feelings as they pertain to your friendship. Coming out is unique to everyone. Those who are brave enough to share their truth need to be surrounded by all the love and support that can get. It sounds to me like your friend is already the beneficiary of much love and support via your concern and desire for an honest relationship. You seem like a wonderful friend!
Much love and light,
Love, Mindie xo

A FLAVOR ADVENTURE IN WILDWOOD
THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN NJ’S BEST RESORT TOWN
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman | Photos by Kelley Mason
Known as a resort town since the 1950’s, Wildwood, NJ is one of those timeless locales that you have to visit at least once in your lifetime, especially if you live in New York. From eateries, shops, waterparks and thrill rides to sandy beaches and irreplaceable memories, Wildwood has so much for so many. And that includes an incredible summer flavor adventure you can’t find anywhere else; MudHen Brewing Company, Dogtooth Bar & Grill and Poppi’s.
After a long day on the beach, or enjoying the water parks, visitors to Wildwood undoubtedly are looking for something unique, tasty and frosty to lower their temperatures after a day under the sun. So, our first stop on this journey is MudHen Brewing Company, a 15-barrel “BrewHouse” with 300 barrels of fermentation space; in other words, a beer lover’s paradise!
Featuring award-winning brews from local Brewmaster Tony Cunha, MudHen Brewing Company is not your average brewery, nor is it your average resort town outpost for pedestrian beach food. MudHen Brewing Company serves up southern-inspired BBQ with a hint of local flare. They serve cuts of meat, and various BBQ offerings, that would make the most successful Manhattan steakhouse or Southern smokehouse jealous.
Showcasing amazing BBQ and unique dishes, there is something for every palette at MudHen Brewing Company.
To start, our reviewers ordered the delectable Cheesesteak Cornish (six homemade pastries filled with chopped ribeye steak & American cheese served with cheese sauce), remarking at how fresh, creamy and robust the flavors were; BBQ Pork Dip (roasted pork, onions, roasted corn, cheddar cheese, homemade bbq sauce & cream cheese served w/ hen chips & crostini), commenting on the deliciousness of the outpost’s BBQ sauce and the juiciness of the pork; finishing their appetizers with a more traditional and delicious summer selection, Street Corn on The Cob (buttered sweet corn, cajun, queso fresco, chipotle crema & cilantro).
They continued their meal with another unique offering by attempting to tackle the delicious yet seemingly bottomless BBQ Meatlover Mac & Cheese (pulled pork, smoked chicken, smoked brisket, homemade bbq sauce, béchamel cheese sauce & buttered breadcrumbs). One of our team went the more traditional route by ordering the brisket which, in their words, “blew the doors off of my palette with incredible flavors.” Rounding out the meal was a Toffee Cake that everyone agreed was sinfully delicious.
MudHen Brewing Company features a stunning outdoor garden and hosts live music and games throughout the season.

The next stop on our flavor journey is Dogtooth Bar & Grill. Located a block away from MudHen Brewing Company, Dogtooth Bar & Grill is the go-to spot for locals and tourists alike looking to enjoy the best of what Wildwood has to offer. Built on the notion of “Good food. Good beer. Great times,” Dogtooth Bar & Grill’s menu features a variety of delicious dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, from a mouthwatering burger to a hearty salad to a classic cocktail, this stunning and fun eatery has something for everyone.
Our reviewers went all-in on the variety of offerings at what can only be called the best “gastropub” in Wildwood. Our three team members reported nearly popping their belt buckles after finishing their delicious starters like Green Bean Fries (Spicy, panko-breaded, fried green beans served with chipotle ranch), Teriyaki Skewers (Three marinated & grilled chicken skewers served over Asian slaw), Pot Stickers (Six steamed dumplings filled with pork cabbage & green onions served with honey soy sauce), and Dogtooth Clams (15 clams in your choice of lemon white wine sauce or red sauce served with ciabatta bread for dipping). Not a single crumb, drop of sauce or clam was left, resulting in a euphoric feeling that can only come from a delicious, full meal.
For their main meals, our reviewers ordered The Original Pineapple Mango Crab Cakes (Two breaded & fried jumbo lump crab cakes topped with charred pineapple-mango salsa & chipotle aioli), Filet Mignon (8oz house-cut choice filet mignon), and the Shrimp, Crab and Artichoke (Shrimp, lump crab meat, artichokes & diced tomatoes tossed in a white wine sauce & served over angel hair pasta). Between the incredibly fresh crab cake with pineapple-mango salsa, the quality and juiciness of the filet mignon and the robust yet delectable flavors in the shrimp, crab and artichoke dish, all three diners asked when they can go back for another review! Of course that was helped by the fact that all three enjoyed filling in the cracks in their stomachs with the Choc Lava Cake (Chocolate cake with a rich melted chocolate center served with vanilla ice cream & whipped cream) which reportedly was one of the best they had ever had. Dogtooth Bar & Grill has an outdoor garden and features drink specials as well as DJ nights throughout the season. To learn more, please visit dogtoothbar.com
The last stop on this incredible Wildwood flavor adventure is a more traditional locale, Poppi’s Brick Oven Pizza & Kitchen. Yearning for a traditional Italian meal, our reviewers were chomping at the bit to try what many are calling the best Italian food in Wildwood. The trio sat in Poppi’s outdoor garden, taking in the fresh air. They started their meals with Fried Burrata (Creamy fried burrata cheese served with house crostini & Nonna’s marinara), Crispy Rice Balls (Three homemade arborio rice, smoked mozzarella cheese, marinara, panko-breaded & fried. Served with a side of lemon aioli and homemade marinara), and Fritto di Calamari (Fried squid tossed with parsley and parmesan cheese served with a side of lemon aioli and homemade marinara). The Burrata was so creamy that it left our reviewer speechless while the freshness of the cheese in the rice balls and the squid in the calamari floored the other two diners.
For their main dishes, our team enjoyed Poppi’s specialty, Margherita Brick Oven Pizza (San Marzano tomato sauce, homemade mozzarella, parmesan cheese, chopped garlic & fresh basil), the Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina (Homemade ricotta gnocchi, basil, and smoked mozzarella cheese with homemade marinara) and the Seafood Risotto (Arborio rice, sautéed shrimp, mussels, bay scallops and homemade pesto sautéed with basil and parmesan cheese in a white wine lemon garlic sauce). According to our diners, all three main dishes not only delivered on flavor and quality, but left them wanting to order more! Instead, the team decided to settle on two desserts to close out this adventure; Tiramisu (Lady fingers, layers of creamy custard & espresso topped with powdered cocoa) and Angioletti (Deep-fried homemade pizza dough strips drizzled with Nutella & topped with powdered sugar). Of course that didn’t help as our team could not finish their desserts, being too full from a delicious and robust, Italian meal. So they did what any other diner would do, took them home to finish their journey near their beds given the impending food coma from such a delicious series of meals. To learn more about Poppi’s, please visit poppisbrickoven.com.
GREAT BITES
TIPS FOR A PROPER BARBECUE
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
Nothing says summer like wiping the sweat, dripping off your forehead as you stand over a pit or grill. Then there are the endless amounts of carnivorously delicious smoke as steaks, burgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken and more barbecue their way to perfection. It is one of the most flavorful times of year!
Last month, I talked about food trends for summer. One focused on Weber’s latest innovation, a new pellet grill/smoker hybrid called the Searwood 600 Pellet Grill for $899.00 at (weber. com). I received a lot of emails about this story and wanted to follow up on some things, specifically around barbecue.
Backyard barbecuing is as American as Apple Pie. I spent many a summer weekend at my family’s country house learning how to barbecue from my Dad. By the time I was ten, I was grilling steaks to medium rare perfection, slathering ribs with homemade sauces and more. For me, who is fortunate enough to still have my father with us, those memories are some of my all-time favorites. But there are some key learnings I gleamed from my own almost 40 years of grilling that I wanted to pass along to our readers:
1 Not everyone is a pit master: There is nothing wrong with being a “weekend warrior”. As you spend more time over the grill, you will get better. As long as you approach barbecuing with an understanding of the grilling process, with safety in mind, you will still put out some delicious food! If you want to try new cuts of meat, or new sauces/rubs or even a new cooking method, go for it! But remember to try these new efforts on a small scale. After all, with today’s food prices you want to be careful!
2 Always cook more food than you need: Trust me on this one. I will typically barbecue 1.5 times what we are going to eat for a meal so we have leftovers. This way you can continue to enjoy that yummy barbecue char for the first couple of days of the workweek (and, to be honest, it also makes it a lot easier when planning quick meals during the week).
4 The Butcher: I cannot stress this enough…the quality and cut of meat is vital. Yes, you can buy wholesale amounts of ground beef for burgers. They will be okay, not great. That’s where the local butcher comes in. No, I don’t mean the guy behind the meat counter at Gristedes or D’Agostino’s. I mean a real local butcher who knows where their meats came from. In Manhattan, I will always recommend Esposito’s at 500 Ninth Avenue. It is a multigeneration family business I have been going to my entire life. Robert Esposito is the current owner, learning his craft from his Dad and Uncle. Brilliant guy who knows his cuts like no other! And if you don’t live near Esposito’s, there are plenty of other amazing services that deliver deliciousness. I love Wild Fork Foods (wildforkfoods.com) as they have SO much variety to choose from, especially around major holidays like Fourth of July. They also have some unique cuts of Bison and more! I am fairly new to Wild Fork, but I like them more and more each day! Lastly, I have known the folks over at DeBragga Meats (debragga. com) for a VERY long time. The owner’s wife is a lifelong friend of my mother’s and I have worked with them a handful of times. Brilliant company on every level. DeBragga Meats services the top restaurants and steakhouses in the tri-state area, so you know their product is top shelf. You are paying for serious quality and generations of experience. Worth every penny!
DESSERT
Who doesn’t love a deep, rich, velvety smooth chocolate cake? Moreover, who doesn’t love Bailey’s Irish Cream? I love both so I decided to combine them. OMG…this is a dessert that is THE definition of sinful. Enjoy at your own risk!
Ingredients
Chocolate Cake
· 2 cups granulated sugar
· 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
· 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
· 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
· 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
· 1 teaspoon salt
· 2 large eggs
· 1 cup buttermilk
· 1/2 cup oil (vegetable or canola oil)
· 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
· 1 cup boiling water
Irish Cream Buttercream
· 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
· 4 cups powdered sugar
· 1/4 cup Baileys Irish Cream
· 2 tsp vanilla extract
· 2-3 tbsp heavy cream (optional)
Preparation
Heat oven to 375°F. Grease two 8 or 9-inch round baking pans. I like to cut a round piece of wax or parchment paper for the bottom of the pan also, to make sure the cake comes out easily.
For the Cake
· Stir together sugar, flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in large bowl. In a separate bowl combine the eggs, buttermilk, oil and vanilla and mix well. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix to combine. Stir in boiling water (batter will be very thin). Pour batter into prepared pans.
· Bake for 25 - 35 minutes (depending on your cake pan size. The 9’’ pan takes less time to bake) or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean or with few crumbs. Cool 5 minutes in the pan and then invert onto wire racks to cool completely.
For the Irish Cream Buttercream
· In a large bowl, beat softened butter until creamy.
· Gradually add powdered sugar, beating on low speed until combined.
· Add Baileys Irish Cream and vanilla extract. Beat on high speed until fluffy. If needed, add heavy cream to reach desired consistency. Frost the cooled cakes with Baileys buttercream frosting.
Bon appetit!
THE GREAT JONES EXPERIENCE
ELEVATING FARM-TO-TABLE CUISINE WITH LOCAL SPIRITS
By Anne Raso
Visit The Restaurant at Great Jones Distilling Co. to find a speakeasy vibe and romantic lighting and a menu unlike any other in Manhattan. In fact, the waitstaff will ask if you want a little taste of the bourbon or rye made on the premises. You can tour the facilities before you dine! The Great Jones Distilling Co. products are displayed in large glass bookcases in the 20s-style brown and white tiled foyer just in front of the restaurant. Among these spirits is a super elegantly packaged Jean-Michel Basquiat bourbon featuring his brightly colored artwork (his studio was nearby)!
You will find the food as enticing as the artisanal liquor offered. Executive Chef Daniel Wright (raised in Upstate New York)—a veteran of such acclaimed restaurants as Bourbon Steak House, Le Bernardin, Saison, and PEAK makes locally sourced produce, meat, and fish the centerpiece of his dishes. He considers his strongest kitchen skill to be elevating classic American dishes. He works long hours to help source ingredients for his kitchen and put new twists on American favorites. The results are amazing!
Chef Wright revealed some of his favorite dishes on the menu. One was the Filet Mignon in a classic Madera sauce, while another was the Fois Gras Torchon cured in bourbon, which he says is even better if you ask for a whiskey pairing.

FROM BURATTA TO BRANZINO
The small local burrata plate has Jersey Girl Burrata, charred tomatoes, pesto, and arugula. It is a fitting example of farmfresh ingredients made into the perfect medley of dairy and greens. The charred tomatoes were incredibly juicy and sweet. Our shared entrees were the Branzino with Haricot Verts and Lemon Brown Butter and Hanger Steak with Wild Mushrooms and Cipollini Onions (which had a small bunch of Roasted Broccolini scattered on top). The stunning presentations and substantial portions dazzled, but the quality of the Branzino and Hanger Steak was top-notch. We did not need a steak knife to cut the tender hanger steak flowing with juice.
SAVORY ‘N SATISFYING SIDES
Our sides were the Potato Pave with Brown Butter, Grana Padano, and Truffle Aioli, which melted in our mouths, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Red Pickled Onions and Parmesan Cheese, which was an odd combo that worked well (as the house-made pickled onions provided a kick.
Desserts are highly memorable. The Great Jones Rye Baked Alaska features Salted Peanut Butter and Caramelized Banana
The rye stays in the background on this dessert as it is truly a symphony of sweet and salty. The Warm Dark Chocolate Brownie with Caramelized White Chocolate is a fantasy dessert for anyone who loves chewy and chocolatey brownies. Oddly enough, the Sticky Toffee Pudding is made with carrot cake, then topped with Great Jones Rye Toffee Sauce and sided with Cream Cheese Ice Cream. It’s decadent and delightful— and perfect for sharing. Those who like their desserts not so sweet can try the Selection of Seasonal Cheeses with Great Jones Bourbon Apple Compote and Toasted Anadama.
FUTURE FLAVORS
Chef Wright noted there will be menu surprises coming for summer. “The team at Great Jones is updating their crudos, canapés, and cocktails. The Hamachi fish (Yellowfin Tuna) will be cured in Kombu (Japanese seaweed) and served with house-made cucumber kimchi. Mixed with crème fraiche, the kimchi juice perfectly balances this dish.”
He also added that there will be advancements in liquor pairings using Great Jones Distilling Co. products: “The restaurant is developing a savory flight pairing featuring canapé-sized bites. While it already offers a delightful pastry flight with tiramisu infused with straight bourbon, sponge cake with Great Jones Four Grain Bourbon, and a chocolate bonbon with Great Jones Empire Rye, I’m eager to introduce a savory option. Though pairing savory dishes with whiskey poses more challenges than wine, I am excited about the potential and look forward to the results.”
Folks with a sweet tooth will be curious about the new desserts featuring the distillery’s products. “More of our pastries will incorporate bourbon flavors. We recently introduced a Caramel Mousse made with straight bourbon. Additionally, our Chocolate Bar is served with vanilla bourbon ice cream.”
One thing’s for sure—there is no place quite like The Restaurant at Great Jones Distilling Co. The speakeasy decor is undeniably New York. One of the best-kept secrets about The Restaurant at Great Jones Distilling Co. is that you can get $11 food and cocktails via their special Prohibition Hour menu!

BISTROS, BRASSERIES & CAFÉS
A GOLD MEDEL FOR DINING IN PARIS
By Irvina Lew
Americans flocking to the Paris 2024 Olympics look forward to morning cappuccinos and croissants; afternoon crèpes, babas au rhum or îles flottantes and late day apéros, bières or coupes de Champagne. More pressing is finding authentic restaurants to dine à la française and celebrate Parisian cuisine. These are just a few recommendations and identified by arrondissements.
LA BAUHINIA, 16th
The 19th-century river view Palace that houses Shangri-La Paris was designed to showcase the elegance and grandeur worthy of Prince Roland Napoleon, the emperor’s nephew. Executive Chef Quentin Testart heads La Bauhinia, its gourmet restaurant, in a spacious window-walled ground floor space overlooking a landscaped garden over which the nearby Eiffel Tower looms high, like a soaring tree. Our dinner started with beautiful bread, long hand-shaped bread sticks, slices, and madeleines. Fish and seafood are the chef’s specialties, and Asian-influenced selections include Tuna Tataki, Sesame Marinated Shrimp, and Crispy Rice Tartare (tuna or shrimp). Favorite French fish are for sharing: Bar, Saint Pierre, Sole, Grilled Lobster or Turbot. Plus, there’s Wagyu beef and poultry. Chef Pâtissier Maxence Barbot prepared an amazing Baba au Rhum, for which the waiter used a “Whiskey Thief” to extract extra rhum from the decanter. Info: labauhiniarestaurant.com
CARETTE, 3rd and 16th
BELLEFEUILLE, 16th
Guests feel the magic of Saint James Paris from the wrought iron gates of the 50,000 square-foot landscaped estate to the entry fountain and, inside, where interior design icon Laura Gonzalez reimagined the high-ceilinged, neoclassic chateau, a Relais & Chateaux affiliate. Here, guests and club members enjoy the best burgers at Bar Bibliothèque, a cozy retreat with book-lined walls, comfortable leather sofas, and armchairs atop thick patterned rugs. For gastronomy, they dine at Bellefeuille, the in-house destination restaurant, where one-star Michelin Chef Gregory Garimbay reigns and which was also awarded a Michelin Green star for sustainability. I opted for Vitello tonnato, Suprème de Volaille (chicken from Landes), and crèpe brulée. I tasted the Warm Lentil Salad, and Artichoke prepared barigoule style (braised in white wine and olive oil).

This appealing bakery café has two well-located venues. Jean and Madeleine Carette opened their namesake spot on Place du Trocadero with a view of the Eiffel Tower in 1927. The outdoor terrace under the arcade’s exposed bricks is at the Place des Vosges in the super-trendy Marais. Carette serves specialty pastries, macarons, and baked goods, including their Paris-Carette, a Paris-Brest made with praline on a choux pastry. Their hot chocolate served in a silver bowl topped with a swirl of Chantilly whipped cream, rivals Angelina’s (but without long lines). I savored Tarte Tatin, and my friend loved the crèpe. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner choices range from eggs to saumon fumé, tomato and mozzarella, onion soup, quiche, salads, and sandwiches to plats, such as Boeuf Bourguignon or Entrecôte or Escargots and Linguine. DESSIRIER SEAFOOD, 17th
Super chef Michel Rostang took over Dessirier Seafood, a specialty restaurant near his exemplary Maison Rostang in the 17th arrondissement in 1996. Today, Caroline and Sophie, the fifth-generation culinarian’s daughters, head Rostang Père & Filles. Everything looks, feels, and tastes the best within the elegant, curved contemporary space textured with mosaics, wood, velvet, and leather. There’s handmade Beillevairebutter from the Loire Valley, a wine list curated by Caroline Rostang, and the freshest catch from artisanal fishermen in Normandy, Brittany, and Vendée prepared by Chef Olivier Fontaine, formerly at famed La Tour d’Argent, Among Les Plateaux, we indulged in langoustine and admired platters of Les Crustacés, starring homard bleu, Brittany’s famed blue lobster. There are oyster and shrimp options and classics, such as bouillabaisse, scampi terrine and fritto misto, salmon, and fish in puff pastry à la Bocuse. My chocolate soufflé and my friend’s citrus-studded treat were divine. Info: restaurantdessirier.com
LE PERRAUDIN, 5th,
LE GRAND CAFÉ FAUCHON, 8th
Fauchon has been synonymous with culinary excellence since 1886 when Auguste Fauchon launched a luxury food store across from La Madeleine Church in Paris. In 2018, Fauchon L’Hôtel Paris, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, opened nearby; recently, Baptiste Limouzin started as Chef de Cuisine at Le Grand Café Fauchon. Pink, the dominant accent color of the Fauchon hotel brand, appears on velvet chairs, carpet patterns, awnings, armoires, and even closet lights. Menu items printed in pink ink indicate gourmet Fauchon foods, such as fig compote (alongside the duck foie gras), strawberry and rose petal jam (with smoked salmon); mango chutney (with roasted asparagus and Basque bacon), and zucchini spread with goat cheese (aside snails in black garlic butter). Chef Limouzin served us my favorite “plat” in Paris: a tender veal cutlet sourced from southwest France, sliced for two and served with vine shoots. Info: grandcafefauchon.fr/menus-restaurant-paris-8
This small, typically French, bistro with red and white checked tablecloths and mirrored walls feels as authentic as it is, with a menu of favorites: boeuf Bourgignon, confit of duck, veal kidneys or set meals (16 to 30 Euros). The Perraudins turned the Left Bank café (near the imposing Panthéon) into a restaurant in 1872. Sungheui and Pierre Sahut, who worked for Chef Alain Ducasse for eight years, are the newin-2023 owners; they continue to perpetuate the Perraudin tradition—including the carefully curated suppliers—and add their sophisticated gastronomic touch. My friend enjoyed escargots, and we shared a simple green salad, which was the most tender and delicately dressed young shoots. Info: leperraudin.fr/en
LE TRAIN BLEU, 12th
THIOU au Norman, 8th
Thiouis is named for owner Chef Apiradee Thirakomen, aka Thiou, whose specialty Thai dishes—particularly her prawn, soybean, and Thai chive studded “Best Pad Thai in the city”—have long attracted fans. Newly housed within the modernist Hotel Norman, near the Arc de Triomphe, guests dine at tables under large rectangular mirrored panes inset into the ceiling and centered with golden glass balls that reflect the light. The chef’s dishes incorporate top French ingredients and creative Thai sauces. We started with a rosé Champagne by Veuve Clicquot (Barbe Nicole Ponsardin introduced the first rosé). Our extensive menu sampling included: thinly sliced Artichoke Poivrade marinated in lemon juice and garnished with sliced radishes, fresh herbs, and pine nuts; Ravioli de Crevettes, a prawn ravioli coated with a lemongrass scented coconut cream and lemongrass; and Crispy Softshell Crabs with green mango and Thai herbs. Info: hotelnorman.com/fr/restaurant-thiou.html
Rostang Père & Filles operates Le Train Bleu, an extravagant, over-the-top, Belle Époque destination restaurant with a two-star Michelin rating where impeccable French fare is served from early morning through dinner, which features tableside carved meats, flambéed dishes, and traditional cuisine. Built during the 1900 Universal Exhibition as a “station buffet” inside the Gare de Lyon train station and deemed a Monument Historique in 1972, the venue is reached via a glorious, opera-worthy double staircase from the train station or an elevator outside it. The extraordinary interior showcases arched Musée d’Orsay-sized windows overlooking the busy platform, gilded ceilings, plaster sculptures, magnificent chandeliers, and Frédéric Montenard’s paintings of Villefranche and Monaco plus long, narrow, Orient Express-style dining salons decorated in blue. YAO RESTAURANT
A NEW GENERATION OF CANTONESE
By Patricia Canole
Chinese food in America has never had a fair chance. It’s been relegated to conjure up the household names of General Tso’s and Orange Chicken, both of which are good—but so far from the truth of what Chinese cuisine can be. However, in a one-of-a-kind city like New York, you can be sure to find a few select gems that have great taste and are authentic. Chef-owner Kenny Leung’s new endeavor with Thomas Tang of the acclaimed August Gatherings is looking to be one such place.
Located in the FiDi District on Pearl Street, YAO is an expansive space meticulously designed to display Chinese culture and showcase beloved modern Cantonese dishes. With a cozy and welcoming ambiance, the restaurant invites guests to immerse themselves in a culinary journey that pays homage to the rich tapestry of Cantonese cuisine. The sleek, minimalist lines are softened by warm and decorative creating an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere. The dining room is intimate yet spacious, ensuring a private and comfortable dining experience.
A CHEF’S DREAM
Chef Kenny’s journey began at the tender age of 15 when he immersed himself in a government culinary program in China, delving deep into the artistry of Cantonese cuisine. His formative years were spent honing fundamental skills, complemented by an apprenticeship at Canton Culinary School.
In 1988, he moved to New York City, venturing into the bustling culinary landscape, and further enhancing his culinary repertoire. In 2015, he co-founded August Gatherings with Thomas Tang, who has been immersed in hospitality since childhood. He grew up as the son of one of China’s top chefs who catered for regal events. He met Chef Kenny while working together in the original location of August Gatherings. The two became fast friends and decided to join forces to purchase the Canal Street location of August Gatherings and have been partners ever since.
Now, with the recent opening of YAO, Chef Kenny and his team of 20 cooks strive to create a canvas that highlights the past, present and future of Cantonese cuisine and offers diners an a la carte menu and a seven-course tasting menu named Jia Yan, a Chinese word loosely translated to “a celebratory family gathering.”
A SUPERB MENU
YAO’s menu is a masterful fusion of traditional Chinese flavors and modern culinary techniques, highlighting the chef’s creativity and skill. The dishes are meticulously crafted, carefully considering each element, and beautifully presented.
We opted to try the Jin Yan Tasting Menu, which is nothing short of a feast for the eyes—and appetite. Some of the highlights included Deep deepfried Hokkaido Scallops followed by Shikoku Bamboo Shrimp Dumpling, which is a complex play on the traditional Chinese dumpling; it is made by combining charcoal and bamboo from Japan, grounded for two weeks to produce a black color of shell. The filling is made with shrimp, then shelled and hand-minced to create texture through aeration. It is finished with a shaved black truffle and served in beautiful pottery from Spain.
The banquet continues with Gold Leaf Wrapped Fried Abalone, sustainably sourced wild abalone from South Africa, which is deep fried, sitting atop a crispy wonton skin with house made sauce encased in edible gold leaf. One of the main stars of the progression is the Alaskan King Crab Wensi Tofu Soup, in which Chef Kenny uses immaculate knife skills to create razor-thin slices of tofu, taking hours of preparation. The meat from the crab is then pulled from the shell, hand-cut into large chunks, and added to the soup.
Grilled Angus Short Ribs, tenderized with kiwi, drizzled tableside in a pear and oyster sauce. The next course follows with Snow Pea Shoots in Chicken Broth. The final course is Longevity Noodles with Wild Octopus that is slow cooked for six hours; it is then laid on a bed of Hong Kong-style noodles, with chanterelle mushrooms infused with a special sauce.
Chef-Owner
THE PERFECT ENDING
The meal concludes with a seasonal signature dessert: the deepfried mochi Sesame Ball filled with red bean paste. Served alongside a homemade seasonal fuji apple sorbet, it offers a delightful contrast in flavors and temperatures.
Although not part of the Jin Yan Tasting Menu, no meal at YAO would be complete without sampling their dumplings. The Xiao Long Bao, or soup dumplings, are a true masterpiece, with their delicate wrappers encasing a rich, flavorful broth that bursts forth with each bite.
YAO’s beverage program is equally impressive. It features a thoughtfully curated selection of wines and cocktails designed to complement the flavors of the cuisine. The knowledgeable staff are always on hand to offer expert recommendations, ensuring a harmonious pairing experience.
YAO Restaurant is a gem in New York’s dining scene, offering a unique and unforgettable culinary journey. With its exceptional ambiance, impeccable service, and innovative cuisine, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a remarkable dining experience. YAO is sure to leave lasting impression.

BORDERLANDS
Not yet rated Lovers of the sci-fi video game have been waiting for almost ten years for this wild adventure-comedy flick to make it to the big screen; and if everyone in it looks younger than they are, it’s because shooting completed in 2021! Special effects, strikes and other things slowed down this tale of a galactic bounty hunter (Cate Blanchett) searching a faraway planet for a missing girl. She’s got a very weird gang, including Kevin Hart, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis, all chewing the scenery in this Eli Roth flick that unfolds at breakneck speed on August 9.
TWISTERS
PG-13
DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE
Marvel is positive that joining up Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is a sure box-office bet. It’s the first MCU to be rated R, as well as Wolverine’s return to the screen after a seven-year absence and Deadpool’s entry into the Marvel Multiverse. If all that seems complicated, just go along for the ride, as Reynolds’ Deadpool character is usually pretty funny, and Jennifer Garner returns as Elektra. Plus, rumor has it that Taylor Swift, Ben Affleck and Patrick Stewart may just turn up, too, on July 26th.
Actor Glen Powell is on a roll, racking up hits both on the big screen (Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone but You) and small (Hit Man). Now he’s the leading man in this storm-swept thriller as tornadoes blow across Oklahoma in a swirl of terrifying special effects. Loosely based on Twister, the 1996 Oscar-nominated megahit, Powell and his co-stars Maura Tierney, Kiernan Shipka, and Daisy Edgar-Jones are once again chasing twisters across the Midwest. Watch for a flying cow, as it’s likely to fly across the screen yet again

Gru and the Minions return, hooray! Since 2010, they have been making us all laugh at their diabolical antics. In this fourth installment, along with his wife Lucy and Margo, Edith, and Agnes, new adventures begin, including the addition of Gru Jr., who’s a chip off the old block. Together they take on new evil archenemies (voiced by Will Ferrell and Sofia Vergara) on this continuing saga that continues to delight kids and their parents, too.
The classic children’s book comes to life in this inspired adaptation of the Crockett Johnson picture book created in 1955. Zachary Levi stars as Harold, who’s been drawing his world for decades when he discovers that there’s a real world. So, he draws himself into it, and the resulting adventures as a real man make for an outrageous adventure that he shares with Moose (Lil Rel Howery), Terry (Zooey Deschanel), and a whole cast of actual human characters.

Natalie Portman comes to the small screen in her first series, a noir nightmare set in Baltimore in the mid-1960s. She’s a mother turned reporter, who quickly gets embroiled in the underbelly of the city when a child goes missing. Based on the Laura Lippman bestselling novel (not the Raymond Chandler classic), this limited series is a genre-bending mélange of storytelling that co-stars Moses Ingram and Pruitt Taylor Vince.

Anthony Hopkins loves dark drama, so it’s no surprise that he’s leading this new take on an old story. He’s Roman Emperor Vespasian, who loves giving his people what they want—gory deaths in the Colosseum (and beyond). Director Roland Emmerich, who’s known for his epic films like Independence Day, brings his over-the-top sensibility to this ten-part series filled with blood, guts, and some very pretty people, including Angeliqa Devi and Lara Wolf.
EVEN DARKER COMEDIES
There’s no funnier novelist than Carl Hiaasen, and happily Bad Monkey, his hilarious Florida-centric tale of crime in the Keys is coming in August as a 10-part series. Vince Vaughn stars as an ex-police detective whose crappy new job is as a health inspector gets interesting when he finds a human arm during his checkups. Enter a bunch of only-found-in-Florida weirdos and criminals, as well as that monkey who’s up to no good, and this one’s a comedic keeper..

While that doesn’t sound too comical, this new series starring Tony Hale of Veep fame knows just how to combine farce and social status satire with sexual shenanigans and other outrageous behavior that’s sure to keep you watching. Zosia Mamet, Tanya Reynolds, and SaoirseMonica Jackson co-star in this wild romp.

If you’ve never seen Time Bandits, Terry Gilliam’s incredibly clever and creative 1981 fantasy, start with that. Then get ready for Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s take on the same story in this zany series that follows a boy (Kal-El Tuck) who discovers a time-travel portal in his bedroom. His jump into history, along with a gang of thieves led by Lisa Kudrow, is filled with wacky moments and astonishing special effects, just like the original movie.
KEEPING YOUR PET COOL
SUMMERTIME TIPS & TRICKS TO BEAT THE HEAT
By Kate Perry
As a dog trainer in NYC, I have many unique things to deal with when working with dogs. There are the loud city sounds of construction, traffic, sirens, all sorts of people, the highrise elevator buildings, and the multiple door thresholds to pass through before stepping outside, not to mention the subway sounds rumbling below us.
To top it all off, global warming is now affecting seasonal changes, making each season more extreme and unpredictable. With the summer months upon us, we are likely to reach scorching temperatures.
HOT TIPS FOR A COOL DOG
Here are some tips to help keep your pooch cool during your walks in the city and some safety training tips for off-leash summertime if you are heading to the country or the beaches.
First, some reminders: A dog’s natural temperature is between 101-102, and because most have fur coats, keeping them as cool as possible is essential. Aside from panting, the only other area of a dog’s body that helps them cool down is through their sweat glands in their paw pads. Remember, your dog’s lifestyle differs significantly from its wild ancestors. Before domestication, dogs were able to adjust to outside temperatures more efficiently. Compare that to our modern-day pooches living alongside us in climatecontrolled environments. Awareness of how high temperatures can affect your dog is important.
It is especially important to remember that the brachycephalic breeds (Pugs, French and English Bulldogs, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers and Boxers) are more prone to overheating and heat exhaustion than other breeds. Be especially careful when playing and walking outside in the extreme heat.
Things to consider helping cool your pooch during those hot summer days.
· Cooling mats and cooling vests.
· Kiddie pools set up in your backyard or terraces for them to stand in cold water.
· Keep walks short on extra hot days and on the shady side of the streets.
· Time the walk to be extra early or later in the evenings to avoid the extra heat.
· One of my city tips is to stop at dog-friendly bank foyers to get a blast of their air conditioning while walking.
· Offer ice cubes, frozen watermelon, or frozen blueberries as cooling treats after a walk.
If you must use a muzzle on your dog outside, avoid using a mesh muzzle as it constricts the dog’s mouth, preventing them from being able to pant. Instead, use a basket muzzle as it is aerated and allows them to pant easily, which is crucial for them to cool themselves appropriately. Dogs can also drink water with a basket muzzle on. Always have a collar with an ID tag on in case your dog runs off, and make sure to microchip and register your pooch in case the collar and ID come off.
CALM & QUIET
Many dogs become very scared and anxious during the Fourth of July fireworks. So, if your pooch is likely to be nervous, be sure to give it a safe, quiet place in your home. A spacious partially covered crate, a playpen, or a gated-off area like your bedroom are good options.
I often suggest adding white noise to help drown out outside sounds, especially if the fireworks are nearby. Add high-value occupiers to keep them distracted. Some of my favorites are Busy Buddy twist-and-treat, hollow, sterilized bones filled with peanut butter or cream cheese, high-IQ puzzle games, and deer antlers or knuckle bones, which are great, too—adding some exercise and playtime before the festivities will also help to tire them out.
For the more anxious dogs, consider some natural calming aids like Thunder Shirts, but be sure to keep your home wellventilated and extra cool with AC if you use one since they can overheat very quickly. I also suggest DAP collars (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) and DAP plug-ins and sprays. These products emulate the mother dogs’ hormones for their pups, which can often help during these times. Or talk to your vet for a stronger, prescribed, calming medication. CBD for dogs can sometimes help as well, but do your research and talk with your vet.
If you plan to let your dog off-leash on the beaches and in country settings this summer, the most important command I recommend is “COME/RECALL.” This command can also be practiced in building hallways, the backyard, or the dog park. It can become a lifesaving command.
COME commands a dog to go to its owner when they hear their voice. COME should never be associated with punishment, which would defeat the whole purpose of them wanting to get to you. You want to use a happy, elated voice with a higherpitched tone and avoid using a stern voice.
Here is some guidance on teaching this command:
1. Place your dog in SIT/STAY if that’s a reliable behavior or have someone hold your dog at the other end of the room.
2. Call your dog’s name once with a happy, high-pitched tone to get their attention.
3. Then move your arm down with the open palm facing towards the dog while enthusiastically saying “COME.”
4. Once the dog comes to you, gently take hold of their collar from under their muzzle/chin, then mark with the word “YES” and follow with a treat from the other hand. This step aims to create acceptance from your pooch in having their collar handled without them squirming or resisting being held. Holding the collar before giving the treat teaches impulse control and maintains safety so your dog doesn’t run off again.
5. Repeat steps 1-4 for 5-10 repetitions in different parts of your home. The sequence is: first call your dog’s name, then say the command “COME,” then gently reach and hold the collar while marking “YES” with a treat. “YES,” tells a dog they have finished the job and serves as a release cue.
6. Once you have a reliable “COME” in one location, practice the command in different locations with different distances. Then, incorporate delayed rewards and jackpot rewards for faster responses. Delayed rewards help with impulse control. Jackpot rewards mean two or three pieces of food/treat at one time instead of one. This keeps the dog more engaged the next time.
7. Once the COME command is reliable indoors, take it outdoors and repeat the above sequence.
MOTIVATION IS KEY
NOTE: When outdoors, train this command with him/her on an extralong leash and use a variety of high value treats to keep them motivated. Dogs don’t generalize very well, so be sure to master each location before moving to the next one. I usually suggest ten different locations and distractions while changing the treats.
If you are training a puppy this summer, remember they love to follow their owners, so be sure to take advantage of this when teaching “COME.” When a pup follows you, practice short-distance commands and gently introduce reaching for the collar. Include praising and treating as you do this. The goal is to turn the “COME” command into a pleasurable, reflexive behavior that is fun to do with you and your pup.
Another way to incorporate the command is to play round-robin “COME” with your dog and friends while at home. Start with everyone close together, gradually increase the distances, and then build up to them coming around corners.
We are building one success on top of another, so only proceed if the current level has become successful. Never be afraid to step backward to a level the dog is already good at. This enhances their confidence. All good dog trainers understand that regression and confusion are part of the learning process. However, we want to keep those emotional states to a minimum. Instead, happiness and creativity are the emotional states we want to elicit while working with our pups.
Slow and steady wins the race!

REBECCA & GREG REMMEY OF DEVOUR POWER
By Jenna Guarneri | Photos Courtesy of Devour Media
Meet Rebecca Leigh West-Remmey and Greg Remmey, the dynamic duo behind the viral sensation Devour Power, captivating over 1.8 million Instagram followers and 2.9 million TikTok fans with their mouth-watering content. These foodies and storytellers are also the founders of Devour Media, a food-driven content studio dedicated to boosting engagement and driving revenue growth for restaurants and brands.
Their journey began in 2012 when they first started dating, and since then, they’ve become the go-to couple for creating irresistible, viral food content.
The couple has journeyed to Chicago with the sole purpose of sampling as many deep-dish pizza slices as possible. One spontaneous Tuesday, they found themselves without plans and decided to catch a train from NYC to Philadelphia to taste what Americans claim to be the best cheesesteak.
In their quest for popular favorites, they’ve discovered numerous ordinary dishes uniquely transformed into extraordinary, one-of-a-kind creations that they knew everyone needed to see. Their goal is to spread positivity throughout their social media community. They achieve this by spending time in the kitchen with cooks eager to share their love language, food, with their followers. The couple aims to highlight the charm of mom-and-pop shops and family-run restaurants in their community, all while having fun in the process.
New York Lifestyles caught up with Rebecca and Greg for an interesting conversation about their journey in the world of food and social media influence, exploring their inspirations, challenges, and the secrets behind their viral success.
What has your journey been like since starting the company 12 years ago?
Rebecca: 2012 is when we literally put our first post on Instagram.
Greg: We got together and, like any new couple does, they go out to restaurants. I always wanted to have some sort of blog, and I just decided to start posting the food. At the beginning, it was a blog called Meals and Reels. So, it was food and movie reviews. But after putting up a few posts, we quickly realized that no one cared about the movie reviews whatsoever and just wanted to see the food. So, we scraped it, changed it to Devour Power, and it’s just been all about food ever since. It’s really a passion of ours.
When did you realize that you had something big happening that was beyond just a hobby?
R: About nine years ago, we had a restaurant where we posted a couple of photos of cool food. They reached out to us and asked if we would consider running their Instagram. At that point, I was in real estate condo/co-op sales, and Greg was a neurophysiologist in brain and spinal surgeries in the city. We sat down and decided if we don’t try now, we might regret it. Once it was successful with the first restaurant, they referred us to another restaurant, and it snowballed very organically.
How do you keep that authenticity going in your content and how do you remain true to your mission as a brand?
G: I think being able to keep our authenticity has been easy because we know what food we like to be around, and we go into it if it will be a fun mutual partnership.”
R: You must be authentic because people go to these restaurants. That is the whole point of this entire thing—to shine a light on smaller restaurants that have fantastic food.
How do you keep evolving and innovating as social media is rapidly changing?
G: Whenever there’s a new app that comes out that people are really excited about, you see the users going up. I mean, I’m going in on it, especially if it’s video based. Our whole thing is being consistent and constantly putting out content that we really like. Don’t overcomplicate it.
When you pivoted from a hobby to a business, what were the obstacles like? What was your experience?
R: About nine years ago, we decided to start Devour Media because we wanted to be authentic and have fun on Devour Power, but we also wanted to make it a business to satisfy the clients’ needs. I don’t know if we had major obstacles, but I’d say my biggest was learning not to look at social media comments. People hide behind their screens and can say very mean things. I haven’t looked at comments in years.
G: I just block and bless.
You’ve taken a firm position of creating content that only highlights the positive features that a restaurant has to offer. What made you go this route, and why this perspective?
R: I would say because we both grew up in hospitality, more so Greg; his family owned a restaurant. We spent so many years behind the scenes. Every day you see something different—the chef is sick or he’s not there. You can’t blow up someone’s entire life over one plate of food that didn’t come out the way it should have. If they weren’t a decent restaurant, they wouldn’t survive here in New York City. We just like to spread positivity. When we go to a restaurant, we order the entire menu. Also, we’re two different people—there’s one thing I love, which you may not. There’s nothing wrong with highlighting something and not talking about the one dish that you didn’t like.
R: Just because I don’t like something at a restaurant doesn’t mean you’re not going to like it.
What’s the future like for Devour Power and Devour Media?
G: I’m going to restart a separate Instagram that we had during quarantine called Devour Kitchen. It will be me and our employee Alex creating over-the-top devour-ish foods and comfort meals and putting up the recipes.
R: We have our cookbook, Devour NYC, where actual restaurant owners contributed their recipes, broken down into single-serve portions. I would love to work on another book again with Greg’s recipes.

MY NEW YORK STORY
JOEL WALDMAN: HUMOR IS THE BEST ELIXIR
By Mindie Barnett
After leaving his award-winning broadcast news career, Joel Waldman—who reported for Fox 5 New York and later a national correspondent for Fox News—joined forces with his Holocaust survivor mom. The 80+ Karmela is the creator of a podcast, making her the country’s most “seasoned” one to date! Their podcast, Surviving the Survivor, highlights the two lovinglyyet-dysfunctional mother-son duo as they delve into what is now known as a true-crime hit. But the real story unfolds as they learn things about each other, so much so that Joel put his mother’s life story in book form: Surviving the Survivor, centers on struggles, sickness and survival!
We met with Joel Waldman to learn more about his new career as a successful podcaster, author, and son.
What inspired you to write a book with your mom?
As a broadcast journalist for 27 years, most recently as a Fox News national correspondent, I’ve always been curious about people and their stories. Ironically, I knew so little about the person closest to me: my mom. We rarely discussed surviving the Holocaust, mainly because my mother still refuses to dwell on the negative. She wanted me to be inspired by positive events and subconsciously felt sharing her story might be too difficult for me to grasp fully. But it wasn’t just the Holocaust. My mom also lost a son and, most recently, her husband of 63 years. I realized during this time she wouldn’t be here indefinitely. As we affectionately call her Karm, she is a walking, breathing piece of history. With minutes endlessly ticking away, I knew it was time to finally get to work.
As a broadcast journalist, you’ve interviewed nearly everyone in the news. Was it any different with your mom?
I began interviewing her about her life: her Holocaust story, the loss of her son (my brother), the illness that stole her husband, and her thoughts on being one of the oldest active podcasters in America. She and I co-host the true-crime podcast Surviving the Survivor, which has over 100K subscribers and has had over 2.5 million views on YouTube.
I recorded hours and hours of conversations between us on all these topics and life with the capital “L,” and the result was the book Surviving the Survivor. It’s not your mother’s Holocaust story: I joke because it’s mine ... and it’s amusing, more than slightly dysfunctional, and aweinspiring. It’s a feel-good book that will make you laugh, cry, and think you’re normal.
What are the top three lessons you hope every reader walks away with?
Even the darkest moments in life cannot keep one from remaining positive, strong, and powerful…We’re all a little bit crazy. There’s no such thing as normal, and that’s okay…Our quirks and foibles are our true strengths. Humor is an elixir, even when life is the most difficult.
What was it like growing up with a mother who is also a Holocaust survivor?
It was both a beautiful blessing and a heavy burden. That is why I named the book Surviving the Survivor. Karm is notoriously hard on me because of all the pain she experienced. Until I wrote this book, I never understood the term “generational trauma.” But my mom’s struggles penetrated me through some osmosis. She worried a lot—and that created a lot of anxiety within me.
She was also always afraid of being prevented from accomplishing her goals because the Nazis stopped her world in its tracks when they stole her father and grandfather from her. So, she’s impossible to stop. She pushes forward no matter the circumstances and has emblazoned this powerful lesson on me, too. We move forward no matter what obstacles stand in our way. We do it with a lot of humor to ease the pain sometimes associated with approaching life this way.
Tell us about the podcast the two of you created.
Surviving the Survivor was created during the pandemic. My media business stood at a standstill, and my mom had nothing going on. Karm is a cross between Dr. Ruth and Howard Stern’s mother—she’s very funny, tough as nails and overly opinionated. With over 27 years in the media, I knew she had the so-called “it” factor. So, I put her to work as my co-host. Coincidentally, we don’t know of any older active podcasters in America. STS began with interviews with notable people like Tiger King’s Carole Baskin and Harvard Astrophysicist Dr. Avi Loeb, who wrote the NYT bestseller Extraterrestrial.
But, after coming across a true crime story about a murdered Jewish FSU Law Professor, Dan Markel, we switched to true crime all the time. This genre has always fascinated me, as has my mom, a licensed social worker and therapist. We found a niche within the niche interviewing the #BestGuests in #TrueCrime, and as a result, we’ve quickly become one of the most popular podcasts in this arena.
You have a series of books that will be collectibles. Can you tell us about that? Karm is unquestionably the star of Surviving the Survivor. She has a cult of fans—people from around the globe turn to her for advice because of her own life experience as a survivor of WW2. One of her well-known sayings is: “We’re all just trying to survive in a rough world.” As a result, people are constantly asking for Karm’s advice and literal blessings. So, we’ve teamed up with Premiere Collectibles. At SignedSurvivorBook.com, you can get a custom inscription from Karm (and Joel) for a limited hardcover edition of the STS book.

SURFING NYC
CATCHING WAVES IN THE ROCKAWAYS
By Kylie Edmond
I’m an Aussie. I’m also a kook (A beginner surfer who doesn’t really know what they’re doing and is usually sighed at on sight). I grew up with the best beaches in the world at my doorstep. There’s a famous saying, “You can’t impress an Aussie with a beach.” While I found that true, I was pleasantly surprised with the Rockaways. Specifically, Beach 67th Street, where you’ll find a lineup of surfers and sometimes even dolphins and whales. It’s not as built up as other surf breaks in the area where you’ll find bars and food spots on the boardwalk, Sunday morning yoga, bands playing at night, and more.”
The simplicity of Beach 67th Street is what is so alluring. You can have breakfast or lunch just one block from the beach. Also, enjoy cocktails at the Rockaway Tiki Bar; for coffee, muffins and acai bowls, you’ll head to Locals Collective NYC (you can even store your board there); or for a delish pita bowl or Moroccan tea, you’ll visit Cuisine by Claudette
COMMUNITY IS FIRST
You’ll even find organizations doing wonderful things for the community. For example, the Laru Beya Collective’s mission is empowering the historically excluded youth of the Far Rockaways through surfing. The Surfrider Foundation’s mission is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network. In other words, it is an allembracing community trying to help save our beautiful beaches and a “beach way of life.”
Even the Ramones wrote a Beach Boy-esque song in ’77 aptly named “Rockaway Beach.” Apparently, bassist Dee Dee Ramone loved spending time at the beach. Hailed as a “bubble gum masterpiece,” it’s one of their stone-cold classics.
While getting my fix year-round (that’s right, winter surfing is an actual pastime, even in the harshest of conditions), I’ve met some amazing folk while we bob about, waiting for the perfect wave. Trailblazers and brave souls are amongst us, each with a unique story. What connects them is a love for the ocean and an absolute unstoppable need (for many) to travel on multiple subways for sometimes over an hour to get to their favorite break.
THE CHAVEZ BROTHERS
Osvaldo Chavez, who owns Surfboard Tribe NYC with his brother Oliver, has been a Rockaway Beach staple since 2019. Out of a van and tent on 67th, they offer boards and wetsuits for all conditions and skill levels, a warm greeting and a smooch from their dog Maui. They see a lot of tourists who don’t have gear with them and, of course, NYC locals who prefer not to lug their boards on the subway.
“Our opening coincided with a really good swell day and people who either broke their boards in half, or were in town visiting who needed gear, found us right by the beach, so we became very available and reliable. We were the first in town to have a vendor’s license surf truck in the Rockaways.” Osvaldo said. “Most people are definitely surprised that surfing happens in NYC, but especially the fact that there is gear we could use to surf in the cold winters and stay warm.”
GINA JURLANDO
Warm bodies are a must, but so are a warm heart and soul. When Gina Jurlando first arrived at the Rockaways, she was shocked that it was totally a “dude scene.” A couple of other females were out there (and they were amazing). The whole vibe felt intimidating. She didn’t see diversity on the waves and wanted to be able to connect with others no matter their background or skill level. And so Yeasty Boys was born with an aim to create and foster connections in and out of the water—no matter how much of a kook you may or may not be.
Gina also curates community events including beach clean-ups, surf therapy and etiquette sessions, surf film festivals and more. Oh, and she even sold all her belongings and lived on a boat for a time. According to Gina, “I realized that a lot of women, fem and non-binary people wanted to surf. They were scared to go out alone and didn’t want to get in peoples’ way. It started very informally. Now we have 320 people in our community.” Gina continued, “It is such a diverse group of people of all ages, incomes, jobs and backgrounds. You can text the group and say, ‘Hey, I’m going out at 67th; I have a blue board so you can find me. Does anyone want to join me?’ At least one person will reply ‘yes, see you there!”
The thing that Gina thinks most would be surprised about is, “New Yorkers get a bad rap for not being the kindest, but for being intense. New Yorkers, especially in the Rockaways, are nice and very welcoming. We just want everyone to have a good time and do it safely.
LESSONS LEARNED
BRIAN “BJ” JAMES
© lifeofrileynyc
Known around town as the Nautical Negro (also the name of his book you can find in the link below), Brian “BJ” James is one of the pioneers of the growing black surf scene in the Rockaways. According to BJ, he started in 1997 when there was just one other black man with a surfboard. What surprised him more was that the Rockaways had great waves. He didn’t come from a family of beachgoers, but somehow, he clicked with the ocean and knew instantly he was “home.” Surfing had a race barrier, but BJ was ready to smash it.
“When I first started surfing, sometimes I would get negative comments. Now they all know me, and they know I’m not going anywhere. Most people are good and want to surf and enjoy themselves. It’s a much different surf break now for the kids coming up and anyone who might be seen as different. Everyone is out there; women, older people, different cultures and colors,” BJ said.
When referring to “the kids” on the beach, BJ said, “I also wanted to help the youth who either didn’t have access or the means to enjoy the ocean and surfing. I’ve introduced a lot of youth to the ocean. I wanted them to feel confident out there, seeing people that looked like them on surfboards. Now, there are many more people of color surfing; it’s for everyone.”
While putting your toes in the ocean is a great start, so is getting lessons. There are ample surf schools that stretch across the Rockaways, big and small. There are many to choose from, but my favorite is NYC Surfing, the only veteran-owned surf school in the Rockaways. Jay Sigelak gives excellent surf instruction and often life quotes while on the board, such as, “The best surfer out there is the one having the most fun,” or “Stop trying—do it or don’t do it.” He also extends discounts to active duty, military veterans and first responders.
“When people think of NYC they think of the city. They don’t think about the ocean. But when you catch the surf bug it’s for life. It has a profound effect on people. I always think about what the character Bodhi in Point Break said: “It’s that place where you lose yourself and find yourself.” I’ve given lessons to people who lived in Manhattan and then they had to move out to the Rockaways to be closer to the surf.” Jay explained.
“People used to come to the Rockaways as their summer or weekend home, well before the Hamptons. This was the gem of NYC. I think that’s been forgotten. But there’s great surf and beaches here especially for learning how to surf.” Jay continued. “As we get older, we are way more in our heads; it’s harder just to let go. We get set in our ways. When giving instructions, I’m trying to get people to loosen up and let go. I’ll say to them—breathe, relax, don’t look down. I believe in you—but you don’t believe in you. Don’t quit on yourself.”
If you have long thought about starting a new hobby (read: addiction!) or getting back into it, now is the time and Beach 67th at the Rockaways is the place. The subway ride isn’t bad; you don’t have to bring your own gear, and you’re welcomed by friendly faces that soon become friends. Maybe I’ll see you out there. I’m the one spending more time underwater than riding on it, but I’m definitely the one having the most fun.

TIME OUT WITH…
SARAH FRASER: FROM RADIO TO PODCAST STARDOM
By Jenna Guarneri
Sarah Fraser is a multifaceted force in the entertainment industry, renowned as a TV Host, Podcaster, Producer, and Comedian. She has carved out a niche with The Sarah Fraser Show, a top-rated and boldly unapologetic pop-curious podcast with its candid blend of pop culture insights, exclusive interviews, and personal anecdotes. Sarah fearlessly shares her unfiltered opinions on the hottest pop-culture headlines and candid stories about her life on this show.
Her influence extends beyond the airwaves; Sarah has graced screens as an entertainment contributor on Fox5 DC and brought her vibrant personality to Lifetime’s Married At First Sight series. Her podcast’s reach has garnered attention from major media outlets like the Daily Mail and The Wall Street Journal, solidifying her as a prominent voice in the entertainment landscape.
New York Lifestyles recently had the opportunity to sit down with Sarah to discuss her career journey and leveraging social media for brand building. Here’s what she shared.
What was your vision of what you would eventually become as a child?
I have wanted to be a talk show host since I was eight years old. I would make my cousin play ‘talk show’ with our dolls. We’d watch Oprah and then reenact the show. Later, I did the morning announcements for my high school; it was the perfect training ground for my current work. I am fortunate to have always known what I wanted to do.
Share with us what type of interviews you find most enjoyable and highlight a guest who has left an impression on you. Interviews with people who have overcome challenges or accomplished something significant. Drake Bell is a recent interview that comes to mind. I exclusively interviewed him after the Quiet On Set documentary dropped. He was so vulnerable; it gave me goosebumps. By choosing me to interview him first, he catapulted my career and the type of guests I’m getting now on my show. I am genuinely grateful for Drake.
How have you leveraged these social platforms to communicate your brand?
With my social media platforms, the themes and things I am constantly trying to emphasize are: I want people to think, be inspired, be outraged, laugh, and feel. That’s what I’m going for on my pages. I’ve entirely leveraged social media to build my brand—most of my downloads to my podcast come from a social media clip I put up. Advertisers find me lots of times for my social media. I have a love/hate relationship with it, but it’s wholly built my brand, and I’m grateful for it.
What advice would you give someone just starting in your industry?
Just get started, and don’t spend a lot of money! That’s my rule when it comes to podcasting. I see so many amazing podcasters get burnt out or discouraged because they pay producers, editors, etc., and don’t know how to make money. Having a podcast is fantastic for your brand. Work smarter, not harder. Jump on some trends or don’t, but stay consistent, experiment, see what pops up, and lean into it.
How do you select the right partnerships that align with your audience’s interests while maintaining the authenticity of your show?
I know my audience! My audience is 90 percent women between the ages of 25 and 45. I’ve had products on my show that I thought people would love; they were just too expensive or a little more geared toward men. I’ve slowly learned over time—but I also take risks. I had a very high-end matchmaking company collaborate with me, which resulted in signups for them, and I was blown away.
How do you define success for yourself? Has that definition evolved?
Yes, my idea of success has changed. My idea of success a decade ago was making a ton of money and being famous. I worked for Hot 99.5, The Kane Show, and iHeart Radio, and I was on a path to do that, but it came with many personal sacrifices that I grew to resent. Now, it’s about freedom, being a great mom and wife, and having the ability to decide what content I want to go on the air. It’s also about what feels good mentally and spiritually. I’m living a dream I never thought was possible, and I can’t tell you how good it feels.

THE FINAL WORD
GLUTTONOUS JAWS & THE IMPOSSIBLE
By Sean-Patrick M. Hillman
It was 1986. That August 22nd, Rob Reiner released Stand By Me. Few knew who River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell and Wil Wheaton were. Even fewer knew what a phenomena this cast and movie would become. But there is one scene in particular I wanted to tackle for this month’s column; “The Great Tri-County Bake Off & Pie Eat.” Yes, that is the scene that David “Lardass” Hogan (played by Andy Lindberg) got his revenge on the town he grew up in for calling him fat. That was the first time I had ever seen an eating contest.
Years later, just hearing the phrase “competitive eating” conjured up the very image of Lardass vomiting all over four-time pie eating contest winner Bill Travis, resulting in the “Barf-O-Rama” that everyone laughs at during the film. The very idea of it made me nauseous. That is until one fateful Fourth of July in 2004 that changed everything.
That was the year competitive eating legend Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi broke every record on the books by consuming 53.5 hot dogs at the legendary Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Competition. Watching this tiny man consume that many hot dogs astounded me. How could all of that meat and bread fit inside such a tiny human? I was instantly hooked on the gluttony of it all.
Now, on every Fourth of July, I fire up the barbecue and throw a ton of Nathan’s hot dogs on the grill, along with the buns. My wife, any friends we have over, and I then sit in front of the idiot box watching as grown men and women shovel dozens of dogs down their throat in a display that can only be called hilariously disgusting.
When fan-favorite Joey “Jaws” Chestnut defeated the Tsunami and broke his record in 2007 by consuming 66 of Nathan’s tube steaks, the intersection of Surf and Stillwell on Coney Island lit up like the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks. Chestnut became an overnight sensation with millions of adoring fans showing their love and support for Jaws.
When Chestnut lost the Mustard Belt title to Matt Stonie in 2015, millions across the globe cried foul. Jaws reclaimed the belt the following year, swearing his fans were the reason for his triumphant return.
So it came as quite a shock when Major League Eating (who is responsible for the contest with Nathan’s) announced a couple of weeks ago that Joey Chestnut has been banned from this year’s Pepto Bismol necessitating contest, especially when we found out why. And, just to be clear, this mess is Chestnut’s fault. Not Nathan’s. Not Major League Eating.
After almost 20 years of competing in the Nathan’s competition, Chestnut signed a contract with Impossible Foods to represent their new veggie hot dog line despite knowing that Nathan’s has a firm non-compete clause every competitor must sign to participate in the contest. This begs the question, “why did Joey Chestnut do this?” The answer? As always, it’s about the money.
Allegedly, Joey Chestnut signed with Impossible Foods for only a slightly higher amount of money than the $1.2 million four-year contract Nathan’s offered. Bear in mind, that $1.2M was strictly for Chestnut to appear and do media, with any competition winnings on top of that base pay.
It is sad that Chestnut knew exactly what he was doing when he signed with Impossible. Yet the apologists (you know…the folks who believe everything they read on FakeBook and X… those wouldn’t understand the truth if you slapped them across the face with it) keep saying that Nathan’s is the bad guy here. Said apologists have repeatedly called on Nathan’s, Major League Eating and ESPN to be “cancelled” because of Chestnut being banned.
Here is the reality…Chestnut took a payday to satisfy his own personal desires at the sake of the millions who loved and adored him through 16 Mustard Belt titles. The fans made his career. Major League Eating is simply enforcing the rules that Chestnut has agreed to for almost 20 years of competing on Coney Island. Sorry to those who disagree, but it is fact.
Major League Eating and Nathan’s bent over backwards to accommodate requests by Chestnut’s management, but at the end of the day, they just weren’t willing to take a punch to the gut. It is important to note that Nathan’s did give Chestnut the opportunity to work through things, even allowing him to compete in a nonbranded hot dog eating competition around Labor Day, but there just seemed to be no pleasing the famous glutton. Chestnut claimed to be surprised when the story broke about the ban.
For Nathan’s to give Impossible the opportunity to capitalize on the legendary competition would have cost the company millions in revenue. Granted it would have been a short-term revenue bump to Impossible, given how poorly their sales are trending and the negative sentiment being shared by many of their now former customers.
The Final Word: Joey “Jaws” Chestnut left his fans in the lurch for a payday.
